Abstract
- The article discusses the social conditions and social marginal status of the haratine, who consist of former slaves and their descendants, in the shanty-towns (kebbes), or niche-settlements, of Nouakchott, Islamic republic of Mauritania from the 1960s through the early 21st century. The impact that slavery has on the haratine people is discussed.
