Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) allow the use of battery-operated nodes to provide easy deployment, even in harsh environments, and are low maintenance. The optimal network design can be difficult because several constraints and requirements must be considered among all the power consumption. For this reason, specific approaches, also based on soft computing methods, can be applied in such a way as to further decrease the energy consumption in IWSNs. To this end, this paper proposes a fuzzy logic based mechanism that, according to the battery level and the ratio of throughput to workload, defines the sleeping time of sensor devices in an IWSN based on IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is introduced to obtain the optimal values and parameters of the proposed fuzzy logic controller (FLC), i.e., optimizing the membership functions, by varying their range, to achieve the best results regarding the battery life of sensor nodes. This paper provides a detailed description of the FLC configuration, a logical analysis of the PSO algorithm for the derivation of best performance conditions values, and simulative assessments obtained through MATLAB simulations. The evaluation of the state of transformer oil-immersed insulation based on the traditional methods becomes unreliable due to the nonuniform aging effect. To address this issue, a novel model for accessing the aging information of transformer oil-immersed insulation at the hotspot is proposed. In this article, frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) is selected as the carrier for characterizing the aging states of oil-immersed insulation. The multiobjective function for reversing the FDS of the hotspot is constructed based on the dielectric response equivalent circuit. Then, the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm with the multiconstraint scheme is proposed to solve the multiobjective function, by which the FDS data of the transformer hotspot region are acquired. The verification results indicate that the average standard deviation between the computed FDS of the hotspot region and the measured data is less than 0.26. The contribution of this article is in the exploration of the proposed model as a potential tool to extract the FDS data of the hotspot region. A large class of three-phase electrical power systems possess symmetry conditions that make it possible to describe their behavior using single-input single-output transfer functions with complex coefficients. In such cases, an extended root locus method can be used to design control laws, even though the actual systems are multi-input multi-output. In this paper, the symmetric conditions for a large class of power systems are analyzed. Then, the root locus method is revisited for systems with complex coeffcients and used for the analysis and control design of power systems. Although the concept of a multiphase drive system dates back to the middle of the 20th century, the initial pace of development was rather slow, as witnessed by the first two surveys of the area published in the beginning of this century. However, considerably new developments have resulted in the last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of this century, leading to an authoritative survey of the asymmetrical six-phase drive control and subsequently of the review of the complete area. This also initiated the organization and subsequent publication of the first IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics "Special Section on Multiphase Machines and Drives" in May 2008, which commenced with another survey paper, and that contained 12 original research papers. Since the publication of this Special Section in May 2008, the level of interest and pace of developments in the area have further accelerated and substantial new knowledge has been generatedwith an ever-increasing number of published research papers and reported new industrial applications. Such a trend has been emphasized in a recent paper. It therefore seemed appropriate to revisit the area and organize this Special Section as a sequel to the first one. The call for the Special Section papers resulted in 51 submissions, almost twice as many as the total back in 2008, thus confirming a substantial growth of the area. Indeed, the amount of new knowledge acquired since the publication of the first Special Section in 2008 has meant that it was not possible to provide a complete and thorough survey of the field in a single review paper. The main objective of this two-part state-of-the-art paper called “Recent Advances in the Design, Modeling, and Control of Multiphase Machines” is to present latest contributions in the multiphase machines' field. The first part of this paper focuses on the recent progress in the design, modeling, and control, whereas the drive is in healthy operation. This second part presents relevant contributions in two not analyzed fields. The first is in relation with the use of the additional degrees of freedom of multiphase machines and the exploitation of their fault-tolerant capabilities without adding extra hardware. The second one analyzes multiphase generation, particularly in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems and stand-alone applications. This paper suggests a cascade output voltage regulation strategy for dc/dc boost converters that embeds a robust inner-loop current controller against parameter variations. The contributions of this paper are divided into two parts. The first contribution is to present a simple and robust inner-loop current controller despite parameter uncertainties, guaranteeing the stability of the whole closed-loop system including the first-order internal dynamics. The second contribution is to show that an outer-loop proportional–integral regulator can stabilize the output voltage error without relying on any parameter information. Simulations and experiments using a 3-kW dc/dc boost converter showed that the proposed method offers satisfactory closed-loop performance in the presence of parameter uncertainties. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have been used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from portable electronics to electric vehicles. During repetitive charging and discharging, a battery's capacity fades due to electrochemical reactions such as solid electrolyte interphase growth. Li-ion batteries reach an end-of-life (EOL) point, after which using them is not recommended. However, some unhealthy batteries reach their EOL sooner than expected. A qualification test is usually conducted to evaluate the reliability of Li-ion batteries and classify unhealthy batteries, but this test requires several months. This paper develops a data-driven method to reduce the qualification time by detecting anomalies before EOL. This method detects an anomaly in the capacity fade curve of unhealthy batteries based on their capacity fade trend. Since the developed method detects anomalies of unhealthy batteries before EOL, the method is effective in reducing the time for the qualification test of Li-ion batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to improve the pulp quality and to reduce the energy consumption, the fiber length distribution (FLD) is generally employed as one of the important technological indexes in the refining process. Considering that the traditional mean and variance of fiber length are unable to adequately characterize the non-Gaussian distribution properties, this paper proposes a novel geometric analysis based double closed-loop iterative learning control (ILC) method for probability density function (PDF) shaping of output FLD in the refining process. Primarily, a radial basis function (RBF) neural network with Gaussian-type is utilized to approximate the square root PDF in the inner loop, where the RBF basis function parameters (center and width) are tuned between any two adjacent batches by using an ILC law, and the subspace identification method can be applied to establish the state-space model of weight vector. Then, for the sake of accelerating the convergence rate of the closed-loop system, a geometric analysis based ILC method is adopted in the outer loop. Hydraulic reciprocating seals are dynamic sealing elements used in hydraulic actuators that play a very important role in preventing leakage. In this paper, a multisensor monitoring scheme including Fiber Bragg Grating sensors, fluid pressure sensors, and reciprocating displacement sensor was designed to analyze the leakage of hydraulic cylinder in a complete reciprocating work cycle. A complete hydraulic cylinder reciprocating cycle includes the extending process of piston rod, the full extension of piston rod, the retracting process of piston rod, and the full retraction of piston rod. Through an especially designed test bench, multisensor monitoring data were obtained under different wear degree of the piston seals. The analysis results show that there will be a “pull-back effect” in the return stroke of the piston seal. Therefore, leakage-based monitoring methods used in existing studies may not accurately reflect the wear of piston seals. If it is desired to detect wear of the piston seal during its actual operation, the contact pressure of the piston seal must be monitored. This paper presents data-driven approaches to improve the active power output of wind turbines based on estimating their health condition. The main procedure includes estimations of fault degree and health condition level, and optimal power dispatch control. The proposed method can adjust the active power output of individual turbines according to their health condition and can thus optimize the total energy output of a wind farm. In the paper, extreme learning machine algorithm and Bonferroni interval are applied to estimate fault degree, while an analytic hierarchy process is used to estimate the health condition level. A scheme for power dispatch control is formulated based on the estimated health condition. Models have been identified from supervisory control and data acquisition data acquired from an operational wind farm, which contains temperature data of gearbox bearing and generator winding. The results show that the proposed method can maximize the operation efficiency of the wind farm while significantly reducing the fatigue loading on the faulty wind turbines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a modular on-road wireless power transfer system with interoperable power adjustment mechanism. The paper is anticipated to enhance the capability of on-road charging during the movement of automated guided vehicles (AGV), by which the traveling mileage is increased, while the battery volume is decreased. The system design includes an interoperable power adjustment technique based on the detected impedance, and the moving position of AGV can be, hence, comprehended so as to facilitate the adjustment of the output power from each transmission module in a more flexible way. Through the investigation of on-road charging efficiency, all of coil magnetic analysis, misalignment charging evaluation, system stress simulation, and resonant characteristics investigation are performed. Overhead lines are important parts of distribution networks at present. Assessment and prediction of their health status is of great significance to ensure the reliable operation of distribution network. This paper presents a method for assessing and predicting the health status of overhead lines based on health index (HI). First, the key features set of overhead lines including ontological and nonontological factors is determined. Then, a calculation method for evaluating HI based on analytic hierarchy process and technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution is proposed. Subsequently, the health assessment results of the actual 110 and 10 kV overhead lines located in China show that the proposed method could reflect the actual situation of overhead lines well. Finally, based on the proposed method, this paper takes two areas of China, Beijing and Nanjing, which have different climatic conditions, as research objects, and studies the influence of natural factors on the health status of overhead lines, respectively. Based on the analysis results, the health statuses of the overhead lines in the two regions are predicted. The nine papers in this special section focus on photovoltaic module and sub-module level power electronics. Grid connected photovoltaic energy systems have experienced an explosive growth over the last decade, with a cumulative installed capacity surpassing the 400 GW milestone as of 2017. Among PV system configurations, distributed module-level converter architectures can lead to a higher energy yield by mitigating partial shading, persistent shading (soiling, snow, bird droppings, and fallen leaves), mismatch, and aging, through a higher maximum power point tracking (MPPT) efficiency. Also, distributed electronics might be the key for implementing diagnostic and prognostic actions at a module level. Among these configurations, microinverters (also known as ac-module inverter), which connect a single PV module to the grid, and PV power optimizers, which are dc–dc converters performing the MPPT function at a module level, have attracted the academic and industrial interest in the last decade. This paper investigates the critical parameter design technique for a cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) with selective harmonic elimination (SHE)/compensation (SHC) for single-phase systems. The critical parameters include the filter inductance, the number of H-bridge cells, the dc-bus voltage and the switching frequency. This paper derives the relationship of electrical parameters, topologies, and modulation techniques to the voltage/current harmonic envelopes, and compares the filter inductor design for an H-Bridge with sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM), an H-Bridge (HB) with SHE/SHC and a CHB with SHE/SHC. Furthermore, a harmonic-envelope-based approach is developed to determine the optimum design parameters. The developed approach designs the harmonic envelope with two proposed criteria: the first one is the capacity criterion, which guarantees that the fundamental and controllable components are within the applicable solution range to avoid overmodulation; the other one is the attenuation criterion, which ensures that the uncontrollable harmonic complies with the grid limit. Air pollutants do much harm to human safety. In particular, the fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a complex air pollutant which is composed of the particles beneath the aerodynamic diameters of 2.5 $\mu$ m, very possibly causes severe diseases since it is easy to intrude into the lungs. To that end, in this paper, we design a new picture-based predictor of PM2.5 concentration (PPPC), which employs the pictures acquired using mobile phones or cameras to make a real-time estimation of PM2.5 concentration. First, using a large body of pictures which were captured under the good weather conditions, i.e., very low PM2.5 concentration, naturalness statistics (NS) models are built upon entropy features in spatial and transform domains. Second, for a novel picture, we measure its deviation degree from the above-mentioned NS models, considering the fact that the naturalness of a picture tends to reduce with the PM2.5 concentration increased. Third, a simple nonlinear function is introduced to map the deviation degree to the PM2.5 concentration. In comparison to existing relevant state-of-the-art predictors, sufficient experimental results manifest the superiority of the proposed PPPC model in terms of prediction accuracy and implementation efficiency. This paper presents the accurate modeling of HVdc links for the dynamic studies of automatic generation control/load frequency control (AGC/LFC) of the multiarea interconnected power system. In earlier AGC studies, HVdc links were simply modeled by using the first-order transfer function with system time constant ${T_{{\rm{dc}}}}$. It was argued that ${T_{{\rm{dc}}}}$ is the time required by HVdc links to establish dc current after following a load disturbance in the power system. However, no mathematical or analytical justification was provided in support to the existing transfer function model of HVdc links. This paper presents the accurate modeling of HVdc links for AGC studies. The comparative analysis has also been performed to demonstrate error being accrued due to the use of the conventional model of HVdc links. Furthermore, this paper also implements the inertia emulation based control strategy in AGC, which allows us to harness the stored energy from the capacitance of HVdc links for AGC operations. Part I of this paper proposed a development process and a system platform for the development of autonomous cars based on a distributed system architecture. The proposed development methodology enabled the design and development of an autonomous car with benefits such as a reduction in computational complexity, fault-tolerant characteristics, and system modularity. In this paper (Part II), a case study of the proposed development methodology is addressed by showing the implementation process of an autonomous driving system. In order to describe the implementation process intuitively, core autonomous driving algorithms (localization, perception, planning, vehicle control, and system management) are briefly introduced and applied to the implementation of an autonomous driving system. We are able to examine the advantages of a distributed system architecture and the proposed development process by conducting a case study on the autonomous system implementation. Voltage source converter (VSC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems have attractive advantages compared to classical thyristor-based HVDC transmission systems. However, VSC-based HVDC transmission systems are vulnerable to dc side fault, and expensive dc circuit breakers are required to protect them against dc fault. This paper proposes a control method of a dc fault-resilient VSC which can be protected against dc fault without using expensive dc circuit breakers. In the VSC configuration, several H-bridge modules are connected in cascade, so the voltage balancing control of several floating dc capacitors is required. In this paper, an appropriate control structure with the capacitor voltage balancing controller is proposed. The appropriate control algorithm for dc fault operation and recovery after dc fault is also proposed. PSCAD simulation results are presented to validate the proposed control structure under normal and dc fault operating conditions. In a paper written by Choi and Lee (IEEE Trans. Ind. Electron., vol. 56, no. 6, pp. 2039–2046, Jun. 2009), the authors propose a new antiwindup strategy for the proportional–integral speed controller, to suppress the undesired side effect known as integrator windup when large set-point changes are made. In this paper, we point out that there are obvious errors in the paper. Our paper corrects these errors and informs of further study to improve the antiwindup method. This paper considers real-time energy-optimal trajectory generation for a servomotor system that performs a single-axis point-to-point positioning task for a fixed time interval. The servomotor system is subject to acceleration and speed constraints. The trajectory generation is formulated as a linear-constrained optimal control problem (LCOCP), and the Pontryagin's maximum principle is applied to derive necessary optimality conditions. Instead of solving multipoint boundary value problems directly, this paper proposes a novel real-time algorithm based on two realizations: solving the LCOCP is equivalent to determining an optimal time interval of the speed-constrained arc and solving a specific acceleration-constrained optimal control problem (ACOCP), and solving an ACOCP is equivalent to determining optimal switch times of acceleration-constrained arcs and solving a specific two-point boundary value problem (TBVP). The proposed algorithm constructs sequences of time intervals, ACOCPs, switch times, and TBVPs, such that all sequences converge to their counterparts of an optimal solution of the LCOCP. Numerical simulation verifies that the proposed algorithm is capable of generating energy-optimal trajectories in real time. Experiments validate that the use of energy-optimal trajectories as references in a servomotor system does not compromise tracking performance but leads to considerable less energy consumption. Permanent magnet (PM) materials are nowadays widely used in the electrical machine manufacturing industry. The eddy-current loss models of PMs used in electrical machines are frequently discussed in research papers. In magnetic steel materials we have, in addition to eddy-current losses, there are hysteresis losses when alternating current or a rotating flux travels through the material. Should a similar phenomenon be also taken into account in calculating the losses of PMs? Every now and then, authors seem to assume that some significant hysteresis losses are present in rotating machine PMs. This paper studies the mechanisms of possible hysteresis losses in PMs and their role in PMs when used in rotating electrical machines. Soft-switching techniques of transformerless photovoltaic grid-connected inverters (TLIs) can significantly reduce switching losses, as well as soften switching processes. Conventional dc–ac soft-switching configurations proposed by Dr. Deepakraj M. Divan are invalid in TLIs because of the leakage current problem. In order to develop soft-switching techniques in TLIs, this paper proposes a new soft-switching configuration and a procedure to guide the invention of soft-switching TLIs. First, this paper proposes two basic resonance tanks related to dc bus polarities, and then, uses these basic tanks to elevate four popular full-bridge-type TLIs according to the proposed guideline. As a result, four soft-switching TLIs are gained. Second, this paper picks obtained soft-switching highly efficient and reliable inverter concept (HERIC) as example to analyze its soft-switching operation principle and performance. As a consequence, all active switches of the gained soft-switching HERIC circuit are switched under both of zero-current turn-on and turn-off conditions; the reverse recovery problem of freewheeling diodes is alleviated owing to the zero-current turn-off of diodes; meanwhile, the common-mode voltage at the switching frequency scale is still constant. Finally, some experimental results from a 3-kW universal prototype at 50-kHz switching frequency are provided to verify the effectiveness of the main contributions of this paper. The need for lighter and smaller railway traction drives and recent advances in power semiconductor technology have resulted in a new energy conversion paradigm, one without the classical heavy and bulky line-frequency transformer. Several multilevel topologies have been introduced over the past years, all having in common the use of medium-frequency (MF) energy conversion to reduce the weight and volume of the magnetic components. This paper is concerned with the design of the input filter for an MF traction converter, focusing on a solution that minimizes the filter's overall mass. Two filter topologies are investigated, namely a single-pole filter (inductor) and a passively damped $LCL$ filter. The paper first describes the requirements to be fulfilled, establishes the spectrum to consider for the design, and proposes a method to determine the initial parameters of the filter's components. In this paper, the conventional I- and T-type three-level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) inverter for low-voltage renewable energy systems is first investigated. Literature research shows that the T-type inverter improves I-type's insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) $+$ IGBT current paths. However, the IGBT $+$ diode paths are the same. The calculation in this paper further reveals that the IGBT $+$ diode current paths dominate the conduction losses and even the whole semiconductor losses. Based on the aforementioned recognitions, a novel T-type inverter is presented as an alternative to be applied in the low-voltage renewable energy systems. In the proposed 3L-NPC, four CoolMosfets replace the IGBT $+$ diode middle bidirectional switch. In the proposed topology, there is no diode involved in the current path supposing the unity power factor. In this way, the conduction loss is expected to be reduced compared with that from the conventional T-type 3L-NPC, particularly in the low and medium power ranges. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper, a data-driven controller design approach for batch processes is proposed. In this strategy, based on a suitable transformation of the input and output signals, a mathematical description of the process dynamics is not needed, and the working cycle is guaranteed to adapt to the desired operating conditions. Throughout this paper, all the steps of the above algorithm are described in detail with the help of an experimental case study dedicated to a gravimetric blender, which is a key element in the plastic extrusion process. Recently, population aging and declining birth rate have become very serious, and people who lack walking capability have truly increased in Japan. To address this issue, gait training has become a requirement for them. Although some training systems have been researched in the past, a training system that entails guidance of walking has not been researched well. This paper focuses on guidance of walking, and it is aimed to develop a training system that utilizes the activity and passivity of the trainee. In addition, rhythmic walking, which takes walking stability and trainee safety into account, is aimed for. In this paper, an improved electric wheelchair is used as gait-training equipment (GTE); then, the trainee is towed by the GTE, and walking is guided. In this paper, a targeted walking cycle is predefined, and the GTE must distinguish the cycle in order to guide walking. Therefore, this paper uses the center of gravity (COG) of the trainee as the index. Thus, the GTE tows the trainee when the swing leg moves more forward than the stance leg; then, rhythmic walking can be guided. In addition, this paper proposes a method to control the GTE by a proportional-differential controller based on virtual compliance that is composed of mass, spring, and damper. The gait training can be safely achieved by deciding the desired position and velocity of the GTE from the tow force through virtual compliance. In this paper, the validity of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulation and experiment. The validity of the proposed system is verified by using a four-link robot whose geometric expression is known as the trainee; then, the application of the proposed method will be extended to a human trainee by only adjusting the parameters. The main objective of this paper is to study and validate the effectiveness of the tensor-product (TP)-model transformation in a state-dependent nonlinear controller design for a prototypical aeroelastic system that exhibits a variety of control phenomena such as limit cycle oscillation, flutter, and even chaotic vibrations. In this paper, the TP-model transformation is applied to transform the identified analytic model of the prototypical aeroelastic system to TP-model form whereupon linear matrix inequality-based controller-design theorems, within the parallel- distributed-compensation (PDC) frameworks, can be immediately executed. High-voltage pulse-generators can be used effectively for bacterial decontamination in water treatment applications. Applying a pulsed electric field to the infected water sample guarantees killing of harmful germs and bacteria. In this paper, a modular high-voltage pulse-generator with sequential charging is proposed for water treatment via underwater pulsed streamer corona discharge. The proposed generator consists of series-connected modules similar to an arm of a modular multilevel converter. The modules’ capacitors are charged sequentially from a relatively low-voltage dc supply, then they are connected in series and discharged into the load. Two configurations are proposed in this paper, one for low repetitive pulse rate applications, and the other for high repetitive pulse rates. In the first topology, the equivalent resistance of the infected water sample is used as a charging resistance for the generator’s capacitors during the charging process. While in the second topology, the water resistance is bypassed during the charging process, and an external charging resistance with proper value is used instead. In this paper, detailed designs for the proposed pulse-generators are presented and validated by simulation results using MATLAB. A phase-locked loop (PLL) is commonly used in grid-connected power converter for synchronization. A single input single output (SISO) linear model of PLL with the phase angle of the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage as input and the estimated phase angle as the output is generally used in the PLL analysis and design. However, an undesirable coupling between the magnitude and phase of the input voltage is present when a filtering stage is incorporated before the control loop, which a SISO model cannot capture, and could result in a significant disturbance in the PLL estimated phase during grid faults. This paper proposes a generalized multi-input multi-output (MIMO) linear model that captures the complete PLL dynamics during symmetrical faults for a PLL equipped with any prefilter. Furthermore, a compensation method that decouples the magnitude dynamics of the input voltage from the phase dynamics is proposed in this paper. The proposed compensation improves the PLL's phase tracking performance by ensuring that the prefiltered PLL acts only on the PCC voltage phase changes. A vital application of the proposed compensation method for PLL is during a grid fault case, wherein the converters are expected to contribute to the fault current, which requires an accurate measurement of the PCC voltage phase. This paper discusses the dynamic interaction of multi active power filters (APFs) paralleled with a weak power grid. In order to analyze the dynamic interaction from multi APFs, the output impedance of an APF is solved. The influences of both circuit and control parameters on the output impedance are analyzed. Based on the output impedance of an APF, the dynamic influences of an APF on the other APF connected to the weak grid are discussed. As shown in this paper, the stability of an APF is improved with an increased output filter inductance and some control parameters to reduce its bandwidth. The proposed analysis methods can be used not only for multi APFs but also for the other multi-inverters connected to a weak grid. Recently, the world's first ever power electronic traction transformer (PETT) for a 15-kV 16.7-Hz railway grid has been newly developed, commissioned, and installed on the test locomotive, where the PETT is presently in use. The design and development of the PETT are described in two parts of this paper. The details related to the 1.2-MVA medium voltage (MV) PETT prototype, including the electrical design of the power circuit, the sizing and characterization of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) devices, the design of the medium-frequency transformer, the cooling system design, insulation coordination, and protection, are presented in this part, while the preceding paper deals with the overall system requirements and control system design based on the low-voltage (LV) PETT prototype. The concept of energy Internet (EI) is very promising due to its ability to integrate distributed generators and storage devices. Energy routers (ERs) enable highly efficient, reliable, and flexible power system operation. To dynamically control and optimize energy flow in EI, an extensive communication is required. Considering the diversity of generators and ERs, it is crucial that such communication is achieved in a standardized and interoperable way. In this paper, an improved energy routing algorithm and its impact in EI operation are demonstrated. Furthermore, a full communication solution is developed for ERs and their interaction with grid operator. This paper proposes an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 communication-based power routing algorithm in microgrids. Optimal selection of source and routing path is achieved according to the proposed algorithm and communicated to the ERs via IEC 61850 based communication. The classification of distinct problems of insulators in the distribution networks is a task that requires operator's experience. The applications of techniques to automate the inspection of electrical systems with the objective of detecting faults in insulators have shown to be reasonable alternatives to improve reliability in power grid. In this paper, based on the development of an experimental setup, signals are acquired considering three distinct faults in insulators. In this case, 13.8 kV (rms) is applied in drilled, contaminated, and good insulators considering an ultrasound detector connected to a computer. In the sequence, a multiclass classification method is proposed considering the ensemble of classifiers. The method considers the association of five distinct techniques, Bottom-Up segmentation, wavelet energy coefficient, principal component analysis, and particle swarm optimization associated with ensemble extreme learning machine (EN-ELM). Named optimized ensemble extreme learning machine, the present approach outperforms the original EN-ELM method. Robust and accurate control of a flapping-wing aerial vehicle (FWAV) system is a challenging problem due to the existence of backlash-like hysteresis nonlinearity. This paper proposes uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE)-based control with output feedback for FWAV systems. The approach enables the acquisition of the approximate plant model with only a partial knowledge of system parameters. For the design of the controller, only the bandwidth information of the unknown plant model is needed, which is available through the UDE filter. The stability analysis of the closed-loop system with the UDE-based controller is presented. It is shown that the proposed control scheme can ensure the boundedness of the control signals. The transverse dynamic force microscope (TDFM) and its shear force sensing principle permit true noncontact force detection in contrast to typical atomic force microscopes. The two TDFM measurement signals for the cantilever allow, in principle, two different scanning modes of which, in particular, the second presented here permits a full-scale noncontact scan. Previous research work mainly focused on developing the sensing mechanism, whereas this paper investigates the vertical axis dynamics for advanced robust closed-loop control. This paper presents a new TDFM digital control solution, built on field-programmable gate array equipment running at high implementation frequencies. The integrated control system allows the implementation of online customizable controllers, and raster scans in two modes at very high detection bandwidth and nanoprecision. This paper proposes and investigates a novel near-optimal finite-control-set model predictive control (NOP-MPC) algorithm to control the grid-connected, pulsewidth-modulator-driven voltage source converters with LCL filters. Exploiting the convex and elliptical paraboloid properties of the cost error, NOP-MPC adopts a systematic iterative algorithm within each control cycle to progressively synthesize finite sets of virtual voltage vectors (VVs) for the control optimization stage. The synthesis has the inherent features of respecting the converter voltage limits and converging the sets of VV candidates toward the global optimal point. The fixed-switching-frequency feature of NOP-MPC is expected to ease the LCL filter design. Effects of computational delay, pulsewidth modulation delay, and deadtime are considered and compensated successfully. A two-vector-variable cost function is used to actively damp the inherent LC resonance through an adjustable, weighting-factor-based damping level. Smart buildings form an integral part of the smart grid that lowers electricity cost. This objective can be achieved by using suitable enhanced algorithms and techniques. The motivation of this paper is the request for an economical decision-making system from a commercial company in Singapore. This paper presents an economical building management system (EBMS) concept inspired by the building management system and machine learning. EBMS improves the decision-making process through rule-based algorithm within the system. Machine learning algorithm is included as part of EBMS to enhance the computational calculation for the electricity distribution. It includes the function of self-making decision for purchasing electricity based on forecasting system for electricity price or real-time electricity price data when facility managers are not present. EBMS uses multiagent system to communicate, interact, and negotiate with multiple agents for energy supply and demand in the building. Simulation studies have shown the potential of EBMS concept to provide a cost reduction solution up to 61.42% savings for smart buildings. In this paper, the modular consequent-pole (MCP) rotor is adopted in the fractional-slot interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine to utilize the strong flux-focusing effect and reduce the leakage flux. Hence, the torque density and utilization ratio of permanent magnet (PM) material can be improved. However, the unacceptable unbalanced magnetic force (UMF) may arise due to asymmetric airgap flux density produced by consequent-pole topology. Thus, a pole-shaping method based on three-sectional arcs is proposed to suppress it. Due to the relatively complex rotor structure, the multiobjective optimization combined finite-element method with genetic algorithm is performed in this paper. Furthermore, the electromagnetic performance of the IPM machine with MCP rotor (namely IPM-MCP machine), including the open-circuit airgap flux density, phase back EMF, torque, PM utilization ratio, efficiency, flux-weakening capability and UMF, are compared with the conventional surface-mounted PM (SPM), IPM, and consequent-pole IPM (IPM-CP) machines. It is demonstrated that the IPM-MCP machine obtains the largest output torque in these machines. Meanwhile, the IPM-MCP and IPM-CP machines respectively have >30% and >20% higher PM utilization ratio than the conventional SPM and IPM machines while they obtain similar torque ripple and efficiency. Moreover, the IPM-MCP machine can obtain much lower UMF than the IPM-CP machine due to the effective suppression of asymmetric airgap flux density. The ability to monitor the quality of the metal forming process as well as the machine's condition is of significant importance in modern industrial processes. In the case where a physical device (i.e., sensor) cannot be deployed due to the characteristics of the system, models that rely on the estimation of both the applied force and the dynamic behavior of the machine (i.e., system) are adopted. The development of such models and the corresponding algorithms used to estimate the above-mentioned quantities has attracted the interest of the community. The main contribution of this paper is the estimation of a servo press force by employing a novel dual particle filter based algorithm, achieving a maximum relative error in the force estimation of 3.6%. This paper aims to propose a new Vernier reluctance machine (VRM), which integrates the advantages of a robust rotor structure, good torque density, and flexible flux control ability. The key is to establish the excitation field with both stator slot permanent magnets (PMs) and zero-sequence current. Two excitation sources have different pole pair numbers but share a parallel magnetic circuit and contribute to superimposed torque in this machine. Meanwhile, a flexible flux control can be achieved by regulating zero-sequence current, and little demagnetization risk exists for slot PMs during flux control. In this paper, the machine configuration and operation principle are introduced, along with its integrated ac and dc drive method. Electromagnetic performance of this new machine is evaluated by finite-element analysis. Leading design parameters are determined and optimized considering optimal injection ratio of zero-sequence current. In order to improve the performance of interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) based on space voltage vector modulation schemes, this paper presents a highly accurate online method to find the proper maximum-torque-per-ampere (MTPA) angles. This algorithm fully considers the nonlinear characteristics of the d-axis inductance, q-axis inductance, and permanent magnetic flux together. Additionally, the influences of temperature are taken into account. In this paper, the proposed method injects a small virtual angle signal into the current angle mathematically to track the stator current reference angle that is close to real MTPA points. Moreover, following a theoretical analysis method, the error of the virtual signal injection method is analyzed. Then, based on the results of error analysis, this paper proposes a compensation strategy that can significantly reduce the current angle error between the tracking point and real MTPA point. In most multiobjective optimization problems of electrical machines, the weighted function method is used to convert them into single-objective optimization problems. This paper applies a kind of new multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs), called adaptive multiobjective black hole (AMOBH) algorithms, to achieve effective multiobjective optimization of a tubular coreless linear permanent magnet synchronous motor (LPMSM). To reduce the computation cost of the MOEAs, a one-layer analytical model (AM) is presented for the tubular coreless LPMSM in this paper. The accuracy of the simplified one-layer AM is verified by comparisons with multilayer AM and finite element analysis (FEA) under different structure parameters. It is found that the simplified AM has good accuracy and can decrease the computation cost significantly. AMOBH algorithm is subsequently introduced. The optimal Pareto front with regard to thrust, copper loss, and permanent magnet volume are analyzed, and more diversified optimization results are provided. The final Pareto solution can be selected directly by practical physical values according to the application requirements. This paper presents a comprehensive study on current loop auto-tuning for self-commissioning of sensorless interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) drives. Well-tuned current controllers are essential for both high-performance operation and self-commissioning procedure. However, current controller design parameters, i.e., $L_{d}$ and $L_{q}$ , are not known at the beginning of the self-commissioning procedure where their estimation also has unique challenges. For example, an initial rotor position to determine the actual d- and q-axes is not known. Also, feedback controllers cannot be used in the estimation because they are not tuned yet. As a solution, this paper proposes a method to estimate the spatial inductance map by spatially scanning the motor via sinusoidal voltage injection in a controlled manner. Then it uses the estimated inductance values to tune the current controllers. The proposed method identifies $L_{d}$ and $L_{q}$ values using open-loop voltage injection without needing actual d- and q-axis positions. The whole procedure takes around a second. Practical considerations such as an automatic selection of the injection voltage, and digital control and dead-time effects are carefully addressed. Soft robots have recently evoked extensive attention because of their abilities to work effectively in unstructured environments. As an actuation technology of soft robots, dielectric elastomers (DEs) exhibit many intriguing attributes such as large strain and high energy density. This paper presents a novel, DE-based, soft crawling robot inspired by inchworms. The kinematics of the soft crawling robot is explored, and a data-driven model is developed to facilitate the controller design. The overall controller incorporates a feedforward controller, a feedback controller, and a disturbance observer (DOB). The feedback controller and the DOB will compensate the disturbance and model uncertainties resulting from the obtained dynamic model and ensure robust performance of the robot under different conditions.
