This study deals with the possibility of construction of a database on the braking friction coefficient for actual roads from the viewpoint of traffic safety, especially for automated driving, such as level 4 or higher. At these levels of automated driving, the controller needs to control the vehicle. However, the road surface condition, especially the road friction coefficient on wet roads and snowy or icy roads, changes greatly, and in some cases, changes by almost one order. Therefore, it is necessary for the controller to constantly collect environment information, such as the road friction coefficients, and prepare for emergencies, such as obstacle avoidance. However, at present, the measurement of the road friction coefficients is not systemically performed, and a method for accurately measuring has not been established. In order to improve this situation, this study examines a method for continuous measurement of the road friction characteristics, such as the μ-s characteristics. It is shown that the μ-s characteristics are continuously measured using the MF generally used in tire engineering, and the friction characteristics identified from the results are sufficiently satisfactory.

Trabecular meshwork (TM) motion abnormality is the leading cause of glaucoma. With technique limitations, how TM moves is still an enigma. This study describes a new laboratory platform to investigate TM motion responses to ocular transients in ex vivo eyes. The anterior segments of human cadaver and primate eyes were mounted in a perfusion system fitting. Perfusion needles were placed to establish mean baseline pressure. A perfusion pump was connected to the posterior chamber and generated an immediate transient pressure elevation. A phase-sensitive optical coherent tomography system imaged and quantified the TM motion. The peak-to-peak TM displacements (ppTMD) were determined, a tissue relaxation curve derived, and a time constant obtained. This study showed that the ppTMD increased with a rise in the pulse amplitude. The ppTMD was highest for the lowest mean pressure of 16 mmHg and decreased with mean pressure increase. The pulse frequency did not significantly change ppTMD. With a fixed pulse amplitude, an increase in mean pressure significantly reduced the time constant of recoil from maximum distension. Our research platform permitted quantitation of TM motion responses to designed pulse transients. Our findings may improve the interpretation of new TM motion measurements in clinic, aiding in understanding mechanisms and management.

A contemporary approach to the spatial design of healthcare care facilities faces numerous challenges at the crossroads of multidisciplinary topics of architecture and urbanism, healthcare, security, and organisational sciences. Due to the unique combination of uses, users and architectural expression, they are defined as urban nodes. With their inclusion, architects facilitate a better placing of healthcare facilities, indirectly improving human health. The purpose of the article is to seek guidelines for the siting of healthcare facilities to provide suitable and equal healthcare to different social structures, and for the optimal and fair spatial distribution of healthcare services. The descriptive method was used to review literature on the siting of healthcare facilities based on the purpose of their operation, demographic changes, environmental characteristics, and the impact on public health. This method was selected as it facilitates data acquisition from various sources and a comprehensive understanding of the topic discussed. The results of the research show how important the impact of the healthcare care facilities siting on human health and the wider social significance of the topic discussed is. The findings may provide guidelines and proposals for future spatial decisions.

Railway applications are in continuous evolution with the aim of offering a more efficient, sustainable, and safer transportation system for the users. Generally, these applications are constantly exchanging information between the systems onboard the train and the trackside through a wireless communication. Nowadays, Global System for Mobile communications-Railway (GSM-R) is the technology used by European Train Control System (ETCS), but it is becoming obsolete. Therefore, alternatives for this technology have to be found for the different railway applications. Its natural evolution is to move forward with the latest technology deployed: Long-Term Evolution (LTE), which the Public Land Mobile Networks (PLMN) have already deployed. Therefore, testing the performance of this communication technology in the railway environment could be useful to assess its suitability and reduce the cost of railway network dedicated deployment. In order to do that, a methodology to characterize the communication environment is proposed. The main goal is to measure geolocated impairments of any communication channel in a railway environment being able to determine its behavior of the different communication technologies and find out possible coverage issues. Moreover, it could help in the selection of suitable communication technology for railway. This paper presents a brief description of the communication for railways and its QoS parameters for performance measuring. Afterward, the testing methodology is described, and then, the communication channel measurement campaign on a real track in Spain where the railway environment is variable is presented (tunnels, rural/urban area…). Finally, the measurements and results on this real track in Spain are shown. The results provide suitability of the 4G technologies based on the delay requirements for the implementation of ETCS over it.

The airlift column is a promising technology for the removal of volatile gas from high-viscosity molten sulfur. However, a detailed analysis is lacking on the hydrodynamic properties inside the column, due to the difficulty in flow behavior detection in the opaque molten sulfur. In this work, we adopted the computational fluid dynamics simulation to understand the hydrodynamic behaviors in an airlift column for molten sulfur aeration. In addition, we analyzed the impacts of the superficial gas velocity (UGr) and column height on the hydrodynamic characteristics, such as gas holdup, average bubble diameter, and liquid circulation velocity (ULr) in the column. The simulation shows that at a constant column height of 15 m, an increase on gas holdup can be obtained with the increase of the superficial gas velocity, while the bubble diameter remains almost constant. Once the superficial gas velocity exceeded 0.333 m/s, the liquid circulation velocity increased slowly. With a variation on the column height from 5 to 25 m, a negligible change on gas holdup, but an obvious increase on liquid circulation velocity and bubble diameter is observed at the given superficial gas velocity of 0.0389 m/s. Furthermore, the simulation shows a similar trend, but with considerably more detailed information, on the relationship between the gas holdup and liquid circulation velocity when compared to the predictions from the Chisti correlation (1988) and an optimized correlation proposed in this work.

Health pods are new systems such as small spaces equipped with medical devices where users can measure several biomedical parameters related to their health status and receive other medical services. Their impact on health over a life course could be relevant in defining healthy aging strategies and/or management of chronic diseases and the early detection of possible symptoms related to some common pathologies. The generated data have not only a personal value but even at a community/society level. Health pods also support educational and empowerment actions to enable the 5P medicine approach, and specifically prevention, health promotion, and public health policymaking. This paper aims at defining their taxonomy, conducting a market and typologies survey, and discussing their potential impact in preventive medicine, presenting data of a pilot test carried out placing two health pods in a superstore environment to validate the demand and the participation of people in a prevention campaign. A 57-day period was observed at two sites: the number of free accesses and administered tests was impressive for size and completeness. The test revealed a good picture of the general health status of the population, with satisfying AGE values in the cardiovascular check and stress index through an HRV analysis. The body composition test revealed a small number of overweight subjects, more in males than in females. This pilot confirmed the huge demand for personalized services for improving well-being, health status, and quality of life and the relevance of these solutions for their individual and societal impact in preventive medicine.

Connectivity parameters have an important role in the study of communication networks. Wiener index is such a parameter with several applications in networking, facility location, cryptology, chemistry, and molecular biology, etc. In this paper, we show two notes related to the Wiener index of a fuzzy graph. First, we argue that Theorem 3.10 in the paper “Wiener index of a fuzzy graph and application to illegal immigration networks, Fuzzy Sets and Syst. 384 (2020) 132–147” is not correct. We give a correct statement of Theorem 3.10. Second, by using a new operator on matrix, we propose a simple and polynomial-time algorithm to compute the Wiener index of a fuzzy graph.

Purpose. This study evaluated whether 3D-based vision training (VT) with visual cortex-activated auditory frequency entrainment and bilateral orbital electrical stimulation (ES) could prevent the progression of myopia among schoolchildren. Methods. In this two-stage, randomized, crossover, single-blind study, pre- and post-logMAR visual acuity and refractive error from 27 schoolchildren with myopia (≤−0.50 D) were evaluated among four groups: (1) sham control with no VT, frequency following response (FFR), or ES (control group); (2) 3D-based VT only (VT group); (3) VT with FFR generated through visual cortex-activated auditory entrainment (VT-FFR group); and (4) VT with FFR and bilateral orbital ES (VT-FFR-ES group). In stage 1, the intervention was administered for 30 min to all groups using a randomized crossover design. In stage 2, the intervention was administered for 30 min/day, 3 days a week, for 4 weeks to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention. Results. Compared with the pre-test, post-test logMAR visual acuity after a single intervention was not significantly different in control and VT groups, but significantly improved in the VT-FFR (−0.08 ± 0.11) and VT-FFR-ES groups (−0.13 ± 0.14). The measurement accuracy of trace gas detection based on infrared absorption spectroscopy is influenced by the overlap of absorption lines. A method for correcting the interference of overlapping absorption lines using second harmonic spectral reconstruction (2f-SR) is proposed to improve the measurement accuracy. 2f-SR includes three parts: measurement of gas temperature and use of the differences in temperature characteristics of absorption lines to correct the temperature error, 2f signal restoration based on laser characteristics to eliminate the influence of waveform change on overlapping absorption lines, and fast multi-peak fitting for the separation of interference from overlapping absorption lines. The CH4 measurement accuracy based on overlapping absorption lines is better than 0.8% using 2f-SR. 2f-SR has a lower minimum detection limit (MDL) and a higher detection accuracy than the separation of overlapping absorption lines based on the direct absorption method. The MDL is reduced by two to three orders of magnitude and reaches the part per million by volume level. 2f-SR has clear advantages for correcting the interference of overlapping absorption lines in terms of both MDL and measurement accuracy.

Open-book question answering is a subset of question answering (QA) tasks where the system aims to find answers in a given set of documents (open-book) and common knowledge about a topic. This article proposes a solution for answering natural language questions from a corpus of Amazon Web Services (AWS) technical documents with no domain-specific labeled data (zero-shot). These questions have a yes–no–none answer and a text answer which can be short (a few words) or long (a few sentences). We present a two-step, retriever–extractor architecture in which a retriever finds the right documents and an extractor finds the answers in the retrieved documents. To test our solution, we are introducing a new dataset for open-book QA based on real customer questions on AWS technical documentation. In this paper, we conducted experiments on several information retrieval systems and extractive language models, attempting to find the yes–no–none answers and text answers in the same pass. Our custom-built extractor model is created from a pretrained language model and fine-tuned on the the Stanford Question Answering Dataset—SQuAD and Natural Questions datasets. We were able to achieve 42% F1 and 39% exact match score (EM) end-to-end with no domain-specific training.

In this paper, a new innovative technology for the treatment of returned concrete is proposed. This method is based on the application of physical–mechanical processes that allow to obtain new quality products: recycled aggregates, microfiltered water and cement sludge. Specifically, by means of a mechanical system equipped with buffer and Archimedes screws, fine (d < 5 mm) and coarse (d > 5 mm) aggregates are obtained. The water coming from the washing process is sent to a microfiltration process, where a filter membrane separates the liquid phase (microfiltered water) from the solid phase (cement sludge) and no type of potentially toxic additive is added. In this context, this paper investigates the feasibility of using all these components as new raw materials for sustainable concrete production. In particular, according to the requirements imposed by technical standards, an experimental program was developed, aimed at evaluating the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the analyzed materials. The results showed that both recycled aggregates, the microfiltered water and the cement sludge can be used to produce new structural concrete. In particular, it was proven that also the cement sludge, which generally represents the most critical component destined for disposal, can be reused as filler in the partial replacement of sand.

This study investigated whether interwoven self-expandable metallic stent (I-SEMS) placement suppresses stent-induced tissue hyperplasia compared with conventional knitted self-expandable metallic stent (K-SEMS) placement in a rat esophageal model. Twelve rats were randomly assigned to the I-SEMS (n = 6) and K-SEMS (n = 6) groups. All rats were sacrificed 4 weeks after the stent placement. The degree of stent-induced tissue hyperplasia on esophagography and histologic examination was compared between the groups. Stent placement was technically successful in all rats. Esophagography revealed significantly greater mean luminal diameter of the stented esophagus in the I-SEMS group than in the K-SEMS group (p < 0.001). Histologic examination revealed a significantly lower percentage of tissue hyperplasia area and a significantly thinner submucosal fibrosis in the I-SEMS group than in the K-SEMS group (all p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the thickness of the epithelial layers (p = 0.290) and degree of inflammatory cell infiltration (p = 0.506). Formation of stent-induced tissue hyperplasia was evident with both I-SEMS and K-SEMS. Placement of I-SEMSs with a small cell size and high flexibility seems to be effective in suppressing stent-induced tissue hyperplasia compared with placement of K-SEMSs in rat esophageal models.

This paper presents an investigation on the optimum design for a plate-fin heat exchanger (PFHE) of a gas and supercritical carbon dioxide combined cycle which uses thermal oil as intermediate heat-transfer fluid. This may promote the heat transfer from low heat-flux exhaust to a high heat-flux supercritical carbon dioxide stream. The number of fin layers, plate width and geometrical parameters of fins on both sides of PFHE are selected as variables to be optimized by a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II), which is a multi-objective genetic algorithm. For the confliction of heat transfer area and pressure drop on the exhaust side, which are the objective indexes, the result of NSGA-II is a Pareto frontier. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) approach is applied to choose the optimum solution from the Pareto frontier. Finally, further simulation is performed to analyze the effect of each parameter to objective indexes and confirm the rationality of optimization results.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) ankylosis represents a fairly common condition which surgeons need to face. According to Rowe, it can be defined as a restricted functional capacity of the jaw with limited movements owing to bony or fibrous adhesions between the condyle and either glenoid fossa, disc or eminence (or both). It can become a disease which impacts patients’ daily life, who suffer from limited mandibular excursion with reduced intercisal opening, anterior open bite, inability to swallow, sleep disorders, and speech problems. In children this may also result in abnormal mandibular and facial growth. In this paper, we deal with the case of a child with an important momolateral ankylosis, previously treated surgically with Costochondral Grafting arthroplasty without success and subsequently treated with a custom-made prosthesis.

Objectives: This study investigates the prevalence of Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis (SOS) and sella turcica morphometry (STM) association with different phenotype factors related to ectopic eye tooth/teeth (EET) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. Methods: This comparative retrospective study analyzed 252 CBCT images. Subjects in the EET group consisted of 197 CBCT images with the phenotype factor in number, i.e., unilateral (13, n = 62; 23, n = 59) or bilateral (1323, n = 76) and matched control (n = 55). SOS and STM were investigated using 3D OnDemand Software. Seven parameters of STM were measured. To test the association X2 used for SOS prevalence, disparities in STM were tested using ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test. Results: The prevalence of unfused SOS was 48.4% and 16.1% in the 1323 and control groups, respectively. Fused SOS prevalence was quite similar in all four groups. Phenotype factor in number, i.e., unilateral 13, 23, or bilateral EET group showed significant disparities in six out of seven parameters (p = 0.044 to p ≥ 0.001). Additionally, phenotype factor in position, i.e., occlusal, buccal, or palatal group showed insignificant disparities (p = 0.463 to p = 1.00). Conclusion: SOS in the ectopic eye tooth group (EETG) was prevalent in the 1323 and buccal position groups. Differing from previous two-dimensional (2D) studies, there were statistically significant disparities in all seven measured variables of STM among control, and three different phenotype factors in numbers were revealed using three-dimensional (3D) CBCT imaging.

The rapid development of industrialization and urbanization has had a substantial impact on the increasing air pollution in many populated cities around the globe. Intensive research has shown that ambient aerosols, especially the fine particulate matter PM2.5, are highly correlated with human respiratory diseases. It is critical to analyze, forecast, and mitigate PM2.5 concentrations. One of the typical meteorological phenomena seducing PM2.5 concentrations to accumulate is temperature inversion which forms a warm-air cap to blockade the surface pollutants from dissipating. This paper analyzes the meteorological patterns which coincide with temperature inversion and proposes two machine learning classifiers for temperature inversion classification. A separate multivariate regression model is trained for the class with or without manifesting temperature inversion phenomena, in order to improve PM2.5 forecasting performance. We chose Puli township as the studied site, which is a basin city easily trapping PM2.5 concentrations. The experimental results with the dataset spanning from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019 show that the proposed temperature inversion classifiers exhibit satisfactory performance in F1-Score, and the regression models trained from the classified datasets can significantly improve the PM2.5 concentration forecast as compared to the model using a single dataset without considering the temperature inversion factor.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) consumption has been growing in the last years, generating a large number of stalks (~10% of the berries bunch) that are still under-valorized. This study focused on the evaluation of elderberry stalks as a source of high-value phytochemicals. In this vein, the essential mineral content and lipophilic composition were analyzed for the first time. In addition, the polar fraction was evaluated regarding its total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity by both 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH) assays. The lipophilic fraction was mainly composed of triterpenic acids (2902.20 mg kg−1 of dry weight (dw)), fatty acids (711.73 mg kg−1 dw) and sterols (288.56 mg kg−1 dw). Minor amounts of long-chain aliphatic alcohols and other components were also detected. Ursolic acid (2265.83 mg kg−1 dw), hexadecanoic acid (219.85 mg kg−1 dw) and β-sitosterol (202.74 mg kg−1 dw) were the major lipophilic components verified. The results of this study also indicated that elderberry stalks might be used as a natural source of essential minerals, particularly calcium, iron and potassium, which are known to play important roles in various body functions. The analysis of the polar fraction also showed that elderberry stalks present TPC as high as elderberry themselves as well as considerable antioxidant activity (1.04 and 0.37 mmol TE g−1 of extract, against respectively ABTS and DPPH radicals). These results highlight the potential of elderberry stalks as a natural source of high-value phytochemicals that may be explored in several fields.

In recent years, the electric vehicles (EVs) power management strategy has been developed in order to reduce battery discharging power and fluctuation when an EV requires high and rapid discharging power due to frequent stop-and-go driving operations. A combination of lithium-ion battery and supercapacitor (SC) as the EV’s energy sources, known as a hybrid energy storage system (HESS), is a promising solution for fast discharging conditions. Effective power management to extensively utilize HESS can be developed if future power demand is accessible. A vehicular network as a typical form of the currently developed internet of things (IoT) has made future information obtainable by collecting information on surrounding data. This paper proposes a power management strategy for the HESS with the support of IoT. Since the obtained information from the vehicular network could not directly be used to improve HESS, a two-level control structure has been developed to perform future data prediction and power distribution. A fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is utilized in level one control structure to manage a HESS power split based on future information. Since FLC requires future information as a reference input, the future information is obtained by using an artificial neural network (ANN) in level two control structure. The ANN provides a direct prediction that could approximate the future power demand prediction with the assumption that the vehicular network scenario is deployed to obtain surrounding information. Simulation results demonstrate that the average discharging battery power and power variation are reduced by 46.1% and 52.3%, respectively, compared to the battery-only case.

Adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are prone to senescence, which limits the scope of their use in tissue engineering and regeneration and increases the likelihood of post-implantation failure. As a robust alternative cell source, fetal stem cells can prevent an immune reaction and senescence. However, few studies use this cell type. In this study, we sought to characterize fetal cells’ regenerative potential in hypoxic conditions. Specifically, we examined whether hypoxic exposure during the expansion and differentiation phases would affect human fetal nucleus pulposus cell (NPC) and fetal synovium-derived stem cell (SDSC) plasticity and three-lineage differentiation potential. We concluded that fetal NPCs represent the most promising cell source for chondrogenic differentiation, as they are more responsive and display stronger phenotypic stability, particularly when expanded and differentiated in hypoxic conditions. Fetal SDSCs have less potential for chondrogenic differentiation compared to their adult counterpart. This study also indicated that fetal SDSCs exhibit a discrepancy in adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation in response to hypoxia.

For safe autonomous driving, deep neural network (DNN)-based perception systems play essential roles, where a vast amount of driving images should be manually collected and labeled with ground truth (GT) for training and validation purposes. After observing the manual GT generation’s high cost and unavoidable human errors, this study presents an open-source automatic GT generation tool, CarFree, based on the Carla autonomous driving simulator. By that, we aim to democratize the daunting task of (in particular) object detection dataset generation, which was only possible by big companies or institutes due to its high cost. CarFree comprises (i) a data extraction client that automatically collects relevant information from the Carla simulator’s server and (ii) a post-processing software that produces precise 2D bounding boxes of vehicles and pedestrians on the gathered driving images. Our evaluation results show that CarFree can generate a considerable amount of realistic driving images along with their GTs in a reasonable time. Moreover, using the synthesized training images with artificially made unusual weather and lighting conditions, which are difficult to obtain in real-world driving scenarios, CarFree significantly improves the object detection accuracy in the real world, particularly in the case of harsh environments. With CarFree, we expect its users to generate a variety of object detection datasets in hassle-free ways.

The concept of “Industry 4.0” relies heavily on the utilization of collaborative robotic applications. As a result, the need for an effective, natural, and ergonomic interface arises, as more workers will be required to work with robots. Designing and implementing natural forms of human–robot interaction (HRI) is key to ensuring efficient and productive collaboration between humans and robots. This paper presents a gestural framework for controlling a collaborative robotic manipulator using pointing gestures. The core principle lies in the ability of the user to send the robot’s end effector to the location towards, which he points to by his hand. The main idea is derived from the concept of so-called “linear HRI”. The framework utilizes a collaborative robotic arm UR5e and the state-of-the-art human body tracking sensor Leap Motion. The user is not required to wear any equipment. The paper describes the overview of the framework’s core method and provides the necessary mathematical background. An experimental evaluation of the method is provided, and the main influencing factors are identified. A unique robotic collaborative workspace called Complex Collaborative HRI Workplace (COCOHRIP) was designed around the gestural framework to evaluate the method and provide the basis for the future development of HRI applications.

To know the processes involved in feeding, the dysregulation of hypothalamic neuropeptides promoting anorexigenic/orexigenic mechanisms must be investigated. Many neuropeptides are involved in this behavior and in overweight/obesity. Current pharmacological strategies for the treatment of obesity are unfortunately not very effective and, hence, new therapeutic strategies must be investigated and developed. Due to the crucial role played by orexins in feeding behavior, the aim of this review is to update the involvement of the orexinergic system in this behavior. The studies performed in experimental animal models and humans and the relationships between the orexinergic system and other substances are mentioned and discussed. Promising research lines on the orexinergic system are highlighted (signaling pathways, heterogeneity of the hypothalamic orexinergic neurons, receptor-receptor interaction, and sex differences). Each of the orexin 1 and 2 receptors plays a unique role in energy metabolism, exerting a differential function in obesity. Additional preclinical/clinical studies must be carried out to demonstrate the beneficial effects mediated by orexin receptor antagonists. Because therapies applied are in general ineffective when they are directed against a single target, the best option for successful anti-obesity treatments is the development of combination therapies as well as the development of new and more specific orexin receptor antagonists.

Biomass burning is one of the major emitters of airborne particulate matter (PM) and gaseous mercury. In order to apply the isotopic fingerprinting method to process identification and source apportionment studies, isotopic characterizations of targeted substances at emission are indispensable. Here, we report the stable isotopic composition of total gaseous mercury (TGM) and the stable and radiocarbon isotopic composition of low-volatile water-soluble nitrogen (LV-WSN) and organic carbon (LV-WSOC) in PM emitted from open grass field burning in the Aso region of Japan. The measurement results showed that TGM concentrations in the air increased during the open field burning events, indicating the presence of TGM emissions. The results of LV-WSN analysis showed very low concentrations; therefore, the stable nitrogen isotope ratios could not be measured. The stable mercury isotope ratios exhibited lighter composition than those observed during non-biomass-burning days. The analysis of LV-WSOC revealed heavy stable carbon isotope ratios (average ± SD, −18 ± 2‰), suggesting a substantial contribution from C4 plant carbon. The 14C analysis showed that more than 98% of the LV-WSOC was modern carbon, indicating the contribution of plant carbon to PM emitted from biomass burning. The findings here provide reference isotope compositions of TGM and particulate LV-WSOC from biomass burning in this region.

The development of quiet vehicles, such as hybrid and electric vehicles, has environmental benefits. However, the quietness of these vehicles may increase the risk to pedestrians, particularly those with visual impairment. We hypothesized that a “design-of-awareness” process based on the concept of sound education for hearing and recognizing the sound generated by the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) installed in quiet vehicles may change peoples’ attitudes toward the sound and improve their ability to detect it. To verify this hypothesis, two experiments using a quiet vehicle were conducted to examine whether participants were able to detect the AVAS sound. The results revealed that few participants were initially able to detect the AVAS sound. After the design-of-awareness process was conducted, 1 and 3 month follow-up surveys were conducted to clarify its effects and longevity. The results revealed that approximately half of the participants became able to detect the sound, and that their attitudes toward the sound were changed. In addition, the number of participants who were able to detect the sound increased over time. These results indicate that a design-of-awareness process could be helpful for training people to detect the sound of quiet vehicles.

Metallic nanoparticles are a new class of materials with applications in medicine, pharmaceutical and agriculture. Using biological, chemical and physical approaches, nanoparticles with amazing properties are obtained. Copper is one of the most-found elements and plays an important part in the normal functioning of organisms. Coper nanoparticles have superior antibacterial properties when comparing them to present day antibiotics. Moreover, apart from their antibacterial role, antifungal, antiviral and anticancer properties have been described. Although the mechanism of actions is not completely understood, copper nanoparticles can become a viable alternative in fighting multi-resistant bacteria strains. We hereby review the already existing data on copper nanoparticle synthesis, effects and mechanisms of action as well as toxicity.

With the exponential growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing is in the limelight for its ability to quickly and efficiently process numerous data generated by IoT devices. EdgeX Foundry is a representative open-source-based IoT gateway platform, providing various IoT protocol services and interoperability between them. However, due to the absence of container orchestration technology, such as automated deployment and dynamic resource management for application services, EdgeX Foundry has fundamental limitations of a potential edge computing platform. In this paper, we propose EdgeX over Kubernetes, which enables remote service deployment and autoscaling to application services by running EdgeX Foundry over Kubernetes, which is a product-grade container orchestration tool. Experimental evaluation results prove that the proposed platform increases manageability through the remote deployment of application services and improves the throughput of the system and service quality with real-time monitoring and autoscaling.

To improve the ergonomic reliability of medical equipment design during the operation process, a method for evaluating the operating procedure of a medical equipment interface according to functional resonance analysis method (FRAM)-Moran’s I and cognitive reliability and error analysis method (CREAM) is proposed in this study. The novelty of this research is to analyze the ergonomic reliability of medical equipment in a more systematic manner and to minimize the impact of human subjectivity and individual differences on the evaluation results of the operation process. To solve the calculation problem of functional resonance in FRAM and to make the evaluation results more objective, Moran’s I was introduced to quantify the deviation degree caused by the individual differences of the subjects. By giving weights based on Moran’s I, the influence of individual differences and subjectivity on the evaluation results can be minimized, to a certain extent. Considering the importance of a special environment, which is not fully considered by the conventional CREAM, the weighting values based on Moran’s I, Delphi survey, and technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) were adopted to assign weights to common performance conditions (CPCs) in CREAM. The optimal design scheme was selected more objectively than in the conventional method. The validity and practicability of this operation process evaluation method was verified by a statistical method based on ergonomic reliability experiments.

As an area frequently suffering from storm surge, the Yangtze River Estuary in the East China Sea requires fast and accurate prediction of water level for disaster prevention and mitigation. Due to storm surge process being affected by the long-term and short-term correlation of multiple factors, this study attempts to introduce a data-driven idea into the water level prediction during storm surge. By collecting the observed meteorological data and water level data of 12 typhoons from 1986 to 2016 at the Lusi tidal station of Jiangsu Province, China near the north branch of the Yangtze River Estuary, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model was constructed by using multi-factor time series to predict the water level during the storm surge period. This study concludes that the LSTM model performs precisely for 1 h prediction of water level during the storm surge period and it can provide a 15 h prediction of water level within a limited error, and the prediction performance of the LSTM model is visibly superior to the four traditional ML models by 41% in terms of Accuracy Coefficient.

In recent acoustic scene classification (ASC) models, various auxiliary methods to enhance performance have been applied, e.g., subsystem ensembles and data augmentations. Particularly, the ensembles of several submodels may be effective in the ASC models, but there is a problem with increasing the size of the model because it contains several submodels. Therefore, it is hard to be used in model-complexity-limited ASC tasks. In this paper, we would like to find the performance enhancement method while taking advantage of the model ensemble technique without increasing the model size. Our method is proposed based on a mean-teacher model, which is developed for consistency learning in semi-supervised learning. Because our problem is supervised learning, which is different from the purpose of the conventional mean-teacher model, we modify detailed strategies to maximize the consistency learning performance. To evaluate the effectiveness of our method, experiments were performed with an ASC database from the Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events 2021 Task 1A. The small-sized ASC model with our proposed method improved the log loss performance up to 1.009 and the F1-score performance by 67.12%, whereas the vanilla ASC model showed a log loss of 1.052 and an F1-score of 65.79%.

Conventional design of jigs and fixtures has become unsuitable given the requirements of modern technology and complexity and diversity in the production with the rapid update of products. Computer-aided design (CAD) of jigs and fixtures is an effective solution in this direction. The current paper focuses on a computer-aided design of the traditional jigs and fixtures and developed a system containing tailor-made software, created using the Visual Basic programming language and installed on it the viewer screen to show the part. The developed system has been built by connecting Visual Basic programming language to the SolidWorks software on which the part is drawn and saved as STEP AP-203 file format, and the system reads and extracts the data from the STEP AP-203 file. Heuristic rules of feature recognition are pre-prepared for checking the extracted geometric data and deciding which data shape will represent the machining feature; then, the system provides the optimum design of the traditional jigs and fixtures for a group of hollow cylindrical parts that contain a group of cross-holes on the cylinder body, whether perpendicular or offset from the cylinder’s axis, (inclined or inclined offset, or blind or through, by applying pre-prepared heuristic rules for the design of traditional jigs and fixtures.

We report on the tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) using a crystalline nanostructured silicon-based layer via an experimental and numerical simulation study. The minority carrier lifetime and implied open-circuit voltage reveals an ameliorated passivation property, which gives the motivation to run a simulation. The passivating contact of an ultra-thin silicon oxide (1.2 nm) capped with a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) grown 30 nm thick nanocrystalline silicon oxide (nc-SiOx), provides outstanding passivation properties with low recombination current density (Jo) (~1.1 fA/cm2) at a 950 °C annealing temperature. The existence of a thin silicon oxide layer (SiO2) at the rear surface with superior quality (low pinhole density, Dph < 1 × 10−8 and low interface trap density, Dit ≈ 1 × 108 cm−2 eV−1), reduces the recombination of the carriers. The start of a small number of transports by pinholes improves the fill factor (FF) up to 83%, reduces the series resistance (Rs) up to 0.5 Ω cm2, and also improves the power conversion efficiency (PEC) by up to 27.4%. The TOPCon with a modified nc-SiOx exhibits a dominant open circuit voltage (Voc) of 761 mV with a supreme FF of 83%. Our simulation provides an excellent match with the experimental results and supports excellent passivation properties. Overall, our study proposed an ameliorated knowledge about tunnel oxide, doping in the nc-SiOx layer, and additionally about the surface recombination velocity (SRV) impact on TOPCon solar cells.

Today global health problems such as increased risks of oxidative stress-related diseases and antibiotic resistance are issues of serious concern. Oxidative stress is considered to be the underlying cause of many contemporary pathological conditions such as neurological disorders, ischemia, cancer, etc. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a concerning issue in clinical practice, causing an increase in deadly infections. Bryophytes synthesize an outstanding number of secondary metabolites that have shown several potential therapeutic and nutraceutical applications. Research in the field has led to the isolation and characterization of several compounds (flavonoids, terpenoids, and bibenzyls). Some of these compounds have shown promising in vitro antibacterial activities and antioxidant potential comparable to known natural antioxidants such as ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol. However, the process of developing new drugs from naturally occurring molecules is often an impervious path. In this paper, the current state of research of bryophytic antioxidant and antibacterial applications is discussed.

The Shanghai soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility (SXFEL), which is the first X-ray FEL facility in China, is being constructed in two phases: the test facility (SXFEL-TF) and the user facility (SXFEL-UF). The test facility was initiated in 2006 and funded in 2014. The commissioning of the test facility was finished in 2020. The user facility was funded in 2016 to upgrade the accelerator energy and build two undulator lines with five experimental end-stations. The output photon energy of the user facility will cover the whole water window range. This paper presents an overview of the SXFEL facility, including considerations of the upgrade, layout and design, construction status, commissioning progress and future plans.

The paper explores the potentials of shape memory alloys (SMAs) for the design of autoreactive façade systems without using additional external energy. The exploration is conducted and assessed through the design of a façade concept for the city of Athens in Greece, aiming to improve both the indoor and outdoor environment by means of a kinetic autoreactive system featuring a dual-seasonal function, with a focus on the building’s direct and indirect impact on the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The paper covers a demonstration of the methodology followed, using a feedback-loop logic informed by environmental and energy performance evaluation studies in Grasshopper to optimize the geometry and movement of the shading component. During the façade design process, a comprehensive and systematic computational toolset is being developed, targeted on the abovementioned performance evaluation studies. Through the development and assessment of the façade concept, the objective is to explore the potentials and limitations for the application of autoreactive envelopes in the façade design. At the same time, the aim is to exploit the possibilities and optimization potentials offered through the developed iterative computational workflows, by showcasing the methodology and interoperability logic of the digital tools used for the data interchange.

We investigate the possibility of sensing opioid drugs, such as fentanyl, by their THz electromagnetic signatures. The methods include both computer modeling and experiments. Molecular dynamics simulations predict that fentanyl should display THz resonances, with several of them occurring below 1.0 THz; the lowest one is at around 0.337 THz (337 GHz). Spectroscopy measurements were conducted on oxycodone, which was used as a surrogate for fentanyl. They display vibrational absorption resonances between ∼1.4 and 1.6 THz.

This paper presents the Hybrid and Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution algorithms (HSADE) to solve an egg distribution problem in Thailand. We introduce and formalize a model for a multi-product, multi-depot vehicle routing problem with a time window, a heterogeneous fleet and inventory restrictions. The goal of the problem is to minimize the total cost. The multiple products comprise customers’ demands with different egg sizes. This paper presents a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model, an initial solution-based constructive heuristic, a new self-adaptive mutation strategy, and a neighborhood search structure with the probability to improve DE. The two measurements of criteria are the heuristic performance (HP) compared with the solution obtained by MILP and the relative improvement (RI) of the solution compared with Thailand’s current egg distribution practice. The computational results show that the performance of HSADE is better than the current practice, and HSADE can provide on average a 14.13% improvement in total cost. Additionally, our proposed algorithm can be applied to similar agriculture logistics in Thailand and worldwide.

This article discusses the assessment of groundwater quality using a hybrid technique that would aid in the convenience of groundwater (GW) quality monitoring. Twenty eight (28) GW samples representing 62 barangays in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines were analyzed for their physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal (HM) concentrations. The 28 GW samples were collected at suburban sites identified by the coordinates produced by Global Positioning System Montana 680. The analysis of heavy metal concentrations was conducted onsite using portable handheld X-Ray Fluorescence (pXRF) Spectrometry. Hybrid machine learning—geostatistical interpolation (MLGI) method, specific to neural network particle swarm optimization with Empirical Bayesian Kriging (NN-PSO+EBK), was employed for data integration, GW quality spatial assessment and monitoring. Spatial map of metals concentration was produced using the NN-PSO-EBK. Another, spot map was created for observed metals concentration and was compared to the spatial maps. Results showed that the created maps recorded significant results based on its MSEs with values such as 1.404 × 10−4, 5.42 × 10−5, 6.26 × 10−4, 3.7 × 10−6, 4.141 × 10−4 for Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, respectively. Also, cross-validation of the observed and predicted values resulted to R values range within 0.934–0.994 which means almost accurate. Based on these results, it can be stated that the technique is efficient for groundwater quality monitoring. Utilization of this technique could be useful in regular and efficient GW quality monitoring.

This paper empirically evaluates two kinds of features, which are extracted, respectively, with traditional statistical methods and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), in order to improve the performance of seismic patch image classification. In the latter case, feature vectors, named “CNN-features”, were extracted from one trained CNN model, and were then used to learn existing classifiers, such as support vector machines. In this case, to learn the CNN model, a technique of transfer learning using synthetic seismic patch data in the source domain, and real-world patch data in the target domain, was applied. The experimental results show that CNN-features lead to some improvements in the classification performance. By analyzing the data complexity measures, the CNN-features are found to have the strongest discriminant capabilities. Furthermore, the transfer learning technique alleviates the problems of long processing times and the lack of learning data.

Due to the lack of surface space, most structures are heading underground. The box culvert is underground infrastructure and serves to protect the buried structure from the underground environments, but it has a different characteristic from other structures in that the inner space is empty. Therefore, in this study, the vertical earth pressure which is the most significant effective stress acting on a box culvert was measured by conducting a geotechnical centrifuge model test. A box culvert was installed following the embankment installation method, and the vertical earth pressure acting on it was measured considering the cover depth, gravitational acceleration, and loading and unloading conditions. The soil pressure measured was greater than the existing theoretical value under high cover depth and the unloading condition, which is considered as the variability of many soils or the residual stress acting under the loading condition. Finally, a goodness-of-fit test was conducted as a part of variability analysis. The measured earth pressure was found to be considerably larger than the existing theoretical value, and the variability was large as well. This means the existing theoretical equation is under-designed, which should be reflected in future designs.

Loop closure detection is a key challenge in visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) systems, which has attracted significant research interest in recent years. It entails correctly determining whether a scene has previously been visited by a mobile robot and completely establishing the consistent maps of motion. There are many loop closure detection methods that have been proposed, but most of these algorithms are handcrafted features-based and perform weak robustness to illumination variations. In this paper, we investigate a Siamese Convolutional Neural Network (SCNN) to solve the task of loop closure detection in RGB-D SLAM. Firstly, we use a pre-trained SCNN model to extract features as image descriptors; then, the L2 norm distance is adopted as a similarity metric between descriptors. In terms of the learned features for matching, there are two key issues for discussion: (1) how to define an appropriate loss as supervision (utilizing the cross-entropy loss, the contrastive loss, or the combination of two); and (2) how to combine the appearance information in RGB images and position information in depth images (utilizing early fusion, mid-level fusion or late fusion). We compare our proposed method of different baseline by experiments carried out on two public datasets (New College and NYU), and our performance outperforms the state-of-the-art.

This paper deals with the optimization of the crossbars, parts of the existing frame of the experimental system of the Alternative SkidCar. This part plays a crucial role and is designed to enable and ensure reduced adhesion conditions between the vehicle and the road. To this end, its optimization targeted here is performed using both analytical calculations and simulations in MSC Adams software, wherein the loading forces and boundary conditions on the frame support wheels are obtained considering the static conditions, as well as the change of the direction of travel. The least favourable load observed was used, later on, as the input value for the strength analysis of the frame. The analysis was performed using the finite element method (FEM) in SolidWorks. Based on the linear and nonlinear analyses performed, the course of stress on the frame arms and critical points with the highest stress concentration were determined. Subsequently, according to the results obtained, a new design for the current frame was proposed and, thereby, warrants greater rigidity, stability and strength to the entire structure, while reducing its weight and maximizing the potential of the selected material. The benefit of the current contribution lies in the optimization of the current frame shape, in terms of the position of weld joints, the location of the reinforcements and the thickness of the material used.

Generating natural language descriptions for structured representation (e.g., a graph) is an important yet challenging task. In this work, we focus on SQL-to-text, a task that maps a SQL query into the corresponding natural language question. Previous work represents SQL as a sparse graph and utilizes a graph-to-sequence model to generate questions, where each node can only communicate with k-hop nodes. Such a model will degenerate when adapted to more complex SQL queries due to the inability to capture long-term and the lack of SQL-specific relations. To tackle this problem, we propose a relation-aware graph transformer (RGT) to consider both the SQL structure and various relations simultaneously. Specifically, an abstract SQL syntax tree is constructed for each SQL to provide the underlying relations. We also customized self-attention and cross-attention strategies to encode the relations in the SQL tree. Experiments on benchmarks WikiSQL and Spider demonstrate that our approach yields improvements over strong baselines.

Nanostructured metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are considered proper candidates to develop low cost and real-time resistive sensors able to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs), e.g., diacetyl. Small quantities of diacetyl are generally produced during the fermentation and storage of many foods and beverages, conferring a typically butter-like aroma. Since high diacetyl concentrations are undesired, its monitoring is fundamental to identify and characterize the quality of products. In this work, a tin oxide sensor (SnO2) is used to detect gaseous diacetyl. The effect of different working atmospheres (air, N2 and CO2), as well as the contemporary presence of ethanol vapors, used to reproduce the typical alcoholic fermentation environment, are evaluated. SnO2 sensor is able to detect diacetyl in all the analyzed conditions, even when an anaerobic environment is considered, showing a detection limit lower than 0.01 mg/L and response/recovery times constantly less than 50 s.

In this study, nickel phosphide nanowires with various structures and compositions were fabricated for the first time via magnetically-assisted liquid phase synthesis. The curvature and aspect ratio of the nanowires largely depended on the strength of the magnetic field applied during synthesis. Their phosphorus content together with the morphology were significantly modified according to the pH and reducing agent concentration. Nanowires with different structures and phosphorus contents were preliminarily tested for their capabilities to serve in general electrochemical applications. The degree of reaction (i.e., amount of reaction charge) increased with increases in the reaction area and phosphorus content of the nanowires. The rate characteristics of the reaction showed a peculiar increasing trend for a small reaction surface area and low phosphorus content. A change in the ohmic overpotential according to the nanowire curvature (aspect ratio) and porosity was suggested to be the reason for this unusual trend. Electrodes with high phosphorus contents or high reaction surface areas rapidly deteriorated during repetitive redox reactions. Based on the results for the degradation degree, the effect of the reaction surface area dominated that of the phosphorus content in the deterioration of the nickel phosphide nanowires.

Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a new soil remediation technology, which can improve the physical and mechanical properties of soil by transporting bacterial solution and cementation solution to loose soil and precipitating calcium carbonate precipitation between soil particles through microbial mineralization. Based on this technique, the effects of different fine particle content and pore ratio on the physical and chemical properties of silt after reinforcement were studied. The content of calcium carbonate, the ability of silt to fixed bacteria, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), permeability coefficient and microstructure of the samples were determined. The results showed the following: In the process of calcium carbonate precipitation induced by microorganisms, more than 50% bacterial suspension remained on the surface of silt particles and their pores. The higher the bacterial fixation rate of silt, the more CaCO3 was generated during the solidification process. The bacterial fixation rate and CaCO3 content both decreased with the increase in the pore ratio and increased with the increase in the fine particle content. XRD and SEM images show that the calcium carbonate is mainly composed of spherical vaterite and acicular cluster aragonite. There is an obvious correlation between unconfined compressive strength and CaCO3 content of silt. When CaCO3 content accumulates to a certain extent, its strength will be significantly improved. The unconfined compressive strength of silt A with pore ratio of 0.75 and fine particle content of 75% is 2.22 MPa when the single injection amount of cementing fluid is 300 mL. The permeability coefficient of cured silt can be reduced by 1 to 4 orders of magnitude compared with that of untreated silt. In particular, the permeability of MICP-treated silt A is almost impermeable.

Dental nanocomposite resins have been proposed as potential restorative materials that are inevitably challenged with dynamic oral conditions. This investigation focused on the contribution of miscellaneous silane blends, used as coupling agents, to the ultimate performance of dental nanocomposite dimethacrylate resins. Herein, silica nanoparticles were initially silanized with functional/functional or functional/non-fuctional silane mixtures (50/50 wt/wt). Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) verified the modification of nanosilica. The organomodified nanoparticles were then inserted into Bis-GMA/TEGDMA based resins by hand spatulation process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) findings revealed a broad distribution of fillers in the polymer network when reactive silanes and their corresponding blends were used. Furthermore, optical profilometry results showed that the presence of functional/non-functional mixtures can produce relatively smooth composite surfaces. Polymerization shrinkage was found to be limited upon the decrease of the degree of conversion regarding all the tested silane mixtures. The functional/functional silane blend assured the highest flexural properties and the lowest solubility after the storage of the nanocomposite in water for 1 week at 37 °C. The above experimental data could contribute to the proper designing of dental nanocomposite resins which may fit the modern clinical applications.

In advanced manufacturing technologies (including complex automated processes) and their branches of industry, perception and evaluation of the object parameters are the most critical factors. Many production machines and workplaces are currently equipped as standard with high-quality special sensing devices based on vision systems to detect these parameters. This article focuses on designing a reachable and fully functional vision system based on two standard CCD cameras usage, while the emphasis is on the RS 232C communication interface between two sites (vision and robotic systems). To this, we combine principles of the 1D photogrammetric calibration method from two known points at a stable point field and the available packages inside the processing unit of the vision system (as filtering, enhancing and extracting edges, weak and robust smoothing, etc.). A correlation factor at camera system (for reliable recognition of the sensed object) was set from 84 to 100%. Then, the pilot communication between both systems was proposed and then tested through CREAD/CWRITE commands according to protocol 3964R (used for the data transfer). Moreover, the system was proven by successful transition of the data into the robotic system. Since research gaps in this field still exist and many vision systems are based on PC processing or intelligent cameras, our potential research topic tries to provide the price–performance ratio solution for those who cannot regularly invest in the newest vision technology; however, they could still do so to stay competitive.

Hydrocarbons in self-sourced reservoirs are determined by the concentration and maturation of organic matter in sediments. As a result, lowering risk in unconventional resource research and development requires knowledge of hydrocarbon potentiality factors. The geochemical data for the Montney Formation samples studied suggest that it is a fair to good source rock with type IV kerogen that can generate gas in general. The statistical modelling of the analyzed data reveals a valuable technique for identifying characteristics, clusters, and linkages that affect source rock assessment. The Spearman’s correlation coefficient showed a good positive correlation between the total organic carbon (TOC) and free hydrocarbons (S1), generating potential (S2), and potential yield (GP). There was a weak correlation with the maturity index (Tmax) and hydrogen index (HI) and a highly negative correlation between the TOC and oxygen index (OI). On the other hand, the principal component analysis (PCA) showed the presence of three factors affecting the source rock evaluation. Factor 1 included TOC, S1, and S2, which are related to organic richness and hydrocarbon potentiality; factor 2 contained the production index (PI), and the generated CO2 (S3) was related to the organic matter source. Factor 3 included the Tmax and HI related to the type of organic matter and thermal maturity. In addition, the TwoStep cluster analysis separated the source rock in the study area into two major groups. Cluster 1 is characterized relatively by high HI, TOC, S1, S2, and PI, with Tmax < 455 °C indicating good source rock in the mature level with the capability to generate little oil and condensate gas. Cluster 2 is characterized by relatively low HI, TOC, S1, S2, and PI, with Tmax > 455 °C, indicating an over-mature source rock in the dry gas window.

To objectively assess the anti-electromagnetic interference ability of the navigation receiver, the sensitivity criterion of a certain type of navigation receiver is tested under single-frequency continuous wave electromagnetic radiation with an optimized testing method. The experimental results show that it is difficult to guarantee the accuracy of the measurement value of the sensitivity level by using the carrier-to-noise density ratio (C/N0) as the sensitivity criterion, but the initial C/N0 of each satellite can be used as the basis for identifying whether the navigation system has recovered from the interference. The experimental error is dramatically decreased when the sensitivity criterion of “the sensitive phenomenon appears within the first 4 s, and the loss of positioning lasts for 30 s” is employed, the variable interference power step size is adopted and all of the satellites C/N0 are required to recover to the initial value after an interference. The critical interference field intensity error can be controlled within 1 dB by using all these measures. The sensitivity law of the navigation receiver is the same under different working signal intensities. It is significantly sensitive in the working frequency bandwidth. It is also quite sensitive in −11.5 MHz~55.5 MHz of the frequency offset range. The positive sensitive bandwidth is about 5 times that of the negative sensitive bandwidth.

In this paper, we investigate the lateral vibration of fully clamped beam-like microstructures subjected to an external transverse harmonic excitation. Eringen’s nonlocal theory is applied, and the viscoelasticity of materials is considered. Hence, the small-scale effect and viscoelastic properties are adopted in the higher-order mathematical model. The classical stress and classical bending moments in mechanics of materials are unavailable when modeling a microstructure, and, accordingly, they are substituted for the corresponding effective nonlocal quantities proposed in the nonlocal stress theory. Owing to an axial elongation, the nonlinear partial differential equation that governs the lateral motion of beam-like viscoelastic microstructures is derived using a geometric, kinematical, and dynamic analysis. In the next step, the ordinary differential equations are obtained, and the time-dependent lateral displacement is determined via a perturbation method. The effects of external excitation amplitude on excited vibration are presented, and the relations between the nonlocal parameter, viscoelastic damping, detuning parameter, and the forced amplitude are discussed. Some dynamic phenomena in the excited vibration are revealed, and these have reference significance to the dynamic design and optimization of beam-like viscoelastic microstructures.
