Teaching technical writing to engineering researchers particularly post graduate students is a demanding and complex task. Often the challenge faced by the language instructor is in having inadequate understanding on students' expected writing output which is engineering research publication. While the language instructors may find the language use aspect manageable, it is the understanding on expected writing output for engineering discipline that is a challenge; therefore, supporting language module developers to understand those expected outputs is essential and needed for the advancement in language teaching. In view on the need for the description of the targeted output which is engineering publication, this study focuses on supporting the understanding of engineering research publication specifically on drones. This study is aimed to describe the perimeter of research publication on drones written by prolific engineering writers. This paper uses bibliometric analysis method which is based on identifying the core research and authors, as well as the works that cited them. This study examines 275 research publications indexed in SCOPUS database and also investigates 1947 research publications that cited the 275 publications as reference source. The findings show that the publications are mostly articles, conference papers and reviews deriving mostly from the US, China and the UK whereas the citing documents are mostly from China, the UK and the US. This paper presents the description on the perimeter for both groups. Such description provides a ready narrative to language instructors as well as ready narratives and guidance on writing/content dimension for young scholars embarking on writing scholarly articles on drone research. This paper analyses rock mass quality based on an engineering geological investigation conducted at the Rongkong diversion tunnel, Luwu Utara Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The research area's surface and subsurface were mapped geologically, and drill cores were evaluated along the tunnel. In addition, laboratory test data further reinforced these investigations. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of the rock mass in the tunnel using the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) method. However, in cases involving weak rock and complex geology, another alternative approach is known as the Geological Strength Index (GSI) method. The results indicated that the Rongkong diversion tunnel under investigation primarily comprised lithological, including granodiorite and schist. The rock mass shows varying degrees of weathering, ranging from slight to complete. The study area's RMR rock mass values ranged from 33 – 59 (poor to fair quality), while the GSI values ranged from 15 – 58 (very poor to good quality). The effect of weathering degree can be one of the factors causing poor rock mass quality. Furthermore, this paper also examines the correlation between RMR and GSI. The equation GSI = 1.66RMR – 39.44 (R² = 0.94) was obtained from analysis of the correlation between GSI and RMR in the research area. Therefore, the obtained correlation results may serve as recommendations for other regions exhibiting comparable lithology and rock mass characteristics within the scope of this study. The objective of this paper is to ease the designing of mechanical spring, reduce calculation time, and improve accuracy and optimization in design using a Knowledge-based Engineering approach. The Application programming interface (API) was programmed using Java on the NetBeans IDE, which provides a variety of tools to build applications. Several standard reference books, research papers, and links were studied to finalize the formulae and factors like materials of the springs. The design for a user-friendly Graphic User Interface (GUI) was made considering the input and output values. To examine the API, we tested it with some numerical problem statements for each spring. From the results obtained, it was observed to have 0 to 3% of the error, when compared with manual calculations. The objectives of the calculator were achieved as the time of calculations was reduced by 95%. Other aims of accuracy and efficiency desired were fulfilled too. As a result of all this, the overall cost, errors, and complexities of mechanical components design are also reduced. The findings prove that this API can be a quick and efficient method to choose the spring of desired requirements for spring manufacturers and designers as it enhances design assistance. In communication engineering course, there are some challenges in explaining the basic theory and demonstrate how communication works in actual implementation. The concept of Software Defined Radio (SDR) implemented in hardware using USRP is utilized as a new tool to demonstrate the fundamental theory in the wireless communication system. This paper presents the SDR-based project for basic signal transmission and modulation, the FM Radio project, and the FMCW-Radar project using GNU Radio and USRP. The students design one project on a wireless communication topic; define the specific parameters simulating the software and implement the real transmission using USRP hardware. In our research, we are interested in the automatized detection of corrosion on images of steel structures. The paper presents the influence of the roughness of image and the value of widely used measures, namely properties of grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and grey level run length matrix (GLRLM). The results show the capability of these measures for the description of roughness in the image, which is typically considered significant evidence of corrosion. Safety and reliability are critical aspects of engineering and in our day-to-day life. In this paper, the possibilities of a new circuit protection technology namely Solid-State Circuit Breakers are explored. The various faults that can occur in low-voltage DC microgrids are investigated and the prospects of utilizing this technology to mitigate these risks are investigated. This research work also attempts to integrate the circuit protection methodology with energy monitoring to further enhance the overall capabilities of the system. To utilize this technology, a hardware prototype for a 48V DC microgrid setup capable of handling up to 500W of power was created. The system has two individual channels that distribute power to two types of loads, essential and non-essential respectively. Multiple modes are implemented to effectively tackle different faults, and remote monitoring was deployed through novel communication protocols. A series of tests was run to assess the system's overall performance under various operating conditions. Communication technologies have become a critical element of engineering and our day-to-day lives. In this paper, the complementary possibilities of two nascent technologies, namely LoRaWAN and ESP-NOW are explored. The LoRaWAN protocol is best suited for long-range communication, while ESP-NOW is ideal for short-range communication. The uniqueness of this research endeavor is focused on how both of these outstanding approaches can be strategically used in tandem, therefore capturing the best of both worlds. A proof-of-concept hardware system was designed and implemented in a 48V DC microgrid environment to observe the overall performance. The system was also deployed in a real-life setting to validate this work. From the experimental outputs, it was observed that ESP-NOW could be used to receive data from up to 20 devices in a 40-meter radius, while LoRaWAN could send data to a gateway as far as 35 kilometers away. All of this was accomplished while using only milliwatts of power. To ensure students of a 4-year engineering technology programme receive the best of learning in both theoretical and practical areas, conventional delivery channels were incorporated in the curriculum structure, e.g. lectures, labwork, tutorials and workshops. However, this arguably 'traditional' approach is inadequate to cater for the fast-paced dynamism of the industry, where graduates often find themselves disconnected with current industrial settings and practices upon entering the workplace. This could be related to the rather rigid curriculum contents, organisation and delivery methods associated with the teaching and learning of technical programmes in general. In addition the curriculum review and revise processes are usually lengthy and onerous, making the positive changes inevitably outpaced by transformation of the industrial parctices. Therefore, the integration of concurrent, in-trend elements of engineering practices in the existing curriculum and syllabus is necessary to enhance the students' learning experience. Recommended by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Council (ETAC), these exercises could be categorised as 'active' and 'passive' (Fig. 1), or simply denoted as 'classroom in industry' or 'industry in classroom' approaches. Whether bringing the students out to the relevant industry for site visit and interviews, or embedding real industrial problems in final year project (FYP), case studies, feasibility studies or investigation, this 'active' engagement would allow students first hand experience of their future workplace while learning the basic tenets in the respective courses. Similarly in a 'passive' manner, industrial participation in classrooms could be arranged via talks, studies, courses, consultations and evaluation of course-based projects, industrial logbook entries as well as employment of teaching staff with strong industrial background. Incorporation of these elements of engineering practices in the University is engineering technology programmes are organised and presented in this paper to illustrate the activites crafted with the industry to narrow the gap between textbooks and real world scenarios for in-house students. Notwithstanding the room aplenty for improvement, these engagements have had a profound impact on the students' learning, especially in bridging the theory-practical gap while providing exposure to current industrial practices and technology, hence better equpping them for the industry upon graduation. Engineering knowledge representation is an important step for creating applications that can automate product development in various problem domains. This article looks at enablers and obstacles for knowledge-based engineering (KBE) systems development. The key enabler envisioned is a well-established knowledge representation language supporting extendibility and interoperability for the concepts it describes. So far the transfer of knowledge within an organzation is seen highly dependent on in-house expertise and training routines. This paper proposes selection principles for knolwedge-based engineering framework implementation for organizations, which may want to preserve and learn from their dynamically evolving knowledge. These priniciples are based on extendibility and interoperability of models, tools and techniques used within a KBE system. Having these three elements extendable and interoperable can support systematic development of a KBE system along with its adaptation to new knowledge emerging in a dedicated problem domain. Drying is a simultaneous heat and mass transfer operations where heat input from the dryer is supplied to the product to facilitate moisture diffusion from the interior of the product to the surface and it is eventually removed through evaporation. Modelling of drying processes can be carried out by using empirical, theoretical and reaction engineering approaches. Empirical (including semi-empirical) modelling uses thin layer models (Newton, Page, logarithmic and etc.) that can be fitted to any experimental drying data via regression analyses. It is simple to use but lacks theoretical justification. On the other hand, theoretical model uses classical Fick's second law and heat conduction models which is more realistic and fulfill major theoretical considerations in a typical drying operation. Through advancement in drying research, reaction engineering approach enables a normalized activation energy curve is developed from a single accurate drying experiment to predict the moisture content and temperature profiles during drying. In our context, Power Beaming refers to the extraction of useable electrical power from a directed electromagnetic beam. The paper presents an example of a laboratory workshop on the discipline "Wastewater Treatment" for students in the field of "Construction Engineering" under the educational program "Water supply and sanitation". As an example, the process of biosorption wastewater treatment is considered, where powdered activated carbon is used as a sorbent, and the value of chemical oxygen demand is used as an indicator of the cleaning efficiency. As part of the laboratory workshop, several series of experiments were carried out with different concentrations of powdered activated carbon - 0.5 g / l, 1 g / l, 2 g / l and a control sample. Based on the results of the experiments, it was found that the greatest cleaning effect is achieved when the concentration of powdered activated carbon is 1 g / l. The article discussed the formation of a criteria system in the process of new technical solutions synthesis. The formation of a system of criteria is considered for use in morphological approaches. The criteria are formed at the stage of the task statement and the conceptual stage of the design. The article shows the importance of the proposed procedures. Errors at the conceptual design stage can hardly be corrected at the later stages of the design. CaSO4 occurs in various phases. The most common and stable phase is the gypsum phase and anhydrite phase. It is well known that the different phases show different luminescence properties. Ce3+ can be easily induced in the anhydrite phase of CaSO4 at 400°C in a redox environment. However, at various temperatures, the photoluminescence of CaSO4 doped with cerium changes its intensity. The molar concentration of the compound and dopant also plays an important role in forming the distinct phases of CaSO4: Ce. A substantial change in CaSO4:Ce phases occurred when it is prepared in the controlled environment. The computational calculations also show that the concentration of dopants plays a vital role in changing the phase of CaSO4. This also changes the photoluminescence properties. This paper outlines the different practices and the series of operations involved in the precision machining and the metrological inspection of body and spool assembly which constitute the second stage of a Hydraulic Spool Valve. To achieve the stringent valve specification, the valve components need to satisfy the prime requirements of high accuracy in dimensions, form, surface finish and lap condition. The body has many rectangular openings or flow slots which are machined by Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). Further, the body bore is machined precisely by WEDM followed by Honing and Lapping. The spool is thereafter machined and matched to the corresponding dimensions obtained from the body, in order to meet the specified valve performance parameters. The final body and spool assembly has very critical clearance, cylindricity, lap and surface finish. In this paper, the reduced differential transform method (RDTM) is used to obtain approximate solution for a three-dimensional dispersive KdV equation with specified initial conditions and boundary conditions. This method provides the solution in the form of a convergent series with easily calculable terms. Comparing RDTM with other semianalytic methods in the literature shows that the present approach is very simple, effective, powerful and can be easily applied to other linear or nonlinear PDEs in science and engineering. The paper considers the features of engineering thinking, compares various concepts that characterize engineering activities. The authors compare the concepts of technical, economic, research thinking, identifying the principles of engineering thinking. The need for a humanitarian component in engineering thinking is noted. Consistency and multidimensionality are considered by the authors as the most important concepts for the formation of engineering thinking. In conclusion, the authors point out that engineering thinking universally orients the employee when solving different types of tasks and contributes to greater variability in making standard and non-standard decisions in the production process. The paper discusses a topical issue of increasing Nuclear Power Plant operation efficiency. Given an increasing with each new project number of data signals transferred to an operator, the need of a timely and qualitative analysis of incoming data before choosing an optimal switchover variant increases as well. Proper evaluation of current processes and ascertaining the capability for parallel operations demands high-qualification personnel and substantial time expenditure, which undermine existing automation efforts in functional group control, and operations are usually performed sequentially anyway. Of particular note, time required by an operator for identifying, finding solutions for and eliminating incoherencies in transition from one acceptable state to another during a power unit start-up or shutdown. The described factors directly impact power unit out-of-service time, which in turn affects an installed capacity utilization factor, which is a main indicator of equipment operational reliability, and personnel skill level. The article considers the requirements for Virtual Operator digital system development, as the next stage of operator information support software advancement. The results show the importance of creating conditions for a gradual increase of power unit control automation, as well as speeding-up the complex processes by introducing Virtual Operator system, which is expected to reduce the likelihood of an error made by operator when selecting one of a several alternatives for dealing with an incoherence during parallel processes. Day after day the climate change due to global warming converts large areas into arid or semi-arid areas covered with sand dunes and establishing geotechnical structures on it becomes much more difficult. In this paper effect of the addition of two natural materials (bentonite and kaolinite) individually on several engineering properties of dune sand was investigated. Standard compaction, direct shear, and oedometer tests were made and a finite element model of a shallow strip footing was built by the PLAXIS 2D software based on those experimental results. It was found that both bentonite and kaolinite enhanced the dune sand behavior under a shallow strip footing but the bentonite was more effective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Writing clear and informative abstracts is critical. Abstracts are the first thing audience sees before they read the research. This is true for both thesis and research. Therefore, this paper draws attention to the rhetorical moves found in engineering Master and PhD best thesis abstracts. The sample of the study is six thesis abstracts, three PhD and three Master selected from the best thesis award recipients of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). All the thesis are from the engineering discipline and are written in English. The corpus size is 2706 words. The study uses Move analysis guided by CARS Model (2004). It also utilizes three type of analysis namely, frequency count (presence of Move), word count (percentage representation of Move) and Move and step list structure. The findings of the study show that Move 3 is the most utilized Move in these abstracts. Move 3 is present in all of the theses and it represents 81% of the abstract word count in PhD abstracts and 79% of Master abstract. The Move step analysis indicates that PhD thesis abstracts shows a longer and more iterative step list compared to Master thesis abstracts. The finding can be used by instructors for teaching abstracts writing based on best practice and from a more personalized perspective taking into account the discipline and cultural variation of the abstracts. It’s crucial for process engineers to determine optimal value and combination of process parameters in the design of sheet metal forming. The multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) based on Pareto approach and numerical simulation codes were integrated in this paper to fulfill the optimal formability in the sheet metal forming. Three objective functions of local formability on fracture, wrinkling and insufficient stretching were presented based on the strains state at the end of the forming process on the Forming Limit Diagram. By using Pareto-based MOGA, the optimal global formability which represents the trade-off between different local formability was decided. For the efficiency and accuracy of optimization procedure, both inverse and incremental finite element analysis were used to evaluate the value of objective functions. This method was applied to a complex engineering optimization problem: an engine hood outer panel, the optimal blank holder force and draw bead restraining forces were determined to satisfy the given objective functions for the forming of the auto body panels. By careful control of processing, uniform point-array microstructures have been produced in Nb-Ti based APC strands with Cu and Cu-Ni pins. In this paper we use high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) to characterize the deformation of these APC strands over their final re-stack and drawing cycles. The images shown in this paper reveal the extent to which a point array has been maintained throughout processing of this strand. FESEM reveals that the highly cold worked strand is sensitive to low temperature heating with Kirkendall voids being produced in the pinning array at temperatures as low as 188 °C. This paper concerns a boundary element method (BEM) for 2D SH-wave scattering in an elastic layer sandwiched by two half spaces. The BEM is based on the integral equation having a Green’s function for a layer as its integral kernel. Since the Green’s function satisfies the interface conditions, numerical integration in the BEM is necessary only on the surface of scattering objects, thus the computational memory can be saved greatly. On the other hand, numerical evaluation of the Green’s function is critical and burdensome. In this paper, a hybrid ray-mode representation of the Green’s function given by Kamel is employed. Numerical aspects of the representation are discussed in some detail, and the BEM code with the Green’s function is developed thereafter. As a numerical example, SH-wave scattering by a cavity in a layer is considered. This paper presents an engineering based approach for hydraulic risk evaluation. The aim of the research is to identify a criteria for the choice of the simplest and appropriate model to use in different scenarios varying the characteristics of main river channel. The complete flow field, generally expressed in terms of pressure, velocities, accelerations can be described through a three dimensional approach that consider all the flow properties varying in all directions. In many practical applications for river flow studies, however, the greatest changes occur only in two dimensions or even only in one. In these cases the use of simplified approaches can lead to accurate results, with easy to build and faster simulations. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of some advances of nanotechnology in medicine and engineering, exploring typical applications of these emerging technologies. The mechanical properties of such small structures determine their utility and are therefore of considerable interest. Based on nanometer scale tests, a theoretical model to predict the bending strength of a nanobeam is proposed. Adhesive bonding is the most appropriate joining method in construction of composite structures. The use of reliable design and prediction technique will produce better performance of bonded joints. Several papers from recent papers and journals have been reviewed and synthesized to understand the current state of the art in this area. It is done by studying the most relevant analytical solutions for composite adherends with start of reviewing the most fundamental ones involving beam/plate theory. It is then extended to review single lap joint non linearity and failure prediction and finally on the failure prediction on composite single lap joint. This paper reports a pilot study of Context Evaluation using a self-developed questionnaire distributed among engineering undergraduates at a university under study. The study aims to validate the self-developed questionnaires used in the Context evaluation, a component in the CIPP Model. The Context evaluation assesses background information for needs, assets, problems and opportunities relevant to beneficiaries of the study in a defined environment. Through the questionnaire, background information for the assessment of needs, assets and problems related to the engineering undergraduates' perceptions on the teaching and learning of technical oral presentation skills was collected and analysed. The questionnaire was developed using 5-points Likert scale to measure the constructs under study. They were distributed to 100 respondents with 79 returned. The respondents consisted of engineering undergraduates studied at various faculties at one technical university in Malaysia. The descriptive analysis of data for each item which makes up the construct for Context evaluation is found to be high. This implied that engineering undergraduates showed high interest in teaching and learning of technical oral presentation skills, thus their needs are met. Also, they agreed that assets and facilities are conducive to their learning. In conclusion, the context evaluation involving needs and assets factors are both considerably important; their needs are met and the assets and facilities do support their technical oral presentation skills learning experience.
