At the time of the recent description of Beytell's bullfrog (Pyxicephalus beytelli), no information about the breeding biology of this frog was known to science. The intensive publicity in the social media that followed this description caught the eye of a USA‐based film maker who incidentally recently filmed the breeding biology of this frog in the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana. The Critically Endangered Nubian Flapshell Turtle (Cyclanorbis elegans) is found in the White Nile River system in South Sudan and northern Uganda. Over the past few decades, its populations have sharply declined, primarily due to human-induced threats, leading to its near-extinction across almost its entire range. In this paper, we present the results of a comprehensive threat analysis undertaken to pinpoint the challenges confronting the species within its natural habitat, specifically in the only known sites where it currently exists. We aimed to develop a conceptual framework to understand causal relationships among driving forces, threats and the target species. This framework allows the visualisation and analysis of the web of intricate interactions that contribute to the species' decline and vulnerability. We convened a panel of experts who identified three primary direct threats to the Nubian Flapshell Turtle: (1) Sand mining (IUCN code 3.2); (2) Overfishing by native fishers and refugees (code 5.4) and (3) Habitat loss at nesting sites (code 7.3). Among these threats, overfishing had the largest geographical extension, the highest intensity and duration, while habitat loss occurred at the highest frequency. These threats varied significantly in intensity and frequency. Additionally, when assessing the overall magnitude of these threats, habitat loss and overfishing had the highest impact, with significantly higher scores compared to sand mining. Our experts also identified the underlying driving forces behind these threats: (1) Economic interests driving sand mining activities along the Nile; (2) The influence of civil conflict and refugee populations, which contribute to the demand for bushmeat; (3) the Chinese expatriates, that lead to overfishing; (4) The removal of bank vegetation serves as a catalyst for habitat loss at nesting sites. The resulting conceptual framework serves as a valuable tool for defining targeted conservation measures for each distinct threat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In my last Editorial, I wrote about the strong participation of African research in the Joint Meeting held by the British Ecological Society Tropical Ecology Group and the Society for Tropical Ecology in Edinburgh this April. Our contributing authors are in the vast majority from African institutions, something which marks out the important role this journal plays, as this is the only peer-reviewed scientific publication that has this author profile. This Special Section was carefully structured to contain thorough reviews of various aspects of the emerging field and pair them with original research papers that illustrated the points in the review. An editorial is presented which discusses camera trapping as the established tool to study biodiversity, especially terrestrial mammals. It also discusses the invitation offered to the periodical African Journal of Ecology to prepare a methodological camera trapping review paper, including the realization that each topic connected to it can not be summarized in one paper and challenge of conservationists and ecologists to handle camera trap datasets.

Large mammals consist of a wide variety of animal species ranging from lower herbivores to top carnivores (Collier, Ditchkoff, Raglin, & Smith, 2007). Natural habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate due to the expansion of human habitats, which account for the loss and reduction in many large mammalian species (Vaughan, Ryan, & Czaplewski, 2000). Therefore, the aim of this paper was to record the large diurnal mammals of Nechisar National Park and to identify the major human activities that threaten this cohort of species and their habitat. Among the order Artiodactyla, the family Bovidae was represented by seven species followed by the order Suidae ( I n i = 2) and the order Hippopotamoid ( I n i = 1). [Extracted from the article]

Since our September issue went to press, two international ecology conferences have been held on the continent: the 2nd meeting of the African Primatological Society in Entebbe, Uganda, and the 56th meeting of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation, held in Antananarivo, Madagascar. It transpires that, unsurprisingly, the number of submissions that report research on human-modified ecology or ecosystems has been rising steadily for many years and continues to increase. I anticipate that the contemporary research agenda set by African ecologists will focus increasingly on understanding the human modification of landscapes, ecosystems, wildlife and climate. Ecological niche modelling and first records from Namibia and Zimbabwe validate the amphi-equatorial distribution of Byrsinus pseudosyriacus (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Cydnidae) The genus I Byrsinus i Fieber, 1860 belongs to the tribe Geotomini in the subfamily Cydninae of the family Cydnidae (sensu Pluot-Sigwalt & Lis, 2008; and Lis et al., 2017). Moreover, the distance of the new localities in Namibia and Zimbabwe to the Equator is almost the same as the Equator's distance to the species northernmost site. Understanding homestead tree holdings is important for developing local conservation and livelihood strategies. However, relative to urban homesteads, tree holdings in rural African homesteads remain little studied, especially in semi‐arid settings. Using ecological and household surveys, this paper examines homestead tree composition, uses and challenges in Checheche, Zimbabwe. In total, 1,594 trees were encountered across 147 homesteads. Nearly, all homesteads (99%) had trees, and most of them were primarily planted for fruits and shade. Fuelwood, traditional medicines, windbreak and homestead decoration were considered as secondary benefits. Overall, tree density was approximately 112 trees/ha, with an average of 11 ± 7.1 trees per homestead. Homestead tree holdings were explained by age and gender of respondent, homestead ownership and importance attached to and knowledge of trees. Challenges to tree planting mentioned include termites, diseases, livestock damage, high temperatures, water shortages and poor quality soils. Overall, this study shows that homestead tree planting is widespread in semi‐arid rural settings but constraints to tree planting ought to be addressed to optimise the benefits from trees. Further research is needed to fully understand the socioecological context that explains tree survival, as a basis for developing interventions for enabling homestead tree planting. Like every year, I found myself at the University of Lomé (Togo) in 2022 teaching a class on "Population Ecology" to Masters' students. As part of the program, I was describing the concept of commensalism, that is interactions between two species where one species benefits and the other experiences no net gain (Mathis & Bronstein, [18]). INTERDISCIPLINARY ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN AFRICA At a more specialised level, greater interdisciplinarity in ecological research would most certainly lead to more studies on commensalism in Africa, and the discovery of new and interesting case studies. After all, I F. klingbeili i was only discovered in 1995 (Zoller et al., [34]), and the commensalism of West African I Fornasinius i species with tree hyraxes much more recently (Maquart & Malec, [17]). Wild meat as a source of income generation is a key driver of wild meat exploitation, even in some remote communities previously thought to be outside market influence (Coad I et al i ., 2019). Throughout much of Africa, and in particular west and central Africa, the hunting and sale of wild meat (or "bushmeat") represents an important source of food and income for local communities (Ingram I et al i ., 2021).
