Search

In transport processes across materials like glasses, living cells, and porous media, the probability density function of displacements exhibits exponential decay rather than Gaussian behavior. We show that this universal behavior of rare events, termed Laplace tails, emerges even when correlations and memory affect the dynamics. Using a renormalization-based approach, we demonstrate that correlations and memory do not suppress these tails but rather enhance their visibility, even at short timescales. The developed analytical framework refines the concept of correlations for rare events and enables the computation of effective parameters that govern Laplace tails in correlated processes. The XLZD collaboration is developing a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 60 to 80 t capable of probing the remaining WIMP-nucleon interaction parameter space down to the so-called neutrino fog. In this work we show that, based on the performance of currently operating detectors using the same technology and a realistic reduction of radioactivity in detector materials, such an experiment will also be able to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe using a natural-abundance xenon target. XLZD can reach a 3$\sigma$ discovery potential half-life of 5.7$\times$10$^{27}$ yr (and a 90% CL exclusion of 1.3$\times$10$^{28}$ yr) with 10 years of data taking, corresponding to a Majorana mass range of 7.3-31.3 meV (4.8-20.5 meV). XLZD will thus exclude the inverted neutrino mass ordering parameter space and will start to probe the normal ordering region for most of the nuclear matrix elements commonly considered by the community., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

This report describes the experimental strategy and technologies for a next-generation xenon observatory sensitive to dark matter and neutrino physics. The detector will have an active liquid xenon target mass of 60-80 tonnes and is proposed by the XENON-LUX-ZEPLIN-DARWIN (XLZD) collaboration. The design is based on the mature liquid xenon time projection chamber technology of the current-generation experiments, LZ and XENONnT. A baseline design and opportunities for further optimization of the individual detector components are discussed. The experiment envisaged here has the capability to explore parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter down to the neutrino fog, with a 3$\sigma$ evidence potential for the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections as low as $3\times10^{-49}\rm cm^2$ (at 40 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass). The observatory is also projected to have a 3$\sigma$ observation potential of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at a half-life of up to $5.7\times 10^{27}$ years. We present a novel deep learning pipeline to perform a model-independent, likelihood-free search for anomalous (i.e., non-background) events in the proposed next generation multi-ton scale liquid Xenon-based direct detection experiment, DARWIN. We train an anomaly detector comprising a variational autoencoder and a classifier on extensive, high-dimensional simulated detector response data and construct a one-dimensional anomaly score optimised to reject the background only hypothesis in the presence of an excess of non-background-like events. We benchmark the procedure with a sensitivity study that determines its power to reject the background-only hypothesis in the presence of an injected WIMP dark matter signal, outperforming the classical, likelihood-based background rejection test. We show that our neural networks learn relevant energy features of the events from low-level, high-dimensional detector outputs, without the need to compress this data into lower-dimensional observables, thus reducing computational effort and information loss. For the future, our approach lays the foundation for an efficient end-to-end pipeline that eliminates the need for many of the corrections and cuts that are traditionally part of the analysis chain, with the potential of achieving higher accuracy and significant reduction of analysis time., Comment: 10 Figures, 3 Tables, 23 Pages (incl. references)

We search for dark matter (DM) with a mass [3,12] $\mathrm{GeV} / c^2$ using an exposure of 3.51 $\mathrm{t} \times \mathrm{y}$ with the XENONnT experiment. We consider spin-independent, spin-dependent, momentum-dependent, mirror DM, and self-interacting DM with a light mediator coupling to Standard Model particles. Using a lowered energy threshold compared to the previous WIMP search, a blind analysis of [0.5, 5.0] $\mathrm{keV}$ nuclear recoil events reveals no significant signal excess over the background. XENONnT excludes spin-independent DM-nucleon cross sections $>2.5 \times 10^{-45} \mathrm{~cm}^2$ at $90 \%$ confidence level for 6 $\mathrm{GeV} / c^2$ DM. The solar ${ }^8 \mathrm{B}$ neutrino coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering background accounts for approximately half of the background in the signal region. In the considered mass range, the DM sensitivity approaches the 'neutrino fog', the limitation where neutrinos produce a signal that is indistinguishable from that of light DM-xenon nucleus scattering.

We investigated the Re-based kagome superconductor Re$_2$Zr through various measurements, including resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin rotation and relaxation spectroscopy. These results suggest that Re$_2$Zr is a moderately coupled potential two-gap superconductor. Zero-field muon relaxation data indicate the possible presence of a time-reversal symmetry-breaking state in the superconducting ground state. We study independent searchers competing for a target under restarts and find that introduction of restarts tends to enhance the search efficiency of an already efficient searcher. As a result, the difference between the search probabilities of the individual searchers increases when the system is subject to restarts. This result holds true independent of the identity of individual searchers or the specific details of the distribution of restart times. However, when only one of a pair of searchers is subject to restarts while the other evolves in an unperturbed manner, a concept termed as subsystem restarts, we find that the search probability exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on the restart rate. We also study the mean search time for a pair of run and tumble and Brownian searchers when only the run and tumble particle is subject to restarts. The XENONnT experiment, located at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, features a 5.9 tonne liquid xenon time projection chamber surrounded by an instrumented neutron veto, all of which is housed within a muon veto water tank. Due to extensive shielding and advanced purification to mitigate natural radioactivity, an exceptionally low background level of (15.8 $\pm$ 1.3) events/(tonne$\cdot$year$\cdot$keV) in the (1, 30) keV region is reached in the inner part of the TPC. XENONnT is thus sensitive to a wide range of rare phenomena related to Dark Matter and Neutrino interactions, both within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, with a focus on the direct detection of Dark Matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). From May 2021 to December 2021, XENONnT accumulated data in rare-event search mode with a total exposure of one tonne $\cdot$ year. This paper provides a detailed description of the signal reconstruction methods, event selection procedure, and detector response calibration, as well as an overview of the detector performance in this time frame. Transition-metal-based carbides (TMCs), renowned for their exceptional hardness, mechanical strength, and thermal properties, have recently emerged as promising candidates for topological superconductivity. In this study, we synthesized ReC in the NaCl structure at ambient pressure by substituting Mo or W at the Re-site. We investigated the superconducting properties of Re$_{1-x}$T$_{x}$C (where T = Mo, W) for $x = 0.5$ using magnetization, resistivity and specific heat measurements. We present the first measurement of nuclear recoils from solar $^8$B neutrinos via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering with the XENONnT dark matter experiment. The central detector of XENONnT is a low-background, two-phase time projection chamber with a 5.9\,t sensitive liquid xenon target. A blind analysis with an exposure of 3.51\,t$\times$y resulted in 37 observed events above 0.5\,keV, with ($26.4^{+1.4}_{-1.3}$) events expected from backgrounds. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a statistical significance of 2.73\,$\sigma$. The measured $^8$B solar neutrino flux of $(4.7_{-2.3}^{+3.6})\times 10^6\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ is consistent with results from dedicated solar neutrino experiments. The measured neutrino flux-weighted CE$\nu$NS cross-section on Xe of $(1.1^{+0.8}_{-0.5})\times10^{-39}\,\mathrm{cm}^2$ is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. This is the first direct measurement of nuclear recoils from solar neutrinos with a dark matter detector.

Prions are proteinaceous infectious particles that cause neurodegenerative diseases in humans and animals. The complex nature of prions, with respect to their conformations and aggregations, has been an important area of research for quite some time. Here, we develop a model of prion dynamics prior to the formation of oligomers and subsequent development of prion diseases within a stochastic framework, based on the analytical Master Equation and Stochastic Simulation Algorithm by Gillespie. The results that we obtain shows that solvent water molecules act as driving agents in the dynamics of prion aggregation. Further, it is found that aggregated and non-aggregated proteins tend to co-exist in an equilibrium state, depending upon the reaction rate constants. These results may provide a theoretical and qualitative contexts of possible therapeutic strategies in the treatment of prion diseases., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

The XENONnT experiment searches for weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter scattering off a xenon nucleus. In particular, XENONnT uses a dual-phase time projection chamber with a 5.9-tonne liquid xenon target, detecting both scintillation and ionization signals to reconstruct the energy, position, and type of recoil. A blind search for nuclear recoil WIMPs with an exposure of 1.1 tonne-years yielded no signal excess over background expectations, from which competitive exclusion limits were derived on WIMP-nucleon elastic scatter cross sections, for WIMP masses ranging from 6 GeV/$c^2$ up to the TeV/$c^2$ scale. This work details the modeling and statistical methods employed in this search. By means of calibration data, we model the detector response, which is then used to derive background and signal models. The construction and validation of these models is discussed, alongside additional purely data-driven backgrounds. This paper reports the development and testing of n-type silicon pad array detectors targeted for the Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) detector, which is an upgrade of the ALICE detector at CERN, scheduled for data taking in Run~4~(2029-2034). The FoCal detector includes hadronic and electromagnetic calorimeters, with the latter made of tungsten absorber layers and granular silicon pad arrays read out using the High Granularity Calorimeter Readout Chip~(HGCROC). This paper covers the Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) simulations, the fabrication process, current versus voltage (IV) and capacitance versus voltage (CV) measurements, test results with a blue LED and $^{90}$Sr beta source, and neutron radiation hardness tests. IV measurements for the detector showed that 90\% of the pads had leakage current below 10~nA at full depletion voltage. Simulations predicted a breakdown voltage of 1000~V and practical tests confirmed stable operation up to 500~V without breakdown. CV measurements in the data and the simulations gave a full depletion voltage of around 50~V at a capacitance of 35~pF. LED tests verified that all detector pads responded correctly. How do update rules affect the dynamical and steady state properties of a flock? In this study, we have explored the active Ising spins (s = +-1) in one dimension, where spin updates its orientation according to the Metropolis algorithm (based on the neighbors) via two different update rules. (i) Parallel, and (ii) Random-sequential. We explore the effect of Parallel and Random-sequential updates on the dynamical properties of flocks in one dimension. Due to the inherent asynchronous nature of the Random-sequential update, the directional switching of the flock is increased compared to the Parallel one. Fluctuations-driven complex oscillations are experimentally observed in cellular systems such as hepatocytes, cardiac cells, neuronal cells, etc. These systems are generally operating in regimes far from thermodynamic equilibrium. To study nonequilibrium thermodynamic properties such as energy dissipation in stochastic complex oscillations, we consider stochastic modeling of two nonlinear biological oscillators, namely, the intracellular calcium (Ca$^{2+}$) oscillation model and the Hindmarsh-Rose model for neuronal dynamics. These models exhibit various types of complex oscillations like bursting and quasi-periodic oscillations for various system parameter values. In this work, we formulate open chemical reaction schemes for the two model systems driving the systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium. We then analyze the steady-state total entropy production rate (EPR) in the various types of stochastic complex oscillations. Our results show higher values of steady-state total EPR in stochastic complex oscillations than simple periodic oscillations. Moreover, in the Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal model, we observe an order-to-disorder transition from periodic (organized) bursts of spikes to chaotic (unorganized) oscillations with distinct behaviors of steady-state total EPR. Our results reveal that stochastic complex oscillations are produced at the cost of higher energy consumption and that it requires a higher thermodynamic cost to maintain the periodic bursts than chaotic oscillations. Our findings indicate that complex cellular regulatory or signaling processes by Ca$^{2+}$ that help perform complex tasks of the nervous system or rich information coding by neurons involve a higher thermodynamic cost. The results deepen our understanding of energy dissipation in nonlinear, nonequilibrium biological systems with stochastic complex oscillatory dynamics.

Quantum random number generation (QRNG) is a resource that is a necessity in the field of cryptography. However, its certification has been challenging. In this article, we certify randomness with the aid of quantum entanglement in a device independent setting, where we choose two-photon interference for source characterisation. The CHSH inequality violation and quantum state tomography are used as independent checks on the measurement devices. These measures ensure the unpredictability of quantum random number generation. In the barrier escape problem, a random searcher starting at the energy minima tries to escape the barrier under the effect of thermal fluctuations. If the random searcher is subject to successive restarts at the bottom of the well, then its escape over the barrier top is delayed compared to the time it would take in absence of restarts. When restarting at an intermediate location, the time required by the random searcher to go from the bottom of the well to the restart location should be considered. Taking into account this time overhead, we find that restarts delay escape, independent of the specific nature of the distribution of restart times, or the location of restart, or the specific details of the random searcher. For the special case of Poisson restarts, we study the escape problem for a Brownian particle with a position-dependent restart rate $r(x)\theta(x^p_0-x)$, with $x^p_0$ being the location of restart. We find that position-dependent restarts delay the escape as compared to Kramers escape time. High-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductors have attracted significant attention due to their exceptional low-temperature mechanical and superconducting properties. We report the synthesis and thorough characterization of an equiatomic HEA superconductor with the composition Sc$_{0.20}$V$_{0.20}$Ti$_{0.20}$Hf$_{0.20}$Nb$_{0.20}$, crystallizing in a body-centered cubic crystal structure (Im3$\bar{m}$). Our investigation, using magnetization, transport, and heat capacity measurements, reveals the presence of weakly coupled, fully gapped superconductivity with a transition temperature of 4.17(3) K and the upper critical field exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The beam response to an external periodic excitation delivers relevant information about the optics, tune distribution and stability of a circulating beam in a storage ring. In this contribution the horizontal beam response to the excitation (transfer function) under conditions typical for slow extraction is presented for a coasting beam. The resulting spectrum exhibits a splitting behaviour. The single particle dynamics is discussed and an interpretation based on simulation results is presented.

We present comprehensive investigations into the structural, superconducting, and topological properties of Bi$_2$PdPt. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements performed on polycrystalline Bi$_2$PdPt demonstrate a superconducting transition at $\approx$ 0.8 K. Moreover, muon spin relaxation/rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements present evidence for a time reversal symmetry preserving, isotropically gapped superconducting state in Bi$_2$PdPt. We have also performed density-functional theory (DFT) calculations on Bi$_2$PdPt alongside the more general isostructural systems, BiPd$_{x}$Pt$_{1-x}$, of which Bi$_2$PdPt and $\gamma$-BiPd are special cases for $x=0.5$ and $x=1$ respectively. We have calculated the $Z_2$ topological index from our DFT calculations for a range of substitution fractions, $x$, between $x=0$ and $x=1$ characterizing the topology of the band structure. We find a non-trivial topological state when $x>0.75$ and a trivial topological state when $x<0.75$. Therefore our results indicate that BiPd$_{x}$Pt$_{1-x}$ could be a topological superconductor for $x>0.75$., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

This paper details the first application of a software tagging algorithm to reduce radon-induced backgrounds in liquid noble element time projection chambers, such as XENON1T and XENONnT. The convection velocity field in XENON1T was mapped out using $^{222}\text{Rn}$ and $^{218}\text{Po}$ events, and the root-mean-square convection speed was measured to be $0.30 \pm 0.01$ cm/s. Given this velocity field, $^{214}\text{Pb}$ background events can be tagged when they are followed by $^{214}\text{Bi}$ and $^{214}\text{Po}$ decays, or preceded by $^{218}\text{Po}$ decays. This was achieved by evolving a point cloud in the direction of a measured convection velocity field, and searching for $^{214}\text{Bi}$ and $^{214}\text{Po}$ decays or $^{218}\text{Po}$ decays within a volume defined by the point cloud. In XENON1T, this tagging system achieved a $^{214}\text{Pb}$ background reduction of $6.2^{+0.4}_{-0.9}\%$ with an exposure loss of $1.8\pm 0.2 \%$, despite the timescales of convection being smaller than the relevant decay times. We show that the performance can be improved in XENONnT, and that the performance of such a software-tagging approach can be expected to be further improved in a diffusion-limited scenario. Finally, a similar method might be useful to tag the cosmogenic $^{137}\text{Xe}$ background, which is relevant to the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures

We report a pressure-induced enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) in a non-centrosymmetric (NCS) compound, LaPtGe. With pressure, till 3 GPa, we observed a modest enhancement of the Tc with a rate of 0.071 K/GPa. However, above this pressure, the rate showed a ~2.5 times increase, 0.183 K/GPa. We observed a Tc of 3.94 K at 6 GPa, the highest pressure value used in our transport study. Synchrotron high-pressure x-ray powder diffraction (HP-XRPD) measurements do not reveal any structural phase transition in this system in this pressure range. However, it showed an apparent change of slope in the pressure dependence of lattice parameters above and below 3 GPa. Pressure dependence of the unit-cell volume also followed a distinct trend below and above 3 GPa, with the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state fit providing a bulk modulus (B0) value of ~144 and ~162 GPa, respectively, for two pressure regions. Further, the magnetotransport measurement under pressure up to 2.45 GPa reveals the enhancement of the upper critical field (Hc2(0)) from 0.7 T (0 GPa) to 0.92 T (2.45 GPa). In addition, the upward curvature in Hc2(T) becomes stronger with increasing pressure, suggesting a change of the underlying Fermi surface topology with pressure. The signature for the inducible Hc2(T) with pressure, the distinct enhancement of Tc around 3 GPa, and the noticeable change in lattice parameters around 3 GPa suggests the possibility of multi-gap superconductivity in LaPtGe similar to identical structure NCS compound, LaPtSi. The enhancement of Tc by pressure can be correlated with the possible underlying lattice modulation by compression and the change in the density of states at the Fermi level. Also, the bare change in pressure-dependent activation energy U0 up to 2.45 GPa calculated using the Arrhenius relation clearly shows that the shift in Tc does not arise from grain boundaries., Comment: 16 Pages, 08 figures

This work reports the testing of a Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) prototype based on an n-type Si pad array detector at the CERN PS accelerator. The FoCal is a proposed upgrade in the ALICE detector operating within the pseudorapidity range of 3.2 < $\mathrm{\eta}$ < 5.8. It aims to measure direct photons, neutral hadrons, vector mesons, and jets for the study of gluon saturation effects in the unexplored region of low momentum fraction x ($\mathrm{\sim10^{-5} - 10^{-6}}$). The prototype is a $\mathrm{8\times9}$ n-type Si pad array detector with each pad occupying one cm$^2$ area, fabricated on a 6-in, 325~$\mathrm{\pm 10 \thinspace \mu}$m thick, and high-resistivity ($\sim$7 k$\Omega \thinspace$ cm) Si wafer which is readout using HGCROCv2 chip. The detector is tested using pion beams of energy 10~GeV and electron beams of energy 1-5~GeV. The concentration of intracellular calcium ion (Ca$^{2+}$) exhibits complex oscillations, including bursting and chaos, as observed experimentally. These dynamics are influenced by inherent fluctuations within cells, which serve as crucial determinants in cellular decision-making processes and fate determination. In this study, we systematically explore the interplay between intrinsic fluctuation and the complexity of intracellular cytosolic Ca$^{2+}$ dynamics using complexity measures such as permutation entropy (PE) and statistical complexity (SC). Using the chemical Langevin equation, we simulate the stochastic dynamics of cytosolic Ca$^{2+}$. Our findings reveal that PE and SC effectively characterize the diverse, dynamic states of cytosolic Ca$^{2+}$ and illustrate their interactions with intrinsic fluctuation. PE analysis elucidates that the chaotic state is more sensitive to intrinsic fluctuation than the other periodic states. Furthermore, we identify distinct states of cytosolic Ca$^{2+}$ occupying specific locations within the theoretical bounds of the complexity-entropy causality plane. These locations indicate varying complexity and information content as intrinsic fluctuation varies. When adjusting the permutation order, the SC for the different states exhibits peaks in an intermediate range of intrinsic fluctuation values. Additionally, we identify scale-free or self-similar patterns in this intermediate range, which are further corroborated by multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis. These high-complexity states likely correspond to optimal Ca$^{2+}$ dynamics with biological significance, revealing rich and complex dynamics shaped by the interplay of intrinsic fluctuation and complexity. Our investigation enhances our understanding of how intrinsic fluctuation modulates the complexity of intracellular Ca$^{2+}$ dynamics that play crucial roles in biological cells.

Platinum-group transition-metal dichalcogenides have emerged as a subject of considerable interest in condensed matter physics due to their remarkable topological properties and unconventional superconducting behavior. In this study, we report the synthesis and superconducting characteristics of a new Dirac-type topological semimetallic compound 1$T$-RhSeTe. It shows type-II superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature of 4.72 K and a high upper critical field. In theory, quantum key distribution (QKD) provides unconditional security; however, its practical implementations are susceptible to exploitable vulnerabilities. This investigation tackles the constraints in practical QKD implementations using weak coherent pulses. We improve on the conventional approach of using decoy pulses by integrating it with the coincidence detection (CD) protocol. Additionally, we introduce an easy-to-implement algorithm to compute asymptotic key rates for the protocol. Furthermore, we have carried out an experimental implementation of the protocol, where we demonstrate that monitoring coincidences in the decoy state protocol leads to enhanced key rates under realistic experimental conditions., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures. The suppression of ferroquadrupolar order in TmVO$_4$ in a magnetic field is well-described by the transverse field Ising model, enabling detailed studies of critical dynamics near the quantum phase transition. We describe nuclear magnetic resonance measurements in pure and Y-doped single crystals. The non-Kramers nature of the ground state doublet leads to a unique form of the hyperfine coupling that exclusively probes the transverse field susceptibility. Our results show that this quantity diverges at the critical field, in contrast to the mean-field prediction. Furthermore, we find evidence for quantum critical fluctuations present near Tm-rich regions in Y-doped crystals at levels beyond which long-range order is suppressed, suggesting the presence of quantum Griffiths phases., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. Rhenium-based superconductors have recently attracted significant interest due to their unconventional superconducting properties. In this work, we report the synthesis and properties of new superconducting Re$_{7}$X$_{3}$ (X = Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf) binary alloys which maintain a fixed composition of rhenium while crystallizing in centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric crystal structures, depending on the elements of the X site. Comprehensive structural and superconducting properties were investigated using powder x-ray diffraction, AC transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements, and on the basis of these measurements, the superconducting phase diagram was constructed. The results suggest a complex interplay of crystal structure and the Re/X ratio, which governs the strength of spin-orbital coupling and controls the unconventional superconducting behavior in Re-based superconductors., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

The parameterization of the nucleon structure through Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) shed a new light on the nucleon internal dynamics. For its direct interpretation, Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is the golden channel for GPDs investigation. The DVCS process interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) mechanism to constitute the leading order amplitude of the $eN \to eN\gamma$ process. The study of the $ep\gamma$ reaction with polarized positron and electron beams gives a complete set of unique observables to unravel the different contributions to the $ep \gamma$ cross section. This separates the different reaction amplitudes, providing a direct access to their real and imaginary parts which procures crucial constraints on the model dependences and associated systematic uncertainties on GPDs extraction. The real part of the BH-DVCS interference amplitude is particularly sensitive to the $D$-term which parameterizes the Gravitational Form Factors of the nucleon. The separation of the imaginary parts of the interference and DVCS amplitudes provides insights on possible higher-twist effects. We propose to measure the unpolarized and polarized Beam Charge Asymmetries (BCAs) of the $\vec{e}^{\pm}p \to e^{\pm}p \gamma$ process on an unpolarized hydrogen target with {\tt CLAS12}, using polarized positron and electron beams at 10.6 GeV. The azimuthal and $t$-dependences of the unpolarized and polarized BCAs will be measured over a large $(x_B,Q^2)$ phase space using a 100 day run with a luminosity of 0.66$\times 10^{35}$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}$., Comment: Proposal to the Jefferson Lab Program Advisory Committee (PAC51)

The precision in reconstructing events detected in a dual-phase time projection chamber depends on an homogeneous and well understood electric field within the liquid target. In the XENONnT TPC the field homogeneity is achieved through a double-array field cage, consisting of two nested arrays of field shaping rings connected by an easily accessible resistor chain. Rather than being connected to the gate electrode, the topmost field shaping ring is independently biased, adding a degree of freedom to tune the electric field during operation. Two-dimensional finite element simulations were used to optimize the field cage, as well as its operation. Simulation results were compared to ${}^{83m}\mathrm{Kr}$ calibration data. This comparison indicates an accumulation of charge on the panels of the TPC which is constant over time, as no evolution of the reconstructed position distribution of events is observed. The simulated electric field was then used to correct the charge signal for the field dependence of the charge yield. This correction resolves the inconsistent measurement of the drift electron lifetime when using different calibrations sources and different field cage tuning voltages.

We describe laboratory experiments to generate X-ray photoionized plasmas of relevance to accretion-powered X-ray sources such as neutron star binaries and quasars, with significant improvements over previous work. A key quantity is referenced, namely the photoionization parameter. This is normally meaningful in an astrophysical steady-state context, but is also commonly used in the literature as a figure of merit for laboratory experiments that are, of necessity, time-dependent. We demonstrate emission-weighted values of {\xi} > 50 ergcm/s using laser-plasma X-ray sources, with higher results at the centre of the plasma which are in the regime of interest for several astrophysical scenarios. Comparisons of laboratory experiments with astrophysical codes are always limited, principally by the many orders of magnitude differences in time and spatial scales, but also other plasma parameters. However useful checks on performance can often be made for a limited range of parameters. For example, we show that our use of a keV line source, rather than the quasi-blackbody radiation fields normally employed in such experiments, has allowed the generation of the ratio of inner-shell to outer-shell photoionization expected from a blackbody source with ~keV spectral temperature. We compare calculations from our in-house plasma modelling code with those from Cloudy and find moderately good agreement for the time evolution of both electron temperature and average ionisation. However, a comparison of code predictions for a K-beta argon X-ray spectrum with experimental data reveals that our Cloudy simulation overestimates the intensities of more highly ionised argon species. The microscopic properties of superconducting cubic skutterudite-like material Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ are investigated using muon spin relaxation and rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements. Zero-field $\mu$SR measurements reveal the presence of a spontaneous internal field with a magnitude of $\approx$ 0.18~mT below the superconducting transition temperature, indicating broken time-reversal symmetry in the ground state. In line with previous experiments, transverse-field $\mu$SR measurements are consistent with a fully developed superconductivity gap in Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$. Our observations point towards the relevance of electronic correlations beyond electron-phonon coupling as origin and indicate that spin-orbit coupling is likely not the key driving force behind the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in this system., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

One of the most surprising discoveries made at Jefferson Lab has been the discrepancy in the determinations of the proton's form factor ratio $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ between unpolarized cross section measurements and the polarization transfer technique. Over two decades later, the discrepancy not only persists but has been confirmed at higher momentum transfers now accessible in the 12-GeV era. The leading hypothesis for the cause of this discrepancy, a non-negligible contribution from hard two-photon exchange, has neither been conclusively proven or disproven. This state of uncertainty not only clouds our knowledge of one-dimensional nucleon structure but also poses a major concern for our field's efforts to map out the three-dimensional nuclear structure. A better understanding of multi-photon exchange over a wide phase space is needed. We propose making comprehensive measurements of two-photon exchange over a wide range in momentum transfer and scattering angle using the CLAS12 detector. Specifically, we will measure the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton elastic scattering cross sections, using the proposed positron beam upgrade for CEBAF. The experiment will use 2.2, 4.4, and 6.6 GeV lepton beams incident on the standard CLAS12 unpolarized hydrogen target. Data will be collected by the CLAS12 detector in its standard configuration, except for a modified trigger to allow the recording of events with beam leptons scattered into the CLAS12 central detector. The sign of the beam charge, as well as the polarity of the CLAS12 solenoid and toroid, will be reversed several times in order to suppress systematics associated with local detector efficiency and time-dependent detector performance. Tailoring the quantum many-body interactions in layered materials through appropriate heterostructure engineering can result in emergent properties that are absent in the constituent materials thus promising potential future applications. In this article, we have demonstrated controlling the otherwise robust magnetic properties of transition metal phosphorus trisulphides (Mn/Fe/NiPS3) in their heterostructures with Weyl semimetallic MoTe2 which can be attributed to the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interactions at the interface of the two different layered materials. While the DM interaction is known to scale with the strength of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we also demonstrate here that the effect of DM interaction strongly varies with the spin orientation/dimensionality of the magnetic layer and the low-energy electronic density of state of the spin-orbit coupled layer. The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a state-of-the-art facility for studying the strong force, is expected to begin commissioning its first experiments in 2028. This is an opportune time for artificial intelligence (AI) to be included from the start at this facility and in all phases that lead up to the experiments. The second annual workshop organized by the AI4EIC working group, which recently took place, centered on exploring all current and prospective application areas of AI for the EIC. This workshop is not only beneficial for the EIC, but also provides valuable insights for the newly established ePIC collaboration at EIC. We demonstrate an experimental method to generate arbitrary non-separable states of light using polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM) degrees of freedom. We observe the intensity distribution corresponding to OAM modes of the light beam by projecting the non-separable state into different polarization states. We further verify the presence of non-separability by measuring the degree of polarization and linear entropy. This classical non-separability can be easily transferred to the quantum domain using spontaneous parametric down-conversion for applications in quantum communication and quantum sensing.

Xenon dual-phase time projections chambers (TPCs) have proven to be a successful technology in studying physical phenomena that require low-background conditions. With 40t of liquid xenon (LXe) in the TPC baseline design, DARWIN will have a high sensitivity for the detection of particle dark matter, neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$), and axion-like particles (ALPs). Although cosmic muons are a source of background that cannot be entirely eliminated, they may be greatly diminished by placing the detector deep underground. In this study, we used Monte Carlo simulations to model the cosmogenic background expected for the DARWIN observatory at four underground laboratories: Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) and SNOLAB. We determine the production rates of unstable xenon isotopes and tritium due to muon-included neutron fluxes and muon-induced spallation. These are expected to represent the dominant contributions to cosmogenic backgrounds and thus the most relevant for site selection.

Using spin-echo Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in the model Transverse-Field Ising system TmVO$_4$, we show that low frequency quantum fluctuations at the quantum critical point have a very different effect on $^{51}$V nuclear-spins than classical low-frequency noise or fluctuations that arise at a finite temperature critical point. Spin-echos filter out the low frequency classical noise but not the quantum fluctuations. This allows us to directly visualize the quantum critical fan and demonstrate the persistence of quantum fluctuations at the critical coupling strength in TmVO$_4$ to high temperatures in an experiment that remains transparent to finite temperature classical phase transitions. These results show that while dynamical decoupling schemes can be quite effective in eliminating classical noise in a qubit, a quantum critical environment may lead to rapid entanglement and decoherence., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We perform a blind search for particle signals in the XENON1T dark matter detector that occur close in time to gravitational wave signals in the LIGO and Virgo observatories. No particle signal is observed in the nuclear recoil, electronic recoil, CE$\nu$NS, and S2-only channels within $\pm$ 500 seconds of observations of the gravitational wave signals GW170104, GW170729, GW170817, GW170818, and GW170823. We use this null result to constrain mono-energetic neutrinos and Beyond Standard Model particles emitted in the closest coalescence GW170817, a binary neutron star merger. We set new upper limits on the fluence (time-integrated flux) of coincident neutrinos down to 17 keV at 90% confidence level. Furthermore, we constrain the product of coincident fluence and cross section of Beyond Standard Model particles to be less than $10^{-29}$ cm$^2$/cm$^2$ in the [5.5-210] keV energy range at 90% confidence level.

Control studies in ecological models of networks involving invasive plants can offer tangible management strategies. Framing control policies to tackle problems posed by invasive plants on indigenous plant diversity under the sustainable developmental goals framework is the main motivation of this paper. Based on the reported experimental and theoretical observations, we propose minimal ecological models of direct interactions of \textit{Lantana camara} with other entitites e.g. other indigenous plants (denoted by Control-plant) and soil microbes. The species' abundance variables represented by the nodes in the model networks follow generalized Lotka-Volterra dynamics and input signals are incorporated at appropriate driver nodes to control the \textit{Lantana camara} outgrowth. Analysis with Lie algebra and controllability criteria showed that our model systems are controllable with minimum of two control input signals. Analytical results of our model equations indicated that successive interventions are required to increase the abundance of control-plant, the microbes and suppress \textit{Lantana camara}. We observed from the numerical analysis with LQR algorithm that the number of interventions to be taken to control the \textit{Lantana camara} outgrowth depends on the choice of various important parameters such as intervention time, effort and penalty etc. Further, the increase in nonlinear terms contributed from self-loops in the network model shows the persistence of \textit{L. camara} and how it drives the coexistence of the species. We propose that parameters we have identified in our study needed to be considered and analyzed extensively for designing sustainable policies to control invasive species in an ecosystem., Comment: 11 Figures, 30 pages

Bell states form a complete set of four maximally polarization entangled two-qubit quantum state. Being a key ingredient of many quantum applications such as entanglement based quantum key distribution protocols, superdense coding, quantum teleportation, entanglement swapping etc, Bell states have to be prepared and measured. Spontaneous parametric down conversion is the easiest way of preparing Bell states and a desired Bell state can be prepared from any entangled photon pair through single-qubit logic gates. In this paper, we present the generation of complete set of Bell states, only by using unitary transformations of half-wave plate (HWP). The initial entangled state is prepared using a combination of a nonlinear crystal and a beam-splitter (BS) and the rest of the Bell states are created by applying single-qubit logic gates on the entangled photon pairs using HWPs. Our results can be useful in many quantum applications, especially in superdense coding where control over basis of maximally entangled state is required.

High upper-critical field superconducting alloys are required for superconducting device applications. In this study, we extensively characterized the structure and superconducting properties of alloys Ta$_{x}$ Hf$_{1-x}$ (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.8). The substitution of Hf (T$_{C}$ = 0.12 K, type-I superconductor) with Ta (T$_{C}$ = 4.4 K, type-I superconductor) shows an anomalous enhancement of T$_{C}$ with variation of composition. Interestingly, all compositions exhibited strongly coupled bulk type-II superconductivity with a high upper critical field. In particular, for compositions x = 0.2, and 0.4, the upper critical field (H$_{C2}$) approached the Pauli limiting field., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) offers unconditional security in principle. Many QKD protocols have been proposed and demonstrated to ensure secure communication between two authenticated users. Continuous variable (CV) QKD offers many advantages over discrete variable (DV) QKD since it is cost-effective, compatible with current classical communication technologies, efficient even in daylight, and gives a higher secure key rate. Keeping this in view, we demonstrate a discrete modulated CVQKD protocol in the free space which is robust against polarization drift. We also present the simulation results with a noise model to account for the channel noise and the effects of various parameter changes on the secure key rate. Superconducting high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a newly burgeoning field of unconventional superconductors and raise intriguing questions about the presence of superconductivity in highly disordered systems, which lack regular phonon modes. In our study, we have synthesized and investigated the superconducting characteristics of two new transition elements based HEAs Re$_{0.35} $Os$_{0.35} $Mo$_{0.08} $W$_{0.10} $Zr$_{0.12}$ (ReOMWZ) crystallizing in noncentrosymmetric $\alpha$-Mn structure, and Ru$_{0.35} $Os$_{0.35} $Mo$_{0.10} $W$_{0.10} $Zr$_{0.10}$ (RuOMWZ) crystallizing hexagonal closed-packed structure (hcp). Transition metal-based hexagonal hcp HEA is rare and highly desirable for practical applications due to their high hardness. Bulk magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements confirmed bulk type-II superconductivity in both alloys. Specific heat analysis up to the measured low-temperature range suffices for a BCS explanation. Comparable upper critical fields with the Pauli paramagnetic limit suggest the possibility of unconventional superconductivity in both HEAs., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Extracting the grain size from the microscopic images is a rigorous task involving much human expertise and manual effort. While calculating the grain size, we will be utilizing a finite number of particles which may lead to an uncertainty in the measurement. To avoid this difficulty, we utilize a simple mathematical tool, the auto-correlation function, to determine the grain size. The random particle distribution and the finite width Gaussian histogram of particle size has motivated us to utilize the auto-correlation function, which has been extensively studied for finding the size of random optical patterns. The finite width of the correlation function provides the grain size, and the difference in correlation length along two mutually independent directions provides information about the asymmetry present in the particle distribution, i.e., the deviation from a spherical shape. We study the escape behavior of a lamb to safe haven pursued by a hungry lion. Identifying the system with a pair of vicious Brownian walkers we evaluate the probability density function for the vicious pair and from there we estimate the distribution of first passage times. The process ends in two ways: either the lamb makes it to the safe haven (success) or is captured by the lion (failure). We find that the conditional distribution for both success and failure possesses a finite mean, but no higher moments exist. This makes it interesting to study these first passage properties of this Bernoulli process under restarts, which we do via Poissonian and sharp restart protocols. We find that under both restart protocols the probability of success exhibits a monotonic dependence on the restart parameters, however, their approach to the case without restarts is completely different. The distribution of first passage times exhibits an exponential decay for the two restart protocols. In addition, the distribution under sharp resetting also exhibits a periodic behavior, following the periodicity of the sharp restart protocol itself.

This paper presents structural, detailed magnetic, and exchange bias studies in polycrystalline Ba$_{2}$ScRuO$_{6}$ synthesized at ambient pressure. In contrast to its strontium analogue, this material crystallizes in a 6L hexagonal structure with the space group P$\overline{3}$m1. The Rietveld refinement using the room-temperature powder X-ray diffraction pattern suggests a Ru-Sc disorder in the structure. The temperature variation of the dc-electrical resistivity highlights a semiconducting behaviour with the electron conduction corresponding to the Mott 3D-VRH model. Detailed magnetization measurements show that Ba$_{2}$ScRuO$_{6}$ develops antiferromagnetic ordering at T$_{N}$ $\approx$ 9 K. Interestingly, below 9 K (T$_{N}$), the field cooled (FC) magnetic field variation of the magnetization curves highlights exchange bias effect in the sample. The exchange bias field reaches a maximum value of 1.24 kOe at 2 K. The exchange bias effect below the magnetic ordering temperature can be attributed to inhomogeneous magnetic correlations owing to the disorder in the structure., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

Geometrically frustrated structures combined with competing exchange interactions that have different magnitudes are known ingredients for achieving exotic properties. Herein, we studied detailed structural, magnetic, thermal (specific heat), magneto-dielectric, and magnetic exchange bias properties of a mixed 3d - 4d spinel oxide with composition CoFeRhO$_4$. Detailed magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction studies (NPD) highlight long-range ferrimagnetic ordering with an onset at 355 K. The magnetic structure is established using a ferrimagnetic model (collinear-type) that has a propagation vector k = 0, 0, 0. The magneto-dielectric effect appears below the magnetic ordering temperature, and the exchange bias (EB) effect is observed in field cooled (FC) conditions below 355 K. The magneto-dielectric coupling in CoFeRhO$_4$ originates due to the frustration in the structure, collinear ferrimagnetic ordering, and uncompensated magnetic moments. The unidirectional anisotropy resulting from the uncompensated magnetic moments causes the room-temperature exchange bias effect. Remarkably, the appearance of technologically important properties (ferromagnetism, magnetodielectric effect, and EB) at room temperature in CoFeRhO$_4$ indicates its potential use in sensors or spintronics., Comment: 8 pages, 11 Figures

Superconducting topological materials have generated considerable interest in condensed matter research due to their unusual gap structures and topological properties. In this study, we have investigated the normal and superconducting characteristics of a potential topological semimetal 1$T$-NbSeTe through comprehensive transport and magnetization measurements on bulk single crystals. The results suggest the topological semimetallic nature of NbSeTe, evidenced by the observation of the planar Hall effect. Moreover, it displays quasi-2D anisotropic superconductivity, which breaks the Pauli limit. The coexistence of the topological semimetallic nature and superconductivity in NbSeTe makes it a potential contender for topological superconductivity., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures
