The lanthanide metal organic framework compounds [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1a–5a) and [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1b–5b) were prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as the primary ligand and 2,2′-bipyridine (1a–5a) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1b–5b) as the secondary ligands. Single-crystal structural studies on [Gd(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (3a) and [Dy(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (5b) indicated that the compounds have a two-dimensional structure. The Y compound exhibits blue emission, and the other compounds exhibit emission in the expected regions (λex = 350 nm). White light emission was achieved by careful mixing of the red (Eu3+) and green (Tb3+) components in the blue emitting Y compound. Thus, Y0.96Tb0.02Eu0.02 (bpy) and Y0.939Tb0.06Eu0.001 (phen) were found to show white emission when excited using a wavelength of 350 nm. The introduction of N–N-containing ancillary ligands (i.e., bpy and phen) increased the overall quantum yield (QY) of white light emission to 31% and 43%, respectively. The high QY observed for the Tb and Eu compounds was found to be sensitive and selective for the fluorometric detection of azinphos-methyl pesticide and trinitrophenol (TNP) in an aqueous medium at the ppb level. The same behaviour was observed when utilising the compounds as onsite paper strip sensors. Their magnetic properties were also studied, revealing for the Tb and Dy derivatives slow relaxation of the magnetisation at low temperature. The present study highlights the usefulness of rigid π-conjugated molecules such as 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline in enhancing the many utilities of rare-earth-containing MOFs towards white light emission, the sensing of harmful and dangerous substances and magnetic properties. In this paper, we report the successful assembly of achiral {Ln6M} ([Ln6M(μ3-OH)8(acac)12(CH3O)x(CH3OH)y], Ln = La, M = Mn, Co, Fe) and chiral {Nd9Fe2} ([Nd9Fe2(μ4-O)(μ3-OH)14(acac)16(NO3)(CH3OH)2(H2O)3]) rare earth clusters using achiral rigid ligands and a transition metal doping strategy. {Ln6M} can be viewed as the fusion of two {Ln3M} tetrahedrons by sharing vertices. {Nd9Fe2} results from the fusion of four {Ln3M} tetrahedrons by vertice and edge sharing. The substitution of Ln with transition metal leads to changes in the coordination pattern around neighboring Ln, which triggers the switch of metal center chirality. This study demonstrates the potentiality of utilizing transition metal doping and rigid ligand to control the chirality of rare earth clusters. By selecting a bisphosphonic ligand H4L (H4L = 4-F-C6H4CH2N(CH2PO3H2)2) and a coligand oxalate (H2C2O4), three isostructural lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with a 2D layer structure, [Ln(H3L)(C2O4)]·2H2O (Ln = Eu (1), Gd (2), or Tb (3)), were hydrothermally prepared. By tuning the molar ratio of Eu3+, Gd3+, and Tb3+ in the above reactions, six bimetallic or trimetallic doped Ln-MOFs (EuxTb1−x (x = 0.02 (4), 0.04 (5), and 0.06 (6)), Gd0.94Eu0.06 (7), Gd0.96Tb0.04 (8) and Gd0.95Tb0.03Eu0.02 (9)) were obtained. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns of doped Ln-MOFs 4–9 show that they are isomorphous with 1–3. The bimetallic doped Ln-MOFs show a gradual variation of luminous colors between yellow-green, yellow, orange, pink, and light blue. Meanwhile, the trimetallic doped Gd0.95Tb0.03Eu0.02 Ln-MOF (9) displays near white-light emission with a quantum yield of 11.39%. Interestingly, the luminous inks of 1–9 are invisible and color tunable, which makes it possible to promote their anti-counterfeiting applications. Additionally, 3 displays good thermal, water, and pH stabilities, which provides the feasibility for its sensing application. The luminescence sensing experiments show that 3 can serve as a highly selective, reusable, and ratiometric luminescent sensor of sulfamethazine (SMZ). Moreover, 3 shows an excellent SMZ detection performance in real samples, such as mariculture water and real urine. Polychromatic emission can be achieved by controlling the distribution of the rare earth activator in multi-cation lattices, which can be used in the fields of white light LED and fluorescence temperature sensing. However, it is still a challenge to control their distribution and location of the target site in a given host material because the distribution of the rare earth activator is uncertain. In this paper, we have chosen Li4SrCa(SiO4)2 as the multi-cation site host and induced the distribution of Eu2+ ions between different cation sites through anion substitution, for the first time, to regulate the luminescence characteristics of a series of Li4SrCaSi2O8-yN2y/3:Eu2+ phosphors. In Li4SrCa(SiO4)2:Eu2+ phosphors, the substitution of O2- by N3- triggered a distinct ordered to disordered structure transition of the SiO4 tetrahedron and induced the remote distribution of the Eu2+ activator, which was verified through the analysis of the XRD, EPR, FT-IR and fluorescence spectra. Due to the location of Eu2+ ions in different cation sites (Eu2+ Sr and Eu2+ Ca), two distinguishable emission peaks with tunable color emissions and different responses to temperature were realized. The white LED that utilized blue-orange-emitting Li4SrCaSi2O4N8/3:Eu2+ and green-emitting BaSi2O2N2:Eu2+ (500 nm) displayed an outstanding color rendering index (Ra) of 85.1. Based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, an optical temperature measurement mechanism was hypothesized and studied in the temperature range of 293-473 K. The highest Sa of the material was 0.086 K-1, and Sr was 1.76% K-1 based on the FIR detection technology, revealing obviously better than most inorganic optical temperature-measuring materials reported before. Development of advanced luminescent nanomaterials and technologies is of great significance for anti-counterfeiting applications in global economy, security, and human health, but has proved to be a great challenge. In this work, we design, synthesize, and characterize mono-disperse, dumbbell-shaped lanthanide-doped NaYF4@NaGdF4 core–shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) with dual-mode fluorescence by coating the NaGdF4:Ln′3+ shell onto NaYF4:Ln3+ core nanospheres via a two-step oleic acid mediated thermal decomposition process. Different from the conventional synthesis method to produce spherical nanoparticles, the epitaxial growth of the NaGdF4:Ln′3+ shell onto the nanosphere cores and the lattice mismatch between β-NaGdF4 and β-NaYF4 nanocrystals enable the formation of dumbbell-shaped CSNPs, as evidenced by the morphological evolution of CSNPs and as explained by the Ostwald ripening growth mechanism. By tailoring different doped lanthanide ions in the core and the shell, the resultant CSNPs exhibit tunable but different up-/down-conversion luminescence under the irradiation of a 980 nm laser and 254 nm UV light, respectively. Finally, these hydrophilic CSNPs are further fabricated into environmentally benign luminescent inks for inkjet printing to create a variety of dual-mode fluorescent patterns (peacock, temple, and a logo of "Hunan University of Technology") on different paper-based substrates (A4 paper, envelope, and postcard). Urgent demand for the prevention and diagnosis of physiological diseases is driving the development of biomarkers and physiological temperature fluorometric sensors. In this paper, a rare trinuclear lanthanide metal–organic framework (MOF), [(CH3)2NH2][Eu3(μ3-OH)(2,6-NDC)3(HCOO)3]·(solv)x (Eu(2,6-NDC), where 2,6-H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) was synthesized using reticular chemistry via reducing the symmetry of the organic ligand from axisymmetric 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,4-H2NDC) to non-axisymmetric 2,6-H2NDC. Eu(2,6-NDC) shows exceptional chemical and thermal stability in acid–base solutions, PBS solution, and boiling water, and even under an air atmosphere up to 300 °C. As-synthesized Eu(2,6-NDC) exhibits ratiometric detection abilities for P1,P5-di(adenosine-5′) pentaphosphate (Ap5A), for use as a biomarker of dry eye disease, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.031 μM, as well as excellent anti-interference properties. As far as is known, it is the first Ap5A sensor based on MOFs. In addition, the results show that the ratiometric parameters of co-doped Eu0.001Gd0.999(2,6-NDC) deliver a good linear luminescence response to physiological temperatures (20–60 °C) with high sensitivity. Cation exchange, a facile and non-destructive post-synthetic modification method, is applied to [(Me)4N]2[Pb6K6(m-BDC)9(OH)2]·H2O (1) (1,3-H2BDC = 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid) to prepare a series of lanthanide functionalized metal–organic frameworks. The fluorescence properties of Ln3+@1 (Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm and Dy) are investigated. The results demonstrate that the framework of 1 is capable of sensitizing both Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions effectively. Remarkably, the rapid and stable fluorescence sensitization of Eu3+@1 can be observed in the presence of fleroxacin in aqueous solution, indicating that the hybrid system can be designed as a highly sensitive and selective probe for fleroxacin. As a novel "turn-on" fluorescent probe, Eu3+@1 is regarded as a promising candidate for applications in clinical diagnosis, due to its merits of high antidisturbance, chemical stability and a low detection limit (43.91 ng mL−1). In the lanthanide series, Eu3+ is most easily reduced to its divalent state. Reduction of Eu3+ has been studied extensively in aqueous media that are insensitive to reducing conditions. Recently, it has been reported that reduction of Eu3+ is also feasible in aqueous nitrate solutions and that Eu2+ remained sufficiently stable in these media to conduct separation experiments. However, additional fundamental research on the reduction efficiency of Eu3+ and stability of Eu2+ in these media has not been reported yet. In this paper, cyclic voltammetry, magnetic susceptibility measurements, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy were used to gain more insights into the reduction of Eu3+ in aqueous nitrate media. Within the parameters used in this work, near-quantitative reduction of Eu3+ could be achieved within 120 min in highly concentrated nitrate salt solutions, using both chemical and electrochemical reduction techniques. Moreover, Eu2+ was remarkably stable in these solutions, showing just a small percentage of back-oxidation after 5 h in a sealed measurement cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we describe the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of 3d–4f complexes of general formula [M4Ln(OH)2(chp)4(SALOH)5(H2O)(MeCN)(Solv)] (Solv = MeOH, MeCN, H2O; chp stands for deprotonated 6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridine (C5H3ClNO), SALOH stands for monodeprotonated 3,5-ditert-butylsalicylic acid (C15H21O3)) obtained by a solvent-free microwave assisted synthesis method. The Ni(II) complexes (Ni4Gd, Solv = MeOH; Ni4Dy, Solv = MeCN) are not SMMs in the absence of an applied dc field. The replacement of Ni(II) by Co(II) (Co4La, Solv = MeOH; Co4Gd, Solv = H2O; Co4Gd-MeCN, Solv = MeCN; Co4Tb, Solv = MeOH; Co4Dy, Solv = H2O) results in improved SMM properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Ce3+ activated SrLn2O4 type phosphors (Ln = Y, Lu, Sc, etc.) only one Ce3+ center was previously reported to show a blue emission band. In this paper, we report the observation of a second Ce3+ center in SrLu2O4:Ce3+. The new center shows a red emission band peaking at 600 nm with an excitation band at 485 nm. We attributed the new center (Ce(ii)) to the substitution of the Lu3+ site and the original blue center (Ce(i)) to the substitution of the Sr2+ site. Spectroscopy studies indicate that Ce(i) centers are preferentially formed at a low doping concentration and the number ratio of Ce(i)/Ce(ii) decreases with increasing Ce3+ concentration until beyond 0.002. The fluorescence lifetimes of the two centers were measured for various doping concentrations. Energy transfer from Ce(i) to Ce(ii) was observed. It was found that the emission intensity of Ce(ii) centers reduces much faster than that of Ce(i) with increasing temperature from 83 K up to 350 K, implying their potential application in temperature sensing based on their temperature dependent intensity ratios. The extraction separation of rare earth elements is one of the most challenging separation processes in hydrometallurgy and advanced nuclear fuel cycles. The TALSPEAK process (trivalent actinide lanthanide separations by phosphorus-reagent extraction from aqueous komplexes) is a prime example of these separation processes. The objective of this paper is to explore the use of ionic liquids (ILs) for the TALSPEAK-like process, to further enhance its extraction efficiencies for lanthanides, and to investigate the potential of using this modified TALSPEAK process for separation of lanthanides among themselves. Eight imidazolium ILs ([Cnmim][NTf2] and [Cnmim][BETI], n= 4,6,8,10) and one pyrrolidinium IL ([C4mPy][NTf2]) were investigated as diluents using di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) as an extractant for the separation of lanthanide ions from aqueous solutions of 50 mM glycolic acid or citric acid and 5 mM diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA). The extraction efficiencies were studied in comparison with diisopropylbenzene (DIPB), an organic solvent used as a diluent for the conventional TALSPEAK extraction system. Excellent extraction efficiencies and selectivities were found for a number of lanthanide ions using HDEHP as an extractant in these ILs. The effects of different alkyl chain lengths in the cations of ILs and of different anions on extraction efficiencies and selectivities of lanthanide ions are also presented in this paper. Upconversion nanocrystals have a lot of advantages over other fluorescent materials. However, their applications are still limited due to their comparatively low upconversion luminescence (UCL). In the present study, a novel nanocomposite of Ag/graphene@SiO2–NaLuF4:Yb,Gd,Er for enhancing UCL was fabricated successfully, and its morphology, crystalline phase, composition, and fluorescent property were investigated. It is interesting to find that the Ag/graphene@SiO2–NaLuF4:Yb,Gd,Er and Ag@SiO2–NaLuF4:Yb,Gd,Er nanocomposites showed high UCL enhancements of 52- and 10-fold compared to the control of Ag-free nanocomposite SiO2–NaLuF4:Yb,Gd,Er, respectively. The enhancement of 52-fold is greater than those reported in our previous studies and some papers. Moreover, the measured life times of the Ag-presented nanocrystals were longer than that of Ag-absent counterparts. These enhancements of UCL can be ascribed to the effect of metal-enhanced fluorescence, which is caused by the enhancement of the local electric field. The UCL intensity of Ag/graphene@SiO2-NaLuF4:Yb,Gd,Er was 5.2-fold higher than that of Ag@SiO2–NaLuF4:Yb,Gd,Er, indicating that graphene presented in the fabricated nanocomposite structure favors metal-enhanced UCL. The small-sized Ag nanoparticles anchored on the graphene sheet mutually enhanced each other's polarizability and surface plasmon resonance, resulting in a big metal-enhanced UCL. This study provides a new strategy for effectively enhancing the UCL of upconversion nanocrystals. Complexation of Am(iii), Nd(iii), and Eu(iii) with a new heterocyclic nitrogen-donor ligand, 2,9-di(quinazolin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (denoted as BQPhen in this paper), was studied by thermodynamic measurements and theoretical computations. The stability constants of two successive complexes in dimethylformamide, ML3+ and ML23+ where M stands for Nd, Eu, or Am while L stands for the BQPhen ligand, were determined by absorption spectrophotometry. The enthalpy of complexation was determined by microcalorimetry. Results show that BQPhen forms ten times stronger complexes with Am(iii) than Eu(iii) or Nd(iii) under identical conditions, suggesting that BQPhen could be used as an efficient extractant for the separations of trivalent actinides from lanthanides. The higher binding strength of BQPhen towards Am(iii) than Nd(iii) or Eu(iii) is mainly due to the more favourable enthalpy of complexation for Am(iii)/BQPhen complexes, implying a higher degree of covalence in the Am(iii)/BQPhen complexes than the lanthanide(iii)/BQPhen complexes. The thermodynamic trend was corroborated with computational results and validated by solvent extraction experiments that demonstrated BQPhen preferably extracted Am(iii) more than Eu(iii), with a separation factor of about 10. Discussions have been made to compare BQPhen with other phenanthroline derivatives such as CyMe4-BTPhen, a bis-triazine-phenanthroline derivative that was reported in the literature. Data suggest that, under identical conditions, BQPhen would form stronger complexes with Am(iii), Eu(iii), and Nd(iii) than CyMe4-BTPhen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a simple and environmentally-friendly approach that allowed for the facile synthesis of a gadolinium-based core/shell/shell nanotube structure with a set of lanthanide ions incorporated into separated layers. In addition, by the rational design of a core/shell structure we systematically investigated the luminescence properties of different lanthanide ions in NaGdF4 host, and efficient down-conversion emission can be realized through gadolinium sublattice-mediated energy migration. The Gd3+ ions play an intermediate role in this process. By changing the doped lanthanide ions, we generated multicolour emissions from the luminescent Ln3+ centers via energy transfer of Ce3+→Gd3+→Ln3+ and Ce3+→Ln3+ (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy and Sm) in separated layers. Due to the strong absorption of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation by Ce3+ ions, the luminescence efficiency could be enhanced after doping Ce3+ ions in the shell. In NaGdF4:5% Eu3+@NaGdF4@NaGdF4:5% Ce3+ core/shell/shell nanotubes, with increasing the NaGdF4 interlayer thickness, a gradual decrease in emission intensity was observed for the Eu3+ activator. 1-Methylimidazole (1-MIM) and 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) are miscible in water and imidazolium based ionic liquids (ILs), and can coordinate with soft metal ions. This paper reports a novel solvent extraction process for trivalent lanthanides and yttrium from aqueous solutions into ILs, which was promoted by a hydrophilic 1-MIM or 2-MIM. Slope analysis confirmed that MIM in ILs formed a 1 : 1 complex with La3+ and Y3+ and a 1 : 4 complex with Eu3+ and Lu3+, depending on the atomic number of the metal and the metal-ligand interactions that have been characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and ESI-MS. The effect of nitrate concentration on the extraction of lanthanides with 1-MIM in ILs was analysed. It indicated that nitrate anions were involved in the extraction process. Under the same conditions, the extraction of lanthanides with MIM into n-pentanol was carried out. The extractability was by far lower than that obtained in ILs. Both cationic exchange and neutral solvation mechanisms occurred in ILs and only the neutral solvation mechanism occurred in n-pentanol, which were demonstrated by the extraction tests and the structure of extracted species determined by ESI-MS. The competitive extraction in ILs showed good selectivity for lanthanides compared to alkali metals and alkaline earth cations. After extraction, lanthanides could be stripped very easily from the ionic liquid phase with dilute nitric acid. From the temperature dependence data, the thermodynamic parameter values (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) were calculated. In this paper, uniform rice-shaped lanthanide doped BiPO4 upconversion submicron particles have been successfully synthesized via a facile room-temperature co-precipitation reaction and subsequent calcination route. The morphology, phase transformation and upconversion luminescent properties of synthesized submicron particles (SMPs) were characterized by using different analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra. The transformation from hexagonal phase to monoclinic phase is crucial for upconversion luminescent properties due to the loss of water molecules in the lattice of hexagonal phase. With different variety and concentration of the dopant Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Er, Tm and Ho) ions, the obtained samples present bright green, blue, and red upconversion emissions under a 980 nm continual wave laser diode excitation. Over the past decade, lanthanide compounds have become of increasing interest in the field of Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) due to the large inherent anisotropy of the metal ions. Heavy lanthanide metal systems, in particular those containing the dysprosium(iii) ion, have been extensively employed to direct the formation of a series of SMMs. Although remarkable progress is being made regarding the synthesis and characterization of lanthanide-based SMMs, the understanding and control of the relaxation dynamics of strongly anisotropic systems represents a formidable challenge, since the dynamic behaviour of lanthanide-based SMMs is significantly more complex than that of transition metal systems. This perspective paper describes illustrative examples of pure dysprosium(iii)-based SMMs, published during the past three years, showing new and fascinating phenomena in terms of magnetic relaxation, aiming at shedding light on the features relevant to modulating relaxation dynamics of polynuclear lanthanide SMMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lanthanide(iii) chelates of DOTA-tetraamide ligands have been an area of particular interest since the discovery that water exchange kinetics are dramatically affected by the switch from acetate to amide side-chain donors. More recently these chelates have attracted interest as potential PARACEST agents for use in MRI. In this paper we report the results of studies using chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) and some more recently reported chelates to re-examine the exchange processes in this class of chelate. We find that the conclusions of Parker and Aime are, for the most part, solid; water exchange is slow and a substantial amount of prototropic exchange occurs in aqueous solution. The extent of prototropic exchange increases as the pH increases above 8, leading to higher relaxivities at high pH. Seven isomorphous 1D chain Ln3+complexes Ln(BTA)(HCOO)(H2O)3(Ln = Pr (1), Gd (2), Eu (3), Tb (4) Dy (5), Er (6) and Yb (7)), and two formate coordinating and bridging 3D Ln3+complexes Ln(HCOO)3(Ln = Pr (8) and Nd (9)) have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Although the Ln3+ions in 1–7have different radius, the trivalent lanthanide ions in 1–7show the same coordinated environment. The well-defined single crystal structures of 8and 9are first samples for formate-bridged Ln3+metallic complexes. The luminescent properties of solid samples of 2–5at room temperature and the magnetic property of 2have been also reported and discussed in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
