Background: The manifestation of complex trauma results from exposure to severe and repetitive stressors occurring within the caregiver system. Frequently associated with child maltreatment, complex trauma can lead to impairments in multiple domains, including attachment, affect and behavioural regulation, and cognition. Treatments, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, have been shown to be efficacious, but high attrition rates point to the need for complementary methods that boost client retention and treatment efficacy. This systematic review examines whether dog-assisted therapy has beneficial impacts on the treatment of complex trauma and whether it can decrease treatment attrition among children presenting with complex trauma exposure. Methods: We followed PRISMA guidelines to locate relevant research reports. Seven published research reports matched the inclusion criteria. Results: Dog-assisted therapy may increase the efficacy of standard interventions for complex trauma, although only one study formally assessed treatment retention. Across most studies, there is an overall lack of detailed information on the nature of therapeutic activities involving the dog and how these activities may complement or enhance therapy as usual. Studies were of varying methodological quality, impacting the reliability of findings. Conclusions: Future studies should aim to better describe and justify dog-assisted therapy techniques and evaluate these in comparison with standard evidence-based approaches to the treatment of childhood complex trauma. Introduction: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is present in a latent state in 70–90% of the immunocompetent population, and its reactivation might be triggered by inflammatory conditions such as post-COVID multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) or by immunosuppression induced by steroids. The aim of this paper was to highlight the unexpected complications associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection that require a complex clinical approach for accurate diagnosis. Materials and Methods: We present the case of a 4-year-old male patient who, during an initially favorable course of PIMS, experienced symptoms of respiratory failure. Results: The patient initially presented with clinical and paraclinical signs of PIMS with cardiac involvement, for which high-dose corticosteroid therapy was initiated, followed by gradual tapering, along with immunoglobulins, anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and symptomatic treatment. After 10 days of favorable progress, the patient's general condition deteriorated, showing tachypnea, desaturation, and a ground-glass appearance on thoracic CT. Negative inflammatory markers and favorable cardiac lesion evolution ruled out MIS-C relapse. The presence of anti-CMV IgM antibodies and viral DNA in the blood confirmed acute CMV infection, likely triggered by prior severe-acute-respiratory-syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and secondary immunosuppression due to steroids. Non-specific immunomodulatory treatment was initiated but led to worsening of pulmonary lesions, prompting the initiation of specific antiviral treatment with ganciclovir, resulting in rapid clinical and imaging improvement. Objectives: The EQ-TIPS was developed to measure the Health-Related Quality of Life in infants/toddlers. Considering the rapid development in this period, this study aimed to investigate age-related variations in EQ-TIPS performance. Methods: Data from 551 infants/toddlers living with a health condition were analysed. Infants/toddlers were grouped by age: 0–6 months (n = 100), 6–12 months (n = 95), 12–24 months (n = 147), and 36–48 months (n = 97). Differences in item responses and item correlations across age groups were calculated by Kruskal–Wallis and Spearman's correlations, respectively. Results: The report of problems was significantly higher for movement, play, and communication in the 36–48-month group compared to the 0–6-month group. There were strong correlations (r > 0.50) across all age groups between play and movement and communication and social interaction/play; neither pain nor eating showed a clear pattern of association. Conclusions: There is an age-related difference in the reporting of items linked to developmental milestones (movement, play, and communication) with most problems reported in the 36–48-month group when deviation from peers and continued dependence on caregivers is notable. Consideration should be given to including broader examples of play in the EQ-TIPS. Redefining the items to represent social communication and/or (social) emotion, rather than communication and social interaction, may be warranted. Background: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder that affects multiple systems in the body, often leading to physical disfigurements and a wide range of clinical symptoms. This study aims to investigate the relationship between NF1 severity and visibility and the quality of life (QoL) in children. Methods: The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) and a modified version of the Ablon scale were used to assess QoL and NF1 severity and visibility, respectively. Self-reported and parent-reported QoL scores were compared, and the associations between NF1 severity/visibility and QoL were explored. Results: Thirty-eight pediatric NF1 patients and their parents were enrolled. QoL scores did not differ significantly between patient self-reports and parent reports. However, correlational analyses revealed that higher NF1 severity was associated with lower physical QoL in patients, and greater NF1 visibility was linked to lower physical and social QoL. For parents, higher NF1 severity correlated with lower school functioning, whereas NF1 visibility did not show a significant correlation with QoL. Conclusion: The severity and visibility of NF1 have distinct impacts on various aspects of QoL in children, highlighting the need for tailored interventions that address both physical and psychological challenges. Background: This study investigated the association of psychological well-being (PWB), resilience, depressive symptoms, and social–emotional learning (SEL) with physical activity (PA) in school-aged children. The objective was to understand how these psychosocial factors influence PA levels and identify gender-specific differences in these relationships. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 534 fourth grade and sixth grade students from eight schools in the Midwest region of the United States, with data collected through a Qualtrics survey. Multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the data, with gender-specific analyses conducted to identify differences between boys and girls. Results: The models indicated that all psychosocial factors taken together are significantly associated with PA (F = 26.937, p < 0.001). Of the factors, PWB and resilience were associated with higher PA individually for the total sample (β = 0.383, p = 0.001; β = 0.146, p = 0.005). A gender-specific analysis revealed that all factors collectively were significantly associated with PA in boys and girls (F = 15.846, p < 0.001; F = 6.869, p < 0.001). Individually, PWB and resilience were significantly associated with PA in boys (β = 0.358, p = 0.001; β = 0.171, p = 0.013), while only PWB was significantly associated with PA in girls (β = −0.355, p = 0.001). Conclusions: This study highlights the necessity of promoting resilience and psychological well-being through structured physical activities, aiming to reduce the risk of obesity and improve mental health among children. Background: The experimental evaluation of young children's socio-emotional abilities is limited by the lack of existing specific measures to assess this population and by the relative difficulty for researchers to adapt measures designed for the general population. Methods: This study examined six early social-emotional abilities in 86 typically developing children aged 1 to 3 years using an eye-tracking-based experimental paradigm that combined visual preference tasks adapted from pre-existing infant studies. Objectives: The aim of this study is to obtain developmental norms in six early social-emotional abilities in typical children aged 1 to 3 years that would be promising for an understanding of disorders of mental development. These developmental standards are essential to enable comparative assessments with children with atypical development, such as children with Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities (PIMD). Results: The participants had greater spontaneous visual preferences for biological (vs. non-biological) motion, socially salient (vs. non-social) stimuli, the eye (vs. mouth) area of emotional expressions, angry (vs. happy) faces, and objects of joint attention (vs. non-looked-at ones). Interestingly, although the prosocial (vs. antisocial) scene of the socio-moral task was preferred, both the helper and hinderer characters were equally gazed at. Finally, correlational analyses revealed that performance was neither related to participants' age nor to each other (dismissing the hypothesis of a common underpinning process). Conclusion: Our revised experimental paradigm is possible in infants aged 1 to 3 years and thus provides additional scientific proof on the direct assessment of these six socio-emotional abilities in this population. Childhood is a critical period for immune system development, which is greatly influenced by the gut microbiome. Likewise, a number of factors affect the gut microbiome composition and diversity, including breastfeeding, formula feeding, and solid foods introduction. In this regard, several studies have previously demonstrated that breastfeeding promotes a favorable microbiome. In contrast, formula feeding and the early incorporation of certain solid foods may adversely affect microbiome development. Additionally, there is increasing evidence that disruptions in the early microbiome can lead to allergic conditions and food intolerances. Thus, developing strategies to promote optimal infant nutrition requires an understanding of the relationship between infant nutrition and long-term health. The present review aims to examine the relationship between infant feeding practices and the microbiome, as well as its implications on allergies and food intolerances in infants. Moreover, this study synthesizes existing evidence on how different eating habits influence the microbiome. It highlights their implications for the prevention of allergies and food intolerances. In conclusion, introducing allergenic solid foods before six months, alongside breastfeeding, may significantly reduce allergies and food intolerances risks, being also associated with variations in gut microbiome and related complications. Background: Studies have shown a bidirectional relationship between asthma and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, there is a paucity of national-level data evaluating the impact of OSA on hospital outcomes in pediatric hospitalizations for asthma. Methods: We analyzed the National Inpatient Sample and Kids Inpatient Database to include all pediatric hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of asthma between 2003–2016. Using ICD codes, the pediatric asthma cohort was divided into two groups: those with and those without a concomitant diagnosis of OSA. The primary outcomes were in-hospital mortality and the need for mechanical ventilation. The secondary outcomes were the lengths of each hospital stay and total hospitalization charges. Results: We analyzed 1,606,248 hospitalizations during the 14-year study period. The overall prevalence rate of OSA was 0.7%. Patients with asthma and OSA were significantly older (8.2 versus 5.9 years) and were more often male, p < 0.001. The OSA group had several increased comorbidities. The overall mortality rate was 0.03%, and multivariate regression analysis showed that OSA was associated with 4.3 times higher odds of in-hospital mortality (95% CI: 2.4 to 7.6, p < 0.001). Furthermore, OSA was associated with a 5.2 times greater need for mechanical ventilation (95% CI: 4.8 to 5.5, p < 0.001). Linear regression analyses demonstrated that OSA independently contributed an additional 0.82 days to the hospital stay length (95% CI: 0.79 to 0.86, p < 0.001) and an extra 10,479 USD (95% CI: 10,110 to 10,848, p < 0.001) in hospitalization charges. Conclusion: OSA in children admitted with asthma is associated with poor hospital outcomes such as increased mortality risk, the need for mechanical ventilation, and increased healthcare utilization. Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the diagnostic value of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum levels of the soluble form of triggering receptor-1 expressed on myeloid cells (sTREM-1) in neonatal meningitis. Methods: Serum sTREM-1 levels were measured in all neonatal sepsis patients at the start of antibiotic therapy and the 48th hour of treatment. At the beginning of antibiotic therapy, CSF samples were collected for sTREM-1 measurements. Control CSF samples were also collected from the patients with meningitis at the 48th hour of treatment. Results: A total of 77 preterm (50) and term (27) patients with neonatal sepsis were included in the study. There was no significant difference between the CSF sTREM-1 levels of patients with and without meningitis. The CSF sTREM-1 levels of preterm infants with meningitis decreased significantly after treatment (p = 0.038). Although the CSF/serum sTREM-1 ratios tended to increase in babies with meningitis, no significant difference was found between the groups. CSF/serum sTREM-1 ratios (mean ± SD) were 1.42 ± 0.91 and 1.14 ± 0.85 in preterm babies with and without meningitis and 1.15 ± 0.97 and 0.97 ± 0.55 in term babies with and without meningitis, respectively. Background/Objectives: With the rising ubiquity of digital media and screens in everyday life, toddlers are increasingly exposed to different screens from an early age (i.e., television, computer, tablet, phone). However, few studies have examined the effect of these screens on toddlers' perceptual development. Since tactile exploration skills are necessary for environmental discovery and overall development, the current research investigates the links between screen-use habits and the tactile exploration skills (with visual control) of 6- to 36-month-old toddlers. Methods: The study involved observing the interactions of 135 toddlers with various objects and assessing the complexity of their visuo-tactile exploration strategies through two original experimental tasks. Data concerning screen habits and other relevant factors, such as socio-economic level, were collected using a parental questionnaire. Results: Toddlers with greater screen exposure time demonstrated weaker tactile exploration skills and employed less age-appropriate exploration strategies. Socio-economic factors and parental engagement in alternative activities significantly influenced these developmental outcomes. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the importance of reducing screen time and promoting interactive co-viewing and alternative activities to mitigate the negative effects of screen exposure. Intorduction: Most studies on the progression of childhood-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) involve relatively short follow-up periods, focusing primarily on neurological outcomes and disability progression. The influence of these and other factors on the health-related quality of life is not known. To gain a comprehensive understanding of early-onset MS, it is crucial to evaluate the effects of treatment and the disease on quality of life. Method: This pilot project aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using an online survey tool for long-term follow-up data collection from patients with childhood-onset MS. An anonymized, monocentric, prospective survey was conducted on a convenience cohort of patients treated at a certified centre for neuromuscular diseases in childhood between 2007 and 2019. Results: A total of 27 patients completed the survey. There were no mandatory items, therefore some patients chose not to answer all the questions in the questionnaire. Patients exhibited promising educational achievements, low neurological disease burden, and high resilience. However, anxiety, depression, and pain significantly impacted their perceived health status. Conclusion:This single-centre study has yielded new insights into childhood-onset MS. To enable more accurate comparisons across different centres and countries, it is essential to establish a minimum data set and questionnaire subset for patients with paediatric-onset MS transitioning into adulthood. Background and Objectives: Retrieve data from the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to examine information on the epidemiological prevalence, treatment strategies, and survival outcomes of pediatric vertebral, sacral and pelvic osteosarcomas. Methods: We reviewed NCDB data from 2008 to 2018, concentrating on vertebral, sacral, and pelvic osteosarcomas in children 0 to 21 years. Our analysis involved logistic and Poisson regression, Kaplan-Meier survival estimates, and Cox proportional hazards models. Results: The study population included 207 patients. For vertebral osteosarcomas, 62.5% of patients were female, and 78.1% were white. Regional lymph node involvement predicted 80 times higher mortality hazard (p = 0.021). Distant metastasis predicted 25 times higher mortality hazard (p = 0.027). For sacral and pelvic osteosarcomas, 58.3% of patients were male, and 72% were white. Patients with residual tumor were 4 times more likely to have prolonged LOS (p = 0.031). No residual tumor (HR = 0.53, p = 0.03) and radiotherapy receipt (HR = 0.46, p = 0.034) were associated with lower mortality hazards. Distant metastasis predicted 3 times higher mortality hazard (p < 0.001). Hispanic ethnicity was linked to lower resection odds (OR = 0.342, p = 0.043), possibly due to language barriers affecting patient understanding and care decisions. Conclusions: In conclusion, our examination of NCDB offers a thorough exploration of demographics, treatment patterns, and results, highlighting the importance of personalized approaches to enhance patient outcomes. Insecure and disorganized attachment patterns in children are linked to poor health outcomes over the lifespan. Attachment patterns may be predicted by variables that influence the quality of children's interactions with their primary caregivers/parents (usually mothers) such as prenatal and postnatal exposures and the children's own behaviours in interactions. The purposes of this exploratory study were to examine: (1) prenatal predictors of children's attachment patterns, and (2) postnatal mediators and moderators of associations between prenatal predictors and children's attachment patterns, with adjustment for relevant covariates. Mother–child dyads (n = 214) from the longitudinal Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition (APrON) cohort were studied using valid and reliable measures. Hayes' mediation analysis was employed to determine direct and indirect effects. Mothers' prenatal cortisol levels directly predicted disorganized (versus organized) child attachment in unadjusted models. Children's passivity (in adjusted models) and compulsivity (in unadjusted and adjusted models) in parent-child interactions mediated the pathway between mothers' prenatal cortisol levels and children's disorganized attachment patterns. Serial mediation analyses revealed that mothers' cortisol levels predicted their children's cortisol levels, which predicted children's compulsivity, and, ultimately, disorganized attachment in both unadjusted and adjusted models. No predictors were correlated with children's insecure (versus secure) attachment. This exploratory research suggests that prenatal exposure to mothers' cortisol levels and children's behavioural contributions to parent–child interaction quality should be considered in the genesis of children's attachment patterns, especially disorganization. Background: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), poverty rate, and the prevalence of overweight/obesity or obesity in children and adolescents aged 2–14. Methods: Parents or guardians reported the weight and height of participants, used to calculate body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-scores according to the International Obesity Task Force standards. Participants were categorized into "overweight/obesity" and "no overweight/obesity" and further into "obesity" and "no obesity". The rate of poverty rate was determined using data from the National Statistics Institute of Spain, defining it as the percentage of people with income below 60% of the national median. SES was based on the head of household's occupation and categorized into low, medium, and high levels. Results: Adjusted multilevel models showed participants with medium or high SES had lower odds of overweight/obesity compared to those with low SES (medium SES: odds ratio [OR]: 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.54–0.73; high SES: OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.49–0.70). Participants in the high-poverty group had higher odds of having overweight/obesity (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.13–1.74) compared to the low-poverty group. Conclusions: The study highlights significant socioeconomic disparities in childhood overweight/obesity, emphasizing the potential impact of SES and poverty on health outcomes in Spanish children and adolescents. Objective: The present study assessed the iron and Vitamin A status of children aged 0 to 36 months in Thulamela municipality, Vhembe District. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 250 children aged 0 to 36 months attending well-baby clinic services with their mothers. Convenience sampling was used to select study participants, and simple random sampling was used to choose clinics. Data were gathered via a questionnaire administered by the researcher and field workers from August to September 2019. Standard techniques were used to measure body weight and height. In addition, serum retinol, haemoglobin, iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation, and transferrin levels were also assessed. Information on dietary diversity was gathered through a 24 h dietary recall. Results: The prevalence of underweight, wasting, and stunting was 3.6%, 2%, and 9.2%, respectively. Using serum retinol <10 µg/dL, 22% of children had vitamin A deficiency. The prevalence of anaemia was 53.6%, while 13.1% of children had iron deficiency anaemia when using serum ferritin of less than 12 μg/dL. Most children (90.8%) had an inadequate dietary diversity score, while 9.2% had sufficient dietary diversity. The most consumed food groups were grains, roots and tubers, vitamin A rich fruits and vegetable, and flesh foods. A higher percentage (44%) of children with low iron ferritin were underweight compared to those with normal iron ferritin (df = 1, p-value = 0.007). Conclusion: Iron, anaemia, and vitamin A deficiencies, accompanied by a high prevalence of stunting, were common among children in Thulamela Municipality. Acute kidney injury (AKI) presents significant challenges in pediatric care, often remaining underrecognized. This paper provides an overview of pediatric AKI, highlighting its epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, predisposing conditions, and treatment. AKI in children stems from diverse causes, including renal tubular damage, vasoconstriction, and inflammation. Diagnosis relies on traditional markers such as serum creatinine and urine output, alongside emerging biomarkers such as Cystatin C, NGAL, KIM-1, IL-18, TIMP-2 and IGFBP7, urinary calprotectin, URBP4, L-FABP, and clusterin. Various pediatric conditions predispose to AKI, including type 1 diabetes, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, appendicitis, gastroenteritis, COVID-19, multisystem inflammatory syndrome, sickle cell disease, and malignancies. Treatment entails supportive care with fluid management and, in severe cases, renal replacement therapy. Timely recognition and management are essential to mitigating adverse outcomes. Polymyositis is a rarely reported complication of COVID-19 illness, especially in children. Molecular mimicry may be a cause of hyperactivated autoimmunity, leading to various clinical manifestations, including myopathies. Symptoms vary from mild muscle weakness to severe rhabdomyolysis. We review the literature on post-COVID myositis and report a case of severe polymyositis in a 7-year-old boy, following undefined viral infection 3 weeks before the onset of muscle pain. Patient's condition deteriorated from physical activity-associated pain in the lower limbs to severe muscle weakness leading to dysphagia and mechanical ventilation. As antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were detected and other possible conditions causing myositis were excluded, the diagnosis of post-COVID polymyositis was considered as the most likely. The patient was treated with high doses of methylprednisolone and cyclophosphamide, resulting in improvement. Although COVID-19 is becoming a seasonal disease, the infection itself and post-viral disorders, such as polymyositis, are still of great interest and require better investigation to ensure appropriate management for each individual. Our experience suggests that aggressive immunosuppressive therapy might be a solution for severe post-COVID-related diseases. Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a custom neck collar with negative sensory feedback for the treatment of torticollis that was previously unresponsive to conservative or surgical treatment. Methods: Twenty-four children diagnosed with unresponsive or intractable torticollis were enrolled in this two-stage, single-arm study. The ipsilateral aspect of the orthosis is adjustable in height and designed to provide support between the clavicle and the mandibular angle on the tilted side. In stage 1 (the adjustment period), the orthosis with a smooth surface was applied for 2 h per day for 3 months. In stage 2, a rough surface with a hook-and-loop fastener (Velcro©) was attached to the collar, and it was worn for a further 2 h a day for 3 months. Twenty children (mean age 63.95 ± 13.44 months) were included in the analysis. Results: The mean torticollis angle was 17.60 ± 5.65° (mean ± SD) at baseline; 14.15 ± 3.62° directly after stage 1; and 6.00 ± 3.67° directly after stage 2 (X2 = 36.685, df = 19, p = 0.000). Conclusions: This study demonstrated the feasibility, therapeutic effect, and safety of a novel tactile feedback orthosis for the treatment of children with torticollis. Objectives: This study was aimed at analyzing the efficacy on the improvement of the visual function of a dichoptic online cloud-based platform for the treatment of amblyopia in anisometropic children. Methods: A quasi-experimental (pretest–post-test) study was conducted in 23 subjects with ages from 5 to 15 years old with anisometropic amblyopia combined with additional presence (2 subjects) or not (21 subjects) of microtropia. A total of 30 home-based training sessions of 30 min per session with Bynocs® platform were prescribed for 6 weeks. Results: Amblyopic eye logMAR visual acuity (VA) significantly improved from 0.28 ± 0.24 to 0.13 ± 0.20 after the 6-week treatment (p < 0.001). At baseline, 60.9% of participants had VA in amblyopic eye of 0.20 logMAR or worse, whereas this percentage decreased to 21.7% after treatment. Binocular function (BF) significantly improved from 2.82 ± 1.11 to 2.32 ± 0.94 (p < 0.001). Mean compliance was 92%, 87% and 93% at 2, 4 and 6 weeks of treatment, respectively. Conclusions: In conclusion, home-based dichoptic training with the digital platform evaluated is an effective method to improve amblyopic VA and stereoacuity in children with anisometropic amblyopia combined or not with microtropia. In many countries, patient organisations offer advice and the exchange of experiences to Hirschsprung's disease patients and their families. Professional treatment by experienced health care providers and the availability of life-long multidisciplinary follow-up care are essential. However, outside the clinic, patients and their families have to manage life on a day-to-day basis at home, which often brings up uncertainties and questions: Parents go through different stages during the diagnosis and treatment of their child, the affected children themselves go through many different stages of development, and even through the course of adulthood, new questions regarding the chronic disease may arise. Patient organisations can support the patients and their families at all stages of life by listening, offering information in an understandable way, connecting people, and sharing others' experiences. This enables families and patients to develop a better understanding of the rare disease and promotes their management strategies and confidence. The holistic approach of patient organisations aims to complement the medical treatment. Background/objectives: This study examined the association between maternal anger, children's externalizing symptoms, and the moderating impact of maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV). The primary objective was to investigate whether maternal ACEs alter the link between maternal anger and children's externalizing symptoms, guided by theoretical frameworks such as the stress sensitization and stress steeling models. Methods: A sample of 159 Portuguese mothers exposed to IPV participated in the study, completing a protocol of self-report measures. Measured variables included maternal anger, ACEs, children's externalizing symptoms, and IPV. Results: Results indicate a significant moderation effect of ACEs on the association between maternal anger and externalizing symptoms at low levels of ACEs. Conversely, at moderate and high ACEs levels, no statistically significant association exists between maternal anger and children's externalizing symptoms. Conclusions: Clinical implications emphasize the importance of tailored parenting interventions to prevent externalizing symptoms in children, integrating diverse emotion regulation strategies while considering the impact of maternal ACEs. Historically, pediatric liver transplantation has achieved significant milestones, yet recent innovations have predominantly occurred in adult liver transplantation due to higher caseloads and ethical barriers in pediatric studies. Emerging methods subsumed under the term artificial intelligence offer the potential to revolutionize data analysis in pediatric liver transplantation by handling complex datasets without the need for interventional studies, making them particularly suitable for pediatric research. This review provides an overview of artificial intelligence applications in pediatric liver transplantation. Despite some promising early results, artificial intelligence is still in its infancy in the field of pediatric liver transplantation, and its clinical implementation faces several challenges. These include the need for high-quality, large-scale data and ensuring the interpretability and transparency of machine and deep learning models. Ethical considerations, such as data privacy and the potential for bias, must also be addressed. Future directions for artificial intelligence in pediatric liver transplantation include improving donor-recipient matching, managing long-term complications, and integrating diverse data sources to enhance predictive accuracy. Moreover, multicenter collaborations and prospective studies are essential for validating artificial intelligence models and ensuring their generalizability. If successfully integrated, artificial intelligence could lead to substantial improvements in patient outcomes, bringing pediatric liver transplantation again to the forefront of innovation in the transplantation community. Background: Abdominal tumors rarely occur in childhood but are associated with great psychological stress for patients and their families. Parents playing a central role in their children's treatment may experience adverse effects on their Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and mental health due to the children's illness and required treatment. Given the limited knowledge of the psychosocial burden of parents with children suffering from solid abdominal tumors, this study aims to assess their HRQoL and mental health along with the impact of various psychosocial factors. Methods: A cross-sectional cohort study was carried out involving 54 parents of children with solid abdominal tumors who had surgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany. The results were compared with 46 parents of children undergoing routine surgeries without a prior tumor diagnosis, and with normative values. Data were obtained using standardized questionnaires. Results: Parents of the index group showed significantly worse HRQoL and limited mental health. Furthermore, they showed significantly higher parental burden in several subscales and less social support in comparison with the control group. Conclusions: Considering the lower parental HRQoL and the central role parents play in their children's lives, it is crucial to include prevention and intervention measures for parents as part of a multimodal treatment regime for children with solid pediatric abdominal tumors. Background: Heated humidified high-flow nasal cannulas (HHHFNCs) are increasingly used as an alternative strategy for weaning from nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) in premature infants. However, the optimal pressure provided by HHHFNCs is unknown. This retrospective study investigated the pressure changes and associated factors during HHHFNC therapy in preterm infants. Methods: Clinically stable preterm neonates born with a birth weight of 2500 g or less and receiving HHHFNC therapy for weaning from NCPAP were enrolled. The flow of the HHHNFCs was adjusted to achieve an initial pressure equivalent to the positive expiratory pressure (PEEP) of NCPAP. Subsequent pressure changes in the HHHFNCs were measured by a GiO digital pressure gauge. Results: Nine premature infants were enrolled. Their gestational age (mean ± SD) was 28.33 ± 2.61 weeks, and the birth weight was 1102.00 ± 327.53 g. Overall, 437 pressure measurements were conducted. The median pressure of the HHHFNCs was 5 cmH2O. The generated pressure had a significant association with the body weight, postmenstrual age (PMA) and flow rate. A multiple regression model revealed that the measured pressure (cmH2O) = −5.769 + 1.021 × flow rate (L/min) − 0.797 × body weight (kg) + 0.035 × PMA (days) (r2 = 0.37, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The pressure provided by HHHFNCs is influenced by body weight, PMA, and flow rate. It is feasible to set the delivered pressure of HHHFNCs to match the applied PEEP of NCPAP initially, facilitating the weaning of preterm infants from NCPAP to HHHFNCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The reported outcomes of pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) have varied across studies. There are few outcome data concerning DCM in Chinese children. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study to describe clinical features and determine risk factors for poor outcomes in children with DCM. Methods: We enrolled 121 children with DCM in our hospital from 2003 to 2021. General information and laboratory and echocardiographic data were collected and analyzed. Cox regression analysis was performed to determine risk factors for poor outcomes. Results: This study included 121 patients (69 males and 52 females). The median age at diagnosis was 10.8 years, and the follow-up time was 10.0 months. Eighty-two patients (67.8%) exhibited cardiac function classes III–IV at the time of diagnosis. Tachypnea was the most common symptom (78.5%). In echocardiography, the mean left ventricular end-diastolic dimension z score was 7.36 ± 2.73, and the left ventricular ejection fraction z score was −6.58 ± 2.17. The 1-, 2-, and 5-year survival rates were 51.2%, 43.8%, and 32.2%, respectively. Cox analysis revealed that cardiac function classes III–IV (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.801, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 1.030–3.149, p = 0.039) and calcium levels (HR = 0.219, 95% CI = 0.084–0.576, p = 0.002) were predictors of poor outcomes in children with DCM. Congenital or acquired hand differences, including unilateral below-elbow deficiencies, present complex challenges in pediatric rehabilitation. Surgical management and prosthetic provision represent a big challenge to find a good balance for guaranteeing optimal hand function. There is no specific assessment tool for measuring these aspects in the Italian context. The present study investigates the psychometric properties of the ABILHAND-Kids in children with congenital unilateral below-elbow deficiencies and acquired amputation of the upper limb. We measure internal consistency using Cronbach coefficient alpha and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for measuring test-retest reliability. Differences in hand function in both children with acquired or congenital diseases were also investigated. Participants to the study were 107 (49 F and 58 M) children, with a mean (SD) age of 8.88 (4.25). For test retest reliability, conducted on a sub-sample of 58 children, the ICC was 0.92, while for internal consistency, the Cronbach coefficient alpha was 0.90. We did not find statistically significant differences in scoring (p = 0.33) in the use (mean 29.25 SD 6.58) or non-use of a prosthetic device (mean 30.74 SD 7.43), while statistically significant differences were found in hand function (p < 0.01) for children who had a congenital impairment (mean 31.87 SD 6.49) and children who had an acquired amputation (mean 27.77 SD 6.60). In conclusion, the ABILHAND-Kids showed good internal consistency and reliability and can capture differences in hand function in children with both congenital and acquired hand disorders. Retentive strength data are critical to predicting the long-term clinical performance of zirconia crowns for primary teeth. Objectives: This research assessed the clinical outcome of prefabricated zirconia crowns (PZCs) cemented with either self-adhesive resin cement or pure glass ionomer cement in the primary teeth of children. Method: In the present research, a sample of 162 prefabricated zirconia crowns were collected through convenience sampling. A follow-up examination was conducted at 12 and 24 months to assess the clinical outcomes of PZCs post cementation. Results: Zirconia crowns cemented with self-adhesive resin showed high clinical outcomes at both 12 and 24 months, with 95.1% of crowns retained. In contrast, crowns cemented with glass ionomer cement had slightly lower clinical outcomes, with 91.4% retained at 12 months and 84.0% retained at 24 months, indicating a significant difference (p-value). Long-term follow-up is crucial for the optimal maintenance of crown stability. Conclusions: Self-adhesive resin cement is a viable option for cementing PZCs in pediatric dentistry, demonstrating satisfactory clinical performance over both 12 and 24 months. Background: The aim of the present study was to develop a clinical–ultrasound model for early detection of hospital admission, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission, and oxygen requirement in children diagnosed with acute bronchiolitis (AB). Furthermore, the prognostic ability of models including sonographic data from antero-lateral, lateral-posterior, and posterior areas (eight zones) vs. antero-lateral and lateral-posterior areas (six zones) vs. only antero-lateral areas (four zones) was analyzed. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on infants under 12 months with AB. A lung ultrasound (LUS) was performed within 24 h of hospital care and analyzed using the Lung Ultrasound Combined Score (LUCS) based on the ultrasound patterns and their extent. Regression models combining LUCS (using eight, six, or four lung areas) with age and clinical scale were created. Results: A total of 90 patients were included (62 admitted to the ward, 15 to PICU), with a median age of 3.7 months. Clinical–ultrasound models with eight and six lung zones predicted hospital admission (AUC 0.89), need for oxygen therapy (AUC 0.88), and its duration (40% explanatory capacity). Models using four lung areas had lower prognostic yield. No model predicted PICU admission needs or duration. Scabies is a parasitic infestation of the skin with high prevalence in crowded spaces. In some instances, scabies becomes the underlying factor for complicated skin-borne opportunistic pathogens infections in both children and adults. Geographic area and socio-economic factors are determinants of the endemic pattern of this disease. Currently, the treatment of scabies has been under special attention. A combination of oral therapy with Ivermectin and sulfur-based ointments are the gold standard. However, caution is required in patients with kidney impairment. The renal involvement in children with scabies is mainly caused by acute glomerulonephritis. The severity of the nephritic syndrome can lead to other complications. Also, Ivermectin possesses a nephrotoxic effect. Severe hypertension can lead to neurological complications. The aim of our case report is to present two unusual complications in brothers with scabies. We report the cases of two brothers with scabies who presented with severe skin infection that developed acute post infectious glomerulonephritis (APIGN). In addition, one of the brothers presented with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). The other one developed acute tubule-interstitial acute kidney injury following Ivermectin administration. This literature review presents a comprehensive and systematic account of research on the experiences of children with extended reality (XR), including VR, AR, and other types of immersive technologies that enhance and augment children's activities. The search on Scopus and Web of Science produced 531 outputs. Content analysis with inter-rater reliability (Krippendorff's α) and Leximancer, a software for text mining, were used for analyzing the material. Four research strands were identified: (1) interventions, treatments, and medical procedures in clinical contexts; (2) teaching and learning enhanced by XR; (3) children's adoption and user experiences; (4) design and prototyping of XR hardware and software for children. The results showed the following findings: (a) studies on children's clinical interventions and treatments using HMD-supported immersive virtual reality comprise the most substantial strand of studies; (b) research in this area, and in teaching and learning studies, has grown dramatically since 2017, while the other areas have been stagnant over the years; (c) AR research is still limited and is mainly applied in educational contexts for design and prototyping; (d) few studies have considered children's perspectives on XR safety issues; (e) research on the use of XR for enhancing social and emotional skills development is underrepresented. Future research should focus on the potential of XR technologies for interventions to enhance children's psychosocial wellbeing and health more broadly. Background: Congenital pneumonia is a common respiratory disease in newborns, often influenced by obstetric factors. Clinical diagnosis can be delayed, prompting interest in using systemic inflammatory indicators to predict various diseases. Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the predictive value of maternal systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery for congenital pneumonia in newborns. Methods: This retrospective study included full-term, singleton infants born at the Affiliated Huaian No. 1 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between January 2017 and December 2022. Infants admitted to the neonatal department within 48 h of birth were divided into two groups: 46 with clinical congenital pneumonia (the observation group) and 65 without congenital pneumonia (the control group). Maternal peripheral blood, complete blood cell count, and general condition within 72 h before delivery, as well as neonatal admission data were recorded. Systemic inflammatory indicators were assessed. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the predictive value of the maternal systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery for congenital pneumonia. A prediction model for neonatal pneumonia was constructed by combining systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery with logistic regression. The association between this prediction model and the prognosis of neonatal congenital pneumonia was examined. Results: Maternal systemic inflammatory indicators before delivery as predictive markers for congenital pneumonia and the regression model jointly constructed by NLR, MLR, SII, SIRI, and PIV before delivery predicted the occurrence of congenital pneumonia better. Maternal systemic inflammatory indicators correlated with the severity of congenital pneumonia in neonates. Background: One of the main drawbacks of tunneled central venous catheters (CVCs) is catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Antibiotic lock therapy (ALT) can be combined with systemic antibiotics to achieve catheter salvage. Our objectives are to describe cases of CRBSI and our experience with ALT in a pediatric oncology–hematology ward. Methods: a retrospective descriptive study of pediatric CRBSI cases in a Spanish oncology–hematology unit from 2007 to 2017 was conducted. We collected demographic, clinical, and microbiological data from all patients. Results: fifty-eight CRBSIs were diagnosed in thirty-nine patients; 72.9% of these patients were male, with a median age of 42.1 months. The main underlying diseases were leukemia/lymphoma (51.7%) and solid tumors (32.7%). Thirty-five (60.3%) CRBSIs were caused by Gram-positive cocci, of which 70.6% were coagulase-negative Staphylococci, and sixteen (27.6%) were caused by Gram-negative bacilli. We treated 41/58 (71%) cases with ALT. A total of 12/17 (71%) CVCs that were not treated with adjunctive ALT were removed, compared with 13/41 (32%) that were treated with ALT (relative risk (RR), 0.449; confidence interval (CI), 95%: 0.259–0.778, p = 0.004). Major reasons to remove the CVC in the CRBSI-ALT group were local insertion/pocket site infection (23%), persistent symptoms (23%), and infectious' relapses (15%). Background/Objectives: Evidence indicates that persistent transgressive behaviors often begin early in development and increase around age twelve, and warns that children who exhibit transgressive behaviors in childhood or early adolescence tend to develop criminal behaviors in adulthood which makes childhood a critical unit of analysis for timely intervention. The study examines risk and protective factors in childhood related to illegal behavior, through the perspective of developmental criminology. The observation of risk and protective factors in early stages allows us to design interventions that prevent social adjustment problems in children from becoming more complex by maintaining the transgression of social norms over time. Factors identified by developmental criminology can be organized according to ecological systems theory and discussed in relation to previous criminological studies. Methods: Using a systematic review based on the PRISMA method, the study identifies 24 updated developmental criminology articles that study early protective factors between birth and age twelve. Result: Risk factors at the individual level include biological, socioemotional, behavioral, symptomatic aspects and adverse life experiences. Individual protective factors include cognitive, socioemotional, and personality development aspects. Risk factors at an interpersonal and contextual level are related to family, school, peers, socioeconomic situation and governance. Conclusions: This review highlights the importance of recognizing risk and protective factors in child development, contemplating interventions at multiple levels where an articulation between the various institutions involved in child care is possible. Background: The presenting symptoms of patients with Hirschsprung's disease (HD) are a failure to pass meconium, abdominal distension, and bilious vomiting. The gold standard diagnosis is a rectal biopsy to confirm aganglionosis. The aim of our study was to describe the diagnostic pathway of Hirschsprung's disease at our institution and document the indication for a rectal biopsy. Methods: We have performed a prospective collection of all patients who underwent a rectal biopsy to exclude HD from December 2022 until September 2023 including. The following data were collected: patient's age, presenting symptoms, type of biopsy, failure rate, complications, and histopathological results. Results: We identified 33 patients who underwent 34 rectal biopsies at 0.6 years of age. A total of 17 patients had a rectal suction biopsy (RSB), and 17 patients underwent a partial thickness under general anaesthesia (GA). 1/17 (6%) patients had an inconclusive RSB and subsequently underwent a biopsy under GA. Constipation and chronic abdominal distension plus vomiting were the most common presenting symptoms throughout all ages. Five patients (15%) had a rectal biopsy that was positive for HD. Conclusion: A protocolised approach to the assessment of infants and children with suspected HD ensures the appropriate utilisation of invasive procedures such as biopsy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This research can facilitate the development of early detection tools for ASD by identifying specific patterns of deficits in executive functioning, validating the use of the BRIEF-P as a detection tool, and complementing information obtained from other evaluation instruments (Autism Diagnostic Interview—ADI—and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule—ADOS). Aims: To gain knowledge of the application and usefulness of the BRIEF-P in the evaluation of executive functions (EFs) in people with ASD in the early years of the life cycle. Method: In order to systematically examine this hypothesis, a meta-analysis was conducted to identify the executive profile (strengths and weaknesses) of children with ASD. Out of a total of 161,773 potentially eligible published articles from different databases, 13 appropriate articles were revised and 4 articles were selected. Studies that were included evaluated samples involving individuals with ASD aged 2 to 8 years and were published in English or Spanish during the period of 2012–2022. Results: The executive profile obtained from the application of the BRIEF-P in individuals with ASD was analyzed. It was identified that children with ASD, compared to typically developing children, show significantly clinical scores on the flexibility, inhibition, and global executive functioning scales. The results support the hypothesis of an executive deficit, with flexibility and inhibition being diagnostic markers for early and prompt identification of autism. Conclusions and Discussion: The results confirm deficits in flexibility, although they are not conclusive. This may be due to aspects related to methodology, whereby the studies (i) include very large and heterogeneous age groups, (ii) do not discriminate based on the level of competence, and (iii) use instruments for evaluating executive functions that are not validated or adapted for people with ASD. Another reason is the lack of consensus in the very operational definition of the executive functions construct, with the studies focusing mainly on the cold dimension while ignoring the hot dimension. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has become a promising treatment option in pediatric surgery, offering a novel approach to tissue repair and regeneration. Obtained from the patient's own blood or umbilical cord blood (CB), PRP is a concentrated form of plasma enriched with platelets, growth factors, and cytokines essential for stimulating tissue healing. This systematic review explores the applications of PRP therapy in pediatric surgical procedures, focusing on its role in promoting wound healing, reducing postoperative complications, and enhancing patient outcomes. A systematic literature overview was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, encompassing studies published between 2004 and 2024. The research has identified different fields of application for PRP therapy in pediatric surgery, including treatment of pilonidal sinus and hypospadias repair. Key findings from clinical studies and randomized controlled trials are summarized, highlighting the efficacy of PRP therapy in accelerating wound healing, reducing pain, and improving patient recovery. Despite promising results, challenges and controversies surrounding PRP therapy persist, including variability in preparation protocols and optimal dosing regimens. The safety of PRP therapy in pediatric patients is also discussed, emphasizing its autologous nature and minimal risk of adverse reactions. In summary, this review highlights the role of PRP therapy as a safe and effective therapeutic approach in pediatric surgery, while further research to standardize protocols and elucidate optimal treatment strategies are still necessary. (1) Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the studies that evaluate the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (VR) as a distraction technique for pain and anxiety associated with medical procedures in children and adolescents. (2) The methods involved a systematic review of randomized controlled trials retrieved from databases in health sciences (Pubmed, CINHAL, Scopus, WOS, ProQuest, Cuiden Plus, InDICEs-CSIC). PRISMA guidelines were followed. (3) Results: Twelve trials were included. Four involved venipuncture, four involved surgical procedures, one involved vaccination, one involved burn care, one involved secondary wound closure, and the last one involved subcutaneous port access. (4) Discussion: Children who undergo medical procedures often experience pain and anxiety, which affects their physical condition and their relationships with caregivers and health professionals. Immersive VR is an effective alternative to medications to help in these cases. No author found statistically significant differences against the use of VR for distraction and palliation of pain and anxiety, which seems to be more effective at a younger age. It is important to personalize the immersive VR experience and equipment. Fetal and neonatal thyrotoxicosis occurs in up to 5% of pregnancies in mothers with Graves' disease (GD). This condition is caused by stimulating antibodies against the thyrotropin receptor (TRAbs) that cross the placenta and may stimulate the fetal thyroid, typically in the second half of pregnancy. GD is often treated with radioiodine, resulting in hypothyroidism in most patients, but TRAbs can persist for several years. Even if a pregnant mother is hypothyroid after radioiodine therapy or surgery, her TRAbs can still, although rarely, induce fetal hyperthyroidism. In this review, we first present two cases of neonatal hyperthyroidism in mothers with GD who became hypothyroid after prior radioiodine therapy, identified through a 10-year analysis of the National Perinatal System in Slovenia. Based on these cases, we provide an overview of existing data on this rare clinical condition in neonates. We also discuss the underlying mechanisms and clinical outcomes based on currently available data. In conclusion, our review highlights the importance of careful monitoring during pregnancy in all women with GD, even in those well managed after radioiodine therapy or surgery. (1) Background: Data on persisting symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents are conflicting. Due to the absence of a clear pathophysiological correlate and a definitive diagnostic test, the diagnosis of Long COVID currently rests on consensus definitions only. This review aims to summarise the evidence regarding Long COVID in children and adolescents, incorporating the latest studies on this topic. (2) Methods: We designed a comprehensive search strategy to capture all relevant publications using Medline via the PubMed interface, with the initial literature search conducted in April 2023. To be included, publications had to present original data and include >50 participants with Long COVID symptoms aged between 0 and18 years. (3) Results: A total of 51 studies met the inclusion criteria, with most studies originating from Europe (n = 34; 66.7%), followed by the Americas (n = 8; 15.7%) and Asia (n = 7; 13.7%). Various study designs were employed, including retrospective, cross-sectional, prospective, or ambispective approaches. Study sizes varied significantly, with 18/51 studies having fewer than 500 participants. Many studies had methodological limitations: 23/51 (45.1%) studies did not include a control group without prior COVID-19 infection. Additionally, a considerable number of papers (33/51; 64.7%) did not include a clear definition of Long COVID. Other limitations included the lack of PCR- or serology-based confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the study group. Across different studies, there was high variability in the reported prevalence of Long COVID symptoms, ranging from 0.3% to 66.5%, with the majority of studies included in this review reporting prevalences of approximately 10–30%. Notably, the two studies with the highest prevalences also reported very high prevalences of Long COVID symptoms in the control group. There was a relatively consistent trend for Long COVID prevalence to decline substantially over time. The prevalence of Long COVID appeared to differ across different paediatric age groups, with teenagers being more commonly affected than younger children. Furthermore, data suggest that children and adolescents are less commonly affected by Long COVID compared to adults. In children and adolescents, Long COVID is associated with a very broad range of symptoms and signs affecting almost every organ system, with the respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuropsychiatric systems being most commonly affected. (4) Conclusions: The heterogeneity and limitations of published studies on Long COVID in children and adolescents complicate the interpretation of the existing data. Background/Objectives: Premature birth can lead to socio-emotional, behavioural and executive problems that impact quality of life and school performance in the long term. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a 12-week computerised training called Vis-à-vis to enhance these competencies in a cohort of very preterm (VPT) children aged 6 to 9. Methods: This pilot randomised controlled trial included 45 children born before 32 gestational weeks. Socio-emotional, behavioural and executive competencies were evaluated at three time points using computerised tasks, neuropsychological tests and questionnaires. Results: Among the eligible VPT children, 20% (n = 45) accepted to be part of the study, and 40% (n = 18) dropped out. Finally, 60% (n = 27) of the enrolled participants completed the study. Results showed a significant improvement in emotion knowledge and recognition immediately after the completion of the training. Conclusions: Overall, our results indicate that the implementation of this type of computerised training is feasible, but the overall compliance is unsatisfactory given the high dropout rate. Nevertheless, the positive effect of the training on emotion recognition encourages further exploration of these kinds of interventions to prevent adverse consequences in children born too soon. This study aims to review the scientific evidence regarding the effects of table tennis practice on children and adolescents. Studies were searched in three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and SportDiscus) from their inception up to May 2024. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the 10-point Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS). A total of twelve studies were examined, with interventions involving children with intellectual disabilities, ADHD, DCD, ASD, and typically developing children. A variety of training programs were assessed over durations ranging from 6 weeks to 1 year in the studies included. Table tennis was shown to positively impact various domains, including executive function, motor skills, visual perception, graphomotor function, gross motor skills, coordination capacity, behavioral inhibition, and social behavior. Nonetheless, it is imperative to expand the number of studies on children and adolescents with diverse conditions to more comprehensively evaluate the benefits of table tennis for each specific condition. Purpose: This study aims to assess the incidence of hip displacement and dislocation (denominated as hip migration) among ambulant and non-ambulant Danish children with cerebral palsy (CP) by estimating their cumulative incidence of migrated hips. A secondary objective is to compare the prevalence across different Danish regions. Methods: Data were obtained from the Danish Cerebral Palsy Follow-Up Program (CPOP) from the years 2008 to 2021. This population-based cohort study included 1388 children with CP (58% male; 42% female) as subjects; aged 0–15 years; with an average age of 5.4 years at their last follow-up. The children were categorized according to their Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level into ambulators (GMFCS I–III) and non-ambulators (GMFCS IV–V). The Kaplan–Meier estimator was employed to calculate the cumulative incidence of migrated hips from birth until the date of their last radiographic follow-up. Differences between ambulatory and non-ambulatory children and regional differences were assessed with the Log-rank test. Results: Median radiological follow-up for ambulators was 51 months and 94 months for non-ambulators. The cumulative incidence of hip dislocation was 0.3% (95% CI: 0–0.8%) and 22.0% (95% CI: 9.2–34.8%) for ambulators and non-ambulators, respectively (p < 0.0001), whereas the incidence of hip displacement was 21.1% (95% CI: 16.3–25.9%) and 76.7% (95% CI: 68.6–84.7%) for ambulators and non-ambulators, respectively (p < 0.0001). There were no significant regional differences in the incidence of hip dislocation among ambulators, but there were significant differences for non-ambulators. Moreover, significant regional differences were detected in hip displacement for both ambulators and non-ambulators. Conclusions: The prevalence of hip migration in Danish children with CP is significantly higher among non-ambulators, who are at an increased risk of hip migration compared to their ambulant counterparts. However, the low frequency of radiographic follow-up for ambulators might cause the incidence of hip migration to be underestimated. We report on a 4-year-old boy affected by Gaucher disease (GD) type 3, who presented with splenomegaly and a history of oculomotor apraxia. GD is a rare lysosomal storage disorder caused by glucocerebrosidase deficiency with multi-organ involvement. Besides common clinical features such as hepatosplenomegaly and skeletal involvement, less frequent neurological symptoms, such as oculomotor apraxia, are indicative of neuronopathic forms of the disease, namely GD type 3, to be confirmed both by enzyme activity and genetic testing. Overall, GD management requires a multidisciplinary approach involving metabolic pediatricians, neurologists, psychologists, and geneticists, and currently relies on early enzyme replacement therapy. Although enzyme replacement therapy has proved to be effective in improving systemic signs and symptoms, it is unable to alleviate neurological complications once these have occurred, as it does not pass across the blood–brain barrier. Neurological improvements may occur through indirect mechanisms. Thus, our case report aims to highlight the importance of considering GD in the differential diagnosis of pediatric patients presenting with splenomegaly associated with neurological manifestations, as early intervention may significantly modify the disease progression and prevent further irreversible complications. Background: Football, as the most popular sport worldwide, has long been under suspicion of causing varus knee alignment as early as adolescence. However, no causal relationship has yet been found. The first step to do so would be to determine the prevalence of lower leg malalignment among male junior football players depending on age, performance level and the number of active seasons played. Methods: Leg axis alignment in frontal plane was determined in male junior football players of different age levels between 7 and 18 years by measuring the intercondylar/intermalleolar distance (ICD/IMD) in an upright position. In addition to anthropometric data, multiple sport-specific data such as the start of their football career or training time per week were collected by means of questionnaires (clinical trial registration number: DRKS00020446). Results: 207 male junior football players were included in this survey. The mean age was 12.8 years. Within the group of 15 to 18 year olds, the prevalence of varus knee malalignment was highest at just under a third (32.1%). In the subpopulation that played actively for more than ten seasons, 28.9% showed varus leg axis. Regarding performance level, the highest IMD/ICD values and highest prevalence of varus alignment were found among football players who play on a semi-professional level (16.7%), compared to amateur (11.4%) and high-performance levels (2.8%). Conclusions: Further research is necessary to investigate if this high prevalence of varus knee in children of a higher age and higher playing levels is due to the selection bias of football players with varus knee or a real development of varus knee in individuals. Topical corticosteroids are a mainstay in the treatment of many pediatric disorders. While they have proven beneficial therapeutic effects and are generally considered safe, systemic adverse events may occur. This study presents four cases of children who experienced systemic adverse events after using inhaled and intranasal topical corticosteroids, as well as topical corticosteroids in other forms. A comprehensive literature review was performed to explore the existing evidence on this topic. The aim of this study is to raise awareness among healthcare providers about the possibility of systemic adverse events associated with the use of locally administered corticosteroids in pediatric patients. This information underscores the importance of careful monitoring, individualized treatment plans, and further research to better understand and mitigate the risks associated with corticosteroids, even those not given systemically. Childhood critical illness can have long-term effects on families, but the extent and trajectory of recovery for parents are unknown. Using prospective longitudinal design, we describe the health outcomes of parents and their trajectory six months after paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) discharge. Parents reported health outcomes at PICU discharge (baseline), and 1-, 3-, and 6-months post-discharge. We used the Pediatric Quality-of-Life Family Impact Module, Patient Health Questionnaire-4, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Checklist for DSM-5. The group-based trajectory model was used to identify recovery patterns. We included 128 parents of children aged 1 month to 18 years, admitted to the PICU for ≥48 h. Three post-discharge composite health trajectory groups were classified: 54 mild (42%), 68 moderate (53%), and 6 severe (4%). Parents in the mild and moderate groups returned to baseline health within the first 3 months, but those in the severe group exhibited worse outcomes at 6-months. The mean (SD) PICU stay durations for mild, moderate, and severe groups were 9 (16), 7 (10), and 38 (61) days; days of mechanical ventilation were 4 (5), 4 (7), and 18 (25) days; and readmission rates were 12 (22%), 23 (34%), and 4 (66%), respectively. (1) Background: This study explores the potential energy expenditure associated with participation in after-school sports activities among primary school children. (2) Methods: The study involved 129 children age (11.35 ± 0.55 years) recruited from eight different public after-school sport programs. (3) Results: Data analyses revealed significant differences between the eight sports in total calories per session, calories per minute, and METs (p < 0.05). All sports showed higher energy expenditure compared to chess (p < 0.05), with soccer and rugby exhibiting the highest energy expenditure per session. Team sports showed elevated energy consumption per session (p < 0.01, r > 0.30), calories per minute (p = 0.01, r > 0.40), and METs (p < 0.01, r > 0.40) in comparison with individual sports. (4) Conclusions: These findings enhance our understanding of the energy expenditure observed in primary school children following various after-school sports activities. Background: Some epidemiological studies suggest that early exposure to animal allergens during infancy reduces the risk of bronchial asthma in school-age children. However, the observed associations in some cases may be an effect of the study used (epidemiological observational studies, especially a cross-sectional study) and indicate reverse causality. Aim: This study aimed to determine the association between exposure to animal allergens and the prevalence of respiratory diseases, including bronchial asthma, considering the potential impact of reverse causality on the observed relationships. Material and methods: An analysis of data from a cross-sectional epidemiological study conducted in 2020 involving 3237 primary school students aged 7–15 years in the Silesian Province (Southern Poland) was carried out. The parents of students completed a questionnaire based on The International Study on Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). The relationship between the occurrence of chronic cough, wheezing, and dyspnea in the last 12 months, night waking due to dyspnea, and asthma in the presence of pets was assessed. Exposure to animal allergens was determined by answering the question, "Are there any furry or feathered animals in the home?" with three response options: "yes; they have been in the past; no" (Scenario 1). For the analyses and to reveal a potential reverse causality effect, the last two response categories regarding pet ownership were combined to form a "no" category in Scenario 2, and the first two answers were combined into a "yes" category in Scenario 3. A chi-square test was used to assess the relationship between variables, and a statistical significance level of p < 0.05 was adopted. Results: Chronic cough affected 9.5% of children, wheezing in the last 12 months—9.2%, night waking due to dyspnea—5.8%, dyspnea in the last 12 months—4.8%, bronchial asthma—9.2%. Analysis considering the category of having or not having pets (yes vs. no) showed that bronchial asthma was statistically significantly more common in children who did not have pets at home (10.9% vs. 7.9%, p = 0.002). A similar situation was observed for wheezing in the past 12 months (10.7% vs. 8.1%; p = 0.01) and nocturnal awakening due to dyspnea (6.8% vs. 5.1%, p = 0.03). No statistically significant differences were observed for the other symptoms. Analysis by time of pet ownership (a. present; b. present but in the past; c. not present) highlighted similar relationships. Asthma (a. 7.7% vs. b. 13.4% vs. c. 7.7%; p = 0.004), wheezing in the past 12 months (a. 8.1% vs. b. 8.9% vs. c. 10.9%, p = 0.03) and night waking (a. 5.0% vs. b. 4.5% vs. c. 7.1%; p = 0.04) were more common in children without pets and those who had owned pets in the past. The highest proportion of children with asthma was in homes where pets were present in the past. Conclusions: Analyses indicating a relationship between a higher prevalence of asthma and some respiratory symptoms, and the absence of pets cannot be considered as a casual association. The analysis conducted did not reveal a reverse causality effect. The results of observational epidemiological studies, especially a cross-sectional study, should always be interpreted with caution, considering possible distortions and conclusions drawn. Background: Neonatal cerebral stroke includes a range of focal and multifocal ischemic and hemorrhagic brain lesions, occurring in about one of 3000 live births. More than 50% of children with neonatal stroke develop adverse outcomes, mainly unilateral cerebral palsy. Asymmetries in segmental movements at three months have been proven to be an early sign of CP in infants with unilateral brain damage. Recognition of additional early signs could enhance prognostic assessment and enable an early and targeted intervention. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess early signs of CP in infants with arterial cerebral stroke through the General Movements Assessment and the Motor Optimality Score—Revised (MOS-R). Method: Twenty-four infants born at term (12 females and 12 males) diagnosed with ACS, and 24 healthy infants (16 females and 8 males) were assessed. The GMs (fidgety movements) and MOS-R were assessed from videos recorded at 11–14 weeks of post-term age. Cognitive and motor outcomes were assessed at 24 months using the Griffiths III developmental quotient and Amiel-Tison neurological examination. The gross motor function classification system expanded and revised (GMFCS-E&R) was adopted to categorize CP. Results: Among infants with ACS, 21 (87.5%) developed unilateral CP. Most of them showed non-disabling CP (14 had GMFCS-E&R grade 1 [66.6%], 6 grade 2 [28.6%], and 1 grade 5 [4.8%]). Fidgety movements (FMs) were absent in 17 (70.8%), sporadic in 4 (16.7%) infants, and normal in 3 (12.5%). Segmental movement asymmetry was found in 22/24 (91.7%). According to the MOS-R, motor items (kicking, mouth movements), postural patterns (midline centered head, finger posture variability), and movement character (monotonous and stiff) were statistically different among infants with ACS and healthy infants. The MOS-R median global score was lower in the group with ACS compared to the control group (6 vs 26; p < 0.01). FMs, segmental movement asymmetry, and MOS-R global score were significantly correlated with abnormal outcome. MOS-R global scores less than or equal to 13 had 100% specificity and sensitivity in predicting GMFCS-E&R grade ≥ 2 CP in infants with ACS. Conclusions: The rate of CP was high among infants with ACS, but in most cases it showed low GMFCS-E&R grades. The study highlighted a significant correlation between MOS-R, together with absent FMs and unilateral CP in infants with ACS. Moreover, the MOS-R showed high sensitivity and specificity in the prediction of CP. Combined assessment of FMs and MOS-R could help to better identify infants at high risk of developing UCP in a population of infants with ACS. Objectives: This study addresses a critical need in pediatric pharmacotherapy by focusing on the development of an enteric formulation of omeprazole for pediatric use. Omeprazole, a widely used proton pump inhibitor, is essential for treating various gastrointestinal disorders in children. The main objective is to design a compounding formula that can be prepared in hospital pharmacy services without the need for industrial equipment, which is often unavailable in these settings. Methods: The research applied different galenic strategies to overcome the challenges of omeprazole's instability in acidic environments and its complex pharmacokinetic and physicochemical properties. The experiments were conducted sequentially, employing salting out, ionic gelation, and matrix granulation strategies. Based on the results obtained, the control conditions and parameters for the various trials were established. Results: Among the techniques used, wet granulation proved to be the most promising, achieving a gastro-resistance level of 44%. In contrast, the ionic gelation and salting-out techniques did not yield satisfactory results. Conclusions: The findings of this study underscore the need to adopt alternative formulation strategies to ensure the stability of omeprazole. This goal requires a multidisciplinary approach and continuous effort to design omeprazole formulations that meet quality standards and appropriate gastro-resistance requirements.
