Sexual minority men (gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men; SMM) in Nigeria are disproportionately affected by HIV compared to heterosexual men. There is a dearth of research on the correlates of antiretroviral therapy (ART) non-adherence and correlates in both groups. The current study examined the associations of ART non-adherence with sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics among a sample of Nigerian heterosexual and SMM. Between March and September 2014, we surveyed 120 SMM and 108 heterosexual men receiving ART in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria. We specified univariate and multivariable linear regression models to examine correlates of ART non-adherence. We found that 50.8% and 29.6% of sexual minority and heterosexual men respectively self-reported ART non-adherence which was significantly associated with psychosocial factors such as stigma, depressive symptoms, and suicidality. National responses should be improved and accelerated to meet the target of ending the Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by 2030. In the Republic of Cyprus, Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), accounting approximately for half of all annual HIV diagnoses. This study assesses the evolution of HIV incidence in MSM in Cyprus until 2030 using a model calibrated to Cypriot epidemiological data. Four scenarios were examined: status quo, two scenarios focusing on introducing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and a 90% HIV incidence reduction scenario. Reaching only the 95-95-95 HIV cascade of care targets among MSM would reduce HIV incidence by 48.6% by 2030 compared to 2015. Initiating a PrEP intervention only for high risk MSM would cause a modest further reduction in HIV incidence. To meet the 90% reduction target, PrEP should be expanded to both high and medium risk MSM and, after 2025, behavioral interventions should be implemented so as high-risk MSM gradually move to the medium-risk category. Cyprus will not reach the HIV incidence reduction target by 2030 unless PrEP is gradually promoted and delivered to all high and medium risk MSM along with awareness and behavioral interventions. Contemporary evidence is needed to assess whether the prevalence of depression remains high among people living with HIV in the United Kingdom despite recent efforts to improve patients' mental health, and if depression is negatively associated with individuals' adherence to antiretroviral therapy. In a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional clinic-based survey of alcohol consumption and associated health behaviour among people living with HIV in London, of the 221 respondents, 106 (48%) had poor self-reported adherence to antiretroviral therapy (CASE Index) and 69 (31%) screened positive for depression (PHQ-9). Poor self-reported adherence to ART was 72% higher among participants who screened positive for depression in comparison with participants who screened negative. Respondents who were younger, unemployed, and reported problematic drug use were more likely to screen positive for depression. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence remains a challenge among young men who have sex with men (MSM). We developed and tested a smartphone application (“app”), “DOT Diary”, which combines automated directly observed therapy (DOT) with information about PrEP protection levels, pill-taking reminders, a sexual behavior diary, and a PrEP dosing calendar. To contextualize trial results, we qualitatively explored participants’ app experiences. The trial enrolled 100 young MSM in San Francisco and Atlanta. Participants were randomized 2:1 to DOT Diary versus standard-of-care and followed for 24 weeks. Interviews were conducted with 24 intervention participants. Data were analyzed using a memo-writing approach. Most expressed overall satisfaction with the app (“it was good for its purpose”), despite concerns about technical glitches. The most popular app features were the monthly calendar showing days PrEP was taken and information about level of protection based on pills taken. The DOT component helped participants establish PrEP routines. The reminders were “annoying but effective” at motivating dosing. Opinions about the sexual behavior diary varied. Overall, DOT Diary was acceptable; participants were willing to use it daily to record pill-taking. A worrying phenomenon has emerged recently: more people are deliberately avoiding rather than seeking information regarding acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This is the first study to explore behaviors related to AIDS information avoidance and the potential influential factors among older men who have sex with men (MSM). We enrolled 11 older MSM from Wuhan, the largest city in central China, from January to March 2023 using a phenomenological method. This qualitative research was conducted using face-to-face semi-structured interviews. AIDS information avoidance was commonly observed among the respondents. Behaviors related to AIDS information avoidance included avoiding AIDS-related information, ignoring known AIDS information, and avoiding medical care. The main factors associated with AIDS information avoidance included information overload, high-risk sexual behaviors, over-optimism, fear of disclosure, and age. China should provide AIDS information in a manner suitable for older MSM, pay more attention to MSM over the age of 70 years, those who are not open about their sexual orientation and those who are too optimistic, and strengthen the censorship of AIDS information. This study aimed to evaluate the interest in event-driven PrEP (ED-PrEP) among men who have sex with men (MSM) using daily PrEP in Mexico's PrEP demonstration project between 2019 and 2020. We compared participants interested or not in ED-PrEP during their first-month visit and identified associated factors. Of 1,021 MSM attending their first-month visit, 7% had previous knowledge of ED-PrEP, but 40% were interested in ED-PrEP. However, over 50% perceived the scheme as less protective than daily PrEP. Having doubts about ED-PrEP’s level of protection was related to less interest in the scheme (aOR = 0.11; CI = 0.07–0.18), just like reporting perceived barriers such as having frequent sex (aOR = 0.06; CI = 0.03–0.14), unplanned sex (aOR = 0.17; CI = 0.11–0.27), forgetting the medicine (aOR = 0.06; CI = 0.03–0.12), or difficulty carrying the medicine (aOR =   0.13; CI = 0.07–0.25). Finally, reporting not taking PrEP for >20 days in the last month (aOR = 0.05; CI = 0.01–0.27) diminished interest in ED-PrEP. In conclusion, few MSM daily PrEP users knew about ED-PrEP yet many were interested in it, suggesting the importance of awareness campaigns regarding ED-PrEP’s effectiveness. The lack of interest in ED-PrEP among participants with poor adherence to daily PrEP indicates that they might prefer long-acting PrEP or HIV prevention strategies without medication. This study aimed to measure the pooled estimate of willingness to use HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) (WTUP) among PrEP-naïve United States (U.S.)-based men who have sex with men (MSM). PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched. The search strategy contained the keyword willingness and interest and the MeSH terms for HIV and PrEP. Articles were included if they were published between January 2005 and May 2022, reported quantitative data on WTUP among PrEP-naïve US-based MSM, and were available as full text in English. Meta-analysis was conducted to assess the pooled effect size of WTUP prevalence using a random-effects model, heterogeneity in the pooled estimate was assessed, and subgroup analyzes were conducted. Fifteen studies were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Meta-analysis revealed a pooled prevalence proportion for WTUP of 0.58 (95% CI 0.54–0.61) (or 58 out of 100) among PrEP-naïve MSM. High inter-study heterogeneity (Q = 548.10, df = 19, p < 0.01, I2 = 96.53, τ2 = 0.09) was observed. Age of the study sample and region where the data were collected significantly moderated the pooled WTUP estimate. When participants enrolled in an HIV prevention trial hold a preventive misconception (PM) – expectations that experimental interventions will confer protection from HIV infection – they may engage in behaviors that increase their risk of acquiring HIV. This can raise ethical concerns about whether those enrolled in the trial understand the nature of participation and their safety. Consequently, we systematically evaluated the prevalence of PM and its association with risk behaviors in a trial examining three candidate regimens for oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in which all participants received at least one antiretroviral agent. Overall, trial participants exhibited relatively high preventive expectations that may be associated with an increase in risk behaviors among men who have sex with men. In addition, we identified substantial site variability in PM that necessitates future research to uncover its source. This will allow appropriate measures to be taken to mitigate PM and help ensure that participants have an accurate understanding of the potential risks and benefits of trial participation throughout the course of a trial. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV. Given that over 70% of MSM meet sexual partners via dating apps, such apps may be an effective platform for promoting HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. We aimed to describe preferences among MSM for PrEP advertisements displayed on dating apps. We conducted individual in-depth interviews with 16 MSM recruited from a mobile sexual health unit in Boston, Massachusetts. Two focus groups were also held: one with mobile unit staff (N = 3) and one with mobile unit users (N = 3). Content analysis was used to identify themes related to advertisement content and integration with app use. Mean participant age was 28 (SD 6.8); 37% identified as White and 63% as Latinx. 21% of interviews were conducted in Spanish. Preferences were organized around four themes: (1) relevant and relatable advertisements, (2) expansion of target audiences to promote access, (3) concise and captivating advertisements, and (4) PrEP advertisements and services as options, not obligations. MSM are supportive of receiving information about PrEP on dating apps, but feel that existing advertisements require modification to better engage viewers. Young MSM (YMSM), aged 15–24, account for nearly half of new HIV infections in Thailand. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective prevention medicine for populations at substantial HIV risk, yet YMSM frequently have suboptimal uptake of and adherence to PrEP. We conducted 35 in-depth interviews with YMSM to explore barriers and facilitators of both PrEP initiation and adherence. Interviews also elicited the perceptions and experiences of healthcare providers (HCPs) working with YMSM at three clinics in Bangkok. Primary barriers to PrEP initiation were limited accessibility, insufficient knowledge, and efficacy concerns; HCPs identified no-to-low self-perception of HIV risk, pre-existing health problems, fears of side effects, and living in distant provinces as barriers to PrEP initiation. YMSM primarily reported PrEP information and self-perceptions of elevated HIV risk as facilitators to PrEP initiation. Additionally, forgetfulness and low HIV risk awareness were common barriers to PrEP adherence. Reminders were a prominent facilitator of PrEP adherence alongside disclosure to close relationships, the routinization of regimens, and convenient facilities. HCPs regarded counseling as the leading facilitator of PrEP adherence. By understanding the barriers/facilitators of PrEP use, the current study seeks to help develop evidence-informed PrEP intervention programs among YMSM while considering cultural sensitivity. Black sexual minority men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States are at disparate risk for contracting HIV infection, but pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use is suboptimal. Social network methods were used to recruit a community sample of racial minority MSM and transgender women (TGW) in two Midwestern US cities. 250 PrEP-eligible (HIV-negative) participants completed measures assessing current and intended PrEP use; demographic characteristics; PrEP knowledge, attitudes, norms, stigma, and self-efficacy; and structural barriers to PrEP. Multivariate analyses established predictors of current and intended PrEP use. Only 12% of participants reported currently using PrEP, which was associated with greater PrEP knowledge and not having a main partner, with trends for greater PrEP use by younger participants and those with partners living with HIV. Among participants not currently on PrEP, strength of PrEP use intentions was associated with higher PrEP knowledge, PrEP descriptive social norms, and PrEP use self-efficacy. This study is among few to directly compare Black who have adopted PrEP with those who have not. Its findings underscore the potential benefits of employing social network approaches for strengthening PrEP use peer norms, increasing PrEP knowledge and self-efficacy, and optimizing PrEP uptake among racial minority MSM and TGW. The HIV epidemics in Cambodia is concentrated in key populations (KPs). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been officially approved in the country since 2019. However, its use may still be controversial after a PrEP clinical trial was interrupted in Cambodia after being deemed unethical in 2004. In this context, it was necessary to evaluate PrEP acceptability and administration preferences of KPs in Cambodia, with a view to increasing roll-out and uptake. We conducted a qualitative study in 2022 comprising six focus groups and four semi-structured individual interviews with transgender women, men who have sex with men, male entertainment workers, venue-based female entertainment workers (FEW), street-based FEW, and PrEP users who participated in a PrEP pilot study that started in 2019. Overall, KPs positively perceived PrEP, with some reservations. They preferred daily, community-based PrEP to event-driven, hospital-based PrEP, and highlighted that injectable PrEP would be a potential option if it became available in Cambodia. We recommend (i) proposing different PrEP regimens and PrEP delivery-models to broaden PrEP acceptability and adherence in Cambodia (ii) increasing the number of community-based organisations and improving the services they offer, (iii) rolling out injectable PrEP when it becomes officially available, and (iv) improving PrEP side effects information. As the prospect of an HIV cure is gaining prominence, engaging key populations affected by an HIV cure becomes essential. This study examined the engagement of HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) and/or partners of people with HIV (PHIV) in the Netherlands. Interviews were conducted with 19 MSM not in relationships with a partner with HIV and 16 partners of PHIV and were thematically analyzed. Perspectives on the importance of an HIV cure were shaped by the perceived severity of HIV and the level of susceptibility to the virus. Despite concerns about potential new HIV infections and treatment intensity, most participants believed that an HIV cure could reduce HIV burden. Both HIV eradication and HIV suppression were regarded as acceptable outcomes. Engagement was demonstrated through actions like accessing information, participating in research, and showing support for partners or community members involved in HIV cure research. In conclusion, we found that most participants were engaged due to their heightened perception of HIV's severity. However, this engagement tended to remain passive due to their perceived low susceptibility to HIV, resulting in a scenario where the perceived importance of an HIV cure is high, while personal relevance remains low. Long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (LAI-PrEP) is efficacious in preventing HIV among men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) and will be soon available in Europe. This study investigated the intention and preference to use LAI-PrEP among MSM in the Netherlands by employing a diffusion of innovation approach. This study had a cross-sectional design nested within a cohort study established in 2017 to understand oral PrEP use among MSM. 309 MSM completed the survey on their awareness, interest, intention, and preference for LAI-PrEP in June 2022. Among them, 83% showed high/very-high interest in, and 63% showed high/very-high intention to use LAI-PrEP. A repeated innovator effect from the early adopters to LAI-PrEP was not observed. Early adopters did not show increased intention to use LAI-PrEP compared to other MSM subgroups, but neither did PrEP-naïve nor PrEP-discontinued MSM. However, among the 218 current oral PrEP users, suboptimal adherence was associated with preference for LAI-PrEP but not with intention to use it. In conclusion, our findings indicated that an effective, available, and affordable LAI-PrEP would be welcomed in the Netherlands, but that its introduction may not significantly expand PrEP coverage. The HIV epidemic continues to expand in Russia, with suboptimal levels of care uptake. This qualitative study aimed to characterize social capital resources and lived stigma experiences, coping, and disclosure among care-nonadherent men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in Russia. Twenty-five HIV-positive MSM – recruited online – completed in-depth interviews over Zoom, with data analyzed using MAXQDA software. Stigma was more likely to be encountered in interactions with persons with whom social ties were weaker such as medical providers and relatives, particularly males. Close friends – often other HIV-positive MSM and female relatives – were the most supportive and least stigmatizing. Similar persons were most often considered for HIV serostatus disclosure. Coping strategies to reduce the impact of stigma included ignoring stigmatizing experiences, seeking support from members of one's social circle, minimizing contact with stigmatizing persons, seeking new relationships with persons who are also HIV-positive, proactively reducing stigma through involvement in advocacy roles, and correcting myths and educating others about HIV infection. These findings underscore the need for interventions to assist HIV-positive MSM in building accepting social capital resources to reduce the impact of stigma and to build support within their social networks, often with other HIV-positive MSM. Screening for depression may identify persons for HIV prevention services and to ensure linkage to care for ART and mental health. We assessed factors associated with depressive symptoms using multiple logistic regression among 15- to 29-year-old gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women who have sex with men (TGW) attending HIV prevention clinics at Silom Community Clinic or Bangrak Hospital in Bangkok or Rainbow Clinic in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand. We defined depressive symptoms as a self-report of feelings of sadness that impacted daily life in the past one month. Among 192 MSM, 51 TGW, and 11 gender-questioning persons screened: 12.6% met the criteria for depression; 5.9% had new HIV diagnosis. Independently associated factors which increase the risk of depressive symptoms included: studying in a private school (AOR 7.17); experiencing any type of bullying (AOR 2.8); having a partner with HIV (AOR 4.1); and learning about the study from sources other than a friend (AOR 4.2). Given many youths had depressive symptoms, screening for depression and connection to mental health services would be beneficial in sexual health settings to meet the needs of HIV-vulnerable youth. We described the longitudinal changes in sexual behaviour and associated factors among newly diagnosed with HIV men who have sex with men participating in a prospective observational study from a London HIV clinic (2015–2018). Participants self-completed questionnaires at baseline, months 3 and 12. Information collected included socio-demographic, sexual behaviour, health, lifestyle and social support. Trends in sexual behaviours over one year following diagnosis and associated factors were assessed using generalized estimating equations with logit link. Condomless sex (CLS) dropped from 62.2% at baseline to 47.6% at month-three but increased again to 61.8% at month-12 (p-trend = 0.790). Serodiscordant-CLS increased between month-three and month-12 (from 13.1% to 35.6%, p-trend < 0.001). The prevalence of serodiscordant-CLS with high risk of transmitting to their partners at month-three was 10.7%. CLS was higher among men who reported recreational drug use (adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) 3.03, 95%CI 1.47–6.24, p = 0.003), those with undetectable viral load (aOR 2.17, 95%CI 1.22-3.84, p = 0.008) and those who agreed with a statement "condoms are not necessary when HIV viral load is undetectable" (aOR 3.41, 95%CI 1.58–7.38, p = 0.002). Timely HIV diagnosis and medical engagement are crucial for effective viral load suppression and treatment as prevention. However, significant delays persist, particularly in Africa, including Ghana. This study focused on Ghanaian men whose route of exposure to HIV was through same-gender sexual contact (MSM), a group disproportionately impacted by HIV. Using structured surveys, we investigated the sociodemographic factors associated with late HIV diagnosis, a topic with limited existing research. Results indicate that older age groups were associated with an increased risk of late diagnosis compared to the 18–24 age group. Among the demographic variables studied, only age showed a consistent association with late HIV diagnosis. This study underscores the importance of targeted interventions to address HIV diagnosis disparities among MSM in Ghana, particularly for older age groups. The findings emphasize the need for tailored interventions addressing age-related disparities in timely diagnosis and engagement with medical services among this population. The National surveillance data showed that homosexual transmission played a considerable role in new HIV infections in China. The emphasis on antiretroviral therapy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission provided chances for reproduction among people living with HIV/AIDS. Issues of fertility desire have a paucity of data among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). This cross-sectional study has assessed fertility attitudes and associated factors, as well as the reproductive knowledge among HIV-positive MSM. Analysis was mainly based on the multinomial regression model. The study included 129 participants, and almost all of the participants (96.1%) were between 18 and 30 years old and 82.2% of them were single. About 35.6% expressed a fertility desire. MSM without siblings tended to have fertility desire (OR = 0.236, 95%CI: 0.078∼0.712, p = 0.010). Surrogacy (36.4%) was the most desired method among the 86 respondents who had the desire or did not make a decision. While the accuracy of the reproductive knowledge was only 69.6%. In summary, we recommend that providers offer much more professional information and develop assisted reproductive technology to meet the reproductive aspirations of HIV-positive MSM. To investigate the prevalence of male circumcision and the willingness to undergo male circumcision and influencing factors among MSM in Maanshan City, we conducted a cross-sectional study from June 2016 to December 2019. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) was used to recruit participants. Influential factors of willingness to accept circumcision were identified by a multivariable logistic regression model. The multivariable logistic regression model revealed that five variables were independent influential factors for willingness to participate. The factors include that used condoms during last anal intercourse (OR = 1.87, 95% CI:1.03–3.41, P = 0.04), sex with female sex partners (OR = 0.499, 95% CI:0.298–0.860, P = 0.012, level of education (junior college: OR = 0.413, 95% CI:0.200–0.854, P = 0.017; bachelor's degree or higher: OR = 0.442, 95% CI:0.208–0.938, P = 0.033), condom use during oral sex in the last six months (OR = 4.20, 95% CI:1.47–12.0, P = 0.007) and level of knowledge of PrEP (OR = 5.09, 95% CI:1.39–18.7, P = 0.014). Given the willingness of MSM to accept circumcision was low in China, establishing a proper understanding of circumcision is essential if it is to be used as a strategy to prevent HIV infection among MSM. We conducted a parallel-group randomized controlled trial in three HIV clinics in Mexico to evaluate a user-centred habit-formation intervention to improve ART adherence among MSM living with HIV. We randomized 74 participants to the intervention group and 77 to the control group. We measured adherence at one, four, and ten months through medication possession ratio and self-reported adherence. Additionally, we measured viral load, CD4 cell count, major depression disorder symptoms, and alcohol and substance use disorder at baseline, fourth and tenth months. We found no statistically significant effect on adherence between groups. However, the intervention demonstrated positive results in major depression disorder symptoms (21% vs. 6%, p = 0.008) and substance use disorder (11% vs. 1%, p = 0.018) in the fourth month. The latter is relevant because, in addition to its direct benefit, it might also improve the chances of maintaining adequate adherence in the long term. New HIV infections disproportionately affect young men who have sex with men (YMSM). PrEP is effective in preventing HIV acquisition; however, adherence is critical and is often suboptimal among YMSM. Interventions addressing the unique PrEP adherence challenges faced by YMSM are needed. We conducted qualitative interviews with 20 HIV-negative, YMSM (ages 15-24) with a PrEP indication and 11 healthcare professionals to inform adaption of a PrEP adherence intervention (Life-Steps for PrEP) for YMSM. We explored environmental, healthcare, and individual factors influencing uptake, adherence, attitudes, and perspectives (including desired modifications) on the Life-Steps intervention. Interviews were analyzed using content analysis. Of YMSM study participants (mean age 21.6) 55% were White, 15% Hispanic, and 5% Black. Most YMSM were PrEP-experienced (70%). Healthcare professionals (6 prescribers, 1 nurse, 2 health educators, 2 other/unspecified) averaged 6.9 years of experience caring for YMSM. All described stigma as a barrier to PrEP; YMSM expressed concern around being perceived as "risky" and concern about inadvertent PrEP disclosure if family/friends found their medication, or if parental insurance was used. Difficulty with planning for potential adherence challenges were identified by both groups. YMSM highlighted benefits of a nurse-led intervention (i.e., adding "legitimacy"), but stressed need for nonjudgmental, "savvy" interventionists. YMSM expressed a desire for comprehensive YMSM-specific sexual health information. These findings informed modification and expansion of Life-Steps content. Sustained viral suppression is one of the four strategies in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) plan to end the HIV epidemic in the United States. Individuals living with HIV must understand their viral load accurately for this strategy to be effective. We conducted cross-sectional analyses using baseline data from the NNHIV longitudinal study among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in New York City to identify factors associated with concordant knowledge between self-reported and lab-confirmed viral load. Of 164 Black and/or Latine participants, 67% (n = 110) reported that their viral load was undetectable, however lab tests showed only 44% (n = 72) had an undetectable viral load (<20 copies/ml). Overall, 62% of the sample (n = 102) had concordant HIV viral load knowledge (agreement of self-reported and lab viral load). In multivariable regression, those with unstable housing (PR = 0.52, 0.30-0.92) and those who had higher levels of beliefs of racism in medicine scale (PR = 0.76, 0.59–0.97) were less likely to have concordant knowledge. Our study underscores the need for implementing measures to improve viral load knowledge, U = U messaging, and strategies to achieve and maintain undetectable viral load status to reduce the burden of HIV at the population level. Substance use in people with HIV (PWH) negatively impacts antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. However, less is known about this in the current treatment era and the impact of specific substances or severity of substance use. We examined the associations of alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drug use (methamphetamine/crystal, cocaine/crack, illicit opioids/heroin) and their severity of use with adherence using multivariable linear regression in adult PWH in care between 2016 and 2020 at 8 sites across the US. PWH completed assessments of alcohol use severity (AUDIT-C), drug use severity (modified ASSIST), and ART adherence (visual analogue scale). Among 9400 PWH, 16% reported current hazardous alcohol use, 31% current marijuana use, and 15% current use of ≥1 illicit drugs. In multivariable analysis, current methamphetamine/crystal use, particularly common among men who had sex with men, was associated with 10.1% lower mean ART adherence (p < 0.001) and 2.6% lower adherence per 5-point higher severity of use (ASSIST score) (p < 0.001). Current and more severe use of alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drugs were also associated with lower adherence in a dose-dependent manner. Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) and transgender women (BTW) are disproportionately affected by incarceration and HIV. We assessed factors associated with HIV testing and viral suppression among 176 incarcerated BMSM and BTW in Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; and Houston, TX. In multivariable logistic regression, having a sexual orientation of bisexual, heterosexual, or other vs. gay or same-gender loving was associated with higher odds of testing in custody (aOR 8.97; 95% CI 1.95 - 41.24). Binge drinking (aOR 0.19; 95% CI 0.04 - 0.92) and being unemployed prior to incarceration (aOR 0.03; 95% CI 0.00 - 0.23) were associated with lower odds of testing; participants in Los Angeles were also more likely to be tested than those in Chicago. Being housed in protective custody (aOR 3.12; 95% CI 1.09-9.59) and having a prescription for ART prior to incarceration (aOR 2.58; 95% CI 1.01-6.73) were associated with higher odds of viral suppression when adjusted for site and duration of incarceration, though the associations were not statistically significant in the full multivariable model. Future research should examine structural and process level factors that impact engagement in HIV testing and treatment among detained BMSM and BTW.

Existing HIV prevention interventions, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and behavioral health treatments inadequately reach Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) in the US. This study involved formative research to inform the content, design, and implementation of a scalable, low resource implementation strategy – peer ambassador stories – stories from peers to normalize using PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health treatment. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 LMSM to elucidate their content, design, and implementation preferences for peer ambassador stories. Men were asked about story prompts, story contributor characteristics, story platform features, design preferences, and recommendations for enhancing the adoption and use of the peer ambassador technology platform among LMSM. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed via rapid qualitative analysis. Qualitative analyses identified 14 themes within 4 pre-specified domains. Collectively, the themes unified around the central concept that technology-delivered peer ambassador stories require a personalized, relational, culturally relevant touch to be acceptable and appropriate for LMSM. This study suggests that disseminating peer ambassador stories using electronic platforms and audio/video formats may enhance the reach of services and if they are personalized, relational, and culturally relevant. Uptake and retention in clinical care for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is suboptimal, particularly among young African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Deep South. We conducted a two-phase study to develop and implement an intervention to increase PrEP persistence. In Phase I, we conducted focus groups with 27 young African American MSM taking PrEP at a community health center in Jackson, Mississippi to elicit recommendations for the PrEP persistence intervention. We developed an intervention based on recommendations in Phase I, and in Phase II, ten participants were enrolled in an open pilot. Eight participants completed Phase II study activities, including a single intervention session, phone call check-ins, and four assessments (Months 0, 1, 3, and 6). Exit interviews demonstrated a high level of acceptability and satisfaction with the intervention. To prevent hepatitis C virus (HCV) reinfection, within the Swiss HCVree Trial, a preventive risk reduction intervention was implemented alongside curative treatment. Formative qualitative research identified three response patterns to the intervention. This mixed-methods study's aim was to cross-validate group differences in (a) the content of sexual risk reduction goals set during intervention and (b) the extent of their behavioural change in condomless anal intercourse with non-steady partners (nsCAI), sexualised and intravenous drug use at start and six-month post-intervention. Qualitative thematic analysis was used to summarise goal setting domains. Quantitative descriptive analysis was used to evaluate group differences based on assumptions of the group descriptions. Results largely confirmed assumptions on inter-group response differences in goal setting and behaviour: as expected group 1 Avoid risks showed the lowest HCV risk profile with changes in nsCAI. Group 2 Minimize-risks and Group 3 Accept-risks showed unchanged nsCAI. Group 3 had the highest HCV risk profile. Differences in their goal preferences (1: condom use; 2 reduction blood exposure; 3 safer dating) highlight diversity in attitudes to behavioural change. Our results improve understanding of variability in intervention responses such as changes in attitudes and behaviour. This provides evidence for intervention tailoring and outcome measurement. Despite PrEP being available and free of charge in France, a gap remains between the estimated number of men who have sex with men (MSM) with high-risk exposure to HIV and the number of MSM PrEP users. The objective of this study is to identify factors associated with non-intention to use PrEP among PrEP-eligible and PrEP-aware MSM in France, "non-intenders". European MSM Internet Survey (EMIS)-2017 was a cross-sectional survey conducted among MSM concerning their HIV prevention needs. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with "non-intenders". Compared to PrEP users, factors associated with non-intention to use PrEP were: age (aOR[95%CI] = 3.80[2.21;6.53]); not being vaccinated against hepatitis B (2.20[1.45;3.34]); self-efficacy (1.84[1.29;2.60]); lower knowledge about on-demand PrEP (11.48[7.37;17.87]) and daily PrEP (2.58[1.27;5.25]); not having a PrEP discussion at a hospital (12.39[8.90;17.27]) or at a community service/drop-in (4.93[3.48;6.97]); living in a department with few PrEP access points (1.70[1.10;2.63]). On-demand PrEP may meet the prevention needs of "non-intenders" who have lower HIV risk perception. Increasing communication from health providers and community health workers to all MSM is needed. Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) are at particular risk for HIV, and knowing one's HIV status is key to preventing new HIV infections. Data were derived from a community-based study involving 250 YBMSM to examine the relationships between race-based discrimination experienced in healthcare settings, anticipated HIV stigma, household income and lifetime HIV testing. Lifetime HIV testing was regressed on racial discrimination in healthcare settings, anticipated HIV stigma, and income, and a significant 3-way interaction was found. To help interpret the 3-way interaction, lifetime HIV testing was regressed on racial discrimination in healthcare settings and anticipated HIV stigma in two separate models; with low-income and higher-income YBMSM. Anticipated HIV stigma was found to predict HIV testing among low-income YBMSM. A significant interaction was detected such that low-income YBMSM with low levels of anticipated HIV stigma were more likely to get tested for HIV regardless of experiences with healthcare discrimination, while low-income YBMSM who reported greater anticipated HIV stigma and more experiences of healthcare discrimination were less likely to get tested for HIV. Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) are at higher risk of HIV transmission than any other group; however, their uptake of the highly effective HIV prevention medication, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), is low. In collaboration with a communitybased organization in Atlanta, Georgia, we explored ten HIV-negative BMSM's willingness to obtain PrEP in pharmacies using standard open-ended and vignette qualitative methods. Three overarching themes were identified: privacy, patient-pharmacist interactions, and HIV/STI screening. While open-ended questions allowed participants to provide broad answers on their willingness to receive prevention services at a pharmacy, the vignette drew out specific responses to facilitate in-pharmacy PrEP delivery. Using both openended questions and vignette data collection strategies, BMSM reported high willingness to screen for and uptake PrEP in pharmacies. However, the vignette method allowed for greater depth. Open-ended questions elicited responses that highlighted general barriers and facilitators of PrEP dispensing in pharmacies. However, the vignette allowed participants to customize a plan of action that would best fit their needs. Vignette methods are underutilized in HIV research and may be helpful in supplementing standard open-ended interview questions to uncovering unknown challenges about health behaviors and obtain more robust data on highly sensitive research topics in HIV research. The objective of this study is to synthesize the existing empirical literature and perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the relationship between HIV disclosure and engagement in the HIV care continuum among men who have sex with men living with HIV. Twenty-three studies were included, with thirteen quantitative studies and ten qualitative studies. Meta-analytic techniques were used to compute and aggregate effect sizes (odds ratio [OR] and their confidence intervals [95%CI]) for the quantitative studies and a thematic analysis was employed for qualitative studies. Given the small number of eligible studies, meta-analysis was only conducted for the linkage to care outcome, where a positive association was observed from the pooled estimation (OR = 1.51, 95%CI [1.15, 1.99]). Regarding ART initiation, retention in care, and viral suppression outcomes, most of the individual studies revealed a positive association between HIV disclosure and these outcomes. Thematic analysis from qualitative studies complemented the quantitative findings by incorporating the approaching and avoidance motivations underlying the relationship between non-HIV disclosure and the participation in HIV care continuum. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with adverse mental and physical outcomes among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. Few studies focus on psychological IPV, such as verbal threats. This study examined the associations between different forms of IPV and depression and CD4+ cell count, with depression as a mediator for the association between IPV and CD4+ cell count. Data for these analyses were derived from a larger cross-sectional study on HIV-HCV co-infection among MSM in Shanghai, China (N = 1623). We estimated the average causal mediation effects (ACME) and average direct effects (ADE) through three steps. About 16% of participants experienced IPV, with forced sex (7%), verbal threats (5%), and thrown objects (4%) being most common. Verbal threats showed the strongest link with depression and low CD4+ cell count. Depression fully mediated the relationship between verbal abuse and low CD4+ cell count, suggesting it as a potential pathway between psychological IPV and poorer HIV-related health outcomes. More research on psychological IPV is warranted to examine its health impacts. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a promising HIV prevention method. However, the rollout of PrEP among men who have sex with men (MSM) is facing challenges. This study sought to understand PrEP acceptability and service use challenges among MSM in China. The study was conducted in 2018 in Guangdong Province using a mixed-methods approach. Among 489 HIV-negative MSM who completed an online survey, 374 (76.5%) had heard of PrEP before. The most common PrEP information sources were internet/social media (32.1%) and community-based organizations (30.4%). Two-thirds (n=328) of the MSM would accept PrEP even the protective efficacy is less than 100%, 60.1% (n=294) expressed willingness to use PrEP once it is approved in China, and 59.3% (n=290) were willing to pay out of pocket. Employment, disclosure of MSM status, and mental health issues were associated with PrEP acceptability. In-depth interviews with 30 MSM revealed that high cost, low accessibility, and stigma in clinic settings were barriers to PrEP using. Primary care-based PrEP services were acceptable, but patients' confidentiality was a concern. PrEP promotion efforts should address social and mental health challenges among MSM and mobilize primary care systems and community-based organizations to achieve the best result.

Availability of HIV self-testing may increase HIV testing frequency among men who have sex with men (MSM). It is unclear, however, if self-testing may impact HIV-related sexual behaviors among MSM, including HIV status disclosure and condom use. We conducted a mixed methods analysis of changes in HIV-related behaviors after HIV self-testing introduction, using data from 110 MSM participating in a feasibility and acceptability study of HIV self-testing in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. We found increased HIV status disclosure from study participants to sexual partners after HIV self-testing introduction, from 61.8% at baseline to 75.5% at 6-month follow-up (p = 0.04), but decreased condom use with female partners (p = 0.03). Qualitative interviews reveal that some participants used test results to inform condom use. Distribution of self-testing kits can improve mutual disclosure, but should be accompanied by information stressing that the tests may not detect early HIV infections or other sexually transmitted infections.

Multiple rural states and communities experience elevated rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), often associated with diminished healthcare access and increased drug use. Though a substantial proportion of rural populations are sexual and gender minorities (SGM), little is known of this group regarding substance use, healthcare utilization, and HIV transmission behaviors. During May–July 2021, we surveyed 398 individuals across 22 rural Illinois counties. Participants included cisgender heterosexual males (CHm) and females (CHf) (n = 110); cisgender non-heterosexual males and females (C-MSM and C-WSW; n = 264); and transgender individuals (TG; n = 24). C-MSM participants were more likely to report daily-to-weekly alcohol and illicit drug use prescription medication misuse (versus CHf; aOR = 5.64 [2.37–13.41], 4.42 [1.56–12.53], and 29.13 [3.80–223.20], respectively), and C-MSM participants more frequently reported traveling to meet with romantic/sex partners. Further, more C-MSM and TG than C-WSW reported healthcare avoidance and denial due to their orientation/identity (p < 0.001 and p = 0.011, respectively); 47.6% of C-MSM and 58.3% of TG had not informed their provider about their orientation/identity; and only 8.6% of C-MSM reported ever receiving a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) recommendation. More work is needed to explore the substance use and sexual behaviors of rural SGM, as well as their healthcare interactions, to better target health and PrEP engagement campaigns. HIV prevention for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and transgender women (TGW) is critical to reducing health disparities and population HIV prevalence. To understand if different types of stigma impact engagement with HIV prevention services, we assessed associations between stigmas and use of HIV prevention services offered through an HIV prevention intervention. This analysis included 201 GBMSM and TGW enrolled in a prospective cohort offering a package of HIV prevention interventions. Participants completed a baseline survey that included four domains of sexual identity/behavior stigma, HIV-related stigma, and healthcare stigma. Impact of stigma on PrEP uptake and the number of drop-in visits was assessed. No domain of stigma was associated with PrEP uptake. In bivariate analysis, increased enacted sexual identity stigma increased number of drop-in visits. In a logistic regression analysis constrained to sexual identity stigma, enacted stigma was associated with increased drop-in visits (aIRR = 1.30, [95% CI: 1.02, 1.65]). Participants reporting higher enacted stigma were modestly more likely to attend additional services and have contact with the study clinics and staff. GBMSM and TGW with higher levels of enacted stigma may seek out sensitized care after negative experiences in their communities or other healthcare settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our objective was to assess factors associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with or those not living with HIV in Nigeria. A cross-sectional subset of adult MSM in the ongoing TRUST/RV368 HIV prevention and treatment study were recruited and completed the World Health Organization quality of life in HIV infection (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire. The tool comprises physical health, psychological health, social relationships and environmental health domains from which scores were extracted. T-tests were used to compare mean HRQoL scores between participants living with or those not living with HIV and among persons living with HIV who had been on antiretroviral therapy for ≥1 year or <1 year. Of 322 study participants, 186 (57.8%) were living with HIV. The mean scores were significantly lower for participants living with HIV as compared to those not living with HIV in physical health, psychological health and social relationship domains. Among persons living with HIV and taking ART, scores were significantly lower for those whose duration was <1 year as compared to ≥1 year regarding physical health and psychological health. Loss to follow-up (LTFU) and interruption of antiretroviral therapy (ART) are associated with worse outcomes in people with HIV (PWH). Little is known about gaps in the continuum of care. We conducted a retrospective cohort study including adult PWH with at least one clinical visit during 2000-2017. Three groups of care were defined: those constantly retained in care (constantly-RIC), definitively LTFU (dLTFU), and those who returned to care (RTC) after being LTFU for 1 year. We analyzed characteristics of individuals at enrollment. Among 2967 patients, 1565 (53%) were constantly-RIC, 826 (28%) dLTFU, and 576 (19%) RTC. CD4+ ≥350 cells/μL at enrollment was more frequent in RTC patients (43% vs 28% in both constantly-RIC and dLTFU groups, p < 0.01). Time since enrollment to ART initiation was longer in dLTFU (3.3 weeks) and RTC groups (6.0 weeks) in comparison with constantly-RIC patients (2.0 weeks, p < 0.01). Multivariate analysis showed significant differences between groups. Older and ART-naïve patients at enrollment were less likely to have gaps in the continuum of care. Those with non-MSM transmission were less likely to RTC. Patients with CD4+ ≥350 cells/μL at enrollment were more likely to reengage in care. Quality of life (QoL) in people living with HIV (PLHIV) is reportedly worse than in people without HIV, with many factors impacting on this. We aimed to investigate QoL in PLHIV in New Zealand (NZ). In-person interviews were conducted including socio-demographic, health, social connectedness, and stigma-related questions. QoL was measured using the 13-question PozQoL Scale – summed to give a score between 13 and 65. Univariate linear regression was used to investigate factors associated with differences in PozQoL scores. PLHIV (n = 188) of different ethnicities from throughout NZ participated. The mean age was 47 years; 65% were men; 61% were men who have sex with men; 61% had been living with HIV for ≥10 years. The mean summary PozQoL score was 47.16. Factors associated with a lower mean PozQol included no sex in the last 12 months (−9.03), inability to meet basic needs (−7.47), ever (−6.49) or recently (−5.03), experiencing stigma or discrimination, mental health condition (−5.74), HIV diagnosis <5 years (−5.48), poor health (−5.43), being unemployed (−5.02), not having support (−4.71), and greater internalised stigma (−2.81). Improving QoL will require investment in peer support and community welfare programmes to better support PLHIV, and stigma reduction campaigns targeting the broader community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIV cases are increasing in the rural Southern United States, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). To facilitate healthcare access and encourage HIV prevention for non-metropolitan MSM, it is essential to examine their barriers to care. This qualitative study conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 MSM living in non-metropolitan areas of the South. Analysis revealed that MSM experience multiple barriers accessing healthcare in non-metropolitan areas such as finding knowledgeable and affirming providers with desired characteristics and beliefs and communicating with providers about sexual health and HIV prevention. To aid in identification, many respondents expressed a desire for providers to publicly signal that they provide care for sexual and gender minority patients and are an inclusive clinical space. Overall, results suggest that MSM face unique healthcare-related challenges, beyond those typically experienced by the broader population in non-metropolitan areas, because of tailored identity-based needs. To better support MSM in non-metropolitan areas, especially in the South where increased experiences of stigma are found, providers should seek further training regarding sexual health communication and HIV prevention, indicate on websites and in offices that they support sexual and gender minority patients, and provide telehealth services to MSM living in more geographically isolated areas. Little is known about the effect of travel-related factors, such as mode of transportation, on retention in PrEP care, or PrEP persistence. We used data from the 2020 American Men's Internet Survey and conducted multilevel logistic regression to estimate the association between mode of transportation used for healthcare access and PrEP persistence among urban gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the U.S. MSM using public transportation were less likely to report PrEP persistence (aOR: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.28–0.95) than MSM using private transportation. There were no significant associations between PrEP persistence and using active transportation (aOR: 0.67; 95% CI: 0.35–1.29) or multimodal transportation (aOR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.51–1.43) compared to using private transportation. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a biomedical prevention approach that significantly reduces HIV acquisition. Our study aimed to explore factors associated with PrEP willingness and intention to adhere to PrEP among MSM through a cross-sectional survey in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China. Location sampling (TLS) and online recruitment were used to recruit participants to gauge their PrEP willingness and intention to adhere. Of 309 HIV-negative/unknown serostatus MSM, 75.7% were willing to use PrEP and 55.3% had high intention to take PrEP daily. Willingness to use PrEP was positively associated with having a college degree or higher (AOR = 1.90, 95%CI: 1.11–3.26) and higher anticipated HIV stigma (AOR = 2.74, 95%CI: 1.13–6.61). Facilitators of intention to adhere included higher education levels (AOR = 2.12, 95%CI: 1.33–3.39) and higher anticipated HIV stigma (AOR = 3.65, 95%CI: 1.36–9.80), whereas a primary barrier was community homophobia (AOR = 0.43, 95%CI: 0.20–0.92). This study documented high willingness to use PrEP, yet lower intention to adhere to PrEP in a sample of MSM in China. Public interventions and programs to promote adherence of PrEP for MSM is urgently needed in China. This study examined PrEP attitude and HIV risk factors associated with PrEP motivation and evaluated the efficacy of a mock public health video that addresses both motivational and stigma issues for improving PrEP uptake over a standard educational video. Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM; N = 604) were enrolled. One-way between subject analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc comparisons revealed that GBMSM in later stages of change had significantly higher endorsement of positive PrEP attitudes, PrEP stigma, objective and perceived HIV risk, HIV worry, and valued health benefits of PrEP more. Stepwise multiple regression revealed five significant predictors of PrEP motivation: HIV worry, objective HIV risk, anticipated PrEP stigma, positive PrEP attitudes, and perceived social consequences of PrEP use. Video conditions did not differ in their impact on PrEP attitudes or motivation; however, regardless of video condition, participants experienced a pre- to post-video increase in positive PrEP attitudes and motivation. Findings suggest HIV worry, objective HIV risk, positive PrEP attitudes, and perceived PrEP health benefits are important factors to optimize PrEP motivation, which can inform secondary prevention efforts. HIV testing rates among recently arrived (≤5 years) Asian-born men who have sex with men (MSM) in Australia remain suboptimal. Research indicates that belief in supernatural determinants of health (supernatural beliefs) may be an important barrier to greater HIV test uptake. We examined potential associations between supernatural beliefs and HIV testing among recently arrived Asian-born MSM in Australia. In 2019, an online survey was completed by 186 self-identified MSM born in Asia, and who arrived in Australia within the past five years and were never diagnosed with HIV. Supernatural belief was measured as the extent to which one felt that health was influenced by supernatural forces. Measures of association were estimated with multiple logistic regression. Participants with supernatural beliefs were significantly less likely to have tested for HIV in the past year. The adjusted predicted probability of not testing for HIV in the past year was 44.8% among those who held supernatural beliefs (95% CI: 30.5–59.2%), but only 5.2% among those who did not hold supernatural beliefs (95% CI: 1.9–8.6%). Religious affiliation was not significantly associated with testing for HIV. Studies on HIV self-testing (HIV-ST) have been limited to adults (age 18+). The study assessed use of HIV-ST among a diverse group of young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in the United States (US) and assessed differences in uptake by demographic characteristics and requirements for parental consent. This study demonstrated feasibility of HIV-ST for YMSM as young as 14 years of age, which suggests potential for increasing HIV testing in this young age group and promoting health equity. There are inequities in HIV outcomes among Black gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men who have sex with men (GBMSM) compared to GBMSM overall, including access to transportation to HIV care. It is unclear if the relationship between transportation and clinical outcomes extends to viral load. We assessed the relationship between transportation dependence to an HIV provider and undetectable viral load among Black and White GBMSM in Atlanta. We collected transportation and viral load information from GBMSM with HIV from 2016–2017 (n = 345). More Black than White GBMSM had a detectable viral load (25% vs. 15%) and took dependent (e.g. public) transportation (37% vs. 18%). Independent (e.g. car) transportation was associated with undetectable viral load for White GBMSM (cOR 3.61, 95% CI 1.45, 8.97) but was attenuated by income (aOR. 2.29, 95% CI 0.78, 6.71), and not associated for Black GBMSM (cOR 1.18, 95% CI 0.58, 2.24). One possible explanation for no association for Black GBMSM is that there are more competing barriers to HIV care for Black GBMSM than White GBMSM. Further investigation is needed to confirm whether 1) transportation is unimportant for Black GBMSM or 2) transportation interacts with additional factors not considered in this analysis. Pain is a highly prevalent and burdensome symptom among people with HIV (PWH). This study aims to identify how the experience of living with HIV and chronic pain influences pain beliefs, health-seeking and pain management. Thirty-nine purposively sampled PWH with chronic pain (sample characteristics = 61% women, 79% Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, 18% men who have sex with men, 45–54 median age category) participated in focus groups in London. Focus groups were co-facilitated with community members. Transcripts wereanalysed using a thematic approach. Findings revealed that HIV stigma, fractured care pathways, and general practitioners' lack of HIV training are barriers to supported pain management. Unaddressed pain results in poorer mental health and reduced quality of life, which has important clinical implications for HIV treatment adherence. Creating HIV-specific pain resources, activating social networks, and pain self-management techniques are potential solutions. Person-centred assessment and HIV training is needed to help clinicians identify PWH with chronic pain. Clear guidelines need to be developed to identify which health service providers are responsible for chronic pain management in PWH. Traditional surveys only provide local observations about the topological structure of isolated individuals. This study aims to develop a novel data-driven approach to reconstructing the social network of men who have sex with men (MSM) communities from locally observed information by surveys. A large social network consisting of 1075 users and their public relationships was obtained manually from BlueD.com. We followed the same survey-taking procedure to sample locally observed information and adapted an Exponential Random Graph Model (ERGM) to model the full structure of the BlueD social network (number of local nodes N = 1075, observed average degree k = 6.46). The parameters were learned and then used to reconstruct the MSM social networks by two real-world survey datasets in Hong Kong (N = 600, k = 5.61) and Guangzhou (N = 757, k = 5). Our method performed well on reconstructing the BlueD social network, with a high accuracy (90.3%). In conclusion, this study demonstrates the feasibility of using parameters learning methods to reconstruct the social networks of HIV key populations. For men who have sex with men (MSM) in the US, the positive and negative aspects of social capital - access to resources within their social networks and experiences of homophobia - may explain their disproportionate burden of HIV infection. We analyzed data from 379 HIV seronegative and seropositive MSM in Los Angeles, collected between May 2017 and February 2018. Dependent variables were HIV transmission risk behaviors and care continuum outcomes. We used multivariable logistic regression to estimate the association between social capital resources and experiences of homophobia with dependent variables, adjusting for sociodemographics and drug use. Most participants were under age 40 and 41% identified as Black/African American and 36% as Hispanic/Latino. Social capital resources associated with likelihood of new sexually transmitted infections (-5.5% per standard deviation (SD), 95%CI -10.3, 0.7%) and HIV testing (5% per SD, 95%CI 0.8, 9.2%). Experiences of homophobia associated with likelihood of methamphetamine use during sex (10% per SD, 95%CI 7, 14%), receiving (4.3% per SD, 95%CI 1.9, 6.7%) and giving (7.2% per SD, 95%CI 4.5, 9.9%) exchange sex, and missing appointments (7.2% per SD, 95%CI 0.8, 13.6%). Findings that social capital associated with HIV transmission risk behaviors and HIV testing suggest interventions to increase social capital resources would impact the HIV-prevention continuum.
