This contribution is the result of a collective work of members of the RT24 network of the French Sociological Association (AFS) around the concepts proposed by C. Guillaumin. The latter have enabled us to analyze the articulation of social relations and the processes of minoritization at work in our various terrains. Our intention is to contextualize and question the conceptualization of the “majority/minoritized” relationship, by linking it to other concepts and theories, in order to make it operational. Our analysis is structured around three axes that complement one another: to show the symbolic forces of minoritization through the concept of “mental form”, to think about the possible autonomy of minorities in relation to the majority in their ways of self-defining, and to capture the interlocking processes of sexist and racist minoritization at work between racialized people. Echoing various controversies on gender and race that have arisen in the French political arena in recent years, minority knowledge has faced a new wave of strong resistance. By analyzing the rhetorical persistence of anti-minority discourse as well as its current specificities (opposition to the so-called “gender theory”, rejection of the category of race), the article shows the ongoing relevance of Colette Guillaumin’s ideas today in analyzing the rationale and stakes of this offensive. Throughout her work, Guillaumin has been engaged in reflecting on the oppositions raised by minority voices and has helped to forge the concepts targeted by the current attacks (minority, race, racization). This article studies the vocabulary of insults experienced in public spaces. Using textual analysis tools, he objective is to identify the repertoires and representations used to insult anonymous by-standers in public spaces. What repertoires are being used? What terms and representations are perceived as shocking? Are they the same or polarized according to the gender of the persons insulted? That of the authors? To answer these questions, we study the answers to an open-ended question about the terms of the most recent insult to which respondents were subjected in public spaces, as reported in the Cadre de vie et sécurité ('Living Environment and Safety') surveys conducted from 2008 to 2012. This article examines the sexist and racist motives behind the opposition on Twitter to the alleged dissemination of 'gender theory' in State schools. The analysis of 11,383 tweets published between October 5,2014 and July 17,2017 shows that the opposition to 'gender theory' crystallizes around a public figure constructed as abject: the Ministry of Education Najat Vallaud-Belkacem. Opposition to the alleged diffusion of 'gender theory', is fueled by the opposition to others educational developments, also attributed to the Minister of Education, such as the supposedly compulsory teaching of Arabic in State schools. In this process, the construction of the Minister as an object of hatred illustrates a fear of a 'threat to Western civilization'. The article concludes that social representations of race and gender which characterize the anti-gender movement have thus enabled the formation of a broad coalition of oppositions to 'gendertheory'. Starting from British and American studies on the social and historical construction of white identities and their articulation with systemic racism since the end of the 1980s, this article proposes to explore some of the theoretical venues that the concept of "whiteness" open for research. In particular, it proposes to focus on the forms and modalities of the consciousness of the dominant groups, in order to unravel the processes of racial subjectivization. Indeed, in spite of the scientific evidence contradicting racialist theories, race continues to play an important role in shaping subjectivities. Racism can thus be explored as "field for positive action", that is actively shaping and generating subjects. The challenge thus is to determine which practices of the self contribute to shape a white subject, in order to capture the forms of tacit assent to domination shown by those who benefit from it. Questioning the figure of the "feminist killjoy", this essay explores its negativity, as well as its promise of agency. By framing feminist thought as a critique of happiness, it suggests that the feminist subject should be understood as a "willful subject". The feminist willfulness is thus understood as the uncertain ground for a collective politics translating individual emotions, the pain or anger felt in the face of injustices. Furthermore, the figure of the willful feminist subject may help understand the ways by which, within feminist spaces, black women have been reduced to their anger and designated as the cause of divisions produced by racism.
