Abstract

The article discusses the social conditions and social marginal status of the haratine, who consist of former slaves and their descendants, in the shanty-towns (kebbes), or niche-settlements, of Nouakchott, Islamic republic of Mauritania from the 1960s through the early 21st century. The impact that slavery has on the haratine people is discussed.

The article discusses the social legacy of slavery in post-slave emancipation, or abolition, in the British colonial Sierra Leone from 1928 through 1956. An overview of the role that the British colonial government administration played in efforts to transition former slaves into forced labor, including the impact it had on local chiefs' ability to employ forced labor, is provided.
