To each projective hypersurface which is not a cone, we associate an abelian linear algebraic group called the symmetrizer group of the corresponding symmetric form. This group describes the set of homogeneous polynomials with the same Jacobian ideal and gives a conceptual explanation of results by Ueda--Yoshinaga and Wang. In particular, the diagonalizable part of the symmetrizer group detects Sebastiani-Thom property of the hypersurface and its unipotent part is related to the singularity of the hypersurface., Comment: to appear in J. The works of Commichau--Grauert and Hirschowitz showed that a formal equivalence between embeddings of a compact complex manifold is convergent, if the embeddings have sufficiently positive normal bundles in a suitable sense. We show that the convergence still holds under the weaker assumption of semi-positive normal bundles if some geometric conditions are satisfied. Our result can be applied to many examples of general minimal rational curves, including general lines on a smooth hypersurface of degree less than $n$ in the $(n+1)$-dimensional projective space. As a key ingredient of our arguments, we formulate and prove a generalized version of Tanaka's prolongation procedure for geometric structures subordinate to vector distributions, a result of independent interest. When applied to the universal family of the deformations of the compact submanifolds satisfying our geometric conditions, the generalized Tanaka prolongation gives a natural absolute parallelism on a suitable fiber space. A formal equivalence of embeddings must preserve these absolute parallelisms, which implies its convergence.

We exploit a natural correspondence between holomorphic $(2,3,5)$-distributions and nondegenerate lines on holomorphic contact manifolds of dimension $5$ to present a new perspective in the study of symmetries of $(2,3,5)$-distributions. This leads to a number of new results in this classical subject, including an unexpected relation between the multiply-transitive families of models having $7$- and $6$-dimensional symmetries, and a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of nontransitive $(2,3,5)$-distributions with $6$-dimensional symmetries and nonhomogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. An ingredient for establishing the former is an explicit classification of homogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$, which we present., Comment: 33 pages

We study the relation between torsion tensors of principal connections on G-structures and characteristic conic connections on associated cone structures. We formulate sufficient conditions under which the existence of a characteristic conic connection implies the existence of a torsion-free principal connection. We verify these conditions for adjoint varieties of simple Lie algebras, excluding those of type $\textsf{A}_{\ell \neq 2}$ or $\textsf{C}_{\ell}$. As an application, we give a complete classification of the germs of minimal rational curves whose VMRT at a general point is such an adjoint variety: nontrivial ones come from lines on hyperplane sections of certain Grassmannians or minimal rational curves on wonderful group compactifications., Comment: To appear in Journal de Math\'ematiques Pures et Appliqu\'ees

For a symplectic vector space $V$, a projective subvariety $Z \subset {\bf P} V$ is a Legendrian variety if its affine cone $\widehat{Z} \subset V$ is Lagrangian. In addition to the classical examples of subadjoint varieties associated to simple Lie algebras, many examples of nonsingular Legendrian varieties have been discovered which have positive-dimensional automorphism groups. We give a characterization of subadjoint varieties among such Legendrian varieties in terms of the isotropy representation. Our proof uses some special features of the projective third fundamental forms of Legendrian varieties and their relation to the lines on the Legendrian varieties., Comment: to appear in Ann. Inst. We propose a conjecture that a general member of a bracket-generating family of rational curves in a complex manifold satisfies the formal principle with convergence, namely, any formal equivalence between such curves is convergent. If the normal bundles of the rational curves are positive, the conjecture follows from the results of Commichau-Grauert and Hirschowitz. We prove the conjecture for the opposite case when the normal bundles are furthest from positive vector bundles among bracket-generating families, namely, when the families of rational curves are of Goursat type. The proof uses natural ODEs associated to rational curves of Goursat type and corresponding Cartan connections constructed by Doubrov-Komrakov-Morimoto. We show that any smooth surface germ in the moduli of abelian surfaces arises from a Lagrangian fibration of abelian surfaces. By Donagi-Markman's cubic condition, the key issue of the proof is to find a suitable affine structure with a compatible cubic form on the base space of the family. We achieve this by analyzing the properties of cubic forms in two variables and proving the existence of the solution of the resulting partial differential equations by Cauchy-Kowalewski Theorem. Modifying the argument, we show also that a smooth curve germ in the moduli of abelian surfaces arises from a Lagrangian fibration if and only if the curve is a null curve with respect to the natural holomorphic conformal structure on the moduli of abelian surfaces.

Since the celebrated work by Cartan, distributions with \nobreak{small} growth vector $(2,3,5)$ have been studied extensively. In the holomorphic setting, there is a natural correspondence between holomorphic $(2,3,5)$-distributions and nondegenerate lines on holomorphic contact manifolds of dimension 5. We generalize this correspondence to higher dimensions by studying nondegenerate lines on holomorphic contact manifolds and the corresponding class of distributions of small growth vector $(2m, 3m, 3m+2)$ for any positive integer $m$., Comment: To appear in Nagoya Mathematical Journal

Pasquier and Perrin discovered that the ${\rm G}_2$-horospherical manifold ${\bf X}$ of Picard number 1 can be realized as a smooth specialization of the rational homogeneous space parameterizing the lines on the 5-dimensional hyperquadric, in other words, it can be deformed nontrivially to the rational homogeneous space. We show that ${\bf X}$ is the only smooth projective variety with this property. This is obtained as a consequence of our main result that ${\bf X}$ can be recognized by its VMRT, namely, a Fano manifold of Picard number 1 is biregular to ${\bf X}$ if and only if its VMRT at a general point is projectively isomorphic to that of ${\bf X}$. We employ the method the authors developed to solve the corresponding problem for symplectic Grassmannians, which constructs a flat Cartan connection in a neighborhood of a general minimal rational curve. In adapting this method to ${\bf X}$, we need an intricate study of the positivity/negativity of vector bundles with respect to a family of rational curves, which is subtler than the case of symplectic Grassmannians because of the nature of the differential geometric structure on ${\bf X}$ arising from VMRT., Comment: To appear in Transformation Groups

We study minimal rational curves on a complex manifold that are tangent to a distribution. In this setting, the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) has to be isotropic with respect to the Levi tensor of the distribution. Our main result is a converse of this: any smooth projective variety isotropic with respect to a vector-valued anti-symmetric form can be realized as VMRT of minimal rational curves tangent to a distribution on a complex manifold. 1-flat irreducible G-structures, equivalently, irreducible G-structures admitting torsion-free affine connections, have been studied extensively in differential geometry, especially in connection with the theory of affine holonomy groups. We propose to study them in a setting in algebraic geometry, where they arise from varieties of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) associated to families of minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. We prove that such a structure is locally symmetric when the dimension of the uniruled projective manifold is at least 5. By the classification result of Merkulov and Schwachh\"ofer on irreducible affine holonomy, the problem is reduced to the case when the VMRT at a general point of the uniruled projective manifold is isomorphic to a subadjoint variety. In the latter situation, we prove a stronger result that, without the assumption of 1-flatness, the structure arising from VMRT is always locally flat. Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) of sufficiently large diameter and a few layers self-collapse into flat ribbons at atmospheric pressure, forming bundles of stacked CNTs that maximize packing and thus CNT interaction. Their improved stress transfer by shear makes collapsed CNTs ideal building blocks in macroscopic fibers of CNTs with high-performance longitudinal properties, particularly high tensile properties as reinforcing fibres. This work introduces cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy of FIB-milled samples as a way to univocally identify collapsed CNTs and to determine the full population of different CNTs in macroscopic fibers produced by spinning from floating catalyst chemical vapour deposition. We show that close proximity in bundles is a major driver for collapse and that CNT stoutness (number of layers/diameter), which dominates the collapse onset, is controlled by the growth promotor. Despite differences in decomposition route, different C precursors lead to similar distributions of the ratio layers/diameter. The synthesis conditions in this study give a maximum fraction of collapsed CNTs of 70$\%$ when using selenium as promotor, corresponding to an average of $0.25 layer/nm$.

We study unbendable rational curves, i.e., nonsingular rational curves in a complex manifold of dimension $n$ with normal bundles isomorphic to $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(1)^{\oplus p} \oplus \mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}^{\oplus (n-1-p)}$ for some nonnegative integer $p$. Well-known examples arise from algebraic geometry as general minimal rational curves of uniruled projective manifolds. After describing the relations between the differential geometric properties of the natural distributions on the deformation spaces of unbendable rational curves and the projective geometric properties of their varieties of minimal rational tangents, we concentrate on the case of $p=1$ and $n \leq 5$, which is the simplest nontrivial situation. In this case, the families of unbendable rational curves fall essentially into two classes: Goursat type or Cartan type. Those of Goursat type arise from ordinary differential equations and those of Cartan type have special features related to contact geometry. We show that the family of lines on any nonsingular cubic 4-fold is of Goursat type, whereas the family of lines on a general quartic 5-fold is of Cartan type, in the proof of which the projective geometry of varieties of minimal rational tangents plays a key role., Comment: To appear in Journal de Math\'ematiques Pures et Appliqu\'ees

A nonsingular rational curve $C$ in a complex manifold $X$ whose normal bundle is isomorphic to $${\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}^1}(1)^{\oplus p} \oplus {\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}^1}^{\oplus q}$$ for some nonnegative integers $p$ and $q$ is called an unbendable rational curve on $X$. Associated with it is the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) at a point $x \in C,$ which is the germ of submanifolds ${\mathcal C}^C_x \subset {\mathbb P} T_x X$ consisting of tangent directions of small deformations of $C$ fixing $x$. Assuming that there exists a distribution $D \subset TX$ such that all small deformations of $C$ are tangent to $D$, one asks what kind of submanifolds of projective space can be realized as the VMRT ${\mathcal C}^C_x \subset {\mathbb P} D_x$. When $D \subset TX$ is a contact distribution, a well-known necessary condition is that ${\mathcal C}_x^C$ should be Legendrian with respect to the induced contact structure on ${\mathbb P} D_x$. We prove that this is also a sufficient condition: we construct a complex manifold $X$ with a contact structure $D \subset TX$ and an unbendable rational curve $C \subset X$ such that all small deformations of $C$ are tangent to $D$ and the VMRT ${\mathcal C}^C_x \subset {\mathbb P} D_x$ at some point $x\in C$ is projectively isomorphic to an arbitrarily given Legendrian submanifold. A cone structure on a complex manifold $M$ is a closed submanifold $\mathcal C \subset \mathbb P TM$ of the projectivized tangent bundle which is submersive over $M$. A conic connection on $\mathcal C$ specifies a distinguished family of curves on $M$ in the directions specified by $\mathcal C$. There are two common sources of cone structures and conic connections, one in differential geometry and another in algebraic geometry. In differential geometry, we have cone structures induced by the geometric structures underlying holomorphic parabolic geometries, a classical example of which is the null cone bundle of a holomorphic conformal structure. In algebraic geometry, we have the cone structures consisting of varieties of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) given by minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. The local invariants of the cone structures in parabolic geometries are given by the curvature of the parabolic geometries, the nature of which depend on the type of the parabolic geometry, i.e., the type of the fibers of $\mathcal C \to M$. For the VMRT-structures, more intrinsic invariants of the conic connections which do not depend on the type of the fiber play important roles. We study the relation between these two different aspects for the cone structures induced by parabolic geometries associated with a long simple root of a complex simple Lie algebra. As an application, we obtain a local differential-geometric version of the global algebraic-geometric recognition theorem due to Mok and Hong--Hwang. Nirenberg and Spencer posed the question whether the germ of a compact complex submanifold in a complex manifold is determined by its infinitesimal neighborhood of finite order when the normal bundle is sufficiently positive. To study the problem for a larger class of submanifolds, including free rational curves, we reformulate the question in the setting of families of submanifolds and their infinitesimal neighborhoods. When the submanifolds have no nonzero vector fields, we prove that it is sufficient to consider only first-order neighborhoods to have an affirmative answer to the reformulated question. When the submanifolds do have nonzero vector fields, we obtain an affirmative answer to the question under the additional assumption that submanifolds have certain nice deformation properties, which is applicable to free rational curves. As an application, we obtain a stronger version of the Cartan-Fubini type extension theorem for Fano manifolds of Picard number 1. We measured Drude absorption of gated CVD graphene using far-infrared transmission spectroscopy, and determined carrier scattering rate (g) as function of the varied carrier density (n). The n-dependent g(n) was obtained for a series of conditions systematically changed as (10 K, vacuum) -> (300 K, vacuum) -> (300 K, ambient pressure), which reveals that (1) at low-T, charged impurity (=A/sqrt(n)) and short-range defect (=B*sqrt(n)) are the major scattering sources which constitute the total scattering g=A/sqrt(n)+B*sqrt(n), (2) among various kinds of phonons populated at room-T, surface polar phonon of the SiO2 substrate is the dominantly scattering source, (3) in air, the gas molecules adsorbed on graphene play a dual role in carrier scattering as charged impurity center and resonant scattering center. We present the absolute scattering strengths of those individual scattering sources, which provides the complete map of scattering mechanism of CVD graphene for the first time. This scattering map allows us find out practical measures to suppress the individual scatterings, the mobility gains accompanied by them, and finally the ultimate attainable carrier mobility for CVD graphene., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

A conjecture of Hirschowitz's predicts that a globally generated vector bundle $W$ on a compact complex manifold $A$ satisfies the formal principle, i.e., the formal neighborhood of its zero section determines the germ of neighborhoods in the underlying complex manifold of the vector bundle $W$. By applying Cartan's equivalence method to a suitable differential system on the universal family of the Douady space of the complex manifold, we prove that this conjecture is true if $A$ is a Fano manifold, or if the global sections of $W$ separate points of $A$. Our method shows more generally that for any unobstructed compact submanifold $A$ in a complex manifold, if the normal bundle is globally generated and its sections separate points of $A$, then a sufficiently general deformation of $A$ satisfies the formal principle. We show that if the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) of a uniruled projective manifold at a general point is projectively equivalent to that of a symplectic or an odd-symplectic Grassmannian, the germ of a general minimal rational curve is biholomorphic to the germ of a general line in a presymplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we characterize symplectic and odd-symplectic Grassmannians, among Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, by their VMRT at a general point and prove their rigidity under global K\"ahler deformation. Analogous results for $G/P$ associated with a long root were obtained by Mok and Hong-Hwang a decade ago by using Tanaka theory for parabolic geometries. When $G/P$ is associated with a short root, for which symplectic Grassmannians are most prominent examples, the associated local differential geometric structure is no longer a parabolic geometry and standard machinery of Tanaka theory cannot be applied because of several degenerate features. To overcome the difficulty, we show that Tanaka's method can be generalized to a setting much broader than parabolic geometries, by assuming a pseudo-concavity type condition that certain vector bundles arising from Spencer complexes have no nonzero sections. We study the singularities of Legendrian subvarieties of contact manifolds in the complex-analytic category and prove two rigidity results. The first one is that Legendrian singularities with reduced tangent cones are contactomorphically biholomorphic to their tangent cones. This result is partly motivated by a problem on Fano contact manifolds. The second result is the deformation-rigidity of normal Legendrian singularities, meaning that any holomorphic family of normal Legendrian singularities is trivial, up to contactomorphic biholomorphisms of germs. Both results are proved by exploiting the relation between infinitesimal contactomorphisms and holomorphic sections of the natural line bundle on the contact manifold., Comment: 18 pages

Euler-symmetric projective varieties are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many C*-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. We show that Euler-symmetric projective varieties can be classified by symbol systems, a class of algebraic objects modeled on the systems of fundamental forms at general points of projective varieties. We study relations between the algebraic properties of symbol systems and the geometric properties of Euler-symmetric projective varieties. We describe also the relation between Euler-symmetric projective varieties of dimension n and equivariant compactifications of the vector group G_a^n.

In a joint work with N. Mok in 1997, we proved that for an irreducible representation $G \subset {\bf GL}(V),$ if a holomorphic $G$-structure exists on a uniruled projective manifold, then the Lie algebra of $G$ has nonzero prolongation. We tried to generalize this to an arbitrary connected algebraic subgroup $G \subset {\bf GL}(V)$ and a complex manifold containing an immersed rational curve, but the proposed proof had a flaw., Comment: The proof of the main results had a flaw. We study the connected component of the automorphism group of a cubic hypersurface over complex numbers. When the cubic hypersurface has nonzero Hessian, this group is usually small. But there are examples with unusually large automorphism groups: the secants of Severi varieties. Can we characterize them by the property of having unusually large automorphism groups? We study this question from the viewpoint of prolongations of the Lie algebras. Our result characterizes the secants of Severi varieties, among cubic hypersurfaces with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus, in terms of prolongations of certain type.

The family of varieties of minimal rational tangents on a quasi-homogeneous projective manifold is isotrivial. Conversely, are projective manifolds with isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents quasi-homogenous? We will show that this is not true in general, even when the projective manifold has Picard number 1. In fact, an isotrivial family of varieties of minimal rational tangents needs not be locally flat in differential geometric sense. This leads to the question for which projective variety Z, the Z-isotriviality of varieties of minimal rational tangents implies local flatness. A family of algebraic curves covering a projective variety $X$ is called a web of curves on $X$ if it has only finitely many members through a general point of $X$. A web of curves on $X$ induces a web-structure, in the sense of local differential geometry, in a neighborhood of a general point of $X$. We study how the local differential geometry of the web-structure affects the global algebraic geometry of $X$. Under two geometric assumptions on the web-structure, the pairwise non-integrability condition and the bracket-generating condition, we prove that the local differential geometry determines the global algebraic geometry of $X$, up to generically finite algebraic correspondences. The two geometric assumptions are satisfied, for example, when $X \subset {\bf P}^N$ is a Fano submanifold of Picard number 1, and the family of lines covering $X$ becomes a web. In this special case, we have a stronger result that the local differential geometry of the web-structure determines $X$ up to biregular equivalences. As an application, we show that if $X, X' \subset {\bf P}^N, \dim X' \geq 3,$ are two such Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, then any surjective morphism $f: X \to X'$ is an isomorphism., Comment: 35 pages, to appear in Duke Math. A birational transformation f: P^n --> Z, where Z is a nonsingular variety of Picard number 1, is called a special birational transformation of type (a, b) if f is given by a linear system of degree a, its inverse is given by a linear system of degree b and the base locus S \subset P^n of f is irreducible and nonsingular. In this paper, we classify special birational transformations of type (2,1). In addition to previous works Alzati-Sierra and Russo on this topic, our proof employs natural C^*-actions on Z in a crucial way. Let $\phi: X \to \mathbb P^n$ be a double cover branched along a smooth hypersurface of degree $2m, 2 \leq m \leq n-1$. We study the varieties of minimal rational tangents $\mathcal C_x \subset \mathbb P T_x(X)$ at a general point $x$ of $X$. We describe the homogeneous ideal of $\mathcal C_x$ and show that the projective isomorphism type of $\mathcal C_x$ varies in a maximal way as $x$ varies over general points of $X$. Our description of the ideal of $\mathbb C_x$ implies a certain rigidity property of the covering morphism $\phi$. As an application of this rigidity, we show that any finite morphism between such double covers with $m=n-1$ must be an isomorphism. Let X be an $n$-dimensional Fano manifold of Picard number 1. We study how many different ways X can compactify the complex vector group C^n equivariantly. Hassett and Tschinkel showed that when X = P^n with n \geq 2, there are many distinct ways that X can be realized as equivariant compactifications of C^n. Our result says that projective space is an exception: among Fano manifolds of Picard number 1 with smooth VMRT, projective space is the only one compactifying C^n equivariantly in more than one ways. This answers questions raised by Hassett-Tschinkel and Arzhantsev-Sharoyko.

For a Lagrangian torus A in a simply-connected projective symplectic manifold M, we prove that M has a hypersurface disjoint from a deformation of A. This implies that a Lagrangian torus in a compact hyperk\"ahler manifold is a fiber of an almost holomorphic Lagrangian fibration, giving an affirmative answer to a question of Beauville's. Selective area growth of GaN nanostructures has been performed on full 2" c-sapphire substrates using Si3N4 mask patterned by nanoimprint lithography (array of 400 nm diameter circular holes). A new process has been developed to improve the homogeneity of the nucleation selectivity of c-oriented hexagonal prismatic nanostructures at high temperature (1040\circ C). It consists of an initial GaN nucleation step at 950 \circ C followed by ammonia annealing before high temperature growth. Structural analyses show that GaN nanostructures are grown in epitaxy with c-sapphire with lateral overgrowths on the mask. Strain and dislocations are observed at the interface due to the large GaN/sapphire lattice mismatch in contrast with the high quality of the relaxed crystals in the lateral overgrowth area. A cathodoluminescence study as a function of the GaN nanostructure size confirms these observations: the lateral overgrowth of GaN nanostructures has a low defect density and exhibits a stronger near band edge (NBE) emission than the crystal in direct epitaxy with sapphire. The shift of the NBE positions versus nanostructure size can be mainly attributed to a combination of compressive strain and silicon doping coming from surface mask diffusion.

The prolongation g^{(k)} of a linear Lie algebra g \subset gl(V) plays an important role in the study of symmetries of G-structures. Cartan and Kobayashi-Nagano have given a complete classification of irreducible linear Lie algebras g \subset gl(V) with non-zero prolongations. If g is the Lie algebra aut(\hat{S}) of infinitesimal linear automorphisms of a projective variety S \subset \BP V, its prolongation g^{(k)} is related to the symmetries of cone structures, an important example of which is the variety of minimal rational tangents in the study of uniruled projective manifolds. From this perspective, understanding the prolongation aut(\hat{S})^{(k)} is useful in questions related to the automorphism groups of uniruled projective manifolds. Our main result is a complete classification of irreducible non-degenerate nonsingular variety with non zero prolongations, which can be viewed as a generalization of the result of Cartan and Kobayashi-Nagano. As an application, we show that when $S$ is linearly normal and Sec(S) \neq P(V), the blow-up of P(V) along S has the target rigidity property, i.e., any deformation of a surjective morphism Y \to Bl_S(PV) comes from the automorphisms of Bl_S(PV)., Comment: 44 pages

A holomorphic Lagrangian fibration is stable if the characteristic cycles of the singular fibers are of type $I_m, 1 \leq m <\infty,$ or $A_{\infty}$. We will give a complete description of the local structure of a stable Lagrangian fibration when it is principally polarized. In particular, we give an explicit form of the period map of such a fibration and conversely, for a period map of the described type, we construct a principally polarized stable Lagrangian fibration with the given period map. This enables us to give a number of examples exhibiting interesting behavior of the characteristic cycles.

Ross and Thomas introduced the concept of slope stability to study K-stability, which has conjectural relation with the existence of constant scalar curvature K\"ahler metric. This paper presents a study of slope stability of Fano manifolds of dimension $n\geq 3$ with respect to smooth curves. The question turns out to be easy for curves of genus $\geq 1$ and the interest lies in the case of smooth rational curves. Our main result classifies completely the cases when a polarized Fano manifold $(X, -K_X)$ is not slope stable with respect to a smooth curve. Our result also states that a Fano threefold $X$ with Picard number 1 is slope stable with respect to every smooth curve unless $X$ is the projective space., Comment: 13 pages, Theorems in the original version were modified. We show that a general $n$-dimensional polarized abelian variety $(A,L)$ of a given polarization type and satisfying $ h^0(A, L) \geq \dfrac{8^n}{2} \cdot \dfrac{n^n}{n !}$ is projectively normal. We shall show that the variety of minimal rational tangents on a complete toric manifold X is linear and minimal components in RatCurves^n(X) corresponds bijectively to some special primitive collections in the fan defining X.

We formulate the equivalence problem, in the sense of E. Cartan, for families of minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. An important invariant of this equivalence problem is the variety of minimal rational tangents. We study the case when varieties of minimal rational tangents at general points form an isotrivial family. The main question in this case is for which projective variety $Z$, a family of minimal rational curves with $Z$-isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents is locally equivalent to the flat model. We show that this is the case when $Z$ satisfies certain projective-geometric conditions, which hold for a non-singular hypersurface of degree $\geq 4$., Comment: to appear in Ann. sci. E. N. S

We show that deformations of a surjective morphism onto a Fano manifold of Picard number 1 are unobstructed and rigid modulo the automorphisms of the target, if the variety of minimal rational tangents of the Fano manifold is non-linear or finite. The condition on the variety of minimal rational tangents holds for practically all known examples of Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, except the projective space. When the variety of minimal rational tangents is non-linear, the proof is based on an earlier result of N. Mok and the author on the birationality of the tangent map. When the varieties of minimal rational tangents of the Fano manifold is finite, the key idea is to factorize the given surjective morphism, after some transformation, through a universal morphism associated to the minimal rational curves., Comment: to appear in J. reine angew. Given a projective symplectic manifold $M$ and a non-singular hypersurface $X \subset M$, the symplectic form of $M$ induces a foliation of rank 1 on $X$, called the characteristic foliation. We study the question when the characteristic foliation is algebraic, namely, all the leaves are algebraic curves. Our main result is that the characteristic foliation of $X$ is not algebraic if $X$ is of general type. For the proof, we first establish an \'etale version of Reeb stability theorem in foliation theory and then combine it with the positivity of the direct image sheaves associated to families of curves.

Given a projective irreducible symplectic manifold $M$ of dimension $2n$, a projective manifold $X$ and a surjective holomorphic map $f:M \to X$ with connected fibers of positive dimension, we prove that $X$ is biholomorphic to the projective space of dimension $n$. The proof is obtained by exploiting two geometric structures at general points of $X$: the affine structure arising from the action variables of the Lagrangian fibration $f$ and the structure defined by the variety of minimal rational tangents on the Fano manifold $X$.

We give a Kodaira-type classification of general singular fibers of a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration in Fujiki's class $\mathcal C$. Our approach is based on the study of the characteristic vector field of the discriminantal hypersurface, which naturally arises from the defining equation of the hypersurface via the symplectic form. As an application, we show that the characteristic foliation of the discriminantal hypersurface has algebraic leaves which are either rational curves or smooth elliptic curves.

Denote by ${\rm Curves}_d(X,x)$ the space of curves of degree $d$ lying on $X$ and passing through $x$.
