Elastomers are intriguing materials for many applications, one of these being icephobic coatings. Elastic modulus and work of adhesion are the key parameters coming into play in ice detachment mechanisms, and can be related to hardness and wettability. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely used for anti-ice applications; however, not many works deal with the correlation between cross-linking grade, curing treatments, and icephobicity. This study focuses on PDMS (Sylgard184®) coatings, encompassing four different pre-polymer to cross-linking agent (A:B) ratios ranging from 5:1 to 30:1, and nine curing treatments. The results indicate that increasing the A:B ratio enhances hydrophobicity, softness, and icephobicity, assessed through shear stress measurements. Curing treatments primarily affect hardness and icephobicity, with longer heat treatments resulting in higher hardness and ice adhesion. All samples exhibit promising performances in lowering shear stress values, up to seven times in respect to the uncoated reference for 30:1 ratio. Additionally, a durability assessment is conducted on samples exposed to stress tests in the climatic chamber. A slight deterioration in hydrophobicity across all samples is observed and, notably, a significant hardness increase, around 13%, is experienced for the 5:1 ratio only. The samples also demonstrate an overall robust icephobicity after stress tests, and, for the 30:1 ratio, an average shear stress value four times lower than the reference is maintained. Ice formation affects the performance of many industrial components, including aircraft wings, spacecraft, and power transmission cables. In particular, ice build-up on airplane components increases drag and fuel consumption. A large number of studies have been carried out to reduce ice adhesion by developing passive methods such as icephobic coatings and active ice removal approaches such as mechanical vibrations or chemical-based solutions. Despite remarkable recent breakthroughs in the fabrication of icephobic coatings, passive ice removal solutions require higher durability to resist cyclical mechanical ice detachment treatments. Functionalized TiO2 coatings, applied using the suspension plasma spray (SPS) technique, have been shown to be robust and to have dual-scale characteristics in an ice accretion analysis. In this study, the icephobicity and mechanical durability of a novel duplex coating consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) solid lubricant films on TiO2-coated substrates were evaluated. Notably, various amounts of PTFE were applied on top of the TiO2 coating to identify the ideal quantity required to obtain optimal icephobic properties. Ice was generated in an icing wind tunnel, and the amount of accreted ice was evaluated to assess the anti-icing properties. Wettability parameters, including static water contact angle and contact angle hysteresis, were measured to determine the water mobility and surface energy. Ice shear adhesion to the PTFE-TiO2 duplex coating was measured using a custom-built test rig. The mechanical durability was assessed by measuring the ice shear strength for almost twenty icing–deicing cycles, and after five cycles, the roughness parameters and images taken from the surface of the samples were compared. The combination of PTFE solid lubricant film and TiO2 coating reduced ice adhesion by 70%–90% compared to that of a bare aluminum substrate (reference material). Additionally, the results showed that the application of a uniform layer of PTFE solid lubricant film on dual-scale TiO2 coating significantly reduced ice adhesion and maintained mechanical durability for 25 deicing cycles, making this combination a promising candidate for deicing approaches. It is widely recognized that surface roughness plays an important role in ice adhesion strength, although the correlation between the two is far from understood. In this paper, two approaches, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and machine learning (ML), were utilized to study the nanoscale intrinsic ice adhesion strength on rough surfaces. A systematic algorithm for making random rough surfaces was developed and the surfaces were tested for their ice adhesion strength, with varying interatomic potentials. Using MD simulations, the intrinsic ice adhesion strength was found to be significantly lower on rougher surfaces, which was attributed to the lubricating effect of a thin quasi-liquid layer. An increase in the substrate–ice interatomic potential increased the thickness of the quasi-liquid layer on rough surfaces. Two different ML algorithms, regression and classification, were trained using the results from the MD simulations, with support vector machines (SVM) emerging as the best for classifying. The ML approach showed an encouraging prediction accuracy, and for the first time shed light on using ML for anti-icing surface design. The findings provide a better understanding of the role of nanoscale roughness in intrinsic ice adhesion and suggest that ML can be a powerful tool in finding materials with a low ice adhesion strength. Surfaces with low ice adhesion represent a promising strategy to achieve passive anti-icing performance. However, as a successful and robust low ice adhesion surface must be tested under realistic conditions at low temperatures and for several types of ice, the initial screening of potential low ice adhesion surfaces requires large resources. A theoretical relation between ice adhesion and water wettability in the form of water contact angle exists, but there is disagreement on whether this relation holds for experiments. In this study, we utilised molecular dynamics simulations to examine the fundamental relations between ice adhesion and water contact angle on an ideal graphene surface. The results show a significant correlation according to the theoretic predictions, indicating that the theoretical relation holds for the ice and water when discarding surface material deformations and other experimental factors. The reproduction of the thermodynamic theory at the nanoscale is important due to the gap between experimental observations and theoretical models. The results in this study represent a step forward towards understanding the fundamental mechanisms of water–solid and ice–solid interactions, and the relationship between them. The severe environmental conditions in winter seasons and/or cold climate regions cause many inconveniences in our routine daily-life, related to blocked road infrastructure, interrupted overhead telecommunication, internet and high-voltage power lines or cancelled flights due to excessive ice and snow accumulation. With the tremendous and nature-inspired development of physical, chemical and engineering sciences in the last few decades, novel strategies for passively combating the atmospheric and condensation icing have been put forward. The primary objective of this review is to reveal comprehensively the major physical mechanisms regulating the ice accretion on solid surfaces and summarize the most important scientific breakthroughs in the field of functional icephobic coatings. Following this framework, the present article introduces the most relevant concepts used to understand the incipiency of ice nuclei at solid surfaces and the pathways of water freezing, considers the criteria that a given material has to meet in order to be labelled as icephobic and clarifies the modus operandi of superhydrophobic (extremely water-repellent) coatings for passive icing protection. Finally, the limitations of existing superhydrophobic/icephobic materials, various possibilities for their unconventional practical applicability in cryobiology and some novel hybrid anti-icing systems are discussed in detail. In this paper, hydrophobic nanocomposite coatings based on polyurethane (PUR) modified by nano-silica and silane-based compounds were manufactured by spraying. The main challenge was to assess and improve the hydrophobic as well as anti-icing properties of initially hydrophilic polymer coatings. The prepared nanocomposite coatings were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical profilometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results obtained showed that in order to achieve hydrophobicity, appropriate amounts of nano-silica must be incorporated in the coating, and complete coverage by nano-silica particles is necessary for achieving hydrophobicity. Coating adhesion and the durability of the hydrophobic behaviour were also studied by scratch test and frosting/defrosting cycles, respectively. The results show that use of both nano-silica and silane-based compounds improve the hydrophobic and anti-icing properties of the coating as compared to a non-modified PUR topcoat. A synergistic effect of both additives was observed. It was also found that the anti-icing behaviour does not necessarily correlate with surface roughness and the materials' wetting properties. Coatings with anti-icing performance possess hydrophobicity and low ice adhesion strength, which delay ice formation and make ice removal easier. In this paper, the anti-icing performance of nano/microsilica particle-filled amino-terminated PDMS (A-PDMS)-modified epoxy coatings was investigated. In the process, the influence of the addition of A-PDMS on the hydrophobicity and ice adhesion strength was investigated. Furthermore, the influences of various weight ratios of nanosilica/microsilica (Rn/m) on the hydrophobicity and ice adhesion strength of the coating were investigated. Hydrophobicity was evaluated by contact angle (CA) and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) tests. Ice adhesion strength was measured by a centrifugal adhesion test. The addition of A-PDMS markedly increased hydrophobicity and decreased ice adhesion. The size combination of particles obviously affects hydrophobicity but has little effect on ice adhesion. Finally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to reveal the anti-icing mechanism of the coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In many regions around the world, atmospheric icing during freezing rains and ice storms can cause severe damage to exposed infrastructure. Subsequently, protective coatings capable of ice accumulation prevention or ice adhesion reduction, often referred to as icephobic coatings, have gained a significant amount of interest. In this study, we examine an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet technique for the development of organosilicon-based icephobic coatings on aluminum substrates. Initially, Al-6061 samples are exposed to multiple passes of air plasma treatment at very short jet-to-substrate distances to create a microporous alumina-based surface structure. These surfaces are then used for plasma deposition of superhydrophobic coatings in the same jet with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as the precursor and nitrogen as the plasma gas. Several samples are created with varying plasma precursor flow rates and number of deposition passes. All samples are exposed to three cycles of icing/de-icing to estimate coatings' stability in aggressive natural conditions. The effects of multiple icing/de-icing cycles on surface chemistry, surface morphology, and wetting behavior is studied. It is shown that the most remarkable mechanism through which icing affects surface properties is coating removal during aggressive de-icing procedure. Finally, the icephobic properties of the most efficient coating (referred to as PT5x3) is further studied through 10 cycles of icing/de-icing, and it is shown that this coating can reduce ice adhesion strength by a factor of at least two for up to nine cycles of icing/de-icing. The limited durability of slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) restricts their practical applications. Inspired by the epidermal glands of skins, we developed a facile approach to durable SLIPS with gland-like storage and release functions for icephobicity. By introducing a hybrid surfactant as a lubricant into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, lubricant capsules were formed and mono-dispersed in the matrix, working as gland-like structures to release lubricant. The obtained SLIPS showed durable low ice adhesion strength and thermal durability simultaneously. In detail, the enhanced durability for icephobicity was demonstrated by 20 icing/deicing tests, in which the lubricant remains on the surface; the coatings showed negligible weight loss when stored at 100 °C for 60 h, displaying pronounced thermal durability of the slippery effect. Aircraft icing refers to ice formation and accumulation on the windward surface of aircrafts. It is mainly caused by the striking of unstable supercooled water droplets suspended in clouds onto a solid surface. Aircraft icing poses an increasing threat to the safety of flight due to the damage of aerodynamic shape. This review article provides a comprehensive understanding of the preparation and anti-icing applications of the superhydrophobic coatings applied on the surface of aircrafts. The first section introduces the hazards of aircraft icing and the underlying formation mechanisms of ice on the surface of aircrafts. Although some current anti-icing and de-icing strategies have been confirmed to be effective, they consume higher energy and lead to some fatigue damages to the substrate materials. Considering the icing process, the functional coatings similar to lotus leaf with extreme water repellency and unusual self-cleaning properties have been proposed and are expected to reduce the relied degree on traditional de-icing approaches and even to replace them in near future. The following sections mainly discuss the current research progress on the wetting theories of superhydrophobicity and main methods to prepare superhydrophobic coatings. Furthermore, based on the bouncing capacity of impact droplets, the dynamic water repellency of superhydrophobic coatings is discussed as the third evaluated parameter. It is crucial to anti-icing applications because it describes the ability of droplets to rapidly bounce off before freezing. Subsequently, current studies on the application of anti-icing superhydrophobic coatings including the anti-icing mechanisms and application status are introduced in detail. Finally, some limitations and issues related to the anti-icing applications are proposed to provide a future outlook on investigations of the superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings.
