The IEEE World Forum on the Internet of Things (WFIoT2021) seeks submissions and proposals for original technical papers that address the Internet of Things (IoT), its theoretical and technological building blocks, the applications that drive the growth and evolution of IoT, operational considerations, experimentation, experiences from deployments, and the impacts of IoT on consumers, the public sector, and industrial verticals. The theme for the World Forum is “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on IoT”. The fifth generation (5G) of cellular networks has ambitious targets of data rate, end-toend latency, and connection reliability. With the recent spreading of information and communication technology (ICT) into healthcare, leading to an Internet of medical things, new e-health services are being offered, in particular to the elderly population who needs daily assistance. This paper aims at identifying the most representative healthcare scenarios that can benefit from 5G networks and synthesizing the communications requirements in these particular scenarios. The impact of three key 5G technologies, i.e., medical network slices, mobile edge computing, and the management of heterogeneous networks, will be discussed in the representative case study of the connected ambulance. Wireless communications is one of the most successful technologies in modern years, given that an exponential growth rate in wireless traffic has been sustained for over a century (known as Cooper?s law). This trend will certainly continue, driven by new innovative applications; for example, augmented reality and the Internet of Things. Massive MIMO has been identified as a key technology to handle orders of magnitude more data traffic. Despite the attention it is receiving from the communication community, we have personally witnessed that Massive MIMO is subject to several widespread misunderstandings, as epitomized by following (fictional) abstract: ?The Massive MIMO technology uses a nearly infinite number of high-quality antennas at the base stations. By having at least an order of magnitude more antennas than active terminals, one can exploit asymptotic behaviors that some special kinds of wireless channels have. This technology looks great at first sight, but unfortunately the signal processing complexity is off the charts and the antenna arrays would be so huge that it can only be implemented in millimeter-wave bands.? These statements are, in fact, completely false. In this overview article, we identify 10 myths and explain why they are not true. We also ask a question that is critical for the practical adoption of the technology and which will require intense future research activities to answer properly. The twelve articles in this special section focus on energy efficiency as it relates to fog or edge computing. The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as one of the most advanced and complex technological trends, where more than 50 billion things will be connected (e.g., mobile devices, sensors, wearable devices, and other computing nodes) to the Internet by 2020. Edge/fog computing will play an increasingly important role in handling the information flow of such large and complex networks. An unintended consequence is the impact of their operations on carbon emissions and the resulting electricity costs. Thus, there has been focus on designing energy-efficient solutions for the edge-fog environment. The Internet of Things (IoT) has become an important research topic in the last decade, where things refer to interconnected machines and objects with embedded computing capabilities employed to extend the Internet to many application domains. While research and development continue for general IoT devices, there are many application domains where very tiny, concealable, and non-intrusive Things are needed. The properties of recently studied nanomaterials, such as graphene, have inspired the concept of Internet of NanoThings (IoNT), based on the interconnection of nanoscale devices. Despite being an enabler for many applications, the artificial nature of IoNT devices can be detrimental where the deployment of NanoThings could result in unwanted effects on health or pollution. The novel paradigm of the Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) is introduced in this paper by stemming from synthetic biology and nanotechnology tools that allow the engineering of biological embedded computing devices. Based on biological cells, and their functionalities in the biochemical domain, Bio-NanoThings promise to enable applications such as intra-body sensing and actuation networks, and environmental control of toxic agents and pollution. The IoBNT stands as a paradigm-shifting concept for communication and network engineering, where novel challenges are faced to develop efficient and safe techniques for the exchange of information, interaction, and networking within the biochemical domain, while enabling an interface to the electrical domain of the Internet. Known for its high concentration of technology startups and corporations, the conference?s organizing committee combined the talents of thousands of industry professionals to ensure an enriching experience for both practitioners and academia. One of the fascinating aspects of modern communications is how it is interwoven into every new advance in technology. In fact, it is difficult to find a new technology, renewable power generation, unmanned aerial vehicles, etc., that does not feature wireless communications in some form. The Internet of Things would not be possible without mobile networks. This is driving an explosion of interest in the edge of the network. What used to be regarded as "the last mile" and merely an obstacle to be overcome before the resources of the central core could be made available to the users and consumers at the edges, is now starting to play a much more prominent role in those same services. An interesting evolution in the network is the confluence of complex algorithms with the evolving dynamic nature of mobile communications. When computational resources were centralized, it was only necessary to determine how best to channel these resources to their users, a comparatively simple problem. Further, when the bulk of the network was static, the routing problem was comparatively constrained. While not by any means simple, as long as the networks and computational resources were relatively static, the algorithms were also fairly straightforward. However, over the past few years the computational and communications horsepower in the edge devices is becoming significant. It is now possible for edge devices to minimize their communication bandwidth utilization by taking on more of the computational load; further, they can reduce the communication load on the core by intercommunicating among themselves. However, this clearly leads to far more complex routing, control, and computational algorithms required to keep the whole ensemble running while everything is changing under them. The manufacturing industry is at the edge of the fourth industrial revolution, a paradigm of integrated architectures in which the entire production chain (composed of machines, workers, and products) is intrinsically connected. Wireless technologies can add further value in this manufacturing revolution. However, we identify some signs which indicate that wireless technology could be left out of the next generation of smart factory equipment. This is particularly relevant considering that the heavy machinery characteristic of this sector can last for decades. We argue that at the core of this issue there is a mismatch between industrial needs and the interests of academic and partly academic sectors (e.g., standardization bodies). We base our claims on surveys from renowned advisory firms and interviews with industrial actors, which we contrast with results from content analysis of scientific articles. Finally, we propose some convergence paths that, while still retaining the degree of novelty required for academic purposes, are more aligned with industrial concerns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cyber-physical production system (CPPS), which combines information communication technology, cyberspace virtual technology, and intelligent equipment technology, is accelerating the path of Industry 4.0 to transform manufacturing from traditional to intelligent. The Industrial Internet of Things integrates the key technologies of industrial communication, computing, and control, and is providing a new way for a wide range of manufacturing resources to optimize management and dynamic scheduling. In this article, OLE for process control technology, software defined industrial network, and device-to-device communication technology are proposed to achieve efficient dynamic resource interaction. Additionally, the integration of ontology modeling with multiagent technology is introduced to achieve dynamic management of resources. We propose a load balancing mechanism based on Jena reasoning and Contract-Net Protocol technology that focuses on intelligent equipment in the smart factory. Dynamic resources management for IoT-based manufacturing provides a solution for complex resource allocation problems in current manufacturing scenarios, and provides a technical reference point for the implementation of intelligent manufacturing in Industry 4.0. We propose the TelcoFog architecture as a novel, secure, highly distributed, and ultra-dense fog computing infrastructure, which can be allocated at the extreme edge of a wired/wireless network for a telecom operator to provide multiple unified, cost-effective, and new 5G services, such as NFV, MEC, and services for third parties (e.g., smart cities, vertical industries, and IoT). The distributed and programmable fog technologies that are proposed in TelcoFog are expected to strengthen the position of the mobile network and cloud markets. TelcoFog, by design, is capable of integrating an ecosystem for network operators willing to provide NFV, MEC, and IoT services. TelcoFog's key benefits are the dynamic deployment of new distributed low-latency services. The novel TelcoFog architecture consists of three main building blocks: a scalable TelcoFog node, which is seamlessly integrated in the telecom infrastructure; a TelcoFog controller, focused on service assurance and based on service data modeling using YANG, which is integrated in the management and orchestration architecture of the telecom operator; and TelcoFog services, which are able to run on top of the TelcoFog and telecom infrastructure. To address the challenge of more spectrum for IoT connectivity, this article proposes an SA framework with rotating radars. The proposed framework is based on the results of our measurement campaign in which we measured spectrum usage patterns and signal characteristics of three different ground-based fixed rotating radar systems near Oulu, Finland. In our work, we review different IoT protocols and their use of licensed or unlicensed spectrum. We make the case that IoT systems generate much data that cannot be accommodated with licensed/unlicensed spectrum, which already suffer from congestion. We identify the suitability of shared access between different rotating radars and IoT networks. We then present a zone-based SA framework in rotating radar spectrum for the operators providing IoT services, highlight its benefits, and also specify challenges in its implementation. To fully develop the considered zone-based SA method that ensures coexistence of IoT devices with no harmful interference to the rotating radars, we propose an REM-enabled architecture for the SA. The proposed architecture provides principles and rules for using the SA for the IoT, and it does not require modifications in the incumbent radar systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The availability of low-cost general-purpose processing and storage systems with sensing/actuation capabilities coupled with communication capabilities are broadening the possibilities of IoT, leading to open systems that will be highly programmable and virtualized, and will support large numbers of application programming interfaces (APIs). IoT emerges as a set of integrated technologies ? new, exciting solutions and services that are set to change the way people live and produce goods. The future development of the railway is highly desired to evolve into a new era where infrastructure, trains, travelers, and goods will be increasingly interconnected to provide high comfort, with optimized door-to-door mobility at higher safety. For this vision, it is required to realize seamless high data rate wireless connectivity for railways. To improve the safety and comfort of future railways, wireless communications for railways are required to evolve from only voice and traditional train control signaling services to various high data rate services including critical high-definition (HD) video and other more bandwidth-intensive passenger services, such as onboard and wayside HD video surveillance, onboard real-time high data rate services, train multimedia dispatching video streaming, railway mobile ticketing, and the Internet of Things for railways. Corresponding mobile communications network architecture under various railway scenarios including inter-car, intra-car, inside station, train-to-infrastructure and infrastructure- to-infrastructure are proposed in this article. Wireless coverage based on massive MIMO for railway stations and train cars is proposed to fulfill the requirement of high-data-rate and high spectrum efficiency. The work aims to improve the stability of wireless energy transfer (WET) in the Internet of Things (IoT), prolong the service life of wireless devices, and promote green communication. Based on a digital twins (DTs) IoT environment, we depict how to optimize the energy efficiency of large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under WET technology. The large-scale distributed antenna array is applied to the wireless sensor network. MIMO can produce extremely narrow beams so that the system reduces interference to other users. Our MIMO system's energy efficiency optimization uses fractional planning and the block coordinate descent algorithm. The simulation results show that the algorithm has the best throughput performance when the maximum transmission power reaches 19 dBm. The total energy consumption of the proposed resource allocation algorithm is only about 9 percent higher than that of the power minimization algorithm. In the case of different maximum transfer powers, the number of iterations in which the proposed algorithm is required to converge is within four. Changes in the number of users cannot affect the convergence performance of the proposed algorithm. After the antenna selection mechanism is introduced, the average power of the energy received by the user is improved notably compared to the case of simply using the largescale distributed antenna array. Recently, the Industrial Internet of Things plays a vital role in the new round of technology innovation and industry competition, where the identity resolution system is its key component. However, there are some problems in the existing Handle-based identity resolution architecture. Therefore, a trusted identifier co-governance architecture is proposed, and a prototype system is designed and implemented in this article. Specifically, we design a blockchain-based decentralized framework for identifier service, identifier life cycle management based on smart contract, and a data storage mechanism for a trusted identifier. The whole architecture could solve the problems of single point of failure, data tampering, and governance deviation, and reduce the trust cost in the process of data circulation. Both the military R&D and operational communities have recognized the growing complexity of the operational environment. Envisioned as a highly interconnected and networked space, technology faces unique challenges in order for militaries to effectively operate in these conditions. Understanding how these interconnected systems and networks will operate in complex information environments is a significant challenge. In order to address these challenges, we must further our understanding of advanced systems such as unmanned systems and the internet- of-things. We also recognize the necessity to maintain security of these systems and the information these systems are gathering, storing and transmitting. With the development of these systems, these approaches must be tested and verified in emulation and simulation environments. Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms are purely data-driven and do not leverage any domain knowledge about the nature of the available actions, the system's state transition dynamics, and its cost/reward function. This severely penalizes their ability to meet critical requirements of emerging wireless applications, due to the inefficiency with which these algorithms learn from their interactions with the environment. In this article, we describe how data-driven RL algorithms can be improved by systematically integrating basic system models into the learning process. Our proposed approach uses real-time data in conjunction with knowledge about the underlying communication system to achieve orders of magnitude improvement in key performance metrics, such as convergence speed and compute/memory complexity, relative to well-established RL benchmarks. Broader applications of the Internet of Things (loT) are expected in the forthcoming 6G system, although massive loT is already a key scenario in 5G, predominantly relying on physical layer solutions inherited from 4G LTE and primarily using orthogonal multiple access (OMA). In 6G loT, supporting a massive number of connections will be required for diverse services of the vertical sectors, prompting fundamental studies on how to improve the spectral efficiency of the system. One of the key enabling technologies is non-or-thogonal multiple access (NOMA). This article consists of two parts. In the first part, finite block length theory and the diversity order of multi-user systems are used to show the significant potential of NOMA compared to traditional OMA. The supremacy of NOMA over OMA is particularly pronounced for asynchronous contention-based systems relying on imperfect link adaptation, which are commonly assumed for massive loT systems. To approach these performance bounds, in the second part of the article, several promising technology directions are proposed for 6G massive loT, including linear spreading, joint spreading and modulation, multi-user channel coding in the context of various techniques for practical uncoordinated transmissions, cell-free operations, and so on, from the perspective of NOMA. The articles in this special section focus on crowd management in areas that are increasingly experiencing growths in populations. In its 2018 Revision of the World Urbanization Prospects, the United Nations projects that 68 percent of the world's population is expected to be living in urban spaces by 2050, compared to the current 54 percent and 30 percent in 1950. The main drive for urbanization has been economic, with the general population seeking better employment opportunities accompanied by improved lifestyles. Such increased urbanization rates put significant pressure on city infrastructure networks and challenges existing methods for various aspects of governance, including crowd and traffic management. In particular, phenomena such as rush hours and special events carry significant challenges and risks. Environmental impacts due to massive urbanization are also on the rise. These and other indicators call for new management mechanisms for crowds, especially those exploiting recent advances in technology, e.g., the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data. Low-power wide area networks (LPWANs) are emerging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that support smart city development. An individual application inherits distinct features that demand different characteristics of LPWANs. For instance, various applications demand different data rates or tolerate different packet drop rates. As such, quantified performance of the LPWAN will help developers to make decisions on classes and types of LPWAN to be used. Previous works only provided qualitative comparisons on LPWANs. Thus, smart application developers are still facing the challenge of inappropriately adopting LPWAN technologies. Currently, the IEEE Standard Working Group P2668 is working on developing a standard to evaluate, grade, and rank the performance of IoT objects by using indicator values referred to as IoT Index (IDex). To achieve smart selection on LPWANs, the IEEE P2668 IDex Working Group has first focused on the evaluation of LPWANs and developed a novel LPWAN-I. The proposed LPWAN-I is a sub-index of the IDex that quantitatively evaluates the applicability of LPWANs and selects the most suitable LPWAN candidate for a specific application. Novel sensing and communication techniques have accelerated the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) with the manufacturing industry. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) today requires more agile and unobtrusive sensing and communication to observe the underlying industrial resources and physical operations. Information-driven decision making in the cyber space may result in collaborative automation and intelligent optimization in the physical space. Therefore, a convenient information interface that could seamlessly bridge the physical world with its corresponding information system has been a critical building block for manufacturing intelligence. In this article, we advocate the integration of wireless powering, sensing, and communication, and propose radio frequency identification (RFID) and sensing (RFID&S) techniques to enhance the efficiency and convenience of data collection and integration for IIoT innovations. We first provide the fundamentals of RFID&S including radio frequency energy harvesting and communication interface. Then we present a novel UHF-HF dual-mode RFID sensor scheme with implementations using commercial off-the-shelf components for the first time, and also illustrate the establishment of RFID&S-based industrial monitoring and data integration systems. Finally, the advantages of RFID&S in unobtrusive online sensing, and its capability of extending the information link for IIoT applications are elaborated. An exemplary use case of the proposed RFID&S techniques is provided to suggest its potential applications and show its adaptation to industrial process control and integration. As we enter the much-awaited year 2020, it is essential to understand the impact that the emerging IoT technologies will have across various industrial sectors and throughout the broader society. According to Gartner, there will be over 20 billion connected devices in 2020, while IDC forecasts expect this number to at least double by the year 2025. This increasingly global and autonomous IoT ecosystem has already demonstrated potential in revolutionizing business operations and consumer products. Future emerging communication technologies are anticipated to fold into our surroundings, helping us get our noses off the smartphone screens and back into our environments. In doing so, they make us more (rather than less) present in the world around us. While 5G was supposed to be about the Internet of Everything, to be transformative 6G might be just about the opposite of Everything, that is, Nothing or, more technically, No Things. Building on the invisible-to-visible technology concept, this article explores how the full potential of multisensory extended reality (XR) experiences may be unleashed in Multiverse cross-reality environments. We exploit the convergence of artificial-intelligence-enhanced multi-access edge computing, intelligent mobile robots, and blockchain technologies to help realize the Internet of No Things as an important stepping stone toward ushering in the 6G post-smartphone era. In our experiments, we consider locally connected human-avatar/robot collectives and investigate our proposed extrasensory perception network, which integrates the three evolutionary mobile computing stages of ubiquitous, pervasive, and persuasive computing. As an illustrative example of advanced XR experiences, we study the delivery of sixth-sense perceptions that transverse the boundary between Multiverse realms in order to mimic the quantum realm. Recent years have witnessed a rapid proliferation of smart Internet of Things (IoT) devices. IoT devices with intelligence require the use of effective machine learning paradigms. Federated learning can be a promising solution for enabling IoT-based smart applications. In this article, we present the primary design aspects for enabling federated learning at the network edge. We model the incentive- based interaction between a global server and participating devices for federated learning via a Stackelberg game to motivate the participation of the devices in the federated learning process. An important task in the Internet of Things (IoT) is field monitoring, where multiple IoT nodes take measurements and communicate them to the base station or the cloud for processing, inference, and analysis. When the measurements are high-dimensional (e.g., videos or time-series data), IoT networks with limited bandwidth and low-power devices may not be able to support such frequent transmissions with high data rates. To ensure communication efficiency, this article proposes to model the measurement compression at IoT nodes and the inference at the base station or cloud as a deep neural network (DNN). We propose a new framework where the data to be transmitted from nodes are the intermediate outputs of a layer of the DNN. We show how to learn the model parameters of the DNN and study the trade-off between the communication rate and the inference accuracy. The experimental results show that we can save approximately 96 percent transmissions with only a degradation of 2.5 percent in inference accuracy, which shows the potentiality to enable many new IoT data analysis applications that generate a large amount of measurements. The Internet of Things connects a large number of smart mobile devices with the Internet, where these devices are embedded with often limited communication, computation, and caching resources. To address the heterogeneity of these devices and achieve efficient overall system resource utilization, researchers have proposed various device-to-device resource sharing models, enabling mobile devices to form device-todevice connections and to share their resources for cooperative task execution. Most of these existing works, however, considered scenarios where mobile devices can share one or two types of resources, and hence inadequately explore the potential of resource sharing among mobile devices. In this article, we introduce a general framework where mobile devices can share any combination of the three types of resources, and it can generalize many existing deviceto- device resource sharing models. In addition, it can achieve more efficient resource allocation by offering mobile devices more flexibility in terms of resource sharing. Based on the proposed framework, we focus on discussing two issues: the optimization issue, regarding how to schedule resources among devices; and the economic issue, regarding how to motivate the device owners to share their resources. We introduce the challenges and potential solutions to these two issues. We further outline several open issues and future directions for the proposed general resource sharing framework. MCC is essential for public safety, service efficiency improvement, and economic growth sustainability. MCC services demand an extremely fast response rate. On the other hand, the tremendous growth of IoT and AI are vital elements to allow MCC developments to flourish. In this article, CIoT is newly defined to include standards and facilitate emerging IoT solutions to be adopted for critical services. The service reliability in CIoT embraces IoT and AI, and measures resilience and availability of automation. Two important IoT standards, namely IEEE 1451 and IEEE P2668, are incorporated to standardize the performance of smart transducers and facilitate the evaluation of IoT maturity, respectively. In addition, an interworking solution of CIoT is designed to establish a heterogeneous network that comprises multiple IoT networks, such as 5G and LPWANs. The interworking solution renders the CIoT "smart" and enhances service resilience. Attention is drawn to the fact that most emerging IoT protocols do not comply with the low-latency requirement of MCC. In this article, a communication prioritization scheme incorporating CL and SL is proposed to overcome the highlighted challenge. Exploiting light beams to carry information and deliver power is suggested as a potential technology to recharge batteries in future generations of IoT and IoUT devices while providing optical connectivity. SLIPT has been recently proposed as an efficient method of wireless power transfer between communicating terminals. In this article, we provide an overview of the various SLIPT techniques in the time, power, and space domains. In this article, we provide an accessible introduction to the emerging idea of Age of Information (AoI) that quantifies freshness of information and explore its possible role in the efficient design of freshness-aware Internet of Things (IoT). We start by summarizing the concept of AoI and its variants with emphasis on the differences between AoI and other well-known performance metrics in the literature, such as throughput and delay. Building on this, we explore freshness-aware IoT design for a network in which IoT devices sense potentially different physical processes and are supposed to frequently update the status of these processes at a destination node (e.g., a cellular base station). Inspired by recent interest, we also assume that these IoT devices are powered by wireless energy transfer by the destination node. For this setting, we investigate the optimal sampling policy that jointly optimizes wireless energy transfer and scheduling of update packet transmissions from IoT devices with the goal of minimizing long-term weighted sum-AoI. Using this, we characterize the achievable AoI region. We also compare this AoI-optimal policy with the one that maximizes average throughput (throughput-optimal policy), and demonstrate the impact of system state on their structures.
