Abstract This study aims at to make a heuristic analysis of energy efficiency performance of Indian paper industry in a non-parametric production theoretic approach. Using the data for 2004–05 to 2013–14, radial and non-radial variants of DEA were employed to estimate energy saving potential and identify the relative position of paper industry across the states. Preliminary analysis in terms of energy intensity scores showed declining trends of energy intensity over the period of analysis for most of the states except states like Assam, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Punjab where it does not decline much. Assuming a variable returns to scale (VRS) technology under the conditions of inherent heterogeneity and market imperfection, the slack-based measure (SBM) reported a much higher energy saving potential than reported by other measures in the study. Further by taking scale efficiency into account, the study documented the higher contribution of pure energy inefficiency in explaining the total energy inefficiency within the paper industry relative to scale inefficiency. Finally, the study recommends the propagation of energy efficiency program through a market-based and regulatory mechanism along with consolidation and technological advancement of individual units, in order to tap vast energy saving potential and thereby ensure the growth and environmental sustainability. The Swedish pulp and paper industry (PPI) must increase energy efficiency to remain competitive on the global market, which has experienced entries from countries with cheaper energy and raw material supplies. Interactions among variables for energy use, production, energy management, electricity price and firm characteristics (FC), in different types of mills, i.e., pulp, paper and integrated mills, in Sweden from 2006 to 2015 indicate that correlations among the studied variables were different in different types of mills. This difference between types of mills seemed to originate partly from varying accessibility to production residue that could be used for energy. For all types of mills, variation of electricity prices did not correlate significantly with energy efficiency during the study period. The studied FC were firm's age, number of employees, number of companies in company group, net sales and profit for the year. Energy efficiency was more affected by the variables characterizing energy and production compared to the variables representing FC. This study also suggested presence of possible discrepancies between FC that were perceived as barriers to energy management towards energy efficiency, according to previous studies, and what was shown by the data combining variables representing energy use, production and FC. Production of transportation fuels from biorefineries via biomass gasification has been suggested as a way of introducing renewable alternatives in the transportation system with an aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. By co-locating gasification-based processes within heat demanding industries, excess heat from the gasification process can replace fossil or renewable fuels. The objective of this study was to compare the heat integration potential of four different gasification-based biorefinery concepts with a chemical pulp and paper mill. The results showed that the choice of end-product which was either methanol, Fischer-Tropsch crude, synthetic natural gas or electricity, can have significant impact on the heat integration potential with a pulp and paper mill and that the heat saving measures implemented in the mill in connection to integration of a gasification process can increase the biomass resource efficiency by up to 3%-points. Heat saving measures can reduce the necessary biomass input to the biorefinery by 50% if the sizing constraint is to replace the bark boiler with excess heat from the biorefinery. A large integrated gasification process with excess steam utilisation in a condensing turbine was beneficial only if grid electricity is produced at below 30% electrical efficiency. This paper presents a comparison between four gasification-based biorefineries integrated with a pulp and paper mill. It is a continuation of 'Transportation fuel production from gasified biomass integrated with a pulp and paper mill - Part A: Heat integration and system performance'. Synthesis into methanol, Fischer-Tropsch crude or synthetic natural gas, or electricity generation in a gas turbine combined cycle, were evaluated. The concepts were assessed in terms of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions and economic performance. Net annual profits were positive for all biofuel cases for an annuity factor of 0.1 in the year 2030; however, the results are sensitive to biofuel selling prices and CO 2,eq charge. Additionally, GHG emissions from grid electricity are highly influential on the results since all biofuel processes require external power. Credits for stored CO 2 might be necessary for processes to be competitive, i.e. storage of separated CO 2 from the syngas conditioning has an important role to play. Without CO 2 storage, the gas turbine case is better than, or equal to, biofuels regarding GHG emissions. Efficiency measures at the host mill prior to heat integration of a gasification process are beneficial from the perspective of GHG emissions, while having a negative impact on the economy. Abstract: Paper production is an energy-intensive process and accounted for about 9% of industrial energy demand in Germany in 2008. There have only been slow improvements in energy efficiency in the paper industry over the past twenty years. Policies can accelerate the progress made, but knowledge about the remaining efficiency potentials and their costs is a prerequisite for their success. We assess 17 process technologies to improve energy efficiency in the German pulp and paper industry up to 2035 using a techno-economic approach. These result in a saving potential of 34 TJ/a for fuels and 12 TJ/a for electricity, which equal 21% and 16% of fuel and electricity demand, respectively. The energy savings can be translated into mitigated CO2 emissions of 3 Mt. The larger part of this potential is found to be cost-effective from a firm''s perspective. The most influential technologies are heat recovery in paper mills and the use of innovative paper drying technologies. In conclusion, significant saving potentials are still available, but are limited if we assume that current paper production processes will not change radically. Abstract: In this study the possibilities of making a cost-effective heat exchanger retrofit in a simulated thermo mechanical pulp and paper mill are analysed using advanced composite curves. The use of advanced composite curves is a fairly new method developed in Chalmers University, and they have not previously been used to analyse a mechanical pulp and paper mill. The simulated mill used as an example in this study has one TMP (thermo mechanical pulping) line, one paper machine, debarking and auxiliary systems. The results show that the advanced curves give valuable information on the system and provide guidance as to where to look for improvement potential. Abstract: The Scandinavian mechanical pulp and paper industry has been facing great challenges during the past decades, mainly because of declining demand for newsprint, and higher prices on raw material and energy. One way of increasing profitability is to produce more value-added products besides the production of pulp and paper. In this study, integration potentials of three possible future biomass gasification-based energy mills with an existing thermo-mechanical pulp (TMP) mill, co-located with a sawmill, have been evaluated. The product gas was utilized for electricity production in a gas turbine, for production of methanol or for production of Fischer–Tropsch (FT) liquids. Integration of the energy mills showed good potential as the TMP mill constitutes a heat sink for which the excess heat from the energy mills can be utilized all year round. However, since there is little excess heat from the TMP mill at the required level to be utilized for biomass drying, for example, heat integration is typically one way. It has also been shown that integration of biomass gasification with a TMP mill results in larger CO2 emissions reduction than stand-alone operation. Still, compared to co-firing biomass in a coal power plant, the energy mills all have lower potentials for CO2 emissions reduction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper industry is, with about 6% of the total worldwide industrial energy use, an energy-intensive industry. The drying section is with approximately 50% the largest energy consumer in a paper mill, energy use in this section is mainly heat use. Several options to decrease heat use in conventional multi-cylinder drying sections are investigated, calculating the effect on energy use. Optimization measures include a) decreasing the amount of water evaporation by applying additives in higher consistencies and by lowering the water viscosity, b) decreasing the heat use of water evaporation by increasing the dew point temperature of the dryer and c) increasing the amount of heat recovery by using exhaust air to not only pre-heat the incoming air but also to increase process water temperatures. These could all be achieved by retrofitting and/or choosing different processing conditions in existing factories. The combined thermal heat saving potential due to the optimization actions is 1.3GJh/t paper (or 32% of the drying section’s heat use) as compared to the reference situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The success of any process improvement study depends on the quality of the available data and the way in which the plant-specific characteristics are incorporated in the applied conceptual models; in the context of process integration studies these issues are directly related to the rules followed during the data extraction stage. Improving energy efficiency in a pulp and paper Kraft mill requires the identification of the most promising heat recovery network retrofit projects. In a retrofit analysis using pinch technology/process integration methods, only the process streams associated to the existing heat exchangers and some outlet streams (such as wastewater/effluent streams and vents) with high potential for heat recovery are usually included, while the energy exchanged through non-isothermal stream mixing (NIM) or direct heat transfer (DHT) is often assumed fixed and is not considered in the analysis. Relaxing this assumption requires extracting more data to represent the DHT design configuration that exists in the plant. However, different data extraction options can be considered to represent the DHT configuration depending on the associated process/operation constraints. This work describes a systematic procedure to extract and analyse the impacts of DHT on the overall energy efficiency of a Kraft process with a specific focus on mixing along the pulp line and in water tanks. To identify the influence of digital transformation on energy consumption, this paper introduces digitalization and energy elements into the multi-sector energy efficiency analysis model. Furthermore, this paper empirically tests the influence of digital transformation on energy efficiency from the micro level. The results show that the digital transformation indeed improves the enterprises energy efficiency, in which enterprises with higher energy efficiency are more affected. The improvement effect of digital transformation on enterprise energy efficiency continues to increase over time. In comparison, digital transformation shows more effective improvement effect on energy efficiency in enterprises that substantive transformation priority, with same group and maturity stage. Mechanism analysis shows that digital transformation can improve the energy efficiency of enterprises by reducing costs, increasing income, improving production efficiency and promoting technological innovation. In addition, the digital inclusive finance, government subsidies, intellectual property protection and service industry opening show positive regulatory effects. This paper introduces an innovative decision support system for improving ship energy efficiency. It combines an engine optimization model and an artificial neural network (ANN). Real-time data regarding the ship and engine performance is obtained along a specific ship navigation, and an engine optimization model is built using Ricardo Wave software. This model is validated with high accuracy. Ship-specific parameters are derived, and fuel consumption is estimated using ANN models with different structures. The study identifies the most suitable ANN model with 1 hidden layer and 5 neurons based on error metric evaluation where the 0.99697 R2, 0.00035 RMSE, and 0.06470 MAPE scores are calculated. This approach offers a cost-effective solution for shipping companies to monitor critical engine parameters in real-time without investing in sensors or data collection systems. Thus, it contributes to dealing with the problem of the scarcity of analyzable data in the maritime literature, which is one of the significant issues in the papers related to energy efficiency, machine learning, and deep learning. The regenerator plays a crucial role in determining the energy efficiency of green liquid desiccant air-conditioning systems. This paper presents a novel air gap membrane distillation regenerator featuring heat recovery and portable water production. Based on a validated numerical model, performance evaluation of the regenerator combined with an external heat exchanger is conducted in terms of regeneration capacity (RC) and energy consumption (Q in). The comparison of flow patterns demonstrates that the counter-flow has a slightly higher RC , while the parallel-flow has a significantly lower Q in and is therefore preferable from the perspective of COP. The effects of key parameters including feed and coolant desiccant inlet temperatures (T f,in & T c,in), mass flow rate (m dil), membrane length (L), air gap thickness (δ ag), desiccant concentration (X dil) and solution heat exchanger effectiveness (ε she) on the performance are investigated. The results show that T f,in is the dominant factor on performance compared to T c,in and m dil , and increasing L leads to a marked growth in both RC and COP regardless of the raised Q in. Additionally, it is found that narrowing the air gap from 3 mm to 1 mm can improve RC and COP by 69.9 % and 50.1 % respectively. As for ε she , it has no influence on RC but remarkable impacts on Q in and COP. Moreover, the heat recovery by the coolant channel is proved to save nearly 8 % of energy input under the involved conditions. Finally, the NSGA-Ⅱ based multi-objective optimization is performed to obtain the Pareto front for maximizing RC and minimizing Q in. And the optimal solution through TOPSIS decision-making offers a RC = 975.8 g/h and a Q in = 1938 W. Paper presents a comparison between a traditional district heating system with conventional boilers as a source of heat and electricity purchases from power utilities and a low temperature DH system incorporating the CHP with organic Rankine Cycle providing electricity and local heat pump raising the temperature of the DH fluid to the required temperature in the dwelling, meaning that both heat and electricity are produced within the system. Additionally, such "island" system may feature or not the heat pump. Comparisons are made based on the results obtained using a developed simple analytical model enabling calculations of the efficiency of respective systems. The analyses have a general character and can be used in studies of complex networks however presented in the paper simple examples show merely the fundamental capabilities of the developed tool. The objective of the heat pump in the system is to increase temperature of hot water to the required level locally at the dwelling and provide the heating in such way, contrary to the traditional system, where water heating is considered by the use of electric heaters to increase parameters of water for central heating purposes and preparation of utility hot water. The average electricity consumption per capita in China still has significant room for growth. Under the current rigid residential electricity pricing, it is very important to study how factors other than price can promote electricity conservation among residents. This paper uses micro-survey data of 2018 and 2020 to analyze energy efficiency and the rebound effect through a stochastic energy demand frontier model, as well as to examine the role of news propaganda in this context. The research conclusions are as follows: (1) News propaganda promoting electricity saving can weaken the rebound effect of electricity use, which can lead to better electricity savings. (2) The energy efficiency of residential electricity has improved significantly compared to previous years, and the rebound effect has decreased. (3) Electricity prices have a negative impact on electricity consumption, while income, household size, home area, and extreme temperatures have a positive impact. Using the unique micro-data of industrial enterprises' Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions covering 58,725 enterprise-year observations, this paper investigates how digitalization affect energy efficiency. The empirical results show that regional digitalization can significantly promote the improvement of energy efficiency of industrial enterprises. Specifically, the result of PSM-DID method indicates that the impact of digitalization on energy efficiency is significantly enhanced by the "National innovative pilot cities" policy, while the dynamic result validates the continuity of industrial enterprises' energy efficiency. Moreover, regional digitalization has superior impact on enterprises within eastern region enterprises, the manufacturing sector, and with elevated liquidity and profitability levels. Finally, moderating effect suggests that technological innovation expand the positive impact of digitalization on enterprises' energy efficiency. Against the background of global warming, the low-carbon energy transition (LCET) has become one of the top concerns of governments around the world. Artificial intelligence (AI) is serving an increasingly relevant role in the energy sector by facilitating the development of cleaner energy. Thus, based on the panel data of 44 countries from 2000 to 2022, this study employs the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) and Common Correlated Effects Mean Group (CCEMG) methods to explore the impact of AI technology innovation on LCET. Moreover, we explore the moderating and spatial spillover effects between AI technology innovation and LCET. The main results show that: (1) AI technology innovation significantly promotes LCET. A 1 % increase in the AI technology innovation index causes a 0.176 % increase in the level of LCET using the AMG method, and a 0.198 % increase using the CCEMG method. (2) Financial incentives and energy efficiency effectively amplify the positive influence of AI technology innovation on LCET. (3) AI technology innovation generates discernible spillover effects on LCET through bilateral trade influence, particularly in countries with closer "trade distances." This study recommends that countries adequately strengthen AI technology resources to realize new situations for the synergistic development of technology and green energy. This paper explores whether the changes in energy intensity in Spain have led to improvements in the energy consumption levels or to a backfire effect offsetting the expected decrease. Jevon's paradox or backfire effect happens when a rebound higher than 100% causes energy efficiency improvement to raise energy consumption. To test Jevon's paradox or the backfire effect caused by energy efficiency actions, a Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index I (LMDI-I) is used for the Spanish economy. The period under consideration ranges from 2000 to 2015, when three national action plans were implemented. The main methodological novelty of this paper consists on to block the economic activity effect in a second decomposition round to better explore the effect of energy efficiency on energy consumption. As a whole, our results do not support Jevon's paradox for the sectors analyzed. However, they do warn about a possible backfire effect in the industry, transport and service sectors. The landscape of Demand-Side Energy Management (DSM) research is rapidly evolving, shaped by technological innovations and policy developments. This paper presents an exhaustive bibliometric analysis and methodological framework to explore the research trends within the DSM domain. By synthesizing data from Scopus and OpenAlex, we compile a comprehensive dataset of DSM publications that serve as the basis for our analysis. Through rigorous data acquisition and cleaning, we ensure the reliability and relevance of our dataset. We employ state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs) and topic modeling techniques, including GPT and BERTopic, to perform semantic analysis and uncover thematic structures within the literature. Statistical analysis of the literature dataset reveals a steady increase in DSM publications, with significant contributions from prestigious journals and institutions worldwide. We observe that articles are the predominant publication type, while reviews often cite more references and receive higher citation counts. The distribution of publications over time indicates a growing interest in DSM, particularly since 2014. Geographical mapping of institutions highlights key regions contributing to DSM research, with notable outputs from Europe, North America, and East Asia. Coupled with citation network analysis, our approach reveals the influential works and emerging trends that define the scientific progression of DSM research. Our unsupervised topic modeling, powered by BERTopic, clusters the publications into distinct themes, while our advanced visualization techniques using UMAP and t-SNE provide insights into the semantic space of DSM literature. The resulting thematic classification is presented in a hierarchical structure, offering a comprehensive understanding of the field's focus areas. Our citation network analysis, utilizing force-directed graph computation and edge-bundling algorithms, maps the interconnectivity and impact of research contributions, providing a dynamic view of the field's evolution. This study not only charts the landscape of DSM research but also offers a methodological blueprint for future bibliometric analyses. With the facilitation of agricultural modernization, China's agricultural energy consumption continues to rise. This paper empirically tests the agricultural energy rebound effect and its influencing factors in China during 1999–2020. It is believed that the improvement of energy efficiency has not led to the expected energy-saving effect in agriculture due to the "Jevons paradox" of energy efficiency and energy consumption. The average energy efficiency of China's agricultural energy consumption was 0.446, and the average energy rebound effect was 68.9 %. The level of agricultural mechanization, the effective irrigated area of farmland and agricultural investment have a positive impact on the rebound effect of agricultural energy, and the direct effects are 0.062, 0.008 and 0.064, respectively, while agricultural labor force and energy price have a negative impact on the rebound effect of agricultural energy. In particular, technology spillover and scale spillover led by agricultural technology progress have strong negative space spillover effect. As it is argued, 1 % of agricultural technology progress can reduce 3.5 % of agricultural energy rebound effect in surrounding areas. —This paper proposes two real-time energy-oriented driving strategies to minimize the energy consumption for electric vehicles on highways with varying slopes. First, a novel strategy, called normalized-energy consumption minimization strategy (NCMS), adopts a designed kinetic energy conversion factor to convert the vehicle kinetic energy change into the equivalent battery energy consumption. By minimizing the total normalized energy consumption, the energy-orientated vehicle control sequence is calculated. In addition, a logic car-following algorithm is developed to enhance NCMS for avoiding collisions with the potential preceding vehicle on the journey. Second, an improved model predictive control (MPC) is developed with a hierarchical framework, which achieves a balance between optimization and computational efficiency. In the upper level, a global, coarse-grained, iterative dynamic programming is employed to penalize the MPC terminal state, while the lower level performs online rolling optimization of the vehicle within a moderate time step. Thirdly, the performance of the proposed driving strategies is verified through a traffic simulation to evaluate the energy efficiency improvement and processor computation time compared to dynamic programming and constant speed strategy. This paper delves into the potential impact of a changing climate on the energy performance of European buildings. Research aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of current energy requirements focusing on the envelope, considering existing regulations in national policies. Energy simulations are conducted at 94 locations across the European Union to cover the climatic variability and Koppen climate classification. The research analyzes future climate scenarios for the years 2030, 2050, and 2070, using three different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5, 8.5). According to a comprehensive analysis of heating, cooling, and overall energy performance, climate plays a significant role in buildings' energy balance. In moderately cool climate countries, the demand for air conditioning is projected to decrease in the years ahead. Conversely, in countries with a warm climate, there is a projected increase in the overall energy demand. Consequently, a revision of current energy regulations should be a priority. Abstract With the revolution of the traditional economic and social pattern based on centralized fossil energy consumption, the regional integrated energy system (RIES) has gained rapid development in recent years for achieving higher energy efficiency. This paper expands the Demand Response (DR) concept to the RIES and presents an optimal operation model of RIES considering the DR mechanism on the energy price. In this paper, a comprehensive DR strategy combining energy price and different loads is firstly developed to exploit the demand flexibility of RIES in the DR model established. Based on the DR modeling of the RIES, an operation optimization model with environmental, economic benefits and energy supply reliability as objective functions has been firstly established in detail. Secondly, a complete scheduling scheme is built based on the energy consumption characteristics and system operation characteristic of the integrated energy system. The model presented could reduce the cost of system without causing a significant amount of environmental pollution, and improve the energy efficiency of the RIES efficiently. Besides, the scheduling strategy proposed could also provide support for the operation strategy of integrated energy system under the energy development. Industry poses one of the biggest challenges in the renewable energy transition. In this paper, fossil fuels in the European industrial sector are replaced by renewable energy using a novel tool, IndustryPLAN, a planning tool for the assessment of national industrial sectors. In a bottom-up approach, each industry sub-sector is addressed with energy efficiency and fossil fuel replacement measures based on best available and innovative technologies, and in a top-down approach, the fuel and electricity consumption per country is analysed and decarbonised. The results indicate that: 1. Known technologies can decarbonise most of the industrial sector; 2. Costs and efficiencies are improved by energy savings and electrification; 3. Limiting bioenergy consumption is a critical challenge, emphasising the key role of energy savings and electrification, and the alternative of using hydrogen or hydrogen-based electrofuels will make the transition more expensive and induce energy losses. A full transition to renewable energy and a decarbonised industry sector may be possible before 2050, however, this requires that all investments are sustainable from 2030 onwards and that grid electricity is fully decarbonised. Abstract: A bottom-up methodological framework was developed and applied for the period 1985–2002, to selected manufacturing sub-sectors in Greece namely, food, beverages and tobacco, iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, non-metallic minerals and paper. Disaggregate physical data were aggregated according to their specific energy consumption (SEC) values and physical energy efficiency indicators were estimated. The Logarithmic Mean Divisia index method was also used and the effects of the production, structure and energy efficiency to changes in sub-sectoral manufacturing energy use were further assessed. Primary physical energy efficiency improved by 28% for the iron and steel and by 9% for the non-metallic minerals industries, compared to the base year 1990. For the food, beverages and tobacco and the paper sub-sectors, primary efficiency deteriorated by 20% and by 15%, respectively; finally electricity efficiency deteriorated by 7% for the non-ferrous metals. Sub-sectoral energy use is mainly driven by production output and energy efficiency changes. Sensitivity analysis showed that alternative SEC values do not influence the results whereas the selected base year is more critical for this analysis. Significant efficiency improvements refer to “heavy” industry; “light” industry needs further attention by energy policy to modernize its production plants and improve its efficiency. Multistage centrifugal pumps are widely used, and improving their efficiency is an indispensable part of energy conservation. A multi-objective optimization method combining experimental design, surrogate model, and optimization algorithm is proposed to re-design impellers and diffusers for improving pump performance. In the paper, nine variables were selected by the Plackett–Burman design with the head and minimum efficiency index (MEI) as the optimization objectives. The Gaussian process regression (GPR) was used to establish the surrogate model, and multi-objective optimization of the impeller and diffuser was carried out by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). The optimization results show that head and efficiency at the designed point 1.0 Q d increased by 8.8% and 2.8% respectively, and C MEI decreased by 1.34%. Meanwhile, the energy loss and flow characteristics of the original and optimization models were analyzed with the entropy production theory. Compared with the original model, the energy loss was reduced, and the flow in the interaction area between the impeller and diffuser becomes more stable for the optimized model. Thermal grids will play a key role in the development of local energy communities and the achievement of 100% renewable societies. Such systems allow excess heat produced by distributed producers through renewable energy sources (also referred to as "thermal prosumers") to be shared among other consumers characterized by high heat demand or who still depend on fossil fuels. However, to achieve more reliable results when performing energy analyses, it is of utmost importance to develop models of prosumers' substations, where technical details (e.g., type of connections, heat exchangers, valves, etc.) and controllers are accounted for. Starting from the layout of a bidirectional substation for a thermal energy network proposed in the literature, this paper proposes a dynamic model that replicates the experimental setup in the TRNSYS environment. Validation results show a good matching between simulation and experiments in terms of dynamic behavior and energy balance. To show the capabilities of the proposed model, a prosumer with heat available from 205 m2 solar thermal collectors is considered as a case study. The analysis is performed by assuming two locations characterized by different irradiation values, i.e., Palermo (Italy) and Berlin (Germany). The results show that exchanging the excess heat produced on-site with a heating network allows the solar collectors to reach peak heat production, which is 130 kW and 110 kW for Palermo and Berlin, respectively. The surplus heat sold to the network is equal to 66% and 29% of the total energy exchange within the substation for Palermo and Berlin, respectively. Conversely, the self-consumption of the produced heat accounts for 21.2% and 30.6%, respectively. The main objective of this paper is to propose the blowdown heat recovery system using a steam dryer. A flash tank is used to reduce blowdown water pressure and generate flash steam. Flash steam is supplied to the steam dryer to decrease fuel moisture content. Exhaust vapor vented from the steam dryer is also used to increase air temperature in an air heater. Furthermore, due to decreased fuel moisture content and increased air temperature, the exhaust flue gas temperature may be decreased by increasing the air heater surface area in the boiler. This method of blowdown heat recovery has never been proposed before. Therefore, it may be considered as knowledge gap that is worth an investigation. The use of blowdown heat for steam drying is compared with the use of blowdown heat for feed water heating. Simulation results show that using blowdown heat for steam drying results in a significantly larger net power output. Environmental degradation has become one of the major challenges facing the global community. This paper aims to explore the more effective options to combat environmental degradation by investigating the linearity and nonlinearity (trade openness set as a threshold variable) of energy efficiency, natural gas, renewable energy and ecological footprint. To this end, linear and non-linear panel models were constructed using panel data from 60 countries. The results of the linear analysis show that improving energy efficiency, and increasing the consumption of natural gas and renewable energy are conducive to inhibiting environmental degradation. Energy efficiency has the most significant negative correlation with ecological footprint, followed by renewable energy, and then natural gas, implying that improving energy efficiency and developing renewable energy is a more effective strategy to combat environmental degradation. The results of the nonlinear analysis show that there are threshold effects of trade openness between energy efficiency and ecological footprint, and between renewable energy and ecological footprint. The negative impact of both renewable energy and energy efficiency on the ecological footprint increases when trade openness exceeds the threshold. This suggests that, in terms of curbing environmental degradation, enhancing trade openness may further increase the negative impacts of energy efficiency and renewable energy on ecological footprint. Current oceanic hydrate research mainly focuses on its exploitation, but the subsequent storage and transportation of recovered gas is also necessary. To accelerate its commercial application and clarify the potential of liquefaction after hydrate exploitation, a rigorous simulation modelling was firstly conducted on the depressurization exploitation of hydrate coupled with recovered gas liquefaction in this paper. The energy performance was evaluated by energy consumption and efficiency analysis. The energy efficiency of the gas and liquid production process, liquefaction process, and the key influence factors of the whole process were studied separately. Results show that the energy efficiency ratio for depressurization exploitation reaches between 4.9 and 19.4, while that for the whole system of hydrate exploitation and liquefaction is only between 1.3 and 2.7 considering recovered gas combustion for power generation. The energy efficiency ratio of the whole system increases to between 2.6 and 4.3 powered by offshore wind farm. The largest energy efficiency reduction is up to 77.8% after recovered gas liquefaction compared with exploitation process. Therefore the storage process with lower energy consumption should be prioritized or the energy consumption should be optimized for the storage and transportation process after hydrate exploitation. Combining cost-optimal solutions to reach nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) in compliance with European policies is an ongoing challenge. Energy consumption can be reduced evaluating different configurations at the design stage and implementing the most appropriate solutions according to the building and the location. This paper develops a simulation-based optimization framework of cost-optimal choices and energy efficiency measures for new buildings. It combines energy and cost simulations using a sequential search technique to find the most effective combination of energy efficiency and renewable energy measures starting from a base configuration. The model is applied to a residential building prototype, taking into consideration hourly climatic data, construction methods, cost data and energy consumption. A cost database and a library of potential measures, related to envelope, appliances and systems, have been established and used within the optimization process. The potential impact of climate change on the estimated cooling loads has been included in the calculations. The paper shows the feasibility of European requirements for new NZEBs located in different cities. It describes how to best achieve the NZEB design at the lowest cost in 14 locations across Europe. Results highlight how the cost-optimal measures vary with climate and how in each location final selected options differ. Insulation and building tightness appear essential in colder climates, while efficient appliances and lighting are key measures in warmer locations. A key finding of the research is that a source energy reduction of 90% and beyond is feasible for new constructions in all locations. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled shipping systems adopts the boil-off gas (BOG) re-liquefaction process to maintain the pressure of storage tank and to minimize methane loss. However, most of previous studies on on-board BOG re-liquefaction process were made for large-scale applications of LNG carriers. This paper focuses on small-scale BOG re-liquefaction process used for LNG fuelled ship. In order to improve energy efficiency of BOG re-liquefaction, process design and optimization study are carried out for the refrigeration process in LNG fuelled ship. The reverse Brayton cycle using nitrogen as a refrigerant fluid is selected and two different configurations without using cryogenic compressor are considered, namely, i) re-liquefaction of BOG feed stream without compression and ii) pre-heating of BOG feed to use compressor operating in ambient temperature. Thermodynamic analysis provides conceptual insights into the key operating variables on the performance of BOG re-liquefaction process, while energy-efficient strategy for achieving minimum power consumptions can be systematically obtained through process optimization. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to understand how the variation of operating conditions affects on system performance of BOG re-liquefaction process under different design conditions and constraints. This paper reports the results of analysis of technical and economic parameters on the specific cost of electricity production. The use of a particular technology determines the value of the investment needed for the construction of a power plant, its energy efficiency, internal electrical load of the power plant and its annual operating time. Besides, this cost is considerably dependent on the interest rate on the capital, fuel prices and environmental charges as well as, equally importantly, their variability in time. The variability in the prices of energy carriers and their mutual relations are inevitable for a number of reasons. As shown in the paper the change of the technical parameters in the range of the possible boundaries in a particular technology cannot considerably reduce the specific cost of electricity production. The reduction of the current price relation between gas and three-times cheaper coal (calculated per specific unit of energy) can considerably improve the profitability of the use of the gas-steam technology. This paper analyzes the energy consumption of buildings considering the uncertainty of structural and environmental parameters. To this end, two-point estimate method (2PEM) is used to model the uncertainties. EnergyPlus software is used in this paper to evaluate the energy consumption, the thermal comfort, and the energy cost of a building. We examine the proposed method in a retail building to show the effectiveness of the method in comparison with the Monte-Carlo Simulation and deterministic methods. The results show that the 2PEM method although may cause a bit accuracy loss, it can considerably reduce the simulation time by more than 97%. The energy benchmarking has been recognised as an effective analytical methodology and a significant management tool that helps to improve the efficiency and performance of the energy utilisation. To overcome these challenges, based on previous studies we propose two significant rules of energy benchmarking in machining systems contributing to the development of the energy benchmarking and application. The paper addresses the issue of the transition from a traditional electrical system without automation to a newer active and smart system allowing the possibility of implementing Demand Side Management policies, for little islands not supplied by the main grid. In particular, the paper focuses on two main topics related to the definition of: • an effective control, monitoring and communication system as a tool for the full exploitation of the opportunities given by Demand Response policies; • some solutions for the automation of the end-users’ electrical installations, in order to offer to the utility flexibility to be used for the improvement of the generation and distribution efficiency. After a brief discussion on the international regulatory framework on automation and ICT applications for power systems, the paper presents a feasibility study, based on the characteristics of the island of Lampedusa, of a hierarchical architecture of a suitable control system and of some DSM enabling solutions for residential end-users. Both energy and water are important resources for human and should be investigated in an integrated way. The paper examines the implications of improving energy efficiency for water resources to contribute to the understanding of energy-water nexus. The paper first develops a mathematical model to link energy efficiency and water withdrawals and consumption. Using the model and the UK energy and water data, the paper then investigates the implications of improving energy efficiency of thermal power technology for freshwater, tidal and sea water in the UK. Results show that when the energy efficiency increases averagely by 10%, the total water withdrawals decrease by 1.65 × 10 6 Megaliter (ML) per year, and the total water consumption reduces by 2.89 × 10 4 ML per year. The saved freshwater withdrawals account for 0.43% of total public water supply in England and Wales in 2013, and could support 138,462 households. The water resources have different sensitivity to the improvement of energy efficiency. The sea water withdrawals are the most sensitive to the improvement of energy efficiency, followed by tidal sea water withdrawals and freshwater withdrawals. Results provide significant informative implications for energy-water nexus, and suggests that it is time to consider improving energy efficiency to address the emerging energy and water challenges. In this paper, economic and environmental impacts of energy efficiency programs associated with new and existing buildings are evaluated for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). In particular, the analysis considers optimized designs for new buildings as well as different energy retrofit programs for existing buildings are considered in the bottom-up analysis using archetypical building energy models located in five sites representing a wide range of KSA climates. In particular, the analysis presented in this paper provides specific estimations to the extent of the energy and demand savings that could be achieved in the building sector even under highly subsidized energy prices. It is found that even a basic energy retrofit program using low-cost energy efficiency measures implemented to the existing building stock can provide significant economic and environmental benefits. Indeed, a level 1 energy efficiency retrofit program targeting only the existing residential building stock could reduce electricity consumption by 10,054 GWh/year and peak demand by 2290 MW and carbon emission by 7.611 million tons/year. Life cycle impacts in buildings includes operational carbon for heating, cooling, hot water, ventilation, lighting, on the one hand, and embodied carbon for material supply, production, transport, construction and disassembly, on the other. Improved operational carbon has increased the percentage of embodied carbon in the total life cycle of buildings. Kuwait is looking at enhancing the sustainability of its built environment, as there is an urgent need to expand and build new cities. This research analyses the sustainability of the Middle Eastern built environment in order to provide the most appropriate strategies to respond to this demand. Therefore, this paper looks at different alternatives to the current construction methodologies, such as cement replacement in concrete or rammed earth structural systems. The impact of three envelope and energy upgrades on the whole life cycle environmental performance of a Middle Eastern residential neighborhood is evaluated. Simulations are performed through urban modeling, resulting in a distribution of the embodied and operational impacts of buildings for the different design options. The Korean government has given efforts to reduce green-house gas emissions. In order to avoid the monolithic system that only focuses on reducing the emission without considering operational environments of firms, the government should encourage respective firms to improve their energy efficiency which wastes less energy but produces maximum economic revenue. This paper employed a DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) model to measure energy efficiency of energy intensive manufacturing firms in Korea. Identifying and comparing the difference in efficiency score by using the simplified single-stage DEA model is not sufficient to give governments and firms meaningful policy implications related to energy efficiency improvement. To compensate for this insufficiency, this study extended the single-stage model into a two-stage model that includes two efficiency measures: pure energy efficiency which is only for energy-related process and economy efficiency which is for the pursuit of profit, to reach the improvement of total energy efficiency. By using the two-stage DEA model, it has identified that the difference from overall energy efficiency is not caused by pure energy efficiency but rather by economy efficiency. In this paper, a methanol production process with high thermodynamic efficiency and a low production cost is presented. The proposed process is based on steam methane reforming, in which carbon dioxide (CO 2) captured from a power plant flue gas is employed to improve the stoichiometric number, methanol efficiency, and carbon efficiency and increase CO 2 conversion. In addition to the sensitivity analysis, comprehensive technical, economic, and environmental analyses are performed. Furthermore, the obtained results of this paper are compared to those of previous studies. A parametric study showed that the optimum steam-to-methane ratio is 3.75, and the optimum flow rate for CO 2 utilization is 140 kmol/h. From the economic point of view, it is demonstrated that the total annual cost is 11,799,484 USD, and the total production cost rate is 0.1 $/kg. The paper evaluates the potential energy efficiency benefits for dynamic sliding exterior shades suitable for windows of both new and existing buildings. In particular, the analysis outlined in the paper summarizes the energy performance of dynamic sliding shades when applied to windows for apartment units located in various US climates. A series of sensitivity analyses is performed using a detailed whole-building simulation coupled with modeling techniques of dynamic envelope systems to determine the optimal positions for the dynamic sliding shades to minimize the annual demand for US housing units. Several operation strategies are evaluated using continuous and stepped settings of the positions for the dynamic sliding shades using monthly, daily, and hourly adjustment frequencies. The results of the analyses indicate that the dynamic shades have significant energy efficiency potential for all US climates and design conditions with annual savings in HVAC energy end-use of over 50% especially in hot and mild climates. Hydrogen is a key raw material for many chemical processes and a clean fuel for various power generation strategies. Coal-to-hydrogen (CTH) conversion is an alternative way to produce hydrogen that is applicable to the abundant coal reserves in China. The use of fossil energy has contributed to severe environmental problems, which drives the development of potential hydrogen production processes. Biomass is a promising renewable energy as well as an attractive resource for producing hydrogen, and it may address some of these environmental problems. In this paper, the simulation results of the biomass-to-hydrogen (BTH) and CTH processes were validated using available experimental data from the literature. Based on the simulation results, a techno-economic analysis was conducted from the viewpoints of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The techno-economic analysis included determination of the energy efficiency, material consumption, total capital investment, production cost and carbon tax. The energy efficiencies of BTH and CTH were 37.88% and 37.82%, respectively. The BTH process had a larger raw material consumption and total capital investment (TCI) than the CTH process. However, the BTH process had a lower production cost and GHG emissions than the CTH process. The results of energy analyses of the BTH and CTH processes showed that the energy efficiency can be improved from a thermodynamic perspective. Oil and gas offshore platforms present similar structural designs and include operations such as separation, compression and pumping. However, they handle large variations in the production of hydrocarbons and water over time. They may also follow different modes of operation depending on the field characteristics and fluid properties. It is therefore not possible to suggest a standard layout of an offshore platform that can be widely implemented in distinct petroleum regions. The oil and gas processing plant should be designed adequately to maximise the hydrocarbon production and minimise the power, heating and cooling demands. The utility plant should be designed appropriately to minimise the fuel consumption and cover the energy needs in all production phases. The present paper presents a generic methodology that addresses these challenges and builds on a combination of process simulation, energy analysis and optimisation routines. Possible platform layouts are sized, evaluated and ranked, based on preliminary estimates of the production profiles and petroleum properties. This methodology is applied to three case studies, derived from actual field data from Norway and Brazil, with different field conditions, fluid compositions (e.g. negligible, medium and high CO 2 contents of the well-fluids) and operational requirements (e.g. gas export, injection and lift). Energy efficiency is one of the main requirements that buildings must satisfy nowadays, both when designing new buildings or when major renovation takes place. The main issues that need to be considered in designing energy efficient buildings are: reduction of energy consumption generated from fossil fuels and reduction of environment pollution. Building envelope is the most responsible architectural element of the building that impacts thermal comfort and energy balance. Besides thermal properties of the envelope, equipment for heating, cooling and lighting influence largely on energy consumption in buildings. From the design point of view, the analysis of various facade scenarios, in terms of their contribution to reducing energy consumption, is crucial and necessary for each specific case and climate. This paper presents the estimation of energy performances of different scenarios of the hypothetical models of façade design, in case of an office building in Belgrade climate conditions. For the analysis, the model of the typical office was created and three various facade concepts were applied. Methodological approach entails three steps: design of different facade concepts - models, numerical energy simulations of the models and comparison of the results. For each of the three shading concepts, the following scenarios have been created: the basic scenario without shadings, and three scenarios of different facade design solutions related to types of shading devices. Assessment of the scenarios includes consideration of energy demands for heating and cooling, reduction of energy consumption for cooling by implementation of different shading devices and comparison of the results. The results of the simulations show how much the various alternatives of shadings contribute to the reduction of total energy demands, and how much the application of shadings affects the reduction of environmental pollution. The design method, as well as the results, can generally be applicable for the design of new and renovation of existing office buildings, both in Belgrade and in places with similar climatic conditions. • Buildings with glazed envelope on the southern facades have large window heat gains. • Shadings contribute to the reduction of energy demand in glazed envelope buildings. • Horizontal shadings are the most efficient when placed in the upper zone of window. • Vertical louvres on south facade are the most efficient when oriented west or south. • Combination of horizontal and vertical shadings shows the best energy reduction results. The energy retrofitting of residential stock is not always straightforward where heritage protected housing is concerned. In southern Europe, many examples built under the Modern Movement codes are now obsolete in terms of energy efficiency. The aim of this paper is to assess the potential for improvement of comfort conditions and energy efficiency in Mediterranean heritage residential buildings, through the incorporation of passive strategies in keeping with preserving heritage values. Long-term monitoring and field tests in representative flats of the case-study building were carried out and, focusing on a single example, adaptive comfort equations were used to assess results. The passive strategies considered are the thermal isolation of the air cavities of walls, changing window frames, optimizing window glazing, and setting up regular mechanical ventilation rates for indoor air changes. The energy conversion efficiency of coal utilization is a focal point in modern energy management practices and in academic literature. This paper explores life cycle energy efficiency of coal (LEEC), which encompasses six distinct stages from the design of coal mines to the comprehensive reuse of resources. First, the study analyzes improvements to the evaluation of efficiencies in energy systems. Secondly, it proposes a multi-stage energy efficiency analysis and constructs an innovative LEEC model for coal exploitation and utilization. Thirdly, the energy efficiency of coal exploitation and utilization was evaluated, and found that total efficiency in China increased from 33.11% in 2010 to 37.69% in 2014, saving 126 Mtce of energy. Finally, this study found that mine design is the most important stage in improving energy efficiency, followed by the coal processing stage. Moreover, we found that coal processing has an indirect contribution to other stages in the life cycle utilization of coal, such as reducing transportation capacity. The primary research contribution is the development of a comprehensive LEEC model for the entire life cycle of coal, rather than just single-stage evaluation. The deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) is rapidly progressing worldwide, and energy efficiency is an important indicator for both the economy and the environment. It is necessary to verify whether EVs are more energy efficient than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However, studies have yet to evaluate the energy efficiency of EVs using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. To fill this research gap, this paper evaluated the energy efficiency of EVs for road passenger transportation using a slacks-based measure (SBM) approach in six European countries from 2012 to 2018. EVs have been separated from the entire transport sector and compared to ICE vehicles. In the case of EVs that use electricity as fuel, the primary energy supply must be used as energy input to reflect conversion loss during power generation. The primary energy supply was calculated by applying the power generation efficiency of each country for use as an energy input to reflect conversion loss. EVs were more energy efficient than ICE vehicles in four out of six countries but less energy efficient in two countries. Optimal design of building envelopes/HVAC systems and free cooling strategies are today necessary to reduce energy, economic and environmental impact of telecommunication, electricity distribution, or electric transportations infrastructures. To this aim, designers and operators require advanced techniques and tools. Target of this paper is to present the development of a simulation model for assessing and optimizing cooling performance of new/existing infrastructures to be designed/refurbished from the energy point of view. The model is implemented in a computer tool to assess the related potential benefits of different energy saving technologies/strategies and optimize different objective functions. By the presented approach new design and operating criteria are developed by varying all the occurring boundary conditions (weather, temperature limitations, electricity tariffs, etc.). To show the capability and suitability of the proposed approach, a case study concerning the equipment cooling of a railway substation is developed. The analysis is conducted for different Italian climates, obtaining remarkable energy savings. Specifically, by optimizing free cooling operation and thermal insulation the cooling energy consumption can be decreased up to 80% and 10%, respectively. By an energy refurbishment of all the Italian railway substations an annual electricity cost reduction due to equipment conditioning of about 0.5 M€ can be achieved, 47% lower. • Distributed building infrastructures have great potential of reducing cooling energy consumption. • Dynamic simulation is a paramount tool to design enhanced energy management strategies. • Free cooling contributes to 50% reduction of energy demand for equipment cooling. • Operational energy and use of material can be reduced with optimal envelope design. • The study proposes design criteria aimed at increasing energy efficiency at the infrastructure level. The PV/T hybrid system has irreplaceable advantages in the comprehensive utilization of energy because of its capability to simultaneously generate heat and power. A heat pipe PV/T system is often used in cold area duo to its high energy efficiency and anti-frost properties. While most of existing systems only focus on the hot water supply, rarely involving in the function of space heating. In this paper, a novel dual-condensers heat pipe system is proposed to extend its energy supply functions and application areas. This study aims to establish a mathematical model of the proposed system, and analyze the performance of the system in different climatic region cities. Three cities in different climate zones were selected as boundary conditions for the analysis. The numerical result shows that in the hot water mode the system's electrical efficiency is 13.6%, 13.3% and 13.5%, and the total efficiency is 56.1%, 59.7% and 60.6%, respectively. In space heating mode, the system's electrical efficiency is 14.7%, 14.8% and 14.8%, and the total efficiency is 55.4%, 55.4% and 51.1%, respectively. In Italy, the economic support scheme for high-efficiency cogeneration annually provides tradable White Certificates to new constructed or refurbished high-efficiency cogeneration plants over a period of 10 years, proportionally to their annual primary energy saving. In contrast to the legislation currently in force, which assumes the power grid efficiency constant, this paper aims at assessing the adoption of a time-dependent approach, based on the use of the thermoelectric-based power grid efficiency, for evaluating the primary energy saving ensured by high-efficiency cogeneration as well as the relating economic incentives. The case study being analysed includes two 5.5 kW el micro-cogenerators installed in Naples (South Italy). Beyond the conventional, three scenarios have been outlined, depending on the time accuracy adopted (yearly, monthly and hourly basis). Starting from 2016, the scenarios have been replicated over the ten-year incentive period. In particular, the annual average thermoelectric-based power grid efficiency has been forecasted from 2021 to 2025. Following the innovative approach proposed in this study, the White Certificates would have increased by 9.2% in 2016, by 6.1% in 2017 and by 6.1% in 2018 too, thus fostering the achievement of the targets about high-efficiency cogeneration at national level. • In Italy, White Certificates are recognized to high-efficiency cogeneration. • The power grid efficiency affects the primary energy saving of cogeneration. • Hourly thermoelectric-based power grid efficiency indicators vary over time. • Increased time-accuracy means improved meaningfulness of results.
