This article presents response of the authors on comments made by various economists on the paper "Inflation and Philanthropy in England: A Re-assessment of W.K. Jordan's Data" that was published in a 1976 issue of the periodical "Economic History Review." The flurry of comment provoked by the paper seems clearly to establish that, although considerable time has passed since the publication of economist W.K. Jordan's various works, they remain as controversial now as ever with regard to two major points, the immense generosity thesis and the real value of the charitable benefactions of the age. As Professor D.C. Coleman quite correctly points out, and as the authors just as pointedly stated in the paper. Jordan's work has come under considerable fire for his conscious disregard of inflationary pressures. Indeed, so long and so continuous has been this stream of criticism that the most amazing thing about the whole affair is that it has taken so long for someone to undertake an orderly analysis of the inflationary effect. Coleman is offended by their curious failure to cite his and Professor L. Stone's reviews, suggesting the application of the Phelps Brown-Hopkins index. The simple fact is that the authors were unaware of them. The procedure was so obvious and has been suggested so often that a search of seventeen-year-old book reviews hardly seemed relevant to the task at hand.
