This Series presents selected papers from the ITU Kaleidoscope Academic Conference that convened in Kyoto, Japan from the 22nd to 24th of April 2013. The topic of the conference was "Building Sustainable Communities," in recognition of the challenges that Japan is facing after the Great East Earthquake. The hosts were the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication (MIC) of Japan and Kyoto University. The article presents a technical report on the 12th International Conference on Software, Telecommunications, and Computer Networks (SoftCOM 2004), which was held during October 10-13, 2004 on the cruise ship Marko Polo on the attractive route Split-Dubrovnik-Split-Venice-Split. The conference program featured a symposium dedicated to the most timely topics in the area of mobile and wireless communications. Two special sessions and 17 general conference sessions, a poster session, and two professional workshops were held too. Researchers and experts from industry, research institutes, and universities from more than 40 countries all around the world submitted in total 203 papers for presentation at Soft- COM 2004. Submitted papers were reviewed by more than 100 scientists from universities, institutes, and companies all over the world. All accepted papers were carefully selected based on their contribution, relevance, conceptual clarity, and overall quality. Nearly 69 percent of submitted papers were recommended for presentation within the technical program.

The article gives information about the Second IEEE Andean Regional Conference, which was held in Bogotá, Colombia during 10-13 August 2004. It was successfully accomplished by the interchange and discussion of advances and developments in the fields of electronics, bioengineering, telecommunications, computing and electric power technologies, among professionals, industrials, business leaders, and researchers from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. The article focuses on the Ninth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications, which was held in Alexandria, Egypt, from June 28 to July 1, 2004. The technical program committee ensured that only the highest quality papers were accepted for presentation and publication in conference proceedings. The keynote speaker was Dr. Asimakis Kokkos who discussed topic concerning the operator-revenue-and-cost models, and its causes and trends.

The author describes his growing involvement in Communications Society activities that had significant impact on his career. He describes his experience in presenting a paper at the 1982 IEEE International Conference on Communications in Philadelphia on the topic of how the Bell System would maintain its digital telecommunications network, which was then in its infancy. The Communications Society Board of Governors' recognition of the growing opportunities and challenges of conferences when it restructured the Board, with the new structure starting in 2008 is discussed.

In January, 2004 Communications Society's first IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (CCNC '04), took place in Nevada. By all measures the venue was a complete success. CCNC '04 attracted over 340 registrants to hear 12 technical papers and 35 poster presentations, see 20 technical demos and experience eight panels including one Distinguished Expert Panel. And those presenting their work came from 31 countries. To help make the program possible, 17 volunteers served on the Organizing and Steering Committees, 64 on the Technical Program Committee, and 120 received submissions. By society norms, of the approximately 50 meetings and conferences sponsored by the society each year, CCNC is not the largest, and there are quite a few that are smaller, especially their more intimate workshops. If the CCNC statistics for volunteer support is to be considered and scaled to encompass all such conferences, the number become very impressive. Furthermore, like the proverbial iceberg where so much is not visible to the casual viewer, this count does not include the many volunteers who are busily engaged in facilitating the society's educational programs and noteworthy publications.

This article focuses on OFC/NFOEC conference that took place on 6-9 March at the Anaheim Convention Center, California. The first combined OFC/NFOEC conference opened with great success with strong technical sessions and a crowded exhibition. There were 13,111 registrants strong, 3500 of whom were international and 12 percent of whom were from Asia. More than 750 papers were presented, many of which focused on the industry's hottest topics including fiber to the premises (FTTP) and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs). Special industry sessions, like the Service Provider Summit and Market Watch, showcased the newest information and projections in the field and delivered messages to standing room only audiences. At the crowded exhibition of OFC/NFOEC 2005 new products were presented and corporate announcements were made.

From May 14-15, 2004, Cal Poly Pomona's IEEE Communications Society Student Branch held its Fourth Annual Wireless Telecommunications Symposium. The symposium was a very successful event, attracting close to 200 attendees representing 11 countries. Twenty four papers were accepted.
