The solvothermal reactions of ZnCl2·6H2O, benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoic acid (H3btb), and N-heterocyclic ancillary imidazole (Im) or aminopyrimidine (a mp) ligands led to the creation of two-dimensional (2D) zinc(II) based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), (Me2NH2)2[Zn2(btb)2(Im)2]·2DMF·3MeOH (1) and (Me2NH2)2[Zn2(btb)2(amp)]·H2O·2DMF·MeOH (2). The btb3− ligands in 1 and 2 form an anionic 2D layered structure with a (63) honeycomb (hcb) topology by linking to Zn(II) centres through their carboxylate groups. The incorporation of N-heterocyclic auxiliary ligands Im and amp into the hcb nets resulted in the formation of a 2D hydrogen-bonded and covalently pillared bilayer structure featuring two-fold interpenetrating networks. Each of these networks consists of small channels that are occupied by Me2NH2 cations and solvent molecules. Both 1 and 2 emit blue luminescence emissions in the solid state at room temperature and exhibit a great selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of acetone and multiple heavy metal ions including Hg2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions. At 1 bar, activated 1 and 2 demonstrate moderate capacities for adsorbing CO2 at room temperature, with a preference for CO2 over N2. Post-synthetic modification of proton-conducting metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by loading small molecules capable of generating protons into pores is an efficient approach for developing a new type of material with improved ionic conductivity. Herein, the synthesis, characterization and proton conductivity of a novel electroneutral MOF based on palladium(II) meso-tetrakis(4-(phosphonatophenyl))porphyrinate, IPCE-1Pd, are reported. The exposure of the obtained framework to imidazole by the diffusion vapor method has surprisingly led to its complete crystal-to-crystal MOF-to-HOF transformation, resulting in the formation of a novel hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) IPCE-1Pd_Im, which is the first example of such kind of structural change among all known MOFs. This modification has led to an almost 25-fold increase in the proton conductivity in comparison with the pristine MOF, reaching up to 6.54 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 85 °C and 95% relative humidity, which is one of the highest values among all known porphyrin-based HOFs. The effects exerted by new bioactive acylpyrazolonate Ag(I) derivatives of the general formula [Ag(QPy,CF3)(R-Im)] containing different substituents on the imidazole (R-Im) ancillary ligands and the natural plasticizer castor oil when both are added to the ethylcellulose (EC) biopolymer in the preparation of thin films as potential active food packaging materials are presented. The Ag(I) complexes [Ag(QPy,CF3)(Bn-Im)] and [Ag(QPy,CF3)(Bu-Im)], having benzyl and butyl substituents, whose single crystal molecular structures are reported, have proved to be highly compatible for efficient incorporation between the EC polymer and the hydrophobic plasticizer chains, giving rise, even at low concentrations, to homogeneous, robust and elastic films. The concomitant presence of these Ag(I) complexes and castor oil in the polymer EC matrix gives rise to thin films with improved antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a model of Gram-negative bacterial strains when compared to the non-plasticized ones, with very low Ag(I) migration in the three food simulants used (distilled water, ethanol 10% v/v and acetic acid 3% v/v) under two assay conditions (70 °C for 2 h and 40 °C for 10 days). This contribution describes a study on the reactivities of the complexes [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-Ar}Ni(μ-Br)]2, 1a–d (Ar: C6H4, a; 3-Cl-C6H3, b; 3-OMe-C6H3, c; 4-OMe-napthalenyl, d), with hydroxylamines in the presence of TEMPO˙ (TEMPO˙ = (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-yl)oxyl). The results of this study showed that treating 1a–d with a mixture of Et2NOH and TEMPO˙ did not afford the desired oxidation-induced functionalization of the Ni-aryl moiety in 1a–d, giving instead the corresponding κO-TEMPOH adducts [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-Ar}Ni(Br)(κO-TEMPOH)], 3a–d (TEMPOH = N-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine). The TEMPOH moiety in these zwitterionic compounds 3 can be displaced by a large excess of acetonitrile (MeCN), 10 equiv. of morpholine, or 1–2 equivalents of imidazole. Although these reactions have given the authenticated products [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni(Br)(NCMe)], 4a, [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni(Br)(morpholine)], 5a, and [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni(imidazole)2]Br, 6a, a few other products were also detected by NMR, indicating that the observed reactivities are far more complex than simple substitution of the TEMPOH moiety. Similarly, treating 3a with AgOC(O)CF3 results in the isolation of [{κP,κC-(i-Pr)2PO-C6H4}Ni{OC(O)CF3}(κO-TEMPOH)], 7a, arising from the substitution of the bromo ligand, whereas spectroscopic evidence suggests further reactivity, possibly including displacement of TEMPOH and oxidative decomposition. Zinc(II)-complexes with the general formula [Zn(L)2] containing 8-hydroxyquinoline Schiff bases functionalized with 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole or 1-(3-aminopropyl)-2-methyl-1H-imidazole on 2-position and their respective ligands (HL1 or HL2) were synthesized and characterized by NMR, UV-Vis, FTIR and CD spectroscopies as well as ESI-MS spectrometry. Single crystals of HL2 and [Zn(L1)2]n were analysed by SC-XRD. [Zn(L1)2]n shows a 1D polymeric chain structure of alternating Zn(II) cations and bridging Schiff base ligands, in contrast to previously reported monomeric structures of analogous complexes. DFT calculations were performed to rationalize the polymeric X-ray structure of Zn(L1)2. Results showed that the ligands can bind as bi- or tridentate to Zn(II) and there is the possibility of a dynamic behavior for the complexes in solution. Both ligands and complexes present limited stability in aqueous media, however, in the presence of bovine serum albumin the complexes are stable. Molecular docking simulations and circular dichroism spectroscopic studies suggest binding to this protein in close proximity to the Trp213 residue. Biological studies on a panel of cancer cells revealed that the Zn(II)-complexes have a lower impact on cell viability than cisplatin, except for triple-negative breast cancer cells in which they were comparable. Notwithstanding, they display much higher selectivity towards cancer cells vs. normal cells, than cisplatin. They induce the generation of ROS and DNA double-strand breaks, primarily through apoptosis as the mode of cell death. Overall, the novel Zn(II)-complexes demonstrate improved induction of apoptosis and higher selectivity, particularly for melanoma cells, compared to previously reported analogues, making them promising candidates for clinical application. Immobilization of imidazole molecules as proton carriers into MOFs to facilitate proton conduction is a general strategy for developing high proton conductive materials. Herein, we designed two imidazole substituted phthalic acid ligands and constructed two novel MOFs, {[Zr6(OH)16(H3L1)4]Cl8·20H2O}n [Zr-MOF; H3L1 = 2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl) methylaminoterephthalic acid] and {Gd(HCOO)(H2L2)2}n [Gd-MOF; H3L2 = 5-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylaminoisophthalic acid] and fully studied their porous nature, stability and water-assisted proton conduction. The resulting Zr-MOF exhibits a high proton conductivity of 1.82 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 98% RH and 80 °C, while Gd-MOF has a proton conductivity of 3.01 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 98% RH and 60 °C. A series of nine luminescent iridium(III) complexes with pH-responsive imidazole and benzimidazole ligands have been prepared and characterized. The first series of complexes were of the form [Ir(ppy)2(N^N)]+ or [Ir(ppy)2(C^N)]+ (where ppy is 2-phenylpyridine and N^N is 2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole or 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole and C^N represents a pyridyl-triazolylidene-based N-heterocyclic carbene ligand). For these complexes, the benzimidazole group was either unsubstituted or substituted with electron-withdrawing (Cl) or electron-donating (Me) groups. The second series of complexes were of the form [Ir(phbim)2(N^N)]+ or [Ir(phbim)2(C^N)]+ (where phbim is 2-phenylbenzimidazole and N^N is either 2,2′-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline and C^N is either a pyridyl-imidazolylidene or pyridyl-triazolylidene N-heterocyclic carbene ligand). UV-visible and photoluminescence pH titration studies showed that changing the protonation state of these complexes results in significant changes in the photoluminescence emission properties. The pKa values of prepared complexes were estimated from the spectroscopic pH titration data and these values show that the nature of the pH-sensitive ligands (either main or ancillary ligands) resulted in a significant capacity to modulate the pKa values for these compounds with values ranging from 5.19–11.22. As important building blocks in natural products and organic synthesis, thioethers have a wide range of potential applications. Herein, polyoxometalate-based ionic liquids (POM-ILs-SO3H) derived from N-alkyl imidazole were synthesized and used for the first time for the thiolation of alcohols to construct C–S bonds in a series of benzyl thioethers. This type of POM-ILs-SO3H catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity, providing up to 98% yield of thioether within 1 h at 70 °C. The alkyl chain length of the imidazole had a certain effect on the solubility of the POM-ILs-SO3H catalysts in the reaction solvent, and then affected their catalytic activity. The catalytic system had a wide substrate scope and was suitable for the reaction of tertiary and secondary benzyl alcohols with thiophenols or cycloalkyl thiols. In particular, [PIMPS]3PW12O40 (PIM = 1-propylimidazole, PS = propane sulfonate) as a reversible phase transformation-type catalyst, combining the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, exhibited high activity and good recyclability with only a slight decrease in the yield after five runs. The thermosensing and thermochromic behavior of one of our recently reported terpyridyl-imidazole based ternary europium tris-(β-diketonate) complexes of the composition [Eu(tta)3(tpy-HImzphen)] (tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2′:6′,2′′] terpyridin-4′-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole) has been thoroughly investigated in this work. The said Eu(III) complex exhibits magnificent thermosensing as well as thermochromic properties and can be recommended as an excellent temperature sensor in a wide temperature domain of 273–343 K in terms of both emission intensity ratio (Sm = 5.78% K−1 at Tm = 343 K, δT = 0.012 K) and lifetime values (Sm = 3.36% K−1 at Tm = 333 K, δT = 0.009 K) or even in terms of its emitting color (red at 268 K, violet at 303 K, and blue at 343 K). Additionally, it displays remarkable solvent-induced luminescence behavior by displaying various emitting colors instead of its sole characteristic red emission upon varying the nature of the solvent. Finally, amalgamating these two features, we are able to attain white light emission (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates: x = 0.34, y = 0.38) at 283 K from a single component. A series of tridentate copper(II) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes with imidazole, benzimidazole, and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole azole rings were synthesized and comprehensively characterized via X-ray crystallography, ESI-MS, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-Vis and EPR spectroscopic studies. These complexes were then utilized for the optimization of ketone reduction under sustainable conditions using 2-acetylpyridine and phenylsilane. The relationships between product formation, temperature, reaction time, and catalyst loading for the hydrogenation reactions are covered in detail. Reduction of eighteen different aliphatic, cyclic, and aromatic ketones were demonstrated, which were compatible to produce the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. These systems were used to develop related DNA-hybrid catalytic systems, but only supported weak enantioselectivity. The utilization of hexadentate imidazole-derived diamine-bisphenolate ligands to construct structurally well-defined bimetallic nickel catalysts that enable the mediation of the copolymerization of carbon dioxide with alicyclic epoxides was reported for the first time. A series of dinickel carboxylate/nitrophenolate complexes were facilely prepared through a one-pot procedure and their structures were fully determined by single crystal X-ray structural analysis. Dinickel complexes 1–10 were used as single-component catalysts, and were evaluated for the copolymerization of CO2 and cyclohexene oxide (CHO), for which acetato-incorporated complex 1 was proved to exhibit the best activity. Not only has the controllability of binickel catalyst 1 for CO2/CHO copolymerization been demonstrated, but also an "immortal" character for the same polymerization has been realized. Furthermore, detailed kinetic studies of polymerization catalysis of this type were undertaken, and the kinetics results revealed a first-order dependence on both Ni complex 1 and CHO concentrations. This is a successful example of the introduction of the easily accessible nitrogen-heterocycle group, the imidazole moiety, into phenolate ligands for the development of high-performance homogeneous catalysts towards the bimetallic complex-catalyzed copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides. The synthesis of a homoleptic azide-functionalised Au(I) bis-1,2,3-triazole-5-ylidene complex is reported, starting from a backbone-modified 1,2,3-triazolium salt ligand precursor. The incorporated azide handle allows for a straightforward modification of the complex according to click-chemistry protocols without impacting the steric shielding around the metal center, demonstrating the superiority of the presented triazole ligand framework over imidazole based systems. Employing the SPAAC and the CuAAC reactions, post-modification of the complex is facilitated with two model substrates, while retaining very high antiproliferative activity (nanomolar range IC50 values) in A2780 and MCF-7 human cancer cells. Chiral imidazole-based oxidovanadium tartrates (H2im)2[Δ,Λ-VIV2O2(R,R-H2tart)(R,R-tart)(Him)2]·Him (1, H4tart = tartaric acid, Him = imidazole) and [Λ,Λ-VIV2O2(R,R-tart)(Him)6]·4H2O (2) and their corresponding enantiomers (H2im)2[Λ,Δ-VIV2O2(S,S-H2tart)(S,S-tart)(Him)2]·Him (3) and [Δ,Δ-VIV2O2(S,S-tart)(Him)6]·4H2O (4) were obtained in alkaline solutions. Interestingly, the tartrates chelate with vanadium bidentately through α-alkoxy/α-hydroxy and α-carboxy groups and imidazole coordinates monodentately through nitrogen atom. It is worth noting that complexes 1 and 3 contain both protonated α-hydroxy and deprotonated α-alkoxy groups simultaneously, which have short V–Oα-alkoxy distances [1.976(4)av Å in 1–4] and long V–Oα-hydroxy distances [2.237(3)av Å in 1 and 2.230(2)av Å in 3]. There is an interesting strong intramolecular hydrogen bond [O(11)⋯O(1) 2.731(5) Å] between the two parts in 1 and 3. The protonated V–O distances are closer to the average bond distance in reported FeV-cofactors (FeV-cos, V–Oα-alkoxy 2.156av Å) in VFe proteins, which corresponds to the feasible protonation of coordinated α-hydroxy in R-homocitrate in V-nitrogenase, showing the homocitrate in the mechanistic model for nitrogen reduction as a secondary proton donor. Furthermore, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and IR spectra of 1–4 pointed out the disparity between the characteristic vibrations of the C–O and C–OH groups clearly. EPR experiment and theoretical calculations support +4 oxidation states for vanadium in 1–4. Solution 13C {¹H} NMR spectra and CV analyses exhibited the solution properties for 1 and 2, respectively, which indicates that there should be a rapid exchange equilibrium between the protonated and deprotonated species in solutions. ZIF-67 is a representative type of metal–organic framework (MOF) developed for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) owing to its robust structure in alkaline electrolytes and the presence of the redox-active Co2+ species in the structure. In this work, the improvement of the ORR electrolytic performance of ZIF-67 in its pure phase by optimization of its crystal morphology and crystal facets has been presented. ZIF-67 nanocubes exhibit higher ORR activity than their bulk crystals. The enriched (100) facet in the nanocube crystals provides a higher number of exposed Co2+ sites resulting in improved ORR performances. We designed four ternary lanthanide tris-(β-diketonate) complexes of the form [Ln(tta)3(tpy-HImzphen)], where Ln = LaIII, EuIII, SmIII and TbIII; tta = (2-theonyltrifluoroacetonate) and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2′:6′,2′′]terpyridin-4′-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole. All the complexes have been thoroughly characterized by standard analytical tools and spectroscopic techniques including single crystal X-ray diffraction. In situ generation of the complexes was also monitored via absorption and emission spectroscopy upon incremental addition of the respective lanthanide precursor {Ln(tta)3(H2O)2} to the dichloromethane solution of the terpyridyl-imidazole ligand. The photophysical behaviors of all the complexes were thoroughly investigated via absorption and both steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopic techniques. The emission spectral measurements were carried out at both room temperature and 77 K to understand the deactivation dynamics of the excited states and elucidate the distinctive luminescence responses from the four lanthanide metal ions owing to the introduction of the terpyridyl-based ancillary ligand. Neural network and decision tree-based soft computing techniques are implemented in this work for the thorough analysis of the multichannel anion-sensing characteristics of an Os(II)-bipyridine complex derived from imidazole-4,5-bis(benzimidazole) ligand. With the aid of three imidazole NH protons in its outer coordination sphere, a substantial change in the spectral response as well as OsII/OsIII potential is made possible upon treating with anions of varying basicity. Initial hydrogen bonding between NH protons and anions and thereafter complete proton transfer from the complex backbone probably take place in the process. The deprotonation of the complex by specific anions and restoration to its original form by acid is also reversible. The responsiveness of the new compound is complex enough to imitate multiple sophisticated binary and ternary Boolean logic (BL) functions (NOT logic, combinational logic, traffic signal, set-reset flip-flop logic, and ternary NOR logic) by employing its spectral and redox outputs upon the action of suitable anions and acid in a proper sequence. Executing sensing investigations on altering the amount of the anions within a widespread range is often time-consuming and tedious. To overcome the lacuna, we implemented multiple soft computing techniques, viz., fuzzy logic (FL), artificial neural networks (ANNs), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and decision tree (DT) regression, for the thorough analysis and prediction of the experimentally observed results. Nitrosyl ruthenium complexes are promising platforms for nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO) release, which exert their therapeutic application. In this context, we developed two polypyridinic compounds with the general formula cis-[Ru(NO)(bpy)2(L)]n+, where L is an imidazole derivative. These species were characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, including XANES/EXAFS experiments, and further supported by DFT calculations. Interestingly, assays using selective probes evidenced that both complexes can release HNO on reaction with thiols. This finding was biologically validated by HIF-1α detection. The latter protein is related to angiogenesis and inflammation processes under hypoxic conditions, which is selectively destabilized by nitroxyl. These metal complexes also presented vasodilating properties using isolated rat aorta rings and demonstrated antioxidant properties in free radical scavenging experiments. Based on these results, the new nitrosyl ruthenium compounds showed promising characteristics as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis, deserving further investigation. Bio-compatible water-soluble conjugates of Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) (1–3), [Co(Boc- L -valine)2(imidazole)2], [Cu(Boc- L -valine)2(imidazole)2], and [Zn(Boc- L -valine)2(imidazole)2], were synthesized and comprehensively characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (UV–visible, FT-IR, ESI-MS, EPR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR) and single crystal X-ray diffraction which showed that the complexes 1–3 crystallized in an orthorhombic crystal system, in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry having the space group P21212. Density functional theory calculations were performed to correlate the energy of frontier molecular orbitals with the stability and reactivity of the complexes. In vitro DNA binding interaction studies of complexes were performed by employing various biophysical techniques and their corroborative results revealed (i) the electrostatic mode of binding in the groove region of DNA, (ii) pBR322 plasmid cleavage at a low concentration of 5–12.5 μM via an oxidative pathway in complexes 1 and 2 and the hydrolytic mechanism in the case of 3, (iii) changes in the 1H NMR chemical shift values of the NH2 group of GMP after interaction with complex 3, (iv) alteration in the EPR parameters of complex 2 after complexation with DNA, (v) SOD mimetic activity of complex 2 with the IC50 value of 2.08 μM and (vi) a good and selective cytotoxicity profile against chemo-resistant MCF-7 and MDA–MB–231 cancer cell lines by complex 1. In this study, flower-like porous iron doped bismuth oxybromide on porous activated carbon visible light catalysts (BiOBr/Fe@AC) were prepared by a reactive imidazole ionic liquid surfactant assisted solvothermal process. The morphologies, structures, optical properties and photocatalytic properties were investigated in detail. The morphology of the synthesized Fe doped BiOBr composites gradually changed from a regular spherical shape to a non-specific shape with the increase of the alkyl chain length of the ionic liquid surfactants. The photocurrent of BiOBr/Fe@AC composites is greatly influenced by the content of Fe, the type of carbon sphere and the size of the composites. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained BiOBr/Fe@AC composites was evaluated by the degradation of 2-chloroethyl sulfide (CEES) under visible light. The BiOBr/Fe@AC composites exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance compared to that of pure BiOBr and the 10.0% Fe doped BiOBr/Fe@AC composite displayed the highest photocatalytic activity. The main active species were determined to be holes and superoxide radicals by electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis and free radical trapping experiments. The introduction of iron can improve the separation and transfer rate of photoinduced charges. Carbon spheres can enhance light harvesting, improve electron transfer and increase the number of catalytic active sites. The aim of this study has been to offer a method for the synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazole derivatives based on green chemistry principles. Therefore, a one-pot multicomponent cyclocondensation reaction through aldehyde interaction with ammonium acetate and 1,2-diketone under solvent-free conditions was utilized as an eco-effective synthetic route using CoFe2O4@SiO2@(–CH2)3OWO3H NPs as the catalyst. The stabilized tungstic acid on 3-chloropropyl-anchored SiO2-coated CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles was designed, prepared, and applied as a recyclable heterogeneous acid catalyst to attain high product yield in a short reaction time. In the current paper, we have successfully synthesized three new mercury coordination polymers with fascinating structures and properties via a flexible sulfur donor ligand, namely, {[Hg(μ2-Cl)(μ2-Ls)]} n [BF4] n (1), {[Hg(μ2-Cl)(μ2-Ls)]} n [ClO4] n (2), and [Hg(SCN)2(μ2-Ls)] n (3) [Ls = 1,1-bis(3-methyl-4-imidazoline-2-thione)methane]. These complexes have been characterized by means of different techniques such as single crystal X-ray crystallography, FT-IR, elemental analysis (CHNS), UV-Vis, PXRD, BET, and TGA. Suitable single crystals of all complexes were obtained using the branch tube method with a very high yield and good stability due to the high affinity of mercury to bind to the thione groups. The cationic moieties of polymers 1 and 2 were isostructural, with a HgCl2S2 coordination core structure. The voids of the quasi-hexagonal packing of the columnar chains were occupied by unbonded tetrahedral BF4− ions in 1 and perchlorate anions in polymer 2. Polymer 3 has a less distorted tetrahedral geometry than 1 and 2, with a HgS4 core structure. By considering the thiophilicity of mercury, a thioamide-based Ls ligand was used to detoxify Hg(II) into insoluble polymers 1–3. The results of an MTT assay for (HepG2) liver cells confirmed the excellent cytoprotective effect of this ligand against mercury. Based on IC50 calculations, their toxicity was in order of polymer 1 > polymer 2 > polymer 3. These polymers were also considered as adsorbents for the reversible removal of iodine from solution and the kinetics of the process has been studied in detail. In this work, four different bis(imidazole) ligands, namely 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene (bib), 4,4′-bis(1-imidazolyl)biphenyl (bibp), 1,4-bis (imidazol-1-ylmethylene)benzene) (bimb) and 4,4′-bis(imidazol-1-yl)diphenyl ether (bidpe), were used as the second ligand to give rise to the structural diversity of a coordination polymer based on the cobalt-miipa (H2miipa = 5-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl) isophthalic acid) system. In compound 1, miipa2− coordinates to Co(II) atoms to form the Co-miipa 3D network. On introducing linear bis(imidazole) ligands with different lengths and rigidities into the Co(II)-miipa system, the obtained compounds 2–4 form similar three-fold interpenetrating 3D MOFs constructed from the Co(II)-miipa layers pillared by bis(imidazole) ligands. While introducing the V-shaped half-flexible bis(imidazole) ligands, the obtained compound 5 exhibits a 2D double-layered network built from the Co(II)-miipa 1D quadrangular prism linked by the bis(imidazole) ligand. Each 2D double layer is further interlocked with two neighboring ones to produce an interesting 3D framework. Significantly, CoNC-5 derived from a mixture of dicyandiamide (DCD) and compound 5 with a low void volume shows a superior electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction. The Eonset (0.974 V) and E1/2 (0.830 V) of CoNC-5 in O2-saturated 0.1 M KOH at 1600 rpm and 5 mV s−1 are superior to those of Pt/C (0.968 and 0.799 V). In recent years, Ru(II) complexes have gained high importance in medicinal chemistry due to their significant anti-cancer activities, which are directly related to their DNA binding ability. In this report, the chemistry and cytotoxicity of two new Ru(II) complexes containing imidazole pyridine (Ru-1) and imidazole quinoline (Ru-2) have been studied. The prepared compounds were characterized using infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectral techniques. The structural analyses show that the Ru(II) complexes exhibit a 'piano stool' coordination geometry and they are composed of one bound arene, two sigma bonded benzil nitrogen atoms, and labile chlorine linked to Ru(II). The photo-physical properties of these complexes were examined, and they exhibit absorption peaks at 260 nm and 380 nm, which are due to the involvement of intra-ligand charge transitions (ILCT) and metal-to-ligand charge transitions (MLCT), respectively. The binding process of the Ru(II) complexes with DNA and BSA is non-covalent in nature and the binding constants of Ru-1 and Ru-2 complexes with DNA and BSA were found to be 1 × 105 M−1 and 1 × 103 M−1, respectively. In the presence of the Ru(II) complexes, ethidium bromide (EtBr) is competitively displaced from DNA by intercalation of the Ru(II) complexes in DNA and it is well corroborated by viscosity and in silico studies. Both the ligands and Ru(II) complexes were carefully investigated in vitro for cytotoxicity against HeLa, MCF-7, and MDA-MB-231 cells. Surprisingly, both Ru(II) complexes exhibit superior cytotoxicity to cisplatin with a low LD50 value against the examined cancer cells. A series of gold(I) (4a–4h, 5a–5b) and silver(I) (3a–3h) complexes of 1,2,4-triazolylidene and imidazolylidene based N-heterocyclic carbene ligands were prepared and the antibacterial activities of these complexes have been evaluated. The complexes were characterised using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HRMS and in the cases of 3a, 3c, 4b and 5b by X-ray crystallography. The gold(I) complexes with phenyl substituents (4a–4d) were found to have potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, with the complexes of the 1,2,4-triazolylidene ligands being more active (4c, MIC = 4–8 μg mL−1 against Enterococcus faecium and 2 μg mL−1 against Staphylococcus aureus) than the analogous imidazolylidene complexes 4a and 4b (4a, MIC = 64 μg mL−1 against E. faecium and 2–4 μg mL−1 against S. aureus). Two of the silver(I) complexes have promising antibacterial activity against Acinetobacter baumannii (3f, MIC = 2–4 μg mL−1 and 3g, MIC = 2 μg mL−1). Silver(I) complex 3f and gold(I) complex 4c were tested against multi-drug resistant bacterial strains and high levels of antibacterial activity were observed. The potential for antibacterial resistance to develop against these metal containing complexes was investigated and significantly, no resistance was observed upon continuous treatment, whilst resistance was developed against the widely used broad-spectrum antibiotic ciprofloxacin in the same bacterial strains, under the conditions tested. The solution and gas phase stabilities of the complexes have been investigated using a combination of 1H-NMR, HRMS and detailed computational mechanistic studies were undertaken to gain insights into the possible decomposition reactions for silver complexes in aqueous solution. Two new bis-bidentate imidazole-substituted nitronyl nitroxide biradicals, BNITIm-C2 (BNITIm-C2 = 1,1′-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(1H-imidazole-2–4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxy-3-oxide)) and BNITIm-C4 (BNITIm-C4 = 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(1H-imidazole-2–4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxy-3-oxide)), and two series of lanthanide complexes, namely [(BNITIm-C2)Ln(NO3)3](MeOH) (Ln = Gd (1Gd) and Tb (2Tb)), (BNITIm-C2)Dy(NO3)3 (3Dy) and (BNITIm-C4)[Ln(hfac)3]2(C7H8)2 (Ln = Gd (4Gd), Tb (5Tb) and Dy (6Dy), hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate), have been prepared and characterized structurally and magnetically. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed that complexes 1Gd–3Dy exhibit 1D chain structures where the Ln(NO3)3 units are bridged by the BNITIm-C2 bis-bidentate biradical, while complexes 4Gd–6Dy exhibit binuclear structures with two Ln(hfac)3 units bridged by the BNITIm-C4 biradical. The bulky hfac anions prohibit the further coordination of LnIII to another NIT ligand and the formation of a similar 1D chain structure. Due to the very long intra- and intermolecular distances of the spin centers, complexes 1Gd–3Dy can be magnetically regarded as an isolated 2p–4f–2p tri-spin system while complex 4Gd–6Dy can be regarded as an isolated 2p–4f bi-spin system. Magnetic analyses on the two GdIII compounds revealed the ferromagnetic GdIII–NIT interactions and antiferromagnetic NIT–NIT interactions through the GdIII ion in 1Gd. Alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility investigations revealed that complex 5Tb exhibits the typical SMM behavior under a zero dc field while complex 6Dy was proved to be a field-induced SMM. The ability of 1-hydroxy-1H-imidazoles to undergo proton transfer processes and to exist in N-hydroxy and N-oxide tautomeric forms can be used in coordination chemistry for the design of ESIPT-capable complexes. A series of ESIPT-capable zinc(II) complexes [Zn(HL)Hal2] (Hal = Cl, Br, I) with a rationally designed ESIPT-ligand 1-hydroxy-5-methyl-2,4-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (HL) featuring spatially separated metal binding and ESIPT sites have been synthesized and characterized. Crystals of these compounds consist of a mixture of two isomers of [Zn(HL)Hal2]. Only a major isomer has a short intramolecular hydrogen bond O–H⋯N as a pre-requisite for ESIPT. In the solid state, the complexes [Zn(HL)Hal2] demonstrate temperature- and excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence in the cyan region due to the interplay of two intraligand fluorescence channels with excited state lifetimes spanning from 0.2 to 4.3 ns. The coordination of HL by Zn2+ ions results in an increase in the photoluminescence efficiency, and the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the complexes reach 12% at λex = 300 nm and 27% at λex = 400 nm in comparison with the PLQY of free HL of ca. 2%. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that N-hydroxy–N-oxide phototautomerization is both thermodynamically and kinetically favourable in the S1 state for [Zn(HL)Hal2]. The proton transfer induces considerable geometrical reorganizations and therefore results in large Stokes shifts of ca. 230 nm. In contrast, auxiliary ESIPT-incapable complexes [ZnL2][Zn(OAc)2]2·2H2O and [ZnL2][ZnCl2]2·4H2O with the deprotonated ligand exhibit excitation wavelength independent emission in the violet region with the Stokes shift reduced to ca. 130 nm. The key problem of the instability of fluorine-containing diazadienes was addressed to perform the efficient synthesis of imidazolium salts containing fluorine substituents in the aryl groups. The subsequent reaction of fluorine-containing imidazolium compounds (NHCF) with palladium salts under simple conditions afforded new Pd/NHCF complexes. Computational and structural studies were performed to assess the effect of fluorine on the Pd–NHC bond and gave insight into the electronic effects in the molecule. The introduction of fluorine substituents into the aryl rings of the NHC ligands leads to a slight decrease in their σ-donor properties. At the same time, there is a slight increase in the π-acceptor capacity of NHCF. These two effects compensate for each other, so that the Pd–NHC bonding energy remains virtually unchanged. Another observed effect is associated with a slight weakening of the trans influence of the NHCF ligands, which is expressed in the strengthening of the Pd–Solv bond in (NHC)Pd(Solv) complexes. Herein we report the synthesis of three light emitting rod-shaped gold(I) complexes by combining ethynyl-functionalized 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD), with different N-heterocyclic (imidazole, benzimidazole and phenantroimidazole) carbene gold(I) complexes. As could be determined by single crystal structure determination, the size of the N-heterocyclic carbene affects the relative disposition of the two ligands in the linear gold complexes (nearly perpendicular in the benzimidazole vs. planar in the phenantroimidazole derivative) which translates to different types of interactions between neighbouring units. In fact, the planar conformation in the more π-extended phenantroimidazole carbene allows Au(I) atoms to get sufficiently closer favouring aurophilic interactions. This compound is obtained as two different colour emitting solids which is ascribed to changes in packing modes probably leading to differences in the strength of aurophilic interactions. Interestingly, while the emission in the solid state is almost quenched, the incorporation of the compounds in polymer matrixes enhances the emissive properties of the compounds reaching near unity quantum yields. Efficient detection of arsenate (AsO43-) from contaminated drinking water extracted from underground has become a matter of utmost necessity and an exquisite challenge owing to the growing public health issue due to arsenicosis. In order to combat this we planned to detect arsenate with the naked eye under UV light using a novel chemosensor material whose structure and functioning as a sensor could be certified mechanistically. Hence we were encouraged to synthesize two differently O-substituted imidazole based homologous ligands: C1 (HL¹ = 2-((E)-(3-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)propylimino)methyl)-6-ethoxyphenol) and C2 (HL² = 2-((E)-(3-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)propylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol). To accomplish the purposeful exploration of the luminescent sensor, we considered Chelation Enhanced Fluorescence (CHEF) and kept on searching for a metal cation that would be able to turn on the fluorescence of the ligands. Considering Zn(II) as the most suitable candidate, luminescent complexes D1 and D2 ({[Zn2(L¹)2(I)2](DMF)} and [Zn2(L²)2(I)2](DMF), respectively) were synthesized and characterized by SXRD, UV-Vis, FT-IR, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. In spite of the resemblance in the solid state structures of D1 and D2, the selective response of D1 towards arsenate with high quenching constants (2.13 x 106), unlike D2, has been demonstrated mechanistically with steady state and time resolved fluorescence titration, solution phase ESI-MS spectral analysis and DFT studies. The selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor D1 explicitly make this material a potent candidate for arsenate detection due to its very low detection limit (8.2 ppb), low cost and user friendly characteristics. The doubly deprotonated bridging ligand L12− derived from 2,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,5-dihydro-1′,4′-benzoquinono[2′,3′-d:5′,6′-d′]diimidazole H2L1 forms coordination compounds with two bis(2,2′-bipyridine)osmium(II) complex fragments in anti ([1](ClO4)2) and syn configurations ([2](ClO4)2) of {(μ-L1)[Os(bpy)2]2}(ClO4)2, as evident from crystal structure analyses. Exchange of the metal-coordinating 2-pyridyl functions in the bridge through non-coordinating 4-tolyl substituents (L12− → L22−) leads to [3](ClO4)2 which involves chelation of the [Os(bpy)2]2+ groups through imidazole-N and carbonyl-O atoms of the central p-quinone function. In addition to identification, the compounds were subjected to electrochemical (CV, DPV) and spectroelectrochemical (UV-vis-NIR, EPR) analyses of electron transfer, the results being supported by results from TD-DFT calculations. Essential differences between [1n+]/[2n+] and [3n+] systems were found regarding variable but mostly metal centred oxidation, the two processes separated much more for [3n+]. The first reduction is bpy ([1+], [2+]) or quinone ligand centred ([3+]). A metal–organic framework (MOF) built from a combination of metal cations, neutral azole ligands and sulphate anions, [Cu2(DHBDI)3(SO4)2]n (1, DHBDI = 1H,5H-benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d′]diimidazole), was synthesized. MOF 1 exhibits good chemical stability in acids, bases and boiling water while showing high hydrophilicity. Meanwhile, MOF 1 exhibits a proton conductivity of 1.14 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 90 °C and 98% RH, among the best for MOF materials with uncoordinated N sites. The preference for the formation of mono- versus dinuclear mixed carbene/thiolato complexes of PdII has been studied with three types of N-heterocyclic carbenes derived from benzimidazole, imidazole and 1,2,4-triazole. The complexes were prepared by treatment of halido/NHC precursors with sodium isopropylthiolate in a salt metathesis reaction. Mononuclear complexes are formed when the sulfur and carbon donors are exclusively cis to each other, while their trans arrangement preferably leads to dinuclear complexes with μ2-bridging thiolato ligands. The increased electron density in the latter case cannot be sufficiently compensated by one PdII center alone and leads to the formation dinuclear species with bridging thiolato ligands. The post-thermal treatment (PTT) method was applied for crystal transformation on the structure of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) from 2D to 3D under solvent-free conditions. The investigation was performed based on bridging of the cobalt ions by the 2-methylimidazole linker to form the ZIF structure. Extensive characterization revealed that the reaction mechanism was a transformation in the solid crystal phase and resulted from the de-coordination of the framework and reformation of the crystalline structure. In addition, the PTT method opens the opportunity to simultaneously dope transition metals (Zn, Co, Fe, Ni, and Mn) in the framework during the transformation of ZIFs. The materials with doped metals showed enhanced properties and excellent performance for applications including gas adsorption, dye degradation, and the catalytic activity of CO2 fixation. Bismuth SBA-16 catalyst was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Four kinds of p-toluenesulfonic acid functionalized imidazole ionic liquids were prepared by a two-step method and their molecular structures were characterized by 1H NMR and MS. The post-synthesis impregnation method was used to functionalize the Bi(10)-SBA-16 silicon mesoporous material with the ionic liquids and the obtained materials were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, BET, XPS, and TG. The results show that the volume and pore size of SBA-16 were changed by loading Bi and ionic liquids, while the three-dimensional cubic pore structure of SBA-16 was not destroyed. The composite catalyst was evaluated in Friedel–Crafts acylation of anisole with acetic anhydride. The effects of reaction temperature and the ratio of anisole and acylating agent on the acylation of anisole were investigated by experimental design. The results showed that 1.2ILc@Bi(10)-SBA-16 was used as the catalyst, the conversion of anisole was 85.41% and the yield of aromatic ketone was 69.19% under the conditions of a reaction temperature of 100 °C, a catalyst dosage of 0.5 g, a time period of 4 h and a molar ratio of 1 : 1.5. After 5 recycling runs, the reduction in the overall ratio of reactant conversion and product yield did not exceed 7.5%, indicating that 1.2ILc@Bi(10)-SBA-16 has good stability and reusability. The [FeN6] chromophores found in [Fe(didentate)3]2+ complexes, where didentate is a non-symmetrical 2-(6-membered-heterocyclic ring)-benzimidazole ligand (Lk), exist as mixtures of two geometrical mer (C1-symmetry) and fac (C3-symmetry) isomers. Specific alkyl-substituted six-membered heterocyclic rings connected to the benzimidazole unit (pyridines in ligands L1–L3, pyrazines in L4–L5 and pyrimidines in L6–L7) control the ligand field strength and the electron delocalization so that [FeII(Lk)3]2+ display tunable thermally-induced spin transitions in solution. Thermodynamic, spectroscopic (UV-Vis, NMR) and magnetic studies in solution demonstrate that [Fe(L6)3]2+ (L6 = 1-methyl-2-(pyrimidin-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole) exhibits a close to room temperature spin transition (T1/2 = 273(3) K) combined with a high stability formation constant (in acetonitrile), which makes this complex suitable for the potential modulation of lanthanide-based luminescence in polymetallic helicates. A novel method is proposed for assigning specific thermodynamic spin crossover parameters to fac-[Fe(L6)3]2+ and mer-[Fe(L6)3]2+ isomers in solution. The observed difference relies mainly on the entropic content ΔS merSCO − ΔS facSCO = 11(1) J mol−1 K−1, which favors the spin transition for the meridional isomer. Intermolecular interactions occurring in the crystalline state largely overcome minor thermodynamic trends operating in diluted solutions and a single configurational isomer is usually observed in the solid state. Among the thirteen solved crystal structures 1–13 containing the [M(Lk)3]2+ cations (M = Fe, Ni, Zn, Lk = L6–L7), pure meridional isomers are observed six times, pure facial isomers also six times and a mixture (44% mer and 56% fac) is detected only once. Solid-state magnetic data recorded for the FeII complexes show the operation of slightly cooperative spin transitions in 7 (fac-[Fe(L6)3]2+) and 12 (mer-[Fe(L7)3]2+). A new Cu(I) based boron imidazolate framework, Cu[BH(im)3] (BIF-105, im = imidazole), with a two-dimensional fes-type layer structure was designed and synthesized. The resulting BIF-105 exhibited efficient photocatalytic performance for CO2 reduction with an evolution rate of 933 μmol g−1 h−1 and a selectivity of 83.4% for CO under visible light irradiation, with [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 as the light absorber and triethanolamine as a sacrificial agent. Novel antimony(III) imidazole selone complexes in a super crowded environment are reported for the first time. The super bulky selone antimony complexes, [{IPr*Se}(SbCl3)2] (1) and [{IPr*Se}(SbBr3)2] (2), were isolated from the reactions between IPr*Se (IPr*Se = [1,3-bis(2,6-diphenylmethylphenyl)imidazole selone]) and suitable antimony(III) halides. 1 and 2 are dinuclear complexes with a Sb : Se ratio of 1 : 0.5 with an unusual coordination mode of selone. The molecules 1 and 2 consist of both Menshutkin-type Sb⋯πaryl interactions and a Sb–Se coordination bond. However, the reaction between antimony(III) halides and [(IPaul)Se] ([(IPaul)Se] = [1,3-bis(2,4-methyl-6-diphenyl phenyl)imidazole selone]) with a spatially defined steric impact gave the dinuclear complex [{(IPaul)Se}(SbCl3)]2 (3) and the mononuclear complex [{(IPaul)Se}(SbBr3)] (4) without Menshutkin-type interactions. The Sb : Se ratio in 3 and 4 is 1 : 1. Interestingly, the Menshutkin-type interaction was absent in 3 and 4 due to the efficient coordinating ability of the ligand [(IPaul)Se] with the Sb(III) center compared to that of the super bulky ligand IPr*Se. The thermal property of these antimony selone complexes was also investigated. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on the model systems [L(SbCl3)2] (1A), [L(SbCl3)] (1B), [L′(SbCl3)2] (1C), and [L′(SbCl3)] (1D), where L = [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropyl-4-methyl phenyl)imidazole selone] and L′ = [1,3-bis(phenyl)imidazole selone], to understand the nature of orbitals and bonding situations. The computed metrical parameters of 1A are in good agreement with the experimental values. Natural population analysis of the model system reveals that the natural charge and total population of antimony(III) are comparable. A new metal–organic framework (MOF), [Eu2(HBDPP)2(H2O)2(DMF)2](H2O)2 (H4BDPP = 3,5-bis(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl) pyridine; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) (Eu-MOF), has been successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions. A 1D chain was formed by the adjacent Eu2(COO)24+ dinuclear cluster and HBDPP3−, and further connected by HBDPP3− to form an infinitely extended 3D structure. In order to further improve the proton conductivity of the Eu-MOF, imidazole was encapsulated in its pores to form a composite material named Im@Eu-MOF. AC impedance analysis shows that the highest proton conductivity of the Im@Eu-MOF reaches up to 4.53 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 348 K and 98% RH, which is about 10 times higher than that of the Eu-MOF. In addition, the Eu-MOF can be considered an excellent luminescence-based sensor with a high sensitivity and low detection limit (0.1 μM) for the detection of trace amounts of ascorbic acid. A synthetic pathway for the directed preparation of three novel polyoxovanadate-based copper frameworks (POVCFs), i.e., [Cu0.5(1-ipIM)2]2[V4O11] (POVCF 1), [Cu(1-ipIM)2](VO3)2 (POVCF 2) and [Cu(1-pIM)4](HpIM)4[V10O28] (POVCF 3) (1-ipIM = 1-isopropylimidazole; 1-pIM = 1-propylimidazole) using bifunctional imidazole molecules as organic ligands and base has been developed. Systematic studies revealed that the variable base enviroment in the reaction is the key step in the preparation of 1D to 3D supermolecular networks of POVCFs 1–3. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrated that the Cu2+ atoms of POVCFs 1–2 were coordinated with four imidazole derivative molecules and two different polyoxovanadate {[V4O11]2− and [V10O28]6−} clusters, respectively, exhibiting a [CuN4O2] binding set and a distorted octahedral geometry. Specifically, POVCF 1 exhibited adjacent [V4O11]2− that dangle up and down arranged in a parallel 2D network and further coordinated with [Cu(1-ipIM)4]2+ to form a 3D supramolecular structure. However, POVCF 3 presented one tetrahedral coordinated vanadium atom and one four-coordinated copper atom and they further gave rise to a 1D network by the Cu–O and V–O bonds. More importantly, these POVCFs were further studied in the construction of C–N bond reactions of primary amines under mild conditions, and it was found that POVCF 1 displayed efficient heterogeneous catalytic activities in the Chan–Lam reaction (yields up to 89%). Stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels and metallogels have been widely explored in the past decade, but the fabrication of metallogels with reversible photoresponsive properties remains largely unexplored. In this study, we report the construction of photoresponsive hybrid zinc-based metallohydrogel systems coassembled from an imidazole functionalized phenylalanine derivative gelator (ImF) and carboxylic acid functionalized arylazopyrazole (AzoPz) molecular photoswitches in the presence of Zn2+ ions. Unlike traditional covalent conjugation, noncovalent introduction of small molecular switches into the gel matrix provides a convenient route to generate photoresponsive functional materials with tunable properties and expands the scope of optically controlled molecular self-assemblies. It has been found that the carboxylic acid functionalized AzoPz derivatives alone or mixed with the ImF moiety could not self-assemble to form any gels. However, in the presence of Zn2+ ions they readily formed the coassembled hybrid metallogels in an alkaline aqueous solution with various morphologies. These results suggest that the gelation process was triggered by the Zn2+ ions. In addition, the ImF gelator shows specific response to Zn2+ ions only. The presence of the AzoPz moiety in the gel matrix makes the metallogel coassemblies photoresponsive and the reversible gel-to-sol phase transition was studied by UV-vis spectroscopy. The gels showed a slow reversible light-induced gel-to-sol phase transition under UV (λ = 365 nm) and then sol-to-gel transition by green light (λ = 530) irradiation resulting in the reformation of the original gel state. Narrow band red emitting phosphors play a vital role in high performance smart white LEDs. In this context, a series of new Eu(III) complexes have been synthesized with neutral ligands (C1-functionalised phenanthro-imidazole-based ancillary ligands substituted with phenyl moieties (m-CF3, p-CF3, p-CH3 and 1-naphthyl and 2-naphthyl group)) and dibenzoylmethane (DBM) as an anionic ligand. All the newly synthesized Eu-complexes showed extremely narrow band red emission due to the electric dipole transition (5D0–7F2, both in solid and thin film) with high quantum efficiency. A combined experimental and theoretical study indicates that the energy transfer from the ligand to the metal ion is complete. A temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) study in solution reveals that the red emission is retained (only the ED (5D0–7F2) intensity decreases with increasing temperature). Red LEDs and hybrid white LEDs were fabricated by using a near UV LED chip with europium complexes and a near UV/blue LED conjugated with a yellow organic dye and europium complex mixture, respectively. Hybrid white LEDs (Eu(DBM)3Phen-pCN-pCF3 + yellow organic dye) showed superior CRI (84%) and CIE (x = 0.36, y = 0.39) values (near UV based) and CRI (82%) and CIE (x = 0.34, y = 0.36) values (blue LED based). In addition, the studied Eu-complexes herein showed excellent reversible on–off–on luminescence behavior with exposure to acid–base vapours. An environmentally friendly and economical route for the synthesis of zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) was developed based on the thermal treatment of mixed solid precursors in the absence of solvent and additive compounds. This facile, rapid, and one-step synthetic method involves the heat treatment of a mixture of solid precursors (metal and linker). The solid mixture was transformed into a porous crystalline material without post-treatment and in the absence of any solvent. The synthesized materials are nanocrystals (200–500 nm) with sodalite topology, similar to conventionally prepared ZIFs. The properties of the synthesized materials were evaluated using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, porosity and surface area analysis, gas adsorption, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The metal–oxide precursor, which is typically considered to be inert in the context of chemical synthesis, was readily transformed into a ZIF using this thermochemical method. Chemotherapeutic metal-based compounds are effective anticancer agents; however, their cytotoxic profile and significant side effects limit their wide application. Natural products, especially flavonoids, are a prominent alternative source of anticancer agents that can be used as ligands for the generation of new bioactive complexes with metal ions of known biochemical and pharmacological activities. Herein, we present the synthesis and detailed structural and physicochemical characterizations of three novel complex assemblies of Ga(III) with the flavonoid chrysin and the ancillary aromatic chelators 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyridine and imidazole. The complexes constitute the only crystallographically characterized structures having a metal core from the boron group elements and a flavonoid as the ligand. The in vitro biological evaluation of the three complexes in a series of cancer cell lines of different origin established their cytotoxicity and ROS generating potential. In particular, the Ga(III)–chrysin–imidazole complex displayed the highest anticancer efficacy against all cancer cell lines with IC50 values in the low micromolar range (<1.18 μM), a result worth further investigation. Herein, we report a facile approach to synthesize a new highly versatile heterogeneous catalyst by spontaneous aerial oxidation based on nickel oxide nanocomposites immobilized on surface-functionalized reduced graphene oxide sheets. NiO nanocomposite/reduced graphene oxide (rGO–NiO-NC) is a highly efficient, cost-effective, reusable, selective, and eco-friendly nano-catalyst that does not lose any activity even after five reaction cycles. Nickel loading on the rGO-NiO nanocomposite was found to be 3.3 at%, which contributes to the effective and efficient use of rGO–NiO-NCs as a nano-catalyst for the synthesis of imidazole derivatives. Consequently, a series of imidazole derivatives were synthesized, catalyzed by rGO–NiO-NCs, in 60 min with high yields (86% to 96%) under green conditions. Furthermore, the present synthetic methodology was used for the synthesis of highly aromatic imidazole derivatives (B1–B3) whose calf thymus-DNA binding affinities suggest their superior inhibition ability to displace ethidium bromide (EB), which was further confirmed by molecular docking studies. Additionally, the green chemistry matrix of the synthesis reaction was found to be very close to ideal values, such as carbon efficiency (82.32%), E-factor (0.51), atom economy (77.86%), process mass intensity (1.51), and reaction mass efficiency (66.14%). Three 3D polymeric complexes containing polynuclear Co(II) units, [Co3(bpda)3(bib)2]·H2O (1), [Co5(OH)2(H2O)2(bpda)4(bib)2]·2H2O (2), and [Co2(OH)(bib)(bpt)]·H2O (3) (H2bpda = biphenyl-2,4′-dicarboxylic acid, H3bpt = biphenyl-3,4′,5-tricarboxylic acid, bib = 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene), have been prepared by urothermal synthesis. Complex 1 exhibits an unusual (4,6)-connected 3D network based on binuclear Co(II) clusters and Co2+ centers bridged by bpda2− and bib ligands. Complex 2, containing a novel pentanuclear Co(II) cluster, features a porous 3D MOF with a regular nanosized tunnel. Complex 3 contains an interesting tetranuclear Co(II) cluster and displays an amazing 3D porous MOF built from double-layered 2D [Co2(μ3-OH)(bpt)3]n networks pillared by two rows of bib spacers. In the title complexes, polycarboxylate acids serve to construct and stabilize the polynuclear Co(II) clusters, while bis(imidazole)s help to expand the dimensionality of MOFs. Complexes 2 and 3 show antiferromagnetic properties. Compound 3 with high surface area, high yield, high purity, and high chemical stability was used as a precursor to fabricate Co,N-codoped porous carbon materials by simple carbonization under an Ar atmosphere. Two novel metal–organic frameworks, formulated as [Mn(CIP−)2] (1) and [Ag(CIP−)] (2) (HCIP = 4-(4-carboxylphenyl)-2,6-di(4-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)pyridine), were solvothermally synthesized based on a pyridyl-imidazole-carboxyl multifunctional ligand. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that complex 1 is a 3D microporous framework with uncoordinated imidazole groups, and complex 2 is a 2D + 2D → 2D 3-fold parallel interpenetrated network. Complex 1 exhibited excellent CO2 selective absorption over N2 and CH4. IAST calculations revealed that the selectivities of 1 for the CO2/CH4 (50 : 50) and CO2/N2 (15 : 85) mixtures were 8.0 and 117 at 273 K under 1 bar, respectively. Moreover, the luminescence investigations displayed that complex 2 is an excellent MOF-based multiresponsive fluorescent probe for Fe3+, CrO42−/Cr2O72− and the pesticide 2,6-Dich-4-nitroaniline, with high selectivity and sensitivity. Notably, complex 2 exhibited a highly sensitive sensing ability (5.2 × 104 M−1) and a low detection limit (1.7 × 10−7 M) for 2,6-Dich-4-nitroaniline.
