High speed and heavy loads have become more prevalent in the traction power supply system recently. To ensure system operating stability, better power quality, and sufficient power capacity, improvements are needed over the conventional traction system. Inspired by the concept of a microgrid (MG), an AC co-phase traction MG system was proposed. Substations were connected to the traction grid as distributed generators operate in islanded mode. Droop control was adopted as the primary control to stabilize the system&rsquo, s operating frequency and voltage. Considering the operating features of the substation and locomotive load, a de-centralized secondary control strategy was proposed for AC co-phase traction MG system operation with enhanced resiliency. The proposed control strategy could increase system stability and prevent circulation currents between substations. Moreover, the proposed de-centralized coordination between substations does not rely on communication, which promotes the system&rsquo, s &ldquo, plug-and-play&rdquo, functionality. Stability analysis was undertaken and the proposed controller was proved to be exponentially stable. The dynamic response of the proposed controller was validated using comprehensive case studies in MATLAB/Simulink.

Due to the wide usability of thermoelectric generators (TEG) in the industry and research fields, it is plausible that mismatching conditions are present on the thermal surfaces of a TEG device, which induces negative-performance effects due to uneven surface temperature distributions. For this reason, the objective of this study is to characterize numerically the open-circuit electric output voltage of a TEG device when a mismatching condition is applied to both the cold and hot sides of the selected N and P-type semiconductor material Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3. A validated numerical simulation paired with a parametric study is conducted using the Thermal-Electric module of ANSYS 2020 R1, for which different thermal boundary and mismatching conditions are applied while considering the temperature-dependent thermoelectrical properties of the N and P-type material. The results show an inverse relationship between the open-circuit voltage and the mismatching temperature difference. When a mismatching condition is applied on the hot side of the TEG device, the temperature-dependent electrical resistance has lower values, deriving in higher voltage results (linear tendency) compared to a mismatching condition applied to the cold side (non-linear tendency).

This article proposes a new passive islanding detection technique for inverter-based distributed generation (DG) in microgrids based on local synchrophasor measurements. The proposed method utilizes the voltage and current phasors measured at the DG connection point (point of connection, PoC). In this paper, the rate of change of voltages and the ratio of the voltage and current magnitudes (VoI index) at the PoC are monitored using micro-phasor measurement units. The developed local measurements based decentralized islanding detection technique is based on the VoI index in order to detect any kind of utility grid frequency fluctuations or oscillations and distinguishing them from islanding condition. The simulation studies confirm that the proposed scheme is accurate, robust, fast, and simple to implement for inverter-based DGs.

A smart monitoring system capable of detecting and classifying the health conditions of MV (Medium Voltage) underground cables is presented in this work. Using the analysis technique proposed here, it is possible to prevent the occurrence of catastrophic failures in medium voltage underground lines, for which it is generally difficult to realize maintenance operations and carry out punctual inspections. This prognostic method is based on Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) and can be used online during normal network operation, resulting in a minimally invasive tool. In order to obtain the good results shown in the simulation section, it is necessary to develop a lamped equivalent circuit of the network branch under consideration. The standard π-model is used in this paper to analyse sections of a medium voltage cable and the parameter variations with temperature are used to classify the state of health of the line. In fact, the variation of the electrical parameters produces a corresponding variation in the frequency response. The proposed system is based on the use of a complex neural network with feedforward architecture. It processes the frequency response, allowing the classification of the cable conditions with an accuracy higher than 90%.

With increased usage, individual batteries within the battery pack will begin to show disparate voltage and State of Charge (SOC) profiles, which will impact the time at which batteries become balanced. Commercial battery management systems (BMSs), used in electric vehicles (EVs) and microgrids, typically send out signals suggesting removal of individual batteries or entire packs to prevent thermal runaway scenarios. To reuse these batteries, this paper presents an analysis of an off-the-shelf Orion BMS with a constrained cycling approach to assess the voltage and SOC balancing and thermal performances of such near-to-second life batteries. A scaled-down pack of series-connected batteries in 6s1p and 6s2p topologies are cycled through a combination of US06 drive and constant charge (CC) profiles using an OPAL-RT real-time Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator. These results are compared with those obtained from the Matlab/Simulink model to present the error incurred in the simulation environment. Results suggest that the close-to-second life batteries can be reused if operated in a constrained manner and that a scaled-up battery pack topology reduces incurred error.

In this study, an optimization procedure was proposed for the magnetic component of an integrated transformer applied in a center-tap phase-shifted full-bridge converter. To accommodate high power&ndash, density 0demand, a transformer and an output inductor were integrated into a magnetic component to reduce the volume of the magnetic material and the primary and secondary windings of the transformer were wound on the magnetic legs to reduce conduction loss attributable to the alternating-current resistor. With a focus on the integrated transformer applied in a phase-shifted full-bridge converter, circuit operation in each time interval was analyzed, and a design procedure was established for the integrated magnetic component. In addition, the manner in which output inductance was affected by the mutual inductance between the transformer and the output inductor in the integrated transformer during various operation intervals was discussed and, to minimize circuit loss, a design optimization procedure for the magnetic core was proposed. Finally, the integrated transformer was applied in a phase-shifted full-bridge converter to achieve an input voltage of 400 V, an output voltage of 12 V, output power of 1.7 kW, an output frequency of 80 kHz, and a maximum conversion efficiency of 96.7%.

A new silicon carbide (SiC) planar-gate insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is proposed and comprehensively investigated in this paper. Compared to the traditional SiC planar-gate IGBT, the new IGBT boasts a much stronger injection enhancement effect, which leads to a low on-state voltage (VON) approaching the SiC trench-gate IGBT. The strong injection enhancement effect is obtained by a heavily doped carrier storage layer (CSL), which creates a hole barrier under the p-body to hinder minority carriers from being extracted away through the p-body. A p-shield is located at the bottom of the CSL and coupled to the p-body of the IGBT by an embedded p-MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors). In off-state, the heavily doped CSL is shielded by the p-MOSFET clamped p-shield. Thus, a high breakdown voltage is maintained. At the same time, owing to the planar-gate structure, the proposed IGBT does not suffer the high oxide field that threatens the long-term reliability of the trench-gate IGBT. The turn-off characteristics of the new IGBT are also studied, and the turn-off energy loss (EOFF) is similar to the conventional planar-gate IGBT. Therefore, the new IGBT achieves the benefits of both the conventional planar-gate IGBT and the trench-gate IGBT, i.e., a superior VON-EOFF trade-off and a low oxide field.

Renewable Distributed Generation (RDG), when connected to a Distribution Network (DN), suffers from power quality issues because of the distorted currents drawn from the loads connected to the network over generation of active power injection at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This research paper presents the voltage rise regulation strategy at the PCC to enhance power quality and continuous operation of RDG, such as Photovoltaic Arrays (PVAs) connected to a DN. If the PCC voltage is not regulated, the penetration levels of the renewable energy integration to a DN will be limited or may be ultimately disconnected in the case of a voltage rise issue. The network is maintained in both unity power factor and voltage regulation mode, depending on the condition of the voltage fluctuation occurrences at the PCC. The research investigation shows that variation in the consumer’s loads (reduction) causes an increase in the power generated from the PVA, resulting in an increase in the grid current amplitude, reduction in the voltage of the feeder impedance and an increase in the phase voltage amplitude at the PCC. When the system is undergoing unity power factor mode, PCC voltage amplitude tends to rises with the loads. Its phase voltage amplitude rises above an acceptable range with no-loads which are not in agreement, as specified in the IEEE-1547 and Southern Africa grid code prerequisite. Incremental Conduction with Integral Regulator bases (IC + PI) are employed to access and regulate PVA generation, while the unwanted grid current distortions are attenuated from the network using an in-loop second order integral filtering circuit algorithm. Hence, the voltage rise at the PCC is mitigated through the generation of positive reactive power to the grid from the Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM), thereby regulating the phase voltage. The simulation study is carried out in a MATLAB/Simulink environment for PVA performance.

This paper proposes a method to reduce the output voltage distortions in voltage source inverters (VSI) working with impedance networks. The three main reasons for the voltage distortions include a discontinuous current in the coils of the impedance network, the double output frequency harmonics in the VSI’s voltage output caused by insufficient capacitance in the impedance network, and voltage drops on the bridge switches during the shoot-through time. The first of these distortions can be reduced by increasing the current of the impedance network when the output VSI current is low. This method requires storing energy in the battery connected to the DC link of the VSI during the “non-shoot through” time. Furthermore, this solution can also be used when the Z-source inverter works with a photovoltaic cell to help it attain a maximum power point. The Z-source inverter is essentially a voltage source inverter with the Z-source in the input. In this paper, the theory behind basic impedance networks of Z-source and quasi-Z-source (qZ-source) is investigated where simulations of the presented solutions and experimental verification of the results are also presented.

To use lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs in the supply systems of any electric mining equipment and/or machines, the required conditions of work safety must be met. This applies in particular to coal mines endangered by fire and/or explosion. To meet the spark-safety conditions, the cells (together with the battery management system—BMS) must be isolated from the influence of the environment, and therefore placed in special fire-tight housings. This significantly degrades the heat dissipation, thus affecting the operating conditions of the cell-packs. Therefore, their usage without the so-called BMS is not recommended, as shown in the authors’ preliminary research. In practice, various BMS are used, most often with the so-called passive balancing. However, their application in mines is uncertain, due to the effect of heating under operation. When it comes to active BMS, they usually possess a quite complex structure and hence, are relatively expensive. Therefore, the authors conducted research for two specially developed active and one commercial passive BMS cooperating with selected lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries when used in a suspended mining vehicle type PCA-1. The tests were carried out under environmental temperatures ranging from +5 °C to +60 °C. The effect of mismatching (12.5% to 37.5% of total cells number) of the cell parameters on the temperature distribution and voltage fading at the terminals of individual cells was checked. As a result of the investigations, the practical usefulness of the developed active BMS was determined, enabling the extension of the lithium-iron-phosphate battery life under onerous mine conditions, for a single recharge, which is a novelty. On the basis of the obtained results, appropriate practical conclusions were formulated.

In this research paper, the relationship between a crossflow turbine and propeller turbine size changes and the pond size in a free vortex power generation system was investigated. This relationship can be written in the form of a new mathematical equation using the principles of the response surface methodology (RSM) method. This study aimed to compare the efficiency of a crossflow turbine and propeller turbine to enhance a micro power plant from free vortex. The pond size in a micro power plant from free vortex was 1 m in diameter and 0.5 m in height with a 0.2 m outlet drain at the bottom. All turbines were tested at different water flowrates of 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 m3/s to identify the rpm, water head, voltage, and electric current to access the waterpower, power output, and overall efficiency. At a 0.02 m3/s water flowrate, the crossflow turbine had greater overall efficiency than the propeller turbine, reaching 9.09% efficiency. From the comparison of the results of the two turbines used in the 0.5 m high cylinder-shaped generator pond, the turbine type, turbine size (height and diameter), number of blades, and water flowrate are key factors that affect the overall efficiency. The crossflow turbine can achieve greater efficiency than the propeller turbine in this generator system.

Remaining useful life (RUL) is a crucial assessment indicator to evaluate battery efficiency, robustness, and accuracy by determining battery failure occurrence in electric vehicle (EV) applications. RUL prediction is necessary for timely maintenance and replacement of the battery in EVs. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) technique to predict the RUL of lithium-ion batteries under various training datasets. A multi-channel input (MCI) profile is implemented and compared with single-channel input (SCI) or single input (SI) with diverse datasets. A NASA battery dataset is utilized and systematic sampling is implemented to extract 10 sample values of voltage, current, and temperature at equal intervals from each charging cycle to reconstitute the input training profile. The experimental results demonstrate that MCI profile-based RUL prediction is highly accurate compared to SCI profile under diverse datasets. It is reported that RMSE for the proposed MCI profile-based ANN technique is 0.0819 compared to 0.5130 with SCI profile for the B0005 battery dataset. Moreover, RMSE is higher when the proposed model is trained with two datasets and one dataset, respectively. Additionally, the importance of capacity regeneration phenomena in batteries B0006 and B0018 to predict battery RUL is investigated. The results demonstrate that RMSE for the testing battery dataset B0005 is 3.7092, 3.9373 when trained with B0006, B0018, respectively, while it is 3.3678 when trained with B0007 due to the effect of capacity regeneration in B0006 and B0018 battery datasets.

The well-known circuit for the generation of lightning impulse voltage (LIV) on low-inductance loads was introduced by Glaninger in 1975, and the circuit component selection was proposed by Feser. However, the circuit and the approach for the component selection have some difficulties for which further adjustment is required for obtaining the waveform parameters according to the standard requirement. In this paper, an extended Glaninger’s circuit with an additional series resistor is proposed. Furthermore, a systematic design and circuit analysis of LIV generation for low-inductance loads are developed. With the help of a circuit simulator, the circuit analysis for the component selection is described. The validity of the proposed circuit was confirmed by some experimental results in comparison with the simulated ones. The proposed circuit and component selection provide not only the generation waveform according to the standard requirement but also other promising performances in terms of the wide inductance load range from 400 μH to 4 mH, a voltage efficiency of over 80%, an overshoot voltage of below 5%, an undershoot voltage of below 40%, and a maximum charging capacitance of 10 μF. From the simulated and experimental results, the proposed circuit and component selection approach is very useful for the LIV tests on low-inductance loads instead of using the conventional approach based on trial and error.

Great significance is given to the use of energy from renewable sources, especially in industrial and municipal applications. The present article is devoted to the optimal control of a DFIG generator with the help of a rotor-side converter (RSC). Its aim is to ensure the delivery of the voltage of a three-phase network with appropriate parameters while operating in an islanded grid. Such a grid is usually characterized by an uneven loading of each phase. Additionally, the load of these phases changes randomly in time. In order to ensure the assumed parameters of line voltages, the optimal control is applied with a square cost function. This ensures the shape of voltage that is in accordance with the referential voltage. Moreover, higher harmonics with a given number are detected and reduced. The simulations that were executed confirm compliance with the conditions of the parameters of the output voltage in the islanded grid. Attention was paid to oscillations in the power flowing through the rotor-side converter (RSC). The methods to accelerate the suppression of these oscillations are presented.

This paper proposes a 5.8 GHz highly efficient rectifier design using harmonic termination for wireless power transfer. The diode used to convert the received RF power to DC is a non-linear device, and a harmonic component is generated, which causes performance degradation. Therefore, in this paper, we designed a band stop filter for harmonic termination and proposed the N-stage harmonic terminated voltage multiplier (N-stage HTVM). The number of stages N can be designed differently to operate with high efficiency at various input powers for the proposed rectifier. In the proposed rectifier circuit, mathematical analysis of output DC voltage, power loss of the diode, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) were evaluated through voltage/current waveform analysis of the diode. The design method of the filter for terminating harmonics is presented. Furthermore, the change of PCE according to the increase in the number of stages was analyzed using the equivalent model of the proposed circuit and verified through measurement. The maximum PCE of one-stage HTVM was 68% when 18 dBm of input power was applied. The DC output voltage was measured to 11.6 V. When the RF input power was 25 dBm and the load was 1500 Ω, the maximum PCE of the two-stage HTVM was 71% and the maximum DC output voltage was measured as 15.8 V. The measured performance of three-stage HTVM had a PCE of 67% and DC output voltage of 19.8 V when the input power was 30 dBm.

This paper presents the integration of advanced machine learning techniques in the medium voltage distributed monitoring system QuEEN. This system is aimed to monitor voltage dips in the Italian distribution network mainly for survey and research purposes. For each recorded event it is able to automatically evaluate its residual voltage and duration from the corresponding voltage rms values and provide its “validity” (invalidating any false events caused by voltage transformers saturation) and its “origin”(upstream or downstream from the measurement point) by proper procedures and algorithms (current techniques). On the other hand, in the last years new solutions have been proposed by RSE to improve the assessment of the validity and origin of the event: the DELFI classifier (DEep Learning for False voltage dips Identification) and the FExWaveS + SVM classifier (Features Extraction from Waveform Segmentation + Support Vector Machine classifier). These advanced functionalities have been recently integrated in the monitoring system thanks to the automated software tool called QuEEN PyService. In this work, intensive use of these advanced techniques has been carried out for the first time on a significant number of monitored sites (150) starting from the data recorded from 2018 to 2021. Besides, the comparison between the results of the innovative technique (validity and origin of severe voltage dips) with respect to the current ones has been performed at the macro-regional level too. The new techniques are shown to have a not negligible impact on the severe voltage dips number and confirm a non-homogenous condition among the Italian macro-regional areas.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are lightweight and an increasingly used material with good mechanical properties. In the aviation industry, they are also required to have specific electrical properties that guarantee resistance to the direct and indirect lightning effects. The paper is focused on the description of a test stand and development of a method used to determine the electrical characteristics of conductive CFRP laminate samples with the use of high current impulses of lightning nature. Samples of three laminates (square format with side 30 × 30 cm) with a different composition were tested on the constructed stand, confirming the possibility of characterizing this type of laminate sample in terms of electrical conductivity and resistance to the effects of lightning current. It was possible to observe the impulse current flow (with a peak value up to 15 kA and a rise time above 6 µs) from the high voltage electrode placed in the center of the sample in all directions towards the edge. The optical fiber measuring system was used to record the voltage and current time waveforms. The energy stored in the impulse current generator was sufficient to simulate the mechanical damage, such as burnout and delamination, that accompanies the direct lightning strike to structural elements made of CFRP. The influence of the matrix composition used for laminate fabrication on the test results describing the electrical properties of the tested CFRP samples was noted. The experimental setup allows the testing of specimens with a maximum width and length of 50 × 50 cm and any thickness with a peak current of up to 50 kA.

The Newton–Raphson (NR) method is still frequently applied for computing load flow (LF) due to its precision and quadratic convergence properties. To compute LF in a low voltage distribution system (LVDS) with unbalanced topologies, each branch model in the LVDS can be simplified by defining the neutral and ground voltages as zero and then using Kron’s reduction to transform into a 3 × 3 branch matrix, but this decreases accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified branch model that is also reduced into a 3 × 3 matrix but is derived from the impedances of the phase-A, -B, -C, neutral, and ground conductors together with the grounding resistances, thereby increasing the accuracy. Moreover, this paper proposes improved LF equations for unbalanced LVDS with both PQ and PV nodes. The improved LF equations are based on the polar-form power injection approach. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the modified branch model and the improved LF equations.

The output power against voltage curve of the photovoltaic system changes its characteristics under partial shading conditions because of using bypass diodes. These bypass diodes are connected across the PV modules inside the string to avoid hotspot formation in the shaded PV modules. Therefore, the output curve has multiple power peaks with only one Global Max Power Point. The classical Maximum Power Point Tracking algorithms may fail to track that Global Max Power. Several soft computing algorithms have been proposed to improve tracking efficiency with different optimization principles. In this paper, an Improved Cuckoo Search Algorithm has been proposed to increase the tracking speed with minimum output power oscillation. The proposed algorithm avoids spreading the initial particles among the whole curve to predict shading pattern, but it reduces the exploration area after each iteration to compensate for the algorithm’s randomness. The proposed algorithm was compared with other methods by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink program and with practical experiments under the same operating conditions. The comparison showed that the proposed algorithm overcomes the other methods’ drawbacks and concurrently minimizes the convergence time, power oscillation, and system power losses.

Partial discharge (PD) detection and analysis plays a crucial role for acceptance testing and condition monitoring of power cables. Various aspects are related to PD in power cables from theory to practice. This paper first summarizes the PD mechanism and models used for PD analysis in power cables. Afterwards, PD detection is addressed in the aspects of off-line test, on-line test, and sensors. PD analysis is discussed in detail. Specifically, related quantities and algorithms for PD analysis are outlined. PD characteristics with affecting factors, e.g., dielectric type, load, and applied voltage are discussed. Experience on PD development trend with measurements in field is analyzed. Based on the comprehensive review, challenges of PD detection and analysis along a power cable are proposed.

This paper presents a comprehensive approach for performing phasor and frequency estimation from voltage and/or current signals of the modern power system. Undesirable components, such as decaying DC, if present in the input signal, are first attenuated using a complex-gain filter. The initial estimates of phasor and frequency are obtained next using the discrete Fourier transform and an improved estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique, respectively. Finally, the accuracy of phasor and frequency estimates are increased based on the identified system condition. Simulations performed to evaluate the proposed approach confirm that it can do fast and accurate estimation of phasor and frequency under diverse operating conditions, making it ideal for wide-area monitoring, protection, and control applications in power systems.

The device robustness has undergone an incremental pulse under differentdensity decreasing; either drain-source voltage or gate-driver voltage. Unlike silicon device, the SiCMOSFET failure mechanism firstly displays specific gradual gate-cracks mechanism and progressivegate-damage accumulations greater than 4 µs/9 J·cm−2. Secondly, a classical drain-source thermalrunaway appears, as for silicon devices, in a time greater than 9 µs. Correlations with short-circuitenergy measurements and temperature simulations are investigated. It is shown that the firstmechanism is an incremental soft gate-failure-mode which can be easily used to detect and protectthe device by a direct feedback on the gate-driver. Furthermore, it is highlighted that this newmechanism can be sufficiently consolidated to avoid the second drain-source mechanism which is ahard-failure-mode. For this purpose, it is proposed to sufficiently depolarize the on-state gate-drivevoltage to reduce the chip heating-rate and thus to decouple the failure modes. The device is muchmore robust with a short-circuit withstand time higher than 10 µs, as in silicon, no risk of thermalrunaway and with an acceptable penalty on RDS-ON.

The electric power industry sector has become increasingly aware of how counterproductive voltage sag affects distribution network systems (DNS). The voltage sag backfires disastrously at the demand load side and affects equipment in DNS. To settle the voltage sag issue, this paper achieved its primary purpose to mitigate the voltage sag based on integrating a hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) with the DNS using a distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) system. Besides, this paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of D-STATCOM in DNS. In this paper, using HFC is well-designed, modeled, and simulated to mitigate the voltage sag in DNS with a positive impact on the environment and an immediate response to the issue of the injection of voltage. Furthermore, this modeling and controller are particularly suitable in terms of cost-effectiveness as well as reliability based on the adaptive network fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), fuzzy logic system (FLC), and proportional–integral (P-I). The effectiveness of the MATLAB simulation is confirmed by implementing the system and carrying out a DNS connection, obtaining efficiencies over 94.5% at three-phase fault for values of injection voltage in HFC D-STATCOM using a P-I controller. Moreover, the HFC D-STATCOM using FLC proved capable of supporting the network by 97.00%. The HFC D-STATCOM based ANFIS proved capable of supporting the network by 98.00% in the DNS.

In this paper, an optimal sizing and placement framework (OSPF) is performed for electric parking lots integrated with wind turbines in a 33-bus distribution network. The total objective function is defined as minimizing the total cost including the cost of grid power, cost of power losses, cost of charge and discharge of parking lots, cost of wind turbines as well as voltage deviations reduction. In the OSPF, optimization variables are selected as electric parking size and wind turbines, which have been determined optimally using an intelligent method named arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) inspired by arithmetic operators in mathematics. The load following strategy (LFS) is used for energy management in the OSPF. The OSPF is evaluated in three cases of the objective function such as minimizing the cost of power losses, minimizing the network voltage deviations, and minimizing the total objective function using the AOA. The capability of the AOA is compared with the well-known particle swarm optimization (PSO) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms for solving the OSPF in the last case. The findings show that the power loss, voltage deviations, and power purchased from the grid are reduced considerably based on the OSPF using the AOA. The results show the lowest total cost of energy and also minimum network voltage deviation (third case) by the AOA in comparison with the PSO and ABC with a higher convergence rate, which confirms the better capability of the proposed method. The results of the first and second cases show the high cost of power purchased from the main grid as well as the high total cost. Therefore, the comparison of different cases confirms that considering the cost index along with losses and voltage deviations causes a compromise between different objectives, and thus the cost of purchasing power from the main network is significantly reduced. Moreover, the voltage profile of the network improves, and also the minimum voltage of the network is also enhanced using the OSPF via the AOA.

High penetration levels of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) could cause stress on the network and might violate the limits and constraints under extreme conditions, such as exceeding power and voltage limits on transformers and power lines. This paper defines extreme conditions as the state of a load or network that breaks the limits of the constraints in an optimization model. Once these constraints are violated, the optimization algorithm might not work correctly and might not converge to a feasible solution, especially when the complexity of the system increases and includes nonlinearities. Hence, the algorithm may not help in mitigating the impact of penetrating PEVs under extreme conditions. To solve this problem, an original algorithm is suggested that is able to adapt the constraints’ limits according to the energy demand and the energy needed to charge the PEVs. Different case scenarios are studied for validation purposes, such as charging PEVs under different state of charge levels, different energy demands at home, and different pricing mechanisms. Results show that our original algorithm improved the profiles of the voltage and power under extreme conditions. Hence, the algorithm is able to improve the integration of a high number of PEVs on the distribution system under extreme conditions while preserving its stability.

Large-scale wind farms in commercial operations have demonstrated growing influence on the stability of an electricity network and the power quality thereof. Variations in the output power of large-scale wind farms cause voltage fluctuations in the corresponding electrical networks. To achieve low-voltage ride-through capability in a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) during a fault event, this study proposes a real-time reactive power control strategy for effective DFIG application and a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) for reactive power compensation. Mathematic models were developed for the DFIG and STATCOM, followed by the development of an indirect control scheme for the STATCOM based on decoupling dual-loop current control. Moreover, a real-world case study on a commercial wind farm comprising 23 DFIGs was conducted. The voltage regulation performance of the proposed reactive power control scheme against a fault event was also simulated. The simulation results revealed that enhanced fault ride-through capability and prompt recovery of the output voltage provided by a wind turbine generator could be achieved using the DFIG along with the STATCOM in the event of a three-phase short-circuit fault.

The three-phase H7 inverter topology installs an additional power semiconductor switch to the positive or negative node of the DC-link for reducing the common-mode voltage (CMV) by disconnecting the inverter from the DC source during the zero-voltage vectors. The conventional CMV reduction method for the three-phase H7 inverter uses modified discontinuous pulse width modulation (MDPWM) and generates a switching signal for the additional switch using logical operations. However, the conventional method is unable to eliminate the CMV for the entire dwell time of the zero-voltage vectors. It only has the effect of reducing the CMV in a limited area of the space vector where the V7 zero voltage vector is applied. Therefore, this paper proposes an optimized modulation method that can reduce the CMV during the entire dwell time of zero-voltage vectors. The proposed method moves the switching patterns by adding an offset voltage to guarantee that only one kind of zero-voltage vector, V7, is applied in the system. It then turns off the seventh switch only during the zero-voltage vector to disconnect the inverter from the DC source. As a result, the CMV and the leakage current are attenuated for the entire dwell time of the zero-voltage vector. Simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method.

Hydraulic pumped storage is a special power generation and electricity shortage technology, which is usually operated with thermal power and nuclear power units, and plays a key role in ultra-high voltage and smart grid. Pressure fluctuations are the main reasons for the instability of the S-shaped region of pump–turbines, which seriously affects their lifespan and operation stability. To reveal the mechanism and propagation law of pressure fluctuations in the S-shaped region as well as numerical simulations at the turbine, the braking and the reverse pump operating conditions of a pump–turbine were carried out. Numerical results were validated using the performance experiments, and the generation mechanism and propagation law of pressure fluctuation were analyzed in detail. The analyses show that high-amplitude pressure fluctuations mainly occur in the braking and reverse pump operating conditions. Under the braking condition, a 0.49-fn low-frequency pressure fluctuation was captured, which is caused by the rotation of the backflow in the vanes. Under the reverse pump condition, a 0.19-fn low-frequency pressure fluctuation was confirmed, which is caused by the periodic rotation of the vortex between the vaneless space. This study has important guiding significance for practical engineering application.

The study of this topology is justified by the small amount of research that employs 3SSC-A and the advantages inherent to 3SSC-based converters, such as the division of current stresses between the semiconductors, the distribution of thermal losses, and the high-density power. Therefore, a complete static analysis of the converter is described, as well as the study of all voltage and current stresses in the semiconductors, the development of a loss model in all components, and a comparison with other step-up structures. Additionally, the small-signal model validation is accomplished by comparing the theoretical frequency response and the simulated AC sweep analysis. Finally, implementing a simple controller structure, the converter is experimentally validated through a 600 W prototype, where its overall efficiency is examined for various load conditions, reaching 96.8% at nominal load. The deterioration of lithium-ion batteries has been detected by an increase in the battery impedance by means of an alternating current method or a battery capacity test. These methods require an interruption of the operation because the battery has to be removed. A method estimating equivalent circuit parameters of a lithium-ion battery during operation is proposed in this article. The increase in the internal impedance has a close relation to the deterioration of the battery. The circuit is expressed by a resister and an RC parallel circuit connected in series. The parameters can be estimated by applying a convolution technique to the voltage and current fluctuation of the battery during operation. A diagnosis circuit using a microcomputer is developed using a simple algorithm employing z-transformation in the parameter estimation. The estimated parameters depend on its state of charge (SOC) and ambient temperature. The SOC dependency is solved by estimating timing, and the temperature dependency is corrected by a function derived in this article. The deterioration diagnosis of the battery can be applied to a solar power generation system, and the feasibility is discussed in this article.

To solve the problems of large current stress, difficult soft-switching of all switches, and slow dynamic response of dual active bridge converters, a multi-objective unified optimal control strategy based on triple-phase-shift control was proposed. The forward power flow global modes of triple-phase-shift control were analyzed, and three high-efficiency modes were selected to establish the analytical models of current stress and soft-switching. Combined with these models, the optimal solutions in different modes were derived by using the cost function-optimization equation to overcome the limitation of the Lagrange multiplier method, such that the DAB converter achieved the minimum current stress, and all switches operated in the soft-switching state over the entire power range. At the same time, the virtual power component was introduced in the phase-shift ratio combination, which improved the dynamic response of output voltage under the input voltage or load steps changed by power control. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed control strategy can optimize the performance of the DAB converter from three aspects, such as current stress, soft-switching, and dynamic response, which achieves multi-objective optimization of the steady-state and dynamic performance of DAB converters.

This paper presents new and original architectures and implementations of two filterless, open-loop digital Class-BD audio amplifiers with constant common mode (CM) output voltage. The first, low-power amplifier consists of four ultrahigh-current EL7158 pin drivers, the OUT pins of which form the H bridge. The drivers are controlled from the extended LBDD PWM modulator and have appropriately set voltage levels on the VL and VH pins. The second proposed amplifier consists of two cooperating H-bridge power stages (HBS) implemented on complementary MOSFET pairs and powered by two different voltages. Both HBSs are driven by four EL7158 pin drivers having appropriately adjusted voltage levels on the VL and VH pins and controlled by an extended LBDD PWM modulator. The hybrid 9 bit DPWM modulator uses a linearized Class-BD double-sided modulation scheme with pre-compensation, enabling the most faithful emulation of natural NBDD PWM and, thus, providing attractive spectral characteristics at the DM output. Basic SPICE simulations and experimental results of the proposed digital Class-BD amplifiers were compared with the conventional digital Class-BD amplifiers. The elimination of CM signals significantly contributes to the reduction in electromagnetic interference (EMI), particularly those produced on the cables connecting the loudspeaker to the HBS terminal. Proposed Class-BD amplifiers with original and new topologies, due to their simple design and easy control (no galvanic isolation of control signals and no floating bias power supplies), which generate no CM voltage and feature excellent DM performance, similar to conventional Class-BD amplifiers, are very attractive solutions for filterless Class-BD amplifiers.

The effect of NH3 in H2 and in air was investigated at various concentrations ranging from 1.0 ppm to 100 ppm in air and ranging from 0.25 ppm to 10 ppm in fuel. The effect of NH3 on cathode caused an instantaneous decrease in cell voltage which dropped from 0.734 V to 0.712 V in 30 h and drop rates was 0.73 mV/h for 1 ppm; however, the cell voltage dropped to 0.415 V in 1 h for 100 ppm of NH3. The voltage could not be recovered after the polarization test (V-I test) but could be recovered to 84.4% after operation with neat air for 1.5 h and 98.4% after cycle voltammogram (CV). It was found that the voltage drop was obvious, and the drop rate increased with the NH3 concentration in H2. The voltage drop rates at 500 mA/cm2 were 0.54 mV/h for 0.5 ppm of NH3, 0.8 mV/h for 1 ppm, and 2 mV/h for 10 ppm. The voltage could be recovered from 70.6% to 77.3% after discharged with high purity H2 for 24 h, to 92.8% after being purged with clean air for 10 h and to 98.4% after CV scan. The tolerance concentration of NH3 in H2 for 1000 h was 40 ppb, for 2000 h was 20 ppb, and for 5000 h was 9 ppb.

This paper investigates the impact of parameter variation between parallel connected SiC MOSFETs on short circuit (SC) performance. SC tests are performed on parallel connected devices with different switching rates, junction temperatures and threshold voltages (VTH). The results show that VTH variation is the most critical factor affecting reduced robustness of parallel devices under SC. The SC current conducted per device is shown to increase under parallel connection compared to single device measurements. VTH shift from bias–temperature–instability (BTI) is known to occur in SiC MOSFETs, hence this paper combines BTI and SC tests. The results show that a positive VGS stress on the gate before the SC measurement reduces the peak SC current by a magnitude that is proportional to VGS stress time. Repeating the measurements at elevated temperatures reduces the time dependency of the VTH shift, thereby indicating thermal acceleration of negative charge trapping. VTH recovery is also observed using SC measurements. Similar measurements are performed on Si IGBTs with no observable impact of VGS stress on SC measurements. In conclusion, a test methodology for investigating the impact of BTI on SC characteristics is presented along with key results showing the electrothermal dynamics of parallel devices under SC conditions.

This paper presents a power control method for a hybrid electrical system, which enhances a conventional main AC grid by adding a DC sub-grid in parallel. In this system, each prosumer connects to the sub-grid via a couple of half-bridge inverters of a device called a power router. All of the power routers connected to the sub-grid are controlled such that they maintain the voltage of the sub-grid equally, which is an essential feature of peer-to-peer power accommodation without synchronization. This paper proposes an adaptive hysteresis current-control technique for controlling sub-grid-connected inverters that maintains the voltage of the sub-grid while accommodating a given power. The proposed control method also balances currents between positive and negative lines of the sub-grid simultaneously. The proposed control method is implemented on a high-speed FPGA-based digital controller and is evaluated on three prototypes of the power router. The experimental results show that the proposed method yields fast and stable responses and enables the power router to accommodate power with a high accuracy.

As the interconnection of renewable-energy-based distributed generations (DGs) to the distribution system increases, the local and temporary voltage and current problems, which are difficult to resolve with the existing operation method, are becoming serious. In this study, we propose a short-term operational method that can effectively resolve voltage and current violations caused by instantaneous output fluctuations of DGs in a system with a high hosting capacity of renewable energy sources. To achieve the objectives, a modified heuristic network reconfiguration method, and a method determining the maximum power output limit of individual DGs are proposed. We propose a cooperative method for controlling the power output fluctuations of renewable-energy-based DGs, which includes voltage control, network reconfiguration, and power curtailment. The proposed algorithm was verified through case studies by using a test system implemented in MATLAB environments. It can effectively resolve violations caused by DGs while minimizing the number of switching operations and power curtailment. The proposed method is an appropriate operation method to be applied to the real system as it can cope with the instantaneous output fluctuation of DGs, which was not dealt with in the existing operation method.

The paper analyses how the characteristics of the medium-voltage network with insulated neutral and the conditions under which the single line-to-ground fault occurs (insulation condition and value of the fault resistance) influence the zero-sequence components of the voltage of the transformer station medium-voltage bus bar, the fault current, the currents of the faulted line and the currents of the other non-faulted power lines connected to the transformer station bus bars. Assuming the waveform of the medium voltage bus voltages in the transformer station is known, the influence of the fault resistance on the total distortion coefficient of the fault current is analysed. This establishes the conditions under which a single line-to-ground fault can be detected by controlling the total distortion coefficient of the fault current and the currents of the fault-free lines. It also examines the conditions under which a single line-to-ground fault can be selectively detected by checking the effective value and direction of flow of the zero-sequence currents of the medium-voltage lines during the fault. The results obtained by the calculation were verified experimentally in the medium voltage network considered in the study. The acceptable differences, considering the degree of accuracy with which the parameters of a medium voltage network are known, between the results obtained by calculation and those obtained experimentally show that the simplifying assumptions accepted for the mathematical models used in the calculation are correct.

In Power Systems, Synchronous Generators (SGs) are mostly used for generating electricity. Their insulation system, of which epoxy resin is a core component, plays a significant role in reliable operation. Epoxy resin has high mechanical strength, a characteristic that makes it a very good material for reliable SG insulation. Partial Discharges (PDs) are a constant threat to this insulation since they cause deterioration and consequential degradation of the aforementioned material. Therefore, it is very important to detect PDs, as they are both a symptom of insulation deterioration and a means to identify possible faults. Offline and Online PDs Tests are described, and a MATLAB/Simulink model, which simulates the capacitive model of PDs, is presented in this paper. Moreover, experiments are carried out in order to examine how the flashover voltage of epoxy resin samples is affected by different humidity levels. The main purpose of this manuscript is to investigate factors, such as the applied voltage, number, and volume of water droplets and water conductivity, which affect the condition of epoxy resin, and how these are related to PDs and flashover voltages, which may appear also in electrical machines’ insulation. The aforementioned factors may affect the epoxy resin, resulting in an increase in PDs, which in turn increases the overall Electrical Rotating Machines (EMs) risk factor.

This paper presents an experimentally verified approach to deriving switching arc energy limitations for low-voltage (LV) circuit breakers (CBs). Air-insulated contactors equipped with additional vacuum-insulated (VI) arcing contacts were tested for AC and DC current interruption efficiency, respectively. In the study, the contact arrangements of reed relay VI contact switches of low current breaking capacity combined with air-insulated contactors were examined. Tests were performed on selected LV CBs inductively loaded for LV power network rated voltages. A comparative analysis of the arc energy resulting from various arc time durations recorded during the switching-off operation was performed. Using a variety of either basic CB air-insulated contact systems or combined contact systems, a practical assessment of the proposed idea for enhancing the arc quenching efficiency was undertaken. As a result of the implementation of the proposed idea, the arc burning duration time was indicated as being hundreds of times shorter. In most cases, a complete arc reduction was achieved. Moreover, the resulting arc energy dissipation during the breaking operation was substantially minimized. Consequently, a significant increase in the total current breaking capacity of the tested CBs was achieved.

Since conventional lightning protection measures do not effectively extinguish subsequent arcs of electrical frequency after the passage of lightning, it is impossible to prevent lightning-related accidents on the distribution lines. To solve this problem, a 10 kV multi-chamber arc-quenching arrester (MCAA) applicable to transmission lines of different voltage levels is developed. In order to research the arc-quenching characteristics of the MCAA, COMSOL software was used to simulate and analyze the high-speed airflow coupled arc process. Under the action of a strong airflow at high speed, the arc is segmented, the temperature of the arc falls sharply, and eventually, the arc is extinguished. In the simulation process, the conductivity of the arc and the clouds of change of air speed were achieved. It may be concluded that arc segmentation time and airflow generation time are at a subtle level. Meanwhile, an experimental circuit was established to conduct the arc-quenching experiment. A high-speed camera was used to observe the experimental process and the oscilloscope was used to record the arc-quenching waveform. The experimental results show that the MCAA had a good arc-extinguishing effect and that the arc was extinguished within 0.35 ms. The current amplitude of the frequency arc was 1.2 kA.

High voltage electric power equipment requires rigorous regulation testing to specific standards which ensure proper and safe operation in the grid. Manufacturers conduct these tests in order to prove standard compliance and product liability. Variable linear or nonlinear loads are necessary for testing medium voltage (MV) high power AC power converters. Generally, those AC power converters or power supplies require performance validation, burn-in and/or lifetime testing under different load conditions, defined by the end-user or standards for the given applications. For flexible and efficient MV verification testing, this paper presents a five-level multilevel converter-based MV regenerative AC electronic load with one-cycle control (OCC), which is based on five-level diode-clamped multilevel converters with back-to-back structure and can emulate any impedance load. In this paper, especially the dc-link capacitor voltage balance of the proposed multilevel MV regenerative AC load is deeply analyzed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the dc-link voltage balance performance of the proposed multilevel MV regenerative AC electronic load.
