Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a bundle gerbe with connection on a smooth manifold $M$, and let $\rho: G \rightarrow \operatorname{Diff}(M)$ be a smooth action of a Fr\'echet--Lie group $G$ on $M$ that preserves the isomorphism class of $\mathcal{G}$. In this setting, we obtain an abelian extension of $G$ that consists of pairs $(g,A)$, where $g \in G$, and $A$ is an isomorphism from $\rho_{g}^{*}\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{G}$. We equip this group with a natural structure of abelian Fr\'{e}chet--Lie group extension of $G$, under the assumption that the first integral homology of $M$ is finitely generated. As an application, we construct the universal central extension (in the category of Fr\'echet--Lie groups) of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic surface. As an intermediate step, we obtain a central extension of the group of exact volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a 3-manifold whose corresponding Lie algebra extension is conjectured to be universal., Comment: 40 pages

In order to determine when surface-by-surface bundles are non-positively curved, Llosa Isenrich and Py give a necessary condition: given a surface-by-surface group $G$ with infinite monodromy, if $G$ is CAT(0) then the monodromy representation is injective. We extend this to a more general result: Let $G$ be a group with a normal surface subgroup $R$. Assume $G/R$ satisfies the property that for every infinite normal subgroup $\Lambda$ of $G/R$, there is an infinite subgroup $\Lambda_0<\Lambda$ so that the centralizer $C_{G/R}(\Lambda_0)$ is finite. If $G$ is CAT(0) with infinite monodromy, then the monodromy representation has a finite kernel. We prove that acylindrically hyperbolic groups satisfy this property., Comment: Lemma 3.6 is added. The aim of this note is twofold. Firstly, we explain in detail Remark 4.1 in \cite{doan-a} by showing that the action of the automorphism group of the second Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_2$ on itself extends to its formal semi-universal deformation only up to the first order. In [J. of Alg. 369: 70-95, 2012], the authors constructed a seven term exact sequence in the cohomology of a group extension G of a normal subgroup N by a quotient group Q with coefficients in a G-module M. However, they were unable to establish the precise link between the maps in that sequence and the corresponding maps arising from the spectral sequence associated to the group extension and the G-module M. In this paper, we show that there is a close connection between [J. of Alg. 369: 70-95, 2012] and our two earlier papers [J. of Alg. 72: 296-334, 1981] and [J. Reine Angew. Math. 321: 150-172, 1981]. In particular, we show that the results in the two papers just quoted entail that the maps of [J. of Alg. 369: 70-95, 2012] other than the obvious inflation and restriction maps do correspond to the corresponding ones arising from the spectral sequence., Comment: 13 pages

We show that the universal odd Chern form, defined on the stable unitary group $U$, extends to the loop group $LU$ in a way that is closed with respect to an equivariant-type differential. This provides an odd analogue to the Bismut-Chern form. We also describe the associated transgression form, the so-called Bismut-Chern-Simons form, and explicate some properties it inherits as a differential form on the space of maps of a cylinder into the stable unitary group. In this paper, we construct a seven-term exact sequence involving the cohomology groups of a group extension. Although the existence of such a sequence can be derived using spectral sequence arguments, there is little knowledge about some of the maps occuring in the sequence, limiting its usefulness. Here we present a construction using only very elementary tools, always related to the notion of conjugation in a group. This results in a complete and usable description of all the maps, which we describe both on cocycle level as on the level of the interpretations of low dimensional cohomology groups (e.g. group extensions)., Comment: Updated version, new cocycle description added

We examine the notion of symmetry in quantum field theory from a fundamental representation theoretic point of view. This leads us to a generalization expressed in terms of quantum groups and braided categories. It also unifies the conventional concept of symmetry with that of exchange statistics and the spin-statistics relation. We show how this quantum group symmetry is reconstructed from the traditional (super) group symmetry, statistics and spin-statistics relation. The old question of extending the Poincare group to unify external and internal symmetries (solved by supersymmetry) is reexamined in the new framework. The reason why we should allow supergroups in this case becomes completely transparent. However, the true symmetries are not expressed by groups or supergroups here but by ordinary (not super) quantum groups. We show in this generalized framework that supersymmetry remains the most general unification of internal and space-time symmetries provided that all particles are either bosons or fermions. Extensions of a direct product T of two cyclic groups Z_n1 and Z_n2 by an Abelian (gauge) group G with the trivial action of T on G are considered. All possible (nonequivalent) factor systems are determined using the Mac Lane method. Some of resulting groups describe magnetic translation groups. The Weil correspondence states that the datum of a Seiberg-Witten differential is equivalent to an algebraic group extension of the integrable system associated to the Seiberg-Witten geometry. Remarkably this group extension represents quantum consistent couplings for the $\mathcal{N}=2$ QFT if and only if the extension is anti-affine in the algebro-geometric sense. The universal special geometry is the algebraic integrable system whose Lagrangian fibers are the anti-affine extension groups; it is defined over a base $\mathscr{B}$ parametrized by the Coulomb coordinates and the couplings. On the total space of the universal geometry there is a canonical (holomorphic) Euler differential. The ordinary Seiberg-Witten geometries at fixed couplings are symplectic quotients of the universal one, and the Seiberg-Witten differential arises as the reduction of the Euler one in accordance with the Weil correspondence. This universal viewpoint allows to study geometrically the flavor symmetry of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT in terms of the Mordell-Weil lattice (with N\'eron-Tate height) of the Albanese variety $A_\mathbb{L}$ of the universal geometry seen as a quasi-Abelian variety $Y_\mathbb{L}$ defined over the function field $\mathbb{L}\equiv\mathbb{C}(\mathscr{B})$., Comment: 43 pages

We consider nontrivial topological phases in Floquet systems using unitary loops and stroboscopic evolutions under a static Floquet Hamiltonian $H_F$ in the presence of dynamical space-time symmetries $G$. While the latter has been subject of out-of-equilibrium classifications that extend the ten-fold way and systems with additional crystalline symmetries to periodically driven systems, we explore the anomalous topological zero modes that arise in $H_F$ from the coexistence of a dynamical space-time symmetry $M$ and antisymmetry $A$ of $G$, and classify them using a frequency-domain formulation. Moreover, we provide an interpretation of the resulting Floquet topological phases using a frequency lattice with a decoration represented by color degrees of freedom on the lattice vertices. These colors correspond to the coefficient $N$ of the group extension $\tilde{G}$ of $G$ along the frequency lattice, given by $N=Z\rtimes H^1[A,M]$. The distinct topological classifications that arise at different energy gaps in its quasi-energy spectrum are described by the torsion product of the cohomology group $H^{2}[G,N]$ classifying the group extension., Comment: 4 pages + supplementary material

Recent research has revealed that the CRT symmetry for fermions exhibits a fractionalization distinct from the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathcal{C}}\times\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathcal{R}}\times\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathcal{T}}$ for scalar bosons. In fact, the CRT symmetry for fermions can be extended by internal symmetries such as fermion parity, thereby forming a group extension of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ direct product. Conventionally, a Majorana fermion is defined by one Dirac fermion with trivial charge conjugation. However, when the spacetime dimension $d+1=5,6,7\bmod8$, the real dimension of Majorana fermion (dim$_{\mathbb{R}}\chi_{\mathcal{C}\ell(d,0)}$) aligns with the real dimension of Dirac fermion (dim$_{\mathbb{R}}\psi_{\mathcal{C}\ell(d)}$), rather than being half, which necessitates the introduction of a symplectic Majorana fermion, defined by two Dirac fermions with trivial charge conjugation. To include these two types of Majorana fermions, we embed the theory in $n_{\mathbb{R}}$ and define the Majorana fermion field as a representation of the real Clifford algebra with 8-fold periodicity. Within the Hamiltonian formalism, we identify the 8-fold CRT-internal symmetry groups across general dimensions. Similarly, Dirac fermion field is defined as a representation of the complex Clifford algebra with 2-fold periodicity. Interestingly, we discover that the CRT-internal symmetry groups exhibit an 8-fold periodicity that is distinct from that of the complex Clifford algebra. In certain dimensions where distinct mass terms can span a mass manifold, the CRT-internal symmetries can act non-trivially upon this mass manifold. Given a set $A$ and an abelian group $B$ with operators in $A$, in the sense of Krull and Noether, we introduce the Ore group extension $B[x ; \delta_B , \sigma_B]$ as the additive group $B[x]$, with $A[x]$ as a set of operators. Here, the action of $A[x]$ on $B[x]$ is defined by mimicking the multiplication used in the classical case where $A$ and $B$ are the same ring. We derive generalizations of Vandermonde's and Leibniz's identities for this construction, and they are then used to establish associativity criteria. Additionally, we prove a version of Hilbert's basis theorem for this structure, under the assumption that the action of $A$ on $B$ is what we call weakly $s$-unital. Finally, we apply these results to the case where $B$ is a left module over a ring $A$, and specifically to the case where $A$ and $B$ coincide with a non-associative ring which is left distributive but not necessarily right distributive.

In this paper, we introduce a concept of A-by-FCE coarse fibration structure for metric spaces, which serves as a generalization of the A-by-CE structure for a sequence of group extensions proposed by Deng, Wang, and Yu. We prove that the maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for metric spaces with bounded geometry that admit an A-by-FCE coarse fibration structure. As an application, the relative expanders constructed by Arzhantseva and Tessera, as well as the box spaces derived from an ``amenable-by-Haagerup'' group extension, admit the A-by-FCE coarse fibration structure. Consequently, the maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for these spaces, which may not admit an FCE structure, i.e. fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1208.4543

The monoidal category of twisted modules of a Vertex Operator Algebra $V$ is defined and reduced to its 2-group of invertible objects $G_\alpha$, which can be described by a 3-cocycle $\alpha$ on its 0-truncation $G$ with values in the group of units $A$ of the field of definition of $V$ serving as its associator. This cocycle also presents the classifying morphism of an $\infty$-group extension of $G$ by the delooping $BA$. Motivated by this, it is proven that the $\infty$-group extension classified by a 3-cocycle $\alpha$ is presented by the skeletal 2-group $G_\alpha$ with associator $\alpha$. Let $X$ be an affine, simplicial toric variety over a field. Let $G_0$ denote the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves on a Noetherian scheme and let $F^1G_0$ denote the first step of the filtration on $G_0$ by codimension of support. Then $G_0(X)\cong\mathbb{Z}\oplus F^1G_0(X)$ and $F^1G_0(X)$ is a finite abelian group. In dimension 2, we show that $F^1G_0(X)$ is a finite cyclic group and determine its order. In dimension 3, $F^1G_0(X)$ is determined up to a group extension of the Chow group $A^1(X)$ by the Chow group $A^2(X)$. We determine the order of the Chow group $A^1(X)$ in this case. We continue classification of finite groups which can be used as symmetry group of the scalar sector of the four-Higgs-doublet model (4HDM). Our objective is to systematically construct non-abelian groups via the group extension procedure, starting from the abelian groups $A$ and their automorphism groups $\mathrm{Aut}(A)$. Previously, we considered all cyclic groups $A$ available for the 4HDM scalar sector. Here, we further develop the method and apply it to extensions by the remaining rephasing groups $A$, namely $A = \mathbb{Z_2}\times\mathbb{Z_2}$, $\mathbb{Z_4}\times \mathbb{Z_2}$, and $\mathbb{Z_2}\times \mathbb{Z_2}\times \mathbb{Z_2}$. As $\mathrm{Aut}(A)$ grows, the procedure becomes more laborious, but we prove an isomorphism theorem which helps classify all the options. We propose a tensor network approach known as the locally purified density operator (LPDO) to investigate the classification and characterization of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in open quantum systems. We extend the concept of injectivity, originally associated with matrix product states and projected entangled pair states, to LPDOs in $(1+1)D$ and $(2+1)D$ systems, unveiling two distinct types of injectivity conditions inherent in short-range entangled density matrices. Within the LPDO framework, we outline a classification scheme for decohered average symmetry-protected topological (ASPT) phases, consistent with earlier results obtained through spectrum sequence techniques. We first illustrate our framework with ASPT phases protected by fermion parity symmetry, then extend the classification of ASPT phases to a general group extension. We demonstrate examples of explicit construction of fixed-point LPDOs for ASPT phases including intrinsic ASPTs in both $(1+1)D$ and $(2+1)D$ systems., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures

In this paper we identify different classes of free group extension using core graphs. We show that every free group extension $H\leq K\leq F$ has a base $B$ such that the associated pointed graph morphism $\Gamma_{B}\left(H\right)\to\Gamma_{B}\left(H\right)$ is onto. But if we examine graphs without base points, there is an extension $\left\langle b\right\rangle \leq\left\langle b,aba^{-1}\right\rangle

Milnor's $\bar{\mu}$-invariants of links in the $3$-sphere $S^3$ vanish on any link concordant to a boundary link. In particular, they are trivial on any knot in $S^3$. Here we consider knots in thickened surfaces $\Sigma \times [0,1]$, where $\Sigma$ is closed and oriented. We construct new concordance invariants by adapting the Chen-Milnor theory of links in $S^3$ to an extension of the group of a virtual knot. A key ingredient is the Bar-Natan $\textit{Zh}$ map, which allows for a geometric interpretation of the group extension. The group extension itself was originally defined by Silver-Williams. Our extended $\bar{\mu}$-invariants obstruct concordance to homologically trivial knots in thickened surfaces. We use them to give new examples of non-slice virtual knots having trivial Rasmussen invariant, graded genus, affine index (or writhe) polynomial, and generalized Alexander polynomial. Furthermore, we complete the slice status classification of all virtual knots up to five classical crossings and reduce to four (out of 92800) the number of virtual knots up to six classical crossings having unknown slice status. Our main application is to Turaev's concordance group $\mathscr{VC}$ of long knots on surfaces. Boden and Nagel proved that the concordance group $\mathscr{C}$ of classical knots in $S^3$ embeds into the center of $\mathscr{VC}$. The Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is very successful in describing the pairing symmetry, a fundamental characterization of the broken symmetries in a paired superfluid or superconductor. However, GL theory does not describe fermionic excitations such as Bogoliubov quasiparticles or Andreev bound states that are directly related to topological properties of the superconductor. In this work, we show that the symmetries of the fermionic excitations are captured by a Projective Symmetry Group (PSG), which is a group extension of the bosonic symmetry group in the superconducting state. We further establish a correspondence between the pairing symmetry and the fermion PSG. When the normal and superconducting states share the same spin rotational symmetry, there is a simpler correspondence between the pairing symmetry and the fermion PSG, which we enumerate for all 32 crystalline point groups. We also discuss the general framework for computing PSGs when the spin rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken in the superconducting state. This PSG formalism leads to experimental consequences, and as an example, we show how a given pairing symmetry dictates the classification of topological superconductivity., Comment: 21 pages, 8 tables

Charge conjugation (C), mirror reflection (R), time reversal (T), and fermion parity $(-1)^{\rm F}$ are basic discrete spacetime and internal symmetries of the Dirac fermions. In this article, we determine the group, called the C-R-T fractionalization, which is a group extension of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm C}\times\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm R}\times\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm T}$ by the fermion parity $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm F}$, and its extension class in all spacetime dimensions $d$, for a single-particle fermion theory. For Dirac fermions, with the canonical CRT symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm CRT}$, the C-R-T fractionalization has two possibilities that only depend on spacetime dimensions $d$ modulo 8, which are order-16 nonabelian groups, including the famous Pauli group. For Majorana fermions, we determine the R-T fractionalization in all spacetime dimensions $d=0,1,2,3,4\mod8$, an order-8 abelian or nonabelian group. For Weyl fermions, we determine the C or T fractionalization in all even spacetime dimensions $d$, which is an order-4 abelian group. We only have an order-2 $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm F}$ group for Majorana-Weyl fermions. We determine the maximal number of linearly independent Dirac and Majorana mass terms and construct them explicitly. We also discuss how the conventional Dirac and Majorana mass terms break the symmetries C, R, or T. Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorems impose non-perturbative constraints on the zero-temperature phase diagrams of quantum lattice Hamiltonians (always assumed to be local in this paper). LSM theorems have recently been interpreted as the lattice counterparts to mixed 't Hooft anomalies in quantum field theories that arise from a combination of crystalline and global internal symmetry groups. Accordingly, LSM theorems have been reinterpreted as LSM anomalies. In this work, we provide a systematic diagnostic for LSM anomalies in one spatial dimension. We show that gauging subgroups of the global internal symmetry group of a quantum lattice model obeying an LSM anomaly delivers a dual quantum lattice Hamiltonian such that its internal and crystalline symmetries mix non-trivially through a group extension. This mixing of crystalline and internal symmetries after gauging is a direct consequence of the LSM anomaly, i.e., it can be used as a diagnostic of an LSM anomaly. We exemplify this procedure for a quantum spin-1/2 chain obeying an LSM anomaly resulting from combining a global internal $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}\times\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ symmetry with translation or reflection symmetry. We establish a triality of models by gauging a $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}\subset\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}\times\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ symmetry in two ways, one of which amounts to performing a Kramers-Wannier duality, while the other implements a Jordan-Wigner duality. We discuss the mapping of the phase diagram of the quantum spin-1/2 $XYZ$ chains under such a triality. We show that the deconfined quantum critical transitions between Neel and dimer orders are mapped to either topological or conventional Landau-Ginzburg transitions. Finally, we extend our results to $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n}$ clock models and provide a reinterpretation of the dual internal symmetries in terms of $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{n}$ charge and dipole symmetries., Comment: 88 pages, 6 figures

Given a complex connected reductive Lie group $G$ with a maximal torus $H\subset G$, Tits defined an extension $W_G^T$ of the corresponding Weyl group $W_G$. The extended group is supplied with an embedding into the normalizer $N_G(H)$, such that $W_G^T$ together with $H$ generate $N_G(H)$. In this paper we propose an interpretation of the Tits classical construction in terms of the maximal split real form $G(\mathbb{R})\subset G$, which leads to the simple topological description of $W^T_G$. We also consider a variation of the Tits construction associated with compact real form $U$ of $G$. In this case we define an extension $W_G^U$ of the Weyl group $W_G$, naturally embedded into the group extension $\widetilde{U}:=U\rtimes\Gamma$ of the compact real form $U$ by the Galois group $\Gamma={\rm Gal}(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R})$. Generators of $W^U_G$ are squared to identity as in the Weyl group $W_G$. However, the non-trivial action of $\Gamma$ by outer automorphisms requires $W^U_G$ to be a non-trivial extension of $W_G$. This gives a specific presentation of the maximal torus normalizer of the group extension $\widetilde{U}$. For any group $G$, the Gorenstein homological dimension ${\rm Ghd}_RG$ is defined to be the Gorenstein flat dimension of the coefficient ring $R$, which is considered as an $RG$-module with trivial group action. We prove that ${\rm Ghd}_RG < \infty$ if and only if the Gorenstein flat dimension of any $RG$-module is finite, if and only if there exists an $R$-pure $RG$-monic $R\rightarrow A$ with $A$ being $R$-flat and ${\rm Ghd}_RG = {\rm fd}_{RG}A$, where $R$ is a commutative ring with finite Gorenstein weak global dimension. As applications, properties of ${\rm Ghd}$ on subgroup, quotient group, extension of groups as well as Weyl group are investigated. Intrinsically gapless symmetry protected topological phases (igSPT) are gapless systems with SPT edge states with properties that could not arise in a gapped system with the same symmetry and dimensionality. igSPT states arise from gapless systems in which an anomaly in the low-energy (IR) symmetry group emerges from an extended anomaly-free microscopic (UV) symmetry We construct a general framework for constructing lattice models for igSPT phases with emergent anomalies classified by group cohomology, and establish a direct connection between the emergent anomaly, group-extension, and topological edge states by gauging the extending symmetry. In many examples, the edge-state protection has a physically transparent mechanism: the extending UV symmetry operations pump lower dimensional SPTs onto the igSPT edge, tuning the edge to a (multi)critical point between different SPTs protected by the IR symmetry. In two- and three- dimensional systems, an additional possibility is that the emergent anomaly can be satisfied by an anomalous symmetry-enriched topological order, which we call a quotient-symmetry enriched topological order (QSET) that is sharply distinguished from the non-anomalous UV SETs by an edge phase transition. We use cobordism theory to analyse anomalies of finite non-abelian symmetries in 4 spacetime dimensions. By applying the method of `anomaly interplay', which uses functoriality of cobordism and naturality of the $\eta$-invariant to relate anomalies in a group of interest to anomalies in other (finite or compact Lie) groups, we derive the anomaly for every representation in many examples motivated by flavour physics, including $S_3$, $A_4$, $Q_8$, and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{F}_3)$. In the case of finite abelian groups, it is well known that anomalies can be `truncated' in a way that has no effect on low-energy physics, by means of a group extension. We extend this idea to non-abelian symmetries. We show, for example, that a system with $A_4$ symmetry can be rendered anomaly-free, with only one-third as many fermions as na\"ively required, by passing to a larger symmetry. As another example, we find that a well-known model of quark and lepton masses utilising the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{F}_3)$ symmetry is anomalous, but that the anomaly can be cancelled by enlarging the symmetry to a $\mathbb{Z}/3$ extension of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{F}_3)$., Comment: 48 pages. In this paper, we recall Quillen's plus construction for high-dimensional smooth manifolds and the solution to the group extension problem. We then develop a geometric procedure due for producing a "reverse" to the plus construction, a one-sided s-cobordism called a semi-s-cobordism, when the total group of the group extension is a semi-direct product. We then use this reverse to the plus construction to produce uncountably many different one-ended manifolds called pseudo-collars, which are stackings of semi-s- cobordisms. We finally display a technique for producing "nice" one-ended open manifolds which satisfy two of the necessary and suffcient conditions for being pseudo-collarable but not the third., Comment: 69 pages, no figures. We describe an evolving and conjectural extension of the Langlands program for a class of nonlinear covering groups of algebraic origin studied by Brylinski-Deligne. In particular, we describe the construction of an L-group extension of such a covering group (over a split reductive group) due to Weissman, study some of its properties and discuss a variant of it. Using this L-group extension, we describe a local Langlands correspondence for covering (split) tori and unramified genuine representations, using work of Savin, McNamara, Weissman and W.W. Li. Finally, we define the notion of automorphic (partial) L-functions attached to genuine automorphic representations of the BD covering groups.

P-E. Caprace and N. Monod isolate the class $\mathscr{X}$ of locally compact groups for which relatively amenable closed subgroups are amenable. It is unknown if $\mathscr{X}$ is closed under group extension. In this note, we exhibit a large, group extension stable subclass of $\mathscr{X}$, which suggests $\mathscr{X}$ is indeed closed under group extension. Along the way, we produce generalizations of the class of elementary groups and obtain information on groups outside $\mathscr{X}$., Comment: Accepted version

We identify the class of elementary groups: the smallest class of totally disconnected locally compact second countable (t.d.l.c.s.c.) groups that contains the profinite groups and the discrete groups, is closed under group extensions of profinite groups and discrete groups, and is closed under countable increasing unions. We show this class enjoys robust permanence properties. In particular, it is closed under group extension, taking closed subgroups, taking Hausdorff quotients, and inverse limits. A characterization of elementary groups in terms of well-founded descriptive-set-theoretic trees is then presented. We conclude with three applications. We first prove structure results for general t.d.l.c.s.c. groups. In particular, we show a compactly generated t.d.l.c.s.c. group decomposes into elementary groups and topologically characteristically simple groups via group extension. We then prove two local-to-global structure theorems: Locally solvable t.d.l.c.s.c. groups are elementary and [A]-regular t.d.l.c.s.c. groups are elementary., Comment: Accepted version. Rota-Baxter operators for groups were recently introduced by L. Guo, H. Lang, and Y. Sheng. V. G. Bardakov and V. Gubarev showed that with each Rota-Baxter operator one can associate a skew brace. Skew braces on a group $G$ can be characterised in terms of certain gamma functions from $G$ to its automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(G)$, that are defined by a functional equation. For the skew braces obtained from a Rota-Baxter operator the corresponding gamma functions take values in the inner automorphism group $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$ of $G$. In this paper, we give a characterisation of the gamma functions on a group $G$, with values in $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$, that come from a Rota-Baxter operator, in terms of the vanishing of a certain element in a suitable second cohomology group. Exploiting this characterisation, we are able to exhibit examples of skew braces whose corresponding gamma functions take values in the inner automorphism group, but cannot be obtained from a Rota--Baxter operator. For gamma functions that can be obtained from a Rota-Baxter operators, we show how to get the latter from the former, exploiting the knowledge that a suitable central group extension splits., Comment: 14 pages; accepted for publication, Annali di Matematica Pura e Applicata

We introduce qubit substitutions in $\mathbb{Z}^m$, which have non-rectangular domains based on an endomorphism $Q$ of $\mathbb{Z}^m$ and a set $\mathcal{D}$ of coset representatives of $\mathbb{Z}^m/Q\mathbb{Z}^m$. We then focus on a specific family of qubit substitutions which we call spin substitutions, whose combinatorial definition requires a finite abelian group $G$ as its spin group. We investigate the spectral theory of the underlying subshift $(\Sigma,\mathbb{Z}^m)$. Under certain assumptions, we show that it is measure-theoretically isomorphic to a group extension of an $m$-dimensional odometer, which induces a complete decomposition of the function space $L^{2}(\Sigma,\mu)$ . This enables one to use group characters in $\widehat{G}$ to derive substitutive factors and carry out a spectral analysis on specific subspaces. We provide general sufficient criteria for the existence of pure point, absolutely continuous and singular continuous spectral measures, together with some bounds on their spectral multiplicity., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures

Let Omega^3(SU(n)) be the Lie group of based mappings from S^3 to SU(n). We construct a Lie group extension of Omega^3(SU(n)) for n>2 by the abelian group of the affine dual space of SU(n)-connections on S^3. In this article we give several improvement of J. Mickelsson's results in 1987, especially we give a precise description of the extension of those components that are not the identity component,. We also correct several argument about the extension of Omega^3(SU(2)) which seems not to be exact in Mickelsson's work, though his observation about the fact that the extension of Omega^3(SU(2)) reduces to the extension by Z_2 is correct. Then we shall investigate the adjoint representation of the Lie group extension of Omega^3(SU(n)) for n>2.

We characterise amenability of a countable group in terms of the spectral radius of the Perron-Frobenius operator associated to a group extension of a countable Markov shift and a H\"older continuous potential. This extends a result of Day for random walks and recent work of Stadlbauer for dynamical systems. Moreover, we show that, if the potential satisfies a symmetry condition with respect to the group extension, then the logarithm of the spectral radius of the Perron-Frobenius operator is given by the Gurevic pressure of the potential.

In this note, we present the theorem of extension of birational group laws in both settings of classical varieties (Weil) and schemes (Artin). We improve slightly the original proof with a more direct construction of the group extension and the systematic use of algebraic spaces, and we discuss the separation properties of the group extension. We also explain the important application to the construction of N\'eron models of abelian varieties. Let G be an n-dimensional crystallographic group (n-space group). If G is a Z-reducible, then the flat n-orbifold E^n/G has a nontrivial fibered orbifold structure. We prove that this structure can be described by a generalized Calabi construction, that is, E^n/G is represented as the quotient of the Cartesian product of two flat orbifolds under the diagonal action of a structure group of isometries. We determine the structure group and prove that it is finite if and only if the fibered orbifold structure has an orthogonally dual fibered orbifold structure. A geometric fibration of E^n/G corresponds to a space group extension 1 -> N -> G -> G/N -> 1. We give a criterion for the splitting of a space group extension in terms of the structure group action that is strong enough to detect the splitting of all the space group extensions corresponding to the standard Seifert fibrations of a compact, connected, flat 3-orbifold. If G is an arbitrary n-space group, we prove that the group Isom(E^n/G) of isometries of E^n/G is a compact Lie group whose component of the identity is a torus of dimension equal to the first Betti number of G. This implies that Isom(E^n/G) is finite if and only if G/[G,G] is finite. We describe how to classify all the geometric fibrations of compact, connected, flat n-orbifolds, over a 1-orbifold, up to affine equivalence. We apply our classification theory to the scientifically important case n = 3, and classify all the geometric fibrations of compact, connected, flat 3-orbifolds, over a 1-orbifold, up to affine equivalence., Comment: The data in Tables 1-18 has been double checked by a computer calculation. We introduce the notion of iterated group extensions, which, roughly speaking, is what one obtains by forming a group extension of a group extension. We interpret iterated extensions in terms of group cohomology, in the same way as Eilenberg-MacLane did for usual group extensions. From the E_2-spectral sequence of a group extension, there is a 6-term long exact sequence in which various cohomology groups of degree 1 or 2 appear. We give an explicit identification of each cohomology group and each morphism appearing in this long exact sequence in terms of iterated extensions and associated notions. These identifications enable us to uncover natural relations between (iterated) extensions, their automorphism groups, and their outer actions., Comment: 41 pages, LaTeX

We call a unital locally convex algebra $A$ a continuous inverse algebra if its unit group $A^\times$ is open and inversion is a continuous map. For any smooth action of a, possibly infinite-dimensional, connected Lie group $G$ on a continuous inverse algebra $A$ by automorphisms and any finitely generated projective right $A$-module $E$, we construct a Lie group extension $\hat G$ of $G$ by the group $\GL_A(E)$ of automorphisms of the $A$-module $E$. This Lie group extension is a ``non-commutative'' version of the group $\Aut(\V)$ of automorphism of a vector bundle over a compact manifold $M$, which arises for $G = \Diff(M)$, $A = C^\infty(M,\C)$ and $E = \Gamma\V$. We also identify the Lie algebra $\hat\g$ of $\hat G$ and explain how it is related to connections of the $A$-module $E$.

The Mackey-Zimmer theorem classifies ergodic group extensions $X$ of a measure-preserving system $Y$ by a compact group $K$, by showing that such extensions are isomorphic to a group skew-product $X \equiv Y \rtimes_\rho H$ for some closed subgroup $H$ of $K$. An analogous theorem is also available for ergodic homogeneous extensions $X$ of $Y$, namely that they are isomorphic to a homogeneous skew-product $Y \rtimes_\rho H/M$. These theorems have many uses in ergodic theory, for instance playing a key role in the Host-Kra structural theory of characteristic factors of measure-preserving systems. The existing proofs of the Mackey-Zimmer theorem require various "countability", "separability", or "metrizability" hypotheses on the group $\Gamma$ that acts on the system, the base space $Y$, and the group $K$ used to perform the extension. In this paper we generalize the Mackey-Zimmer theorem to "uncountable" settings in which these hypotheses are omitted, at the cost of making the notion of a measure-preserving system and a group extension more abstract. However, this abstraction is partially counteracted by the use of a "canonical model" for abstract measure-preserving systems developed in a companion paper. Let $X$ be a connected topological space and $c \in \mathrm{H}^2(X;\mathbb{Z})$ a non-zero cohomology class. A $\mathrm{Homeo}(X,c)$-bundle is a fiber bundle with fiber $X$ whose structure group reduces to the group $\mathrm{Homeo}(X,c)$ of $c$-preserving homeomorphisms of $X$. If $\mathrm{H}^1(X;\mathbb{Z}) = 0$, then a characteristic class for $\mathrm{Homeo}(X,c)$-bundles called the Dixmier-Douady class is defined via the Serre spectral sequence. We show a relation between the universal Dixmier-Douady class for foliated $\mathrm{Homeo}(X,c)$-bundles and the gauge group extension of $\mathrm{Homeo}(X,c)$. Moreover, under some assumptions, we construct a central $S^1$-extension and a group two-cocycle on $\mathrm{Homeo}(X,c)$ corresponding to the Dixmier-Douady class., Comment: 17 pages

For a group $G$, embedded in its group of permutations $B=Perm(G)$ via the left regular representation $\lambda:G\rightarrow B$, the normalizer of $\lambda(G)$ in $B$ is $\operatorname{Hol}(G)$, the holomorph of $G$. The set $\mathcal{H}(G)$ of those regular $N\leq \operatorname{Hol}(G)$ such that $N\cong G$ and $\operatorname{Norm}_B(N)=\operatorname{Hol}(G)$ is keyed to the structure of the so-called multiple holomorph of $G$, $N\!Hol(G)=\operatorname{Norm}_B(\operatorname{Hol}(G))$, in that $\mathcal{H}(G)$ is the set of conjugates of $\lambda(G)$ by $N\!Hol(G)$. We wish to generalize this by considering a certain set $\mathcal{Q}(G)$ consisting of regular subgroups $M\leq \operatorname{Hol}(G)$, where $M\cong G$, that contains $\mathcal{H}(G)$ with the property that its members mutually normalize each other. This set will generally give rise to a group $Q\!\operatorname{Hol}(G)$ which we will call the quasi-holomorph of $G$, where the orbit of $\lambda(G)$ under $Q\!\operatorname{Hol}(G)$ is $\mathcal{Q}(G)$. The multiple holomorph is a group extension of $\operatorname{Hol}(G)$ and the quasi-holomorph will contain $N\!Hol(G)$, but, when larger than $N\!Hol(G)$, is frequently a Zappa-Sz\'ep product with the holomorph.

Let $p$ be a prime number and $\mathbb{Z}_p=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. We study finite groups with abelian derived subgroup and exponent $p$ in terms of group extension data and their matrix presentations. We show a one-to-one correspondence between the following two sets: (i) the isoclasses of class 2 groups of exponent $p$ and order $p^{m+n}$ and with derived subgroup $\mathbb{Z}_p^n$, and (ii) the set $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ of orbits of $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ under the congruence action by $\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, where $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ is the set of $n$-dimensional subspaces of anti-symmetric matrices of order $m$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We give a description of the orbit spaces $\text{Gr}(2, \text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for all $m$ and $p$ by applying the theory of pencils of anti-symmetric matrices. Based on this, we show complete sets of representatives of orbits of $\text{Gr}(3,\text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$, $\text{Gr}(4, \text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ and $\text{Gr}(3, \text{AS}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3)$. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of corresponding class 2 groups of exponent $p$. In particular, we recover the classification of groups with exponent 3 and order $\le 3^8$.

This thesis contributes to the understanding of symmetry-enriched topological phases focusing on their descriptions in terms of tensor network states. The Projected Entangled Pair State (PEPS) formalism allows us to locally encode the main properties of the models (like topological order, symmetries and their interplay) in the tensors. We have used that encoding to classify, construct and detect some classes of symmetry-enriched topological phases in 2D PEPS. For that purpose, we have studied what the allowed freedom in the tensors generating the same tensor network state is. These results are the so-called 'fundamental theorems' and they give the necessary knowledge to properly study symmetries (actions that leave the states invariant). We focus our study on the family of PEPS describing quantum double models of $G$, the so-called $G$-injective PEPS, and on global on-site symmetries coming from a finite group $Q$: as a result of the classification we have a finite number of phases closely related to the theory of group extensions. We also provide the maps that appear in group extension theory with physical meaning and we characterize their actions on the ground subspace and on the anyons. We construct a representative of each class of our classification. Moreover, we connect our construction with an interesting physical phenomenon, the so-called anyon condensation, which describes topological phase transitions. We have also proposed a family of gauge invariant quantities and their corresponding order parameters (in the form of expectation values of a local operator in 2D) to detect the corresponding quantum phases, in particular their symmetry fractionalization patterns. There are fundamental open problems in the precise global nature of RR-field tadpole cancellation conditions in string theory. Moreover, the non-perturbative lift as M5/MO5-anomaly cancellation in M-theory had been based on indirect plausibility arguments,lacking a microscopic underpinning in M-brane charge quantization. We provide a framework for answering these questions, crucial not only for mathematical consistency but also for phenomenological accuracy of string theory, by formulating the M-theory C-field on flat M-orientifolds in the generalized cohomology theory called Equivariant Cohomotopy. This builds on our previous results for smooth but curved spacetimes, showing in that setting that charge quantization in twisted Cohomotopy rigorously implies a list of expected anomaly cancellation conditions. Here we further expand this list by proving that brane charge quantization in unstable equivariant Cohomotopy implies the anomaly cancellation conditions for M-branes and D-branes on flat orbi-orientifolds. For this we (a) use an unstable refinement of the equivariant Hopf-tom Dieck theorem to derive local/twisted tadpole cancellation, and (b) the lift to super-differential cohomology to establish global/untwisted tadpole cancellation. Throughout, we use (c) the unstable Pontrjagin-Thom theorem to identify the brane/O-plane configurations encoded in equivariant Cohomotopy and (d) the Boardman homomorphism to equivariant K-theory to identify Chan-Paton representations of D-brane charge. Cocycles are a key object in Antol\'{i}n Camarena and Szegedy's (topological) theory of nilspaces. We introduce measurable counterparts, named nilcycles, enabling us to give conditions which guarantee that an ergodic group extension of a strictly ergodic distal system admits a strictly ergodic distal topological model, revisiting a problem studied by Lindenstrauss. In particular we show that if the base space is a dynamical nilspace then a dynamical nilspace topological model may be chosen for the extension. This approach combined with a structure theorem of Gutman, Manners and Varj\'{u} applied to the ergodic group extensions between successive Host-Kra characteristic factors gives a new proof that these factors are inverse limit of nilsystems.

We classify time-reversal breaking (class A) spinful topological crystalline insulators with crystallographic non-magnetic (32 types) and magnetic (58 types) point groups. The classification includes all possible magnetic topological crystalline insulators protected by point group symmetry. Whereas the classification of topological insulators is known to be given by the $K$-theory in the momentum space, computation of the $K$-theory has been a difficult task in the presence of complicated crystallographic symmetry. Here we consider the $K$-homology in the real space for this problem, instead of the $K$-theory in the momentum space, both of which give the same topological classification. We apply the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence (AHSS) for computation of the $K$-homology, which is a mathematical tool for generalized (co)homology. In the real space picture, the AHSS naturally gives the classification of higher-order topological insulators at the same time. By solving the group extension problem in the AHSS on the basis of physical arguments, we completely determine possible topological phases including higher-order ones for each point group. Relationships among different higher-order topological phases are argued in terms of the AHSS in the $K$-homology. We find that in some nonmagnetic and magnetic point groups, a stack of two $\mathbb{Z}_2$ second-order topological insulators can be smoothly deformed into non-trivial fourth-order topological insulators, which implies non-trivial group extensions in the AHSS., Comment: Add E^2-pages in Appendix

We define a 3-loop group $\Omega^3G$ as a subgroup of smooth maps from a 3-ball to a Lie group $G$, and then construct a 2-group based on an automorphic action on the Mickelsson-Faddeev extension of $\Omega^3G$. In this we follow the strategy of Murray et al., who earlier described a similar construction in one dimension. The three-dimensional situation presented here is further complicated by the fact that the 3-loop group extension is not central., Comment: 13 pages

Let $(\mathcal{K},\mathcal{O},k)$ be a $p$-modular system with $k$ algebraically closed, let $b$ be a block of the normal subgroup $H$ of $G$ having defect pointed group $Q_\delta$ in $H$ and $P_\gamma$ in $G$, and consider the block extension $b\mathcal{O}G$. One may attach to $b$ an extended local category $\mathcal{E}_{(b,H,G)}$, a group extension $L$ of $Z(Q)$ by $N_G(Q_\delta)/C_H(Q)$ having $P$ as a Sylow $p$-subgroup, and a cohomology class $[\alpha]\in H^2(N_G(Q_\delta)/QC_H(Q),k^\times)$. We prove that these objects are invariant under the $G/H$-graded basic Morita equivalences. Along the way, we give alternative proofs of the results of K\"ulshammer and Puig (1990), Puig and Zhou (2012) on extensions of nilpotent blocks. We also deduce by our methods a result of Zhou (2016) on $p'$-extensions of inertial blocks.
