Soil dissolved organic matter (SDOM) is an important part of the DOM pool in terrestrial systems, influencing the transport and fate of many pollutants. In this study, SDOMs from different regions across China were compared by a series of spectroscopic methods, including UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the hydrophobicity was quantified by partition coefficients of SDOM in the aqueous two-phase system (K ATPS). The molecular weight, aromaticity, and hydrophobicity of SDOM from different regions exhibited strong heterogeneity, K ATPS combined with UV–vis and fluorescence indices can be readily used for differentiating heterogeneous SDOM, and SDOMs were compositionally and structurally different from DOMs in aquatic systems based on spectral characterization. Importantly, the two-phase system (TPS) model has only been validated by DOMs in freshwater systems, and good organic carbon‒water partition coefficient (K OC) predictive power (RMSE = 0.11) could be provided by the TPS model when applied to heterogeneous SDOM without calibration, showing its broad applicability. Our results demonstrate the applicability of the TPS model for predicting the sorption behavior of terrestrial DOM, broadening the application scope of the TPS model and indicating its potential as a routine model for the risk assessment of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in organic contaminated sites. Soil potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution of contaminated sites has become a global environmental issue. However, given that previous studies mostly focused on pollution assessment in surface soils, the current status and environmental risks of potentially toxic elements in deeper soils remain unclear. The present study aims to cognize distribution characteristics and spatial autocorrelation, pollution levels, and risk assessment in a stereoscopic environment for soil PTEs through 3D visualization techniques. Pollution levels were assessed in an integrated manner by combining the geoaccumulation index (I geo), the integrated influence index of soil quality (IICQs), and potential ecological hazard index. Results showed that soil environment at the site was seriously threatened by PTEs, and Cu and Cd were ubiquitous and the predominant pollutants in the study area. The stratigraphic models and pollution plume simulation revealed that pollutants show a decreasing trend with the deepening of the soil layer. The ranking of contamination soil volume is as follows: Cu > Cd > Zn > As > Pb > Cr > Ni. According to the IICQs evaluation, this region was subject to multiple PTE contamination, with more than 60% of the area becoming seriously and highly polluted. In addition, the ecological hazard model revealed the existence of substantial ecological hazards in the soils of the site. The integrated potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated that 45.7%, 10.13%, and 4.15% of the stereoscopic areas were in considerable, high, and very high risks, respectively. The findings could be used as a theoretical reference for applying multiple methods to integrate evaluation through 3D visualization analysis in the assessment and remediation of PTE-contaminated soils. Bioplastics are considered sustainable alternatives to conventional microplastics which are recognized as a threat to terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about the potential ecotoxicological effects of bioplastics on soil fauna and ecosystems. The present study assessed the toxicity of microplastics [Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene (PE)] and bioplastics [Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Sodium polyacrylate (NaPa) on a key soil fauna Oppia nitens , a soil oribatid mite, and investigated the ecological relevance of O. nitens avoidance response as a valuable tool for the risk assessment of contaminated soils such as the Superfund sites. Findings showed that the mites' net response indicated avoidance behavior such that in most cases as concentrations of micro- and bioplastics increased, so did the avoidance responses. The avoidance EC 50 endpoints showed PS < PE < PVA < NaPa, indicating higher deleterious effects of microplastics. High toxicity of PS in soils to O. nitens at EC 50 of 165 (±25) mg/kg compared to bioplastics and other known contaminants poses an enormous threat to soil. For bioplastics in this study, there were no significant avoidances at concentrations up to 16,200 mg/kg compared to PS and PE which showed avoidance responses at 300 and 9000 mg/kg respectively, implying that bioplastics might be relatively safer to soil mites compared to conventional microplastics. Also, results indicated that long-term heavy metal pollution such as in contaminated Superfund sites decreased microbial biomass; a useful bioindicator of soil pollution. Furthermore, O. nitens avoidance of heavy metals contaminated sites demonstrated the ecological relevance of avoidance response test when assessing the habitat integrity of contaminated soil. The present study further supports the inclusion of the oribatid mite, O. nitens in the ecological risk assessment of contaminants in soil. Acinetobacter sp. AL-6 combining with biochar was adapted in activated sludge (AS & co-system) to decontaminate Mn2+, Fe2+ and NH 4 +-N, and treat activated sludge (AS) for its activity and settling performance improvement. Specifically, the co-system promoted the growth of bacteria in the activated sludge, thus increasing its ability to nitrify and adsorb Mn2+ and Fe2+, resulting in the removal of high concentrations of NH 4 +-N, Mn2+, Fe2+ and COD in the reactor by 100%, 100%, 100%, and 96.8%, respectively. And the pH of wastewater was increased from 4 to 8.5 by co-system also facilitated the precipitation of Mn2+ and Fe2+. The MLVSS/MLSS ratio increased from 0.64 to 0.95 and SVI 30 decreased from 92.54 to 1.54 after the addition of co-system, which indicated that biochar helped to improve the activity and settling performance of activated sludge and prevented it from being damaged by the compound Mn2+ and Fe2+. In addition, biochar promoted the increase of the tyrosine-like protein substance and humic acid-like organic matter in the sludge EPS, thus enhanced the ability of sludge to adsorb Mn2+ and Fe2+. Concretely, compared with AS group, the proteins content and polysaccharides content of the AS & co-system group were increased by 13.14 times and 6.30 times respectively. Further, microbial diversity analysis showed that more resistant bacteria and dominant bacteria Acinetobacter sp. AL-6 in sludge enhanced the nitrification and adsorption of manganese and iron under the promotion of biochar. Pre-eminently, the more effective AS & co-system were applied to the removal of actual electrolytic manganese slag leachate taken from the contaminated site, and the removal of NH 4 +-N, Mn2+, Fe2+ and COD remained high at 100%, 100%, 71.82% and 94.72%, respectively, revealing advanced value for high engineering applications of AS & co-system. The former mining district of Salsigne is situated in the Orbiel valley. Until the 20th century, it was the first gold mine in Europe and the first arsenic mine in the world. Rehabilitation has been performed during the 20 years that followed closure of the mines and factories, which led to the accumulation of storage of several million tons of waste in this valley. Nevertheless, a detailed description of the air quality of this area is still missing. The goal of the present study is to evaluate atmospheric contamination in the valley and identify the potential sources of this contamination. Active monitors (particulate matter samplers) and passive bioindicators (Tillandsia usneoides) were placed in strategic sites including remote areas. Over the year 2022, we assessed the air quality using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, as well as environmental risk indicators to report the level of contamination. Results indicate that the overall air quality in the valley is good with PM 10 levels in accordance with EU standards. Elemental concentrations in the exposed plants were lower than reported in the literature. Among the different sites studied, Nartau and La Combe du Saut, corresponding to waste storage and former mining industry sites, were the most affected. Chronic exposure over 1 year was highlighted for Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, Sb and As. Pollution Load Index and Enrichment Factors, which provided valuable information to assess the environmental condition of the valley's air, suggested that dust and resuspension of anthropogenic materials were the principle sources for most of the elements. Finally, this study also highlights that using T. usneoides could be a convenient approach for biomonitoring of metal (loid)-rich particles in the atmosphere within a former mining area, for at least one year. These results in turn allow to better understand the effects of chronic exposure on the ecosystem. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a primary contaminant of potential concern at the Newtown Creek superfund site. Measurements of PCBs in hundreds of samples of sediment (surface and cores) within Newtown Creek and at nearby reference locations were obtained from the Remedial Investigation (RI) databases. This data set was analyzed using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). A weight-of-evidence approach was used to attribute the PMF-generated fingerprints to sources. The PMF analysis generated eight factors (fingerprints or sources) that represent primary sources, such as Aroclors, as well as secondary sources, including the East River and Combined Sewer Outfalls (CSOs). In addition to the high-production volume Aroclors (1016/1242, 1248, 1254, and 1260), some less-widely used Aroclors (1232 and 1268) were found in Newtown Creek sediment. Aroclor 1268 is disproportionately abundant in the deepest sediments, while PCBs likely from CSOs are relatively more abundant in surface sediment. Soil salinization is a major environmental hazard that limits land availability. Human-induced salt pollutants (HISPs) are regularly presented in large quantities on the contaminated site (such as brine leakages and salt-water spills), causing a devastating shock with high salt stress to the ecosystem. For instance, Saskatchewan resulted in a 48% drop in wheat production and a 0.3% decline in provincial GDP. As the calcium-modified biochar can potentially ameliorate the negative effects of HISPs on plants and improve the plant, phytoremediation with calcium-modified biochar can have increased detoxification of hazardous pollutants from sites. Therefore, the objective of our study was to develop a biochar-assisted phytoremediation employing diverse approaches to calcium modification for the sustainable removal of HISPs. The co-pyrolyzed calcium biochar achieved a remarkable removal rate of 18.06%, reducing salinity from 9.44 to 7.81 dS/m. During a 90-day long-term phytoremediation, the overall reduction rate of calcium-modified biochar stimulated the germination and growth of Thinopyrum ponticum. The result of post-treatment further indicated that co-pyrolyzed biochar with Ca transferred salt into the plant compared to Ca-coated biochar, which only immobilized HISPs on its surface. These results offer two different treatment approaches for diverse situations involving HISPs contamination, addressing current in-situ spills and providing a calcium-related biochar technology for further research in desalination. The complexity of the subsurface contaminated by chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene (TCE) makes it challenging to gain a complete understanding of contamination distribution and establish a conceptual site model (CSM). High-resolution vertical contaminant concentration profiling across both the unsaturated zone and the saturated aquifer is desirable for mapping the distribution of contamination. A Fick's law-based polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dialysis passive sampler was developed and evaluated on a field scale for its potential application. This study tests the passive sampler at two TCE contaminated sites, and the sampling results were compared with the results from different sampling methods based on the relative percent difference. The PDMS dialysis passive sampler obtained more representative soil gas concentrations in the unsaturated zone than a portable monitoring and sampling device, which caused soil gas flow disturbance by soil gas pumping during sample collection. In the saturated aquifer sampling, the results obtained by the PDMS dialysis passive sampler correlated well with those obtained by a commercial polyethylene passive diffusion bag, and exhibited higher sensitivity under low TCE concentration conditions. Furthermore, the PDMS dialysis passive samplers were densely deployed inside each monitoring well at multiple depths, at two sites, to achieve high-resolution monitoring across the unsaturated zone and saturated aquifer. Based on the PDMS dialysis sampler data, a more comprehensive three-dimensional CSM was systematically established. Heavy metal pollution is an important environmental issue causing several hazards to organisms. In the present study, we investigated the uptake and accumulation of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn) in chicken lungs after six months of breeding on polymetallic-contaminated area in Jebel Ressas village. Genotoxicity in term of micronuclei frequency as well as oxidative stress in term of enzymatic activities of Catalase (CAT), Glutathion-S-Transferase (GST) and malondialdehydes accumulation (MDA) were performed. In addition, gene expression levels involved in oxidative stress genes (cat , sod and gst), metal homeostasis (mt1 and mt4) and DNA metabolism (p53 , bcl2 , caspase 3 and DNA ligase) were detected. Exposed chicken lungs revealed an important heavy metal accumulation of Cd and Zn co-occurring with oxidative status modulation. Transcriptomic results unveiled an upregulation of oxidative stress and homeostasis genes. On the other hand, genes involved in DNA metabolism indicated cellular functioning towards cells death and apoptosis modulation. Moreover, the histopathological examination revealed lung lesions in the chickens exposed to heavy metal contamination. Our study highlights the hazardous effects of heavy metal pollution on chicken respiratory system. Zinc (Zn) isotope compositions in soft mussel tissues help identify internal biological processes and track coastal Zn sources in coastal environments, thus aiding in managing marine metal pollution. This study investigated the seasonal and multi-decadal Zn isotope compositions of blue mussels (genus Mytilus) from two French coastal sites with contrasting Zn environmental contamination. Concurrently, we characterized the isotope ratios of sediments and plankton samples at each site to understand the associations between organisms and abiotic compartments. Our primary objective was to determine whether these isotope compositions trace long-term anthropogenic emission patterns or if they reflect short-term biological processes. The multi-decadal isotope profiles of mussels in the Loire Estuary and Toulon Bay showed no isotope variations, implying the enduring stability of the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic Zn sources over time. At seasonal scales, Zn isotope ratios were also constant; hence, isotope effects related to spawning and body growth were not discernible. The multi-compartmental analysis between the sites revealed that Toulon Bay exhibits a remarkably lower Zn isotope ratio across all studied matrices, suggesting the upward transfer of anthropogenic Zn in the food web. In contrast, the Zn isotope variability observed for sediments and organisms from the Loire Estuary fell within the natural baseline of this element. In both sites, adsorptive geogenic material carrying significant amounts of Zn masks the biological isotope signature of plankton, making it difficult to determine whether the Zn isotope ratio in mussels solely reflects the planktonic diet or if it is further modified by biological homeostasis. In summary, Zn isotope ratios in mussels offer promising avenues for delineating source-specific isotope signatures, contingent upon a comprehensive understanding of the isotope fractionation processes associated with the trophic transfer of this element through the plankton. To date, remediation, protection, and restoration of contaminated sites is a global concern. The current technologies to restore sediments characterized by heterogeneous characteristics, several pollutants, fine grains, and low hydraulic permeability are poorly effective; hence their remediation is still challenging. A promising approach for the sediment's remediation could be the electrochemical route since it is a not-expensive, effective and noninvasive in situ technology. Electrochemical remediation (ER) is commonly studied under relatively high electric fields (E ≥ 1 V cm−1) and using costly processing fluids in a three compartments cell aiming to desorb and transport the contaminants into the processing fluids (secondary dangerous effluent). In this work, contaminated marine sediments were electrochemically treated focusing on the insertion of electrodes directly in the sediments and adopting, for the first time for real sediments, low E values (≤ 0.25 V cm−1) for 4-days period. It was observed that PAHs can be simultaneously transported and degraded in situ preventing the production of a secondary dangerous effluent and reducing the energy consumption. Firstly, clay marine sediments dragged from Capo Granitola Coast (Trapani, Italy) spiked with five PAHs congeners (5PAHs), Hg and As were used as a simplified model matrix and treated to simulate a real case study. A total PAHs removal efficiency of 57% was reached after 96 h of treatment under 0.05 V cm−1. Then, real polluted marine sediments from Augusta Bay (Syracuse) and Bagnoli-Coroglio Bay (Naples) in the southern Italy were treated as real contaminated sediments to be restored, to validate the proposed approach for real cases. A quite good removal efficiency of PAHs was reached after 96 h of electrochemical treatment coupled with a low energetic consumption due to the rather E values adopted. In addition, it was observed that this approach, under the adopted conditions, is unsuitable for the remediation of Hg and As. Pollution with chloroethenes threaten groundwater resources worldwide. Cis-Dichloroethene (cDCE) and Trichloroethene (TCE) are widespread pollutants that often occur together at contaminated sites, either as primary discharges or as degradation products of anaerobic dechlorination. In this study, comprehensive microcosm experiments were conducted with groundwater samples of seven sites contaminated with chloroethenes. In total, twelve wells with different pollutant concentrations and chloroethene compositions were sampled, and aerobic microcosms including sterile controls were set up. The results revealed interactions as well as interferences between cDCE and TCE. First, co-metabolic cDCE degradation with TCE as growth substrate was detected for the first time in this work. Transformation yields Ty' (molar ratio of co-substrate degraded to primary substrate degraded) of the degradation process were determined and showed a linear relationship with the cDCE/TCE concentration ratio. At low cDCE/TCE ratio, aerobic metabolic TCE degradation can result in complete cDCE removal due to co-metabolic degradation. Secondly, interfering effects were detected at notable cDCE levels resulting in deceleration of TCE degradation and residual concentrations which were also correlating linearly with the cDCE/TCE concentration ratio. These findings are significant for investigating chloroethene contaminated sites and planning remediation strategies. In particular, the efficiency biological remediation methods in the presence of both pollutants can be evaluated more precisely through the knowledge of interactions and interferences. Our study emphasizes that co-contaminants and possible effects of contaminant mixtures on the degradation rates of individual substances should be considered in general. Electrokinetics is being applied in combination with common insituremediation technologies, e.g. permeable reactive barriers, bioremediation and in-situ chemical oxidation, to overcome experienced limitations in remediation of chlorinated ethenes in low-permeable subsurface soils. The purpose of this review is to evaluate state-of-theart for identification of major knowledge gaps to obtain robust and successful field-implementations. Some of the major knowledge gaps include the behavior and influence of induced transient changes in soil systems, transport velocities of chlorinated ethenes, and significance of site-specific parameters on transport velocities, e.g. heterogeneous soils and hydrogeochemistry. Furthermore, the various ways of reporting voltage distribution and transport rates complicate the comparison of transport velocities across studies. It was found, that for the combined EK-techniques, it is important to control the pH and redox changes caused by electrolysis for steady transport, uniform distribution of the electric field etc. Specifically for electrokinetically enhanced bioremediation, delivery of lactate and biodegrading bacteria is of the same order of magnitude. This review shows that enhancement of remediation technologies can be achieved by electrokinetics, but major knowledge gaps must be examined to mature EK as robust methods for successful remediation of chlorinated ethene contaminated sites. • EK-combined techniques overcome transport limitations experienced in low-permeable soils. • EK velocity of PCE and TCE is of comparable size to supplied reactants. • In EK-BIO, transport velocity of lactate and biodegrading bacteria are in the same order of magnitude. • General knowledge on the dependency of EK transport velocity on soil type is lacking. • Identified knowledge gaps must be filled in for robust and successful field-implementations. Bioremediation is an emerging and sustainable technique that can either occur naturally or be enhanced by introducing nutrients or bacteria able to degrade specific contaminants. In this study, the efficiencies of natural attenuation with nutrients, and bioaugmentation with nutrients and a consortium of five exogenous bacteria, were evaluated for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation in five highly contaminated soils from China, and Kuwait. The bioaugmentation treatment exhibited better efficiencies than the natural attenuation, and reached 48.10% of TPH degradation with a half-life of 41.76 d. The addition of exogenous bacteria also increased the removal of TPH in the highest contaminated soil sample. The concentration of TPH in that soil was reduced from 236, 500 mg kg−1 of dry soil to 176, 566 mg kg−1 of dry soil in 40 d, which was equivalent to 25.4% degradation of TPH. The degradation rate (1501.8 mg kg−1d−1 of TPH) was higher than those reported in previous studies with a lower concentration of TPH. The bioaugmented strains could withstand high concentrations of TPH and thrive in five different types of soils. Consequently, these strains can be used to remediate soils that are heavily contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. • Bioaugmentation with exogenous bacteria enhanced the degradation of TPH. • A higher degradation rate of TPH was observed in the highest contaminated sample. • The average half-life of TPH among all samples was reduced to 84.6 days. • Strains used are suitable for in situ bioremediation of highly contaminated sites. Based on the "waste-treat-waste" concept, biochars were produced from cadmium (Cd)-contaminated rice straw (CRSBs) at 300, 500, and 700 °C (CRSB300, CRSB500, and CRSB700). The risks of the Cd remaining in CRSBs were evaluated and the optimal biochar pyrolysis temperature for Cd removal was investigated. It was observed that 41% of the total Cd in the raw rice straw was exchangeable, which may pose significant risks to crops and humans. Pyrolyzing at 300 °C did not significantly alter the Cd fractions, while the exchangeable fraction of Cd greatly dropped to 5.79% at 500 °C and further to 2.12% at 700 °C. Increasing the highest pyrolysis temperature resulted in CRSBs with higher pH values, greater surface area, and smaller pore sizes, thus providing more rapid and efficient removal of Cd from aqueous solutions. For Cd removal tests, increasing pyrolysis temperature (300–700 °C) increased the total (24.8–55.1 mg/g) and non-exchangeable (18.9–52.8 mg/g) Cd concentrations immobilized on the CRSBs and significantly decreased the exchangeable Cd fraction (23.7%–4.85%). The growing number of contaminated sites across the world pose a considerable threat to the environment and human health. Remediating such sites is a cumbersome process with the complexity originating from the need for extensive sampling and testing during site characterization. Selection and design of remediation technology is further complicated by the uncertainties surrounding contaminant attributes, concentration, as well as soil and groundwater properties, which influence the remediation efficiency. Additionally, challenges emerge in identifying contamination sources and monitoring the affected area. Often, these problems are overly simplified, and the data gathered is underutilized rendering the remediation process inefficient. The potential of artificial intelligence (AI), machine-learning (ML), and deep-learning (DL) to address these issues is noteworthy, as their emergence revolutionized the process of data management/analysis. Researchers across the world are increasingly leveraging AI/ML/DL to address remediation challenges. Current study aims to perform a comprehensive literature review on the integration of AI/ML/DL tools into contaminated site remediation. A brief introduction to various emerging and existing AI/ML/DL technologies is presented, followed by a comprehensive literature review. In essence, ML/DL based predictive models can facilitate a thorough understanding of contamination patterns, reducing the need for extensive soil and groundwater sampling. In a recent estimate, 96 million tons of hazardous waste were produced in the European Union, most of which were handled among the member states. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are applied as flame retardants and plasticizers and are present in many products, e.g., electronics, which end up in the hazardous waste stream upon disposal. Given the growing body of information suggesting potential adverse health effects of OPEs, waste recycling workers who handle hazardous waste could potentially be at risk of elevated exposure to these chemicals. Using silicone wristbands, we evaluated OPE exposure among waste recycling workers who handled hazardous waste and compared their exposure to that of administrative workers from the same waste companies. Wristbands were extracted and analyzed for six OPEs, which were all detected in >75% of wristbands. Overall, the sum of tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (∑TCIPP) isomers was the most abundant OPE across all wristbands collected within the study. In general, the sum of tri(methyl phenyl) phosphate isomers (∑TMPP) was elevated for all waste workers (10β = 7.9), whereas tri- n -butyl phosphate (TnBP), tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), and ∑TMPP were 3–12 times higher among those specifically handling electronic and hazardous waste compared to the administrative workers (p < 0.05). Repeated wristband measurements from the same worker had fair to good consistency in OPE concentrations (intraclass correlation coefficients = 0.54–0.77), except for the two most volatile chlorinated OPEs. Taken together, our results suggest that waste recycling workers who handle electronic and hazardous waste have significantly elevated exposure to OPEs, and efforts to reduce these exposures should be considered. Liquid fossil fuels, collectively known as total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), are highly toxic and frequently leak into subsurface environments due to anthropogenic activities. As an in-situ biological remedial option for TPH contamination, aerobic TPH biodegradation is limited due to oxygen's low solubility in water, and because it is consumed quickly by aerobic bacteria. Thus, we investigated the potential of anaerobic TPH degradation by indigenous fermenting bacteria and Fe(III)-reducing bacteria. Twenty 6–10 m soil cores were collected from a closed military base subject to ongoing TPH contamination since the 1980s. Physicochemical and microbial properties were determined at 0.5-m intervals in each core. To assess the relationship between TPH degradation and microbial Fe(III) reduction, soil samples were grouped into high-TPH (>500 mg kg−1) and high-Fe(II) (>450 mg kg−1), high-TPH and low-Fe(II), low-TPH and high-Fe(II), and low-TPH and low-Fe(II) groups. Alpha diversity was significantly lower in high-TPH groups than in low-TPH groups, suggesting that high TPH concentrations exerted a strong selective pressure on bacterial communities. In the high-TPH and low-Fe(II) group, fermenting bacteria, including Microgenomatia and Chlamydiae , were more abundant, suggesting that TPH biodegradation occurred via fermentation. In the high-TPH and high-Fe(II) group, Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, including Geobacter and Zoogloea , were more abundant, suggesting that microbial Fe(III) reduction enhances TPH biodegradation. Surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation has been proved successful to remove dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) from contaminated sites. However, the underlying mechanisms of the DNAPL mobilization and solubilization at the pore scale remains to be addressed for efficient application to the field remediation system. In this work, the emerging microfluidic and imaging technologies are applied to investigate the dynamics of DNAPL remediation. Visualized experiments of the evolution of DNAPL remediation are performed to study the role of surfactant type, concentration and injection rate. The DNAPL remediation is dominated by mobilization followed by solubilization for most surfactants. Mobilization occurs as soon as surfactants and DNAPL are in contact until forming a new stable phase structure, and the solubilization continues until the end of injection. We observe the breakup behavior of long droplets and ganglia during the mobilization, which is attributed to the surfactant-reduced interfacial tension and thus expedites DNAPL mobilization and redistribution. During the solubilization, the formation of micelles incorporating DNAPL fractions increases the DNAPL concentration gradient and thus enhances the mass transfer, but the rate-limited diffusion of micelles reduces the mass transfer rate coefficient. Increasing the surfactant content and decreasing the injection rate can promote mobilization and solubilization. The DNAPL mobilization ability of the surfactants SDS and SDBS is stronger than SAOS and Tween 80 regardless of the injection rates. Tween 80 may be considered an ideal surfactant of only solubilization but not mobilization is desired. Soil and groundwater Cr(VI) pollution resulting from improper disposal and accidental spills is a critical problem worldwide. In this study, a comprehensive study was conducted to assess the hydrogeological conditions of a contaminated site, obtain spatiotemporal distribution and trend forecasts of pollutant Cr(VI), and determine the feasibility of applying clayey engineered barriers for pollution control. The results showed that the hydraulic conductivity (K) of the clayey barrier (1.56E-5 m/d) is several orders of magnitude lower than that of the stratum beneath the contaminated site, with K values ranging from 0.0014 to 4.76 m/d. Cr(VI) exhibits high mobility and a much higher concentration in the vadose zone, with maximum values of 6100 mg/kg in topsoil and 2090 mg/L in the perched aquifer. The simulation results indicated that the groundwater in the vicinity of the contaminated site, as well as downstream of the Lianshui River, is seriously threatened by Cr(VI). Notably, the pollution plume could occur downstream of the Lianshui River after 8 years. The retention efficiency of clayey engineered barriers will decrease over time, at 61.6% after 8 years and 33% after 20 years. The increasing presence of anthropogenic contaminants in aquatic environments poses challenges for species inhabiting contaminated sites. Due to their structural binding characteristics to ligands that inhibit or activate gene transcription, these xenobiotic compounds frequently target the nuclear receptor superfamily. The present work aims to understand the potential interaction between the hormone 17-β-estradiol, an environmental contaminant, and the nuclear receptors of Crassostrea gigas , the Pacific oyster. This filter-feeding, sessile oyster species is subject to environmental changes and exposure to contaminants. In the Pacific oyster, the estrogen-binding nuclear receptor is not able to bind this hormone as it does in vertebrates. However, another receptor may exhibit responsiveness to estrogen-like molecules and derivatives. We employed high-performance in silico methodologies, including three-dimensional modeling, molecular docking and atomistic molecular dynamics to identify likely binding candidates with the target moecule. Our approach revealed that among the C. gigas nuclear receptor superfamily, candidates with the most favorable interaction with the molecule of interest belonged to the NR1D, NR1H, NR1P, NR2E, NHR42, and NR0B groups. Interestingly, NR1H and NR0B were associated with planktonic/larval life cycle stages, while NR1P, NR2E, and NR0B were associated with sessile/adult life stages. The application of this computational methodological strategy demonstrated high performance in the virtual screening of candidates for binding with the target xenobiotic molecule and can be employed in other studies in the field of ecotoxicology in non-model organisms. Brownfields are a widespread problem in the world. The poor quality of these soils and the potential presence of contaminants can pose a significant threat to plant establishment and growth. However, it may be possible to improve their establishment with an appropriate agricultural practice. In this paper, the effects of two common planting strategies, seeding and transplanting, on the establishment and growth of the hyperaccumulator species Noccaea caerulescens and on its phytoextraction capacity were investigated. A field experiment was conducted by direct sowing of N. caerulescens seeds on a plot of contaminated Technosols in Jeandelaincourt, France. At the same time, seeds were sown on potting soil under controlled conditions. One month later, the seedlings were transplanted to the field. One year later, the results showed that transplanting improved the establishment and growth of N. caerulescens. This was due to a decrease in soil pH in the rhizosphere, which subsequently increased nutrient availability. This change in rhizosphere properties also appeared to be the key that improved microbial activities in the rhizosphere soil of transplanted plants. The observed improvement in both rhizosphere nutrient availability and microbial activities, in turn, increased auxin concentrations in the rhizosphere and consequently a more developed root system was observed in the transplanted plants. Furthermore, the Cd and Zn phytoextraction yield of transplanted plants is 2.5 and 5 times higher, respectively, than that of sown plants. In conclusion, N. caerulescens transplantation on contaminated sites seems to be an adequate strategy to improve plant growth and enhance trace metal phytoextraction. DDTs (DDT and its metabolites) contaminated sites urgently need to be treated efficiently and greenly. In this study, a horizontal planetary mechanochemical method with co-milling additives was developed aiming at efficiently degrading high-concentration DDTs in historical contaminated soil (∼7500 mg/kg). Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was firstly used to the mechanochemical degradation of DDTs in historical contaminated soil, with a degradation efficiency of over 95% after 1 h of milling under the optimal milling conditions (C R = 30:1, r = 500 rpm, R = 1:4). Mechanism study indicated that DDTs in soil were partially dechlorinated and mineralized. The main products formed might be chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, which need further treatment by ball milling or other methods. Under the action of mechanical energy, PMS could oxidize DDTs in soil through non-radical way rather than common radical way. Then, a comprehensive assessment of this remediation method was conducted by analyzing the changes in soil properties and acute biotoxicity after ball milling. Although PMS had a great performance on the degradation of DDTs, especially p, p'-DDE, it would cause the acidification and salinization of soil. Therefore, further pH adjustment and desalination treatment were suggested to reduce the negative impacts. In the Pearl River Delta of China, many sites are likely contaminated with aniline in the soil and arsenic (As) in the groundwater because of a high As background level and the prevailing printing and dyeing industry. This study is to explore the remediation performance of thermally activated persulfate oxidation for the sites with these two contaminants, aniline and As. The As influence on the aniline degradation and vice versa are also systematically investigated. When the molar ratio of aniline to persulfate is 1: 4.65, over 85% of aniline can be degraded at 40 °C in 24 h, and 100 μg L−1 As(III) in solution can be completely adsorbed by the soil. A higher pH favored the aniline degradation but disfavored the As(III) oxidation. Due to the strong buffer capacity of the soil, aniline in the soil could be more quickly degraded than those in the solution. The As(III), however, seem more easily oxidized in the absence of soil. The coexisting Fe2+ can substantially improve As(III) oxidation and immobilization, although the dilute Fe2+ solution may suppress the aniline degradation. The presence of aniline severely inhibited the As(III) oxidation and adsorption, likely due to the competition for the generated free radicals and the adsorption sites on the soils. In contrast, the existing As(III) has a slight effect on aniline degradation. These findings are believed to provide the theoretical basis for the remediation of aniline-arsenic contaminated sites. Thermally-enhanced soil vapor extraction (T-SVE) remediation technology is widely used in organic-contaminated sites due to its high efficiency, short remediation period and controllable secondary contamination. However, the remediation efficiency is affected by the complex site factors, which leads to the uncertainty of the remediation process and energy waste. Thus, it is necessary to optimize T-SVE systems to accurately remediate the sites. In this work, a pilot site of reagent factory in Tianjin was taken as the research object to validate the model, and the T-SVE process parameters of a VOCs-contaminated sites were predicted by this simulation method. The simulation results showed that the Nash efficiency coefficient E of the measured and simulated temperature rise data in the study area was 0.885, and the linear correlation coefficient R of the measured and simulated concentrations of cis -1,2-dichloroethylene after remediation was 0.877, indicating that this simulation method is highly reliable. Based on this numerical simulation method, some parameters of the T-SVE process at the VOCs-contaminated site of an insulation plant in Harbin were simulated and optimized. Included a heating well spacing of 3.0 m, extraction pressure of 40 Kpa, extraction well influence radius of 4.35 m, extraction flow rate of 2.97 × 10-4 m3/s, and a theoretical number of 25 extraction wells (adjusted to 29 wells in practice), and the corresponding extraction well layout has been designed. It is challenging to conduct groundwater contamination risk assessment in fractured aquifers containing a large number of complex fractures, especially in a situation where the uncertainty of massive fractures and fluid-rock interactions is inevitable. In this study, a novel probabilistic assessment framework based on discrete fracture network (DFN) modeling is proposed to assess the uncertainty of groundwater contamination in fractured aquifers. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is employed to quantify the uncertainty of fracture geometry, and the environmental and health risks of the contaminated site are probabilistically analyzed in conjunction with the water quality index (WQI) and hazard index (HI). The results show that the contaminant transport behavior in fractured aquifers can be strongly affected by the distribution of the fracture network. The proposed framework of groundwater contamination risk assessment is capable of practically accounting for the uncertainties involved in the mass transport process and effectively assessing the contamination risk of fractured aquifers. In recent years, the broader environmental impacts of remediation that arise from different remediation activities has drawn attention of practitioners, remediation design professionals and academicians to evaluate the net environmental benefit of environmental remediation projects. The main objective of this paper is to describe the Quantitative Assessment of Life Cycle Sustainability (QUALICS) framework, a new tool developed to strengthen decision-making in the selection of sustainable remedial technologies for the clean-up of contaminated sites. The proposed framework is a combination of two multi-criteria evaluation methods namely, the Integrated Value Model for Sustainable Assessment (MIVES) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The QUALICS uses a multi-criteria assessment framework to support decision-making in remediation projects. A description of the methodology adopted for sustainability assessment of alternative remedial strategies using QUALICS framework is presented in this study. In addition, a case study is discussed to demonstrate the application of the QUALICS framework for the sustainability assessment of different remediation options for clean-up of a contaminated site. The case study involves sustainability assessment of different remediation options namely, electrokinetic remediation (EKR), excavation/disposal, and phytoremediation for remediation of a contaminated site. A sensitivity analysis was also performed for the EKR option by varying different parameters including electrode materials, energy source, electrolyte used, to analyze their influence on the sustainability of the alternative remedial options. Abstract The chemical forms of mercury (Hg), particularly methylmercury (MeHg), in songbird feathers from an abandoned mining region were analyzed via X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis (XANES). In feathers, proportions of MeHg as total mercury (75.6–100%) quantified by the XANES were directly comparable to the chemical extraction values (74.1–95.9%). Most of MeHg were bound with cysteine (Cys) and reduced glutathione (GSH), whereas inorganic mercury (IHg) was mainly bound with GSH. These results were consistent with those found in fish muscles and human hairs of both fish consumers and occupational Hg exposure populations. Our study suggested that chemical forms and speciation of Hg were highly dependent on the exposure sources and food consumption, respectively. Bird feathers were able to selectively accumulate MeHg due to their special binding ways. However, detailed mechanisms of Hg accumulation in bird feathers remain to be further elucidated. Abstract In order to understand the sources and fate of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in several species of benthic biota, including clams (Corbicula fluminea), oligochaetes (Lumbriculus variegatus) , and mussels (Margaritifera falcata and Anodonta nuttalliana) at the Portland Harbor Superfund Site (PHSS), their congener fingerprints were examined. First, diagnostic ratios of congeners known to be metabolizable vs. recalcitrant in the cytochrome P450 (CYP) pathway were significantly lower in biota than in its co-located sediment, indicating metabolism may have occurred. Next, the congener patterns were analyzed using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). The dominant fingerprint (by mass) in benthic biota is related to Aroclor 1260 but displays differences in the fingerprint that are consistent with weathering via absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). This fingerprint is similar to one isolated from PCBs in fish from Washington State, indicative of common metabolic pathways and consistent with CYP metabolism. When metabolism is taken into account, the spatial distribution of the PMF-isolated PCB fingerprints in biota matches well with those from co-located sediment samples, suggesting that the same mix of sources at one location partitions into biota and sediment. In accordance to their higher hydrophobicity, higher molecular weight (MW) PCB formulations were proportionately more abundant in biota than in sediment, although low MW PCBs (e.g., PCBs 4 and 11) do bioaccumulate in benthic organisms and should not be ignored in risk assessment efforts. Finally, fingerprinting suggests potential reasons why lab-based and field-based biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) differ substantially for bivalves. With the extensive application of halogenated aromatic compounds, including 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), improper treatment or discharge contribute to persistently harmful effects on humans and the ecosystem, rendering the identification and monitoring of 2,4,6-TCP in the aquatic environment urgently required. In this study, a highly sensitive electrochemical platform was developed using active-edge-S and high-valence-Mo rich MoS 2 /polypyrrole composites. MoS 2 /PPy illustrates superior electrochemical performance and catalytic activity and has not been explored for detecting chlorinated phenols previously. The local environment of polypyrrole induces the richness of active edge S and a high oxidation state of Mo species in the composites, both of which endorse a sensitive anodic current response due to the favored oxidation of 2,4,6-TCP through nucleophilic substitution. Also, the higher complementarity between pyrrole and 2,4,6-TCP with respective electron-rich and electron-poor features through π-π stacking interactions enhances the specific detection capability of 2,4,6-TCP by the MoS 2 /polypyrrole-modified electrode. The MoS 2 /polypyrrole-modified electrode achieved a linear range of 0.1–260 μM with an ultralow limit of detection of 0.009 μM. Additionally, the structural stability boosted by the linkage of polypyrrole and MoS 2 results in good resistance and satisfactory recovery in real water samples. A passive treatment system (PTS), including two parallel vertical flow bioreactors (VFBR), was constructed in 2008 for the treatment of unabated net-alkaline ferruginous mine drainage in the Tar Creek Superfund Site in northeastern Oklahoma. Water quality data collected since the PTS began operation indicate significant removal of trace metals in the VFBR. Results of a sequential extraction procedure (SEP) performed on substrate samples showed that the majority of Cd, Co, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn were retained in the refractory organic/sulfide fraction. Subsequent acid volatile sulfide/simultaneously extracted metals (AVS/SEM) analyses confirmed the retention of Cd, Fe, Pb, and Zn as sulfides, but Co and Ni results were less certain. The majority of trace metals were retained as insoluble products in the VFBR, while up to 20% of most of the trace metals were retained in soluble, bioavailable fractions. Old glassworks sites have been always associated with contamination by different trace elements like Pb, Cd, As, Zn and others. The mixture of soil and waste glass of particle sizes <2 mm at one of the oldest Swedish glassworks (the Pukeberg) was studied by analyzing the trace elements content, organic content (3.6%) and pH (7.4). The results showed hazardous concentrations of Pb (1525 mg/kg), Ba (1312 mg/kg), Sb (128 mg/kg), Cd (36 mg/kg), As (118 mg/kg), Zn (1154 mg/kg) and Co (263 mg/kg) exceeded the Swedish guidelines of contaminated soil. Batch chemical extraction by the chelating agents EDTA, DTPA and the biodegradable NTA were performed to study the effect of chelating agent concentration and mixing time on the extraction efficiencies by following a Box-Wilson design of experiments. The results displayed good extraction efficiencies (less than 41%) of Pb, Cd, As and Zn by the EDTA, DTPA and NTA, which seemed depends on the type of chelator. A new naphthalene bioreporter was designed and constructed in this work. A new vector, pWH1274_Nah, was constructed by the Gibson isothermal assembly fused with a 9 kb naphthalene-degrading gene nahAD ( nahAa nahAb nahAc nahAd nahB nahF nahC nahQ nahE nahD ) and cloned into Acinetobacter ADPWH_lux as the host, capable of responding to salicylate (the central metabolite of naphthalene). The ADPWH_Nah bioreporter could effectively metabolize naphthalene and evaluate the naphthalene in natural water and soil samples. This whole-cell bioreporter did not respond to other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; pyrene, anthracene, and phenanthrene) and demonstrated a positive response in the presence of 0.01 μM naphthalene, showing high specificity and sensitivity. The bioluminescent response was quantitatively measured after a 4 h exposure to naphthalene, and the model simulation further proved the naphthalene metabolism dynamics and the salicylate-activation mechanisms. The ADPWH_Nah bioreporter also achieved a rapid evaluation of the naphthalene in the PAH-contaminated site after chemical spill accidents, showing high consistency with chemical analysis. The engineered Acinetobacter variant had significant advantages in rapid naphthalene detection in the laboratory and potential in situ detection. The sustainable management of dredged sediment from contaminated sites needs to consider the end-use of the treated sediment. In this regard, modifying conventional sediment treatment techniques to generate a product that is suitable for a range of terrestrial uses is necessary. In the present study, we evaluated the product quality of treated sediment as a potential plant-growth medium following the thermal treatment of marine sediment contaminated by petroleum. The contaminated sediment was subject to thermal treatment at temperatures of 300, 400, or 500 °C, and no, low, or moderate oxygen availability, and the resulting treated sediment was analyzed in terms of its bulk properties, spectroscopic properties, organic contaminants, water-soluble salts and organic matter, and the leachability and extractability of heavy metals. All operational combinations for the treatment process reduced the total petroleum hydrocarbon content of the sediment from 4922 mg kg−1 to lower than 50 mg kg−1. The thermal treatment process stabilized the heavy metals in the sediment, reducing the zinc and copper concentration by up to 58.9% and 89.6%, respectively, in the leachate from the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure. The hydrophilic organic and/or sulfate salt byproducts of the treatment were phytotoxic, but these can easily be removed by washing the sediment with water. By combining the sediment analysis results with experimental data from barley germination and early-growth tests, the end product was found to be of higher quality when higher temperatures and lower oxygen availability were employed in the treatment process. These findings demonstrate that it is possible to retain the natural organic resources of the original sediment by optimizing the thermal treatment, thus ensuring a suitably high product quality for use as a plant-growth medium. Organochlorine pesticides show biological toxicity and their degradation typically takes many years. Previous studies of agrochemical-contaminated areas have mainly focused on limited target compounds, and emerging pollutants in soil have been overlooked. In this study, we collected soil samples from an abandoned agrochemical-contaminated area. Target analysis and non-target suspect screening by gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry were combined for qualitative and quantitative analysis of organochlorine pollutants. Target analysis showed that dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) were the main pollutants. With concentrations between 3.96 × 106 and 1.38 × 107 ng/g, these compounds posed significant health risks at the contaminated site. Non-target suspect screening identified 126 organochlorine compounds, most of which were chlorinated hydrocarbons and 90% of the compounds contained a benzene ring structure. The possible transformation pathways of DDT were inferred from proven pathways and the compounds identified by non-target suspect screening that had similar structures to DDT. This study will be useful for studies of the degradation mechanism of DDT. Semi-quantitative and hierarchical cluster analysis of compounds in soil showed that the distribution of contaminants in soil was influenced by the types of pollution sources and distance to them. Twenty-two contaminants were found in the soil at relatively high concentrations. The toxicities of 17 of these compounds are currently not known. Traditional phase equilibrium models usually depend on simplified assumptions and empirical parameters, which are difficult to obtain during regular site investigations. As a result, they often under- or over-estimate soil vapor concentrations for assessing the risks of volatile organic compound (VOC)-contaminated sites. In this study, we develop several machine learning models to predict soil vapor concentrations using 2225 soil-soil vapor data pairs collected from seven contaminated sites in northern China. Compared to the classic dual equilibrium desorption model, the random forest (RF) model can provide more accurate predictions of soil vapor concentrations by at least 1–2 orders of magnitude. Among the employed covariates, soil concentration and organic carbon-water partition coefficient are two of the most significant explanatory covariates affecting soil vapor concentrations. Further examination of the developed RF model reveals the phase equilibrium behavior of VOCs in soil is that: the soil vapor concentration increases with soil concentration at different rates in the first two intervals but remains almost unchanged in the last interval; the solid-vapor partitioning interface may still exist at up to 15% mass water content in our simulations. These findings can help site investigators perform more accurate risk assessments at VOC-contaminated sites. Increasing land degradation by high level of metal wastes is of prime concern for the global research communities. In this respect, halophytes having specific features like salt glands, exclusion of excess ions, heavy metals (HMs) compartmentalization, large pool of antioxidants, and associations with metal-tolerant microbes are of great promise in the sustainable clean-up of contaminated sites. However, sustainable clean-up of HMs by a particular halophyte plant species is governed considerably by physico-chemical characteristics of soil and associated microbial communities. The present review has shed light on the superiority of halophytes over non-halophytes, mechanisms of metal-remediation, recent developments and future perspectives pertaining to the utilization of halophytes in management of HM-contaminated sites with the aid of bibliometric analysis. The results revealed that the research field is receiving considerable attention in the last 5–10 years by publishing ∼50–90% documents with an annual growth rate of 15.41% and citations per document of 29.72. Asian (viz., China, India, and Pakistan) and European (viz., Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Argentina) countries have been emerged as the major regions conducting and publishing extensive research on this topic. The investigations conducted both under in vitro and field conditions have reflected the inherent potential of halophyte as sustainable research tool for successfully restoring the HM-contaminated sites. The findings revealed that the microbial association with halophytes under different challenging conditions is a win-win approach for metal remediation. Therefore, exploration of new halophyte species and associated microorganisms (endophytic and rhizospheric) from different geographical locations, and identification of genes conferring tolerance and phytoremediation of metal contaminants would further advance the intervention of halophytes for sustainable ecological restoration. In-situ remediating phosphogypsum (PG) for cemented paste backfill (CPB) in the contaminated site is economic management for promoting sustainable developments in the phosphate industry. This study concerns the combined use of NaOH pretreatment and ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) additives to promote the solidification/stabilization of PG with a lower carbon footprint pathway. According to physico-chemical analyses, the NaOH pretreatment effectively removed approximately 95% of F within the PG, which may originally be present as sparingly soluble fluorides or coexisting with silicates. The micro mineralogical characterization illustrates that the pretreatment can accelerate the early age hydration, with more hydration products observed, including calcium silicate hydrates and ettringite, effective F and P retention candidates. Whereas the incorporation of GGBFS plays an essential role in promoting the generation of additional cement hydrates at the following stages. The macro mechanical performance analysis indicates that the mixtures of pretreated-PG-OPC-GGBFS exhibit an excellent mechanical performance satisfying the design criteria. Subsequent elemental mapping and toxicity characteristic leaching procedures demonstrate that this combined approach has a competitive F and P immobilization ability compared to the typical OPC binder and individual GGBFS addition. The newly formed phases effectively controlled the concentration of F and P through adsorption, incorporation, or encapsulation. Objectively, the proposed methodology can be a promising candidate pathway for extrapolating the in-situ immobilization of PG. Rational utilization of soil resources and remediation of contaminated soils are imperative due to the rapidly growing demand for clean soils. Currently, many in-situ remediation technologies are less suitable at low-permeability sites due to the limitations of soil permeability. This work defines a low-permeability site as a site with hydraulic conductivity less than 10−4 cm/s, and summarizes the migration characteristics of representative contaminants at low-permeability sites, and discusses the principles and practical applications of different technologies suitable for the remediation of low-permeability sites, including electrokinetic remediation technology, polymer flushing technology, fracturing technology, and in-situ thermal remediation technology. Enhanced and combined remediation technologies are further described because one remediation technology cannot remediate all contaminants. The prospects for the application of remediation technologies to low-permeability sites are also proposed. Arsenic-alkali residue (AAR) from antimony production can pose significant health and environmental hazards due to the risk of arsenic (As) leaching. In this study, geopolymer composite synthesized from fly ash (FA) was investigated for efficient stabilization of high-arsenic-containing AAR (As 2 O 3 of 22.74 wt%). Two industrial wastes, e.g., granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) with active calcium composition and water-quenched slag (WQS) from lead-zinc smelting with active iron composition, were investigated for the reinforcement of AAR geopolymer solidification. A wide pH stabilization (from pH = 3–pH = 12) of AAR with the geopolymer composite was successfully achieved, and As leaching concentration of geopolymer with the addition of 5 wt% AAR was significantly reduced from 2343.73 mg/L (AAR) to that below 0.18 mg/L, which successfully meet the regulatory limit of Chinese domestic waste landfill (GB, 18598−2019, 1.2 mg/L) and hazardous waste landfill (GB16889-2008, 0.3 mg/L). Johnbaumite (Ca 5 (AsO 4) 3 (OH)) was formed in geopolymer composite and leached samples with initial pH from 2.6 to 6 (final pH from 5.54 to 13.15). Magnetite and iron hydroxide phases with strong adsorption and/or As co-precipitation capability were also observed. As stabilization was also achieved with iron oxidation from As(III) to As(V). This study solves the problem of unstable As leaching at different pH for the solidification of arsenic-bearing solid waste, and provides a promising and practical strategy for efficient solidification/stabilization of AAR as well as other similar arsenic-bearing solid wastes with geopolymer composite. The environmental conditions at a contaminated site will impact on the indigenous microbial communities, with implications for the removal of pollutants. An analysis of the characteristics of microbial communities in petroleum-contaminated groundwater can give insights into the relationships between microbial community and environmental factors, and provide guidance about how microbes can be used to remediate and regulate petroleum-contaminated groundwater. This study focuses on two petroleum-contaminated sites in northeast China, the physico-chemical-biological changes in petroleum-contaminated groundwater were analyzed, the response relationship between hydro-chemical indicators and microbial communities was characterized, and the bioindicator that can reflect the petroleum contamination status were established for environmental monitoring and management. The results showed that Proteobacteria was the dominant bacteria in petroleum-contaminated groundwater, with a relative abundance of 42.45%–91.19%. pH, TDS, DO, NO 3 −, NO 2 −, SO 4 2−, NH 4 +, Al, and Mn have significant effects on microbial community. The effect of petroleum pollutants on microbial communities is not only related to the concentration and composition of the pollutants themselves, but also could indirectly affect microbial communities by changing the content of inorganic electron acceptor components such as iron, manganese, sulfate and nitrate in groundwater, and this indirect effect is significantly greater than the direct impact of pollutants on microbial communities. In petroleum-contaminated groundwater, the dominant genera (Polaromonas , Caulobacter) and microbial metabolic functions (methanol oxidation, methylotrophy, ureolysis, and reductive biosynthesis) of the indigenous microbial community can be used as bioindicators to indicate petroleum contamination status. TNT, or 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, is a common explosive that can contaminate soil and groundwater in production sites, military training areas, and disposal locations. The compound is highly toxic; therefore, there is an urgent need to rehabilitate the impacted environments. Harnessing the microbial ability to biodegrade TNT into environmentally harmless compound(s) is one approach to remediating contaminated sites. In our study, we report on the genomic and metabolic ability of Stenotrophomonas strain SG1 to degrade TNT under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The bacterial strain SG1 was first isolated as a contaminant from a culture of Diaphorobacter sp. strain DS2 over minimal media supplemented with TNT. The draft genome assembly of strain SG1 is ∼4.7 Mb and is distributed among 358 contigs. The homology search against the custom database of enzymes responsible for TNT biodegradation revealed the presence of three N-ethylmaleimide reductases (NemA) with a defined KEGG ortholog and KEGG pathway of TNT degradation. The presence of respiratory nitrate reductases has also been mapped, which supports denitrification under anaerobic conditions. Experimentally, the TNT transformation rate accelerated when carbon sources, such as sodium acetate, sodium citrate, sodium succinate, sucrose, and glucose (final concentration of 5 mM), were added. Citrate promoted the highest growth and TNT transformation ratio (88.35%) in 120 h. With the addition of 5 mM ammonium chloride, TNT completely disappeared in the citrate and sucrose-containing treatments in 120 h. However, higher biomass was obtained in the sucrose and glucose-containing treatments in 120 h. During incubation, the formation of amino dinitrotoluene isomers, dinitrotoluene isomers, trinitrobenzene, azoxy isomers, diaryl hydroxylamines, and corresponding secondary amines was confirmed by GC/MS and UPLC/MS. 2-Amino-4-nitrotoluene, 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene, and 2-amino-6-nitrotoluene were also identified in the culture supernatant by GC/MS. Under anaerobic conditions, TNT completely disappeared in the citrate and citrate plus nitrate treatments. Since the strain shows the ability to remove TNT, this research should be useful in basic research and practical applications for removing TNT from wastewater. Reproduction is a significant biological process for organisms responding to environmental stresses, however, little is known about the reproductive strategies of invertebrates under long-term exposure to contaminations. In this study, earthworm Metaphire californica (Kinberg, 1867) from contaminated fields with an increased metal gradient were collected to investigate their reproductive responses. The results showed heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb) induced histological damage to earthworms' seminal vesicles, including tissue disorders and cavities, and decreases in mature spermatozoa. Sperm morphology analysis indicated deformity rates were up to13.2% (e.g. head swollen or missing) for worms from the most contaminated site, which coincided with DNA damages. Furthermore, the computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system was employed for the evaluation of sperm kinetic traits. Results suggested earthworms exposed to higher contamination showed a lower sperm viability rate but faster sperm velocity after re-exposure with Cd solution (like the curvilinear velocity and straight-line velocity paraments) compared with those from relatively clean sites. The activities of lactate dehydrogenase and sorbitol dehydrogenase showed the highest 32.5% and 12.5% up-regulation respectively with the increased metal gradient. In conclusion, this study elucidated the earthworm reproductive toxicity, underlying reproductive compensation, metal stress-induced damages, and adaptive responses caused by heavy metal exposure, while also providing the possibility of sperm trait analysis (CASA) for related earthworm toxicological studies. Accumulation of plastics alarms a risk to the environment worldwide. As polyethylene pterephthalate (PET) degrades slowly and produces hazardous substances, therefore, it is now essential to eliminate plastic wastes from the environment. Given that, the current study is concerned with PET degradation potential of naturally occurring microbial strains isolated from plastic waste dumping sites, Sarcina aurantiaca (TB3), Bacillus subtilis (TB8), Aspergillus flavus (STF1), Aspergillus niger (STF2). To test the biodegradability of PET films, the films were incubated for 60 days at 37 °C with the microorganisms designated as TB3, TB8, STF1, STF2 and the microbial consortium (TB3+TB8+STF1+STF2) in Minimal Salt Medium and Bushnell Hass Broth. Hydrophobicity, viability, and total protein content of isolates were investigated. Using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry to measure variations in functional groups and carbonyl index on PET surface, biodegradation process was affirmed by fissures and modified surfaces. Results revealed that the microbial consortium (S. aurantiaca + B. subtilis + A. flavus + A. niger) that the weight loss of PET films was 28.78%. The microbial consortium could be used to treat PET waste, posing no health or environmental risks. Chlorinated ethenes (CEs) are common and persistent contaminants of soil and groundwater. Their degradation is mostly driven by a process of bacterial reductive dechlorination (also called organohalide respiration) in anaerobic conditions. This study summarizes the outcomes of the long-term in-situ application of glycerol for the enhanced reductive dechlorination of CEs on a highly contaminated site. Glycerol injection resulted in an almost immediate increase in the abundance of fermentative Firmicutes, which produce essential sources of carbon (acetate) and electrons (H 2) for organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) and change groundwater conditions to be suitable for OHRB growth. The decreased redox potential of groundwater promoted also the proliferation of sulfate-reducing bacteria, which compete for electron donors with OHRB but at the same time support their growth by producing essential corrinoids and acetate. A considerable increase in the abundance of OHRB Dehalococcoides , concurrently with vinyl chloride (VC) reductase gene levels, was revealed by real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) method. Consistent with the shifts in bacterial populations, the concentrations of pollutants tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene decreased during the monitoring period, with rising levels of cis -1,2-dichloroethylene, VC, and most importantly, the final CE degradation products: ethene and ethane. Our study implies the importance of syntrophic bacterial interactions for successful and complete CE degradation and evaluates glycerol as convenient substrate to enhance reductive dechlorination and as an effective source of electrons for OHRB. Bio-monitoring of mercury (Hg) in air using transplanted and in-situ lichens was conducted at three locations in Slovenia: (I) the town of Idrija in the area of the former Hg mine, where Hg contamination is well known; (II) Anhovo, a settlement with a cement production plant, which is a source of Hg contamination, and (III) Pokljuka, a part of a national park. Lichens from Pokljuka were transplanted to different sites and sampled four times—once per season, from January 2020 to February 2021. Lichens were set on tree branches, fences, and under cover, allowing them to be exposed to different environmental conditions (e.g., light and rain). The in-situ lichens were sampled at the beginning and the end of the sampling period. The highest concentrations were in the Idrija area, which was consistent with previous research. Significant mass-dependent fractionation has been observed in transplanted lichens during summer period. The δ 202Hg changed from −3.0‰ in winter to −1.0‰ in summer and dropped again to the same value in winter the following year. This trend was observed in all samples, except those from the most polluted Idrija sampling site, which was in the vicinity of the former Hg ore-smelting plant. This was likely due to large amounts of Hg originating from polluted soil close to the former smelting plant with a distinct isotopic fingerprint in this local area. The Δ 199Hg in transplanted lichens ranged from −0.5‰ to −0.1‰ and showed no seasonal trends. These findings imply that seasonality, particularly in summer months, may affect the isotopic fractionation of Hg and should be considered in the sampling design and data interpretation. This trend was thus described in lichens for the first time. The mechanism behind such change is not yet fully understood. Morphological, structural and compositional alterations in shells of molluscs have been proposed as putative biomarkers of chemical contamination in coastal zones. Despite this, few studies were carried out using top predator gastropods which tend to be more susceptible to contamination exposure. Thus, the present study assessed disturbances on shells of Stramonita brasiliensis considering compression resistance and organic and mineralogical matrix composition, related to morphometric alterations. Results showed reductions in compression resistance and organic matrix content associated with higher contaminated sites. In addition, a predominance of calcite polymorphs was seen in shells obtained in polluted areas. Such outputs were consistent with local contamination levels which may have induced the observed alterations. Thus, changes in mollusc shells showed good performance as potential biomarkers of coastal contamination, being probably observed in other species of carnivorous gastropods around the world. From the 1950s to the 1970s, three Superfund sites discharged polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated waste upstream of the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne, resulting in PCB contamination of groundwater, soil, and sediment in the surrounding area. Given the persistence of PCBs in the environment and in human tissues, there are continued concerns regarding PCB exposures and the potential for adverse health effects in the community. We developed an evidence map of PCB research at Akwesasne in order to characterize the available data and to highlight potential research needs. Human health and exposure biomarker studies were identified from a literature search based on population, exposure, comparator, and outcome (PECO) criteria. Data extracted from references that met the inclusion criteria after full-text review included study characteristics (e.g., sample size, study design, sampling years), details on PCB measurements (e.g., analytical method, number of congeners analyzed, method detection limits), and results (e.g., PCB levels and summary of study conclusions). We identified 33 studies, conducted between 1986 and 2013, that examined PCB exposure characteristics and health effects in residents of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation. Organizing this literature into an evidence map including information on study cohort, congener groupings, exposure biomarker characteristics, and health effects allowed us to identify research gaps and to suggest future research priorities for the community. We identified current PCB exposure levels and PCB source characterization as major uncertainties, both of which could be addressed by new studies of PCB concentrations in environmental media. We assessed the impacts of an innovative Hg water treatment system on a small, industrially-contaminated stream in the southeastern United States. The treatment system, installed in 2007, removes Hg from wastewater using tin (Sn) (II) chloride followed by air stripping. Mercury concentrations in the receiving stream, Tims Branch, decreased from >100 to ∼10 ng/L in the four years following treatment, and Hg body burdens in redfin pickerel ( Esox americanus ) decreased by 70% at the most contaminated site. Tin concentrations in water and fish increased significantly in the tributary leading to Tims Branch, but concentrations remain below levels of concern for human health or ecological risks. While other studies have shown that Sn may be environmentally methylated and methyltin can transfer its methyl group to Hg, results from our field studies and sediment incubation experiments suggest that the added Sn to the Tims Branch watershed is not contributing to methylmercury (MeHg) production or bioaccumulation in this system. The stannous chloride treatment system installed at Tims Branch was effective at removing Hg inputs and reducing Hg bioaccumulation in the stream, but future studies are needed to assess longer term impacts of Sn on the environment. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants of critical environmental and public health concern and their elimination from contaminated sites is significant for the environment. Biodegradation studies have demonstrated the ability of bacteria in biofilm conformation to enhance the biodegradation of pollutants. In this study, we used our newly developed microfluidic platform to explore biofilm development, properties, and applications of fluid flow, as a new technique for screening PAHs-degrading biofilms. The optimization and evaluation of the flow condition in the microchannels were performed through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The formation of biofilms by PAHs-degrading bacteria Pseudomonas sp. P26 and Gordonia sp. H19, as pure cultures and co-culture, was obtained in the developed microchips. The removal efficiencies of acenaphthene, fluoranthene and pyrene were determined by HPLC. All the biofilms formed in the microchips removed all tested PAHs, with the higher removal percentages observed with the Pseudomonas sp. P26 biofilm (57.4% of acenaphthene, 40.9% of fluoranthene, and 28.9% of pyrene). Pseudomonas sp. P26 biofilm removed these compounds more efficiently than planktonic cultures. This work proved that the conformation of biofilms enhances the removal rate. It also provided a new tool to rapid and low-cost screen for effective pollutant-degrading biofilms.
