With the development of coal chemical technology, a large amount of gasification slag and wastewater are produced through coal gasification. Efficient gasification slag utilization and wastewater treatment have attracted much attention. In this study, gasification slag was modified and used as a low-cost and efficient catalyst to activate persulfate for acetaminophen degradation. Via the analysis of high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the surfaces of nitric acid and calcined modified gasification slag retained a considerable number of carbonyl and graphite N functional groups. These proved to be effective active sites for the activation of persulfate. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the gasification slag was composed of carbon and SiO2. The evaluation of catalytic activity and application of density functional theory proved that the interaction between carbonyl and graphitic nitrogen significantly affected the catalyst activity. When the ratio of graphitic nitrogen to carbonyl was 1:3, the adsorption and activation of persulfate were significantly enhanced. The results of the quenching experiments also confirmed that the non-free radical pathway is the main pathway to activate persulfate using the gasification slag. The use of algae-based green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) for bioremediation is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional approaches. Algal-mediated synthesis offers several benefits over other biogenic processes, such as plants, bacteria, and fungi, including ease of synthesis, scalability, and rapid synthesis. Algae are readily available in nature, nontoxic, and can produce various types of metal oxide nanoparticles. This approach could significantly accelerate the development of novel algae-nanomaterials with improved properties and performance, leading to more efficient and cost-effective bioremediation of pollutants from water solutions, seawater, and industrial effluent. This review focuses on the biogenic fabrication of metal oxide nanoparticles based on aquatic plants (microalgae and seaweeds) due to their many advantages and attractive applications in pollutant remediation from aqueous solutions. Additionally, photocatalysis is highlighted as a promising tool for the remediation of industrial effluents due to its efficacy, ease of use, quick oxidation, cost-effectiveness, and reduced synthesis of harmful byproducts. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from industrial processes have high stability, low activity, and toxicity which cause continuous harm to human health and the atmospheric environment. Catalytic combustion has the advantages of low energy consumption and low cost and is expected to be one of the most effective methods to remove VOCs. At present, the selection of low cost, high activity, and durability catalysts are still a difficult problem. Industrial emissions of VOCs contain a certain amount of aromatic hydrocarbons; these substances are highly toxic substances, and, once inhaled by the human body, will cause serious harm to health. In this paper, the principle, advantages, and disadvantages of VOCs processing technology are analyzed in detail, and the catalytic combustion of aromatic hydrocarbons in VOCs is reviewed, including catalyst, reaction conditions, catalyst selection, inactivation reasons, and structure use. In addition, the deactivation effects of chlorine and sulfur on catalysts during the catalytic combustion of VOCs are discussed in detail. Finally, on the basis of literature research, the prospect of catalytic combustion of VOCs is presented, which provides influential information for further research on VOCs processing technology. Growing industry and its effluents create a serious environmental concern. Various industrial wastes such as toxic dyes and volatile organic compounds are posing a threat to a clean environment because of their non-biodegradable nature and high chemical stability. In recent years, the degradation of toxic dyes and drugs by photo-catalysts has gained much importance and proved a successful approach to capture light by hybrid photo-catalysts for decomposing toxic organic molecules. This work presents the synthesis of a poly(o-anisidine)-based composite with graphitic carbon nitride and zinc oxide (POA/g-C3N4/ZnO) and its utilization as a photo-catalyst. Various analytical techniques investigated the synthesized photo-catalysts' chemical structure, crystallinity, and morphology. The degradation of Congo red dye evaluated the efficiency of the photo-catalyst in an aqueous medium under ultraviolet light. It was revealed that the photo-catalytic activity of the synthesized POA/g-C3N4/ZnO composites show 81.43%, 92.28%, and 87.05% degradation. A green and low-cost removal method for cyanate, a toxic byproduct from the treatment of cyanide, is still needed. Cyanase converts cyanate to CO2 and NH3, but its industrial practicality is limited because the reaction requires HCO3− as a substrate. In this study, we used carbonic anhydrase from Sulfurihydrogenibium azorense (SazCA) to provide HCO3− for cyanase from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TlCyn); both TlCyn and SazCA were purified by one-step heating without prior cell lysis. The heat treatment resulted in higher activities of both enzymes than the conventional two-step process. From a 50 mL-culture, the highest total activity of 147 U and 47,174 WAU was obtained from 5 min of heating at 60 and 80 °C for TlCyn and SazCA, respectively. The coupled enzymatic system was used to degrade cyanate in three different matrices: 50 mM Tris-HCl (pH 8), industrial wastewater, and artificial wastewater. In the industrial wastewater, with the addition of 0.75 WAU (Wilbur-Anderson unit) of SazCA, cyanate degradation using 0.5 mM NaHCO3 was similar to that using 3 mM NaHCO3, indicating an 83% reduction in NaHCO3. We have demonstrated that the dependence on HCO3− of cyanate degradation can be effectively alleviated by using low-cost heat-purified TlCyn and SazCA; the industrial practicality of the coupled enzymatic system is therefore improved. Olefin epoxidation is an important transformation for the chemical valorization of olefins, which may derive from renewable sources or domestic/industrial waste. Different post-synthesis strategies were employed to introduce molybdenum species into mesostructured and hierarchical micro-mesoporous catalysts of the type TUD-1 and BEA, respectively, to confer epoxidation activity for the conversion of relatively bulky olefins (e.g., biobased methyl oleate, DL-limonene) to epoxide products, using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant. The influences of (i) the type of metal precursor, (ii) type of post-synthesis impregnation method, (iii) type of support and (iv) top-down versus bottom-up synthesis methodologies were studied to achieve superior catalytic performances. Higher epoxidation activity was achieved for a material prepared via (post-synthesis) incipient wetness impregnation of MoO2(acac)2 (acac = acetylacetonate) on (pre-treated) siliceous TUD-1 and calcination; for example, methyl oleate was converted to the corresponding epoxide with 100% selectivity at 89% conversion (70 °C). The homogeneous photocatalytic degradation of model pesticide clopyralid (CLPR) has been investigated under various experimental setups. Lab-scale experiments under UV-A radiation in an acidic environment showed that the degradation rate generally increased when increasing either Fe3+ or H2O2 concentration up to a point beyond which (i.e., 100 mg L−1 for peroxide or 7 mg L−1 for ferric ions) Fenton reagents had little or even detrimental effect on degradation. Thus, there is an optimum concentration of Fenton reagents for maximizing treatment performance, beyond which degradation rates are not enhanced. Excessive concentrations of peroxide and/or catalyst may (i) introduce unnecessary treatment costs, (ii) reduce performance due to scavenging effects, and (iii) raise environmental concerns associated with the disposal of, e.g., high concentrations of iron in the receiving water courses. Switching from UV-A to visible light led to similar rates of degradation, i.e., 86% and 82.2%, respectively, after 90 min of reaction, highlighting the potential of using renewable energy, i.e., natural sunlight, to drive the process. Treatment for 120 min also led to 90% mineralization and quantitative release of nitrogen originally present in the pesticide; this was also accompanied by complete elimination of eco-toxicity to Vibrio fischeri. Pilot-scale experiments were performed in a fountain-type reactor using a commercial pesticide formulation containing CLPR. Both the degradation and mineralization rates increased with increasing the intensity of the incident UV-A radiation from 1.88 to 4.03 mW cm−2. Experiments were also conducted with different liquid volumes, i.e., from 3 to 8 L. Illumination of 5 L wastewater resulted in 80% mineralization after 60 min and this only slightly decreased to 73% at 8 L. The present work explored the adsorptive capacity and catalytic activity of rock powders from basaltic and granitic rocks in the discoloration of synthetic and industrial effluents containing the yellow dye Basic Yellow 96. The rock powders were characterized with scanning electron microscopy associated with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, photoacoustic spectroscopy, N2 physisorption and X-ray diffraction, the latter confirming the abundant presence of silica in the four materials studied. The basaltic powders presented specific surface areas between 7 and 10 times greater than those of granitic materials, which allowed up to 92% removal of the dye in 3 h of test using the basaltic powder. Despite the smaller area, the granitic materials showed considerable photocatalytic activity in 3 h, 94%, the same as that of the basaltic materials in the photocatalysis. Granitic and basaltic photocatalysts proved to be efficient in the discoloration of synthetic and industrial effluents, although TOC analyses indicated that it was not possible to promote the pollutant mineralization in the industrial effluent. Metallic glasses (MGs) with a unique atomic structure have been widely used in the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants in the recent years. Fe78Si9B13 MGs exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the degradation of oily wastewater in a Fenton-like system for the first time. The oil removal and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from the oily wastewater were 72.67% and 70.18% within 60 min, respectively. Quenching experiments were performed to verify the production of active hydroxyl radicals (·OH) by activating hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The formation of ·OH species can significantly contribute to the degradation reaction of oily wastewater. Fe78Si9B13 MG ribbons were highly efficient materials that exhibited superior reactivity towards H2O2 activation in oily wastewater treatment. Low-temperature plasma (LTP) technology has been successfully used to treat persistent organic pollutants in water. Efforts have been devoted to combine catalysts and LTP to improve the degradation efficiency of pollutants and energy utilization efficiency. Herein, industrial solid waste red mud as a novel catalyst was added to an LTP system to treat crystalline violet (CV) wastewater. The energy yield at 50% CV decomposition and TOC after a 30 min reaction by the plasma treatment, red mud adsorption, and red mud/plasma treatment were compared. The effects of the main operating parameters, such as red mud dosing amount, initial pH, discharge voltage, and initial concentration of CV, on the removal efficiency of CV were investigated. The best degradation of CV was achieved with a red mud dosage of 2 g, a neutral environment, and a discharge voltage of 22 kV. When the red mud was recycled three times, the removal efficiency decreased a little in the red mud/plasma system. Hydroxyl radical plays an important role in the treatment of CV. The red mud was characterized by BET, SEM, XRD, and FT-IR, and the structure of the red mud was not greatly affected after being used in the red mud/plasma system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to put forward an efficient and eco-friendly approach to degrade dye-containing industrial effluents, an n-Fe3O4/ACF nanocomposite was synthesized using the facile precipitation method and applied as a functional cathode for a heterogeneous electro-Fenton (E-Fenton) process. In particular, optimal initial pH value, current density, pole plate spacing, and electrode area were confirmed through systematical experiments as 5.73, 30 mA/cm2, 3 cm, and 2 × 2 cm2, respectively. Under such optimal reaction conditions, 98% of the methylene blue (MB) was degraded by n-Fe3O4/ACF after 2 h of E-Fenton treatment. In addition, n-Fe3O4/ACF could still decolor about 90% of the methylene blue (MB) for five rounds with some reductions in efficiency. Furthermore, results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and heterogeneous E-Fenton performance tests indicated that the loading of metal material Fe3O4 could enhance the overall electron transport capacity, which could accelerate the whole degradation processes. Moreover, the rich pores and large specific surface area of n-Fe3O4/ACF provided many active sites, which could greatly improve the efficiency of O2 reduction, promote the generation of H2O2, and shorten the reaction length between •OH and the pollutant groups. Over the past few decades, enzyme-based green and sustainable chemistry has attracted extensive research attention, which provides a promising alternative to the conventional treatment methods of recalcitrant micropollutants. However, enzyme denaturation and stability loss remain critical challenges for its potential applications in industrial wastewater treatment. In this study, laccase from Trametes versicolor (laccase T.) was cross-linked immobilized by ultraporous alumina (UPA) for the sustainable biodegradation of Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR). Through sequential use of an aminosilane coupling agent (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and bifunctional cross-linker glutaraldehyde (GA), the synthesized biocatalysts showed better immobilization performances (about 4-fold to physical adsorption). The GA concentration considerably affected the laccase T. cross-linking degree, while the GA post-treatment protocol showed the highest laccase T. immobilization yield with lower activity recovery. Moreover, the biocatalyst stabilities including pH stability, thermal stability, storage stability, and reusability were also studied. Tolerance to broader pH and temperature ranges, better storage stability, good reusability of laccase T. cross-linked UPA(γ) biocatalysts, and their continuous RBRR biodegradation efficiency highlight the potentials of enzyme-based inorganic materials in industrial wastewater treatment, which can broaden our understanding of their practical applications in environmental fields. Natural bearing (raw and calcined at 500 °C) and iron-enriched (impregnation and pillaring) montmorillonitic clay samples were prepared. The obtained samples were characterized (X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and evaluated as catalysts in catalytic wet oxidation of Brilliant Green and Crystal Violet. Experiments were conducted in the same conditions (0.5 g catalysts, 300 mL air/min or 0.5 mL H2O2, 25 mL of dye solution, 25 °C, initial solution pH = 6.0, for 3 h) in thermostated batch reaction tubes. Process evolution was followed using UV-Vis spectrometry (200–1100 cm−1) and total organic carbon. Dye removal efficiencies (decolorization) between 98 and 99% were determined, while total organic carbon removal efficiencies were calculated to be in the 53–98% range. Two-dimensional compounds with nanostructural features are attracting attention from researchers worldwide. Their multitude of applications in various fields and vast potential for future technology advancements are successively increasing the research progress. Wastewater treatment and preventing dangerous substances from entering the environment have become important aspects due to the increasing environmental awareness, and increasing consumer demands have resulted in the appearance of new, often nonbiodegradable compounds. In this review, we focus on using the most promising 2D materials, such as MXenes, Bi2WO6, and MOFs, as catalysts in the modification of the Fenton process to degrade nonbiodegradable compounds. We analyze the efficiency of the process, its toxicity, previous environmental applications, and the stability and reusability of the catalyst. We also discuss the catalyst's mechanisms of action. Methylene blue is a toxic dye that is extensively used as a colorant in textile industries. Industrial effluent containing methylene blue, when drained into water bodies without proper treatment, poses a serious threat to aquatic and human lives. In order to protect the biocycle, various methods have been established to detect and remove hazardous dyes from aqueous systems. Electrochemical methods are preferred, owing to their characteristic features of simplicity, portability, potential selectivity, cost effectiveness, and rapid responsiveness. Based on these considerations, an electrochemical sensor consisting of amino-group-functionalized, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH2-fMWCNTs) immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was developed for the sensitive detection of methylene blue in aqueous solutions. The performance of the designed sensor was analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and square wave voltammetry. The developed sensing tool demonstrated promising features of sensitivity, selectivity, stability, fast responsiveness, and the ability to work with a very small volume of the analyte, i.e., in microliters, for analysis. Amino groups rich in electrons provide a negative charge to multi-walled carbon nanotubes, which significantly enhances the electrocatalytic activity of NH2-fMWCNTs for cationic dyes such as methylene blue. Using the designed sensing platform, a linear calibration plot with a limit of detection of 0.21 nM was obtained for methylene blue under optimized conditions. The designed sensor was also employed to monitor the extent and kinetics of the degradation of methylene blue. Titania nanoparticles were used for photocatalytic degradation, and the kinetics of degradation was monitored by both UV-Visible spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), a hydroxylated aromatic compound (HAC), is a recalcitrant and toxic organic pollutant found in industrial wastewater and various environmental media. In this paper, visible-light-activated photocatalysis using graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) was used to treat 4-CP in an aqueous media. Graphitic carbon nitride from different precursors (dicyanamide, urea, and melamine), as well as GCN/silver nanocomposites (AgBr, Ag3PO4, Ag2CrO4, and Ag), were successfully synthesized and characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, EDS, and UV-Vis DRS. The band gaps of the photocatalysts were estimated using the UV-Vis DRS characterization results and Tauc plots. The evaluation of the efficacy of the GCN-based catalysts in degrading 4-CP was conducted with different photoreactors such as a royal blue light-emitting diode (LED), a UV-A LED, LUZCHEM cool white lamps, and a solar simulator. The results showed that GCNs with royal blue LED can effectively degrade 4-CP from aqueous media. Among the different precursors, urea-derived GCN showed the best performance in degrading 4-CP due to its large surface area. GCN/0.3Ag2CrO4 nanocomposite showed a synergistic effect for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of 4-CP. The degradation of 4-CP with a rate constant of 2.64 × 10−2 min−1 was achieved with a GCN/0.3Ag2CrO4 nanocomposite under royal blue LED irradiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of the study on the development of a methodology for the production of pure amorphous silicon dioxide containing up to 99.8 wt.% of SiO2. As a starting material, a silica gel with a moisture content of up to 55 wt.% and an SiO2/AlF3 ratio of 4 was used. The silica gel was purified using alkaline and acidic solutions in concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 25 wt.%. The analysis of the experimental data allowed to identify the most suitable purification parameters of the starting material. The initial silica gel and the reaction products were studied using the methods of X-ray fluorescence, X-ray phase analysis, electron scanning microscopy, EDS microanalysis, and particle-size analysis. Amorphous silicon dioxide obtained according to the methodology developed by the authors forms agglomerates of spherical silicon dioxide particles up to 1 μm in size. Amorphous silicon dioxide was involved in the preparation of catalyst supports in order to consider the possibility of replacing part of the expensive raw material in the form of aluminum hydroxide. Over the past few decades, the synthesis and potential applications of nanocatalysts have received great attention from the scientific community. Many well-established methods are extensively utilized for the synthesis of nanocatalysts. However, most conventional physical and chemical methods have some drawbacks, such as the toxicity of precursor materials, the requirement of high-temperature environments, and the high cost of synthesis, which ultimately hinder their fruitful applications in various fields. Bioinspired synthesis is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and requires a low energy/temperature ambient. Various microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae are used as nano-factories and can provide a novel method for the synthesis of different types of nanocatalysts. The synthesized nanocatalysts can be further utilized in various applications such as the removal of heavy metals, treatment of industrial effluents, fabrication of materials with unique properties, biomedical, and biosensors. This review focuses on the biogenic synthesis of nanocatalysts from various green sources that have been adopted in the past two decades, and their potential applications in different areas. The use of nano-photocatalysts for the water/wastewater purifications, particularly in developing regions, offers promising advantages over conventional technologies. TiO2-based photocatalysts deposited on fabrics represent an efficient solution for obtaining heterogeneous photocatalysts, which are easily adaptable in the already installed water treatment plants or air purification systems. Despite the huge effort spent to develop and characterize novel nano-photocatalysts, which are especially active under solar light, knowledge gaps still persist for their full-scale application, starting from the reactor design and scale-up and the evaluation of the photocatalytic efficiency in pre-pilot scenarios. In this study, we offered easily scalable solutions for adapting TiO2-based photocatalysts, which are deposited on different kinds of fabrics and implemented in a 6 L semi-pilot plant, using the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) as a model of water pollution. We took advantage of a multi-variable optimization approach to identify the best design options in terms of photodegradation efficiency and turnover frequency (TOF). Surprisingly, in the condition of use, the irradiation with a light-emitting diode (LED) visible lamp appeared as a valid alternative to the use of UV LED. The identification of the best design options in the semi-pilot plant allowed scaling up the technology in a 100 L pilot plant suitable for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Industries such as mining, cokemaking, (petro)chemical and electroplating produce effluents that contain free cyanide (fCN = HCN + CN−). Currently, fCN is mainly removed by (physico)chemical methods or by biotreatment with activated sludge. Cyanide hydratases (CynHs) (EC 4.2.1.66), which convert fCN to the much less toxic formamide, have been considered for a mild approach to wastewater decyanation. However, few data are available to evaluate the application potential of CynHs. In this study, we used a new CynH from Exidia glandulosa (protein KZV92691.1 designated NitEg by us), which was overproduced in Escherichia coli. The purified NitEg was highly active for fCN with 784 U/mg protein, kcat 927/s and kcat/KM 42/s/mM. It exhibited optimal activities at pH approximately 6–9 and 40–45 °C. It was quite stable in this pH range, and retained approximately 40% activity at 37 °C after 1 day. Silver and copper ions (1 mM) decreased its activity by 30–40%. The removal of 98–100% fCN was achieved for 0.6–100 mM fCN. Moreover, thiocyanate, sulfide, ammonia or phenol added in amounts typical of industrial effluents did not significantly reduce the fCN conversion, while electroplating effluents may need to be diluted due to high fCN and metal content. Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)) has long been known to be highly mobile and toxic when compared with the other stable oxidation state, Cr(III). Cr(VI)-soluble environmental pollutants have been detected in soils and water bodies receiving industrial and agricultural waste. The reduction of Cr(VI) by microbial organisms is considered to be an environmentally compatible, less expensive and sustainable remediation alternative when compared to conventional treatment methods, such as chemical neutralization and chemical precipitation of Cr. This study aims to isolate and identify the composition of the microbial consortium culture isolated from waste activated sludge and digested sludge from a local wastewater treatment plant receiving high loads of Cr(VI) from an abandoned chrome foundry in Brits (North Waste Province, South Africa). Furthermore, the Cr(VI) reduction capability and efficiency by the isolated bacteria were investigated under a range of operational conditions, i.e., pH, temperature and Cr(VI) loading. The culture showed great efficiency in reduction capability, with 100% removal in less than 4 h at a nominal loading concentration of 50 mg Cr(VI)/L. The culture showed resilience by achieving total removal at concentrations as high as 400 mg Cr(VI)/L. The consortia exhibited considerable Cr(VI) removal efficiency in the pH range from 2 to 11, with 100% removal being achieved at a pH value of 7 at a 37 ± 1 °C incubation temperature. The time course reduction data fitted well on both first and second-order exponential rate equation yielding first-order rate constants in the range 0.615 to 0.011 h−1 and second order rate constants 0.0532 to 5 × 10−5 L·mg−1·h−1 for Cr(VI) concentration of 50–400 mg/L. This study demonstrated the bacterial consortium from municipal wastewater sludge has a high tolerance and reduction ability over a wide range of experimental conditions. This work studied the removal of phenol from industrial effluents through catalytic ozonation in the presence of granular activated carbon in a continuous fixed-bed reactor. Phenol was chosen as model pollutant because of its environmental impact and high toxicity. Based on the evolution of total organic carbon (TOC) and phenol concentration, a kinetic model was proposed to study the effect of the operational variables on the combined adsorption–oxidation (Ad/Ox) process. The proposed three-phase model expressed the oxidation phenomena in the liquid and the adsorption and oxidation on the surface of the granular activated carbon in the form of two kinetic constants, k1 and k2 respectively. The interpretation of the constants allow to study the benefits and behaviour of the use of activated carbon during the ozonisation process under different conditions affecting adsorption, oxidation, and mass transfer. Additionally, the calculated kinetic parameters helped to explain the observed changes in treatment efficiency. The results showed that phenol would be completely removed at an effective contact time of 3.71 min, operating at an alkaline pH of 11.0 and an ozone gas concentration of 19.0 mg L−1. This work is devoted to the investigation of the discoloration of the synthetic and industrial effluent, using a quarry residue (MbP), which is a material naturally composed of mixed oxides, compared to zinc oxide (ZnO), acting as photocatalysts and adsorbents. The optimization of the pH and catalyst concentration parameters was carried out, and the industrial effluent was then treated by photocatalytic reactions, adsorption, and photolysis. Industrial effluent was supplied by a packaging company and was collected for a period of seven consecutive days, showing the oscillation of the parameters in the process. The material characterizations were obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). The results indicated that the composition of the quarry waste is mainly silica and has Egap 2.16 eV. The quarry residue as photocatalyst was active for the artificial effluent (synthetic dye solution), with a maximum of 98% discoloration, and as an adsorbent for industrial effluent, with a maximum of 57% of discoloration. Although the quarry residue has shown results lower than ZnO, it is considered a promising material in adsorption processes and photocatalytic reactions for discoloration of aqueous solutions. The petroleum industry is one of the most rapidly developing industries and is projected to grow faster in the coming years. The recent environmental activities and global requirements for cleaner methods are pushing the petroleum refining industries for the use of green techniques and industrial wastewater treatment. Petroleum industry wastewater contains a broad diversity of contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons, oil and grease, phenol, ammonia, sulfides, and other organic composites, etc. All of these compounds within discharged water from the petroleum industry exist in an extremely complicated form, which is unsafe for the environment. Conventional treatment systems treating refinery wastewater have shown major drawbacks including low efficiency, high capital and operating cost, and sensitivity to low biodegradability and toxicity. The advanced oxidation process (AOP) method is one of the methods applied for petroleum refinery wastewater treatment. The objective of this work is to review the current application of AOP technologies in the treatment of petroleum industry wastewater. The petroleum wastewater treatment using AOP methods includes Fenton and photo-Fenton, H2O2/UV, photocatalysis, ozonation, and biological processes. This review reports that the treatment efficiencies strongly depend on the chosen AOP type, the physical and chemical properties of target contaminants, and the operating conditions. It is reported that other mechanisms, as well as hydroxyl radical oxidation, might occur throughout the AOP treatment and donate to the decrease in target contaminants. Mainly, the recent advances in the AOP treatment of petroleum wastewater are discussed. Moreover, the review identifies scientific literature on knowledge gaps, and future research ways are provided to assess the effects of these technologies in the treatment of petroleum wastewater. Effective La-doped SrTiO3 (Sr1−xLaxTiO3, x = 0–0.1 mol.% La-doped) nanocubes were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The influence of different La dopant concentrations on the physicochemical properties of the host structure of SrTiO3 was fully characterized. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the Sr2+ in the crystal lattice of SrTiO3 was substituted by La3+. As a result, the absorption region of the Sr1−xLaxTiO3 could be extended to visible light. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirmed that their morphologies are associated with an increased surface area and an increased La-doping concentration. The decrease in the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of the dopant samples showed more defect levels created by the dopant La+3 cations in the SrTiO3 structure. The photocatalytic activities of Sr1−xLaxTiO3 were evaluated with regard to the degradation of 2-naphthol at typical conditions under artificial solar light. Among the candidates, Sr0.95La0.05TiO3 exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance for the degradation of 2-naphthol, which reached 92% degradation efficiency, corresponding to a 0.0196 min−1 degradation rate constant, within 180 minutes of irradiation. Manipulating the structure of Sr1−xLaxTiO3 nanocubes could produce a more effective and stable degradation efficiency than their parent compound, SrTiO3. The parameters remarkably influence the Sr1−xLaxTiO3 nanocubes' structure, and their degradation efficiencies were also studied. Palm oil mill effluent (POME), wastewater discharged from the palm oil refinery industry, is classified as an environmental pollutant. In this work, a heterogeneous catalytic process for biojet fuel or green kerosene production was investigated. The enzymatic hydrolysis of POME was firstly performed in order to obtain hydrolysed POME (HPOME) rich in free fatty acid (FFA) content. The variations of the water content (30 to 50), temperature (30 to 60 °C) and agitation speed (150 to 250 rpm) were evaluated. The optimal condition for the POME hydrolysis reaction was obtained at a 50% v/v water content, 40 °C and 200 rpm. The highest FFA yield (Y FA) of 90% was obtained. Subsequently, FFA in HPOME was converted into hydrocarbon fuels via a hydrocracking reaction catalysed by Pd/Al2O3 at 400 °C, 10 bars H2 for 1 h under a high pressure autoclave reactor (HPAR). The refined-biofuel yield (94%) and the biojet selectivity (57.44%) were achieved. In this study, we are the first group to successfully demonstrate the POME waste valorisation towards renewable biojet fuel production based on biochemical and thermochemical routes. The process can be applied for the sustainable management of POME waste. It promises to be a high value-added product parallel to the alleviation of wastewater environmental issues. Background: There is a need for more effective methods of industrial wastewater treatment. Methods: Cosmetic wastewater was collected and subjected to H2O2/Fe3O4/Fe2O3/Fe0 and UV/H2O2/Fe3O4/Fe2O3/Fe0 process treatment. Results: Total organic carbon (TOC) was decreased from an initial 306.3 to 134.1 mg/L, 56.2% TOC removal, after 120 min of treatment for 1:1 H2O2/COD mass ratio and 500/500/1000 mg/L Fe3O4/Fe2O3/Fe0 catalyst doses. The application chromatographic analysis allowed for the detection and identification of pollutants present in the wastewater. Identified pollutants were removed during the treatment processes. Processes carried out at a pH greater than 3.0 were ineffective. The UV process was more effective than the lightless process. Conclusions: The applied processes are effective methods for wastewater treatment. Chromatographic results confirmed the effectiveness of the treatment method. The kinetics of the process were described by the modified second-order model. On the basis of ANOVA results, the hypothesis regarding the accuracy and reproducibility of the research was confirmed. The direct discharge of industrial wastewater into the environment results in serious contamination. Photocatalytic treatment with the application of sunlight and its enhancement by coupling with electrocatalytic degradation offers an inexpensive and green technology enabling the total removal of refractory pollutants such as surfactants, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, textile dyes, and heavy metals, from industrial wastewater. Among metal oxide—semiconductors, cerium dioxide (CeO2) is one of the photocatalysts most commonly applied in pollutant degradation. CeO2 exhibits promising photocatalytic activity. Nonetheless, the position of conduction bands (CB) and valence bands (VB) in CeO2 limits its application as an efficient photocatalyst utilizing solar energy. Its photocatalytic activity in wastewater treatment can be improved by various modification techniques, including changes in morphology, doping with metal cation dopants and non-metal dopants, coupling with other semiconductors, and combining it with carbon supporting materials. This paper presents a general overview of CeO2 application as a single or composite photocatalyst in the treatment of various pollutants. The photocatalytic characteristics of CeO2 and its composites are described. The main photocatalytic reactions with the participation of CeO2 under UV and VIS irradiation are presented. This review summarizes the existing knowledge, with a particular focus on the main experimental conditions employed in the photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic degradation of various pollutants with the application of CeO2 as a single and composite photocatalyst. Metallic wastes from the metal-mechanic industry represent a serious environmental problem. The possible strategies to reduce the metal content of these industrial wastes is their biotreatment by means of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, such as Acidithioobacillus thiooxidans DSM 26636, which has been reported as an excellent metal-leaching microorganism by its capability to oxide sublimed sulfur and produce sulfuric acid in the presence of metallic burrs, and leach metals. The metallic composition of burrs was determined by ICP-OES before and after its exposure to biological treatment. The bioleaching process was kept for 21 days at 30 °C at an orbital shaking of 150 rev/min by using Erlenmeyer flasks of 125 mL containing 30 mL of Starkey-modified media added with 0.33 g (1% w/v) of sublimed sulfur and 0.33 g (1% w/v) of metal burrs, and 3 mL of inoculum at logarithmic phase. Results showed that A. thiooxidans was able to grow at these conditions with a maximum sulfate production of 11,028 mg/L, sulfuric acid corresponded to 0.16 M, but no statistical difference was observed for days 14 and 21. A reduction in pH was observed from 2.5 to 1.3 units. Metal bioleaching in mg/kg corresponded Fe (4658.5 ± 291), Cr (237 ± 46), Al (185 ± 12), Si (71 ± 10.3), Mo (63 ± 3.6), Mn (46 ± 3.3), V (18 ± 0.94), Mg (22.2 ± 3.7), Ni (15.8 ± 1.5), and Cu (5.7 ± 1.9). Results showed that A. thiooxidans DSM 26636 was able to grow in the presence of metal-containing wastes, and although metal removal was feasible, more studies are needed to enhance metal removal. Geopolymers are ecologically-friendly inorganic materials which can be produced at low temperatures from industrial wastes such as fly ash, blast furnace slags or mining residues. Although to date their principal applications have been seen as alternatives to Portland cement building materials, their properties make them suitable for a number of more advanced applications, including as photocatalytic nanocomposites for removal of hazardous pollutants from waste water or the atmosphere. For this purpose, they can be combined with photocatalytic moieties such as metal oxides with suitable bandgaps to couple with UV or visible radiation, or with carbon nanotubes or graphene. In these composites the geopolymers act as supports for the photoactive components, but geopolymers formed from wastes containing oxides such as Fe2O3 show intrinsic photoactive behaviour. This review discusses the structure and formation chemistry of geopolymers and the principles required for their utilisation as photocatalysts. The literature on existing photocatalytic geopolymers is reviewed, suggesting that these materials have a promising potential as inexpensive, efficient and ecologically-friendly candidates for the remediation of toxic environmental pollutants and would repay further development. In recent years, the impending necessity to improve the quality of outdoor and indoor air has produced a constant increase of investigations in the methodologies to remove and/or to decrease the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Among the various strategies for VOC elimination, catalytic oxidation and recently photocatalytic oxidation are regarded as some of the most promising technologies for VOC total oxidation from urban and industrial waste streams. This work is focused on bimetallic supported catalysts, investigating systematically the progress and developments in the design of these materials. In particular, we highlight their advantages compared to those of their monometallic counterparts in terms of catalytic performance and physicochemical properties (catalytic stability and reusability). The formation of a synergistic effect between the two metals is the key feature of these particular catalysts. This review examines the state-of-the-art of a peculiar sector (the bimetallic systems) belonging to a wide area (i.e., the several catalysts used for VOC removal) with the aim to contribute to further increase the knowledge of the catalytic materials for VOC removal, stressing the promising potential applications of the bimetallic catalysts in the air purification. The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides alongside the expansion of large-scale industries globally can critically jeopardize marine ecology and the well-being of mankind. This is because the agricultural runoffs and industrial effluents eventually enter waterways before flowing into highly saline environments i.e., oceans. Herein, the study assessed two novel bacterial isolates, Bacillus subtilis strain H1 and Bacillus thuringiensis strain H2 from the hypersaline Lake Tuz in Turkey to degrade recalcitrant haloalkanoic acids, haloacetates and chlorpyrifos, and consequently, identify their optimal pollutant concentrations, pH and temperature alongside salt-tolerance thresholds. Bacillus strains H1 and H2 optimally degraded 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (2,2-DCP) under similar incubation conditions (pH 8.0, 30 °C), except the latter preferred a higher concentration of pollutants as well as salinity at 30 mM and 35%, respectively, while strain H1 grew well on 20 mM at <30%. While both isolates could degrade all substrates used, the dehalogenase gene from strain H1 could not be amplified. Capacity of the H2 bacterial isolate to degrade 2,2-DCP was affirmed by the detection of the 795 bp putative halotolerant dehalogenase gene after a successful polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. Hence, the findings envisage the potential of both isolates as bio-degraders of recalcitrant halogenated compounds and those of the same chemical family as chlorpyrifos, in saline environments. The application of Fenton-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as photo-Fenton or electro-Fenton for wastewater treatment have been extensively studied in recent decades due to its high efficiency for the decomposition of persistent organic pollutants. Usually Fenton-based AOPs are used for the degradation of targeted pollutant or group of pollutants, which often leads to the formation of toxic by-products possessing a potential environmental risk. In this work, we have collected and reviewed recent findings regarding the feasibility of Fenton-based AOPs (photo-Fenton, UVC/H2O2, electro-Fenton and galvanic Fenton) for the detoxification of real municipal and industrial wastewaters. More specifically, operational conditions, relevance and suitability of different bioassays for the toxicity assessment of various wastewater types, cost estimation, all of which compose current challenges for the application of these AOPs for real wastewater detoxification are discussed. Industrial sources of environmental pollution generate huge amounts of industrial wastewater containing various recalcitrant organic and inorganic pollutants that are hazardous to the environment. On the other hand, industrial wastewater can be regarded as a prospective source of fresh water, energy, and valuable raw materials. Conventional sewage treatment systems are often not efficient enough for the complete degradation of pollutants and they are characterized by high energy consumption. Moreover, the chemical energy that is stored in the wastewater is wasted. A solution to these problems is an application of photoelectrocatalytic treatment methods, especially when they are coupled with energy generation. The paper presents a general overview of the semiconductor materials applied as photoelectrodes in the treatment of various pollutants. The fundamentals of photoelectrocatalytic reactions and the mechanism of pollutants treatment as well as parameters affecting the treatment process are presented. Examples of different semiconductor photoelectrodes that are applied in treatment processes are described in order to present the strengths and weaknesses of the photoelectrocatalytic treatment of industrial wastewater. A new hybrid photocatalytic membrane reactor that can easily be scaled-up was designed, assembled and used to test photocatalytic membranes developed using the sol–gel technique. Extremely high removals of total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, phenolic and volatile compounds were obtained when the hybrid photocatalytic membrane reactor was used to treat olive mill wastewaters. The submerged photocatalytic membrane reactor proposed and the modified membranes represent a step forward towards the development of new advanced treatment technology able to cope with several water and wastewater contaminants. A systematic study on the solar photocatalytic hydrogen production (photoreforming) performance of M/TiO2 (M = Au, Ag, Cu or Pt) using glucose as a model substrate, and further extended to lignocellulose hydrolysates and wastewaters, is herein presented. Three metal (M) co-catalyst loading methods were tested. Variation of the type of metal results in significantly dissimilar H2 production rates, albeit the loading method exerts an even greater effect in most cases. Deposition-precipitation (followed by hydrogenation) or photodeposition provided better results than classical impregnation (followed by calcination). Interestingly, copper as a co-catalyst performed satisfactorily as compared to Au, and slightly below Pt, thus representing a realistic inexpensive alternative to noble metals. Hydrolysates of either α-cellulose or rice husks, obtained under mild conditions (short thermal cycles at 160 °C), were rich in saccharides and thus suitable as feedstocks. Nonetheless, the presence of inhibiting byproducts hindered H2 production. A novel photocatalytic UV pre-treatment method was successful to initially remove the most recalcitrant portion of these minor products along with H2 production (17 µmol gcat−1 h−1 on Cu/TiO2). After a short UV step, simulated sunlight photoreforming was orders of magnitude more efficient than without the pre-treatment. Hydrogen production was also directly tested on two different wastewater streams, that is, a municipal influent and samples from operations in a fruit juice producing plant, with remarkable results obtained for the latter (up to 115 µmol gcat−1 h−1 using Au/TiO2). Textile industries produce copious amounts of colored wastewater some of which are toxic to humans and aquatic biota. This study investigates optimization of a bench-scale UV-C photocatalytic process using a TiO2 catalyst suspension for degradation of two textile dyes, Acid Blue 113 (AB 113) and Acid Red 88 (AR 88). From preliminary experiments, appropriate ranges for experimental factors including reaction time, solution pH, initial dye concentration and catalyst dose, were determined for each dye. Response surface methodology (RSM) using a cubic IV optimal design was then used to design the experiments and optimize the process. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to determine significance of experimental factors and their interactions. Results revealed that among the studied factors, solution pH and initial dye concentration had the strongest effects on degradation rates of AB 113 and AR 88, respectively. Least-squares cubic regression models were generated by step-wise elimination of non-significant (p-value > 0.05) terms from the proposed model. Under optimum treatment conditions, removal efficiencies reached 98.7% for AB 113 and 99.6% for AR 88. Kinetic studies showed that a first-order kinetic model could best describe degradation data for both dyes, with degradation rate constants of k1, AB 113 = 0.048 min−1 and k1, AR 88 = 0.059 min−1. With the increased demands of environmental protection, recycling/utilization of industrial byproducts has attracted much attention from both industry and academic communities. In this work, silicon carbide (SiC) was successfully synthesized from industrial waste silica fume (SF) during metallic silicon production. Following this, Ni nanoparticles with many defects were supported on the as-obtained SiC by conventional impregnation method. The results showed that defect-rich Ni nanoparticles were dispersed onto the surface of SiC. The as-obtained Ni/SF-SiC exhibited an enhanced metal-support interaction between Ni and SiC. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the H2 and CO adsorption energy on Ni vacancy (VNi) sites of Ni/SF-SiC were 1.84 and 4.88 eV, respectively. Finally, the Ni/SF-SiC performed high catalytic activity with CO conversion of 99.1% and CH4 selectivity of 85.7% at 350 °C, 0.1 MPa and a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 18,000 mL·g−1·h−1. This paper presents an overview of recent reports on photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) in organic synthesis as well as water and wastewater treatment. A brief introduction to slurry PMRs and the systems equipped with photocatalytic membranes (PMs) is given. The methods of PM production are also presented. Moreover, the process parameters affecting the performance of PMRs are characterized. The applications of PMRs in organic synthesis are discussed, including photocatalytic conversion of CO2, synthesis of KA oil by photocatalytic oxidation, conversion of acetophenone to phenylethanol, synthesis of vanillin and phenol, as well as hydrogen production. Furthermore, the configurations and applications of PMRs for removal of organic contaminants from model solutions, natural water and municipal or industrial wastewater are described. It was concluded that PMRs represent a promising green technology; however, before the application in industry, additional studies are still required. These should be aimed at improvement of process efficiency, mainly by development and application of visible light active photocatalysts and novel membranes resistant to the harsh conditions prevailing in these systems.
