An early detection tool for latent COVID-19 infections in oncology staff and patients is essential to prevent outbreaks in a cancer center. (1) Background: In this study, we developed and implemented two early detection tools for the radiotherapy area to identify COVID-19 cases opportunely. (2) Methods: Staff and patients answered a questionnaire (electronic and paper surveys, respectively) with clinical and epidemiological information. The data were collected through two online survey tools: Real-Time Tracking (R-Track) and Summary of Factors (S-Facts). Cut-off values were established according to the algorithm models. SARS-CoV-2 qRT-PCR tests confirmed the positive algorithms individuals. (3) Results: Oncology staff members (n = 142) were tested, and 14% (n = 20) were positives for the R-Track algorithm; 75% (n = 15) were qRT-PCR positive. The S-Facts Algorithm identified 7.75% (n = 11) positive oncology staff members, and 81.82% (n = 9) were qRT-PCR positive. Oncology patients (n = 369) were evaluated, and 1.36% (n = 5) were positive for the Algorithm used. The five patients (100%) were confirmed by qRT-PCR. (4) Conclusions: The proposed early detection tools have proved to be a low-cost and efficient tool in a country where qRT-PCR tests and vaccines are insufficient for the population. Sleep monitoring has become a prevalent area of research where body position and physiological data, such as heart rate and respiratory rate, are monitored. Numerous critical health problems are associated with poor sleep, such as pressure sore development, sleep disorders, and low sleep quality, which can lead to an increased risk of falls, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. Current monitoring systems can be costly, laborious, and taxing on hospital resources. This paper reviews the most recent solutions for contactless textile technology in the form of bed sheets or mats to monitor body positions, vital signs, and sleep, both commercially and in the literature. This paper is organized into four categories: body position and movement monitoring, physiological monitoring, sleep monitoring, and commercial products. A detailed performance evaluation was carried out, considering the detection accuracy as well as the sensor types and algorithms used. Due to the increasing cost of health insurance, for decades, many countries have endeavored to constrain the cost of insurance by utilizing a DRG payment system. In most cases, under the DRG payment system, hospitals cannot exactly know which DRG code inpatients are until they are discharged. This paper focuses on the prediction of what DRG code appendectomy patients will be classified with when they are admitted to hospital. We utilize two models (or classifiers) constructed using the C4.5 algorithm and back-propagation neural network (BPN). We conducted experiments with the data collected from two hospitals. The results show that the accuracies of these two classification models can be up to 97.84% and 98.70%, respectively. According to the predicted DRG code, hospitals can effectively arrange medical resources with certainty, then, in turn, improve the quality of the medical care patients receive. (1) Background: The nursing of the elderly has received more and more attention, especially the nursing of urination and defecation for the elderly. (2) Purpose: Design an excretion nursing equipment that can accurately identify and deal with urine and stool. (3) Methods: In this paper, based on the analysis of the requirements of excretion nursing equipment, a split mechanical design method and a modular control method are used to design the equipment. The Dempster–Shafer (D-S) evidence theory is used in the identification of urine and stool. (4) Results: The excretion nursing equipment designed in this paper works well according to functional test, and the success rate of stool and urine identification method using D-S evidence theory is 20% higher than that of traditional methods, reaching 90%. (5) Conclusions: The urine and stool recognition and detection algorithm based on the D-S evidence theory used in this paper can improve the recognition accuracy of traditional detection methods, and the designed excretion nursing equipment can realize the function of excretion care for patients. The distinctive criteria employed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGSOP) for diagnosing sarcopenia are examined, emphasizing potential obstacles in comparing research results across studies. The paper delves into the use of machine learning techniques in sarcopenia detection and diagnosis, noting challenges such as data accessibility, data imbalance, and feature selection. It suggests that wearable devices, like activity trackers and smartwatches, could offer valuable insights into sarcopenia progression and aid individuals in monitoring and managing their condition. (1) Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated disease that negatively impacts patients' quality of life and predisposes them to cardiovascular or metabolic diseases. This paper aims to summarize the knowledge structure and future directions in psoriasis research by means of bibliometrics. (2) Material and methods: The Thomson Reuters Web of Science database was interrogated using preestablished keywords. A list of the top 100 most cited articles focusing solely on psoriasis was compiled and analyzed. VOSviewer software was used to assess and visualize collaboration networks, citation, co-citation and co-wording analysis, and bibliographic coupling. (3) Results: The articles were written by 902 authors from 20 countries and were published in 31 journals. The United States was at the forefront of this field. Griffiths, CEM had the most citations, while the most prolific institution was Rockefeller University, New York City. Pathogenesis, especially key-pathogenic factors, immune pathways, and epidemiology were the most discussed topics. Work published in the last decade focused on the use of biologics. Keywords such as "quality of life", "efficacy", and "necrosis-factor alpha" have been widely used. We used quantitative text analysis to examine conversations in a series of online support groups attended by care partners of people living with rare dementias (PLWRD). We used transcripts of 14 sessions (>100,000 words) to explore patterns of communication in trained facilitators' (n = 2) and participants' (n = 11) speech and to investigate the impact of session agenda on language use. We investigated the features of their communication via Poisson regression and a clustering algorithm. We also compared their speech with a natural speech corpus. We found that differences to natural speech emerged, notably in emotional tone (d = −3.2, p < 0.001) and cognitive processes (d = 2.8, p < 0.001). We observed further differences between facilitators and participants and between sessions based on agenda. The clustering algorithm categorised participants' contributions into three groups: sharing experience, self-reflection, and group processes. We discuss the findings in the context of Social Comparison Theory. We argue that dedicated online spaces have a positive impact on care partners in combatting isolation and stress via affiliation with peers. We then discuss the linguistic mechanisms by which social support was experienced in the group. In recent times, there has been considerable focus on harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) for medical image analysis and healthcare purposes. In this study, we introduce CADFU (Computer-Aided Diagnosis System for Foot Ulcers), a pioneering diabetic foot ulcer diagnosis system. The primary objective of CADFU is to detect and segment ulcers and similar chronic wounds in medical images. To achieve this, we employ two distinct algorithms. Firstly, DHuNeT, an innovative Dual-Phase Hyperactive UNet, is utilized for the segmentation task. Second, we used YOLOv8 for the task of detecting wounds. The DHuNeT autoencoder, employed for the wound segmentation task, is the paper's primary and most significant contribution. DHuNeT is the combination of sequentially stacking two UNet autoencoders. The hyperactive information transmission from the first UNet to the second UNet is the key idea of DHuNeT. The first UNet feeds the second UNet the features it has learned, and the two UNets combine their learned features to create new, more accurate, and effective features. We achieve good performance measures, especially in terms of the Dice co-efficient and precision, with segmentation scores of 85% and 92.6%, respectively. We obtain a mean average precision (mAP) of 86% in the detection task. Face recognition segmentation is very important for symptom detection, especially in the case of complex image backgrounds or noise. The complexity of the photo background, the clarity of the facial expressions, or the interference of other people's faces can increase the difficulty of detection. Therefore, in this paper, we have proposed a method to combine mask region-based convolutional neural networks (Mask R-CNN) with you only look once version 4 (YOLOv4) to identify facial symptoms by this new method. We use the face image dataset from the public image databases DermNet and Freepic as the training source for the model. Face segmentation was first applied with Mask R-CNN. Then the images were imported into ResNet-101, and the facial features were fused with region of interest (RoI) in the feature pyramid networks (FPN) structures. After removing the non-face features and noise, the face region has been accurately obtained. Next, the recognized face area and RoI data were used to identify facial symptoms (acne, freckle, and wrinkles) with YOLOv4. Finally, we use Mask R-CNN, and you only look once version 3 (YOLOv3) and YOLOv4 are matched to perform the performance analysis. Although, the facial images with symptoms are relatively few. We still use a limited amount of data to train the model. The experimental results show that our proposed method still achieves 57.73%, 60.38%, and 59.75% of mean average precision (mAP) for different amounts of data. Compared with other methods, the mAP was more than about 3%. Consequently, using the method proposed in this paper, facial symptoms can be effectively and accurately identified. Tooth segmentation is an important aspect of virtual orthodontic systems. In some existing studies using deep learning-based tooth segmentation methods, the feature learning of point coordinate information and normal vector information is not effectively distinguished. This will lead to the feature information of these two methods not producing complementary intermingling. To address this problem, a tooth segmentation method based on multiple geometric feature learning is proposed in this paper. First, the spatial transformation (T-Net) module is used to complete the alignment of dental model mesh features. Second, a multiple geometric feature learning module is designed to encode and enhance the centroid coordinates and normal vectors of each triangular mesh to highlight the differences between geometric features of different meshes. Finally, for local to global fusion features, feature downscaling and channel optimization are accomplished layer by layer using multilayer perceptron (MLP) and efficient channel attention (ECA). With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of patients suffering from depression is rising around the world. It is important to diagnose depression early so that it may be treated as soon as possible. The self-response questionnaire, which has been used to diagnose depression in hospitals, is impractical since it requires active patient engagement. Therefore, it is vital to have a system that predicts depression automatically and recommends treatment. In this paper, we propose a smartphone-based depression prediction system. In addition, we propose depressive features based on multimodal sensor data for predicting depressive mood. The multimodal depressive features were designed based on depression symptoms defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The proposed system comprises a "Mental Health Protector" application that collects data from smartphones and a big data-based cloud platform that processes large amounts of data. We recruited 106 mental patients and collected smartphone sensor data and self-reported questionnaires from their smartphones using the proposed system. Finally, we evaluated the performance of the proposed system's prediction of depression. As the test dataset, 27 out of 106 participants were selected randomly. The proposed system showed 76.92% on an f1-score for 16 patients with depression disease, and in particular, 15 patients, 93.75%, were successfully predicted. Unlike previous studies, the proposed method has high adaptability in that it uses only smartphones and has a distinction of evaluating prediction accuracy based on the diagnosis. The healthcare industry is one application for data envelopment analysis (DEA) that can have significant benefits for standardizing health service delivery. This narrative review focuses on the application of DEA in emergency departments (EDs) and the management of emergency conditions such as acute ischemic stroke and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This includes benchmarking the proportion of patients that receive treatment for these emergency conditions. The most frequent primary areas of study motivating work in DEA, EDs and management of emergency conditions including acute management of stroke are sorted into five distinct clusters in this study: (1) using basic DEA models for efficiency analysis in EDs, i.e., applying variable return to scale (VRS), or constant return to scale (CRS) to ED operations; (2) combining advanced and basic DEA approaches in EDs, i.e., applying super-efficiency with basic DEA or advanced DEA approaches such as additive model (ADD) and slack-based measurement (SBM) to clarify the dynamic aspects of ED efficiency throughout the duration of a first-aid program for AMI or heart attack; (3) applying DEA time series models in EDs like the early use of thrombolysis and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in AMI treatment, and endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in acute ischemic stroke treatment, i.e., using window analysis and Malmquist productivity index (MPI) to benchmark the performance of EDs over time; (4) integrating other approaches with DEA in EDs, i.e., combining simulations, machine learning (ML), multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDM) by DEA to reduce patient waiting times, and futile transfers; and (5) applying various DEA models for the management of acute ischemic stroke, i.e., using DEA to increase the number of eligible acute ischemic stroke patients receiving EVT and other medical ischemic stroke treatment in the form of thrombolysis (alteplase and now Tenecteplase). We thoroughly assess the methodological basis of the papers, offering detailed explanations regarding the applied models, selected inputs and outputs, and all relevant methodologies. Data-driven algorithms have proven to be effective for a variety of medical tasks, including disease categorization and prediction, personalized medicine design, and imaging diagnostics. Although their performance is frequently on par with that of clinicians, their widespread use is constrained by a number of obstacles, including the requirement for high-quality data that are typical of the population, the difficulty of explaining how they operate, and ethical and regulatory concerns. The use of data augmentation and synthetic data generation methodologies, such as federated learning and explainable artificial intelligence ones, could provide a viable solution to the current issues, facilitating the widespread application of artificial intelligence algorithms in the clinical application domain and reducing the time needed for prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis by up to 70%. The Italian Government planned to invest €15 billion of European funds on National Health Service digitalization and primary care enhancement. The critical burden brought by the pandemic upon hospital care mean these investments could no longer be delayed, considering the extraordinary backlogs of many treatments and the ordinary gaps of fragmented long-term care, in Italy and abroad. National guidelines have been published to standardize interventions across the Italian regions, and telemedicine is frequently mentioned as a key innovation to achieve both goals. The professional resources needed to run the facilities introduced in primary care are defined with great precision, but no details are given on how digitalization and remote care technologies must be implemented in this context. Building on this policy case, this paper focuses on what contribution digitalization and telemedicine can offer to specific primary care innovations, drawing from implemented technology-driven policies which may support the effective stratification, prevention and management of chronic patient needs, including anticipatory healthcare, population health management, adjusted clinical groups, chronic care management, quality and outcomes frameworks, patient-reported outcomes and patient-reported experience. Disease surveillance is used to monitor ongoing control activities, detect early outbreaks, and inform intervention priorities and policies. However, data from disease surveillance that could be used to support real-time decisionmaking remain largely underutilised. Using the Brazilian Amazon malaria surveillance dataset as a case study, in this paper we explore the potential for unsupervised anomaly detection machine learning techniques to discover signals of epidemiological interest. We found that our models were able to provide an early indication of outbreak onset, outbreak peaks, and change points in the proportion of positive malaria cases. Specifically, the sustained rise in malaria in the Brazilian Amazon in 2016 was flagged by several models. We found that no single model detected all anomalies across all health regions. Because of this, we provide the minimum number of machine learning models top-k models) to maximise the number of anomalies detected across different health regions. We discovered that the top three models that maximise the coverage of the number and types of anomalies detected across the thirteen health regions are principal component analysis, stochastic outlier selection, and the minimum covariance determinant. Anomaly detection is a potentially valuable approach to discovering patterns of epidemiological importance when confronted with a large volume of data across space and time. Our exploratory approach can be replicated for other diseases and locations to inform monitoring, timely interventions, and actions towards the goal of controlling endemic disease. Since the onset of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19 pandemic, concern arose for those who might be at higher risk of a worse COVID-19 prognosis, such as those with cystic fibrosis (CF). In this context, we evaluated the features of hospitalized patients with CF due to severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in Brazil and we also performed a systematic review including all the studies published from the beginning of the first case of COVID-19 (17 November 2019) to the date of this search (23 May 2022) which included, concomitantly, patients with CF and COVID-19 in the worldwide population. In our Brazilian data, we evaluated the period from December 2019 to March 2022, and we included 33 demographical and clinical patients' features. We classified the patients into groups: (G1) SARI due to another viral infection than severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (23; 5.4%), (G2) SARI due to an unknown etiological agent (286; 67.1%), and (G3) SARI due to SARS-CoV-2 infection (117; 27.5%). The individuals in G3 tended to be older, especially over 50 years old, and presented a higher prevalence of dyspnea, peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) <95%, and cardiopathy. The highest prevalence for intensive care unit (ICU) treatment (52; 44.4%) and invasive mechanical ventilation (29; 24.8%) was for patients in G3. Almost half of the patients in G3 died (51; 43.6%); in contrast, none in G1 died. However, we observed 43 (15.0%) deaths in G2. In addition, 12 (4.2%) and one (0.9%) death not associated with SARI occurred, respectively, in the G2 and G3. The patients who died due to SARS-CoV-2 infection had a higher frequency of SpO2 <95% (46; 90.2%), ICU treatment (34; 66.7%), and invasive mechanical ventilation (27; 52.9%) when compared to those who recovered. The systematic review comprised a total of 31 papers published as observational studies. These studies comprised 661,386 patients in total, including children, adults, and elderly age groups. However, only 19,150 (2.9%) patients were diagnosed with CF and, from these patients, 2523 (0.4%) were diagnosed with both CF and COVID-19. It was observed that the most common outcome was the need for hospitalization (n = 322 patients with CF), and the need for oxygen support (n = 139 patients with CF). One hundred patients with CF needed intensive care units, fifty patients needed non-invasive mechanical ventilation support, and only three patients were described as receiving invasive mechanical ventilation support. Deaths were described in 38 patients with CF. Importantly, lung-transplanted patients with CF represented an increased risk of death in one publication; in accordance, another study described that lung transplantation and moderate to severe lung disease were independent risk factors for severe outcomes after SARS-CoV-2 infection. In contrast with the literature, in conclusion, Brazilian patients in G3 presented a severe phenotype, even though most of the other studies did not observe worse outcomes in patients with CF and COVID-19. Effective personnel scheduling is crucial for organizations to match workload demands. However, staff scheduling is sometimes affected by unexpected events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, that disrupt regular operations. Limiting the number of on-site staff in the workplace together with regular testing is an effective strategy to minimize the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19 because they spread mostly through close contact with people. Therefore, choosing the best scheduling and testing plan that satisfies the goals of the organization and prevents the virus's spread is essential during disease outbreaks. In this paper, we formulate these challenges in the framework of two Mixed Integer Non-linear Programming (MINLP) models. The first model aims to derive optimal staff occupancy and testing strategies to minimize the risk of infection among employees, while the second is aimed only at optimal staff occupancy under a random testing strategy. To solve the problems expressed in the models, we propose a canonical genetic algorithm as well as two commercial solvers. Using both real and synthetic contact networks of employees, our results show that following the recommended occupancy and testing strategy reduces the risk of infection 25–60% under different scenarios. The minimum risk of infection can be achieved when the employees follow a planned testing strategy. Postpartum anemia is a very common maternal health problem and remains a persistent public health issue globally. It negatively affects maternal mood and could lead to depression, increased fatigue, and decreased cognitive abilities. It can and should be treated by restoring iron stores. However, in most health systems, there is typically a six-week gap between birth and the follow-up postpartum visit. Risks of postpartum maternal complications are usually assessed shortly after birth by clinicians intuitively, taking into account psychosocial and physical factors, such as the presence of anemia and the type of iron supplementation. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using machine-learning algorithms to more reliably forecast three parameters related to patient wellbeing, namely depression (measured by Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale—EPDS), overall tiredness, and physical tiredness (both measured by Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory—MFI). Data from 261 patients were used to train the forecasting models for each of the three parameters, and they outperformed the baseline models that always predicted the mean values of the training data. The mean average error of the elastic net regression model for predicting the EPDS score (with values ranging from 0 to 19) was 2.3 and outperformed the baseline, which already hints at the clinical usefulness of using such a model. We further investigated what features are the most important for this prediction, where the EDPS score and both tiredness indexes at birth turned out to be by far the most prominent prediction features. Our study indicates that the machine-learning model approach has the potential for use in clinical practice to predict the onset of depression and severe fatigue in anemic patients postpartum and potentially improve the detection and management of postpartum depression and fatigue. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological condition that is chronic and worsens over time, which presents a challenging diagnosis. An accurate diagnosis is required to recognize PD patients from healthy individuals. Diagnosing PD at early stages can reduce the severity of this disorder and improve the patient's living conditions. Algorithms based on associative memory (AM) have been applied in PD diagnosis using voice samples of patients with this health condition. Even though AM models have achieved competitive results in PD classification, they do not have any embedded component in the AM model that can identify and remove irrelevant features, which would consequently improve the classification performance. In this paper, we present an improvement to the smallest normalized difference associative memory (SNDAM) algorithm by means of a learning reinforcement phase that improves classification performance of SNDAM when it is applied to PD diagnosis. For the experimental phase, two datasets that have been widely applied for PD diagnosis were used. Both datasets were gathered from voice samples from healthy people and from patients who suffer from this condition at an early stage of PD. These datasets are publicly accessible in the UCI Machine Learning Repository. The efficiency of the ISNDAM model was contrasted with that of seventy other models implemented in the WEKA workbench and was compared to the performance of previous studies. A statistical significance analysis was performed to verify that the performance differences between the compared models were statistically significant. The experimental findings allow us to affirm that the proposed improvement in the SNDAM algorithm, called ISNDAM, effectively increases the classification performance compared against well-known algorithms. ISNDAM achieves a classification accuracy of 99.48%, followed by ANN Levenberg–Marquardt with 95.89% and SVM RBF kernel with 88.21%, using Dataset 1. ISNDAM achieves a classification accuracy of 99.66%, followed by SVM IMF1 with 96.54% and RF IMF1 with 94.89%, using Dataset 2. The experimental findings show that ISNDAM achieves competitive performance on both datasets and that statistical significance tests confirm that ISNDAM delivers classification performance equivalent to that of models published in previous studies. Regarding the problem of epidemic outbreak prevention and control, infectious disease dynamics models cannot support urban managers in reducing urban-scale healthcare costs through community-scale control measures, as they usually have difficulty meeting the requirements for simulation at different scales. In this paper, we propose combining contact networks at different spatial scales to study the COVID-19 outbreak in Shanghai from March to July 2022, calculate the initial R t through the number of cases at the beginning of the outbreak, and evaluate the effectiveness of dynamic non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) adopted at different time periods in Shanghai using our proposed approach. In particular, our proposed contact network is a three-layer multi-scale network that is used to distinguish social interactions occurring in areas of different sizes, as well as to distinguish between intensive and non-intensive population contacts. This susceptible–exposure–infection–quarantine–recovery (SEIQR) epidemic model constructed based on a multi-scale network can more effectively assess the feasibility of small-scale control measures, such as assessing community quarantine measures and mobility restrictions at different moments and phases of an epidemic. Biomedical-named entity recognition (bNER) is critical in biomedical informatics. It identifies biomedical entities with special meanings, such as people, places, and organizations, as predefined semantic types in electronic health records (EHR). bNER is essential for discovering novel knowledge using computational methods and Information Technology. Early bNER systems were configured manually to include domain-specific features and rules. However, these systems were limited in handling the complexity of the biomedical text. Recent advances in deep learning (DL) have led to the development of more powerful bNER systems. DL-based bNER systems can learn the patterns of biomedical text automatically, making them more robust and efficient than traditional rule-based systems. This paper reviews the healthcare domain of bNER, using DL techniques and artificial intelligence in clinical records, for mining treatment prediction. bNER-based tools are categorized systematically and represent the distribution of input, context, and tag (encoder/decoder). Furthermore, to create a labeled dataset for our machine learning sentiment analyzer to analyze the sentiment of a set of tweets, we used a manual coding approach and the multi-task learning method to bias the training signals with domain knowledge inductively. The digitalisation of geriatric care refers to the use of emerging technologies to manage and provide person-centered care to the elderly by collecting patients' data electronically and using them to streamline the care process, which improves the overall quality, accuracy, and efficiency of healthcare. In many countries, healthcare providers still rely on the manual measurement of bioparameters, inconsistent monitoring, and paper-based care plans to manage and deliver care to elderly patients. This can lead to a number of problems, including incomplete and inaccurate record-keeping, errors, and delays in identifying and resolving health problems. The purpose of this study is to develop a geriatric care management system that combines signals from various wearable sensors, noncontact measurement devices, and image recognition techniques to monitor and detect changes in the health status of a person. The system relies on deep learning algorithms and the Internet of Things (IoT) to identify the patient and their six most pertinent poses. In addition, the algorithm has been developed to monitor changes in the patient's position over a longer period of time, which could be important for detecting health problems in a timely manner and taking appropriate measures. Finally, based on expert knowledge and a priori rules integrated in a decision tree-based model, the automated final decision on the status of nursing care plan is generated to support nursing staff. Glucose forecasting serves as a backbone for several healthcare applications, including real-time insulin dosing in people with diabetes and physical activity optimization. This paper presents a study on the use of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods for predicting glucose variability (GV) in individuals with open-source automated insulin delivery systems (AID). A three-stage experimental framework is employed in this work to systematically implement and evaluate ML/DL methods on a large-scale diabetes dataset collected from individuals with open-source AID. The first stage involves data collection, the second stage involves data preparation and exploratory analysis, and the third stage involves developing, fine-tuning, and evaluating ML/DL models. The performance and resource costs of the models are evaluated alongside relative and proportional errors for 17 GV metrics. Evaluation of fine-tuned ML/DL models shows considerable accuracy in glucose forecasting and variability analysis up to 48 h in advance. The average MAE ranges from 2.50 mg/dL for long short-term memory models (LSTM) to 4.94 mg/dL for autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models, and the RMSE ranges from 3.7 mg/dL for LSTM to 7.67 mg/dL for ARIMA. Model execution time is proportional to the amount of data used for training, with long short-term memory models having the lowest execution time but the highest memory consumption compared to other models. This work successfully incorporates the use of appropriate programming frameworks, concurrency-enhancing tools, and resource and storage cost estimators to encourage the sustainable use of ML/DL in real-world AID systems. The identification and characterization of lung diseases is one of the most interesting research topics in recent years. They require accurate and rapid diagnosis. Although lung imaging techniques have many advantages for disease diagnosis, the interpretation of medial lung images has always been a major problem for physicians and radiologists due to diagnostic errors. This has encouraged the use of modern artificial intelligence techniques such as deep learning. In this paper, a deep learning architecture based on EfficientNetB7, known as the most advanced architecture among convolutional networks, has been constructed for classification of medical X-ray and CT images of lungs into three classes namely: common pneumonia, coronavirus pneumonia and normal cases. In terms of accuracy, the proposed model is compared with recent pneumonia detection techniques. The results provided robust and consistent features to this system for pneumonia detection with predictive accuracy according to the three classes mentioned above for both imaging modalities: radiography at 99.81% and CT at 99.88%. This work implements an accurate computer-aided system for the analysis of radiographic and CT medical images. Recent years have witnessed booming data on drugs and their associated adverse drug reactions (ADRs). It was reported that these ADRs have resulted in a high hospitalisation rate worldwide. Therefore, a tremendous amount of research has been carried out to predict ADRs in the early phases of drug development, with the goal of reducing possible future risks. The pre-clinical and clinical phases of drug research can be time-consuming and cost-ineffective, so academics are looking forward to more extensive data mining and machine learning methods to be applied in this field of study. In this paper, we try to construct a drug-to-drug network based on non-clinical data sources. The network presents underlying relationships between drug pairs according to their common ADRs. Then, multiple node-level and graph-level network features are extracted from this network, e.g., weighted degree centrality, weighted PageRanks, etc. After concatenating the network features to the original drug features, they were fed into seven machine learning models, e.g., logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, etc., and were compared to the baseline, where there were no network-based features considered. These experiments indicate that all the tested machine-learning methods would benefit from adding these network features. Among all these models, logistic regression (LR) had the highest mean AUROC score (82.1%) across all ADRs tested. Weighted degree centrality and weighted PageRanks were identified to be the most critical network features in the LR classifier. These pieces of evidence strongly indicate that the network approach can be vital in future ADR prediction, and this network-based approach could also be applied to other health informatics datasets. Recently, researchers have turned their focus to predicting the age of people since numerous applications depend on facial recognition approaches. In the medical field, Alzheimer's disease mainly depends on patients' ages. Multiple methods have been implemented and developed to predict age. However, these approaches lack accuracy because every image has unique features, such as shape, pose, and scale. In Saudi Arabia, Vision 2030, concerning the quality of life, is one of the twelve initiatives that were launched recently. The health sector has gained increasing attention as the government has introduced age-based policies to improve the health of its elderly residents. These residents are urgently advised to vaccinate against COVID-19 based on their age. In this paper, proposing a practical, consistent, and trustworthy method to predict age is presented. This method uses the color intensity of eyes and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to predict age in real time based on the ensemble of CNN. A segmentation algorithm is engaged since the approach takes its input from a video stream or an image. This algorithm extracts data from one of the essential parts of the face: the eyes. This part is also informative. Several experiments have been conducted on MATLAB to verify and validate results and relative errors. A Kaggle website dataset is utilized for ages 4 to 59. This dataset includes over 270,000 images, and its size is roughly 2 GB. Consequently, the proposed approach produces ±8.69 years of Mean Square Error (MSE) for the predicted ages. Lastly, a comparative evaluation of relevant studies and the presented algorithm in terms of accuracy, MSE, and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) is also provided. This evaluation shows that the approach developed in the current study outperforms all considered performance metrics since its accuracy is 97.29%. This study found that the color intensity of eyes is highly effective in predicting age, given the high accuracy and acceptable MSE and MAE results. Healthy lifestyle is one of the most important factors in the prevention of premature deaths, chronic diseases, productivity loss, obesity, and other economic and social aspects. The workplace plays an important role in promoting the physical activity and wellbeing of employees. Previous studies are mostly focused on individual interviews, various questionnaires that are a conceptual information about individual health state and might change according to question formulation, specialist competence, and other aspects. In this paper the work ability was mostly related to the employee's physiological state, which consists of three separate systems: cardiovascular, muscular, and neural. Each state consists of several exercises or tests that need to be performed one after another. The proposed data transformation uses fuzzy logic and different membership functions with three or five thresholds, according to the analyzed physiological feature. The transformed datasets are then classified into three stages that correspond to good, moderate, and poor health condition using machine learning techniques. A three-part Random Forest method was applied, where each part corresponds to a separate system. The obtained testing accuracies were 93%, 87%, and 73% for cardiovascular, muscular, and neural human body systems, respectively. The results indicate that the proposed work ability evaluation process may become a good tool for the prevention of possible accidents at work, chronic fatigue, or other health problems. Medical image semantic segmentation is essential in computer-aided diagnosis systems. It can separate tissues and lesions in the image and provide valuable information to radiologists and doctors. The breast ultrasound (BUS) images have advantages: no radiation, low cost, portable, etc. However, there are two unfavorable characteristics: (1) the dataset size is often small due to the difficulty in obtaining the ground truths, and (2) BUS images are usually in poor quality. Trustworthy BUS image segmentation is urgent in breast cancer computer-aided diagnosis systems, especially for fully understanding the BUS images and segmenting the breast anatomy, which supports breast cancer risk assessment. The main challenge for this task is uncertainty in both pixels and channels of the BUS images. In this paper, we propose a Spatial and Channel-wise Fuzzy Uncertainty Reduction Network (SCFURNet) for BUS image semantic segmentation. The proposed architecture can reduce the uncertainty in the original segmentation frameworks. We apply the proposed method to four datasets: (1) a five-category BUS image dataset with 325 images, and (2) three BUS image datasets with only tumor category (1830 images in total). The proposed approach compares state-of-the-art methods such as U-Net with VGG-16, ResNet-50/ResNet-101, Deeplab, FCN-8s, PSPNet, U-Net with information extension, attention U-Net, and U-Net with the self-attention mechanism. It achieves 2.03%, 1.84%, and 2.88% improvements in the Jaccard index on three public BUS datasets, and 6.72% improvement in the tumor category and 4.32% improvement in the overall performance on the five-category dataset compared with that of the original U-shape network with ResNet-101 since it can handle the uncertainty effectively and efficiently. Brain tumors (BTs) are an uncommon but fatal kind of cancer. Therefore, the development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for classifying brain tumors in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been the subject of many research papers so far. However, research in this sector is still in its early stage. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop a lightweight effective implementation of the U-Net deep network for use in performing exact real-time segmentation. Moreover, a simplified deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) architecture for the BT classification is presented for automatic feature extraction and classification of the segmented regions of interest (ROIs). Five convolutional layers, rectified linear unit, normalization, and max-pooling layers make up the DCNN's proposed simplified architecture. The introduced method was verified on multimodal brain tumor segmentation (BRATS 2015) datasets. Our experimental results on BRATS 2015 acquired Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) scores, sensitivity, and classification accuracy of 88.8%, 89.4%, and 88.6% for high-grade gliomas. When it comes to segmenting BRATS 2015 BT images, the performance of our proposed CAD framework is on par with existing state-of-the-art methods. However, the accuracy achieved in this study for the classification of BT images has improved upon the accuracy reported in prior studies. Statistics show that an estimated 64 million people worldwide suffer from glaucoma. To aid in the detection of this disease, this paper presents a new public dataset containing eye fundus images that was developed for glaucoma pattern-recognition studies using deep learning (DL). The dataset, denoted Brazil Glaucoma, comprises 2000 images obtained from 1000 volunteers categorized into two groups: those with glaucoma (50%) and those without glaucoma (50%). All images were captured with a smartphone attached to a Welch Allyn panoptic direct ophthalmoscope. Further, a DL approach for the automatic detection of glaucoma was developed using the new dataset as input to a convolutional neural network ensemble model. The accuracy between positive and negative glaucoma detection, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated using five-fold cross-validation to train and refine the classification model. The results showed that the proposed method can identify glaucoma from eye fundus images with an accuracy of 90.0%. Thus, the combination of fundus images obtained using a smartphone attached to a portable panoptic ophthalmoscope and artificial intelligence algorithms yielded satisfactory results in the overall accuracy of glaucoma detection tests. Blood pressure (BP) determines whether a person has hypertension and offers implications as to whether he or she could be affected by cardiovascular disease. Cuff-based sphygmomanometers have traditionally provided both accuracy and reliability, but they require bulky equipment and relevant skills to obtain precise measurements. BP measurement from photoplethysmography (PPG) signals has become a promising alternative for convenient and unobtrusive BP monitoring. Moreover, the recent developments in remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) algorithms have enabled new innovations for contactless BP measurement. This paper illustrates the evolution of BP measurement techniques from the biophysical theory, through the development of contact-based BP measurement from PPG signals, and to the modern innovations of contactless BP measurement from rPPG signals. We consolidate knowledge from a diverse background of academic research to highlight the importance of multi-feature analysis for improving measurement accuracy. The number of diabetic patients is increasing yearly worldwide, requiring the need for a quick intervention to help these people. Mortality rates are higher for diabetic patients with other serious health complications. Thus, early prediction for such diseases positively impacts healthcare quality and can prevent serious health complications later. This paper constructs an efficient prediction system for predicting diabetes in its early stage. The proposed system starts with a Local Outlier Factor (LOF)-based outlier detection technique to detect outlier data. A Balanced Bagging Classifier (BBC) technique is used to balance data distribution. Finally, integration between association rules and classification algorithms is used to develop a prediction model based on real data. Four classification algorithms were utilized in addition to an a priori algorithm that discovered relationships between various factors. The named algorithms are Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Decision Trees (DT), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and K Nearest Neighbor (KNN) for data classification. Results revealed that KNN provided the highest accuracy of 97.36% compared to the other applied algorithms. An a priori algorithm extracted association rules based on the Lift matrix. Since the emergence of COVID-19, most health systems around the world have experienced a series of spikes in the number of infected patients, leading to collapse of the health systems in many countries. The use of clinical laboratory tests can serve as a discriminatory method for disease severity, defining the profile of patients with a higher risk of mortality. In this paper, we study the results of applying predictive models to data regarding COVID-19 outcome, using three datasets after age stratification of patients. The extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm was employed as the predictive method, yielding excellent results. The area under the receiving operator characteristic curve (AUROC) value was 0.97 for the subgroup of patients up to 65 years of age. In this paper, various machine learning algorithms were used in order to predict the evolution of open-angle glaucoma (POAG). The datasets were built containing clinical observations and objective measurements made at the Countess of Chester Hospital in the UK and at the "St. Spiridon" Hospital of Iași, Romania. Using these datasets, different classification problems were proposed. The evaluation of glaucoma progression was conducted based on parameters such as VFI (Visual field index), MD (Mean Deviation), PSD (Pattern standard deviation), and RNFL (Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer). As classification tools, the following algorithms were used: Multilayer Perceptron, Random Forest, Random Tree, C4.5, k-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, and Non-Nested Generalized Exemplars. The best results, with an accuracy of over 90%, were obtained with Multilayer Perceptron and Random Forest algorithms. The NNGE algorithm also proved very useful in creating a hierarchy of the input values according to their influence (weight) on the considered outputs. On the other hand, the decision tree algorithms gave us insight into the logic used in their classification, which is of practical importance in obtaining additional information regarding the rationale behind a certain rule or decision. Smartphones are currently extensively used worldwide, and advances in hardware quality have engendered improvements in smartphone image quality, which is occasionally comparable to the quality of medical imaging systems. This paper proposes two algorithms for pupil recognition: a stateful-service-based pupil recognition mechanism and color component low-pass filtering algorithm. The PRSSM algorithm can determine pupil diameters in images captured in indoor natural light environments, and the CCLPF algorithm can determine pupil diameters in those captured outdoors under sunlight. The PRSSM algorithm converts RGB colors into the hue saturation value color space and performs adaptive thresholding, morphological operations, and contour detection for effectively analyzing the diameter of the pupil. The CCLPF algorithm derives the average matrix for the red components of eye images captured in outdoor environments. It also performs low-pass filtering, morphological and contour detection operations, and rule-of-thumb correction. This algorithm can effectively analyze pupil diameter in outdoor natural light. Traditional ruler-based measurements of pupil diameter were used as the reference to verify the accuracy of the PRSSM and CCLPF algorithms and to compare their accuracy with that of the other algorithm. This paper employs a unique sensor fusion (SF) approach to detect a COVID-19 suspect and the enhanced MobileNetV2 model is used for face mask detection on an Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform. The SF algorithm avoids incorrect predictions of the suspect. Health data are continuously monitored and recorded on the ThingSpeak cloud server. When a COVID-19 suspect is detected, an emergency email is sent to healthcare personnel with the GPS position of the suspect. A lightweight and fast deep learning model is used to recognize appropriate mask positioning; this restricts virus transmission. When tested with the real-world masked face dataset (RMFD) dataset, the enhanced MobileNetV2 neural network is optimal for Raspberry Pi. Our IoT device and deep learning model are 98.50% (compared to commercial devices) and 99.26% accurate, respectively, and the time required for face mask evaluation is 31.1 milliseconds. Background: The ecological validity associated with usability testing of health information technologies (HITs) can affect test results and the predictability of real-world performance. It is, therefore, necessary to identify conditions with the greatest effect on validity. Method: We conducted a comparative analysis of two usability testing conditions. We tested a HIT designed for anesthesiologists to detect pain signals and compared two fidelity levels of ecological validity. We measured the difference in the number and type of use errors identified between high and low-fidelity experimental conditions. Results: We identified the same error types in both test conditions, although the number of errors varied as a function of the condition. The difference in total error counts was relatively modest and not consistent across levels of severity. Conclusions: Increasing ecological validity does not invariably increase the ability to detect use errors. Our findings suggest that low-fidelity tests are an efficient way to identify and mitigate usability issues affecting ease of use, effectiveness, and safety. One expanding area of bioinformatics is medical diagnosis through the categorization of biomedical characteristics. Automatic medical strategies to boost the diagnostic through machine learning (ML) methods are challenging. They require a formal examination of their performance to identify the best conditions that enhance the ML method. This work proposes variants of the Voting and Stacking (VC and SC) ensemble strategies based on diverse auto-tuning supervised machine learning techniques to increase the efficacy of traditional baseline classifiers for the automatic diagnosis of vertebral column orthopedic illnesses. The ensemble strategies are created by first combining a complete set of auto-tuned baseline classifiers based on different processes, such as geometric, probabilistic, logic, and optimization. Next, the three most promising classifiers are selected among k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Naïve Bayes (NB), Logistic Regression (LR), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Decision Tree (DT). The grid-search K-Fold cross-validation strategy is applied to auto-tune the baseline classifier hyperparameters. The performances of the proposed ensemble strategies are independently compared with the auto-tuned baseline classifiers. A concise analysis evaluates accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and ROC-ACU metrics. The analysis also examines the misclassified disease elements to find the most and least reliable classifiers for this specific medical problem. The results show that the VC ensemble strategy provides an improvement comparable to that of the best baseline classifier (the kNN). Meanwhile, when all baseline classifiers are included in the SC ensemble, this strategy surpasses 95% in all the evaluated metrics, standing out as the most suitable option for classifying vertebral column diseases. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a revolutionary technology with several applications across different dental fields, including pedodontics. This systematic review has the objective to catalog and explore the various uses of artificial intelligence in pediatric dentistry. Methods: A thorough exploration of scientific databases was carried out to identify studies addressing the usage of AI in pediatric dentistry until December 2023 in the Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases by two researchers, S.L.R. and A.L.G. Results: From a pool of 1301 articles, only 64 met the predefined criteria and were considered for inclusion in this review. From the data retrieved, it was possible to provide a narrative discussion of the potential implications of AI in the specialized area of pediatric dentistry. The use of AI algorithms and machine learning techniques has shown promising results in several applications of daily dental pediatric practice, including the following: (1) assisting the diagnostic and recognizing processes of early signs of dental pathologies, (2) enhancing orthodontic diagnosis by automating cephalometric tracing and estimating growth and development, (3) assisting and educating children to develop appropriate behavior for dental hygiene. Conclusion: AI holds significant potential in transforming clinical practice, improving patient outcomes, and elevating the standards of care in pediatric patients. (1) Background: Sarcopenia and chronic pain are prevalent syndromes among older adults that negatively affect their quality of life. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between chronic pain and sarcopenia among Greek community-dwelling older adults. (2) Methods: Older adults >60 years of age were enrolled in this descriptive, cross-sectional study. Sarcopenia status was assessed according to the EWGSOP2 2019 algorithm. This assessment included the evaluation of muscle strength, body composition and gait speed. Pain location and pain characteristics were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. Pain severity was assessed via the visual analog scale. The participants were also asked to fill out the SARC-F, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) questionnaire. (3) Results: This study included 314 participants with a mean age of 71.3 ± 7.4 years. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 19.4 (n = 61), and 44.26% of the sarcopenic participants recorded chronic pain. Chronic pain was associated with sarcopenia, comorbidities, the number of drugs and HADS. (4) Conclusions: The results demonstrated a high percentage of chronic pain in the sarcopenic population. The results also highlight the importance of the detection of chronic pain in older patients with sarcopenia in order to develop effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. Suicide is a significant public health concern globally, with its varying rates influenced by numerous factors, including seasonal changes. Online search behaviors, particularly searches related to suicide and mental health, have been proposed as real-time indicators of suicidal ideation in populations. In this study, a cross-sectional time series analysis was conducted, utilizing data on suicide attempts from the Polish Police Headquarters and online search behavior from Google Trends over a decade. Suicide attempt data were analyzed alongside the frequency of Google searches for suicide-related keywords derived from the Polish Corpus of Suicide Notes. A total of 66 keywords were selected for analysis to identify seasonal trends and patterns in search behavior. The study employed linear regression, Seasonal Mann-Kendall tests, and TBATS models to analyze the data. Suicide rates show seasonal patterns, peaking in warmer months. However, keyword searches did not strongly correlate with peak suicide months. This study enhances our understanding of suicide-related search trends and their potential connection to suicide rates. The prevalence of dermatological conditions in primary care, coupled with challenges such as dermatologist shortages and rising consultation costs, highlights the need for innovative solutions. Artificial intelligence (AI) holds promise for improving the diagnostic analysis of skin lesion images, potentially enhancing patient care in primary settings. This systematic review following PRISMA guidelines examined primary studies (2012–2022) assessing AI algorithms' diagnostic accuracy for skin diseases in primary care. Studies were screened for eligibility based on their availability in the English language and exclusion criteria, with risk of bias evaluated using QUADAS-2. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Fifteen studies (2019–2022), primarily from Europe and the USA, focusing on diagnostic accuracy were included. Sensitivity ranged from 58% to 96.1%, with accuracies varying from 0.41 to 0.93. AI applications encompassed triage and diagnostic support across diverse skin conditions in primary care settings, involving both patients and primary care professionals. While AI demonstrates potential for enhancing the accuracy of skin disease diagnostics in primary care, further research is imperative to address study heterogeneity and ensure algorithm reliability across diverse populations. Future investigations should prioritise robust dataset development and consider representative patient samples. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality among nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients who undergo liver transplants. In the present study, machine learning algorithms were used to identify important risk factors for cardiovascular death and to develop a prediction model. The Standard Transplant Analysis and Research data were gathered from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network. After cleaning and preprocessing, the dataset comprised 10,871 patients and 92 features. Recursive feature elimination (RFE) and select from model (SFM) were applied to select relevant features from the dataset and avoid overfitting. Multiple machine learning algorithms, including logistic regression, random forest, decision tree, and XGBoost, were used with RFE and SFM. Additionally, prediction models were developed using a support vector machine, Gaussian naïve Bayes, K-nearest neighbors, random forest, and XGBoost algorithms. Finally, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were used to increase interpretability. The findings showed that the best feature selection method was RFE with a random forest estimator, and the most critical features were recipient and donor blood type, body mass index, recipient and donor state of residence, serum creatinine, and year of transplantation. Furthermore, among all the outcomes, the XGBoost model had the highest performance, with an accuracy value of 0.6909 and an area under the curve value of 0.86. The findings also revealed a predictive relationship between features and cardiovascular death after liver transplant among NASH patients. Male infertility is a relevant public health problem, but there is no systematic review of the different machine learning (ML) models and their accuracy so far. The present review aims to comprehensively investigate the use of ML algorithms in predicting male infertility, thus reporting the accuracy of the used models in the prediction of male infertility as a primary outcome. Particular attention will be paid to the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs). A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct between 15 July and 23 October 2023, conducted under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We performed a quality assessment of the included studies using the recommended tools suggested for the type of study design adopted. We also made a screening of the Risk of Bias (RoB) associated with the included studies. Thus, 43 relevant publications were included in this review, for a total of 40 different ML models detected. The studies included reported a good quality, even if RoB was not always good for all the types of studies. The included studies reported a median accuracy of 88% in predicting male infertility using ML models. Stroke consequences include hemiparesis and difficulty walking. Several types of canes exist to overcome these alterations, but little data compares the quadripod cane and the rolling cane in hemiparetic patients. The objective of this work is twofold: to determine whether the gait speed—the most often used parameter to assess gait performance—depends on the type of cane, and to establish which spatiotemporal parameters have the most influence. Thirty-four hemiparetic patients performed 10 m walking tests at comfortable and fast speed conditions, using both canes on two different days. To objectively analyze their gait patterns, we used a tri-axial Inertial Measurement Units (IMU)-based system to record the walking signals from which we extracted the gait spatiotemporal parameters. We particularly examined the speed, stride length, and durations of stance, swing, and double support phases. The results showed that hemiparetic patients walked faster with the rolling cane during both speed conditions. These speed increases could be explained by the decrease in the stance phase duration of the affected leg, the decrease in the double support duration, and the increase in cadence. Children with developmental central hypotonia have reduced muscle tone secondary to non-progressive damage to the brain or brainstem. Children may have transient delays, mild or global functional impairments, and the lack of a clear understanding of this diagnosis makes evaluating appropriate interventions challenging. This overview aimed to systematically describe the best available evidence for tools to identify and evaluate children with developmental central hypotonia aged 2 months to 6 years. A systematic review of systematic reviews or syntheses was conducted with electronic searches in PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Google Scholar, and PEDro and supplemented with hand-searching. Methodological quality and risk-of-bias were evaluated, and included reviews and tools were compared and contrasted. Three systematic reviews, an evidence-based clinical assessment algorithm, three measurement protocols, and two additional measurement tools were identified. For children aged 2 months to 2 years, the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination has the strongest measurement properties and contains a subset of items that may be useful for quantifying the severity of hypotonia. For children aged 2–6 years, a clinical algorithm and individual tools provide guidance. Moreover, clinical decision support systems in cardiology have improved significantly over the past decade. The addition of AI to these clinical decision support systems can improve patient outcomes by processing large amounts of data, identifying subtle associations, and providing a timely, evidence-based recommendation to healthcare professionals. Lastly, the application of AI allows for personalized care by utilizing predictive models and generating patient-specific treatment plans. Deep-learning algorithms hold promise in processing physiological signal data, including electrocardiograms (ECGs) and electroencephalograms (EEGs). However, healthcare often requires long-term monitoring, posing a challenge to traditional deep-learning models. These models are generally trained once and then deployed, which limits their ability to adapt to the dynamic and evolving nature of healthcare scenarios. Continual learning—known for its adaptive learning capabilities over time—offers a promising solution to these challenges. However, there remains an absence of consolidated literature, which reviews the techniques, applications, and challenges of continual learning specific to physiological signal analysis, as well as its future directions. Bridging this gap, our review seeks to provide an overview of the prevailing techniques and their implications for smart healthcare. We delineate the evolution from traditional approaches to the paradigms of continual learning. We aim to offer insights into the challenges faced and outline potential paths forward. Various industries, including engineering, media/entertainment, finance, and education, have already reaped significant benefits by incorporating AI systems into their operations. Notably, the healthcare sector has witnessed rapid growth in the utilization of AI technology. Nevertheless, there remains untapped potential for AI to truly revolutionize the industry. It is important to note that despite concerns about job displacement, AI in healthcare should not be viewed as a threat to human workers. Instead, AI systems are designed to augment and support healthcare professionals, freeing up their time to focus on more complex and critical tasks. Studies suggest non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) as a potential therapeutic option for various pathological conditions, such as epilepsy and depression. Exhalation-controlled taVNS, which synchronizes stimulation with internal body rhythms, holds promise for enhanced neuromodulation, but there is no closed-loop system in the literature capable of performing such integration in real time. In this context, the objective was to develop real-time signal processing techniques and an integrated closed-loop device with sensors to acquire physiological data. After a conditioning stage, the signal is processed and delivers synchronized electrical stimulation during the patient's expiratory phase. Additional modules were designed for processing, software-controlled selectors, remote and autonomous operation, improved analysis, and graphical visualization. The signal processing method effectively extracted respiratory cycles and successfully attenuated signal noise. Heart rate variability was assessed in real time, using linear statistical evaluation. The prototype feedback stimulator device was physically constructed. Respiratory peak detection achieved an accuracy of 90%, and the real-time processing resulted in a small delay of up to 150 ms in the detection of the expiratory phase. Thus, preliminary results show promising accuracy, indicating the need for additional tests to optimize real-time processing and the application of the prototype in clinical studies.
