After a long-term toxicity study on Bisphenol A (BPA), the European Union and U.S food and drug administration updating the rules regarding the usage of BPA by extending the prohibition of BPA to include in the production of papers, on February 2018. Therefore, it is essential to establish the trace level BPA detectors in paper samples. In this report, the synthesis of novel ZnO nanoclusters wrapped with reduced graphene oxide (ZnO NCs/rGO) and its application towards the selective electrocatalytic detection of BPA are described. Initially, ZnO NCs/rGO is synthesized by the one-step hydrothermal approach, and various characterizations explain the compound's compositions and structure. The significance of ZnO NCs/rGO together with good electrocatalytic properties leads this material to the platform for electrochemical sensor. Finally, ZnO NCs/rGO was fabricated and validated as an effective sensor for the sensitive detection of BPA. The demonstrated sensor revealed excellent detection of BPA with the very low detection limit (2.1 nM), and also it offered good analytical parameters with more extensive linear range and higher sensitivity. Likewise, the sensor annexes good durability, reproducibility, and selectivity towards the determination of BPA. Due to the nourishing capacity of the prepared ZnO NCs/rGO, it is employed for the detection of BPA in tissue paper samples.

We studied the avoidance behaviour of the earthworm Eisenia fetida towards Cd, Cu, and Zn, trace elements (TEs) tested as chloride, nitrate and sulphate salts. Sub adults were exposed individually using dual-cell chambers at 20+2°C in the dark. Recordings were realised at different dates from 2h to 32h. We used filter paper and extruded water agar gel as exposure media to evaluate the contribution of the dermal and the digestive exposure routes on the avoidance reactions. Exposures to Cu or Cd (10mgmetal ionL(-1)) resulted in highly significant avoidance reactions through the exposure duration. Worms avoided Zn poorly and reactions towards Zn salts varied along the exposure. Worm sensitivity towards TEs differed between salts and this could result from differential toxicity or accessibility of these TE salts to earthworms. The anion in itself was not the determinant of the avoidance reactions since exposures to similar concentrations of these anions using calcium salts did not result in significant avoidance worm behaviour. Avoidance responses towards TEs were higher in the case of water agar exposures than in filter paper exposures. Thus, dermal contacts with TE solutions would elicit worm avoidance but signals from receptors located inside the digestive tract could reinforce this behaviour. The use of extruded water agar gels as the substrate allows checking the real sensitivity of earthworm species towards TEs since the TE concentrations leading to significant avoidance reactions were below those reported in the literature when using TE-spiked soils.

Combining adsorption and photocatalysis is an effective strategy for degrading organic pollutants. Here, BiVO4@diatomite composite photocatalyst (BiVO4@diatomite CP) was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis from Bi(NO3)3·5H2O glycerin solution, NH4VO3 solution and diatomite. BiVO4@diatomite/microcrystalline cellulose/PVB composite fibers (BiVO4@diatomite/MCC/PVBCFs) were prepared from BiVO4@diatomite CPs, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and PVB ethanol solution using the electrospinning method. BiVO4@diatomite/MCC/PVBCFs were then mixed with pulp fibers to prepare the visible light-responsive photocatalytic paper. BiVO4@diatomite CP with a BiVO4/diatomite ratio of 6:4 had good interface states and displayed good photocatalytic activity with 64.32% degradation of methylene blue (MB) after 4 h. A PVB ethanol solution (6%) was formulated with BiVO4@diatomite CP and MCC to provide an ethanol spinning solution (12% solid) to prepare BiVO4@diatomite/MCC/PVBCFs (3:3:4). The resulting fibers had smooth surfaces, compact structures and exhibited good photocatalytic activity (66.80% and 56.80% degradation of MB and formaldehyde (HCHO), respectively, after 4 h). Photocatalytic paper containing 18% BiVO4@diatomite/MCC/PVBCFs had good photocatalytic activity with 50.20% degradation of HCHO after 4 h. This paper also had good physical properties and has the potential to be used for the photocatalytic degradation of indoor air pollutants, such as HCHO.

Pulp and paper mill wastewater (PPMWW) contains high concentrations of recalcitrant compounds that cause toxicity to organisms. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have the ability to degrade these compounds and reduce overall toxicity. Physicochemical characterization and Lactuca sativa toxicity test were conducted to compare the effectiveness of two post-treatments: UV/H2O2 and photo-Fenton. A comparison of four phytotoxicity indexes was carried out. PPMWW from a Brazilian treatment plant was characterized by high values of phenols, color, integrated spectral area (ISA), and chemical oxygen demand (COD), and caused significant inhibition to seedling development. The use of both post-treatments allowed the removal of over 75% of phenols, color, ISA, and COD. Although UV/H2O2 was more effective in removing phenols and ISA, photo-Fenton better reduced phytotoxicity. The most sensitive phytotoxicity indexes were RGIC0.8 and GIC80%, whereas SGC0, REC-0.25 and REC-0.50 better showed the effectiveness of the post-treatments. We suggest the combined use of two phytotoxicity indexes: one that evaluates the effects on seed germination and, another, on root elongation, e.g., SGC0 and RGIC0.8. Additionally, we recommend the use of ISA for monitoring programs of wastewater treatments because it is a cost-effective approach that allows narrowing down the search and identification of compounds present in complex mixtures.

Bioactive substances in the Biobio River Basin in Chile were examined by deploying Semi Permeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) upstream and downstream of 4 pulp mill effluent discharges. Androgenic and estrogenic activity of SPMD extracts were then evaluated using in vitro fish sex steroid receptor binding assays. The results indicated the occurrence of estrogenic type compounds associated with one of the mill discharges. A significant correlation among the presence of these compounds, an increase in gonadosomatic index GSI and induction of hepatic EROD activity of two native fish species was observed. However, no significant presence of mature oocytes in female gonads was detected. Although EROD induction was observed in sites impacted by mill effluents, an increase of its activity occurred towards the downstream areas, suggesting other non-mill sources. More research is needed to understand the environmental changes in context of the new technological improvements in treatment systems to MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) recently implemented by the pulp mill industries.

Fluoride removal from aqueous solution by adsorption using fly ash cenospheres (FAC) modified with paper mill lime mud (LM) as composite adsorbent had been investigated. The characterization of FAC and composite adsorbent were analyzed by Scanning electron spectroscope (SEM), Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Brunauer emmett teller (BET) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), which demonstrated that the porous structure of composite adsorbent was obtained after surface modification. Adsorption of fluoride on modified fly ash cenospheres was fitted with pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the effects of F− concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage and temperature on the removal efficiency. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the adequacy of the mathematical models. The Nonelectrostatic model of modified fly ash cenospheres adsorbing fluoride was built through the Generalized composite method, indicating that two inner-spherical complexes, ≡SF and ≡SOHF−, were formed in the adsorption process by means of the ligand exchange and surface complexation. Optimization of the adsorption conditions enabled the realization of the practical needs for fluoride contaminated water.

This work presents the results of removing heavy metals from paper mill wastewater (PMS) sludge spiked with cow dung (CD) employing Eisenia fetida. A total of seven set-ups were prepared: CD (100 percent), PMS: CD (1:3), PMS:CD (1:2), PMS:CD (1:1), PMS (100 percent), PMS:CD (3:1) and PMS:CD (2:1) and changes in chemical parameters were observed for 60 days. Vermistabilization caused the significant decrease in the level of Cd (32–37 percent), Cr (47.3–80.9 percent), Cu (68.8–88.4 percent), and Pb (95.3–97.5 percent) and substantial increase in EC, total-N, available P and K at the end. At the end, the tissues of inoculated worms showed the high load (mg kg−1, dry biomass) of Pb (8.81–9.69), Cd (2.31–2.71), Cr (20.7–35.9) and Cu (9.94–11.6), respectively which indicated bioaccumulation of metals by worms. The PMS:CD (2:1 and/or 3:1) appeared to be suitable waste mixture in terms of high metal removal and earthworm growth rates. Bioaccumulation, as quantified using BCF, was in the order: Cd>Cr>Pb>Cu. Results suggested vermiremediation as appropriate technology for bioremediation of heavy metals from PMS.

In order to study immunomodulation, controlled laboratory experiments were carried out with roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) exposed to bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME) or spent bleach liquor (SBL) from two pulp and paper mills using elementary chlorine and chlorine dioxide for bleaching. The total number of immunoglobulin-secreting cells (ISC) and the number of specific antibody-secreting cells (ASC) were determined by ELISPOT assay. Exposure to BKME resulted in decreased numbers of ISC in the spleen. To study the capability of response against foreign antigens the fish were immunized with bovine γ-globulin. Exposure to BKME or SBL reduced antigen-specific ASC response in fish. Moreover, the suppression of ASC response did not require exposure prior to immunization. Depuration of fish in clean water reveals that the immunosuppression caused by BKME is reversible. The ASC response in the BKME-pretreated fish returned to the same or even a higher level compared to untreated immunized fish and, in addition, the number of ISC increased greatly. The results of this study verify an earlier finding on poor antibody response due to exposure in a lake contaminated with BKME. Exposure to SBL alone suppresses antibody-mediated immunity, suggesting that compounds formed in bleaching are at least partly responsible for immunotoxic effects.

In order to validate previous field observations by the authors on whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus L. s.l., a 30-day laboratory experiment with concentrations (0, 1.3, 2.3, 3.5, and 7 vol%) of bleached kraft pulp and paper mill effluent (BKME) simulating those occurring in a polluted lake was conducted. Chlorine dioxide had almost entirely replaced chlorine gas in the bleaching of pulp. As a consequence, the concentrations of adsorbable organic halogens and chlorinated phenolics (CPs) in BKME were significantly lowered compared to earlier studies. This reduction was also seen in the concentrations of CPs in the bile and CPs and extractable organic halogens in the intestinal lipids: the concentrations were low and did not depend on the dilution of BKME. In contrast, the resin acid content of bile decreased with decreasing BKME concentration. The growth of fish was speeded up in all BKME concentrations. However, at the highest BKME concentration (7 vol%) the increase was lowest. The induction of hepatic ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity revealed strong dose-response relationship with BKME. At 3.5 vol% BKME (corresponding to a distance of 3.3 km from the mill sewer in the field) the EROD activity increased 12-fold. There was a tendency for lower activity of uridinediphosphate glucuronosyltransferase in the liver, but the decrease (34%; P < 0.05) was statistically significant only at 7 vol% BKME. The activity of liver glutathione S-transferase remained unchanged. All dilutions of BKME significantly depressed the concentrations of plasma immunoglobulin M (IgM). Erythrocytic concentrations of nucleotide triphosphates decreased and of sodium increased as the BKME concentration increased. Also some other blood parameters (hematocrit, hemoglobin, plasma glucose, and aspartate aminotransferase) were changed in all BKME exposures, although without obvious dependence on effluent concentration. In conclusion, there was a good agreement between field studies and laboratory experiments using BKME concentrations occurring in the field, confirming close or similar causes for responsive toxicity endpoints.

Toxic effects of unbleached (sulfate or sulfite) and bleached (sulfate) paper mill effluents were studied in a primary culture of rainbow trout liver cells. The effluents and control water from a clean area were extracted with diethyl ether and added to the cultures dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide. Plasma membrane integrity was studied by measuring lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage. The cellular content of glutathione (GSH) was used as an indicator of oxidative stress and the formation of reactive intermediates. Dose-response studies indicated that unbleached effluents contained more potent toxic substances than bleached effluents. Both unbleached and bleached effluents contained organic diethyl ether-extractable substances which increased cytochrome P450-dependent 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities. The inducing effects were seen at concentrations substantially lower than those decreasing GSH content and increasing LDH leakage. Possible EROD inducing substances in bleached effluents are chlorinated organic compounds. Inducing compounds in unbleached effluents are yet to be identified. Furthermore, at higher concentrations the effluents contained substances that inhibited the cytochrome P450 system. The results show that the trout primary hepatocyte cultures afford a convenient in vitro method for screening cytochrome P450 inducing components extracted from industrial effluents to investigate mechanisms by which wastewaters cause injury in cells.

This paper describes a method for deriving site-specific water quality criteria for selenium using a two-step process: (1) gather information on selenium residues and biological effects at the site and in down-gradient systems and (2) examine criteria based on the degree of bioaccumulation, the relationship between measured residues and threshold concentrations for reproductive effects in fish and wildlife, and any observed reproductive impacts. Several outcomes are possible—criteria can be left unmodified, adjusted upward by a fixed amount (50%), or adjusted downward by one of three amounts (25, 50, or 75%). A criterion (existing or proposed) is lowered or raised by an amount that is proportional to the magnitude of bioaccumulation and toxic effects present—i.e., the degree of biological hazard. Criteria can be modified under two circumstances: (1) diagnostic residuesandtoxic effects must be coupled (present) in order to lower a criterion or (2) diagnostic residuesandtoxic effects must be coupled (absent) in order to raise a criterion. Coupling residues and effects makes the procedure sensitive to the natural inter- and intraspecific variation in bioaccumulation and toxic responses exhibited by fish and wildlife in aquatic ecosystems. The goal is to establish criteria that keep food-chain bioaccumulation below levels that result in toxicity to fish and wildlife. Precautions are given for those attempting to apply the generic EPA model for implementing national water quality criteria to a site-specific selenium criterion.

The toxicity of pulp and paper mill effluents was estimated by exposing rainbow trout to the effluents in situ during four seasons. The experiments were carried out using one control group and three test groups at different distances from the discharge. After a 10-day exposure mainly hematological parameters were determined from the caged fish. The caging site affected most of the 15 parameters analyzed (blood Hct, MCHC, erythrocyte, and leucocyte counts; plasma gluc, prot, urea, Ca2+, Mg2+). Some changes were detected even at the farthest caging site, 8 km from the discharge. The time of year strongly influenced the results. Seasonal variation exceeded the variation caused by caging site. In addition, the season influenced the responses of rainbow trout to the effluent in many parameters. None of the responses detected were observed in all the experiments. The only significant changes in the median values of the parameters from the caging experiments were a decrease in the plasma Mg2+ and an increase in the plasma K+ concentration.

Hepatic monooxygenase (MO) and conjugation enzyme activities, metabolites of chlorinated phenolics in the bile, and blood ionoregulatory parameters were studied in juvenile whitefish (Coregonus muksun Pallas and C. muksun X Coregonus peled Gmelin hybrid) held in cages downstream from a mill producing chlorine-bleached kraft pulp and printing paper. MO activities, measured as benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase, 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase, and 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase, were significantly induced in whitefish caged about 5 km from the effluent outlet. The highest mean increase detected was 17 times the control value. In the nearest caging station (3 km) the induction was lower, indicating inhibition or toxicity caused by the effluent. The levels of bile metabolites of chlorinated phenolics showed highest concentrations at the nearest station and decreased levels at more distant locations over the whole water area studied (15 km). Bile metabolites in whitefish exposed in control areas confirmed low-level background pollution of the lake system due to chlorinated phenolics. Observations on blood ionic concentrations suggest that whitefish were able to regulate their hydromineral balance despite the environmental pollution affecting physiology of biotransformation.

Recently, slurry phase bioremediation as a simple and economical method is shown to be a successful technique for remediation of clayey soils. Besides, the use of microbial cell immobilization as a promising technique has drawn the attention of some researchers. The primary objective of this survey is to examine the synergistic adsorption and biodegradation performance of heavy crude oil by an isolated Bacillus licheniformis immobilized in a novel hybrid matrix (PUF/alginate/microbial cell) in aqueous phase. Isotherm studies and adsorption kinetics of crude oil on PUF matrix were carried out and their results revealed a good correlation between experimental data and Langmuir’s isotherm and maximum monolayer coverage was found out to be 1.25 g/g PUF. The other objective of this research is examination of hybrid matrix in slurry phase bioremediation of heavy crude oil polluted clayey soil as a reluctant model soil. In order to model, optimize, and investigate the factors affecting the total organic carbon (TOC) reduction, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied. For this purpose, the effect of three variables including crude oil concentration (5000–25,000 mg/kg dry soil), soil salinity (0–10%), and water to soil ratio (WSR: 2–10) have been studied. In this study, TOC reduction was achieved in ranging from 39% to 80% in crude oil polluted soil after 21 days. Additionally, experiments by polyurethane foam (PUF)-immobilized cell, alginate-immobilized cell, and freely cell suspended systems were conducted to compare the performance of hybrid-immobilized cell with other systems. Our results showed the superiority of immobilized cells in hybrid matrix of PUF/alginate compared to other immobilized cell (IC) and free cell (FC) systems. Overall, the results indicated that the hybrid matrix with simultaneous adsorption-biodegradation capacity is potentially suitable for further development for oil spill treatment and it can be used as an efficient cleaning method in TOC removal from actual polluted soils.

Increases in wastewater discharges and the generation of municipal solid wastes have resulted in deleterious effects on the environment, causing eutrophication and pollution of water bodies. It is therefore necessary to investigate sustainable bioremediation alternatives. Wastewater treatment using consortia of microalgae-bacteria is an attractive alternative because it allows the removal and recycling of nutrients, with the additional advantage of biomass production and its subsequent conversion into valuable by-products. The present study aims to integrate wastewater and landfill leachate treatment with the production of microalgal biomass, considering not only its valorization in terms of lipid and carbohydrate content but also the effect of nutrient limitation on biomass formation. The effect of treating a mixture of raw wastewater with different leachate ratios (0%, 7%, 10% and 15%) was investigated using a microalgae-bacteria consortium. Two microalgae (Desmodesmus spp. and Scenedesmus obliquus) were used. Nutrient removal, biomass concentration, carbohydrate, lipid and Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAMEs) content and morphological changes were evaluated. Removals of 82% of NH4+ and 43% of orthophosphate from a wastewater-leachate mixture (containing 167 mg/L NH4+ and 23 mg/L PO43-) were achieved. The highest final yield was obtained using Desmodesmus spp. (1.95 ± 0.3 g/L). The microalgae were observed to accumulate high lipid (20%) and carbohydrate (41%) contents under nutrient limiting conditions. The concentration of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) also increased. Morphological changes including the disintegration of coenobia were observed. By using a mixture of wastewater-leachate it is possible to remove nutrients, since microalgae tolerate high ammonia concentrations, and simultaneously increase the algal biomass concentration containing precursors to allow biofuel production.

Bacterial inactivation efficiency of chlorine varies with organisms and environmental conditions. The comparability of different samples/studies, especially comparing indigenous bacterial communities with pure cultures, is impeded by inconsistent experimental conditions and analytical methods used in various studies. We tested a novel 96-well plate FCM experimental and automated analytical approach, where bacterial communities and pure cultures were suspended in the same natural water matrix prior to chlorination directly in the plate. We demonstrated the ability to rapidly monitor the efficiency of 32 different combinations of chlorine concentration and time (i.e. chlorine exposure) on bacterial pure cultures and indigenous aquatic communities, which enabled correct comparison of the data from different samples under the exact same experimental conditions. In this study, the 96-well plate automated FCM approach enabled large sets (896) of independent chlorination experiments to be carried out in a short time period. To our knowledge, this is the largest dataset of chlorination experiments which consumed least time (within 18 h after sampling) until now. Staining with SYBR Green I (SG) and SG combined with propidium iodide (SGPI) was used to assess cellular damage during chlorination. The results showed that with the same chlorine exposure, a higher chlorine concentration with a shorter contact time is favorable for inactivation of bacteria. Our research provides a promising framework to compare disinfection characteristics of various microorganism and can be further developed to diagnose effect of antimicrobial products.

In the present research, a bioremediation process was developed using solid complex bacterial agents (SCBA) through a combined two-step biodegradation process. Four isolated strains showed high efficiency for the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and the reduction of COD of the oily sludge, at 96.6% and 92.6%, respectively. The mixed strains together with bran prepared in form of SCBA exhibited improved performance compared to individual strains, all of which had an optimal temperature of around 35 °C. The use of SCBA provided advantages over commonly used liquid media for storage and transportation. The two-step process, consisting of firstly biosurfactant-assisted oil recovery and secondly biodegradation of the remaining TPH with SCBA, demonstrated the capability for treating oily sludge with high TPH content (> 10 wt%) and short process period (60 days). The large-scale (5 tons oily sludge) field test, achieving a TPH removal efficiency of 93.8% and COD reduction of 91.5%, respectively, confirmed the feasibility and superiority of the technology for industrial applications.

As the antibiotic pollution source in the environment, a large amount of biowastes generated from antibiotic fermentation manufacture needs proper disposal. Recycling the biowaste as resources and nutrients is of great interest. Besides, degradation or removal of antibiotics is indispensable for the reclamation of antibiotic manufacturing biowaste. To establish environmentally friendly disposal strategies for lincomycin manufacturing biowaste (LMB), we screened the microbial strains that could efficiently degrade lincomycin from the antibiotic wastewater treatment plant. Among them, three novel strains were identified as Bacillus subtilis (strain LMB-A), Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (strain LMB-D) and Penicillium oxalicum (strain LMB-E), respectively. LMB-A and LMB-D could degrade 92.69% and 74.05% of lincomycin with an initial concentration of 1117.55 mg/L in 144 h, respectively. The lincomycin degradation products were formed by the breakage of amide bond or losing N-demethyl/thiomethyl group from the pyrrolidine/pyranose ringcata cata catalyzed by the strains. Moreover, LMB-A could decontaminate LMB, and the decontaminated LMB could be used as a nitrogen source to culture salt-resistant bacteria and other useful microorganisms. LMB-A and LMB-D have the potential to be used for the bioremediation of water and soil polluted by lincomycin and its analogs. LMB-E could degrade 88.20% LMB after 144-h cultivation. In summary, this study gives an insight into the green disposal of LMB, and the established strategy has potential application for biotreatment of other antibiotic fermentation manufacturing biowastes.

In recent years, increasing efforts have focused on production of organic-inorganic compound fertilizers using ammonium sulfite pulping waste liquor. However, their ecological effects on soil have not been studied. In this study, earthworm Eisenia fetida was exposed to various doses (0, 0.13, 0.26 and 0.52 kg/m2) for different time (7, 14, 21, and 28 d) to evaluate the effects of fertilizers made from pulping waste liquor, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, antioxidant enzymes activities, glutathione S-transferase enzyme (GST) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and DNA damage. Results showed that there were significant increase of ROS and MDA levels after 14 d, inducing production of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT)) as well as GST. Before 14 d, excess ROS and MDA caused damage to the DNA of earthworms, leading to gradual increase of Olive tail moment (OTM) in the comet assay. With the exposure time extended to 28 d, owing to the combined effects of elimination of free radicals by antioxidant enzymes and detoxification enzymes as well as self-repairing function of cells, ROS and MDA levels declined slightly and OTM gradually decreased. In summary, this study indicated that there was a toxicological effect on earthworms when fertilizers made from pulping waste liquor were applied to soil, which needs more attention.

The feasibility of growing algae in concentrated wastewater generated from sludge ozonation for simultaneous nutrients removal and biomass production was studied. The effects of bacteria addition into microalgae on nutrients removal, biomass yield and settleability, the growth rate of algae and concentrations of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) were investigated. The results showed that the growth rate of algae in algal-bacteria system (0.2182) was improved than in algae-only system (0.1852), while both of them are comparable with others reported previously. And the addition of bacteria enhanced COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP removal rate by 23.9 ± 3.3%, 27.7 ± 3.6%, 16.6 ± 1.8% and 14.9 ± 2.2%, respectively. And 32.8 ± 0.7% of the TN and 50.3 ± 1.8% of the TP were recycled from ozonated sludge-supernatant (OSS) being absorbed into algal-bacterial biomass. The algal-bacteria system also demonstrated advantages on biomass settleability and heavy metals removal. Finally, the mechanism involving matter exchange and algal-bacteria system on OSS treatment in this study were discussed through evaluation of nutrients, SMP and EPS contents, nitrogen and phosphorus balance.

Exploring an efficient and economical method to remove arsenic from soil is of great practical significance but there were few studies on the combined use of sepiolite and dehydrated sludge as a repair agent to passivate heavy metals. Through soil passivation experiments, arsenic sequential extractions, and analysis of basic physicochemical properties of contaminated soils and repair agents, this study was to explore the applicability of dehydrated sludge–sepiolite compound repair agents and dehydrated sludge individual repair agents to passivate soil arsenic and its passivating effect. After passivation experiment, the best remediation period was 1–10 days. The best cultivated time was 10 day using DS2 repair agent. With a comparison of passivation effect of different repair agents, it was found that the best treatment group in individual repair agents was DS2 (10 days), and the best treatment group in compound repair agents was S1 (1 day). The passivation effect of individual repair agents was better than compound repair agents in 10–days cultivation. In the short term, the repair effect was increasing and then decreasing, thus this experiment was only suitable for use as a short-term repair method. The application of dehydrated sludge combined with sepiolite as repair agents provided a new way for both making full use of dehydrated sludge and controlling metal mobility.

Vermicomposting is a promising method for reusing urban green waste. However, high lignin content in the green waste could hinder the development of earthworm and microorganisms and the vermicomposting process, resulting in a low-quality vermicompost product. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of bamboo biochar addition (at 0%, 3%, and 6% on a dry w/w basis) on the activity of Eisenia fetida and the obtained vermicompost. Biochar addition increased (P 0.05) earthworm biomass, juvenile and cocoon numbers of Eisenia fetida, as well as the activities of dehydrogenase, cellulase, urease and alkaline phosphatase. Compared to the control, lignin degradation rate was enhanced up to 13.89% by biochar addition. Biochar addition also improved the vermicompost quality in terms of cation exchange capacity (CEC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) degradation, humification, nitrogen transformation, toxicity to germinating seeds (Brassica rapa L., Chinensis group) and heavy metals concentrations. The 6% bamboo biochar addition rate achieved maturity after 60 days of vermicomposting and resulted in the highest quality vermicompost based on parameters such as CEC, DOC, NH

Antipsychotic (AP) drugs are becoming accumulated in terrestrial and aqueous resources due to their actual consumption. Thus, the search of methods for assessing the contamination load of these drugs is mandatory. The COD is a key parameter used for monitoring water quality upon the assessment of the effect of polluting agents on the oxygen level. Thus, the present work aims to assess the chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels of several typical and atypical antipsychotic drugs in order to obtain structure-activity relationships. It was implemented the titrimetric method with potassium dichromate as oxidant and a digestion step of 2h, followed by the measurement of remained unreduced dichromate by titration. After that, an automated sequential injection analysis (SIA) method was, also, used aiming to overcome some drawbacks of the titrimetric method. The results obtained showed a relationship between the chemical structures of antipsychotic drugs and their COD values, where the presence of aromatic rings and oxidable groups give higher COD values. It was obtained a good compliance between the results of the reference batch procedure and the SIA system, and the APs were clustered in two groups, with the values ratio between the methodologies, of 2 or 4, in the case of lower or higher COD values, respectively. The SIA methodology is capable of operating as a screening method, in any stage of a synthetic process, being also more environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. Besides, the studies presented open promising perspectives for the improvement of the effectiveness of pharmaceutical removal from the waste effluents, by assessing COD values.

This paper proposes a green environment-friendly Bacillus subtilis to mineralize and consolidate waste incineration fly ash and heavy metal cations, and there is no harmful by-product in the mineralization process. Different phosphate products can be prepared, and are more stable than the microbially-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) in nature. Typical heavy metal oxides were mainly PbO, ZnO, CdO, NiO, CuO and Cr2O3 in the chemical composition of waste incineration fly ash. Microstructure and chemical composition of waste incineration fly ash before and after treatment were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the morphology of the Bacillus subtilis was mainly a rod-like structure. The optimal hydrolysis dosage of the organic phosphate monoester sodium salt was 0.2mol in the bacterial solution (1L, 20 g/L). The optimum required mass of the bacterial powder was 15 g/kg in treatment process of the waste incineration fly ash. The initial concentration of lead ions was 40.28 mg/L in waste incineration fly ash solution. After the optimum dosage treatment, the removal efficiency of lead ions was 78.15%, 79.64%, 77.70% and 80.14% when curing time was 1, 2, 4 and 6d, respectively. The waste incineration fly ash had a Shore hardness of 22 after the optimum amount of bacterial liquid treatment. Results of wind erosion test showed that the wind erosion rate of waste incineration fly ash was 2.6, 0, 0, 0, 0 and 0 g/h when blank group, deionized water, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mL of bacterial solutions treated, respectively. The bio-mineralization method provides an approach for the safe disposal of heavy metals in the contaminated areas of tailings, electroplating sewage, waste incineration plants, and so on.

The development of new methods for identifying a broad spectrum of analytes, as well as highly selective tools to provide the most accurate information regarding the processes and relationships in the world, has been an area of interest for researchers for many years. The information obtained with these tools provides valuable data to complement existing knowledge but, above all, to identify and determine previously unknown hazards. Recently, attention has been paid to the migration of xenobiotics from the surfaces of various everyday objects and the resulting impacts on human health. Since children are among those most vulnerable to health consequences, one of the main subjects of interest is the migration of low-molecular-weight compounds from toys and products intended for children. This migration has become a stimulus for research aimed at determining the degree of release of compounds from popular commercially available chocolate/toy sets. One of main objectives of this research was to determine the impact of time on the ecotoxicity (with Vibrio fischeri bioluminescent bacteria) of extracts of products intended for children and to assess the correlation with total volatile organic compound emissions using basic chemometric methods. The studies on endocrine potential (with XenoScreen YES/YAS) of the extracts and showed that compounds released from the studied objects (including packaging foils, plastic capsules storing toys, most of toys studied and all chocolate samples) exhibit mostly androgenic antagonistic behavior while using artificial saliva as extraction medium increased the impact observed. The impact of time in most cases was positive one and increased with prolonging extraction time. The small-scale stationary environmental test chambers - μ-CTE™ 250 system was employed to perform the studies aimed at determining the profile of total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) emissions. Due to this it was possible to state that objects from which the greatest amounts of contaminants are released are plastic containers (with emission rate falling down from 3273 to 2280 ng/g of material at 6 h of conditioning in elevated temperature).

The presence of emergent antibiotics, in livestock wastewater may affect constructed wetlands (CWs) performance in the removal of other pollutants. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of two antibiotics commonly used in livestock industry, enrofloxacin and ceftiofur, on metal removal by CWs. Microcosms (0.4 m×0.3 m×0.3 m), simulating CWs, were constructed with Phragmites australis to treat livestock wastewater spiked or not with 100 µg/L of enrofloxacin or ceftiofur (individually or in mixture). Wastewater was treated during 20 one-week cycles. After one-week cycle wastewater was removed and replaced by new wastewater (with or without spiking). At weeks 1, 2, 4, 8, 14, 18 and 20, treated wastewater was analysed to determine the removal rates of metals (Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn) and of each antibiotic. At weeks 1, 8 and 20 portions of the plant root substrate were collected and metals determined. At the end of the experiment metal levels were also determined in plant tissues. Removal rate of Fe from wastewater was 99%. Removal rates of Cu and Zn were higher than 85% and 89%, respectively, whereas for Mn removal rates up to 75% were obtained. In general, no significant differences were observed through time in the removals of the different metals, indicating that the systems maintained their functionality during the experimental period. Antibiotics did not interfere with the system depuration capacity, in terms of metals removals from wastewater, and ceftiofur even promoted metal uptake by P. australis. Oil pollution is a serious international concern due to its harmful effect on human health and the environment. This study aims to investigate the effective factors on the biodegradation of Iranian heavy crude oil by Bacillus licheniformis. For this purpose, oil removal from the artificial seawater was studied by response surface methodology (RSM). After the screening experiments, pH (4–10), NaCl concentration (0–10 g/L), and oil concentration (500–4500 ppm) were selected as influential factors. Moreover, to evaluate the bacterial capability in bioremediation of an actual polluted site, crude oil spill with a salinity of 35 g/L was experimentally simulated. The proposed model in this study clearly shows that both selected individual factors and their interactions are significantly effective on the crude oil biodegradation capacity. The results showed that Bacillus licheniformis was able to degrade crude oil at different concentrations of oil, especially at low concentrations, which are challenging in actual polluted sites. 15%–66% removal was achieved for 500–4500 ppm of crude oil after 14 days. Furthermore, according to the obtained results, this bacterium can tolerate the salinity up to 3.5%. At this salinity level, crude oil removal was 23.43 and 25.64% in neutral and alkaline conditions, respectively. Process factors were optimized, and 54.8% of crude oil was removed at optimum conditions i.e., 3500 ppm crude oil concentration, 2.5 g/L of NaCl and pH equal to 8.5. Finally, it can be concluded that the selected bacterium of this study can be more effective in harsh environments such as hypersaline and alkaline conditions.

Feather analysis has been widely used as a biomonitoring tool to assess metal contamination in birds, as their sampling is a non-destructive and ethically preferable technique. However, for feathers to be useful as a biomonitor of heavy metals, exogenous contamination has to be efficiently removed. Although much effort has been put into this, no washing procedure has yet proven able to ensure the total removal of the surface-associated metals. The purpose of this study was to propose an efficient washing procedure of feather samples prior to metal analysis, on the basis of comparison of various washing schemes designed according to previous analytical trials, and of the verification of the efficacy of the optimal scheme in cleaning intentionally contaminated feathers. Our investigation showed that dilute nitric acid alone or in combination with a detergent (Extran) or acetone under mild agitation of the samples performed better that any other cleaning scheme applied. Thus, a multi-step procedure including the sequential use of all three reagents was tested against feather samples contaminated by adsorbed or particulate metal species. The procedure was able to completely eliminate the external metal loads in all cases except for the partial removal of severe contamination with adsorbed Cd.

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are one of the treatment technologies with the potential to remove emerging compounds from wastewater. The present work evaluated the efficiency of an MBR pilot system in removing amoxicillin from synthetic wastewater using a continuous flow pre-denitrification MBR (A/O-MBR) pilot unit. The system operated in three phases: (1) synthetic wastewater and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 40 h; (2) adding amoxicillin 100 μg L−1 to the influent, and (3) varying flowrate to HRT of 20 h. Liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry analysis confirmed the presence of five amoxicillin degradation by-products in the effluent. The addition of amoxicillin did not affect chemical oxygen demand (COD) or dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal efficiencies. Respirometry showed that amoxicillin level did not inhibit heterotrophic bacteria metabolism. The change in HRT reduced the DOC removal (from 84% to 66%) but did not influence COD (>94%) or total nitrogen (>72%). The amoxicillin and by-products removal decreased from 80% to 54% with HRT change. Adsorption and biodegradation represented the largest removed fraction of the antibiotic in the A/O-MBR system (68%). Ecotoxicity assays showed P. fluorescens was more resistant and E. coli less resistant to amoxicillin residues at effluent sample matrix.

Huge amounts of fly ash (FA) can be annually produced in power plants. Fly ash always contains high levels of arsenic (As) and selenium (Se) due to the preconcentration of these two elements during coal combustion process. It would be much concerned to screen their fractions and potential environmental behaviors in fly ash for beneficial use and treatment. Fast and practical methods for this purpose are urgently needed. Two fast and effective microwave-assisted sequential extraction schemes (MASE) were developed for fast screening As and Se fractions in fly ash for the first time. The extraction parameters including microwave irradiation time, temperature and power energy were optimized by comparing the results from MASE and the conventional scheme (Wenzel method). The results indicate that the extraction efficiency of As and Se in various fractions can be significantly accelerated by microwave irradiation. The whole procedure operation time can be significantly reduced from 24.5 h to 44 min by microwave assistance compared with the conventional shaking schemes. The recoveries of As and Se in the various extracted fractions were all above 80% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 8%. The developed methods were further confirmed by the validation of the certified reference material GBW08401 and fly ash samples from six power plants. The developed MASE methods are practical and effective for fast screening arsenic and selenium fractions in fly ash samples.

Pulp and paper mill effluent compounds pollute the aquatic environment and are responsible for increased biochemical alterations and genotoxicity in aquatic organisms such as fish. Adult eels (Anguilla anguilla L) were exposed during 8, 16, 24, and 72 h to the following conditions: (1) aerated, filtered, and dechlorinated tap water (C); (2) 2.5% (v/v) sewage water previously treated with activated sludge (T); (3) bleached kraft pulp and paper mill effluent collected at the river Vouga, close to an ancient sewage outlet (Portucel), diluted in tap water [25% (E25) and 50% (E50)]; and (4) bleached kraft pulp and paper mill effluent sediment [water-soluble fraction (S)]. Liver biotransformation induced by the above conditions was measured as ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), cytochrome P450 (P450) (Phase I), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) (Phase II). Genotoxicity was also determined as blood/liver DNA strand breaks and erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA) induced on European eel (A. anguilla L). Liver EROD activity was significantly increased in eels at 8 and 16 h exposure to E25, as well as at 16, 24, and 72 h exposure to E50. S exposure induced liver EROD activity only at 24h. A significant decrease in liver P450 was observed at 72 h exposure to T, whereas a significant P450 increase at 16 h was followed by a significant decrease at 24h exposure to E25. Another P450 significant increase was noticed at 72 h exposure to S. Liver GST activity (Phase II) demonstrated a significant increase at 72 h exposure to E50 and to S. A significant decrease in blood DNA integrity was observed at 72 h exposure to T and at 24 and 72 h to S. Blood DNA integrity significantly decreased at 16 and 24 h exposure to E25, as well as at 8, 16, and 24 h exposure to E50. Liver DNA integrity significantly decreased at 72 h exposure to T and at 16 h exposure to S. Moreover, liver DNA integrity was significantly decreased at 24h exposure to E25 and E50, and 72 h to E50. A. anguilla L. increased ENA frequency was detected in T at 16, 24, and 72 h, whereas in E25 and S it was observed at 8, 16, and 24 h. Furthermore, E50 ENA frequency increased at 24 h exposure.

In this study, lipid peroxidation and DNA methylation were observed in erythrocytes of Oreochromis niloticus exposed to soluble fractions of textile, metal–mechanic and pulp and paper industrial waste, after a period of 48 h. Lipid peroxidation was quantified by the rate of malondialdehyde (MDA) and DNA methylation was quantified by the rate of 5-methyldeoxycytosine (m5dC). Soluble fractions of textile industrial waste caused metabolic changes for all studied samples. In organisms exposed to samples TX1 and TX2 (textile waste) MDA rates were 132.36 and 140.28 nM MDA/mg protein, respectively, while in control organism the MDA rates were 27.5 nM MDA/mg protein. All samples from soluble fractions of textile industrial waste induced increases in m5dC rates, increases varied between 300 percent and 700 percent when compared to the control organism. All the organisms exposed to soluble fractions of metal–mechanic industrial waste presented increases between 360 percent and 600 percent in the rates of MDA, and one of them (sample MM3) induced an increase of 180 percent in the rate of m5dC, when compared to control. Although a significant increase was not observed in the MDA rate of fish exposed to the soluble fractions of pulp and paper industrial waste, there was an increase of 460 percent in the rate of m5dC in one of the samples (sample PP2), when compared to control. The results showed that the soluble fractions of these industrial wastes are capable of inducing oxidative damage and altering the DNA methylation of O. niloticus. Thus, the MDA and m5dC rates demonstrated to be effective biomarkers of exposure, which could be used to evaluate the toxicity of soluble fractions of industrial solid waste.

The main byproduct of the sugarcane industry, Saccharum officinarum L. bagasse (sugarcane bagasse, SCB), is widely used as lignocellulose biomass for bio-ethanol (EtOH) production. In this research study, SCB was pretreated by steam explosion (SE) method using two different impregnating agents: sulfur dioxide (SD) and hydrogen peroxide (HP). As matter of fact, the use of impregnating agents improves the performance of SE method, increasing the concentrations of fermentable sugars after enzymatic saccharification, and decreasing the inhibitor compounds produced during the steam pretreatment step. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the use of the two impregnating agents in various SE-conditions in order to optimize pretreatment parameters. For every pretreatment condition, it has been evaluated: concentration of fermentable sugars, glucose and xylose yields, and the effects of the inhibitor compounds on enzymatic hydrolysis step. The obtained results allow to improve the efficiency of the whole process of bio-EtOH synthesis enhancing the amount of fermentable sugars produced and the eco-sustainability of the whole process. Indeed, the optimization of steam pretreatment leads to a reduction of energy requirements and to a lower environmental impact.

Smelting wastewater is characterized with high concentration of toxic heavy metals and high acidity, which must be properly treated before discharge. Here, bioelectrochemical system (BES) coupled with thermoelectric generator (TEG) was first demonstrated to simultaneously treat organic wastewater and smelting wastewater by utilizing the simulated waste heat that was abundant in smelting factories. By modulating the input voltage generated from simulated waste heat via TEG to 0, 1.0 and 2.0 V, almost all the Cu2+, Cd2+ and Co2+ in smelting wastewater were sequentially recovered with a respective rate of 121.17, 158.20 and 193.87 mg L−1 d−1. Cu2+ was bioelectrochemically recovered as Cu0. While, Cd2+ and Co2+ were recovered by electrodeposition as Cd(OH)2, CdCO3 or Co(OH)2 on cathodic surface. High throughput sequencing analysis showed that the microbial community of anodic biofilm was greatly shifted after successive treatment by batch-mode. Desulfovibrio (17.00%), Megasphaera (11.81%), Geobacter (10.36%) and Propionibacterium (8.64%) were predominant genera in anodic biofilm enriched from activated sludge in BES before treatment. After successive treatment by batch-mode, Geobacter (34.76%), Microbacter (8.60%) and Desulfovibrio (5.33%) were shifted as the major genera. Economic analysis revealed that it was feasible to use TEG to substitute electrical grid energy to integrate with BES for wastewater treatment. In addition, literature review indicated that it was not uncommon for the coexistence of waste heat with typical pollutants (e.g. heavy metal ions and various biodegradation-resistant organic wastes) that could be treated by BES in different kinds of factories or geothermal sites. This study provides novel insights to expand the application potentials of BES by integrating with TEG to utilize widespread waste heat.

The high-concentration wastewater produced in the industrial reverse osmosis (RO) process contains a large amount of refractory organic matters, which will have serious impacts on the natural environment and human health. Among them, contaminants can be transformed by humus-reducing bacteria based on humus. In this study, O3- assisted UV-Fenton method was applied as pretreatment. Biological activated carbon (BAC) technology in which humus-reducing bacteria were the dominant bacteria, enhanced by electron donor and Fe3+, was used to dispose of RO concentrate (ROC). The results showed that water treatment process combining oxidation with biological filtration had a positive effect on the removal of stubborn contaminants in ROC. The system was strengthened by adding electron donor and Fe3+, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was up to 80.1%. However, when the removal efficiency of UV254 absorbing pollutants reached optimal value (87.3%), that means only Fe3+ was added.

In the study, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were examined in wastewater and sludge samples to explore the effect of cephalexin (CFX) on the spreading and removal of ARGs in the Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) reactor treating antibiotics wastewater. The result showed that the addition of CFX in the wastewater affected the removal amount of β-lactam ARGs and other types ARGs. Besides, the addition of CFX in the wastewater had no obviously effect on total concentration of targeted ARGs in the sludge, but it was related to the accumulation of some typical ARGs. Based on gene cassette array libraries analysis, the diversity of gene cassettes carried by intI1 gene was increased by the addition of CFX in the wastewater. Furthermore, the co-occurrence patterns between ARGs and bacterial genus were also investigated. The results showed the CFX in the wastewater not only affected the number of potential host bacteria of ARGs, but also changed the types of potential host bacteria of ARGs. The correlation analysis of ARG in influent, effluent and sludge showed that, for blaCTX-M, sul2, qnrS and AmpC genes, their removal amount in EGSB reactor treating antibiotic wastewater system might be enhanced by reducing their concentration in the sludge.

In this study, a novel anaerobic baffled reactor-bioelectricity-Fenton (ABR-BEF) coupling reactor, combining an ABR, microbial fuel cell (MFC), and Fenton system, was used to treat traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater containing catechol. The bio-electrochemical degradation of the catechol reached 99.7% after 8 h at dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 4 mg/L in the cathodic chamber. The removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) reached 91.7%, when the ratio rate was 1 and the DO concentration was 4 mg/L. Moreover, the maximum open-circuit voltage and power density of the coupling reactor reached 424.9 mV and 77.1 mW/m3, respectively. According to the PICRUSt analysis, carbohydrate metabolism took up the most abundant function of metabolism and the enrichment of membrane transporters may relieve TCM wastewater toxicity. These results suggest that the ABR-BEF coupling reactor could be applied as an efficient approach to treat TCM wastewater.

In this study, ultrasonic as a pretreatment coupled with bioleaching was used to enhance sludge dewaterability. Changes in microbial diversity and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) were studied during the combined treatment process. The results show that under optimal conditions, combined ultrasonic and bioleaching treatment led to decreases in the specific resistance of filtration and bioleaching time by 7.59% and 12.5%, respectively, compared with single bioleaching process. Using high pressure filtration system, the water content of sludge cake treated by the combined treatment was decreased to 58.04%, which was 10.04% lower than bioleaching sludge. After combined treatment, the microbial diversity and the total number of bacteria in the sludge decreased significantly, which caused the decreases in the absolute abundance of sulfonamide and tetracycline ARGs by 1.56-1.58 and 0.34-1.23 log units, respectively. However, the decrease in the total bacterial biomass was greater than the decrease in the number of potential hosts carrying the tetracycline ARG, resulting in an increase in the relative abundance of tetracycline gene. Furthermore, this study proposed a mechanism of the dewatering and ARGs, involving the combined ultrasonic and bioleaching treatment: Firstly, ultrasonic cavitation causes extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to fall off the surface of sludge; Secondly, this faster and directly makes bacteria cells affected by bio-acidification and bio-oxidation. In this case, the cells could be more easily destroyed by the combined ultrasonic and bioleaching treatment, compared with individual bioleaching treatment; As a result, stronger dewaterability and more removal rates of ARGs were achieved under the combined treatment. The economic analyses showed that the combined ultrasonic and bioleaching treatment is a more practical and economical technique for achieving deep dewatering of sludge.

Chlorobenzenes (CBs) present in synthetic dyes are discharged into natural waters during the treatment of textile dyeing wastewater, which may have adverse effects on human and environment. In this study, the existence and removal of 12 CBs in different units of five treatment plants were examined. The ecological risk of CBs in textile dyeing wastewater was assessed by ambient severity (AS) and risk quotients (RQs). The results showed that trichlorobenzene, tetrachlorobenzene, pentachlorobenzene and hexachlorobenzene were ubiquitous in textile dyeing wastewater, and their distribution was similar. In one of the plants, the content of hexachlorobenzene was found to be as high as 9.277 μg/L in the raw water, which was an oil-water mixture. In other plants, there was no significant difference in the content and composition of CBs among influent and effluent suggesting that the conventional wastewater treatment plants cannot improve the existence of them. Monochlorobenzene and dichlorobenzene were not detected, which may have been related to strong volatility, biochemical properties, and weak instrument sensitivity. In the treatment process and effluent, trichlorobenzene is the main pollutant and accounted for 39.51% of all CB. CB removal was found only in the anaerobic system, while the aerobic system did not have the corresponding removal effect on CB and total organic carbon. According to ecological risk assessment, CBs in effluent has not been found the significant potential harm to human health (AS 1), but posed moderate ecological risk to aquatic ecosystem (RQs 0.1).

In this study, the characteristics of biodegradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) by strain Ochrobactrum sp. KSS10 were studied under various environmental conditions, including initial OTC concentrations, variable temperature, initial pH, and diverse carbon sources. The capability of this bacterial strain for performing simultaneous OTC degradation and nitrate reduction was also explored under aerobic conditions. An OTC degradation ratio of 63.33% and a nitrate removal ratio of 98.64% were obtained within 96 h. In addition, removal of OTC and ammonia from synthetic aquaculture wastewater by a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) and changes in the resistant genes of microbial communities were also investigated. The results demonstrated that the strain KSS10 was the dominant contributor in OTC and ammonia removal in the MBBR chamber. It removed almost all ammonia and approximately 76.42% of OTC. The abundances of genes tetL, tetX and intI1 were reduced by the MBBR, but the abundance of tetG and tetM were increased due to horizontal and vertical gene transfers. Such a result can potentially be used by the strain KSS10 for removing antibiotics and nitrogen from aquaculture wastewater during pre-treatment.

Cruise ship wastewater discharges are pollution sources towards the marine environment that are poorly characterized. In this study, wastewater samples from cruise ships have been obtained during repair works in a shipyard. Different organic pollutants have been analyzed and their concentrations were similar to those in urban wastewaters for pharmaceuticals and fragrances, but higher for UV filters and PAHs. For the first time, cypermethrin, a pesticide highly toxic towards aquatic species, was found at relevant concentrations (>1 µg L^-1). The faecal microorganisms were for all parameters higher than 10^4 CFU 100 mL^-1, which together with the presence of antibiotic compounds in wastewater (e.g., triclosan), could potentially lead to the generation of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB). The historical position of cruise ships, determined from the Automatic Identification System (AIS), were used to define the time ships were underway, at port, or in repair. From ship's passenger and crew load, and from estimates of discharges the total volume of wastewater produced by these ships (371,000 m^3 year^-1) and the average flow (0.15 ± 0.03 m^3crew^-1 day^-1) were calculated.

In this investigation, petroleum sludge landfilling was carried out in order to assess the biodegradation degree and the final product quality. The microbial analysis showed a good microorganism proliferation which reinforces the biodegradation process. The total mesophilic and thermophilic microflora evaluated symmetrically as they increased at the intermediate stage and decreased at the final. The C/N and NH4+/NO3-ratios decreased while the polymerization degree increased at the end of the landfilling process. The total polyphenols and total petroleum C6 to C22hydrocarbons were removed by 71.6% and 73% respectively, and that affected the reduction of the phytotoxicity in a positive way. All these changes are in agreement with the efficiency of the biotransformation process and showed that petroleum sludge and filling reduced the toxic organic compounds and led to a stable final product.

Textile dyeing wastewater was the focus of much research because of its adverse effect on aquatic biota. In the present research, textile dyeing influent and effluent samples were collected from four textile dyeing wastewater treatment plants (TDPs) in Guangdong province, China, and their conventional indicators and toxicity were examined to reveal relationships. The relationship between toxicity and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was clearly established at individual TDPs. Results indicated the highest removal efficiencies of 94.4%, 90.6%, 91.9%, 94.6%, 92.8% and 97.5% for TOC, mixed-liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS), COD, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total phosphorus (TP) and colour, respectively. The primary clarifier used in TDP3 and TDP4 was beneficial for removing macromolecular organic substances, and membrane filtration and sedimentation basin employed at TDP1 and TDP2, respectively, helped to remove toxic substances. Toxicity to V. fischeri or D. subspicatus was found to be related to certain conventional indicators such as TOC, COD, TP, colour, and MLVSS, and was positively correlated with COD in different textile dyeing effluents (R2 > 0.84). It was recommended that the relationship between toxicity and COD in wastewater should be established individually at each plant. Therefore, this study could be useful in providing suggestions for guiding effluent management when no toxicity experiments were conducted.

In the bioethanol industry and its derivative processes, 9–14 l of vinasse per liter of ethanol are obtained as residue, depending on whether or not a recirculation process is used. If the vinasse is discharged directly into water bodies without proper treatment it can produce negative effects on existing biota and on human health. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of a mixed treatment with Komagataeibacter kakiaceti GM5 and Trametes versicolor DSM 3086 to degrade and reduce the toxicity of this by-product. In order to carry out the tests, an experimental culture media of vinasse at 60% (v/v) was used. This culture was compared to a standard medium of glucose at 2% and, simultaneously, a mixed culture (bacterium-fungus) was used through a batch process in an orbital shaker. When compared to the treatments evaluated with individually grown microorganisms, the mixed treatment proposed produced the best COD results in vinasse degradation. However, better results were obtained when using the treatment with T. versicolor DSM 3086 for color removal and treatment with K. kakiaceti GM5 produced better results in terms of turbidity and toxicity. Although the simultaneous mixed treatment did not improve all the variables studied, it never showed the lowest performance. Therefore, this proposal can be considered as an innovative biological alternative in degradation processes of great organic pollutants such as vinasse.

Coagulation-nanofiltration based integrated treatment scheme was employed in the present study to maximize the removal of toxic Cr(VI) species from tannery effluents. The coagulation pretreatment step using aluminium sulphate hexadecahydrate (alum) was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). A nanofiltration unit was integrated with this coagulation pre-treatment unit and the resulting flux decline and permeate quality were investigated. Herein, the coagulation was conducted under response surface-optimized operating conditions. The hybrid process demonstrated high chromium(VI) removal efficiency over 98%. Besides, fouling of two of the tested nanofiltration membranes (NF1 and NF3) was relatively mitigated after feed pretreatment. Nanofiltration permeation fluxes as high as 80-100L/m(2)h were thereby obtained. The resulting permeate stream quality post nanofiltration (NF3) was found to be suitable for effective reuse in tanneries, keeping the Cr(VI) concentration (0.13mg/L), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) (65mg/L), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) (142mg/L), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) (108mg/L), Total Solids (TS) (86mg/L) and conductivity levels (14mho/cm) in perspective. The process water reclaiming ability of nanofiltration was thereby substantiated and the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid system was thus affirmed.

In this study, laboratory scale experiments were performed to degrade highly concentrated organic matter in the form of color in the distillery spent wash through batch oxidative methods such as electrocoagulation (EC), electrofenton (EF) and Fenton process. The effect of corresponding operating parameters, namely initial pH: 2–10; current intensity: 1–5 A; electrolysis time: 0.5–4 h; agitation speed: 100–500 rpm; inter-electrode distance: 0.5–4 cm and Fenton's reagent dosage: 5–40 mg/L was employed for optimizing the process of spent wash color removal. The performance of all the three processes was compared and assessed in terms of percentage color removal. For EC, 79% color removal was achieved using iron electrodes arranged with 0.5 cm of inter-electrode space and at optimum conditions of pH 7, 5 A current intensity, 300 rpm agitation speed and in 2 h of electrolysis time. In EF, 44% spent wash decolorization was observed using carbon (graphite) electrodes with an optimum conditions of 0.5 cm inter-electrode distance, pH 3, 4 A current intensity, 20 mg/L FeSO4 and agitation speed of 400 rpm for 3 h of electrolysis time. By Fenton process, 66% decolorization was attained by Fenton process at optimized conditions of pH 3, 40 mg/L of Fenton's reagent and at 500 rpm of agitation speed for 4 h of treatment time.

Surfactants are widely used in household and industrial products for cleaning and/or solubilization in our daily life. Therefore, they are finally discharged into wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which may be the major point pollution source for environment if they were not completely removed during wastewater treatment. In this study, two typical industrial and domestic WWTPs with different wastewater treatment technologies were considered for the topic. Totally, two types of surfactants were analyzed in 24 h influent and each processing unit effluent. Four linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LASs) with the alkyl chain from C10 to C13, and two benzalkonium chlorides (BACs) with the alkyl chain of C12 and C14 were selected as target compounds. The total concentrations of LASs in influent varied from 19.2 to 1889 μg/L and LAS-C11 and LAS-C12 were the predominant compounds with the concentration from 6.01 to 641 μg/L and 8.02–674 μg/L, respectively. The total concentrations of BACs were much lower than those of LASs, with the concentration ranging from 0.00935 to 1.85 μg/L. Significant positive correlations were observed between concentrations of LASs and BACs in influent, indicating their same and/or similar sources. Compared with the concentration of influent, the concentration of effluent was much lower, indicating the high removal efficiency by the two wastewater treatment processes. Biological treatment unit and cyclic activated sludge system were the main treatment units for the removing of surfactants, which suggested that these two types of surfactants can be easily degraded under aerobic condition. Seasonal variation indicated that the removal efficiencies of surfactants in autumn were a little higher than those in winter. The results of this study provided new insights into the environmental fate of surfactants in wastewater treatment system.

Peat is an excellent material for metal sorption since it naturally contains different kinds of functional groups that can sorb metal cations from water. The main objective of this work was to test low-cost treatment (acid and alkali) methods for natural peat, which would improve the settling properties of peat particles while maintaining its metal removal efficiency. Particularly, the poor settling properties of peat hinder its practical application. The study revealed that NaOH-treated peat (0.1 M) had excellent settling properties and could be applied in wastewater applications having mixing and settling systems without a settling aid. The superior leaching of humic and fulvic acids in alkaline treatment caused a change in morphology, making it a harder and sticky material. Moreover, the NaOH-treated (0.1 M) peat was proven to be the most efficient material for nickel removal followed by the HCl-treated (0.2 M) peat, citric acid-treated (0.16 M) peat and water-treated peat. A higher temperature and longer time slightly increased the Ni removal efficiency with NaOH-treated peat material. The settling of HCl-treated peat was studied further using polyacrylamide flocculants (cationic, neutral, anionic). Cationic flocculants performed best and the cationic charge density also had an effect on the flocculation performance of peat particles. This study provides further evidence that peat can be applied in the treatment of metal-containing wastewaters.

Emerging contaminants (EC's) are pollutants of growing concern. They are mainly organic compounds such as: pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, hormones, plasticizers, food additives, wood preservatives, laundry detergents, surfactants, disinfectants, flame retardants, and other organic compounds that were found recently in natural wastewater stream generated by human and industrial activities. A majority of ECs does not have standard regulations and could lead to lethal effects on human and aquatic life even at small concentrations. The conventional primary and secondary water treatment plants do not remove or degrade these toxic pollutants efficiently and hence need cost effective tertiary treatment method. Adsorption is a promising method worldwide for EC removal since it is low initial cost for implementation, highly-efficient and has simple operating design. Research has shown that the application of different adsorbents such as, activated carbons(ACs), modified biochars (BCs), nanoadsorbents (carbon nanotubes and graphene), composite adsorbents, and other are being used for EC's removal from water and wastewater. The current review intends to investigate adsorption process as an efficient method for the treatment of ECs. The mechanism of adsorption has also been discussed.
