In 1964, Keldysh laid the groundwork for strong-field physics in atomic, molecular, and solid-state systems by delineating a ubiquitous transition from multiphoton absorption to quantum electron tunneling under intense AC driving forces. While both processes in semiconductors can generate carriers and result in photon emission through electron-hole recombination, the low quantum yields in most materials have hindered direct observation of the Keldysh crossover. Leveraging the large quantum yields of photoluminescence in lead halide perovskites, we show that we can not only induce bright light emission from extreme sub-bandgap light excitation but also distinguish between photon-induced and electric-field-induced processes. Our results are rationalized by the Landau-Dykhne formalism, providing insights into the non-equilibrium dynamics of strong-field light-matter interactions. These findings open new avenues for light upconversion and sub-bandgap photon detection, highlighting the potential of lead halide perovskites in advanced optoelectronic applications.

Floquet engineering is a novel method of manipulating quantum phases of matter via periodic driving [1, 2]. It has successfully been utilized in different platforms ranging from photonic systems [3] to optical lattice of ultracold atoms [4, 5]. In solids, light can be used as the periodic drive via coherent light-matter interaction. This leads to hybridization of Bloch electrons with photons resulting in replica bands known as Floquet-Bloch states. After the direct observation of Floquet-Bloch states in a topological insulator [6], their manifestations have been seen in a number of other experiments [7-14]. By engineering the electronic band structure using Floquet-Bloch states, various exotic phase transitions have been predicted [15-22] to occur. To realize these phases, it is necessary to better understand the nature of Floquet-Bloch states in different materials. However, direct energy and momentum resolved observation of these states is still limited to only few material systems [6, 10, 14, 23, 24]. Here, we report direct observation of Floquet-Bloch states in monolayer epitaxial graphene which was the first proposed material platform [15] for Floquet engineering. By using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) with mid-infrared (mid-IR) pump excitation, we detected replicas of the Dirac cone. Pump polarization dependence of these replica bands unequivocally shows that they originate from the scattering between Floquet-Bloch states and photon-dressed free-electron-like photoemission final states, called Volkov states. Beyond graphene, our method can potentially be used to directly observe Floquet-Bloch states in other systems paving the way for Floquet engineering in a wide range of quantum materials.

Coexisting orders are key features of strongly correlated materials and underlie many intriguing phenomena from unconventional superconductivity to topological orders. Here, we report the coexistence of two interacting charge-density-wave (CDW) orders in EuTe4, a layered crystal that has drawn considerable attention owing to its anomalous thermal hysteresis and a semiconducting CDW state despite the absence of perfect FS nesting. By accessing unoccupied conduction bands with time- and angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we find that mono- and bi-layers of Te in the unit cell host different CDWs that are associated with distinct energy gaps. The two gaps display dichotomous evolutions following photoexcitation, where the larger bilayer CDW gap exhibits less renormalization and faster recovery. Surprisingly, the CDW in the Te monolayer displays an additional momentum-dependent gap renormalization that cannot be captured by density-functional theory calculations. This phenomenon is attributed to interlayer interactions between the two CDW orders, which account for the semiconducting nature of the equilibrium state. The kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ hosts a variety of charge density wave (CDW) phases, which play a fundamental role in the formation of other exotic electronic instabilities. However, identifying the precise structure of these CDW phases and their intricate relationships remain the subject of intense debate, due to the lack of static probes that can distinguish the CDW phases with identical spatial periodicity. Here, we unveil the competition between two coexisting $2\times2\times2$ CDWs in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ harnessing time-resolved X-ray diffraction. By analyzing the light-induced changes in the intensity of CDW superlattice peaks, we demonstrate the presence of both phases, each displaying a significantly different amount of melting upon excitation. The anomalous light-induced sharpening of peak width further shows that the phase that is more resistant to photo-excitation exhibits an increase in domain size at the expense of the other, thereby showcasing a hallmark of phase competition. The control of antiferromagnets with ultrashort optical pulses has emerged as a prominent field of research. Tailored laser excitation can launch coherent spin waves at terahertz frequencies, yet a comprehensive description of their generation mechanisms is still lacking despite extensive efforts. Using terahertz emission spectroscopy, we investigate the generation of a coherent magnon mode in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$ under a range of photoexcitation conditions. By tuning the pump photon energy from transparency to resonant with a $d$-$d$ transition, we reveal a striking change in the coherent magnon's dependence on the pump polarization, indicating two distinct excitation mechanisms. Our findings provide a strategy for the manipulation of magnetic modes via photoexcitation around sub-gap electronic states., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

Utilizing ultrafast light-matter interaction to manipulate electronic states of quantum materials is an emerging area of research in condensed matter physics. It has significant implications for the development of ultrafast electronic devices of the future. However, the ability to induce long-lasting metastable electronic states yet in a fully reversible manner is a long standing challenge. Here, by using ultrafast laser excitation with distinct pulse sequences and fluences, we were able to regulate the symmetry and electronic properties in a polar charge-density-wave material EuTe4. We demonstrated the capability of nonvolatile writing and erasing the polar order, a process that is completely reversible and is achieved at room temperature in an all optical manner. Each induced state brings about modifications to the electric resistance and second harmonic generation intensity. The results point to a distinct dynamical symmetry inversion mechanism in which photoexcitation mediates the polar phases of long-range electronic order. Our finding extends the scope of nonvolatile all-optical control of electronic states to ambient conditions, thus providing possibilities for applications in ultrafast optoelectronics.

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides can exhibit markedly different electronic properties compared to their bulk counterparts. In the case of NbSe$_2$, the question of whether its charge density wave (CDW) phase is enhanced in the monolayer limit has been the subject of intense debate, primarily due to the difficulty of decoupling this order from its environment. Here, we address this challenge by using a misfit crystal that comprises NbSe$_2$ monolayers separated by SnSe rock-salt spacers, a structure that allows us to investigate a monolayer crystal embedded in a bulk matrix. We establish an effective monolayer electronic behavior of the misfit crystal by studying its transport properties and visualizing its electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission measurements. We then investigate the emergence of the CDW by tracking the temperature dependence of its collective modes. Our findings reveal a nearly sixfold enhancement in the CDW transition temperature, providing compelling evidence for the profound impact of dimensionality on charge order formation in NbSe$_2$.

Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ has attracted a lot of attention due to its structural and electronic similarities to La$_2$CuO$_4$ which is the parent compound of high-T$_c$ superconducting cuprates. It was proposed to be a strong spin-orbit coupled J$_{eff}$ = 1/2 Mott insulator, but the Mott nature of its insulating ground state and the origin of the gap have not been conclusively established. Here, we use ultrafast laser pulses to realize an insulator-metal transition in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and probe the resulting dynamics using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe a closing of the gap and the formation of weakly-renormalized electronic bands in the gap region. Comparing these observations to the expected temperature and doping evolution of Mott gaps and Hubbard bands provides clear evidence that the insulating state does not originate from Mott correlations. We instead propose a correlated band insulator picture, where antiferromagnetic correlations play a key role in the opening of the gap. More broadly, our results demonstrate that energy-momentum resolved nonequilibrium dynamics can be used to clarify the nature of equilibrium states in correlated materials.

Strong interactions between different degrees of freedom lead to exotic phases of matter with complex order parameters and emergent collective excitations. Conventional techniques, such as scattering and transport, probe the amplitudes of these excitations, but they are typically insensitive to phase. Therefore, novel methods with phase sensitivity are required to understand ground states with phase modulations and interactions that couple to the phase of collective modes. Here, by performing phase-resolved coherent phonon spectroscopy (CPS), we reveal a hidden spin-lattice coupling in a vdW antiferromagnet FePS$_{3}$ that eluded other phase-insensitive conventional probes, such as Raman and X-ray scattering. With comparative analysis and analytical calculations, we directly show that the magnetic order in FePS$_{3}$ selectively couples to the trigonal distortions through partially filled t$_{2g}$ orbitals. This magnetoelastic coupling is linear in magnetic order and lattice parameters, rendering these distortions inaccessible to inelastic scattering techniques. A new group of kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit a variety of intertwined unconventional electronic phases, which emerge from a puzzling charge density wave phase. Understanding of this parent charge order phase is crucial for deciphering the entire phase diagram. However, the mechanism of the charge density wave is still controversial, and its primary source of fluctuations - the collective modes - have not been experimentally observed. Here, we use ultrashort laser pulses to melt the charge order in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and record the resulting dynamics using femtosecond angle-resolved photoemission. We resolve the melting time of the charge order and directly observe its amplitude mode, imposing a fundamental limit for the fastest possible lattice rearrangement time. These observations together with ab-initio calculations provide clear evidence for a structural rather than electronic mechanism of the charge density wave. The ability to synthesize and control two-dimensional (2D) crystals creates numerous opportunities for studying emergent states of matter and their novel functionalities. Freestanding films provide a particularly versatile platform for materials engineering in 2D thanks to additional structural motifs not found in films adhered to a flat substrate. A ubiquitous example is wrinkles, yet little is known about how they can develop over as fast as a few picoseconds due to a lack of experimental probes to visualize their dynamics in real time at the nanoscopic scale. Here, we use ultrafast electron diffraction to directly observe light-activated wrinkling formation in a freestanding La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ film. Via a ``lock-in'' analysis of a single mode of oscillation in the diffraction peak position, intensity, and width, we are able to quantitatively reconstruct how wrinkles develop at the picosecond timescale. Contrary to the common assumption of a fixed boundary condition for freestanding films, we found that wrinkle development is associated with ultrafast delamination at the contact point between the film boundary and the underlying substrate, avoiding a strain build-up in the film. The interplay between a multitude of electronic, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom underlies the complex phase diagrams of quantum materials. Layer stacking in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is responsible for exotic electronic and magnetic properties, which inspires stacking control of two-dimensional magnetism. Beyond the interplay between stacking order and interlayer magnetism, we discover a spin-shear coupling mechanism in which a subtle shear of the atomic layers can have a profound effect on the intralayer magnetic order in a family of vdW antiferromagnets. Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction and optical linear dichroism measurements, interlayer shear is identified as the primary structural degree of freedom that couples with magnetic order. The recovery times of both shear and magnetic order upon optical excitation diverge at the magnetic ordering temperature with the same critical exponent. The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory shows that this concurrent critical slowing down arises from a linear coupling of the interlayer shear to the magnetic order, which is dictated by the broken mirror symmetry intrinsic to the monoclinic stacking. Our results highlight the importance of interlayer shear in ultrafast control of magnetic order via spin-mechanical coupling.

Electron-lattice coupling effects in low dimensional materials give rise to charge density wave (CDW) order and phase transitions. These phenomena are critical ingredients for superconductivity and predominantly occur in metallic model systems such as doped cuprates, transition metal dichalcogenides, and more recently, in Kagome lattice materials. However, CDW in semiconducting systems, specifically at the limit of low carrier concentration region, is uncommon. Here, we combine electrical transport, synchrotron X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy to discover CDW order in a quasi-one-dimensional (1D), dilute d-band semiconductor, BaTiS3, which suggests the existence of strong electron-phonon coupling. The CDW state further undergoes an unusual transition featuring a sharp increase in carrier mobility. Our work establishes BaTiS3 as a unique platform to study the CDW physics in the dilute filling limit to explore novel electronic phases.

We report a transport, thermodynamic, and spectroscopic study of the recently identified topological semiconductor ZrTe$_5$ with a focus on elucidating the connections between its band structure and unusual thermoelectric properties. Using time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) we observe a small electronic band gap and temperature dependent Fermi level which traverses from a single valence to conduction band with lowering temperature, consistent with previous reports. This low temperature Fermi surface closely matches that derived from quantum oscillations, suggesting it is reflective of the bulk electronic structure. The Seebeck and low field Nernst response is characterized by an unusually large and non-monotonic temperature evolution. We find this can be quantitatively explained using a semiclassical model based on the observed band character and a linear temperature shifting of the Fermi level. Additionally, we observe a large, non-saturating enhancement of both thermoelectric coefficients in magnetic field. We show this can be captured by the Zeeman energy associated with a large effective $g$-factor of 25.8 consistent with that derived from Lifshitz-Kosevich analysis of the quantum oscillations. Together these observations provide a comprehensive picture of ZrTe$_{5}$ as a model high mobility semiconductor and potential platform for significant magnetic field driven thermoelectricity., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

In van der Waals (vdW) materials, strong coupling between different degrees of freedom can hybridize elementary excitations into bound states with mixed character. Correctly identifying the nature and composition of these bound states is key to understanding their ground state properties and excitation spectra. Here, we use ultrafast spectroscopy to reveal bound states of d-orbitals and phonons in 2D vdW antiferromagnet NiPS3. These bound states manifest themselves through equally spaced phonon replicas in frequency domain. These states are optically dark above the N\'eel temperature and become accessible with magnetic order. By launching this phonon and spectrally tracking its amplitude, we establish the electronic origin of bound states as localized d-d excitations. Our data directly yield electron-phonon coupling strength which exceeds the highest known value in 2D systems. These results demonstrate NiPS3 as a platform to study strong interactions between spins, orbitals and lattice, and open pathways to coherent control of 2D magnets.

Charge-density-wave order in a solid can be temporarily "melted" by a strong laser pulse. Here we use the discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation on a cubic lattice to simulate the recovery of the CDW long-range phase coherence following such a pulse. Our simulations indicate that the recovery process is dramatically slowed down by the three-dimensional topological defects - CDW dislocations - created as a result of strongly nonequilibrium heating and cooling of the system. Overall, the simulated CDW recovery was found to be remarkably reminiscent of a recent pump-probe experiment in LaTe$_3$., Comment: v2. Main text: 5 pages, 4 figures. Continuous and concerted development of colloidal quantum-dot light-emitting diodes over the past two decades has established them as a bedrock technology for the next generation of displays. However, a fundamental issue that limits the performance of these devices is the quenching of photoluminescence due to excess charges from conductive charge transport layers. Although device designs have leveraged various workarounds, doing so often comes at the cost of limiting efficient charge injection. Here we demonstrate that high-field terahertz (THz) pulses can dramatically brighten quenched QDs on metallic surfaces, an effect which persists for minutes after THz irradiation. This phenomenon is attributed to the ability of the THz field to remove excess charges, thereby reducing trion and non-radiative Auger recombination. Our findings show that THz technologies can be used to suppress and control such undesired non-radiative decay, potentially in a variety of luminescent materials for future device applications., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

Engineering novel states of matter with light is at the forefront of materials research. An intensely studied direction is to realize broken-symmetry phases that are "hidden" under equilibrium conditions but can be unleashed by an ultrashort laser pulse. Despite a plethora of experimental discoveries, the nature of these orders and how they transiently appear remain unclear. To this end, we investigate a nonequilibrium charge density wave (CDW) in rare-earth tritellurides, which is suppressed in equilibrium but emerges after photoexcitation. Using a pump-pump-probe protocol implemented in ultrafast electron diffraction, we demonstrate that the light-induced CDW consists solely of order parameter fluctuations, which bear striking similarities to critical fluctuations in equilibrium despite differences in the length scale. By calculating the dynamics of CDW fluctuations in a nonperturbative model, we further show that the strength of the light-induced order is governed by the amplitude of equilibrium fluctuations. These findings highlight photoinduced fluctuations as an important ingredient for the emergence of transient orders out of equilibrium. Our results further suggest that materials with strong fluctuations in equilibrium are promising platforms to host "hidden" orders after laser excitation.

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe4. By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observed that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of EuTe4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly-coupled 3D systems. Our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.

Collective excitations of bound electron-hole pairs -- known as excitons -- are ubiquitous in condensed matter, emerging in systems as diverse as band semiconductors, molecular crystals, and proteins. Recently, their existence in strongly correlated electron materials has attracted increasing interest due to the excitons' unique coupling to spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The non-equilibrium driving of such dressed quasiparticles offers a promising platform for realizing unconventional many-body phenomena and phases beyond thermodynamic equilibrium. Here, we achieve this in the van der Waals correlated insulator NiPS$_3$ by photoexciting its newly discovered spin-orbit-entangled excitons that arise from Zhang-Rice states. By monitoring the time evolution of the terahertz conductivity, we observe the coexistence of itinerant carriers produced by exciton dissociation and the long-wavelength antiferromagnetic magnon that coherently precesses in time. These results demonstrate the emergence of a transient metallic state that preserves long-range antiferromagnetism, a phase that cannot be reached by simply tuning the temperature. Multiferroic materials have garnered wide interest for their exceptional static and dynamical magnetoelectric properties. In particular, type-II multiferroics exhibit an inversion-symmetry-breaking magnetic order which directly induces a ferroelectric polarization through various mechanisms, such as the spin-current or the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya effect. This intrinsic coupling between the magnetic and dipolar order parameters results in record-strength magnetoelectric effects. Two dimensional materials possessing such intrinsic multiferroic properties have been long sought for harnessing magnetoelectric coupling in nanoelectronic devices. Here, we report the discovery of type-II multiferroic order in a single atomic layer of the transition metal-based van der Waals material NiI2. The multiferroic state of NiI2 is characterized by a proper-screw spin helix with given handedness, which couples to the charge degrees of freedom to produce a chirality-controlled electrical polarization. We use circular dichroic Raman measurements to directly probe the magneto-chiral ground state and its electromagnon modes originating from dynamic magnetoelectric coupling. Using birefringence and second-harmonic generation measurements, we detect a highly anisotropic electronic state simultaneously breaking three-fold rotational and inversion symmetry, and supporting polar order. The evolution of the optical signatures as a function of temperature and layer number surprisingly reveals an ordered magnetic, polar state that persists down to the ultrathin limit of monolayer NiI2. These observations establish NiI2 and transition metal dihalides as a new platform for studying emergent multiferroic phenomena, chiral magnetic textures and ferroelectricity in the two-dimensional limit.

Exciting electrons in solids with intense light pulses offers the possibility of generating new states of matter through nonthermal means and controlling their macroscopic properties on femto- to picosecond timescales. One way to manipulate a solid is by altering its lattice structure, which often underlies the electronic, magnetic and other phases. Here, we review how structures of solids are affected by photoexcitation and how their ultrafast dynamics are captured with time-resolved electron diffraction and microscopy. Specifically, we survey how a strong light pulse has been used to tailor the nonequilibrium characteristics to yield on-demand properties in various material classes. In the existing literature, four main routes have been exploited to control material structures: (i) phase competition, (ii) electronic correlations, (iii) excitation of coherent modes, and (iv) defect generation. In this review, we discuss experiments relevant to all four schemes and finish by speculating about future directions.

A phonoriton is an elementary excitation that is predicted to emerge from hybridization between exciton, phonon and photon. Besides the intriguing many-particle structure, phonoritons are of interest as they could serve as functional nodes in devices that utilize electronic, phononic and photonic elements for energy conversion and thermal transport applications. Although phonoritons are predicted to emerge in an excitonic medium under intense electromagnetic wave irradiation, the stringent condition for their existence has eluded direct observation in solids. In particular, on-resonance, intense pumping scheme has been proposed but excessive photoexcitation of carriers prevents optical detection. Here we theoretically predict the appearance of phonoritonic features in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) embedded in an optical cavity. The coherent superposition nature of phonoriton states is evidenced by the hybridization of exciton-polariton branches with phonon replicas that is tunable by the cavity-matter coupling strength. This finding simultaneously provides an experimental pathway to observe the predicted phonoritons and opens a new avenue for tuning materials properties.

The excitonic insulator is an electronically-driven phase of matter that emerges upon the spontaneous formation and Bose condensation of excitons. Detecting this exotic order in candidate materials is a subject of paramount importance, as the size of the excitonic gap in the band structure establishes the potential of this collective state for superfluid energy transport. However, the identification of this phase in real solids is hindered by the coexistence of a structural order parameter with the same symmetry as the excitonic order. Only a few materials are currently believed to host a dominant excitonic phase, Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ being the most promising. Here, we test this scenario by using an ultrashort laser pulse to quench the broken-symmetry phase of this transition metal chalcogenide. Tracking the dynamics of the material's electronic and crystal structure after light excitation reveals surprising spectroscopic fingerprints that are only compatible with a primary order parameter of phononic nature. We rationalize our findings through state-of-the-art calculations, confirming that the structural order accounts for most of the electronic gap opening. Not only do our results uncover the long-sought mechanism driving the phase transition of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, but they also conclusively rule out any substantial excitonic character in this instability.

The interaction between off-resonant laser pulses and excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is attracting increasing interest as a route for the valley-selective coherent control of the exciton properties. Here, we extend the classification of the known off-resonant phenomena by unveiling the impact of a strong THz field on the excitonic resonances of monolayer MoS$_2$. We observe that the THz pump pulse causes a selective modification of the coherence lifetime of the excitons, while keeping their oscillator strength and peak energy unchanged. We rationalize these results theoretically by invoking a hitherto unobserved manifestation of the Franz-Keldysh effect on an exciton resonance. As the modulation depth of the optical absorption reaches values as large as 0.05 dB/nm at room temperature, our findings open the way to the use of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides as compact and efficient platforms for high-speed electroabsorption devices., Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures

The Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) is the first metal-insulator transition ever observed and involves a concomitant structural rearrangement and charge-orbital ordering. Due to the complex interplay of these intertwined degrees of freedom, a complete characterization of the low-temperature phase of magnetite and the mechanism driving the transition have long remained elusive. It was demonstrated in recent years that the fundamental building blocks of the charge-ordered structure are three-site small polarons called trimerons. However, electronic collective modes of this trimeron order have not been detected to date, and thus an understanding of the dynamics of the Verwey transition from an electronic point of view is still lacking. Here, we discover spectroscopic signatures of the low-energy electronic excitations of the trimeron network using terahertz light. By driving these modes coherently with an ultrashort laser pulse, we reveal their critical softening and hence demonstrate their direct involvement in the Verwey transition. The observation of chirality is ubiquitous in nature. Contrary to intuition, the population of opposite chiralities is surprisingly asymmetric at fundamental levels. Examples range from parity violation in the subatomic weak force to the homochirality in essential biomolecules. The ability to achieve chirality-selective synthesis (chiral induction) is of great importance in stereochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology. In condensed matter physics, a crystalline electronic system is geometrically chiral when it lacks any mirror plane, space inversion center or roto-inversion axis. Typically, the geometrical chirality is predefined by a material's chiral lattice structure, which is fixed upon the formation of the crystal. By contrast, a particularly unconventional scenario is the gyrotropic order, where chirality spontaneously emerges across a phase transition as the electron system breaks the relevant symmetries of an originally achiral lattice. Such a gyrotropic order, proposed as the quantum analogue of the cholesteric liquid crystals, has attracted significant interest. However, to date, a clear observation and manipulation of the gyrotropic order remain challenging. We report the realization of optical chiral induction and the observation of a gyrotropically ordered phase in the transition-metal dichalcogenide semimetal $1T$-TiSe$_2$. We show that shining mid-infrared circularly polarized light near the critical temperature leads to the preferential formation of one chiral domain. As a result, we are able to observe an out-of-plane circular photogalvanic current, whose direction depends on the optical induction. Our study provides compelling evidence for the spontaneous emergence of chirality in the correlated semimetal TiSe$_2$. Performing time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) at high momenta necessitates extreme ultraviolet laser pulses, which are typically produced via high harmonic generation (HHG). Despite recent advances, HHG-based setups still require large pulse energies (hundreds of $\mu$J to mJ) and their energy resolution is limited to tens of meV. Here, we present a novel 11 eV tr-ARPES setup that generates a flux of $5\times10^{10}$ photons/s and achieves an unprecedented energy resolution of 16 meV. It can be operated at high repetition rates (up to 250 kHz) while using input pulse energies down to 3 $\mu$J. We demonstrate these unique capabilities by simultaneously capturing the energy and momentum resolved dynamics in two well-separated momentum space regions of a charge density wave material ErTe$_3$. This novel setup offers opportunity to study the non-equilibrium band structure of solids with exceptional energy and time resolutions at high repetition rates.

Upon excitation by a laser pulse, broken-symmetry phases of a wide variety of solids demonstrate similar order parameter dynamics characterized by a dramatic slowing down of relaxation for stronger pump fluences. Motivated by this recurrent phenomenology, we develop a simple non-perturbative effective model of dynamics of collective bosonic excitations in pump-probe experiments. We find that as the system recovers after photoexcitation, it shows universal prethermalized dynamics manifesting a power-law, as opposed to exponential, relaxation, explaining the slowing down of the recovery process. For strong quenches, long-wavelength over-populated transverse modes dominate the long-time dynamics; their distribution function exhibits universal scaling in time and space, whose universal exponents can be computed analytically. Our model offers a unifying description of order parameter fluctuations in a regime far from equilibrium, and our predictions can be tested with available time-resolved techniques.

The notion of spontaneous symmetry breaking has been used to describe phase transitions in a variety of physical systems. In crystalline solids, the breaking of certain symmetries, such as mirror symmetry, is difficult to detect unambiguously. Using 1$T$-TaS$_2$, we demonstrate here that rotational-anisotropy second harmonic generation (RA-SHG) is not only a sensitive technique for the detection of broken mirror symmetry, but also that it can differentiate between mirror symmetry-broken structures of opposite planar chirality. We also show that our analysis is applicable to a wide class of different materials with mirror symmetry-breaking transitions. Lastly, we find evidence for bulk mirror symmetry-breaking in the incommensurate charge density wave phase of 1$T$-TaS$_2$. Revealing the spin excitations of complex quantum magnets is key to developing a minimal model that explains the underlying magnetic correlations in the ground state. We investigate the low-energy magnons in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ by combining time-domain terahertz spectroscopy under an external magnetic field and model Hamiltonian calculations. We observe two absorption peaks around 2.0 and 2.4 meV, which we attribute to zone-center spin waves. Using linear spin-wave theory with only nearest-neighbor terms of the exchange couplings, we calculate the antiferromagnetic resonance frequencies and reveal their dependence on an external field applied parallel to the nearest-neighbor Ru-Ru bonds. We find that the magnon behavior in an applied magnetic field can be understood only by including an off-diagonal $\Gamma$ exchange term to the minimal Heisenberg-Kitaev model. Such an anisotropic exchange interaction that manifests itself as a result of strong spin-orbit coupling can naturally account for the observed mixing of the modes at higher fields strengths., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Recent theoretical advances have proposed a new class of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phases protected by rotational symmetries. Distinct from topological insulators (TIs), rotational symmetry-protected TCIs are expected to show unique topologically protected boundary modes: First, the surface normal to the rotational axis features unpinned Dirac surface states whose Dirac points are located at generic k points. Second, due to the higher-order bulk boundary correspondence, a 3D TCI also supports 1D helical edge states. Despite the unique topological electronic properties, to date, purely rotational symmetry-protected TCIs remain elusive in real materials. Using first-principles band calculations and theoretical modeling, we identify the van der Waals material $\alpha$-Bi4Br4 as a TCI purely protected by rotation symmetry. We show that the Bi4Br4's (010) surface exhibits a pair of unpinned topological Dirac fermions protected by the two-fold rotational axis. These unpinned Dirac fermions show an exotic spin texture highly favorable for spin transport and a band structure consisting of van Hove singularities due to Lifshitz transition. We also identify 1D topological hinge states along the edges of an $\alpha$-Bi4Br4 rod. We further discuss how the proposed topological electronic properties in $\alpha$-Bi4Br4 can be observed by various experimental techniques.

We formulate a dynamical model to describe a photo-induced charge density wave (CDW) quench transition and apply it to recent multi-probe experiments on LaTe$_3$ [A. Zong et al., Nat. Phys. 15, 27 (2019)]. Our approach relies on coupled time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations tracking two order parameters that represent the modulations of the electronic density and the ionic positions. We aim at describing the amplitude of the order parameters under the assumption that they are homogeneous in space. This description is supplemented by a three-temperature model, which treats separately the electronic temperature, temperature of the lattice phonons with stronger couplings to the electronic subsystem, and temperature of all other phonons. The broad scope of available data for LaTe$_3$ and similar materials as well as the synergy between different time-resolved spectroscopies allow us to extract model parameters. The resulting calculations are in good agreement with ultra-fast electron diffraction experiments, reproducing qualitative and quantitative features of the CDW amplitude evolution during the initial few picoseconds after photoexcitation., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures; this version is almost identical to the published version; comparing to the earlier arXiv submission, current version contains a new figure (Fig.10), and a broader discussion of theoretical results and approximations

When electrons in a solid are excited with light, they can alter the free energy landscape and access phases of matter that are beyond reach in thermal equilibrium. This accessibility becomes of vast importance in the presence of phase competition, when one state of matter is preferred over another by only a small energy scale that, in principle, is surmountable by light. Here, we study a layered compound, LaTe$_3$, where a small in-plane (a-c plane) lattice anisotropy results in a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) along the c-axis. Using ultrafast electron diffraction, we find that after photoexcitation, the CDW along the c-axis is weakened and subsequently, a different competing CDW along the a-axis emerges. The timescales characterizing the relaxation of this new CDW and the reestablishment of the original CDW are nearly identical, which points towards a strong competition between the two orders. The new density wave represents a transient non-equilibrium phase of matter with no equilibrium counterpart, and this study thus provides a framework for unleashing similar states of matter that are "trapped" under equilibrium conditions.

Complex systems, which consist of a large number of interacting constituents, often exhibit universal behavior near a phase transition. A slowdown of certain dynamical observables is one such recurring feature found in a vast array of contexts. This phenomenon, known as critical slowing down, is well studied mostly in thermodynamic phase transitions. However, it is less understood in highly nonequilibrium settings, where the time it takes to traverse the phase boundary becomes comparable to the timescale of dynamical fluctuations. Using transient optical spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction, we studied a photo-induced transition of a model charge-density-wave (CDW) compound, LaTe$_3$. We observed that it takes the longest time to suppress the order parameter at the threshold photoexcitation density, where the CDW transiently vanishes. This finding can be quantitatively captured by generalizing the time-dependent Landau theory to a system far from equilibrium. The experimental observation and theoretical understanding of dynamical slowing down may offer insight into other general principles behind nonequilibrium phase transitions in many-body systems.

When the Fermi level matches the Dirac point in graphene, the reduced charge screening can dramatically enhance electron-electron (e-e) scattering to produce a strongly interacting Dirac liquid. While the dominance of e-e scattering already leads to novel behaviors, such as electron hydrodynamic flow, further exotic phenomena have been predicted to arise specifically from the unique kinematics of e-e scattering in massless Dirac systems. Here, we use optoelectronic probes, which are highly sensitive to the kinematics of electron scattering, to uncover a giant intrinsic photocurrent response in pristine graphene. This photocurrent emerges exclusively at the charge neutrality point and vanishes abruptly at non-zero charge densities. Moreover, it is observed at places with broken reflection symmetry, and it is selectively enhanced at free graphene edges with sharp bends. Our findings reveal that the photocurrent relaxation is strongly suppressed by a drastic change of fast photocarrier kinematics in graphene when its Fermi level matches the Dirac point. The emergence of robust photocurrents in neutral Dirac materials promises new energy-harvesting functionalities and highlights intriguing electron dynamics in the optoelectronic response of Dirac fluids., Comment: Originally submitted version

Domain walls (DWs) are singularities in an ordered medium that often host exotic phenomena such as charge ordering, insulator-metal transition, or superconductivity. The ability to locally write and erase DWs is highly desirable, as it allows one to design material functionality by patterning DWs in specific configurations. We demonstrate such capability at room temperature in a charge density wave (CDW), a macroscopic condensate of electrons and phonons, in ultrathin 1T-TaS$_2$. A single femtosecond light pulse is shown to locally inject or remove mirror DWs in the CDW condensate, with probabilities tunable by pulse energy and temperature. Using time-resolved electron diffraction, we are able to simultaneously track anti-synchronized CDW amplitude oscillations from both the lattice and the condensate, where photo-injected DWs lead to a red-shifted frequency. Our demonstration of reversible DW manipulation may pave new ways for engineering correlated material systems with light.

The electrical Hall effect is the production of a transverse voltage under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Historically, studies of the Hall effect have led to major breakthroughs including the discoveries of Berry curvature and the topological Chern invariants. In magnets, the internal magnetization allows Hall conductivity in the absence of external magnetic field. This anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has become an important tool to study quantum magnets. In nonmagnetic materials without external magnetic fields, the electrical Hall effect is rarely explored because of the constraint by time-reversal symmetry. However, strictly speaking, only the Hall effect in the linear response regime, i.e., the Hall voltage linearly proportional to the external electric field, identically vanishes due to time-reversal symmetry. The Hall effect in the nonlinear response regime, on the other hand, may not be subject to such symmetry constraints. Here, we report the observation of the nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) in the electrical transport of the nonmagnetic 2D quantum material, bilayer WTe2. Specifically, flowing an electrical current in bilayer WTe2 leads to a nonlinear Hall voltage in the absence of magnetic field. The NLHE exhibits unusual properties sharply distinct from the AHE in metals: The NLHE shows a quadratic I-V characteristic; It strongly dominates the nonlinear longitudinal response, leading to a Hall angle of about 90 degree. We further show that the NLHE directly measures the "dipole moment" of the Berry curvature, which arises from layer-polarized Dirac fermions in bilayer WTe2. Our results demonstrate a new Hall effect and provide a powerful methodology to detect Berry curvature in a wide range of nonmagnetic quantum materials in an energy-resolved way.

Recent experimental evidence for the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state in monolayer WTe$_2$ has bridged two of the most active fields of condensed matter physics, 2D materials and topological physics. This 2D topological crystal also displays unconventional spin-torque and gate-tunable superconductivity. While the realization of QSH has demonstrated the nontrivial topology of the electron wavefunctions of monolayer WTe$_2$, the geometrical properties of the wavefunction, such as the Berry curvature, remain unstudied. On the other hand, it has been increasingly recognized that the Berry curvature plays an important role in multiple areas of condensed matter physics including nonreciprocal electron transport, enantioselective optical responses, chiral polaritons and even unconventional superconductivity. Here we utilize mid-infrared optoelectronic microscopy to investigate the Berry curvature in monolayer WTe$_2$. By optically exciting electrons across the inverted QSH gap, we observe an in-plane circular photogalvanic current even under normal incidence. The application of an out-of-plane displacement field further systematically controls the direction and magnitude of the photocurrent. Our observed photocurrent reveals a novel Berry curvature dipole that arises from the nontrivial wavefunctions near the inverted gap edge. These previously unrealized Berry curvature dipole and strong electric field effect are uniquely enabled by the inverted band structure and tilted crystal lattice of monolayer WTe$_2$. Upon excitation with an intense ultrafast laser pulse, a symmetry-broken ground state can undergo a non-equilibrium phase transition through pathways dissimilar from those in thermal equilibrium. Determining the mechanism underlying these photo-induced phase transitions (PIPTs) has been a long-standing issue in the study of condensed matter systems. To this end, we investigate the light-induced melting of a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) material, LaTe$_3$. Using a suite of time-resolved probes, we independently track the amplitude and phase dynamics of the CDW. We find that a quick ($\sim\,$1$\,$ps) recovery of the CDW amplitude is followed by a slower reestablishment of phase coherence. This longer timescale is dictated by the presence of topological defects: long-range order (LRO) is inhibited and is only restored when the defects annihilate. Our results provide a framework for understanding other PIPTs by identifying the generation of defects as a governing mechanism.

Topological crystalline insulators (TCI) are insulating electronic phases of matter with nontrivial topology originating from crystalline symmetries. Recent theoretical advances have provided powerful guidelines to search for TCIs in real materials. Using density functional theory, we identify a class of new TCI states in the tetragonal lattice of the Ca$_2$As material family. On both top and side surfaces, we observe topological surface states protected independently by rotational and mirror symmetries. We show that a particular lattice distortion can single out the newly proposed topological protection by the rotational symmetry. As a result, the Dirac points of the topological surface states are moved to generic locations in momentum space away from any high symmetry lines. Such topological surface states have not been seen before. Moreover, the other family members, including Ca$_2$Sb, Ca$_2$Bi and Sr$_2$Sb, feature different topological surface states due to their distinct topological invariants. We thus further propose topological phase transitions in the pseudo-binary systems such as (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)$_2$As and Ca$_2$As$_x$Sb$_{1-x}$. Our work reveals rich and exotic TCI physics across the Ca$_2$As family of materials, and suggests the feasibility of materials database search methods to discover new TCIs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report a rare atom-like interaction between excitons in monolayer WS2, measured using ultrafast absorption spectroscopy. At increasing excitation density, the exciton resonance energy exhibits a pronounced redshift followed by an anomalous blueshift. Using both material-realistic computation and phenomenological modeling, we attribute this observation to plasma effects and an attraction-repulsion crossover of the exciton-exciton interaction that mimics the Lennard-Jones potential between atoms. Our experiment demonstrates a strong analogy between excitons and atoms with respect to inter-particle interaction, which holds promise to pursue the predicted liquid and crystalline phases of excitons in two-dimensional materials.

The valley pseudospin in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been proposed as a new way to manipulate information in various optoelectronic devices. This relies on a large valley polarization that remains stable over long timescales (hundreds of ns). However, time resolved measurements report valley lifetimes of only a few ps. This has been attributed to mechanisms such as phonon-mediated inter-valley scattering and a precession of the valley psedospin through electron-hole exchange. Here we use transient spin grating to directly measure the valley depolarization lifetime in monolayer MoSe$_{2}$. We find a fast valley decay rate that scales linearly with the excitation density at different temperatures. This establishes the presence of strong exciton-exciton Coulomb exchange interactions enhancing the valley depolarization. Our work highlights the microscopic processes inhibiting the efficient use of the exciton valley pseudospin in monolayer TMDs.

Heterostructures of topological insulators and ferromagnets offer new opportunities in spintronics and a route to novel anomalous Hall states. In one such structure, EuS/Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ a dramatic enhancement of the Curie temperature was recently observed. We performed Raman spectroscopy on a similar set of thin films to investigate the magnetic and lattice excitations. Interfacial strain was monitored through its effects on the Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ phonon modes while the magnetic system was probed through the EuS Raman mode. Despite its appearance in bare EuS, the heterostructures lack the corresponding EuS Raman signal. Through numerical calculations we rule out the possibility of Fabry-Perot interference suppressing the mode. We attribute the absence of a magnetic signal in EuS to a large charge transfer with the Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. This could provide an additional pathway for manipulating the magnetic, optical, or electronic response of topological heterostructures., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The combination of ferromagnets with topological superconductors or insulators allows for new phases of matter that support excitations such as chiral edge modes and Majorana fermions. EuS, a wide-band-gap ferromagnetic insulator with a Curie temperature around 16 K, and SrTiO$_3$ (STO), an important substrate for engineering heterostructures, may support these phases. We present scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements of EuS grown epitaxially on STO that reveal micron-scale variations in ferromagnetism and paramagnetism. These variations are oriented along the STO crystal axes and only change their configuration upon thermal cycling above the STO cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition temperature at 105 K, indicating that the observed magnetic features are due to coupling between EuS and the STO tetragonal structure. We speculate that the STO tetragonal distortions may strain the EuS, altering the magnetic anisotropy on a micron-scale. This result demonstrates that local variation in the induced magnetic order from EuS grown on STO needs to be considered when engineering new phases of matter that require spatially homogeneous exchange.

A Weyl semimetal (WSM) is a novel topological phase of matter, in which Weyl fermions (WFs) arise as pseudo-magnetic monopoles in its momentum space. The chirality of the WFs, given by the sign of the monopole charge, is central to the Weyl physics, since it directly serves as the sign of the topological number and gives rise to exotic properties such as Fermi arcs and the chiral anomaly. Despite being the defining property of a WSM, the chirality of the WFs has never been experimentally measured. Here, we directly detect the chirality of the WFs by measuring the photocurrent in response to circularly polarized mid-infrared light. The resulting photocurrent is determined by both the chirality of WFs and that of the photons. Our results pave the way for realizing a wide range of theoretical proposals for studying and controlling the WFs and their associated quantum anomalies by optical and electrical means. Coherent light-matter interaction can be used to manipulate the energy levels of atoms, molecules and solids. When light with frequency {\omega} is detuned away from a resonance {\omega}o, repulsion between the photon-dressed (Floquet) states can lead to a shift of energy resonance. The dominant effect is the optical Stark shift (1/({\omega}0-{\omega})), but there is an additional contribution from the so-called Bloch-Siegert shift (1/({\omega}o+{\omega})). Although it is common in atoms and molecules, the observation of Bloch-Siegert shift in solids has so far been limited only to artificial atoms since the shifts were small (<1 {\mu}eV) and inseparable from the optical Stark shift. Here we observe an exceptionally large Bloch-Siegert shift (~10 meV) in monolayer WS2 under infrared optical driving by virtue of the strong light-matter interaction in this system. Moreover, we can disentangle the Bloch-Siegert shift entirely from the optical Stark shift, because the two effects are found to obey opposite selection rules at different valleys. By controlling the light helicity, we can confine the Bloch-Siegert shift to occur only at one valley, and the optical Stark shift at the other valley. Such a valley-exclusive Bloch-Siegert shift allows for enhanced control over the valleytronic properties in two-dimensional materials, and offers a new avenue to explore quantum optics in solids.

Coherent optical dressing of quantum materials offers technological advantages to control their electronic properties, such as the electronic valley degree of freedom in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here, we observe a new type of optical Stark effect in monolayer WS2, one that is mediated by intervalley biexcitons under the blue-detuned driving with circularly polarized light. We found that such helical optical driving not only induces an exciton energy downshift at the excitation valley, but also causes an anomalous energy upshift at the opposite valley, which is normally forbidden by the exciton selection rules but now made accessible through the intervalley biexcitons. These findings reveal the critical, but hitherto neglected, role of biexcitons to couple the two seemingly independent valleys, and to enhance the optical control in valleytronics.

Zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters are fundamentally tied to the geometries of metal ion complexes. Despite their critical importance for understanding the magnetism and spectroscopy of metal complexes, they are not routinely available through general laboratory-based techniques, and are often inferred from magnetism data. Here we demonstrate a simple tabletop experimental approach that enables direct and reliable determination of ZFS parameters in the terahertz (THz) regime. We report time-domain measurements of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals associated with THz-frequency ZFSs in molecular complexes containing high-spin transition-metal ions. We measure the temporal profiles of the free-induction decays of spin resonances in the complexes at zero and nonzero external magnetic fields, and we derive the EPR spectra via numerical Fourier transformation of the time-domain signals. In most cases, absolute values of the ZFS parameters are extracted from the measured zero-field EPR frequencies, and the signs can be determined by zero-field measurements at two different temperatures. Field-dependent EPR measurements further allow refined determination of the ZFS parameters and access to the g-factor. The results show good agreement with those obtained by other methods. We use a three-pulse ultrafast optical spectroscopy to study the relaxation processes in a frustrated Mott insulator Na$_2$IrO$_3$. By being able to independently produce the out-of-equilibrium bound states (excitons) of doublons and holons with the first pulse and suppress the underlying antiferromagnetic order with the second one, we were able to elucidate the relaxation mechanism of quasiparticles in this system. By observing the difference in the exciton dynamics in the magnetically ordered and disordered phases we found that the mass of this quasiparticle is mostly determined by its interaction with the surrounding spins.
