Abstract
- An encyclopedia entry about transculturation in Latin America is presented. The term "transculturation," coined in the 1940s by the Cuban anthropologist and theorist of African-Cuba movements, Fernando Ortiz, is used as a refinement of "acculturation," which describes a process of assimilation and absorption of minority cultures by dominant ones. The role of Uruguayan critic Ángel Rama in the introduction of the term into literary studies in the 1970s is noted.
