The article reports on the research conducted by Richard L. Phipps and Clark P. Baker of the U.S. Geological Survey on the significance of measuring soil moisture, rainfall, temperature and microchanges in different habitats in Arlington, Virginia. Researchers discovered that data gathering problem on habitats including hilltop and stream valley can be solved by using an automated system that records data on punched paper tape wherein it will then be transcribed to magnetic tape for high speed computer use. Such kind of technique is commonly employed in ecological and agricultural field studies.

The article presents a paper which considers the theoretical and empirical problems involved in the analysis of hominid dental evolution during the Pleistocene epoch. It discusses two trends in the evolution of hominid teeth and relates them to environmental factors. It also cites the complicating nature of human culture behavior and explains the reasons behind the reductions in the size of teeth and complexity of molar patterns. The author asserts that the illustrated teeth in the study demonstrates the adaptation of man on his cultural environment during the Pleistocene.

The article presents a paper which attempts to point out some of the possible connections between changes in archaeological and human paleontological remains from the Middle to Upper Paleolithic period. It offers information on the research about the early Würm of the Levant, and examines if the Late Mousterian's archaeological data suggest a shift in the adaptation of man to his environment. It is recommended that a change in hunting pattern had led to adaptive responses in tool manufacture and social grouping.

The first monarch citizen science program was launched in the 1950s and, since then, thousands of volunteers have made fundamental contributions to our accumulating knowledge of monarch biology. We quantified these efforts and the degree to which citizen science has contributed to monarch scholarship. We estimate that, in 2011, volunteers spent over 72,000 hours collecting data useful for monarch research. Of 503 monarch-focused research publications in which new results were presented from 1940 to 2014, 17% used citizen science data. We address persistent gaps in the use and coverage of these data and show that, despite a typical view of volunteers as mere data collectors for scientists, many citizens are deeply engaged in all aspects of monarch research and data use. Finally, we argue that monarchs provide a model system for understanding the impacts of citizen science on scholarship, public engagement, and conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experimental design is a fundamental skill for scientists, but it is often not explicitly taught in large introductory biology classes. We have designed two pencil-and-paper in-class activities to increase student understanding of experimental design: an analyze activity, in which students are asked to evaluate data, and a design activity, in which students are asked to propose a novel experiment. We found that students who completed the design activity but not the analyze activity performed significantly better on the Expanded Experimental Design Ability Tool (E-EDAT) than did students who attended a didactic lecture about experimental design. By using grounded theory on student responses on the in-class activities, we have identified a novel set of accurate and inaccurate conceptions focused on two aspects of experimental design: sample size and the repetition of experiments. These findings can be used to help guide science majors through mastering the fundamental skill of designing rigorous experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on the paper "Nectar Production, Composition, Energetics and Pollinator Attractiveness in Spring Flowers of Western New York," by Edward E. Southwick, Gerald M. Loper, and Steven E. Sadwick, to be published in the August 1981 issue of "American Journal of Botany." The paper informs that sugar constituents are the principal factors in attractiveness of flowers to pollinators. The nectar feeder has no interest in the transfer of germ cells of the plant, yet it is for this reason that plants produce nectar. Relative humidity is stated to be an important aspect of microclimate affecting nectar reward. It is stated that solar radiation impinging on the plant has obvious effects on rates of photosynthesis and needs to be correlated with nectar production.

The article presents information on the paper "More Evidence for Conifer Diversity in the Upper Triassic of North Carolina," by T. Delevoryas and R.C. Hope, to be published in the August 1981 issue of the "American Journal of Botany." The paper examines the coexistence of coniferous ovulate cones of an essentially modern appearance and cones with more primitive ovuliferous scales that had retained some evidence of the dwarf shoot origin. In new cones, the ovuliferous appendage is linear and unbranched. It is stated that the occurrence of this new cone in the same time and place as the Compsostrobus neotericus and Voltzia andrewsii emphasizes the diversity that existed among conifer ovulate cones during the late Triassic.
