The article reports on the introduction of a student-centered campaign of the University of Vermont (UMV) Libraries which aims to promote their Ask a Librarian services. The library science and reference services program will meet the needs of UMV's student user population, through the use of a collaborative design and social networking tools. The UVM Libraries have decided to place an advertising campaign in the student handbook which featured photographs of students and the Web site address of the program.

Libraries play an important role in the education of college students engaged in the online environment of a course management software package. The courseware enables faculty to teach fully online courses or use to enhance their traditional courses with online content. The role of librarians is magnified in the project initiated by the Eastern Kentucky University Libraries. An awarded grant provided an opportunity for librarians to focus more on collaborative relationships with teaching faculty members to better suit the information needs of students. The faculty chose Blackboard as the courseware for further collaboration with individual faculty members, academic departments, and specialized centers such as the Teaching and Learning Center. Integrating library resources into Blackboard courses has resulted in positive benefits for students, faculty and librarians.

The article focuses on the library café at Reeves Library, Moravian College established by library of Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary. The library café central theme is to recreate the image of the library from a solitary, quite place to a more welcoming and appealing center. Michael Kaskowitz, a new marketing professor designed a class project in which students would develop a marketing plan for the library café. Upon completion of the project, the author was able to incorporate many ideas into the library café. The Senior Class Gift Committee funded the library café.

The article focuses on the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), which was created by the Association of Research Libraries in 1998, to serve as a catalyst for action and to reduce barriers to the access and the use of information. SPARC's mission is to correct imbalances in the scholarly publishing system and the belief that these imbalances inhibit the advancement of scholarship and are at odds with fundamental needs of scholars and the academic enterprise. The SPARC has three program areas, which includes educating stakeholder on scholarly communication, advocating policy changes, and incubating market-based initiatives.

This article reports that open access to scholarly information is a hot-button issue that quickly triggers heated discussion, especially if the topic arises in a mixed group of librarians and publishers. Issues surrounding open access are important, and they deserve serious considerations. Serious considerations however, requires the recognition of certain legal and economic realities. In addressing them in this article, it will seem to some readers that the author is belaboring the obvious, but he thinks a careful treatment of these points is necessary, because while many in the library profession recognize them as self-evidently true, there are some who regard them as blasphemous. First, there is no such thing as free information. There is a second basic reality of the information economy that bears on the open-access question, and this one is more controversial than the first: Information is not a public good.

The article focuses on the announcement made by Endeavor Information Systems that it is implementing changes to many of its key product offerings. The first changes are referred to as the Endeavor foundation layer of technology, which consists of Voyager, Meridian, Curator, and Journals Onsite. These products are rich data repositories and each is designed to manage different type of library content. The curator product will introduce in mid-2006 and feature some major architectural changes in terms of support for Extensible Mark-up Language schemas to handle new metadata standards.

The article reports on the online curriculum at the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) and Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science. The article reports that the University of California libraries will collaborate with the Google Books Library Project. Google Books was begun in late 2004 and has as its goal the digitization of books from academic library collections. The libraries collaborating with Google on the project include: University of Michigan, Harvard University, and the New York Public Library. Following a Google Books search, books will be displayed to the end user if the book is in the public domain. Many works in the University of California's historic and special collections will also be included in the Google Books project.

The article presents an invitation for proposals from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) units for the further allocation of Friends of ACRL funds. The Friends of ACRL is an umbrella account consisting of four subfunds to which donors can direct their gifts. The article reports on the appointment of Swets Information Services as the first Global Channel Partner for MPS Technologies' ScholarlyStats. ScholarlyStats is a new service that enables libraries to provide the administration of their usage statistics. As a distributor of this service, SwetsWise usage statistics are included in the ScholarlyStats service, and further integration between the two services are explored. MPS developed ScholarlyStats with the help of more than 50 libraries during the testing period in 2005.

The article reports on the celebration of the 70th anniversary of PALINET, a member-owned and governed regional library network serving the Mid-Atlantic region on January 11, 2006. The organization was established in 1936 as a local union cataloging. Today, PALINET represents more than 600 libraries, information centers, museums and archives. PALINET continues to promote library cooperation and resource sharing. The celebration also marks the culmination of the branding project to update PALINET's appearance.

This article reports that nearly 300 librarians, library staff, and library and information science students from across the U.S. participated in the 2004 National Diversity in Libraries Conference, which was held on May 4-5, 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference featured two dozen presentations and roundtable discussions covering a wide range of subjects. The Southeastern Library Network, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, the Historically Black College and University Library Alliance, and the Association of Research Libraries co-hosted the conference. \

This article reports on the action taken by the Federal Library and Information Network (FEDLINK) concerning preservation of rare library materials. The FEDLINK has mounted an online request for proposal (RFP) for preservation services. This RFP is intended to help the staff members of federal government libraries and information centers identify and select appropriate vendors for preservation services that will be outsourced.
