Users in the data age have access to more data than ever before, but little is known how they interact with it. Using transparency and multimedia, data journalism (DJ) lets users explore and interpret data on their own. This study examines how DJ affects online comments as a case study of user interactions with data. The corpus comprises 6,400 stories and their comment sections from the DJ and other sections of the New York Times, from 2014-2022. Results indicate that DJ is positively associated with higher level of interactivity between the users. This relationship is mediated by statistical information, information sources, and static visualizations. However, there is a low level of interactivity with the content; consequently, only part of the users use it. The results demonstrate how data accessibility through DJ engages the users in conversation. Sim2Real transfer, particularly for manipulation policies relying on RGB images, remains a critical challenge in robotics due to the significant domain shift between synthetic and real-world visual data. In this paper, we propose SplatSim, a novel framework that leverages Gaussian Splatting as the primary rendering primitive to reduce the Sim2Real gap for RGB-based manipulation policies. By replacing traditional mesh representations with Gaussian Splats in simulators, SplatSim produces highly photorealistic synthetic data while maintaining the scalability and cost-efficiency of simulation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework by training manipulation policies within SplatSim and deploying them in the real world in a zero-shot manner, achieving an average success rate of 86.25%, compared to 97.5% for policies trained on real-world data. In this study, high pressure synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction is used to investigate the compression of two high pressure polymorphs of \ce{CrSb2}. The first is the \ce{CuAl2}-type polymorph with an eight-fold coordinated Cr, which can be quenched to ambient conditions from high-pressure high-temperature conditions. The second is the recently discovered \ce{MoP2}-type polymorph, which is induced by compression at room temperature, with a seven-fold coordinated Cr. Here, the assigned structure is unambiguously confirmed by solving it from single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the electrical properties of the \ce{MoP2}-type polymorph were investigated theoretically and the resistance calculations under pressure were accompanied by resistance measurements under high pressure on a single crystal of \ce{CrSb2}. The calculated electronic band structure for the \ce{MoP2}-type phase is discussed and we show that the polymorph is semimetallic and possesses type-I Weyl points. No further phase transitions were observed for the \ce{CuAl2}-type structure up to 50 GPa and 40 GPa for the \ce{MoP2}-type structure. Even though the \ce{CuAl2}-phase has the highest coordination number of Cr, it was found to be less compressible than the \ce{MoP2}-phase having a seven-fold coordinated Cr, which was attributed to the longer Cr-Sb distance in the \ce{CuAl2}-type phase. We propose MMLU-SR, a novel dataset designed to measure the true comprehension abilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) by challenging their performance in question-answering tasks with modified terms. We reasoned that an agent that "truly" understands a concept can still evaluate it when key terms are replaced by suitably defined alternate terms, and sought to differentiate such comprehension from mere text replacement. In our study, we modified standardized test questions by replacing a key term with a dummy word along with its definition. The key term could be in the context of questions, answers, or both questions and answers. Notwithstanding the high scores achieved by recent popular LLMs on the MMLU leaderboard, we found a substantial reduction in model performance after such replacement, suggesting poor comprehension. This new benchmark provides a rigorous benchmark for testing true model comprehension, and poses a challenge to the broader scientific community.

It is commonly believed that the dissipative properties of superdense matter play a negligible role in modeling gravitational waveforms from neutron star inspirals. This study aims to investigate whether this presumption holds true for the often neglected dissipative process associated with particle diffusion in superconducting neutron stars. As we demonstrate, diffusion effects can significantly impact the phase of the gravitational wave from the inspiral, manifesting at a magnitude of a few tens of milliradians at large orbit separations, equivalent to orbital frequencies of a few hertz. We consider a $d$-dimensional correlated percolation problem of sites {\em not} visited by a random walk on a hypercubic lattice $L^d$ for $d=3$, 4 and 5. The length of the random walk is ${\cal N}=uL^d$. Close to the critical value $u=u_c$, many geometrical properties of the problem can be described as powers (critical exponents) of $u_c-u$, such as $\beta$, which controls the strength of the spanning cluster, and $\gamma$, which characterizes the behavior of the mean finite cluster size $S$. We show that at $u_c$ the ratio between the mean mass of the largest cluster $M_1$ and the mass of the second largest cluster $M_2$ is independent of $L$ and can be used to find $u_c$. We calculate $\beta$ from the $L$-dependence of $M_2$ and $\gamma$ from the finite size scaling of $S$. The resulting exponent $\beta$ remains close to 1 in all dimensions. The exponent $\gamma$ decreases from $\approx 3.9$ in $d=3$ to $\approx1.9$ in $d=4$ and $\approx 1.3$ in $d=5$ towards $\gamma=1$ expected in $d=6$, which is close to $\gamma=4/(d-2)$., Comment: LaTeX, 8 figures, 9 pages

Autonomous navigation is crucial for various robotics applications in agriculture. However, many existing methods depend on RTK-GPS devices, which can be susceptible to loss of radio signal or intermittent reception of corrections from the internet. Consequently, research has increasingly focused on using RGB cameras for crop-row detection, though challenges persist when dealing with grown plants. This paper introduces a LiDAR-based navigation system that can achieve crop-agnostic over-canopy autonomous navigation in row-crop fields, even when the canopy fully blocks the inter-row spacing. Our algorithm can detect crop rows across diverse scenarios, encompassing various crop types, growth stages, the presence of weeds, curved rows, and discontinuities. Without utilizing a global localization method (i.e., based on GPS), our navigation system can perform autonomous navigation in these challenging scenarios, detect the end of the crop rows, and navigate to the next crop row autonomously, providing a crop-agnostic approach to navigate an entire field. The proposed navigation system has undergone tests in various simulated and real agricultural fields, achieving an average cross-track error of 3.55cm without human intervention. Shared gaze visualizations have been found to enhance collaboration and communication outcomes in diverse HCI scenarios including computer supported collaborative work and learning contexts. Given the importance of gaze in surgery operations, especially when a surgeon trainer and trainee need to coordinate their actions, research on the use of gaze to facilitate intra-operative coordination and instruction has been limited and shows mixed implications. We performed a field observation of 8 surgeries and an interview study with 14 surgeons to understand their visual needs during operations, informing ways to leverage and augment gaze to enhance intra-operative coordination and instruction. We found that trainees have varying needs in receiving visual guidance which are often unfulfilled by the trainers' instructions. It is critical for surgeons to control the timing of the gaze-based visualizations and effectively interpret gaze data. We suggest overlay technologies, e.g., gaze-based summaries and depth sensing, to augment raw gaze in support of surgical coordination and instruction.

This paper presents a modular, reconfigurable robot platform for robot manipulation in agriculture. While robot manipulation promises great advancements in automating challenging, complex tasks that are currently best left to humans, it is also an expensive capital investment for researchers and users because it demands significantly varying robot configurations depending on the task. Modular robots provide a way to obtain multiple configurations and reduce costs by enabling incremental acquisition of only the necessary modules. The robot we present, Hefty, is designed to be modular and reconfigurable. It is designed for both researchers and end-users as a means to improve technology transfer from research to real-world application. This paper provides a detailed design and integration process, outlining the critical design decisions that enable modularity in the mobility of the robot as well as its sensor payload, power systems, computing, and fixture mounting. Videos are prominent learning materials to prepare surgical trainees before they enter the operating room (OR). In this work, we explore techniques to enrich the video-based surgery learning experience. We propose Surgment, a system that helps expert surgeons create exercises with feedback based on surgery recordings. Surgment is powered by a few-shot-learning-based pipeline (SegGPT+SAM) to segment surgery scenes, achieving an accuracy of 92\%. The segmentation pipeline enables functionalities to create visual questions and feedback desired by surgeons from a formative study. Surgment enables surgeons to 1) retrieve frames of interest through sketches, and 2) design exercises that target specific anatomical components and offer visual feedback. In an evaluation study with 11 surgeons, participants applauded the search-by-sketch approach for identifying frames of interest and found the resulting image-based questions and feedback to be of high educational value.

The detectability of the gravitational-wave signal from $r$-modes depends on the interplay between the amplification of the mode by the CFS instability and its damping due to dissipative mechanisms present in the stellar matter. The instability window of $r$-modes describes the region of stellar parameters (angular velocity, $\Omega$, and redshifted stellar temperature, $T^\infty$), for which the mode is unstable. In this study, we reexamine this problem in nonbarotropic neutron stars, taking into account the previously overlooked nonanalytic behavior (in $\Omega$) of relativistic $r$-modes and enhanced energy dissipation resulting from diffusion in superconducting stellar matter. We demonstrate that at slow rotation rates, relativistic $r$-modes exhibit weaker amplification by the CFS instability compared to Newtonian ones. However, their dissipation through viscosity and diffusion is significantly more efficient. In rapidly rotating neutron stars within the framework of general relativity, the amplification of $r$-modes by the CFS mechanism and their damping due to shear viscosity become comparable to those predicted by Newtonian theory. In contrast, the relativistic damping of the mode by diffusion and bulk viscosity remains significantly stronger than in the nonrelativistic case. Consequently, account for diffusion and general relativity leads to a substantial modification of the $r$-mode instability window compared to the Newtonian prediction. Agricultural robotics is an active research area due to global population growth and expectations of food and labor shortages. Robots can potentially help with tasks such as pruning, harvesting, phenotyping, and plant modeling. However, agricultural automation is hampered by the difficulty in creating high resolution 3D semantic maps in the field that would allow for safe manipulation and navigation. In this paper, we build toward solutions for this issue and showcase how the use of semantics and environmental priors can help in constructing accurate 3D maps for the target application of sorghum. Specifically, we 1) use sorghum seeds as semantic landmarks to build a visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) system that enables us to map 78\\% of a sorghum range on average, compared to 38% with ORB-SLAM2; and 2) use seeds as semantic features to improve 3D reconstruction of a full sorghum panicle from images taken by a robotic in-hand camera., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, i.e., materials with a vanishing real part of the permittivity, have become an increasingly desirable platform for exploring linear and nonlinear optical phenomena in nanophotonic and on-chip environments. ENZ materials inherently enhance electric fields for properly chosen interaction scenarios, host extreme nonlinear optical effects, and lead to other intriguing phenomena. To date, studies in the optical domain have mainly focused on nanoscopically thin films of ENZ materials and their interaction with light and other nanostructured materials. Here, we experimentally and numerically explore the optical response of individual nanostructures milled into an ENZ material. For the study, we employ 3D structured light beams, allowing us to fully control polarization-dependent field enhancements enabled by a tailored illumination and a vanishing permittivity. Our studies provide insight between complex near-fields and the ENZ regime while showcasing the polarization-dependent controllability they feature. Various NLP tasks require a complex hierarchical structure over nodes, where each node is a cluster of items. Examples include generating entailment graphs, hierarchical cross-document coreference resolution, annotating event and subevent relations, etc. To enable efficient annotation of such hierarchical structures, we release CHAMP, an open source tool allowing to incrementally construct both clusters and hierarchy simultaneously over any type of texts. This incremental approach significantly reduces annotation time compared to the common pairwise annotation approach and also guarantees maintaining transitivity at the cluster and hierarchy levels. There is growing interest in automating agricultural tasks that require intricate and precise interaction with specialty crops, such as trees and vines. However, developing robotic solutions for crop manipulation remains a difficult challenge due to complexities involved in modeling their deformable behavior. In this study, we present a framework for learning the deformation behavior of tree-like crops under contact interaction. Our proposed method involves encoding the state of a spring-damper modeled tree crop as a graph. This representation allows us to employ graph networks to learn both a forward model for predicting resulting deformations, and a contact policy for inferring actions to manipulate tree crops. We conduct a comprehensive set of experiments in a simulated environment and demonstrate generalizability of our method on previously unseen trees. We present a contact-based phenotyping robot platform that can autonomously insert nitrate sensors into cornstalks to proactively monitor macronutrient levels in crops. This task is challenging because inserting such sensors requires sub-centimeter precision in an environment which contains high levels of clutter, lighting variation, and occlusion. To address these challenges, we develop a robust perception-action pipeline to detect and grasp stalks, and create a custom robot gripper which mechanically aligns the sensor before inserting it into the stalk. Through experimental validation on 48 unique stalks in a cornfield in Iowa, we demonstrate our platform's capability of detecting a stalk with 94% success, grasping a stalk with 90% success, and inserting a sensor with 60% success. In addition to developing an autonomous phenotyping research platform, we share key challenges and insights obtained from deployment in the field. In this paper, we present a next-best-view planning approach to autonomously size apple fruitlets. State-of-the-art viewpoint planners in agriculture are designed to size large and more sparsely populated fruit. They rely on lower resolution maps and sizing methods that do not generalize to smaller fruit sizes. To overcome these limitations, our method combines viewpoint sampling around semantically labeled regions of interest, along with an attention-guided information gain mechanism to more strategically select viewpoints that target the small fruits' volume. Additionally, we integrate a dual-map representation of the environment that is able to both speed up expensive ray casting operations and maintain the high occupancy resolution required to informatively plan around the fruit. When sizing, a robust estimation and graph clustering approach is introduced to associate fruit detections across images. Through simulated experiments, we demonstrate that our viewpoint planner improves sizing accuracy compared to state of the art and ablations. We also provide quantitative results on data collected by a real robotic system in the field.

Robotic pruning of dormant grapevines is an area of active research in order to promote vine balance and grape quality, but so far robotic efforts have largely focused on planar, simplified vines not representative of commercial vineyards. This paper aims to advance the robotic perception capabilities necessary for pruning in denser and more complex vine structures by extending plant skeletonization techniques. The proposed pipeline generates skeletal grapevine models that have lower reprojection error and higher connectivity than baseline algorithms. Reliable real-world deployment of reinforcement learning (RL) methods requires a nuanced understanding of their strengths and weaknesses and how they compare to those of humans. Human-machine systems are becoming more prevalent and the design of these systems relies on a task-oriented understanding of both human learning (HL) and RL. Thus, an important line of research is characterizing how the structure of a learning task affects learning performance. While increasingly complex benchmark environments have led to improved RL capabilities, such environments are difficult to use for the dedicated study of task structure. To address this challenge we present a learning environment built to support rigorous study of the impact of task structure on HL and RL. Key Point Analysis (KPA) has been recently proposed for deriving fine-grained insights from collections of textual comments. KPA extracts the main points in the data as a list of concise sentences or phrases, termed key points, and quantifies their prevalence. While key points are more expressive than word clouds and key phrases, making sense of a long, flat list of key points, which often express related ideas in varying levels of granularity, may still be challenging. To address this limitation of KPA, we introduce the task of organizing a given set of key points into a hierarchy, according to their specificity. Such hierarchies may be viewed as a novel type of Textual Entailment Graph. We develop ThinkP, a high quality benchmark dataset of key point hierarchies for business and product reviews, obtained by consolidating multiple annotations. We compare different methods for predicting pairwise relations between key points, and for inferring a hierarchy from these pairwise predictions. In particular, for the task of computing pairwise key point relations, we achieve significant gains over existing strong baselines by applying directional distributional similarity methods to a novel distributional representation of key points, and further boost performance via weak supervision., Comment: ACL 2023

We present MeeQA, a dataset for natural-language question answering over meeting transcripts. It includes real questions asked during meetings by its participants. The dataset contains 48K question-answer pairs, extracted from 422 meeting transcripts, spanning multiple domains. Questions in transcripts pose a special challenge as they are not always clear, and considerable context may be required in order to provide an answer. Further, many questions asked during meetings are left unanswered. To improve baseline model performance on this type of questions, we also propose a novel loss function, \emph{Flat Hierarchical Loss}, designed to enhance performance over questions with no answer in the text. Our experiments demonstrate the advantage of using our approach over standard QA models.

Modern Natural Language Generation (NLG) models come with massive computational and storage requirements. In this work, we study the potential of compressing them, which is crucial for real-world applications serving millions of users. We focus on Knowledge Distillation (KD) techniques, in which a small student model learns to imitate a large teacher model, allowing to transfer knowledge from the teacher to the student. In contrast to much of the previous work, our goal is to optimize the model for a specific NLG task and a specific dataset. Typically in real-world applications, in addition to labeled data there is abundant unlabeled task-specific data, which is crucial for attaining high compression rates via KD. In this work, we conduct a systematic study of task-specific KD techniques for various NLG tasks under realistic assumptions. We discuss the special characteristics of NLG distillation and particularly the exposure bias problem. Following, we derive a family of Pseudo-Target (PT) augmentation methods, substantially extending prior work on sequence-level KD. We propose the Joint-Teaching method, which applies word-level KD to multiple PTs generated by both the teacher and the student. Finally, we validate our findings in an extreme setup with no labeled examples using GPT-4 as the teacher. Our study provides practical model design observations and demonstrates the effectiveness of PT training for task-specific KD in NLG.

In this work, we present a method to extract the skeleton of a self-occluded tree canopy by estimating the unobserved structures of the tree. A tree skeleton compactly describes the topological structure and contains useful information such as branch geometry, positions and hierarchy. This can be critical to planning contact interactions for agricultural manipulation, yet is difficult to gain due to occlusion by leaves, fruits and other branches. Our method uses an instance segmentation network to detect visible trunk, branches, and twigs. Then, based on the observed tree structures, we build a custom 3D likelihood map in the form of an occupancy grid to hypothesize on the presence of occluded skeletons through a series of minimum cost path searches. We show that our method outperforms baseline methods in highly occluded scenes, demonstrated through a set of experiments on a synthetic tree dataset. In this paper, we present a computer vision-based approach to measure the sizes and growth rates of apple fruitlets. Measuring the growth rates of apple fruitlets is important because it allows apple growers to determine when to apply chemical thinners to their crops in order to optimize yield. The current practice of obtaining growth rates involves using calipers to record sizes of fruitlets across multiple days. Due to the number of fruitlets needed to be sized, this method is laborious, time-consuming, and prone to human error. With images collected by a hand-held stereo camera, our system, segments, clusters, and fits ellipses to fruitlets to measure their diameters. The growth rates are then calculated by temporally associating clustered fruitlets across days. We provide quantitative results on data collected in an apple orchard, and demonstrate that our system is able to predict abscise rates within 3.5% of the current method with a 6 times improvement in speed, while requiring significantly less manual effort. Moreover, we provide results on images captured by a robotic system in the field, and discuss the next steps required to make the process fully autonomous.

In this paper, we present a method for creating high-quality 3D models of sorghum panicles for phenotyping in breeding experiments. This is achieved with a novel reconstruction approach that uses seeds as semantic landmarks in both 2D and 3D. To evaluate the performance, we develop a new metric for assessing the quality of reconstructed point clouds without having a ground-truth point cloud. Finally, a counting method is presented where the density of seed centers in the 3D model allows 2D counts from multiple views to be effectively combined into a whole-panicle count. We demonstrate that using this method to estimate seed count and weight for sorghum outperforms count extrapolation from 2D images, an approach used in most state of the art methods for seeds and grains of comparable size.

We study numerically the 6D (2,0) superconformal bootstrap using the soft-Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm as a stochastic optimizer. We focus on the four-point functions of scalar superconformal primaries in the energy-momentum multiplet. Starting from the supergravity limit, we perform searches for adiabatically varied central charges and derive two curves for a collection of 80 CFT data (70 of these data correspond to unprotected long multiplets and 10 to protected short multiplets). We conjecture that the two curves capture the A- and D-series (2,0) theories. Our results are competitive when compared to the existing bounds coming from standard numerical bootstrap methods, and data obtained using the OPE inversion formula. The rich longitudinal individual level data available from electronic health records (EHRs) can be used to examine treatment effect heterogeneity. However, estimating treatment effects using EHR data poses several challenges, including time-varying confounding, repeated and temporally non-aligned measurements of covariates, treatment assignments and outcomes, and loss-to-follow-up due to dropout. Here, we develop the Subgroup Discovery for Longitudinal Data (SDLD) algorithm, a tree-based algorithm for discovering subgroups with heterogeneous treatment effects using longitudinal data by combining the generalized interaction tree algorithm, a general data-driven method for subgroup discovery, with longitudinal targeted maximum likelihood estimation. We apply the algorithm to EHR data to discover subgroups of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who are at higher risk of weight gain when receiving dolutegravir-containing antiretroviral therapies (ARTs) versus when receiving non dolutegravir-containing ARTs.

In a metric space $M=(X,d)$, we say that $v$ is between $u$ and $w$ if $d(u,w)=d(u,v)+d(v,w)$. Taking all triples $\{u,v,w\}$ such that $v$ is between $u$ and $w$, one can associate a 3-uniform hypergraph with each finite metric space $M$. An effort to solve some basic open questions regarding finite metric spaces has motivated an endeavor to better understand these associated hypergraphs. In answer to a question posed in arXiv:1112.0376, we present an infinite family of hypergraphs that are non-metric, i.e., they don't arise from any metric space. Another basic structure associated with a metric space is a binary equivalence on the vertex set, where two pairs are in the same class if they induce the same line. An equivalence that comes from some metric space is a metric-line equivalence. As machine learning (ML) is more tightly woven into society, it is imperative that we better characterize ML's strengths and limitations if we are to employ it responsibly. Existing benchmark environments for ML, such as board and video games, offer well-defined benchmarks for progress, but constituent tasks are often complex, and it is frequently unclear how task characteristics contribute to overall difficulty for the machine learner. Likewise, without a systematic assessment of how task characteristics influence difficulty, it is challenging to draw meaningful connections between performance in different benchmark environments. We introduce a novel benchmark environment that offers an enormous range of ML challenges and enables precise examination of how task elements influence practical difficulty. The tool frames learning tasks as a "board-clearing game," which we call the Game of Hidden Rules (GOHR). The environment comprises an expressive rule language and a captive server environment that can be installed locally. We propose a set of benchmark rule-learning tasks and plan to support a performance leader-board for researchers interested in attempting to learn our rules. GOHR complements existing environments by allowing fine, controlled modifications to tasks, enabling experimenters to better understand how each facet of a given learning task contributes to its practical difficulty for an arbitrary ML algorithm., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. We consider the quantum problem of a particle in either a spherical box or a finite spherical well confined by a circular cone with an apex angle $2\theta_0$ emanating from the center of the sphere, with $0<\theta_0<\pi$. This non-central potential can be solved by an extension of techniques used in spherically-symmetric problems. The angular parts of the eigenstates depend on azimuthal angle $\varphi$ and polar angle $\theta$ as $P_\lambda^m(\cos\theta){\rm e}^{im\varphi}$ where $P_\lambda^m$ is the associated Legendre function of integer order $m$ and (usually noninteger) degree $\lambda$. There is an infinite discrete set of values $\lambda=\lambda_i^m$ ($i=0,1,3,\dots$) that depend on $m$ and $\theta_0$. Each $\lambda_i^m$ has an infinite sequence of eigenenergies $E_n(\lambda_i^m)$, with corresponding radial parts of eigenfunctions. In a spherical box the discrete energy spectrum is determined by the zeros of the spherical Bessel functions. For several $\theta_0$ we demonstrate the validity of Weyl's continuous estimate ${\cal N}_W$ for the exact number of states $\cal N$ up to energy $E$, and evaluate the fluctuations of $\cal N$ around ${\cal N}_W$. We examine the behavior of bound states in a well of finite depth $U_0$, and find the critical value $U_c(\theta_0)$ when all bound states disappear. The radial part of the zero energy eigenstate outside the well is $1/r^{\lambda+1}$, which is not square-integrable for $\lambda\le 1/2$. ($0<\lambda\le 1/2$ can appear for $\theta_0>\theta_c\approx 0.726\pi$ and has no parallel in spherically-symmetric potentials.) Neutron stars can appear as sources of different nature. In this paper we address observability of a hypothetical class of neutron stars -- HOt and Fast Non Accreting Rotators, HOFNARs. These objects are heated due to the r-mode instability. With surface temperatures $\sim 10^6$~K they are expected to be thermal soft X-ray emitters. We perform a population synthesis modeling of HOFNARs to predict the number of potentially detectable sources in the eROSITA all-sky survey. For surface temperatures $\sim 10^6$~K we obtain $\sim 500$ sources above the detection limit 0.01~cts~s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 100$ easier identifiable sources with $>0.1$~cts~s$^{-1}$. Temperatures $\gtrsim 1.2\times 10^6$~K start to be in contradiction with non-detection of HOFNARs by ROSAT. Only for $T\lesssim 5\times 10^5$~K numbers predicted for eROSITA turn out to be so low that identification does not look possible. We conclude that eROSITA has good chances to discover HOFNARs, if they exist. We present a model for layered security with applications to the protection of sites such as stadiums or large gathering places. We formulate the problem as one of maximizing the capture of illegal contraband. The objective function is indefinite and only limited information can be gained when the problem is solved by standard convex optimization methods. In order to solve the model, we develop a dynamic programming approach, and study its convergence properties. Additionally, we formulate a version of the problem aimed at addressing intelligent adversaries who can adjust their direction of attack as they observe changes in the site security. Furthermore, we also develop a method for the solution of the latter model. Finally, we perform computational experiments to demonstrate the use of our methods.

An inconsistency between the theoretical analysis and numerical calculations of the relativistic $r$-modes puzzles the neutron star community since the Kojima's finding of the continuous part in the $r$-mode oscillation spectrum in 1997. In this paper, after a brief review of the Newtonian $r$-mode theory and of the literature devoted to the continuous spectrum of $r$-modes, we apply our original approach to the study of relativistic oscillation equations. Working within the Cowling approximation, we derive the general equations, governing the dynamics of discrete relativistic $r$-modes for both barotropic (isentropic) and nonbarotropic stars. A detailed analysis of the obtained equations in the limit of extremely slow stellar rotation rate reveals that, because of the effect of inertial reference frame-dragging, the relativistic $r$-mode eigenfunctions and eigenfrequencies become {\it non-analytic} functions of the stellar angular velocity, $\Omega$. We also derive the explicit expressions for the $r$-mode eigenfunctions and eigenfrequencies for very small values of $\Omega$. These expressions explain the asymptotic behavior of the numerically calculated eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions in the limit $\Omega\to 0$. All the obtained $r$-mode eigenfrequencies take discrete values in the frequency range, usually associated with the continuous part of the spectrum. No indications of the continuous spectrum, at least in the vicinity of the Newtonian $l=m=2$ $r$-mode frequency $\sigma=-4/3 \ \Omega$, are found., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures

Dormant season grapevine pruning requires skilled seasonal workers during the winter season which are becoming less available. As workers hasten to prune more vines in less time amid to the short-term seasonal hiring culture and low wages, vines are often pruned inconsistently leading to imbalanced grapevines. In addition to this, currently existing mechanical methods cannot selectively prune grapevines and manual follow-up operations are often required that further increase production cost. In this paper, we present the design and field evaluation of a rugged, and fully autonomous robot for end-to-end pruning of dormant season grapevines. The proposed design incorporates novel camera systems, a kinematically redundant manipulator, a ground robot, and novel algorithms in the perception system. The presented research prototype robot system was able to spur prune a row of vines from both sides completely in 213 sec/vine with a total pruning accuracy of 87%. Initial field tests of the autonomous system in a commercial vineyard have shown significant variability reduction in dormant season pruning when compared to mechanical pre-pruning trials. We analyze the effect of magnetic field in superconducting neutron-star cores on the chemical heating of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). We argue that the magnetic field destroys proton superconductivity in some volume fraction of the stellar core, thus allowing for unsuppressed non-equilibrium reactions of particle mutual transformations there. The reactions transform the chemical energy, accumulated by a neutron star core during the low-mass X-ray binary stage, into heat. This heating may keep an NS warm at the MSP stage (with the surface temperature $\sim 10^5\,\rm K$) for more than a billion of years after ceasing of accretion, without appealing to the rotochemical heating mechanism., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Project Debater was revealed in 2019 as the first AI system that can debate human experts on complex topics. Engaging in a live debate requires a diverse set of skills, and Project Debater has been developed accordingly as a collection of components, each designed to perform a specific subtask. Project Debater APIs provide access to many of these capabilities, as well as to more recently developed ones. This diverse set of web services, publicly available for academic use, includes core NLP services, argument mining and analysis capabilities, and higher-level services for content summarization. We describe these APIs and their performance, and demonstrate how they can be used for building practical solutions. We show that, in order to determine the equation of state of the inner crust of an accreting neutron star, one should minimize not the Gibbs free energy, as it is generally assumed in the literature, but a different thermodynamic potential $\Psi$, which tends to the minimum at fixed pressure and neutron chemical potential. Once this potential is specified, one can calculate the heat-release distribution in the stellar crust due to nonequilibrium nuclear reactions induced by accretion of matter onto the neutron-star surface. We introduce the use of reinforcement-learning (RL) techniques to the conformal-bootstrap programme. We demonstrate that suitable soft Actor-Critic RL algorithms can perform efficient, relatively cheap high-dimensional searches in the space of scaling dimensions and OPE-squared coefficients that produce sensible results for tens of CFT data from a single crossing equation. In this paper we test this approach in well-known 2D CFTs, with particular focus on the Ising and tri-critical Ising models and the free compactified boson CFT. We present results of as high as 36-dimensional searches, whose sole input is the expected number of operators per spin in a truncation of the conformal-block decomposition of the crossing equations. Our study of 2D CFTs uses only the global $so(2,2)$ part of the conformal algebra, and our methods are equally applicable to higher-dimensional CFTs. In this paper we deploy for the first time Reinforcement-Learning algorithms in the context of the conformal-bootstrap programme to obtain numerical solutions of conformal field theories (CFTs). As an illustration, we use a soft Actor-Critic algorithm and find approximate solutions to the truncated crossing equations of two-dimensional CFTs, successfully identifying well-known theories like the 2D Ising model and the 2D CFT of a compactified scalar. Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems are an essential component in agricultural robotics that enable autonomous navigation and the construction of accurate 3D maps of agricultural fields. However, lack of texture, varying illumination conditions, and lack of structure in the environment pose a challenge for Visual-SLAM systems that rely on traditional feature extraction and matching algorithms such as ORB or SIFT. This paper proposes 1) an object-level feature association algorithm that enables the creation of 3D reconstructions robustly by taking advantage of the structure in robotic navigation in agricultural fields, and 2) An object-level SLAM system that utilizes recent advances in deep learning-based object detection and segmentation algorithms to detect and segment semantic objects in the environment used as landmarks for SLAM. We test our SLAM system on a stereo image dataset of a sorghum field. We show that our object-based feature association algorithm enables us to map 78% of a sorghum range on average. In contrast, with traditional visual features, we achieve an average mapped distance of 38%. We describe a switching operation on collinearity graphs of polar spaces that produces cospectral graphs. Previous work on review summarization focused on measuring the sentiment toward the main aspects of the reviewed product or business, or on creating a textual summary. These approaches provide only a partial view of the data: aspect-based sentiment summaries lack sufficient explanation or justification for the aspect rating, while textual summaries do not quantify the significance of each element, and are not well-suited for representing conflicting views. Recently, Key Point Analysis (KPA) has been proposed as a summarization framework that provides both textual and quantitative summary of the main points in the data. We adapt KPA to review data by introducing Collective Key Point Mining for better key point extraction; integrating sentiment analysis into KPA; identifying good key point candidates for review summaries; and leveraging the massive amount of available reviews and their metadata. We show empirically that these novel extensions of KPA substantially improve its performance. Information sharing is vital in resisting cyberattacks, and the volume and severity of these attacks is increasing very rapidly. Therefore responders must triage incoming warnings in deciding how to act. This study asked a very specific question: "how can the addition of confidence information to alerts and warnings improve overall resistance to cyberattacks." We sought, in particular, to identify current practices, and if possible, to identify some "best practices." The research involved literature review and interviews with subject matter experts at every level from system administrators to persons who develop broad principles of policy. Despite the fact that different particle species can diffuse with respect to each other in neutron star (NS) cores, the effect of particle diffusion on various phenomena associated with NS oscillations is usually ignored. Here we demonstrate that the diffusion can be extremely powerful dissipative mechanism in superconducting NSs. In particular, it can be much more efficient than the shear and bulk viscosities. Fine-grained classification aims at distinguishing between items with similar global perception and patterns, but that differ by minute details. Our primary challenges come from both small inter-class variations and large intra-class variations. In this article, we propose to combine several innovations to improve fine-grained classification within the use-case of wildlife, which is of practical interest for experts. We utilize geo-spatiotemporal data to enrich the picture information and further improve the performance.
