In order to improve the treatment efficiency of the constrained layer damping (CLD), it is meaningful to have a study on its layout optimization. This paper based on current research of Cellular Automata (CA) algorithm for CLD optimization, points out that the current application of CA algorithm is less efficient, considering that adding or deleting a single CLD patch almost does no change to the entire structure, then makes a simplification and modification of CA algorithm. With the aim at improving the structural modal loss factor, this paper uses the current CA algorithm and its modified algorithm to optimize a partial CLD plate. The results have shown that the modified CA algorithm for CLD optimization can not only substantially increase computing efficiency, but to some extent, improve the optimization effectiveness.

Some common criteria for predicting the plastic failure of geomaterials, including the Mohr-Coulomb model, can be represented as conic constraints. Thus, by formulating finite element limit analysis (FELA) problems with such materials as second-order cone programs (SOCPs), solutions to small-and medium-scale problems are readily obtained using current state-of-the-art optimisation software that are based on polynomially-bounded interior-point methods (IPMs). Unfortunately, when progressing to large-scale 2D and 3D problems, these schemes often struggle with the increased computational burden of obtaining a search direction at each iteration of the IPM using conventional direct solvers that implement some form of Gaussian elimination. In this paper, current conic optimisation software is compared for some medium and large-sized FELA problems. Additionally, a scheme which avoids the factorisation of large linear systems, through the use of a Krylov subspace solver, is developed and compared to existing software.

This paper presents a fast local stereo algorithm that suitable to real time applications. Thanks to the techniques like Box-filtering, fixed-window-based stereo matching algorithms can be really fast, but perform not well in some areas, i.e. the repetitive pattern and low texture areas. In order to improve the reliability of fixed-window algorithm and keep the algorithms speed, the proposed approach can deal with the repetitive pattern and low texture areas at a small computational cost. Experimental results show that the proposed approach provides a big improvement in accuracy compare to fixed-window algorithm, and the speed of the algorithm is still fast.

The main propulsion plant (MPP) on marine sea-going ships consisting of a diesel engine as the main engine and driving the ship propeller is with the torsional vibrations to be calculated in accordance with the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships. The Rules are given by one of maritime registers in the world that are the members of IACS, such as Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMR), DNV, ABS, at el. The TV calculation (TVC) on the MPP usually is certainly a monumental calculation task and is conducted with special software for TVC. Nowadays, in accordance with the Rules, almost modern software products for TVC have the abilities to calculate the TVs at normal working regimes and at misfire regimes (called by Normal or Misfire regimes relatively) with only one of cylinders of marine diesel engine (MDE) while engine speed range covers from the minimum to maximum values of the operation speeds. The paper presents improved algorithms and software for automatic calculating the TVs (SATVC) at the Normal and the Misfire regimes, in which the misfiring processes appear not only in one cylinder, but also in two of the MDE cylinders together. The SATVC was based on the made mathematical models, algorithms and coded in LabView by authors. The SATVC consists of modules for automatic calculation of freedom TVs (FTVs), excited torsional moments (ETM), excited TVs (ETVs), permitted torsional pressures (PTP), and common management (CTVC). TVC at every working regime of MDE was automatically conducted in the following procedure: Configuration of the MPP for TVC; Calculation of FTVs; Calculation of ETM; Calculation of ETVs); Calculation of ETVs, and solution of the TVC in considered working regime. The working regime of MDE was modeled by a vector of firing coefficients (VFC) of every MDE cylinder.

This paper proposes a method of using the B-spline mathematical model to plan high smoothness curve trajectories with heading condition through given waypoints for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in particular and ships with rudder systems in general. In addition, this paper examines some of the physical limitations of this vehicle, which lead to some binding conditions of the trajectory. Besides, the paper applies B-spline approximation method to reduce the curvature of the trajectory, when waypoints are too close and we do not need to go through exactly these waypoints in the 2D plane. Finally, this paper also proposes the genetic algorithm application with some modifications to solve the optimization of B-spline path length with constraint in turning radius of the vehicle.

Structural dynamics in structural engineering analysis involves the modal parameters (natural frequency, mode shape and damping ratio). The modal parameters of engineering structures is mainly influenced by the damping and stiffness properties. This research paper presents the reliability of CELAS element in the finite element modelling to represent the stiffness parameter. The simplified engineering structure considered in this study is a mass-spring system with multi-degree of freedom. Experimental modal testing is performed using an electro-magnetic vibration shaker as an exciter and an accelerometer to record the natural frequency of the system. HyperMesh normal mode analysis is used to compute the natural frequency of the mass-spring system. The comparative evaluation is performed in order to identify the accuracy of the natural frequencies obtained from the modelling analysis and the measured counterparts. Consequently, it is found that the element CELAS has a good capability to represent as the stiffness parameter in the finite element modelling.

Polypropylene bags are widely used in many industries especially in agriculture and food industry. However, industries especially in food or fertilizer industries, need to use the polypropylene bags that can withstand a high level of humidity. To overcome this problem, a two-layers bag is required. This two-layers bag consists of outer layer woven bag and inner layer polypropylene bag. Currently they are produced by using conventional method where they are assembled manually by the workers. This manual method causes longer production time process, a high number of workers, and higher cost for mass production. To enhance the operation performance, automated polypropylene bags assembly system is proposed. By using an automated system, it can improve quality and consistency of processes, and reduced direct human labor costs and expenses where the worker is unneeded for assembling the polypropylene bag. To overcome this problem, this project is dedicated to design and develop a new Automated Polypropylene Bag Assembly Machine (APBAM) to operate the process automatically. This machine will execute three main processes - Grasping, Handling and Feeding. This paper will focus on the design of pneumatic actuator for grasping polypropylene bags in upward and downward motion. The design will be calibrated, analyzed and evaluated. The design of automated polypropylene bags assembly system will help to solve some of the problems that have been identified.

In this paper, an examination hall assistive robot (EHAR) had been developed to operate in an examination hall, to collect and deliver extra answer booklet for examination candidates. The systems will respond to user or student request through a table transmitter on each table via radio communication. The request by the students is collected by a CPU, before it is transmitted to the robot. The robot moves by following line on floor and read RFID tag for localization purpose. The robot has the ability to stop or avoid obstacle along the path received from the information obtained by the ultrasonic sensors. After the integration process, the performance of the developed system had been tested. The test had been carried out by moving EHAR through 3 points (RFID tags), where EHAR is required to turn on certain angle and direction after each tags read. The test was then repeated for another 10 times to obtained correct average results. The percentages of the average successful turns made by the EHAR are 83.3%. Therefore, it is hoped that this system will be implemented in exam halls and serves its purposes.

Mid-Life Refurbishment (MLR) is a process conducted in many industries to improve or extend the life span of assets such as machines, infrastructures and systems. The objective of MLR works execution is to extend the life span, sustain the train performance and achieve system reliability. Typically, the refurbishment scope consists of overhaul, upgrading and rectification works. The biggest challenge is to determine) the scope of refurbishment works and to create equilibrium between the feasibility and viability of the project. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to discuss the current practice of performing MLR maintenance through the utilization of Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and to transform the existing FMEA used by the automotive industry to fulfil the needs of Rolling Stock. The use of FMEA is critical in determining) the scope of train refurbishment work. It was carried out at the initial stages of the process in order to determine Risk Priority Number (RPN) to prioritize the type of refurbishment plans and scope. The design of the FMEA Worksheets, De-sign of FMEA severity Evaluation Criteria, Design of Occurrence Evaluation Criteria and Design of FMEA Prevention/Detection Criteria were adopted and adapted from the generic format so that it is coherent with Railway Industries. The results based on the transformation framework, the plan and scope of overhaul, upgrading and rectification were defined using the FMEA. Out of the 80 elements of MLR works that were analyzed using the FMEA approach, it was found that 46 elements needed overhaul, 23 elements needed upgrading and 11 elements needed rectification works. Finally, the application of the FMEA helped determine the MLR scope of work from 13 systems. The case study was taken from the Malaysia LRT Project, and currently the fleet has been in operation for more than 20 years (operated since year 1998).

Construction projects are a combination of high complicated procedures that rarely go with the plan. The greatest dangers projects are the construction since it linked with an extraordinary amount of ambiguity and threat and that because of the business activities nature, procedures, and the outside surroundings. This paper investigates the problems during the pre-construction phase and the optimal solution for this problem by using to algorithm, partial swarm and Gravitational search algorithm. The results show that the construction problems have a severe effect on both time and cost and these problems must be treated immediately and this requires sophisticated techniques by using computer science. GSA and PSO are both used and show excellent results in solving these problems, the GSA algorithm shows better results in both the velocity is taken to find the solutions and in the accuracy. PSO is still a good technique in finding the solution and their future recommendation in making an expert system to find the solution more than one project and their interdependency.

According to recent research, quite a large part of the buses have exceeded the loading standards, which causes road damage. In order to reduce weight, the use of lighter materials such as aluminum was used. Moreover, the cost of maintenance decreases and the fuel consumption is reduced. In this paper we summarize the study of the dynamic and vibrational behavior of the chassis, including the rolling system. In the paper [2], several models have been elaborated necessary for this study. In the present paper we proposed the integration and, implicitly, the finding of the dynamic response, as a result of the behavior of the chassis in operation, in the form of time functions that we represented graphically according to a real numerical application, these representations better suggesting this behavior.

Retinal microsurgery is one of the most technically demanding surgeries, during which the surgical tool needs to be inserted into the eyeball and is constantly constrained by the sclerotomy port. During the surgery, any unexpected manipulation could cause extreme tool-sclera contact force leading to sclera damage. Although, a robot assistant could reduce hand tremor and improve the tool positioning accuracy, it cannot prevent or alarm the surgeon about the upcoming danger caused by surgeon’s misoperations, i.e., applying excessive force on the sclera. In this paper, we present a new method based on a Long Short Term Memory recurrent neural network for predicting the user behavior, i.e., the contact force between the tool and sclera (sclera force) and the insertion depth of the tool from sclera contact point (insertion depth) in real time (40Hz). The predicted force information is provided to the user through auditory feedback to alarm any unexpected sclera force. The user behavior data is collected in a mock retinal surgical operation on a dry eye phantom with Steady Hand Eye Robot and a novel multi-function sensing tool. The Long Short Term Memory recurrent neural network is trained on the collected time series of sclera force and insertion depth. The network can predict the sclera force and insertion depth 100 milliseconds in the future with 95.29% and 96.57% accuracy, respectively, and can help reduce the fraction of unsafe sclera forces from 40.19% to 15.43%.

This paper presents the methodology of designing a transducer for the experimental measurement of forces. For this purpose, an elastic element of the shape of the letter "S" is designed and manufactured. The elastic element designed in SolidWorks is subjected to virtual testing, using the finite element method in ANSYS. After validating the results obtained considering the maximum values of the stresses that appear for the nominal load, the experimental model of the transducer is realized. The central part of the elastic element behaves like a fixed double beam subjected to bend by the measuring force. On this beam are bonded strain gauge transducers, which measure the deformations produced by bending. The transducer is calibrated, in order to obtain the calibration constant, based on the obtained characteristic, that is, the dependence of the specific strain-deformation and force. The transducer thus constructed can be used in force measurement applications.

For a building equipped with anti-seismic devices, the value of the damping force of the dampers positioned at the superstructure is very important for an efficient anti-seismic damping and therefore an optimization of the seismic protection system with dampers is required. There are several configurations for placing the dampers that amplify the displacement and the damper axial force. This paper presents a computational mathematical model made for determining the coefficients of displacement multiplication and the damping force multiplication for two special positioning configurations of the antiseismic dampers using levers. Based on this model, a software program was created that allows to choose the geometrical parameters of two configurations of dampers placement having as criterion of choice the value of the amplification coefficient of the dampers displacement or the damper axial force.

This paper proposed a new facial feature points localization algorithm based on main characteristics of eyes.Use the result of pupil center position to initialize the model of hybrid improved active shape model (ASM) and active appearance model (AAM). The algorithm will use two-dimensional local gray information to update the feature point position when using ASM to locate the face contour feature points. As to the internal features point location, it establishes facial organs independent AAM model. At the same time, it optimizes measure functions of ASM and AAM to judge the convergence of search algorithm. The experimental results show that the new algorithm greatly improved the localization accuracy of facial feature points.

In order to adapt to the heterogeneity of terminals and networks, Scalable Video Coding (SVC) encodes raw video stream with different scales of temporal, spatial and quality into layers. Considering the P2P network characteristic, it is a challenging task to design an appropriate P2P steaming network resource allocation mechanism combining with SVC. In this paper, SVC is applied in P2P streaming based on game theory; considering free-riding, bandwidth conflicts in P2P multi-overlay and one chunk with multiple providers, we design a bidirectional serial auction model that jointly optimize the bandwidth allocation, the data scheduling and the incentive mechanism, then optimized allocation for scalable video streaming over P2P networks is achieved. With extensive theoretical analysis, we show that these games converge to an optimal topology for each overlay.

Multi-axial mechanical systems commonly encounter the problem of vibration while attempting to drive machining systems at high speed. Many effective methods based on feed-forward and feedback control have been proposed and applied for vibration reduction. In order to design controllers all methods require the exact knowledge of system parameters: vibration frequency and damping ratio. In recent years, low-cost Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers have been used for many applications in industry. This paper presents the advantage of low cost MEMS accelerometer to identify vibration parameters of mechanical systems in comparison to conventional expensive devices.

Recently, environmental damage caused by pest, invasive species Nutria has become an issue in Tottori Prefecture and development of an effective control method is in demand. Therefore, we have developed a robot that could identify pest by using ultrasonic sensor. The benefits of using this robot is that it is difficult to be influenced by environmental conditions and easily recognizes three dimensional input. Unfortunately, this robot could only confirm the presence of target object but could not identify the object, which means it could not differentiate whether the object is human or pest. In this paper, we have invented a robot that could visualize the object by using frequency-modulated ultrasound and Self-Organizing Map (SOM).

This paper proposes a neural vector control (NN-FOC) for speed regulation of interior-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive. The weights of proposed neural NN-FOC structure are optimally identified based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The novel MTPA approach is applied for IPMSM-based electric vehicle (EV) drive application. The novel neural NN-FOC control is verified in simulation tests and is compared with the traditional PI-FOC vector control. The simulation results prove that the maximum IPMSM speed range available with the new NN-FOC control is significantly improved in comparison with the traditional IPMSM PI-FOC control. As a consequent the proposed neural NN-FOC control can be successfully applied in advanced electric drives, particularly in PMSM-based electric vehicle EV drive application.

Poor heat treatment of the generator may cause cracks during operation. The presence ofcracks on the rotor causes the rotor to vibrate. The paper establishes a finite element modeling of aunit. The model is used to study the vibration response characteristics of the shafting system when thesupport characteristics of the generator are similar and the difference is significant. When thedifference in support characteristics between the two ends of the generator is large, the first-orderunbalance of the generator not only causes a large in-phase vibration at the first-order critical speed ofthe generator, but also causes a large reverse component. Finally, the reliability of the conclusion isfurther verified by combining the abnormal vibration diagnosis and processing cases of a generator. The innovation of the paper is to diagnose the possible cracks in the generator through the vibration ofthe generator, and then look at the original data in the generator manufacturing process to find that theheat treatment process of the generator rotor is poor.
