Literature reviews are essential for any researcher trying to keep up to date with the burgeoning software engineering literature. FAST$^2$ is a novel tool for reducing the effort required for conducting literature reviews by assisting the researchers to find the next promising paper to read (among a set of unread papers). This paper describes FAST$^2$ and tests it on four large software engineering literature reviews conducted by Wahono (2015), Hall (2012), Radjenovi\'c (2013) and Kitchenham (2017). We find that FAST$^2$ is a faster and robust tool to assist researcher finding relevant SE papers which can compensate for the errors made by humans during the review process. The effectiveness of FAST$^2$ can be attributed to three key innovations: (1) a novel way of applying external domain knowledge (a simple two or three keyword search) to guide the initial selection of papers---which helps to find relevant research papers faster with less variances; (2) an estimator of the number of remaining relevant papers yet to be found---which in practical settings can be used to decide if the reviewing process needs to be terminated; (3) a novel self-correcting classification algorithm---automatically corrects itself, in cases where the researcher wrongly classifies a paper., Comment: 20+3 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, and 4 algorithms. Knowledge-based development has become a new urban policy approach for the competitive cities of the global knowledge economy era. For those cities seeking a knowledge-based development, benchmarking is an essential prerequisite for informed and strategic vision and policy making to achieve a prosperous development. Nevertheless, benchmarked knowledge-based development performance analysis of global and emerging knowledge cities is an understudied area. This paper aims to contribute to the field by introducing the methodology of a novel performance assessment model—that is the Knowledge-Based Urban Development Assessment Model—and providing lessons from the application of the model in an international knowledge city performance analysis study. The assessment model puts renowned global and emerging knowledge cities—that are Birmingham, Boston, Brisbane, Helsinki, Istanbul, Manchester, Melbourne, San Francisco, Sydney, Toronto, and Vancouver—under the knowledge-based development microscope. The results of the analysis provide internationally benchmarked snapshot of the degree of achievements in various knowledge-based urban development performance areas of the investigated knowledge cities, and reveals insightful lessons on scrutinizing the global perspectives on knowledge-based development of cities.

Citation recommendation can help researchers quickly find supplementary or alternative references in massive academic resources. Current research on citation recommendation mainly focuses on the citing papers, resulting in the enormous cited papers are ignored, including the relations among cited papers and their citation context cited in citing papers. Moreover, cited paper’s content is often denoted with its original title and abstract, which is hard to acquire and rarely considers different citation motivations. Furthermore, the most appropriate method for semantic representation of cited papers’ relations and content is uncertain. Therefore, this paper studies citation recommendation from the perspective of semantic representation of cited papers’ relations and content. Firstly, four forms of citation context are designed and extracted as cited papers’ content considering citation motivations, as well as co-citation relationships are extracted as cited papers’ relations. Secondly, 132 methods are designed for generating semantic vector of cited paper, including four network embedding methods, 16 methods by combining four text representation algorithms with four forms of citation content, and 112 fusion methods. Finally, similarity among cited papers is calculated for citation recommendation and a quantitative evaluation method based on link prediction is designed, to find the most appropriate form of citation content and the optimal method. The result shows that doc2vecC (Document to Vector through Corruption) with the form of CS&SS (Current Sentences and Surrounding Sentences) performs best, in which the AUC (Area Under Curve) and MAP (Macro Average Precision) reach 0.877 and 0.889 and have increased by 0.462 and 0.370 compared with the worst-performing method. This performance is slightly improved by parameters adjustment, and a case study is performed whose results have further proved the effectiveness of this method. In addition, among four forms of cited papers’ content, CS&SS performs best in almost all methods. Furthermore, the fusion methods not always perform better than the single methods, where doc2vecC (CS&SS) performs better than the best fusion method GCN (Graph Convolutional Network). These results not only prove the effectiveness of citation recommendation from the perspective of cited paper, but also provide helpful and useful suggestions for method selection and citation content selection. The data and conclusions can be extended to other text mining-related tasks. Simultaneously, it is a preliminary research which needs to be further studied in other domains using emerging semantic representation methods.

Paper is an example of a valuable material that can be recycled and recovered. In this study, a two-stage stochastic revenue-maximization model is presented to determine a long-term strategy under uncertainty for a large-scale real-world paper recycling company. This network-design problem includes optimal recycling center locations and optimal flow amounts between the nodes in the multi-facility environment. The proposed model is formulated with two-stage stochastic mixed-integer and robust programming approaches. The models are solved by commercial software GAMS 21.6/CPLEX 9.0 and the results are compared. The study is followed by the analyses of the results.

Paper consumption has been on decline in USA and West Europe for years.Significant capacity reduction in manufacturing capacity has taken place.To manage such environment successfully information systems and customer base require attention.Even mature industries offer price differentiation potential among customer base.Customer base changes can be extremely rapid in markets on the decline. For the Nordic paper industry the years 2001-2007 were a culmination point as to paper production and deliveries. The study uses plant level empirical time series data from these years from one large integrated Finnish paper mill. The research data covers complete customer data and cost components, and a major supplier for European paper markets. The case company worked actively with a customer base and concentrated on the most profitable markets. However, some unprofitable deliveries, which still covered the variable and fixed costs, also supported the operation of the mill and the continuing of the 24/7 shift. The results indicate that even with matured and bulky products like paper, it is still possible to operate on the basis of separated pricing, some bargaining power, and customized focus. In this respect, the markets do not seem to follow the economic theory expectation entirely, that is, for such a mature and bulky product market price differentiation should not be possible. However, to utilize this, it requires up-to-date information system concerning internal cost accounting, together with an emphasis on the management to have an active role with the customer base.

This article explores the application of image processing techniques in recyclable waste paper sorting. In recycling, waste papers are segregated into various grades as they are subjected to different recycling processes. Highly sorted paper streams facilitate high quality end products and save processing chemicals and energy. From 1932 to 2009, different mechanical and optical paper sorting methods have been developed to fill the paper sorting demand. Still, in many countries including Malaysia, waste papers are sorted into different grades using a manual sorting system. Because of inadequate throughput and some major drawbacks of mechanical paper sorting systems, the popularity of optical paper sorting systems has increased. Automated paper sorting systems offer significant advantages over human inspection in terms of worker fatigue, throughput, speed, and accuracy. This research attempts to develop a smart vision sensing system that is able to separate the different grades of paper using first-order features. To construct a template database, a statistical approach with intra-class and inter-class variation techniques are applied to the feature selection process. Finally, the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm is applied for paper object grade identification. The remarkable achievement obtained with the method is the accurate identification and dynamic sorting of all grades of papers using simple image processing techniques.

Accurate characterization is an important issue in paper currency recognition system. This paper proposes a robust paper currency recognition method based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM). By employing HMM, the texture characteristics of paper currencies are modeled as a random process. The proposed algorithm can be used for distinguishing paper currency from different countries. A similarity measure has been used for the classification in the proposed algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, experiments have been conducted on more than 100 denominations from different countries. The results indicate 98% accuracy for recognition of paper currency.

In this paper, we describe the development of a system for evaluating an specific quality characteristic of recycled paper sheets using techniques of image analysis and pattern recognition. We call Bumpiness the phenomenon of interest, which is new in the literature on paper quality. This phenomenon is characterized by the appearance of macroscopic undulations on the paper sheet surface that may emerge shortly or some time after its production. We explore the detection and measurement of this defect by means of computer vision and statistical pattern recognition techniques that may allow early detection at the production site. Our goal is to give an scalar continuous measure of Bumpiness. We propose features computed from Gabor filter banks (GFB) and discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) for the characterization of paper sheet surface Bumpiness in recycled paper images. The starting point is to state the problem as a classification of the paper sheet images into two classes: low and high Bumpiness. In this setting we obtain, with both proposed texture modelling approaches (GFB and DWT), classification accuracies comparable to the agreement between human observers. The best performance is obtained using DWT features. Finally, we propose as the scalar index of Bumpines the fisher discriminant analysis (FDA) function defined on the space of the best features for the classification task. We perform an innovative validation process of this Bumpiness index, based on the ordering of random pairs of images, obtaining a very high agreement with the human observers.

This paper presents a fuzzy neural network predictive control scheme for studying the coagulation process of wastewater treatment in a paper mill. An adaptive fuzzy neural network is employed to model the nonlinear relationships between the removal rate of pollutants and the chemical dosages, in order to adapt the system to a variety of operating conditions and acquire a more flexible learning ability. The system includes a fuzzy neural network emulator of the reaction process, a fuzzy neural network controller, and an optimization procedure based on a performance function that is used to identify desired control inputs. The gradient descent algorithm method is used to realize the optimization procedure. The results indicate that reasonable forecasting and control performances have been achieved through the developed system.

This paper is concerned with a technique for detecting and monitoring abnormal paper formation variations in machine direction online in various frequency regions. A paper web is illuminated by two red diode lasers and the reflected light recorded as two time series of high resolution measurements constitute the input signal to the papermaking process monitoring system. The time series are divided into blocks and each block is analyzed separately. The task is treated as kernel based novelty detection applied to a multi-resolution time series representation obtained from the band-pass filtering of the Fourier power spectrum of the time series block. The frequency content of each frequency region is characterized by a feature vector, which is transformed using the kernel canonical correlation analysis and then categorized into the inlier or outlier class by the novelty detector. The ratio of outlying data points, significantly exceeding the predetermined value, indicates abnormalities in the paper formation. The experimental investigations performed have shown good repetitiveness and stability of the paper formation abnormalities detection results. The tools developed are used for online paper formation monitoring in a paper mill.

The system described here is concerned with the revision of inductive learning theory, i.e. the induced concept representation is updated and extended by taking into account new observations, as yet unlearned by the system. One of the aims of this paper is to show that it is feasible to classify observations, which have a great number of unknown values (incomplete information), as well as to estimate those values by exploiting pertinently known values. Imprecise information is also envisaged. The system works in two stages. Stage One applies a non-incremental unsupervised induction method, which is a learning cycle, make up of three steps: (i) verification of input information; (ii) classification of observations; (iii) organization of the information into hierarchies of clusters, according to concept formation. Stage Two is an incremental unsupervised induction method, which classifies new observations allowing for the later inclusion of currently unknown values. In both stages, the system explores the elements of each cluster in order to discover their relationship. Another interesting point in our proposal is that its involved algorithms have polynomial complexity in order to deal with large databases. The whole mechanism is illustrated throughout this paper by making reference to experimental results obtained in the Periodic Table of Elements, PTE.

As printing machines attain higher operating speeds, paper feeding mechanisms are more prone to problems such as vibration, noise, and paper jams. To design reliable paper feeding mechanisms, designers first use heuristic knowledge to decide the basic specifications of the printer according to the user's requirements. In the preliminary design stage, the design process is represented hierarchically and the characteristics of each part are determined. Conceptually, the process is analogous to the methodology used in configuration design. In this research, the design process has been analyzed systematically by the OMT (object modeling technique) method, which integrates the object, functional, and dynamic models. The physical parts of the paper feeding mechanism are represented as objects, and the design knowledge and design constraints are represented by rules and methods. A commercial expert system shell, Nexpert Object, is adapted for the implementation. The inferred results are converted to create the BOM (bill of materials) data and are saved in a database for the detailed design and production stage.

Feature selection determines relevant features in the data. It is often applied in pattern classification, data mining, as well as machine learning. A special concern for feature selection nowadays is that the size of a database is normally very large, both vertically and horizontally. In addition, feature sets may grow as the data collection process continues. Effective solutions are needed to accommodate the practical demands. This paper concentrates on three issues: large number of features, large data size, and expanding feature set. For the first issue, we suggest a probabilistic algorithm to select features. For the second issue, we present a scalable probabilistic algorithm that expedites feature selection further and can scale up without sacrificing the quality of selected features. For the third issue, we propose an incremental algorithm that adapts to the newly extended feature set and captures `concept drifts' by removing features from previously selected and newly added ones. We expect that research on scalable feature selection will be extended to distributed and parallel computing and have impact on applications of data mining and machine learning.

Knowedge-based systems provide the structure, the process and multidisciplinary integration tools to better understand and further develop projects in areas such as reengineering the organization, concurrent engineering, quality management and other critical management efforts in business and government. Curriculum development in education also benefits greatly from using the integrative powers of the KBS disciplines Examples taken from education focus on knowledge-based systems applied to the areas of K-12 course design, bachelor's degree curriculum design in integrated science, and graduate studies serving “professional transitioning.” Concepts of “idea fields” in organizational behavior are also discussed.

In this study, the Bohart and Adams' model taking into account bed depth, and influent dye concentration was studied to exhibit adsorption process of textile dyes (Basic Blue 41 - BB41 and Reactive Black 5 - RB5) in glass columns using tree barks (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). Adsorption capacity coefficient values are determined using the Bohart and Adams' bed depth service model. The model indicated that adsorption properties of E. camaldulensis barks conform for tertiary treatment for textile BB41 and RB5 containing wastewaters. An artificial neural network (ANN) based model for determining dye adsorption capability of bed system is also developed. The breakthrough curves of adsorption are also exhibited by this model. Results showed that ANN model could describe present system. Results showed that with the increases of bed height, and the decreases of influent dye concentrations, the breakthrough time was delayed. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gaussian conditional random fields (GCRF) are a well-known used structured model for continuous outputs that uses multiple unstructured predictors to form its features and at the same time exploits dependence structure among outputs, which is provided by a similarity measure. In this paper, a Gaussian conditional random fields model for structured binary classification (GCRFBC) is proposed. The model is applicable to classification problems with undirected graphs, intractable for standard classification CRFs. The model representation of GCRFBC is extended by latent variables which yield some appealing properties. Thanks to the GCRF latent structure, the model becomes tractable, efficient and open to improvements previously applied to GCRF regression models. In addition, the model allows for reduction of noise, that might appear if structures were defined directly between discrete outputs. Additionally, two different forms of the algorithm are presented: GCRFBCb (GCRGBC - Bayesian) and GCRFBCnb (GCRFBC - non Bayesian). The extended method of local variational approximation of sigmoid function is used for solving empirical Bayes in Bayesian GCRFBCb variant, whereas MAP value of latent variables is the basis for learning and inference in the GCRFBCnb variant. The inference in GCRFBCb is solved by Newton-Cotes formulas for one-dimensional integration. Both models are evaluated on synthetic data and real-world data. It was shown that both models achieve better prediction performance than unstructured predictors. Furthermore, computational and memory complexity is evaluated. In this paper, we present a novel deep learning-based architecture, which is under the scope of expert and intelligent systems, to perform accurate real-time tridimensional hand pose estimation using a single RGB frame as an input, so there is no need to use multiple cameras or points of view, or RGB-D devices. The proposed pipeline is composed of two convolutional neural network architectures. The first one is in charge of detecting the hand in the image. The second one is able to accurately infer the tridimensional position of the joints retrieving, thus, the full hand pose. To do this, we captured our own large-scale dataset composed of images of hands and the corresponding 3D joints annotations. The proposal achieved a 3D hand pose mean error of below 5 mm on both the proposed dataset and Stereo Hand Pose Tracking Benchmark, which is a public dataset. Our method also outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. We also demonstrate in this paper the application of the proposal to perform a robotic hand teleoperation with high success. Acquiring knowledge for conversation modeling is an important task in the process of building a Conversational Agent (Chatbot). However, it is a quite difficult process that requires too much time and efforts. To overcome these difficulties, in this paper, we demonstrate a novel methodology for the automatic conversational knowledge extraction from an existing Chatbot. Extracted knowledge will be used as training dataset for building a Neural Network Conversational Agent. The experiments in the paper show that our proposed approach can be used for the automatic knowledge extraction from any type of Chatbot on the Internet. The experiment that is presented in this paper has two phases. In the first phase, we present a methodology for the conversational knowledge extraction. In the second phase of the experiment, we introduce a methodology for building a new Neural Conversational Agent using a deep learning Neural Network framework. The key novelty of our proposed approach is the automated machine-machine conversational knowledge sharing and reuse. This is an important step towards building the new conversational agents skipping the difficult and time-consuming procedure of knowledge acquisition.

This paper presents a new image processing and analysis technique for the quality evaluation of cell nuclei to support medical diagnostics in breast cancer. The technique allows cell nuclei that are deformed or overlapped by biological material to be reconstructed. The paper proposes a sensitivity and similarity approach, enriching the PatchMatch correspondence algorithm in accurate cell reconstruction. Its application in reconstruction processes enables accelerated computations and an increased probability of obtaining appropriate segmentation results. The numerical results demonstrate that the developed system allows for automatic and effective cell nuclei reconstruction with an acceptable average area accuracy level above 85% compared with manual human results (assuming manual segmentation as a true value). The reconstruction system allows for the recovery of the proper shape of the analyzed distorted cells very rapidly and in a repeatable manner. An additional advantage of the procedure is that the nuclei area overlapped by artifacts or other cells can be determined. The experimental results prove the high utility of the method in final HER2 gene amplification assessment in breast cancer images.

Value efficiency analysis is an approach to incorporate the Decision-Maker's (DM) priori knowledge (preference information) into efficiency analysis. This paper presents a multi-objective programming model to measure the value efficiency. The model's feasible region is the production possibility set in data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the objective functions are the value efficiency scores corresponding to input and output components. Considering the structure of the proposed model and the concept of value efficiency, the step method (STEM) method to solve the model and gain the value efficiency is used in this paper. By selecting MPU (most preferred unit) units based on the manager's choice, the suitable benchmarks and value efficiency scores could be obtained corresponding to the unit under evaluation, then one could see that the obtained benchmarks and value efficiency scores are strongly dependent on the selected MPU units. Finally, a numerical example is proposed to illustrate the credit of the proposed approach. The method has been applied for real world data.
