Developing plastic/fluorine/silicon-free and degradable water/oil-resistant coatings for paper-based packaging materials to replace disposable plastic products is a very effective way to solve the problem of 'white pollution' or microplastics pollution. A novel water/oil-resistant coating was developed by alkyl ketene dimer (AKD)-based Pickering emulsion and chitosan in this work. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were used as a stabilizing solid for AKD emulsion, with the addition of chitosan as an oil-resistance agent. The coating provides excellent hydrophobicity, water/oil resistance as well as good barrier properties. The water contact angle was as high as 130° and the minimum Cobb60 value was 5.7 g/m 2 , which was attributed to the hydrophobicity of AKD. In addition, the kit rating reached maximum 12/12 at coating weight of 8.26 g/m 2 and the water vapor transmittance rate (WVTR) was reduced to 153.4 g/(m 2 ⋅day) at the coating weight of 10.50 g/m 2 . The tensile strength of the paper was increased from 28.1 to 43.6 MPa after coating. The aging of paper seriously threatens the service life of cultural heritage documents. Bacterial cellulose (BC), which has a good fiber aspect ratio and is rich in hydroxyl groups, is suitable for strengthening aged paper. However, a single BC added was not ideal for paper restoration, since only strengthening was not able to resist the persistent acidification of ancient book. In this work, BC was functionalized by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to develop the interface bonding with aged paper. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and elemental analysis identified the successful amino-silanization of BC. The modification parameters were optimized as the concentration of APTES of 5 wt%, the reaction time of 4 h, and the reaction temperature of 80 °C based on a considerable improvement in the strength properties without obvious appearance impact on reinforced papers. Moreover, the pH value of the repaired paper was achieved at 8.03, ensuring the stability of the anti-aging effect. The monitoring of foodborne bacterial contamination requires simple and convenient biosensors. This work describes a novel paper-based colorimetric biosensor for the rapid and sensitive bacteria detection. The biosensor was constructed via the encapsulation of D-alanyl-D-alanine capped gold nanoparticles (DADA-AuNPs) in a modified paper that was fabricated by the freeze-drying of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers/cationic guar gum composite hydrogel-modified filter paper. The results indicated that the size of DADA-AuNPs largely determined the color of their aqueous system and they exhibited light red to dark red as their size increased from around 6 to 36 nm. All these different sized DADA-AuNPs turned into colorless when encountered with either S. aureus or E. coli. In particular, the smaller the DADA-AuNPs size, the faster the discoloration. The encapsulation of DADA-AuNPs into modified paper negligibly changed their responsiveness towards bacteria. In comparison to the original filter paper and oven-dried hydrogel-modified filter paper, the freeze-dried hydrogel-modified paper was demonstrated to be a better substrate for the encapsulation of DADA-AuNPs since they could be loaded with a larger amount of DADA-AuNPs in a faster way and showed a better perceivable color. Electromagnetic hydrogels have attracted significant attention due to their vast potential in soft robotics, biomedical engineering, and energy harvesting. To facilitate future commercialization via large-scale industrial processes, we present a facile concept that utilizes the specialized knowledge of papermaking to fabricate hydrogels with multifunctional electromagnetic properties. The principles of papermaking wet end chemistry, which involves the handling of interactions among cellulosic fibers, fines, polymeric additives, and other components in aqueous systems, serves as a key foundation for this concept. Notably, based on these principles, the versatile use of chemical additives in combination with cellulosic materials enables the tailored design of various products. Our methodology exploits the unique hierarchically pitted and hollow tube-like structures of papermaking grade cellulosic fibers with discernible pits, enabling the incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles through lumen loading. By combining microscale softwood-derived cellulosic fibers with additives, we achieve dynamic covalent interactions that transform the cellulosic fiber slurry into an impressive hydrogel. The cellulosic fibers act as a skeleton, providing structural support within the hydrogel framework and facilitating the dispersion of nanoparticles. In accordance with our concept, the typical hydrogel exhibits combined attributes, including electrical conductivity, self-healing properties, pH responsiveness, and dynamic rheologic behavior. Our approach not only yields hydrogels with interesting properties but also aligns with the forefront of advanced cellulosic material applications. These materials hold the promise in remote strain sensing devices, electromagnetic navigation systems, contactless toys, and flexible electronic devices. The concept and findings of the current work may shed light on materials innovation based on traditional pulp and paper processes. In recent years, researchers have put much attention on the improvements and upgrades of novel wet strength agent in the papermaking fields, especially in the usage of household paper. Herein, PEI M -KH560 by polyethyleneimine (PEI) and γ-glycidyl ether propyl trimethoxysilane (KH560) was synthesized with five molecular weights (Mw) of PEI at 600, 1800, 10,000, 70,000 and 750,000. Results showed that the molecular weight greatly influenced the physicochemical properties of PEI-KH560, such as the size and thermal stability. The intrinsic cationic charge of PEI-KH560 provided the bonding sites with the paper fibers, forming strengthened fiber-fiber joints. It was shown that the dry, wet strength and hydrophobicity of cellulosic paper sheets were obviously improved. When the m (PEI):m(KH560) is 1:2, the strength of papers after sizing by Mw of PEI at 600 and 1800 is the most obvious, with the dry strength increased by 227.9 % and 187.5 %, and the wet strength increased by 183.8 % and 207.8 %, respectively. The maximum hydrophobicity was found at the PEI 1800 -KH560 with the contact angle value of 130.6°. Paper-based test film material is widely used in a variety of test instruments for different applications. The enzyme activity test paper sheet is one of the most popularly used test papers. Here we present a novel fabrication of paper-based enzyme activity test paper without cationic resin added in. The chemical pulping fibers were first beaten to different degrees (from 14.6 to 41.5°SR) with a PFI beater. After that, the fibers were modified with a cationic agent (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) under the system of alkali and water solution. Finally, the test papers were made with the modified fiber by a regular paper former in lab. The results showed that beating is beneficial for the improvement of the cationization reaction which is indicated by the Zeta potential, FTIR and EDS. The main mechanisms involved are the destruction of crystalline zone, increase of free hydroxyl group and defibrillation. This hypothesis was supported by the SEM, XRD and fiber analyzer. This study focuses on enhancing the strength and water stability of paper straws through a novel approach involving a binary emulsion of lignin-based polyurethane and chitosan. Kraft lignin serves as the raw material for synthesizing a blocked waterborne polyurethane, subsequently combined with carboxylated chitosan to form a stable binary emulsion. The resulting emulsion, exhibiting remarkable stability over at least 6 months, is applied to the base paper. Following emulsion application, the paper undergoes torrefaction at 155 °C. This process deblocks isocyanate groups, enabling their reaction with hydroxyl groups on chitosan and fibers, ultimately forming ester bonds. This reaction significantly improves the mechanical strength and hydrophobicity of paper straws. The composite paper straws demonstrate exceptional mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 47.21 MPa, Young's modulus of 4.33 GPa, and flexural strength of 32.38 MPa. Notably, its water stability is greatly enhanced, with a wet tensile strength of 40.66 MPa, surpassing commercial paper straws by 8 folds. Furthermore, the composite straw achieves complete biodegradability within 120 days, outperforming conventional paper straws in terms of environmental impact. Counterfeiting has caused great concern all over the world. What's more, the fluorescent materials play an important role in technological research and development for high-security. In this work, lead-metal-organic framework (Pb-MOF) and perovskite (MAPbBr 3 ) were used in papers to achieving fluorescence counterfeiting. Pb-MOF, as the template or precursor of MAPbBr 3 , were in-situ generated on the surface of cellulose fibers (CFs) to preparing into hand sheets (Pb-MOF@CFs). Through the analysis of experimental results, it was found that ligands, reaction systems, addition sequences of drugs, time, etc. would affect the deposition of Pb-MOF on the surface of CFs. Using CH 3 NH 3 Br (MABr) as the anti-counterfeiting ink to write on Pb-MOF@CFs, the orange writing leaped across the paper, which caused by Pb in Pb-MOF chemically reacting with MABr forming MAPbBr 3 . The orange writing displayed green fluorescence under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp excitation. The orange writing with green fluorescence could be extinguished and reconstructed, which had promise for reuse. In addition, fluorescent security papers (MAPbBr 3 @Pb-MOFs@CFs) were prepared by immersing Pb-MOF@CFs in MABr solution. The fluorescence of MAPbBr 3 @Pb-MOFs@CFs opened when the surface of it was scraped under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp. This unique fluorescence property was very important in improving the security of products. The abnormal uric acid (UA) level in urine can serve as warning signals of many diseases, such as gout and metabolic cardiovascular diseases. The current methods for detecting UA face limitations of instrument dependence and the requirement for non-invasiveness, making it challenging to fulfill the need for home-based application. In this study, we designed an aptasensor that combined UA-specific transcriptional regulation and a fluorescent RNA aptamer for convenient urinary UA testing. The concentration of UA can be translated into the intensity of fluorescent signals. The aptasensor showed higher sensitivity and more robust anti-interference performance. UA levels in the urine of different volunteers could be accurately tested using this method. In addition, a paper-based aptasensor for UA self-testing was manufactured, in which the urinary UA levels could be determined using a smartphone-based colorimetric approach. Colored paper is an important industrial paper grade that has applications in various industrial sectors. The increase in coloring efficiency is a key in decreasing the use of dyes, thus can be considered as a "green" process concept; the coloring efficiency depends on the dye retention and dispersion. This work explores the use of nanocellulose, specifically, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF), on the coloring efficiency of the preparation of colored paper. Two dyes (i.e. direct blue GL and reactive red 195 (RR195)) were used. Thanks to the large specific surface area and abundant active sites of TOCNF, its use largely improves the direct blue GL retention during the process. The coloring difference (∆E* ab) reached 5.334 with the addition of 13.6 wt% TOCNF and 1.8 wt% direct blue GL in the pulp furnish. The functional group in the dye is a vital factor in determining the dye retention when one chooses TOCNF to enhance the coloring efficiency in the production of colored paper. Furthermore, TOCNF significantly improved the strength properties of both direct blue GL and RR 195 dyed papers. This work demonstrates the potential of nanocellulose in the production of colored paper in improving the coloring efficiency, thus decreasing the environmental impact of the manufacturing process. Frequent oceanic oil spill incidents and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters have caused serious threats to environments, food chains and human beings. Lignin wastes with many reactive groups exist as the byproducts from bioethanol and pulping processing industries, and they are either discarded as wastes or directly consumed as a fuel. To make full use of lignin wastes and simultaneously deal with oily wastewaters, porous lignin-based composites have been rationally designed and prepared. In this review, recent advances in the preparation of porous lignin-based composites are summarized in terms of aerogels, sponges, foams, papers, and membranes, respectively. Then, the mechanisms and the application of porous lignin-based adsorbents and filtration materials for oil/water separation are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of porous lignin-based composites are proposed in the field of oil/water separation. The utilization of abundant lignin wastes can replace fossil resources, and meanwhile porous lignin-based composites can be used to efficiently treat with oily wastewaters. The above utilization strategy opens an avenue to the rational design and preparation of lignin wastes with high-added value, and gives a possible solution to use lignin wastes in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. A lignin-based PU coating was prepared for paper-based green packaging. Two representative diisocyanate were used to prepare the coatings. Due to the rigid aromatic, the physical properties of the TDI system reached the maximum below the lignin content of 40%. The HDI that contains flexible aliphatic chains alleviated the brittleness of coating, and it showed physical advantages when the lignin content was more than 50%. Owing to the high lignin content, the coating presented enhanced thermal stability. After coated with the lignin-based PU coatings, the dry tensile strength of coated paper was improved by 126%. Amazingly, the wet strength was increased from 0.31 to 12.6 MPa with an improvement nearly 40 times. Based on the coordination of lignin, Ag+ was introduced into the PU matrix, which imparted the coating with excellent antibacterial ability. The colony forming units of E. coli and S. aureus were both less than 1. However, no inhibition halo was observed, which indicated that the Ag was firmly anchored on the coating and the antibacterial ability is only available when the bacterial contact the coating surface. The lignin-based PU coating with favorable sustainability and properties shows great potential in paper-based green packaging fields. The prepared PU coating with high lignin content and firmly anchored Ag+ exhibits outstanding physical properties, thermal stability, and antibacterial property, which makes it an ideal candidate to be used in paper-based green packaging. Sustainable strategies to improve the water resistance of cellulose paper are actively sought. In this work, polymeric microspheres (PMs), prepared through emulsion polymerization of cellulose nanofibers stabilized rubber seed oil-derived monomer, were investigated as coatings on corrugated medium paper (CMP). After infiltrating porous paper with PMs, the water-resistant corrugated papers (WRCP n ) with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained. When 30 wt% PMs were introduced, WRCP 30 turned out to be highly compacted with an increased water contact angle of 106.3° and a low water vapor transmission rate of 81 g/(m 2 d) at 23 °C. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of WRCP 30 increased to 22.2 MPa, a 4-fold increase from CMP. When tested in a well-hydrated state, 71% of its mechanical strength in the dry state was maintained. Even with a low content of 10 wt% PMs, WRCP 10 also exhibited stable tensile strength and water wettability during the cyclic soaking-drying process. The demand for paper-based packaging materials as an alternative to incumbent disposable petroleum-derived polymers for food packaging applications is ever-growing. However, typical paper-based formats are not suitable for use in unconventional applications due to inherent limitations (e.g., excessive hydrophilicity, lack antimicrobial ability), and accordingly, enabling new capabilities is necessity. Herein, a simple and environmentally friendly strategy was proposed to introduce antimicrobial and hydrophobic functions to cellulose paper through successive chemical grafting of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and cinnamaldehyde (CA). The results revealed that cellulose paper not only showed long-term antibacterial effect on different bacteria, but also inhibited a wide range of fungi. Encouragingly, the modified paper, which is fluorine-free, displays a high contact angle of 119.7°. Thus, even in the wet state, the modified paper can still maintain good mechanical strength. Meanwhile, the multifunctional composite papers have excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Compared with ordinary cellulose paper, multifunctional composite paper can effectively prolong the shelf life of strawberries. Limnocharis flava is a noxious aquatic weed that poses a threat to paddy cultivation. The high cellulose and low lignin contents in this plant make it a potential raw material for papermaking. Against this backdrop, this study was taken up to develop Limnocharis flava (LF) based sheets containing natural fibres from Banana (B), Pineapple (P), and Rice Straw (RS) as reinforcing agents. The influence of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a binder on the LF-based sheets was also studied. To enhance the mechanical and moisture resistance properties, a chitosan coating was provided to the sheets. Analytical tests for mechanical properties, water barrier properties, functional groups, structure and microstructure, thermal properties and biodegradability were performed. Among the samples, LF + B showed the highest tensile strength (34.86 Mpa) and bursting strength (13.055 kg/cm2), while LF + R had higher puncture and tearing strengths. Chitosan coating was found to enhance the sheets and improve the water barrier properties mechanically. The contact angle of LF + B increased from 91.6° to 110.65°, while the water vapour transmission rate of LF reduced from 532.18 to 404.47 on providing chitosan coating. The significant interactions of reinforcing agents were confirmed by the results of FTIR and that of the coating by the SEM micrographs. The LF-based sheets were also found to have decent thermal stability. The high value of the crystallinity index in LF + R samples supported their remarkable mechanical properties. In this work, we prepared novel cellulosic paper by incorporating tannin into the kraft pulp for potential application in active food packaging. The kraft pulp fibers were firstly periodate oxidized to obtain the dialdehyde cellulosic fibers, and then reacted with varied dosages of tannin to incorporate them into the fibers by covalent bondings between aldehyde groups on cellulose and active hydrogen on tannin. Handsheets were prepared using the tannin incorporated fibers through papermaking process and the properties were characterized. The percentage of tannin in the paper increased with the increase of the tannin dosage. FT-IR spectra confirmed the successful incorporation of tannin into the cellulosic fibers. It was found that paper after incorporation of tannin turned to be surface hydrophobic with contact angles higher than 90°, which may probably due to the covalent bonds between tannin and cellulose. The handsheets show high antioxidative and UV-shielding properties, which both increased with the increase of the tannin percentage in the paper. Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) decreased after the incorporation of tannin, and this could facilitate its application in food packaging. The breaking length of tannin incorporated paper decreased insignificantly, less than 10% with the tannin percentage as high as 45%. Over the centuries, various types of paper have been produced, each characterized by a different ratio of natural macromolecules, mainly lignin and cellulose. Handmade paper has a higher content of cellulose with respect to the early machine-made paper, where lignin is the other important component. Microorganisms are able to colonize and deteriorate both types. They can release on their surfaces pigments and colorants which produced anesthetic stains. To better understand the microbiota colonizing these stains, 17 samples were analyzed, from both handmade and machine-made paper surfaces, as well as library and archive environments. Combination of microbiological and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) approaches were applied. The culture-dependent methodology comprised: isolation, DNA identification, hydrolytic and paper staining assays. The HTS was performed by MinION platform and for the mycobiome a more suitable bioinformatics analysis pipeline, MetONTIIME based on QIIME2 framework, was applied. The paper model staining assay permitted the direct recognition of colorizing isolates which in combination with sequencing data evidenced a complex microbial community able to stain the two types of paper. Staining abilities were confirmed by frequently isolated and detected fungi as well as newly discovered ones Roussoella euonymi and Achaetomium. Water-associated or water-related infectious disease outbreaks are caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, which can be transmitted through contaminated water sources, poor sanitation practices, or insect vectors. Low- and middle-income countries bear the major burden of these infections due to inadequate hygiene and subpar laboratory facilities, making it challenging to monitor and detect infections in a timely manner. However, even developed countries are not immune to these diseases, as inadequate wastewater management and contaminated drinking water supplies can also contribute to disease outbreaks. Nucleic acid amplification tests have proven to be effective for early disease intervention and surveillance of both new and existing diseases. In recent years, paper-based diagnostic devices have made significant progress and become an essential tool in detecting and managing water-associated infectious diseases. This paper presents a binary reinforcement system of polyamide polyamine epichlorohydrin with nanocellulose (PAE-NC) for effectively modification of the reclaimed fibres for paper production, and based on the improvement of physical and mechanical properties of cellulosic fibres together with PAE-NC self-crosslinking networks, the strengthening mechanisms of recycled papers are examined. The PAE-NC binary system was applied directly to old corrugated container (OCC) and softwood bleached kraft pulp (SWBKP), and handsheets are prepared with varying amounts of PAE/NC/PAE-NC, namely 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt% (dry pulp). The results showed that the studied additives improved the performance of recycled fibres, whether SWBKP or OCC pulp, and handsheets in solely or combined mechanisms except for the air permeability of the handsheets. The treatment of PAE-NC combination was significantly more effective than those of PAE or NC alone for both OCC and SWBKP, although the combined PAE-NC treatment results in better performance enhancement for OCC than SWBKP handsheets, and the NC alone is more effective than PAE for SWBKP recycled paper and conversely for OCC recycled paper. Abstract: The central composite design (CCD) was applied to optimize the water extraction of the polysaccharide from Adenophorae Radix in the paper. The three variables of extraction temperature (X 1), extraction time (X 2) and ratio of water to raw material (X 3) were investigated by single factor analysis first. Since the presence of active polysaccharides and the imperfect of its extraction, the purpose of the paper was to evaluate the effects of selected variables on the yield of polysaccharide, which was expected to obtain the maximum yield. By variance and regression analysis, the quadratic regression equation was established as a predicted model. The R 2 of 0.9825 indicated that the equation was well-fitted. The optimal conditions were 72.5°C, 133min, 1:35 (g/mL) and the predicted maximum yield of the polysaccharide was 5.78%. The predicted value was verified in triplicates under the optimum conditions, which was 5.68% and well matched with the predictive yield. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper describes the fabrication of paper-based microfluidic devices using a novel, inexpensive ink composed of bovine serum albumin (BSA), utilizing BSA's thermal denaturation and aggregation to create a hydrophobic barrier on Whatman® Grade 4 filter paper. A 20% aqueous solution of BSA was inked onto the paper using a pen plotter at moderate speed (5 cm/s) with desired shape and size followed by heating at 80 °C to denature the BSA leading to hydrophobic barriers formation, whereas below 80 °C the barrier layer is prone to collapse. The minimum line gap and line width of ~1 mm and ~1.3 mm were achieved. Finally, a proof-of-concept glucose sensing was shown while addressing the issue of the coffee ring effect using the biopolymer NanoCheck-ATH® from ChitoLytic Inc. The glucose concentration limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.2 mg/mL was estimated. Bio-based additives received significant attention in pulp and paper properties improvement. For this, the most cited biochemical Cellulose Nano Fibrils (CNFs) and Cationic Starch (CS) were experimentally compared with the most declared synthetic chemical, Cationic Polyacrylamide (CPAM). SEM images showed better paper surface filling by the utilization of the chemicals. The three studied polymers, in solely or combination mechanism, improved mainly bagasse pulp and paper properties compared to the blank sample, except for pulp drainage, which decreased by CNFs to lower volumes presumably due to its intrinsic characteristics. Cationic polymers (CP) compared to CP/CNFs approaches increased pulp retention and drainage but decreased paper density and strengths. The best pulp retention and drainage achieved by CS followed by CPAM, while paper air persistency, density, and strength properties evaluated highest by CP/CNFs followed by CNFs. As a crucial biomarker for some diseases, the determination of cholesterol in human serum is of great significance for the diagnosis and prevention of these diseases. Hence, a portable cholesterol detection method is necessary for clinical and domestic applications. Here, a portable paper sensor was designed for cholesterol detection by modifying screen-printed electrode (SPE) with nanoporous gold (NPG). To achieve the reliable cholesterol detection, a synergistic strategy was proposed based on the oxidation of cholesterol by cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) and the reduction of oxidation product (H 2 O 2 ) by NPG. Compared to existing electrochemical sensors, the resulting paper sensor exhibited a wider linear response in a range from 50 μM to 6 mM as well as a higher sensitivity of 32.68 μA mM -1  cm -2 with a lower detection limit of 8.36 μM. Moreover, the portable paper sensor presented strong anti-interference capability and stability in the detection of cholesterol in human serum, and the data detected by the portable paper sensor were consistent with that obtained by an automatic biochemical analyzer. This research aims to develop white bread shelf-life extension sachet with controlled release of antimicrobial agent prepared from multicomponent bio-based materials. The structure of antimicrobial sachet consists of two major parts i.e., controlled release part and active part. The first part produced from paper coated with ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH). The second one was an active part which produced from biodegradable poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and geraniol essential oil blend. Inhibition clear zone test results showed that a suitable geraniol concentration, encapsulated in PBS, was 10 wt%. Based on the water vapor transmission test, coating paper with EVOH for three times (around 450 μm) was an optimal condition for the use as a controlled release part. Release test indicated that geraniol migration concentration increased with increasing the relative humidity (RH) in the package which correlated to the moisture liberated from bread slice. Shelf-life extension study informed that the spoilage of bread stored with antimicrobial sachet was delayed by more than three weeks. In summary, this antimicrobial sachet could be used in food shelf-life extension purpose which easily placed in any food container. In this study, we developed an in-package colorimetric paper to monitor the ripeness of kiwifruit by detecting the release of aldehydes. Strongly hydrophobic composite films were prepared using chitosan as the matrix and beeswax as an additive. A piece of cellulose paper containing methyl red and bromocresol violet as color indicators was heat-sealed between two hydrophobic films to protect the indicators from the effects of fruit respiration and transpiration. The nucleophilic addition reaction between aldehydes and OH - (Cannizzaro reaction) changes the pH in the paper and triggers a color change in the indicators. As the kiwifruit ripens, the colorimetric paper changes from bluish-purple to dark red and then gradually to red. A mobile phone application was further used to measure the RGB values and link them to kiwifruit ripeness. Packaging is as important as the product itself because it is a crucial marketing and communication tool for business. Oxidized nanocellulose (ONC), extracted from agriculture residues of bagasse raw material using ecofriendly ammonium persulfate hydrolysis method, is used as support/reducing agent for the generation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via photochemical procedure and reinforcing element in paper functionalization. The natural polymer, sodium alginate (SA) is exploited to enhance the binding of the ONC-AgNPs over cellulose fibers. The SA/ONC-AgNPs bio-nanocomposite is incorporated on paper matrix, which represents a more suitable choice respect to other substrates for its renewable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and cost-effective properties. Hydrophobization of cellulosic materials and particularly paper products is a commonly used procedure to render papers more resistant to water and moisture. Here, we explore the hydrophobization of unsized paper sheets via the gas phase. We employed three different compounds, namely palmitoyl chloride (PCl), trifluoroacetic anhydride/acetic anhydride (TFAA/Ac 2 O)) and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) which were vaporized and allowed to react with the paper sheets via the gas phase. All routes yielded hydrophobic papers with static water contact angles far above 90° and indicated the formation of covalent bonds. The PCl and TFAA approach negatively impacted the mechanical and optical properties of the paper leading to a decrease in tensile strength and yellowing of the sheets. The HMDS modified papers did not exhibit any differences regarding relevant paper technological parameters (mechanical properties, optical properties, porosity) compared to the non-modified sheets. XPS studies revealed that the HMDS modified samples have a rather low silicon content, pointing at the formation of submonolayers of trimethylsilyl groups on the fiber surfaces in the paper network. This was further investigated by penetration dynamic analysis using ultrasonication, which revealed that the whole fiber network has been homogeneously modified with the silyl groups and not only the very outer surface as for the PCl and the TFAA modified papers. We characterised fibres and papers of microfibrillated silk from Bombyx mori produced by mechanical and enzymatic process. Milling increased the specific surface area of fibres from 1.5 to 8.5 m 2 /g and that enzymatic pre-treatment increased it further to 16.5 m 2 /g. These fibrils produced a uniform, significantly strong (tenacity 55 Nm/g) and stiff (Young's modulus > 2 GPa) papers. Enzymatic pre-treatment did not reduce molecular weight and tensile strength of papers but significantly improved fibrillation. Silk remained highly crystalline throughout the fibrillation process. Protease biodegradation was more rapid after fibrillation. Biodegradation was impacted by structural change due to enzymatic pre-treatment during the fibrillation. Biodegraded silk had much higher thermal degradation temperature. Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), a promising bio-based nanomaterial, has received much attention in the field of coating preparation due to its unique properties. Herein, NFC was prepared from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) via high-pressure homogenization process and deliberately employed as coating agent to enhance the properties of paper coatings and coated paper. The results demonstrated that the obtained paper coatings exhibited strong NFC concentration dependence on rheological behavior and displayed decreased water retention value with the increased NFC addition. Meanwhile, NFC addition was found to lead to the reduced Cobb value, improved air resistance, and enhanced tensile strength of coated paper. Under an optimized NFC addition of 0.30-0.40%, the properties of coated paper generally reached the optimum state. Moreover, SEM observation further confirmed that NFC addition imparted a relatively uniform surface structure to coated paper. The Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inborn defect of phenylalanine (Phe) metabolism, in which Phe accumulated in the blood causing alterations at the central nervous system. Therefore, the detection of PKU is very important for the early diagnosis of PKU patients. However, existing tests for PKU are time-consuming and require high-resource laboratories. In this study, a novel paper-based biosensor based on phenylalnine ammonia lyase (PAL) hybrid nanoflowers was constructed that provides a semi-quantitative output of the concentration of Phe from urine samples. PAL@Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 hybrid nanoflowers (PAL@NF) were first prepared using PAL and Ca 2+ . Synthesis conditions of the PAL@NF on the formation of the PAL@NF were optimized. The PAL@NF exhibited 90% activity recovery under optimal condition. Compared with free PAL, the PAL@NF displayed good storage stability and increased tolerance to proteolysis. After five consecutive operating cycles, the PAL@NF still retained 73% of its initial activity, indicating excellent reusability. Furthermore, the paper-based biosensor was able to detect Phe concentration in urine samples, and exhibited good linearity to the Phe concentrations in the range from 60 to 2400 μM and the response time was only about 10 min. In the present work, a facile and green synthesis approach for the production of monodispersed, small-sized (2.9 ± 0.7 nm) and stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) was reported. SSPS was used as the reducing and stabilizing agent. The obtained SSPS-stabilized AgNPs (SA) were characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The antimicrobial activity of the SA colloidal dispersion (SACD) was evaluated based on the growth kinetics of bacteria E. coli and S. aureus. Afterwards, the colloidal dispersion was applied as a coating material to Kraft paper. The SACD-coated Kraft paper exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against above bacteria strains and P. aeruginosa. The effects of SACD coating on surface wettability, barrier property and microstructure of the Kraft paper were also studied. Long term stability of antibodies at room temperature is a major challenge in the commercialization of point-of-care devices for diagnostics. Since chitosan has been proven to be an excellent biofunctionalization material, the effects of four different biofunctionalization processes were studied to improve the room temperature stability of antibodies immobilized on chitosan modified paper-based microfluidic devices using blood typing antibodies as candidates. The devices used in this work have a flower-shaped design with 4 test zones at each corner. In three zones Anti-A, Anti-B, and Anti-D (Anti-Rh) antibodies are immobilized and the fouth zone represents the control (no antibodies) after biofunctionalization. The biofunctionalization of the paper devices was done with chitosan and chitosan cross-linked with sodium triphosphate pentabasic, glutaraldehyde, and sodium hydroxide. These devices were used for blood typing assays using real blood samples. A similar assay was also performed on unmodified (non-biofunctionalized) paper devices for comparison. Chitosan based biofunctionalized paper-devices showed better stability, up to 100 days as compared to 14 days on unmodified paper, at room temperature. Starch and derivatives thereof have proven their usefulness in paper coating processes. Among these derivatives, cationic starch has been widely used in the paper industry as a flocculation, dispersion and ink fixing agent. In another context, nanoscale cellulosic materials have been shown to improve the strength, retention of fillers, the barrier properties of packaging paper products, and printing qualities. This review summarizes the recent studies on the general components used in paper coating, describes the conventional and alternative synthetic processes of cationic starches and nanocellulose, and deals with their current and potential applications in papermaking, focusing primarily on surface treatments. Moreover, environmental applications have been considered to expand the understanding and usefulness of these materials. There is a pressing need around the world to develop novel functional biodegradable materials to separate oil/water mixtures and emulsions completely. Recently, superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity materials have been attracted attention due to their high efficiency in oil/water separation. However, it is still a challenge to prepare materials that combine oil/water separation and water purification in an environment-friendly way. In this work, biodegradable starch-based nanospheres (SNPs) coated filter paper was prepared in a low-cost, simple, and environmentally friendly manner. The SNPs coating could not only help to change the wettability of the substrate material but also build the hierarchical micro and nano structures which are conducive to separation and purification process. After modification by coating SNPs, the filter paper exhibited excellent performance in a wide range of oil/water mixtures or emulsions separation and the wettability of the filter paper could be regulated by adjusting the pH value. The modified filter paper presented good recyclability after several separation process. Furthermore, the as-prepared filter paper could also remove water-soluble contaminants during the oil/water separation process, thus realizing to combine separation and purification process in one single step. Lignocellulosic raw materials are being utilised in many industrial sectors as a natural source of interesting biopolymers. In the present research, tomato plant agri-waste, were subjected to an enzymatic treatment (pectinase, hemicellulase, xylanase and laccase) with the aim of recovering polymeric matrices contained therein and obtain a good quality fibre. The cellulose content in the enzyme-treated fibres was enriched of 25% compared to the untreated, and a fair reduction in hemicellulose and lignin was registered. Morphological analyses at SEM demonstrated the cleanliness and fibrillation of fibres. Moreover, the thermal profile, water absorption and pulp viscosity of fibres was strongly affected by the composition changes. The paperboard manufactured from an enzymatically treated sample showed increased stiffness when subjected to tensile testing respect to the control. Chitosan with low (25 kDa) and high molecular weight (2100 kDa) were used to enhance performances of paper made from steam-exploded bamboo fibers and nanofibrillated cellulose. Chitosan solutions with concentrations of 0-1.0 wt% were manually applied on paper surface using a facile coating approach with a wire bar. Effects of chitosan coatings on morphology, thermal stability, wettability, mechanical performances and antibacterial properties of the paper were investigated. The larger improvement in the mechanical properties and wettability of the chitosan coated paper was observed with increasing concentrations of chitosan due to the disappearance of empty pores between fibers within a cellulose network by the formed chitosan matrix. These improvements were significantly higher when high molecular weight chitosan was applied. Yet, the addition of chitosan slightly decreased the thermal stability of the coated paper, and the chitosan coating did not improve the antimicrobial properties of the paper. The antimicrobial activity of chitosan against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) was found to be diminished when a chitosan solution was entrapped within paper. A sonication of graphite in polysaccharide (pullulan, chitosan and alginate) is one of the viable methods for the preparation of few-layer graphene. However, the effect of these adsorbed polysaccharides on the electrical performance of the produced graphene so far is not yet clear. In order to investigate the present effect of pullulan, chitosan and alginate on the electrical characteristic of resulted graphene, we have produced few-layer graphene using bath sonication of graphite in pullulan, chitosan and alginate medium for the application as electrical conductive ink in strain-sensitive. Data from the TEM reveals the appearance of folded few-layer graphene flakes after sonication for 150 min while the XPS data shows that the chitosan-based graphene possesses the highest carbon-oxygen ratio of 7.2 as compared to that of the pullulan and alginate-based graphene. By subjecting the produced graphene as the ink for paper-based strain sensor, we have discovered that the chitosan-graphene has the best resistivity value (1.66 × 10 -3 Ω⋅cm) and demonstrate the highest sensitivity towards strain (GF: 18.6). Anxi persimmon is a popular fruit because of its appealing flavor and rich nutrients such as polysaccharides. However, the harvested persimmon fruit softens and deteriorates quickly. This study explored the influences of the treatment of papers containing 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the contents of cell wall polysaccharides and activities of cell wall-degrading enzymes in harvested Anxi persimmons, as well as its effect on fruit softening. The results demonstrated that, in comparison to the control Anxi persimmons, the Anxi persimmons treated with 1.35 μL/L 1-MCP manifested higher fruit firmness, higher contents of protopectin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, but a lower level of water-soluble pectin, lower activities of pectin methylesterase, polygalacturonase, cellulase, and β-galactosidase in Anxi persimmons during postharvest storage. In this paper, nanochitin was used as an alternative natural nanomaterial to combine with cellulose fibers for fabricating high-strength paper. Two typical chitin nanowhiskers having contrasting sign of surface charge were compared to evaluate the enhancement performance on paper in details. The results show that nanochitin with positive charges on the surface has a significant effect on the strength properties of the prepared paper, especially on wet strength. When the dosage of chitin nanowhiskers was 2%, the wet strength index was increased to 2.48 N·m/g, which is important for paper-based analytical devices with the common use in liquid analysis. China, a big paper-making country, produced hundreds of millions of tons of waste paper which contain a lot of fiber every year. Cellulose nanocrystals were extracted from recycled waste paper which can be a high value utilization of secondary fiber. In this paper, cellulose nanocrystals were successfully extracted from waste paper fibers via two different systems, sulfuric acid hydrolysis (SCNCs) and one-step ammonium persulfate (APS) oxidation (OCNCs). This not only broadened the methods of extracting CNCs from waste paper, but also improved the dispersion and reactivity of CNCs. The CNCs products were investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy for functional group structure, X-ray diffraction for crystal structure, TG-DTG for thermal stability and scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope for morphology. The results showed that both OCNCs and SCNCs were a rod-like structure. The crystallinity of OCNCs and SCNCs increased to 72.45 and 77.56, but with a low yield of 22.42% and 41.22%, respectively. The result also suggested H 2 O 2 formed by decomposition of APS, selectively oxidized the hydroxyl on the C 6 in cellulose to carboxyl, introduced 0.57 mmol/g carboxyl. The production of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) usually consist of two different phases. First of all, lignocellulosic fibers need to be treated by means of either chemical, enzymatic or mechanical treatments. Then, in the second phase, the treated lignocellulosic fibers need to be submitted to mechanical fibrillation. This last treatment is usually critical in terms of energy consumption, as well as for providing the appropriate characteristics to the resulting CNF. In the present work, we have investigated the effect of fibrillating lignocellulosic nanofibers (LCNF) made from eucalyptus sawdust by means of high-pressure homogenization and grinding. The obtained results showed that, to achieve the same property level of LCNF, the grinder consumed 12.86 kWh/kg, while the homogenizer, 19.07 kWh/kg, bringing to the light the suitability of grinding for LCNF production. Overall, the present work shows the feasibility of using eucalyptus sawdust, which is a residue from the pulp and paper industry, as raw material for LCNF production, at the same time that brings to the light the relevance of the fibrillation equipment in terms of energy efficiency, approaching the production of LCNF to the industry., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. This paper introduces a cheap simple MWCNTs@paper biosensor for the detection of CA19-9, which is a biomarker of pancreatic cancer. By adding the CA19-9 antibody to the surface of MWCNTs which are deposited on the microporous filter paper, the correlation between the concentration of CA19-9 and resistance of biosensor element was linear due to the site-specific binding of antigen and antibody. The detection range is wide (0 U/mL-at least 1000 U/mL), and even in the low concentration of CA19-9, the linearity remains satisfying. Based on this property, it could be used for the detection of early-stage pancreatic cancer. Besides, this research originally introduces a vacuum freeze-drying method for the long-term preservation of biosensor, prolonging its storage time from 3 h to at least 7 days, which signifcantly promoted its value in practical application. The present study delineates the preparation, characterization, and application of (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES)/Caprine liver-derived extracellular matrix (CLECM) coated paper matrix for cell delivery. Here, we exploited positively charged surface of the paper matrix (as imparted by APTES derivatization) to improve the biological responses of the cells. Our results demonstrated that the functionalized paper matrixes favored the adhesion, growth, and proliferation of multiple cell types including normal, transformed, cancerous, and stem cells as compared to the pristine paper matrix. Upon implantation into the mice model, the developed paper matrix supported infiltration of the host cells and vasculature without showing any evidence of significant systemic toxicity. Moreover, the cells cultured on the paper matrix, when delivered to the CAM and mouse models, showed an enhanced vascular network around the substrate, thereby confirming its potential to deliver the cells in vivo. Together, the study confirms that the reported paper-based platform is easy to fabricate, cheap, portable and could efficiently be applied to cell delivery applications for either tissue repair or the development of humanized animal model., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Sources of pulping red liquor, which is produced by acidic sulfite cooking in paper industry, consisted of lignosulphonate and polysaccharide, commonly considered as waste or byproducts and used in low value, such as surfactant and adhesive are wide and its price is low. Here a novel method for high value-added utilization of the pulp and paper industry waste for fabricating super-swelling biopolymer hydrogels is introduced. In contrast to other costly utilizations, which are needed to separate red liquor or purify hemicellulose and lignin before using, it is first time to directly utilize red liquor to prepare hydrogels without pretreatment. FT-IR, SEM, TGA and XRD are used to determine structure and morphology of hydrogels. It is excited the hydrogels fabricated from acrylic (AA) and industry waste exhibit super-swelling and slow release behaviors in water. The current research intended to explore the hardwood pulps capabilities to produce cellulose (CNPs) and lignocellulose nanopapers (LNPs) and feasible enhancement of their performance for possible utilization in sustainable packaging. The high-yield hardwood pulps were then bleached to show the fundamental role of residual lignin on the ultrafine fibrillation processes, structural and barrier properties of nanopapers. X-ray diffraction results demonstrated that the crystallinity and crystallite size of CNPs and LNPs were lower than the corresponding starting pulps. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the average nanofibril diameter of the CNPs and LNPs are 35 nm and 23 nm, respectively. Elastic modulus of LNPs was found to be 9.1 and 10.8 GPa for Chemimechanical and Neutral sulfite semichemical pulps, respectively. The semi-porous and consolidated structure of LNPs prepared from CMP fibers contributed to yield the lowest water vapor transmission rate i.e. 108 g/m 2 .day which is promising for potential applications in packaging materials., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Laccase has the enormous potential to be implemented as the multitasking biocatalyst in whole process of paper making. The enzyme can utilize effectively for pulping, delignification of pulps as alone or in the combination with other bleaching enzymes. Laccase has been evaluated for the biografting of pulp fibers, decolorize and stabilize the effluent of the paper mills, biotransformation of high molecular weight (HMW) lignins to lower molecular weight (LMW) aromatic compounds. Further this enzyme has the huge possibilities to apply for deinking of old newsprint (ONP) and pitch removal from varieties of the different pulps. There is no doubt on versatility mode of action of laccases in paper industry, but still there is limited commercialization of this enzyme has been possible, because of laccases has the less redox potential (E0) and needs mediators for the oxidation of non phenolic substrates, production of enzyme is cost intensive at large scale. This review is providing the proper updated information on the state of the art of different applications of laccase in paper industry. Early stage diagnosis of breast cancer by monitoring the proteins in human biological fluids is the best method and the first section toward efficient therapy, delaying metastasis and hindrance mortality. In this study, graphite ink was synthesized and combined with CA 15-3 antibody in order to develop a novel immunosensor for detection of CA 15-3, breast cancer biomarker. Conductivity of bioink was examined by designing various conductive patterns on paper using a rollerball pen. Electrochemical behavior of engineered immunosensor was evaluated through employing sensitive diagnostic technique, DPV (differential pulse voltammetry). Under optimal conditions, the linear concentration range and low limit of quantification (LLOQ) of designed immunosensor was 15-250 U/mL and 15 U/mL, respectively. A new bacterial lipolytic enzyme Est903 was obtained from paper mill sludge via metagenomic approach. Est903 displayed moderate similarities to two lipolytic enzymes from Rhodopirellula islandica and contained a distinctive pentapeptide motif (GFSAG) that differed from those of all known fourteen families of bacterial lipolytic enzymes. Est903 was regarded as from a new bacterial lipolytic enzyme family through multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis. The recombinant Est903 showed the highest activity for ρ-nitrophenol butyrate. The pH optimum and temperature optimum of the recombinant enzyme was 9.0 and 51 °C, respectively. Also, this enzyme displayed moderate thermostability, high activity under alkaline conditions, and good tolerance against several organic solvents. In addition, the compatibility test and washing performance analysis revealed that Est903 had good compatibility with commercial laundry detergent and high cleaning ability of oil stains. Metagenomics has emerged to isolate novel enzymes from the uncultured microbiota in the environment. In this study, the metagenomic data obtained from camel rumen was considered as the potential source of microbial xylanase enzymes with proper activity in extreme conditions. The metagenomic data were assembled and contigs were used for in-silico identification of candidate thermostable enzyme. A novel thermostable xylanase enzyme, named PersiXyn1, with 1146 bp full-length gene which encodes a 381 amino acid protein was identified. Using the DNA template extracted from camel rumen metagenomic samples, the candidate enzyme genes were cloned and expressed in proper E. coli strains. The phylogenetic analysis showed the evolutionary position of PersiXyn1 among the known thermostable xylanases. The results of the CD analysis and determining the secondary structure of the enzyme, confirmed the presence of a high percentage of β-sheets as an important characteristic of thermophilic xylanases. The PersiXyn1 was active at a broad range of pH (6-11) and temperature (25-90 °C). The optimum pH and temperature were 8 and 40 °C respectively, and the enzyme maintained 80% of its maximum activity in the pH 8 and temperature 40 °C for 1 h. The Scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrograph of enzyme treated pulp clearly showed that the effective use of enzymes in fiber separation may reduce the cost of carton paper production. The novelty of this enzyme lies in the fact that it is highly active and stable in a broad range of pH and temperature. In this research, collagen hydrolysates with different average molecular weights (Mn¯) from leather collagen were chosen as raw materials. Five environmental-friendly sizing agents (SA) were prepared by cross-linking collagen hydrolysates with glycol diglycidyl ether (GDE) and further grafting them with butyl acrylate (BA) and styrene (St). Then the compound sizing agents (SGDESA-x, x = 1, 2, 3 and 4) were obtained by simple physical mixing of GDESA and starch. The surface sizing performance of GDESA and compound sizing agents were studied. The research result shows that both physical, mechanical properties and water resistance of the corrugated paper coated by GDESA were significantly improved when Mn¯ of collagen hydrolysate was about 10,000, and its emulsion exhibited robust stability in long standing time. Furthermore, when the SGDESA-2 was used as a sizing agent, the coated corrugated paper exhibited strong water resistance, good physical and mechanical properties even after refolded for 20 times., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
