The triple points of sulfur hexafluoride (TPSF6), carbon dioxide (TPCO2) and xenon (TPXe) have possibility as candidates for replacing the triple point of mercury in the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90). Herein, we report the development of an apparatus for realizing the TPXe and two cells using Xe samples from two difference manufactures. The temperature of the TPXe was evaluated as 161.406 13 K ± 0.33 mK. We also investigated replacement of Hg with one of the three (Xe, CO2 and SF6) in the ITS-90 subranges involving the Hg fixed point. The differences between the ITS-90 temperatures and those temperatures obtained using each alternative scale were found to be within the uncertainty of the ITS-90 values. Variations between values for the different temperature subranges were also within this uncertainty. These results suggest that alternative standard materials such as Xe, CO2 and SF6 could replace Hg in the ITS-90 without changing the form of the interpolation functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
