The article reports on research which was conducted to characterize and perform a phylogenetic analysis of two outbreaks of a highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus isolated from diseased ostriches (Struthio camelus) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Researchers used swabs to obtain data from diseased birds. They found that their phylogenetic analysis revealed that the two viruses belonged to clade 2.2 sublineage II and clustered with the HPAIV H5N1 isolated from falcons and turkeys seen during 2007 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The article discusses a study which describes the pathological and microbiological findings in ostriches, Struthio camelus, with mycobacterioris due to infection with Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium complex. Information is provided on the methods used in the study. Results describe the histopathologic features of the tissue samples of lesions. The occurrence of avian tuberculosis and the implications of M. bovis in terms of zoonotic risk and transmission of infection are discussed.

The article focuses on a study which compared genetic data of South African avian influenza virus (AIV) strains isolated from wild birds, ducks and ostriches during active and passive surveillance from January 2007 to March 2009. The study included H6N8 and H9N2 strains in ostriches, H1N8 and H4N2 from Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegypticus), and H10N7 in farmed Pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domestica). The study also described the phylogenetic relationships between viruses in an effort to know the link between poultry and wild birds in AIV dissemination. Study authors found no genes associated with the Asian high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 lineages.

The article describes the case of a deceased 10-year-old male ostrich that was diagnosed with severe necrotizing enteritis and septicimia. Its diet, the owner claims, consisted of commercial pelleted ration for horses and alfalfa hay. Prior to its death, the ostrich exhibited inappatence for three weeks, regurgitation, and body tremors. Particular focus is given to organ changes detected through pathologic examination. Gram-negative bacteria was identified from each aerobic culture source.
