The machining characteristics of A286 stainless steel material for various machining operations are comprehensively reviewed in this paper. As compared to austenitic stainless steels, this steel offers a good balance between oxidation resistance and high temperature strength. Because of these superior properties, the alloy is being used in jet engines, superchargers, fasteners, as well as applications that required high temperature including turbine wheels, structures, after burner components and casings. However, due to their low hardness, they restrict their employment in areas including wear from abrasives and make it difficult to achieving efficient machining processes. This review focuses on analyzing the machining aspects of A286 stainless steel in turning, milling, and drilling operations. A number of significant elements are looked at, including cutting parameters like the level of cut, the rate of feed, and speed as well as tooling materials, surface polish, and tool wear. The aim is to provide valuable insights into optimizing machining processes for A286 stainless steel, offering practical guidance to manufacturers and researchers for improving productivity and reducing costs. Furthermore, the review identifies and discusses challenges specific to machining A286 stainless steel and explores potential solutions to address issues such as work hardening, heat generation, and tool wear. The paper concludes by suggesting future research directions, including the investigation of advanced machining techniques, coating and surface modification of tool materials, sustainable machining approaches, and multi-objective optimization of machining processes. Overall, this review serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding the machining characteristics of A286 stainless steel, enabling the development of effective machining strategies for this material.
