We study a random polynomial of degree $n$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the coefficients are independent and identically distributed and uniformly chosen from the squares in $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our main result demonstrates that the likelihood of such a polynomial being irreducible approaches $1/n + O(q^{-1/2})$ as the field size $q$ grows infinitely large. The analysis we employ also applies to polynomials with coefficients selected from other specific sets.

Let $f(t_1, \ldots, t_r, X)\in \mathbb{Z}[t_1, \ldots, t_r,X]$ be irreducible and let $a_1, \ldots, a_r\in \mathbb{Z} \smallsetminus \{0,\pm 1\}$. Under a necessary ramification assumption on $f$, and conditionally on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we show that for almost all integers $n_1, \ldots, n_r$, the polynomial $f(a_1^{n_1}, \ldots, a_r^{n_r}, X)$ is irreducible in $\mathbb{Q}[X]$.

Choose a polynomial $f$ uniformly at random from the set of all monic polynomials of degree $n$ with integer coefficients in the box $[-L,L]^n$. The main result of the paper asserts that if $L=L(n)$ grows to infinity, then the Galois group of $f$ is the full symmetric group, asymptotically almost surely, as $n\to \infty$. When $L$ grows rapidly to infinity, say $L>n^7$, this theorem follows from a result of Gallagher. When $L$ is bounded, the analog of the theorem is open, while the state-of-the-art is that the Galois group is large in the sense that it contains the alternating group (if $L< 17$, it is conditional on the general Riemann hypothesis). Hence the most interesting case of the theorem is when $L$ grows slowly to infinity. Our method works for more general independent coefficients.

We study the preservation of the Hilbert property and of the weak Hilbert property under base change in field extensions. In particular we show that these properties are preserved if the extension is finitely generated or Galois with finitely generated Galois group, and we also obtain some negative results.

We study product sets of finite arithmetic progressions of polynomials over a finite field. We prove a lower bound for the size of the product set, uniform in a wide range of parameters. We study the distribution of the Galois group of a random $q$-additive polynomial over a rational function field: For $q$ a power of a prime $p$, let $f=X^{q^n}+a_{n-1}X^{q^{n-1}}+\ldots+a_1X^q+a_0X$ be a random polynomial chosen uniformly from the set of $q$-additive polynomials of degree $n$ and height $d$, that is, the coefficients are independent uniform polynomials of degree ${\rm deg}\, a_i\leq d$. The Galois group $G_f$ is a random subgroup of ${\rm GL}_n(q)$. Our main result shows that $G_f$ is almost surely large as $d,q$ are fixed and $n\to \infty$. For example, we give necessary and sufficient conditions so that ${\rm SL}_n(q)\leq G_f$ asymptotically almost surely. Our proof uses the classification of maximal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_n(q)$. The paper studies the probability for a Galois group of a random polynomial to be $A_n$. We focus on the so-called large box model, where we choose the coefficients of the polynomial independently and uniformly from $\{-L,\ldots, L\}$. The state-of-the-art upper bound is $O(L^{-1})$, due to Bhargava. We conjecture a much stronger upper bound $L^{-n/2 +\epsilon}$, and that this bound is essentially sharp. We prove strong lower bounds both on this probability and on the related probability of the discriminant being a square.

We study rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties over certain infinite Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. In particular, we prove that every elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ has the weak Hilbert property of Corvaja-Zannier both over the maximal abelian extension $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm ab}$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, and over the field $\mathbb{Q}(A_{\rm tor})$ obtained by adjoining to $\mathbb{Q}$ all torsion points of some abelian variety $A$ over $\mathbb{Q}$., Comment: preliminaries section shortened, minor corrections

Let $G$ be a connected linear algebraic group over a number field $K$, let $\Gamma$ be a finitely generated Zariski dense subgroup of $G(K)$ and let $Z\subseteq G(K)$ be a thin set, in the sense of Serre. We prove that, if $G/\mathrm{R}_u(G)$ is semisimple and $Z$ satisfies certain necessary conditions, then a long random walk on a Cayley graph of $\Gamma$ hits elements of $Z$ with negligible probability. We deduce corollaries to Galois covers, characteristic polynomials, and fixed points in group actions. We also prove analogous results in the case where $K$ is a global function field.

We study the minimal number of ramified primes in Galois extensions of rational function fields over finite fields with prescribed finite Galois group. In particular, we obtain a general conjecture in analogy with the well studied case of number fields, which we establish for abelian, symmetric and alternating groups in many cases., Comment: v3: minor changes

Inspired by the work of Schur on the Taylor series of the exponential and Laguerre polynomials, we study the Galois theory of trimmed exponentials $f_{n,n+k}=\sum_{i=0}^{k} \frac{x^{i}}{(n+i)!}$ and of the generalized Laguerre polynomials $L^{(n)}_k$ of degree $k$. We show that if $n$ is chosen uniformly from $\{1,\ldots, x\}$, then, asymptotically almost surely, for all $k\leq x^{o(1)}$ the Galois groups of $f_{n,n+k}$ and of $L_{k}^{(n)}$ are the full symmetric group $S_k$.

Let $\mu$ be a probability measure on $\mathbb{Z}$ that is not a Dirac mass and that has finite support. We prove that if the coefficients of a monic polynomial $f(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[x]$ of degree $n$ are chosen independently at random according to $\mu$ while ensuring that $f(0)\neq0$, then there is a positive constant $\theta=\theta(\mu)$ such that $f(x)$ has no divisors of degree $\le \theta n$ with probability that tends to 1 as $n\to\infty$. Furthermore, in certain cases, we show that a random polynomial $f(x)$ with $f(0)\neq0$ is irreducible with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$. In particular, this is the case if $\mu$ is the uniform measure on a set of at least 35 consecutive integers, or on a subset of $[-H,H]\cap\mathbb{Z}$ of cardinality $\ge H^{4/5}(\log H)^2$ with $H$ sufficiently large. In addition, in all of these settings, we show that the Galois group of $f(x)$ is either $\mathcal{A}_n$ or $\mathcal{S}_n$ with high probability. Finally, when $\mu$ is the uniform measure on a finite arithmetic progression of at least two elements, we prove a random polynomial $f(x)$ as above is irreducible with probability $\ge\delta$ for some constant $\delta=\delta(\mu)>0$. An old open problem in number theory is whether Chebotarev density theorem holds in short intervals. More precisely, given a Galois extension $E$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group $G$, a conjugacy class $C$ in $G$ and an $1\geq \varepsilon>0$, one wants to compute the asymptotic of the number of primes $x\leq p\leq x+x^{\varepsilon}$ with Frobenius conjugacy class in $E$ equal to $C$. The level of difficulty grows as $\varepsilon$ becomes smaller. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, one can merely reach the regime $1\geq\varepsilon>1/2$. We establish a function field analogue of Chebotarev theorem in short intervals for any $\varepsilon>0$. Our result is valid in the limit when the size of the finite field tends to $\infty$ and when the extension is tamely ramified at infinity. We present a new killing-a-fly-with-a-sledgehammer proof of one of the oldest results in probability which says that the probability that a random permutation on $n$ elements has no fixed points tends to $e^{-1}$ as $n$ tends to infinity. We present the geometry lying behind counting twin prime polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ in general. We compute cohomology and explicitly count points by means of a twisted Lefschetz trace formula applied to these parametrizing varieties for cubic twin prime polynomials. The elliptic curve $X^3 = Y(Y-1)$ occurs in the geometry, and thus counting cubic twin prime polynomials involves the associated modular form. In theory, this approach can be extended to higher degree twin primes, but the computations become harder. The formula we get in degree $3$ is compatible with the Hardy-Littlewood heuristic on average, agrees with the prediction for $q \equiv 2 \pmod 3$ but shows anomalies for $q \equiv 1 \pmod 3$., Comment: minor changes

In this paper we study the number of rational points on curves in an ensemble of abelian covers of the projective line: Let $\ell$ be a prime, $q$ a prime power and consider the ensemble $\mathcal{H}_{g,\ell}$ of $\ell$-cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ of genus $g$. We investigate a function field analogue of a recent conjecture on autocorrelations of sums of two squares by Freiberg, Kurlberg and Rosenzweig, which generalizes an older conjecture by Connors and Keating. In particular, we provide extensive numerical evidence and prove it in the large finite field limit. Our method can also handle correlations of other arithmetic functions and we give applications to (function field analogues of) the average of sums of two squares on shifted primes, and to autocorrelations of higher divisor functions twisted by a quadratic character.

The minimal ramification problem may be considered as a quantitative version of the inverse Galois problem. For a nontrivial finite group $G$, let $m(G)$ be the minimal integer $m$ for which there exists a Galois extension $N/\mathbb{Q}$ that is ramified at exactly $m$ primes (including the infinite one). So, the problem is to compute or to bound $m(G)$. In this paper, we bound the ramification of extensions $N/\mathbb{Q}$ obtained as a specialization of a branched covering $\phi\colon C\to \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{Q}}$. This leads to novel upper bounds on $m(G)$, for finite groups $G$ that are realizable as the Galois group of a branched covering. Some instances of our general results are: $$ 1\leq m(S_m)\leq 4 \quad \mbox{and} \quad n\leq m(S_m^n) \leq n+4, $$ for all $n,m>0$. Here $S_m$ denotes the symmetric group on $m$ letters, and $S_m^n$ is the direct product of $n$ copies of $S_m$. We also get the correct asymptotic of $m(G^n)$, as $n \to \infty$ for a certain class of groups $G$. Our methods are based on sieve theory results, in particular on the Green-Tao-Ziegler theorem on prime values of linear forms in two variables, on the theory of specialization in arithmetic geometry, and on finite group theory.

We study the number of ramified prime numbers in finite Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ obtained by specializing a finite Galois extension of $\mathbb{Q}(T)$. Landau's theorem asserts that the asymptotic density of sums of two squares in the interval $1\leq n\leq x$ is $K/{\sqrt{\log x}}$, where $K$ is the Landau-Ramanujan constant. It is an old problem in number theory whether the asymptotic density remains the same in intervals $|n-x|\leq x^{\epsilon}$ for a fixed $\epsilon$ and $x\to \infty$. This work resolves a function field analogue of this problem, in the limit of a large finite field. More precisely, consider monic $f_0\in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ of degree $n$ and take $\epsilon$ with $1>\epsilon\geq \frac2n$. Then the asymptotic density of polynomials $f$ in the `interval' ${\rm deg}(f-f_0)\leq \epsilon n$ that are of the form $f=A^2+TB^2$, $A,B\in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is $\frac{1}{4^n}\binom{2n}{n}$ as $q\to \infty$. This density agrees with the asymptotic density of such monic $f$'s of degree $n$ as $q\to \infty$, as was shown by the second author, Smilanski, and Wolf. A key point in the proof is the calculation of the Galois group of $f(-T^2)$, where $f$ is a polynomial of degree $n$ with a few variable coefficients: The Galois group is the hyperoctahedral group of order $2^nn!$.

This paper deals with function field analogues of the famous theorem of Landau which gives the asymptotic density of sums of two squares in $\mathbb{Z}$. We define the analogue of a sum of two squares in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ and estimate the number $B_q(n)$ of such polynomials of degree $n$ in two cases. The first case is when $q$ is large and $n$ fixed and the second case is when $n$ is large and $q$ is fixed. Although the methods used and main terms computed in each of the two cases differ, the two iterated limits of (a normalization of) $B_q(n)$ turn out to be exactly the same.

In this paper we establish a function field analogue of a conjecture in number theory which is a combination of several famous conjectures, including the Hardy-Littlewood prime tuple conjecture, conjectures on the number of primes in arithmetic progressions and in short intervals, and the Goldbach conjecture. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of simultaneous prime values of $n$ linear functions, in the limit of a large finite field.

We describe the Sylow subgroups of Gal(Q) for an odd prime p, by observing and studying their decomposition as a semidirect product of Z_p acting on F, where F is a free pro-p group, and Z_p are the p-adic integers. We determine the finite Z_p-quotients of F and more generally show that every split embedding problem of Z_p-groups for F is solvable. Moreover, we analyze the Z_p-action on generators of F.

A variety X over a field K is of Hilbert type if the set of rational points X(K) is not thin. We prove that if f: X\to S is a dominant morphism of K-varieties and both S and all fibers f^{-1}(s), s in S(K), are of Hilbert type, then so is X. We apply this to answer a question of Serre on products of varieties and to generalize a result of Colliot-Th'el`ene and Sansuc on algebraic groups., Comment: We added a corollary on homogeneous spaces, and slightly generalized the formulation of the main result

In this paper we establish function field versions of two classical conjectures on prime numbers. The first says that the number of primes in intervals (x,x+x^epsilon] is about x^epsilon/log x and the second says that the number of primes p1 and m\geq 3 if q is even and deg f' \leq 1. We show that this estimation fails in the neglected cases. Let \pi_q(k) be the number of monic prime polynomials of degree k with coefficients in the finite field with q elements \FF_q. For relatively prime polynomials f,D\in \FF_q[t] we prove that the number N' of monic prime polynomials g that are congruent to f modulo D and of degree k satisfies |N'-\pi_q(k)/\phi(D)|\leq c(k)\pi_q(k)q^{-1/2}/\phi(D), as long as 1\leq \deg D\leq k-3 (or \leq k-4 if p=2 and (f/D)' is constant). Let $\Pi$ be the \'etale fundamental group of a smooth affine curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We establish a criterion for profinite freeness of closed subgroups of $\Pi$. Roughly speaking, if a closed subgroup of $\Pi$ is "captured" between two normal subgroups, then it is free, provided it contains most of the open subgroups of index $p$. In the proof we establish a strong version of "almost $\omega$-freeness" of $\Pi$ and then apply the Haran-Shapiro induction.

Fifteen years after their discovery, ample fields now stand at the center of research in contemporary Galois theory and attract more and more attention also from other areas of mathematics. This survey gives an introduction to the theory of ample fields and discusses open problems.

We study the subgroup structure of the \'etale fundamental group $\Pi$ of a projective curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We obtain an analog of the diamond theorem for $\Pi$. As a consequence we show that most normal subgroups of infinite index are semi-free. In particular every proper open subgroup of a normal subgroup of infinite index is semi-free.

We study irreducible specializations, in particular when group-preserving specializations may not exist. We obtain a criterion in terms of embedding problems. We include several applications to analogs of Schinzel's hypothesis H and to the theory of Hilbertian fields.

Let K be a valued field of characteristic p>0 with non-p-divisible value group. We show that every finite embedding problem for K whose kernel is a p-group is properly solvable.

Schinzel's Hypothesis H is a general conjecture in number theory on prime values of polynomials that generalizes, e.g., the twin prime conjecture and Dirichlet's theorem on primes in arithmetic progression. This PhD deals with the notion of pseudo algebraically closed (PAC) extensions of fields. It develops a group-theoretic machinery, based on a generalization of embedding problems, to study these extensions. Perhaps the main result is that although there are many PAC extensions, the Galois closure of a proper PAC extension is separably closed. The dissertation also contains the following subjects. The group theoretical counterpart of pseudo algebraically closed extensions, the so-called projective pairs. We give a simple characterization of the totally wild ramified valuations in a Galois extension of fields of characteristic p. This criterion involves the valuations of Artin-Schreier cosets of the F_{p^r}^\times-translation of a single element. We apply the criterion to construct some interesting examples.

We introduce the notion of fully Hilbertian fields, a strictly stronger notion than that of Hilbertian fields. We show that this class of fields exhibits the same good behavior as Hilbertian fields, but for fields of uncountable cardinality, is more natural than the notion of Hilbertian fields. In particular, we show it can be used to achieve stronger Galois theoretic results. Our proofs also provide a step toward the so-called Jarden-Lubotzky twinning principle.

We generalize the notion of a projective profinite group to a projective pair of a profinite group and a closed subgroup. We establish the connection with Pseudo Algebraically Closed (PAC) extensions of PAC fields: Let M be an algebraic extension of a PAC field K. Then M/K is PAC if and only if the corresponding pair of absolute Galois groups (Gal(M),Gal(K)) is projective. Moreover any projective pair can be realized as absolute Galois groups of a PAC extension of a PAC field. Using this characterization we construct new examples of PAC extensions of relatively small fields, e.g., unbounded abelian extensions of the rational numbers.

We introduce the condition of a profinite group being semi-free, which is more general than being free and more restrictive than being quasi-free. In particular, every projective semi-free profinite group is free. We prove that the usual permanence properties of free groups carry over to semi-free groups. Using this, we conclude that if k is a separably closed field, then many field extensions of k((x,y)) have free absolute Galois groups., Comment: 24 pages

The notion of `Pseudo Algebraically Closed (PAC) extensions' is a generalization of the classical notion of PAC fields. It was originally motivated by Hilbert's tenth problem, and recently had new applications. In this work we develop a basic machinery to study PAC extensions. This machinery is based on a generalization of embedding problems to field extensions. The main goal is to prove that the Galois closure of any proper separable algebraic PAC extension is its separable closure. This vastly generalizes earlier works of Jarden-Razon, Jarden, and Jarden and the author. This also leads to a classification of all finite PAC extensions which in turn proves the `bottom conjecture' for finitely generated infinite fields.
