The review paper substantiates the advantages of combined methods for the processing of metal surfaces by laser quenching and gas-powder laser cladding, thermal annealing, nanostructuring deformation treatments with sliding indenters and the formation of high-strength nanocomposite thin-film coatings on pre-hardened surfaces of austenitic structural steels and stainless steel synthesized by selective laser melting (SLM) and discusses the prospects of their further development.
