An encyclopedia entry on the cultural journals in Latin America is presented. Carlos Quijano founded "Marcha," in Montevideo, Uruguay in June 1939 to serve as a medium for economic, political and aesthetic debate. "Orígenes," was an arts review founded in Havana, Cuba by José Lezama Lima and José Rodríguez Feo in 1944. The monthly cultural journal "Plural," was launched in Mexico by the newspaper "Excelsior" in 1971.

A biography of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Argentine politician, educator, man of letters, is presented. He was born in San Juan, Argentina on February 15, 1811. He learned to read at the age of four and attended the Escuela de la Patria in San Juan from 1816-1825. He was considered a champion of the principles of the European Enlightenment in Latin America. Among his works are "Mi defensa" and "Viajes por Europa, Africa y América."

A biography of Cuban dramatist, prose writer and poet Virgilio Piñera is presented. He attended the University of Havana from 1932-1937 and resumed studies in 1938 for a further two years. He was founding editor of "Poeta," worked as a clerk in the Cuban Consulate and as a translator and editor for the publishing house Argos. Piñera is widely regarded for his theatre and is Cuba's principal exponent of the Theatre of the Absurd.

An encyclopedia entry about transculturation in Latin America is presented. The term "transculturation," coined in the 1940s by the Cuban anthropologist and theorist of African-Cuba movements, Fernando Ortiz, is used as a refinement of "acculturation," which describes a process of assimilation and absorption of minority cultures by dominant ones. The role of Uruguayan critic Ángel Rama in the introduction of the term into literary studies in the 1970s is noted.
