Bilayers (soft substrates coated with stiff films) are commonly found in nature with examples including skin tissue, vesicles, or organ membranes. They exhibit various types of instabilities when subjected to compression, depending on the contrast in material properties between the two components. We present wrinkling instabilities for 3D hyperelastic bilayer systems, including auxetics (materials with negative Poisson's ratio), under uni-axial tension. In tension, a soft bilayer can experience large lateral contraction, and we find that with an adequate contrast in the Poisson ratios, compressive stresses may develop and generate wrinkles aligned with the tensile direction. We rely on an analytic modelling of the phenomenon, and validate it with a user-defined Python script with periodic boundary conditions and constitutive relation implementation in advanced Finite Element simulations. Our findings reveal that wrinkles are observed when the Poisson ratio of the substrate is greater than that of the film. As the two Poisson ratios converge to a common value, the critical stretch of instability shoots up rapidly, and the wrinkling disappears. We also confirm these results by asymptotic analysis. This wrinkling analysis has significant potential in controlling surface patterns of auxetic skin grafts and hydrogel organ patches under mechanical loads. Moreover, the asymptotic expressions in this work can be used under finite strain for buckling-based metrology applications.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are highly promising candidates for various applications due to their unique electrical, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Furthermore, heterostructures consisting of TMDs with metals, oxides, and conductive materials have attracted significant research interest due to their exceptional electronic properties. In this study, we utilized density functional theory to investigate those electronic and transport properties, which are relevant for the application of tribo-piezoelectricity in creating novel nanogenerators: an interdisciplinary approach with promising implications. The results of the study demonstrate that the enhancement of charge transfer between layers and the orbital contribution to the Fermi level under applied strain in MoS/IrO, MoS/TiO, MoS/WTe, and MoTe/WS heterostructures is noteworthy. Additionally, non-equilibrium Green's function calculations of electron transport properties provide valuable insights into the behavior of these materials under different conditions. While MoS/IrO and MoS/TiO hetero-bilayers are unsuitable due to their tendency to exhibit large current flow with increasing voltage, others like MoS/WTe and MoTe/WS hetero bilayers show promise due to their ability to prevent voltage drop. Centrosymmetric materials with site inversion asymmetries possess hidden spin polarization, which remains challenging to be converted into spin currents because the global inversion symmetry is still conserved. This study demonstrates the spin-polarized DC circular photocurrents (CPC) in centrosymmetric transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) at normal incidence without applying electric bias. The global inversion symmetry is broken by using a spatially-varying circularly polarized light beam, which could generate spin gradient owing to the hidden spin polarization. The dependences of CPC on electrode configuration, illumination position, and beam spot size indicate an emergence of circulating electric current under spatially inhomogeneous light, which is associated with the spin-to-charge conversion through the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). The CPC is subsequently utilized to probe the spin polarization and ISHE under different excitation wavelengths and temperatures. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of using centrosymmetric materials with hidden spin polarization and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for spintronic device applications.

Cubic rocksalt structured transition-metal carbides, nitrides, and related alloys (TMC/Ns) are attractive for a wide variety of applications, notably as hard, wear-resistant material. To-date, valence electron concentration (VEC) is used as a good indicator of stability and mechanical properties of these refractory compounds. In this perspective, we argue for the need for electronic descriptors beyond VEC to explain and predict the mechanical behavior of the cubic TMC/Ns. As such, we point out that descriptors that highlight differences between constituent have been underused, along with semi-empirical models of mechanical properties. Additionally, it appears promising to partition VEC into contribution to ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds and we suggest that such partition could provide more insight into predicting mechanical properties in the future.

We report the electrochemical sodium-ion kiinetics and distribution of relaxation time (DRT) analysis of a newly designed mixed polyanionic NaFe$_{1.6}$V$_{0.4}$(PO$_{4}$)(SO$_{4}$)$_{2}$@CNT composite as a cathode. The specific capacity of 104 mAhg$^{-1}$ is observed at 0.1~C with the average working voltage of $\sim$3~V. Intriguingly, a remarkable rate capability and reversibility are demonstrated up to very high current rate of 25~C. The long cycling test up to 10~C shows high capacity retention even after 2000 cycles. The detailed analysis of galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) data reveal the diffusion coefficient of 10$^{-8}$--10$^{-11}$ cm$^{2}$s$^{-1}$. We find excellent stability in the thermal testing between 25--55$^\circ$C temperatures and 80\% capacity retention up to 100 cycles at 5~C. Further, we analyse the individual electrochemical processes in the time domain using the novel DRT technique at different temperatures. The {\it ex-situ} investigation shows the stable and reversible structure, morphology and electronic states of the long cycled cathode material. More importantly, we demonstrate relatively high specific energy of $\approx$155 Wh kg$^{-1}$ (considering the total active material loading of both the electrodes) at 0.2~C for full cell battery having excellent rate capability up to 10~C and long cyclic stability at 1~C., Comment: submitted

A generalized approach derived from Blochs equation of motion of nuclear magnetic moments is presented to model the frequency, magnetic field, spin density, and temperature dependencies in the electromagnetic permeability tensor for materials with magnetic resonances. The resulting tensor model predicts characteristic polarization signatures which can be observed, for example, in fully polarization-resolved Mueller matrix element spectra measured across magnetic resonances as a function of frequency, magnetic field, magnetic moment density, and temperature. When augmented with thermodynamic considerations and suitable Hamiltonian description of the magnetic eigenvalue spectrum, important parameters such as zero-frequency magnetization, spectral amplitude distribution, relaxation time constants, and geometrical orientation parameters of the magnetic moment density can be obtained from comparing the generalized model approach to experimental data. We demonstrate our approach by comparing model calculations with full Mueller matrix element spectra measured at oblique angle of incidence in the terahertz spectral range, across electron spin resonance quintuplet transitions observed in wurtzite-structure GaN doped with iron. Measurements were performed by ellipsometry, using a superconducting cryostat magnet at magnetic fields of 7.23 T and at temperatures of 20 K and 30 K. We detail the occurrence of linear and circular birefringence and dichroism associated with each of the zero-field split spin transitions in the S = 5/2 defect system. We derive the spectral dependence of the magnetic susceptibility function and obtain the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the spin Hamiltonian. Our model correctly predicts the complexity of the polarization signatures observed in the 15 independent elements of the normalized Mueller matrix for both positive and negative magnetic fields.

We investigate the excitonic species in WS$_{2}$ monolayers transferred onto III-V semiconductor substrates with different surface treatments. When the III-V substrates were covered with amorphous native oxides, negatively charged excitons dominate the spectral weight in low-temperature near-resonance photoluminescence (PL) measurements. However, when the native oxides of the III-V substrates were reduced, neutral excitons begin to dominate the spectral weight, indicating a reduction in the electron density in the WS$_{2}$ monolayers. The removal of the native oxides enhanced the electron transfer from the WS$_{2}$ monolayer to the III-V substrate. In addition, an additional shoulder-like PL feature appeared $\sim$50 meV below the emission of neutral excitons, which can be attributed to the emission of localized excitons. When the III-V substrate surface was passivated by sulfur after the reduction of the native oxides, neutral excitons still dominated the spectral weight. However, the low energy PL shoulder disappeared again, suggesting the effective delocalization of excitons through the substrate surface passivation. Surface engineering of the semiconductor substrates for two-dimensional (2D) materials can provide a novel approach to control the carrier density of the 2D materials, to implement deterministic carrier localization or delocalization for the 2D materials, and to facilitate the interlayer transfer of charge, spin, and valley currents. These findings open the avenue for novel device concepts and phenomena in mixed-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures.

Proximity effects allow for the adjustment of magnetic properties in a physically elegant way. If two thin ferromagnetic (FM) films are brought into contact, electronic coupling alters their magnetic exchange interaction at their interface. For a low-TC rare-earth FM coupled to a 3d transition metal FM, even room temperature magnetism is within reach. In addition, magnetic proximity coupling is particularly promising for increasing the magnetic order of metastable materials such as europium monoxide (EuO) beyond their bulk TC, since neither the stoichiometry nor the insulating properties are modified. We investigate the magnetic proximity effect at Fe/EuO and Co/EuO interfaces using hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. By exciting the FM layers with circularly polarized light, magnetic dichroism is observed in angular dependence on the photoemission geometry. In this way, the depth-dependence of the magnetic signal is determined element-specifically for the EuO and 3d FM parts of the bilayers. In connection with atomistic spin dynamics simulations, the thickness of EuO layer is found to be crucial, indicating that the observed antiferromagnetic proximity coupling is a short-ranged and genuine interface phenomenon. This fact turns the bilayer into a strong synthetic ferrimagnet. The increase in magnetic order in EuO occurs in a finite spatial range and is therefore particularly strong in the 2D limit-a counterintuitive but very useful phenomenon for spin-based device applications.

We have investigated the thermoelectric and thermal behaviour of Fe-V-W-Al based thin films prepared using radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique at different base pressures (0.1 ~ 1.0 X 10-2 Pa) and on different substrates (n, p and undoped Si). Interestingly, at lower base pressure, formation of bcc type of Heusler structure was observed in deposited samples, whereas at higher base pressure, we have noted the development of non-Heusler amorphous structure in these samples. Our findings indicates that the moderately oxidized Fe-V-W-Al amorphous thin film deposited on n-Si substrate, possesses large magnitude of absoulte S ~ 1098 microvolt per kelvin near room temperature, which is almost the double the previously reported value for thin films. Additionally, the power factor indicated enormously large values ~ 33.9 milliwatt per meter per kelvin sqaure near 320 K. The thermal conductivity of the amorphous thin film is also found to be 2.75 watt per meter per kelvin, which is quite lower compared to bulk alloys. As a result, the maximum figure of merit is estimated to be extremely high i.e. ~ 3.9 near 320 K, which is among one of the highest reported values so far. The anomalously large value of Seebeck coefficient and power factor has been ascribed to formation of amorphous structure and composite effect of thin film and substrate.

A comprehensive photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence analysis of ZnS:Mn2+ nano-phosphor with zinc blende structure is presented. The sample containing quantum dot-sized nanocrystallites were synthesized by the chemical precipitation method and shows excellent orange luminescence at ambient conditions related to the 4T1->6A1 transition. The sample shows stable and identical luminescence behavior under both UV and X-ray excitation at ambient conditions and also shows excellent self-powered mechanoluminescence properties. The pressure and temperature-induced luminescence mechanism of the phosphor is also established. The shift of the 4T1->6A1 luminescence band of Mn2+ with both pressure and temperature and the luminescence mechanism is explained via the d5 Tanabe Sugano diagram. The broad luminescence band of 4T1->6A1 transition shifts from visible to near-infrared range at a rate of -35.8 meV/GPa with the increase of pressure and it is subsequently quenched completely at a pressure of 16.41 GPa due to a reversible phase transition from zinc blende to rocksalt phase. We investigate the functionality of the $\mathrm{Cr}$-doped $\mathrm{RuO_{2}}$ as an electrode of the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), motivated by the recent experiment showing that $\mathrm{Cr}$-doping into the rutile-type $\mathrm{RuO_{2}}$ will be an effective tool to control its antiferromagnetic order and the resultant magnetotransport phenomena easily. We perform first-principles calculation of the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) effect in the MTJ based on the $\mathrm{Cr}$-doped $\mathrm{RuO_{2}}$ electrodes. We find that a finite TMR effect appears in the MTJ originating from the momentum-dependent spin splitting in the electrodes, which suggests that $\mathrm{RuO_{2}}$ with Cr-doping will work as the electrode of the MTJ. We also show that this TMR effect can be qualitatively captured using the local density of states inside the tunnel barrier., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ consists of two types of Mn-based kagome planes stacked along $c$-axis having a complex magnetic interactions. We report a spin reconstruction in YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ from ferromagnet (FM) into a combination of two incommensurate spin spirals (SSs) originating from two different type of Mn kagome planes driven by frustrated magnetic exchanges along the $c$-axis with inclusion of Hubbard U. The pitch angle and wave vector of the incommensurate SSs are $\sim$89.3$^{\circ}$ and $\sim$ (0 0 0.248) respectively which are in excellent agreement with experiment. We employed an effective model Hamiltonian constructed out of exchange interactions to capture experimentally observed non-equivalent nature of the two incommensurate SSs which also explain FM-SS crossover due to antiferromagntic spin exchange with correlation. We further report the existence of topological magnon with spin-orbit coupling in incommensurate SS phase of YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ by calculating the topological invariants and Berry curvature profile. The location of Dirac magnon in energy landscape at 73 meV matches with another experimental report. We demonstrate the accuracy of our results by highlighting experimental features in YMn$_6$Sn$_6$.

We provide effective tight-binding models of monolayer and bilayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) informed by ab initio density functional theory calculations within the local density approximation using maximally localized Wannier functions centered at the boron and nitrogen sites. An effective intra-layer tight-binding model with up to four distant hopping neighbors captures the band energies near the K-point and M-point in the Brillouin zone, including the indirect nature of the band gap for certain stackings. We then propose a two-center interlayer tight-binding model that can be used for any stacking in bilayer h-BN based on the relative distance between two atomic sites which can be used to model twisted h-BN structures.

Magnesium alloys are emerging as promising alternatives to traditional orthopedic implant materials thanks to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, and impressive mechanical characteristics. However, their rapid in-vivo degradation presents challenges, notably in upholding mechanical integrity over time. This study investigates the impact of high-temperature thermal processing on the mechanical and degradation attributes of a lean Mg-Zn-Ca-Mn alloy, ZX10. Utilizing rapid, cost-efficient characterization methods like X-ray diffraction and optical, we swiftly examine microstructural changes post-thermal treatment. Employing Pearson correlation coefficient analysis, we unveil the relationship between microstructural properties and critical targets (properties): hardness and corrosion resistance. Additionally, leveraging the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), we pinpoint the dominant microstructural factors among closely correlated variables. Our findings underscore the significant role of grain size refinement in strengthening and the predominance of the ternary Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase in corrosion behavior. This suggests that achieving an optimal blend of strength and corrosion resistance is attainable through fine grains and reduced concentration of ternary phases. This thorough investigation furnishes valuable insights into the intricate interplay of processing, structure, and properties in magnesium alloys, thereby advancing the development of superior biodegradable implant materials.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetic textures that hold great promise as nanoscale bits of information in memory and logic devices. Although room-temperature ferromagnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation have been demonstrated, their velocity has been limited to about 100 meters per second. In addition, their dynamics are perturbed by the skyrmion Hall effect, a motion transverse to the current direction caused by the skyrmion topological charge. Here, we show that skyrmions in compensated synthetic antiferromagnets can be moved by current along the current direction at velocities of up to 900 meters per second. This can be explained by the cancellation of the net topological charge leading to a vanishing skyrmion Hall effect. (111)NiO epitaxial films are grown on c-sapphire substrates at various growth temperatures ranging from room-temperature to 600C using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Two series of samples, where different laser fluences are used to ablate the target, are studied here. Films grown with higher laser fluence, are found to be embedded with Ni-clusters crystallographically aligned with the (111)NiO matrix. While the layers grown with lower laser energy density exhibit p-type conductivity specially at low growth temperatures. X-ray diffraction study shows the coexistence of biaxial compressive and tensile hydrostatic strains in these samples, which results in an expansion of the lattice primarily along the growth direction. This effective uniaxial expansion {epsilon}_perpendicular increases with the reduction of the growth temperature. Band gap of these samples is found to decrease linearly with {epsilon}_perpendicular. This result is validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimental findings and the theoretical study further indicate that V_Ni + O_I and V_O + Ni_I complexes exist as the dominant native defects in samples grown with Ni-deficient (low laser fluence) and Ni-rich (high laser fluence) conditions, respectively. La$_{0.58}$Ca$_{0.4}$Co$_{0.2}$Fe$_{0.8}$O$_{3-\delta}$ (L58CCF) was synthesized and evaluated as a cathode electrode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) based on the Y$_2$O$_3$-stabilized ZrO$_2$ (YSZ) electrolyte. The effect of sintering temperature on the L58CCF performance was investigated. The best Area specific resistances (ASRs) for the L58CCF sintered at 950 $^{\circ}$C were 1.218, 0.447, 0.228, 0.156, 0.099 $\Omega.cm^{2}$ at 600, 650, 700, 750, 800 $^{\circ}$C, respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

Layered halide perovskites have emerged as potential alternatives to three-dimensional halide perovskites due to their improved stability and larger material phase space, allowing fine-tuning of structural, electronic, and optical properties. However, their charge carrier mobilities are significantly smaller than that of three-dimensional halide perovskites, which has a considerable impact on their application in optoelectronic devices. Here, we employ state-of-the-art ab initio approaches to unveil the electron-phonon mechanisms responsible for the diminished transport properties of layered halide perovskites. Starting from a prototypical ABX$_{3}$ halide perovskite, we model the case of $n=1$ and $n=2$ layered structures and compare their electronic and transport properties to the three-dimensional reference. The electronic and phononic properties are investigated within density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), while transport properties are obtained via the ab initio Boltzmann transport equation. The vibrational modes contributing to charge carrier scattering are investigated and associated with polar-phonon scattering mechanisms arising from the long-range Fr\"ohlich coupling and deformation potential scattering processes. Our investigation reveals that the lower mobilities in layered systems primarily originates from the increased electronic density of states at the vicinity of the band edges, while the electron-phonon coupling strength remains similar. Such increase is caused by the dimensionality reduction and the break in octahedra connectivity along the stacking direction. Our findings provide a fundamental understanding of the electron-phonon coupling mechanisms in layered perovskites and highlight the intrinsic limitations of the charge carrier transport in these materials.

Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites offer enhanced stability for perovskite-based applications. Their crystal structure's soft and ionic nature gives rise to strong interactions between charge carriers and ionic rearrangements. Here, we investigate the interaction of photo-generated electrons and ionic polarizations in single-crystal 2D perovskite butylammonium lead iodide, varying the inorganic lammelae thickness in the 2D single crystals. We determined the directionality of the transition dipole moments of the relevant phonon modes (in the 0.3-3 THz range) by angle-and-polarization dependent THz transmission measurements. We find a clear anisotropy of the in-plane photoconductivity, with a 10% reduction along the axis parallel with the transition dipole moment of the most strongly coupled phonon. Noncollinear antiferromagnets (AFMs) in the family of Mn$_3X$ ($X$=Ir, Sn, Ge, Pt, etc.) have recently attracted attention in the emerging field of antiferromagnetic spintronics because of their various interesting transport, magnetic, and optical properties. Due to the noncollinear magnetic order, the localized electron spins on different magnetic sublattices are not conserved even when spin-orbit coupling is neglected, making it difficult to understand the transport of spin angular momentum. Here we study the conserved Noether current associated with spin-rotation symmetry of the local spins in noncollinear AFMs. We found that a Hall component of the d.c. spin current can be created by a longitudinal driving force associated with a propagating spin wave, and is proportional to a response coefficient that we denote as the Hall (inverse) mass. Such a Hall spin current can be generated by spin pumping in a ferromagnet (FM)-noncollinear AFM bilayer structure as we demonstrated numerically. Finally we showed that the Hall mass is an isotropic quantity, similar to the isotropic spin Hall conductivity, and should generally exist in noncollinear AFMs and their polycrystals. Our results shed light on the potential of noncollinear AFMs in manipulating the polarization and flow of spin currents in general spintronic devices.

Scientific advancement is universally based on the dynamic interplay between theoretical insights, modelling, and experimental discoveries. However, this feedback loop is often slow, including delayed community interactions and the gradual integration of experimental data into theoretical frameworks. This challenge is particularly exacerbated in domains dealing with high-dimensional object spaces, such as molecules and complex microstructures. Hence, the integration of theory within automated and autonomous experimental setups, or theory in the loop automated experiment, is emerging as a crucial objective for accelerating scientific research. The critical aspect is not only to use theory but also on-the-fly theory updates during the experiment. Here, we introduce a method for integrating theory into the loop through Bayesian co-navigation of theoretical model space and experimentation. Our approach leverages the concurrent development of surrogate models for both simulation and experimental domains at the rates determined by latencies and costs of experiments and computation, alongside the adjustment of control parameters within theoretical models to minimize epistemic uncertainty over the experimental object spaces. This methodology facilitates the creation of digital twins of material structures, encompassing both the surrogate model of behavior that includes the correlative part and the theoretical model itself. While demonstrated here within the context of functional responses in ferroelectric materials, our approach holds promise for broader applications, the exploration of optical properties in nanoclusters, microstructure-dependent properties in complex materials, and properties of molecular systems. The top-down synthesis of inherently ferroelectric semiconductors and their integration with traditional material platforms have the potential to enable new low power logic devices, and to harness the bulk photoelectric effect for more efficient photovoltaic cells. InSe is a layered van der Waals compound exhibiting multiple polytypes, with semiconducting gamma-InSe revealing a non-centrosymmetric space group and showing a high carrier mobility at room temperature. Here we report the growth of InSe films on close to lattice matched semi-insulating GaAs(111)B substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Excellent nucleation behavior resulted in the growth of smooth, single phase InSe films. The dominant polytype determined from X-ray diffraction was the targeted gamma-InSe, however Raman spectroscopy revealed spatial variations in the overall low-intensity non-centrosymmetric vibration modes. Transmission electron microscopy uncovered the presence of the three bulk polytypes beta, gamma, and epsilon-InSe coexisting in the films arranging in nanosized domains. The different polytypes can be interpreted as sequences of stacking faults and rotational twin boundaries of gamma-InSe made from individual non-centrosymmetric Se-In-In-Se layers with P-6m2 symmetry. A second, centrosymmetric Se-In-In-Se layer polymorph was identified with P-3m symmetry, which is typically not present in InSe bulk phases. First principles calculations revealed small formation energy differences between the InSe polymorphs and polytypes, yet sizeable differences in their electronic properties. Nanoscale domain sizes of varying polytypes thus resulted in sizeable electronic disorder in the grown films that dominated the electronic transport properties. Our results indicate that bottom-up thin film synthesis is a viable synthesis route towards stabilization of InSe polytypes not present in the bulk.

Understanding the phonon behavior in semiconductors from a topological physics perspective provides more opportunities to uncover extraordinary physics related to phonon transport and electron-phonon interactions. While various kinds of topological phonons have been reported in different crystalline solids, their microscopic origin has not been quantitatively uncovered. In this work, four typical analytical interatomic force constant (IFC) models are employed for wurtzite GaN and AlN to help establish the relationships between phonon topology and real-space IFCs. In particular, various nearest neighbor IFCs, i.e., different levels of nonlocality, and IFC strength controlled by characteristic coefficients, can be achieved in these models. The results demonstrate that changes in the strength of both the IFCs and nonlocal interactions can induce phonon phase transitions in GaN and AlN, leading to the disappearance of existing Weyl phonons and the appearance of new Weyl phonons. These new Weyl phonons are the result of a band reversal and have a Chern number of 1. Most of them are located in the kz=0 plane in pairs, while some of them are inside or at the boundary of the irreducible Brillouin zone. Among the various Weyl points observed, certain ones remain identical in both materials, while others exhibit variability depending on the particular case. Compared to the strength of the IFC, nonlocal interactions show much more significant effects in inducing the topological phonon phase transition, especially in cases modeled by the IFC model and SW potential. We demonstrate the integration of a thin BaTiO$_3$ (BTO) membrane with monolayer MoSe$_2$ in a dual gate device that enables in-situ manipulation of the BTO ferroelectric polarization with a voltage pulse. While two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer remarkable adaptability, their hybrid integration with other families of functional materials beyond the realm of 2D materials has been challenging. Released functional oxide membranes offer a solution for 2D/3D integration via stacking. 2D TMD excitons can serve as a local probe of the ferroelectric polarization in BTO at a heterogeneous interface. Using photoluminescence (PL) of MoSe$_2$ excitons to optically readout the doping level, we find that the relative population of charge carriers in MoSe$_2$ depends sensitively on the ferroelectric polarization. We have investigated interlayer interactions in the bilayer PtTe$_{2}$ system, which influence the electronic energy bands near the Fermi levels. Our diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations for the high-symmetry bilayer stackings (AA, AB, AC) manifest distinct interlayer binding characteristics among the stacking modes by revealing significantly different interlayer separations depending on the stackings, which is critical to understanding the interlayer coupling of the twisted bilayers consisting of various local stacking arrangements. Furthermore, a comparison between the interlayer separations obtained from DMC and density functional theory (DFT) shows that meta-GGA-based vdW-DFT results agree with DMC for different layer stackings, including twisted bilayers, but only the ground-state AA stacking matches well with GGA-based DFT predictions. This underscores the importance of accurate exchange-correlation potentials even for capturing the stacking-dependent interlayer binding properties. We further show that the variability in DFT-predicted interlayer separations is responsible for the large discrepancy of band structures in the 21.79$^{\circ}$-twisted bilayer PtTe$_{2}$, affecting its classification as metallic or semiconducting. These results demonstrate the importance of obtaining a correct description of stacking-dependent interlayer coupling in modeling delicate bilayer systems at finite twists.

The Kondo lattice physics, describing the hybridization of localized spin matrix with dispersive conduction electrons, breeds numerous discoveries in the realm of strongly correlated quantum matter. Generally observed in lanthanide and actinide compounds, increasing attention has been directed towards alternative pathways for achieving flat band structures, such as Morie superlattices and Kagome metals. However, fine control of Kondo interaction outside of heterostructures remains elusive. Here we report the discovery of a van der Waals (vdW) kagome antiferromagnet CsCr6Sb6. Angle-resolved photoemission spectra and theoretical analysis show clear flat bands, consisting of half-filled 3dxz and 3dyz orbitals of Cr, situated 50 meV below the Fermi level. Importantly, we observe the emergence of anomalous Hall effect with remarkable tunability by simple reduction the sample thickness. The effective control of kondo interaction in CsCr6Sb6 render it an ideal platform for exploring unpresented phenomena using the vast toolkit of vdW structures.

An accurate description of information is relevant for a range of problems in atomistic modeling, such as sampling methods, detecting rare events, analyzing datasets, or performing uncertainty quantification (UQ) in machine learning (ML)-driven simulations. Although individual methods have been proposed for each of these tasks, they lack a common theoretical background integrating their solutions. Here, we introduce an information theoretical framework that unifies predictions of phase transformations, kinetic events, dataset optimality, and model-free UQ from atomistic simulations, thus bridging materials modeling, ML, and statistical mechanics. We first demonstrate that, for a proposed representation, the information entropy of a distribution of atom-centered environments is a surrogate value for thermodynamic entropy. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we show that information entropy differences from trajectories can be used to build phase diagrams, identify rare events, and recover classical theories of nucleation. Building on these results, we use this general concept of entropy to quantify information in datasets for ML interatomic potentials (IPs), informing compression, explaining trends in testing errors, and evaluating the efficiency of active learning strategies. Finally, we propose a model-free UQ method for MLIPs using information entropy, showing it reliably detects extrapolation regimes, scales to millions of atoms, and goes beyond model errors. This method is made available as the package QUESTS: Quick Uncertainty and Entropy via STructural Similarity, providing a new unifying theory for data-driven atomistic modeling and combining efforts in ML, first-principles thermodynamics, and simulations.

Axion insulators possess a quantized axion field $\theta=\pi$ protected by combined lattice and time-reversal symmetry, holding great potential for device applications in layertronics and quantum computing. Here, we propose a high-spin axion insulator (HSAI) defined in large spin-$s$ representation, which maintains the same inherent symmetry but possesses a notable axion field $\theta=(s+1/2)^2\pi$. Such distinct axion field is confirmed independently by the direct calculation of the axion term using hybrid Wannier functions, layer-resolved Chern numbers, as well as the topological magneto-electric effect. We show that the guaranteed gapless quasi-particle excitation is absent at the boundary of the HSAI despite its integer surface Chern number, hinting an unusual quantum anomaly violating the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. Furthermore, we ascertain that the axion field $\theta$ can be precisely tuned through an external magnetic field, enabling the manipulation of bonded transport properties. The HSAI proposed here can be experimentally verified in ultra-cold atoms by the quantized non-reciprocal conductance or topological magnetoelectric response. Hot-carrier solar cells use the photon excess energy, that is, the energy exceeding the absorber bandgap, to do additional work. These devices have the potential to beat the upper limit for the photovoltaic power conversion efficiency set by near-equilibrium thermodynamics. However, since their conceptual inception in 1982, making this concept work under practical conditions has proven a tremendous hurdle, mostly due to the fast thermalization of photo-generated charges in typical semiconductor materials like silicon. Here, we use noise spectroscopy in combination with numerical modelling to show that common bulk heterojunction organic solar cells actually work as hot-carrier devices. Due to static energetic disorder, thermalization of photo-generated electrons and holes in the global density of states is slow compared to the charge carrier lifetime, leading to thermal populations of localized charge carriers that have an electronic temperature exceeding the lattice temperature. Since charge extraction takes place in a high-lying, narrow energy window around the transport energy, the latter takes the role of an energy filter. For common disorder values, this leads to substantial enhancements in open circuit voltage. We expect these results to inspire new strategies to more efficiently convert solar energy into electricity.

FM1/NM/FM2 trilayers have garnered considerable attention because of their potential in spintronic applications. A thorough investigation of the spin transport properties of these trilayers is therefore important. Asymmetric trilayers, particularly those including Platinum (Pt) as a spacer are less explored. Pt mediates exchange coupling between the two FM layers and thus offers a unique platform to investigate the spin-transport properties under indirect exchange coupling conditions through the spin-pumping mechanism. Our analytical focus on the acoustic mode of the ferromagnetic resonance spectrum, facilitated by the distinct magnetizations of the Ni80Fe20 and Co layers, allows for the isolation of individual layer resonances. The derived spin-pumping induced damping of the Ni80Fe20 and Co layers reveals a direct dependence on the Pt spacer thickness. Furthermore, fitting of the weighted average of the damping parameters to the spin-pumping induced damping of acoustic mode reveals that the observed FMR spectra is indeed a result of the in-phase precession of the magnetizations in two FM layers. The extracted effective spin-mixing conductance varies with the FM/NM interface, specifically 1.72x10^19 m^(-2) at the Ni80Fe20/Pt and 4.07x10^19 m^(-2) at the Co/Pt interface, indicating a strong correlation with interfacial characteristics. Additionally, we deduce the spin diffusion length in Pt to be between 1.02 and 1.55 nm and calculate the interfacial spin transparency and spin current densities, highlighting significant disparities between the Ni80Fe20/Pt and Co/Pt interfaces. This detailed analysis enhances our understanding of spin transport in Ni80Fe20/Pt/Co trilayers. Realization of noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl metals is expected to exhibit anomalous transport properties stemming from the interplay of unusual bulk electronic topology and magnetism. Here, we present spin-valve-like magnetoresistance at room temperature in ferrimagneticWeyl metal Mn$_2$PdSn that crystallizes in the inverse Heusler structure. Anomalous magnetoresistance display dominant asymmetric component attributed to domain wall electron scattering, indicative of spin-valve-like behavior. Ab initio calculations confirm the topologically non-trivial nature of the band structure, with three pairs of Weyl nodes proximate to the Fermi level, providing deeper insights into the observed intrinsic Berry curvature mediated substantial anomalous Hall conductivity. Our results underscore the inverse Heusler compounds as promising platform to realize magnetic Weyl metals/semimetals and leverage emergent transport properties for electronic functionalities.

The next generation of soft electronics will expand to the third dimension. This will require the integration of mechanically-compliant three-dimensional functional structures with stretchable materials. This study demonstrates omnidirectional direct ink writing (DIW) of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) aerogels with tunable electrical and mechanical performance, which can be integrated with soft substrates. Several PEDOT:PSS hydrogels were formulated for DIW and freeze-dried directly on stretchable substrates to form integrated aerogels displaying high shape fidelity and minimal shrinkage. The effect of additives and processing in the PEDOT:PSS hydro and aerogels morphology, and the link with their electromechanical properties was elucidated. This technology demonstrated 3D-structured stretchable interconnects and planar thermoelectric generators (TEGs) for skin electronics, as well as vertically-printed high aspect ratio thermoelectric pillars with a high ZT value of 3.2 10^-3 and ultra-low thermal conductivity of 0.065 W/(m K). Despite their comparatively low ZT, the aerogel pillars outpowered their dense counterparts in realistic energy harvesting scenarios where contact resistances cannot be ignored, and produced up to 26 nW/cm2 (corresponding to a gravimetric power density of 0.76 mW/kg) for a difference of temperature of 15 K. This work suggests promising advancements in soft and energy-efficiency electronic systems relevant to soft robotics and wearable.

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanoscrolls (NS) exhibit significant photoluminescence (PL) signals despite their multilayer structure, which cannot be explained by the strained multilayer description of NS. Here, we investigate the interlayer interactions in NS to address this discrepancy. The reduction of interlayer interactions in NS is attributed to two factors: (1) the symmetry-broken mixed stacking order between neighbouring layers due to misalignment, and (2) the high inhomogeneity in the strain landscape resulting from the unique Archimedean spiral-like geometry with positive eccentricity. These were confirmed through transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. To probe the effect of reduction of interlayer interactions in multilayered MoS$_2$ nanoscrolls, low-temperature PL spectroscopy was employed investigating the behaviour of K-point excitons. The effects of reduced interlayer interactions on exciton-phonon coupling (EXPC), exciton energy, and exciton oscillator strength are discussed, providing insights into the unique properties of TMD nanoscrolls., Comment: S.C. and T.C. have contributed equally to this work

We describe a method for modeling the geometry of porous materials. The approach enables the independent selection of crucial parameters, including porosity, pore size distribution, pore shape, and connectivity. Consequently, it can effectively model a wide range of porous systems. Due to the diverse and systematic variation possibilities, the method is suitable for developing and optimizing porous structures. The geometries can be exported as triangular meshes, facilitating their immediate use in numerical simulation and further digital processing. Attosecond dynamics of electron reflection from a thin film is studied based on a one-dimensional jellium model. Following the Eisenbud-Wigner-Smith concept, the reflection time delay $\Delta\tau_{\rm R}$ is calculated as the energy derivative of the phase of the complex reflection amplitude $r$. For a purely elastic scattering by a jellium slab of a finite thickness $d$ the transmission probability $T$ oscillates with the momentum $K$ in the solid with a period $\pi/d$, and $\Delta\tau_{\rm R}$ closely follows these oscillations. The reflection delay averaged over an energy interval grows with $d$, but in the limit of $d\to\infty$ the amplitude $r$ becomes real, so $\Delta\tau_{\rm R}$ vanishes. This picture changes substantially with the inclusion of an absorbing potential $-iV_{\rm i}$: As expected, for a sufficiently thick slab the reflection amplitude now tends to its asymptotic value for a semi-infinite crystal. Interestingly, for $V_{\rm i} \ne 0$, around the $T(E)$ maxima, the $\Delta\tau_{\rm R}(E)$ curve strongly deviates from $T(E)$, showing a narrow dip just at the $\Delta\tau_{\rm R}(E)$ maximum for $V_{\rm i}=0$. The Transfer Matrix Method (TMM) has become a prominent tool for the optical simulation of thin$-$film solar cells, particularly among researchers specializing in organic semiconductors and perovskite materials. As the commercial viability of these solar cells continues to advance, driven by rapid developments in materials and production processes, the importance of optical simulation has grown significantly. By leveraging optical simulation, researchers can gain profound insights into photovoltaic phenomena, empowering the implementation of device optimization strategies to achieve enhanced performance. However, existing TMM$-$based packages exhibit limitations, such as requiring programming expertise, licensing fees, or lack of support for bilayer device simulation. In response to these gaps and challenges, we present the TMM Simulator (TMM$-$Sim), an intuitive and user$-$friendly tool to calculate essential photovoltaic parameters, including the optical electric field profile, exciton generation profile, fraction of light absorbed per layer, photocurrent, external quantum efficiency, internal quantum efficiency, and parasitic losses. An additional advantage of TMM$-$Sim lies in its capacity to generate outcomes suitable as input parameters for electro$-$optical device simulations. In this work, we offer a comprehensive guide, outlining a step$-$by$-$step process to use TMM$-$Sim, and provide a thorough analysis of the results. Optical manipulation of magnetism holds promise for future ultrafast spintronics, especially with lanthanides and their huge, localized 4f magnetic moments. These moments interact indirectly via the conduction electrons (RKKY exchange), influenced by interatomic orbital overlap, and the conduction electron susceptibility. Here, we study this influence in a series of 4f antiferromagnets, GdT2Si2 (T=Co, Rh, Ir), using ultrafast resonant X-ray diffraction. We observe a twofold increase in ultrafast angular momentum transfer between the materials, originating from modifications in the conduction electron susceptibility, as confirmed by first-principles calculations.

Antiferromagnetic FeSn is considered to be a close realization of the ideal two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice, hosting Dirac cones, van Hove singularities, and flat bands, as it comprises Fe$_3$Sn kagome layers well separated by Sn buffer layers. We observe a pronounced optical anisotropy, with the low-energy optical conductivity being surprisingly higher perpendicular to the kagome planes than along the layers. This finding contradicts the prevalent picture of dominantly 2D electronic structure for FeSn. Our material-specific theory reproduces the measured conductivity spectra remarkarbly well. A site-specific decomposition of the optical response to individual excitation channels shows that the optical conductivity for polarizations both parallel and perpendicular to the kagome plane is dominated by interlayer transitions between kagome layers and adjacent Sn-based layers. Moreover, the matrix elements corresponding to these transitions are highly anisotropic, leading to larger out-of-plane conductivity. We show that orbital currents can describe the transport of orbital magnetic moments of Bloch states in models where the formalism based on valley current is not applicable. As a case study, we consider Kekul\'e distorted graphene. We begin by analyzing the band structure in detail and obtain the orbital magnetic moment operator for this model within the framework of the modern theory of magnetism. Despite the simultaneous presence of time-reversal and spatial-inversion symmetries, such operator may be defined, although its expectation value at a given energy is zero. Nevertheless, its presence can be exposed by the application of an external magnetic field. We then proceed to study the transport of these quantities. In the Kekul\'e-$O$ distorted graphene model, the strong coupling between different valleys prevents the definition of a bulk valley current. However, the formalism of the orbital Hall effect together with the non-Abelian description of the magnetic moment operator can be directly applied to describe its transport in these types of models. We show that the Kekul\'e-$O$ distorted graphene model exhibits an orbital Hall insulating plateau whose height is inversely proportional to the energy band gap produced by intervalley coupling. A novel, single step and environment friendly solid state approach for reduction of graphene oxide (GO) monolayers has been demonstrated, in which, arachidic acid-GO-arachidic acid (AA-GO-AA) sandwich structure obtained by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was heat treated at moderate temperatures to obtain RGO sheets. Heat treatment of AA-GO-AA sandwich structure at 200 C results in substantial reduction of GO, with concurrent removal of AA molecules. Such developed RGO sheets possess sp2-C content of 69%, O/C ratio of 0.17 and significantly reduced I(D) and I(G) ratio of ~1.1. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) studies on RGO sheets evidenced significant increase in density of states in immediate vicinity of Fermi level and decrease in work function after reduction. Bottom gated field effect transistors fabricated with isolated RGO sheets displayed charge neutrality point at a positive gate voltage, indicating p-type nature, consistent with UPS and electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) measurement results.The RGO sheets obtained by heat treatment of AA-GO-AA sandwich structure exhibited conductivity in the range of 2-7Scm-1 and field effect mobility of 0.03-2cm2V-1s-1, which are consistent with values reported for RGO sheets obtained by various chemical or thermal reduction procedures.The extent of GO reduction is determined primarily by proximity of AA molecules and found to be unaltered with either escalation of heat treatment temperature or increase of AA content in sandwich structure. First-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations were applied for the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition in the perovskite-type cadmium titanate, CdTiO3. Since the phase transition is reported to occur at the low temperature around 80 K, the quantum thermal bath (QTB) method was utilized in this study, which incorporates the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs). The structural evolutions in the QTB-FPMD simulations are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results, by contrast in the conventional FPMD simulations using the classical thermal bath (CTB-FPMD). According to our phonon calculations, volume expansion is the key in the stabilization of the ferroelectric phase at low temperatures, which was well reproduced in the QTB-FPMD with the NQEs. Thus, the NQEs are of importance in phase transitions at low temperatures, particularly below the room temperature, and the QTB is useful in that it incorporates the NQEs in MD simulations with low computational costs comparable to the conventional CTB.

Understanding complex quantum dynamics in realistic materials requires insight into the underlying correlations dominating the interactions between the participating particles. Due to the wealth of information involved in these processes, applying artificial intelligence methods is compelling. Yet, unsupervised data-driven approaches typically focus on maximal variations of the individual components, rather than considering the correlations between them. Here we present an approach that recognizes correlation patterns to explore convoluted dynamical processes. Our scheme is using singular value decomposition (SVD) to extract dynamical features, unveiling the internal temporal-spatial interrelations that generate the dynamical mechanisms. We apply our approach to study light-induced wavepacket propagation in organic crystals, of interest for applications in material based quantum computing and quantum information science. We show how transformation from the input momentum and time coordinates onto a new correlation-induced coordinate space allows direct recognition of the relaxation and dephasing components dominating the dynamics and demonstrate their dependence on the initial pulse shape. Entanglement of the dynamical features is suggested as a pathway to reproduce the information required for further explainability of these mechanisms. Our method offers a route for elucidating complex dynamical processes using unsupervised AI-based analysis in multi-component systems.

In scanning tunneling microscopy of molecules, an insulating buffer layer is often introduced to reduce interaction between the molecules and the substrate. Focusing on tunneling through the molecule's electronic transport gap, we demonstrate that the buffer itself strongly influences the wave function of the tunneling electron at the molecule. This is exemplified for an adsorbed platinum phthalocyanine molecule by varying the composition and thickness of the buffer. We find that, in particular, the buffer's lattice parameter is crucial. By expanding the wave function of the tunneling electron in molecular orbitals (MOs), we illustrate how one can strongly vary the relative weights of different MOs, such as the highest occupied MO versus some low-lying MOs with few nodal surfaces. The set of MOs with significant weight are important for processes used to manipulate the state of the molecule by a tunneling electron, such as molecular luminescence. Moir\'e superlattices have become an emergent solid-state platform for simulating quantum lattice models. However, in single moir\'e device, Hamiltonians parameters like lattice constant, hopping and interaction terms can hardly be manipulated, limiting the controllability and accessibility of moire quantum simulator. Here, by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that high-order moir\'e patterns in graphene-monolayered xenon/krypton heterostructures can simulate honeycomb model in mesoscale, with in-situ tunable Hamiltonians parameters. The length scale of simulated lattice constant can be tuned by annealing processes, which in-situ adjusts intervalley interaction and hopping parameters in the simulated honeycomb lattice. The sign of the lattice constant can be switched by choosing xenon or krypton monolayer deposited on graphene, which controls sublattice degree of freedom and valley arrangment of Dirac fermions. Twist between neighboring layers and variation of interlayer distance are two extra ways to control the physical properties of stacked two-dimensional van der Waals materials without alteration of chemical compositions or application of external fields, compared to their monolayer counterparts. In this work, we explored the dependence of the magnetic states of the untwisted and twisted bilayer 1T-VX$_2$ (X = S, Se) on the interlayer distance by density functional theory calculations. We find that, while a magnetic phase transition occurs from interlayer ferromagnetism to interlayer antiferromagnetism either as a function of decreasing interlayer distance for the untwisted bilayer 1T-VX$_2$ or after twist, richer magnetic phase transitions consecutively take place for the twisted bilayer 1T-VX$_2$ as interlayer distance is gradually reduced. Besides, the critical pressures for the phase transition are greatly reduced in twisted bilayer 1T-VX$_2$ compared with the untwisted case. We derived the Heisenberg model with intralayer and interlayer exchange couplings to comprehend the emergence of various magnetic states. The Dyakonov-Perel (DP) mechanism of spin relaxation has long been considered irrelevant in centrosymmetric systems since it was developed originally for non-centrosymmetric ones. We investigate whether this conventional understanding extends to the realm of orbital relaxation, which has recently attracted significant attention. Surprisingly, we find that orbital relaxation in centrosymmetric systems exhibits the DP-like behavior in the weak scattering regime. Moreover, the DP-like orbital relaxation can make the spin relaxation in centrosymmetric systems DP-like through the spin-orbit coupling. Recently, man-made dielectric materials composed of finite-sized dielectric constituents have emerged as a promising platform for quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBICs). These states allow for an extraordinary confinement of light within regions smaller than the wavelength scale. Known for their exceptional quality factors, they have become crucial assets across a diverse array of applications. Given the circumstances, there is a compelling drive to find meta-designs that can possess multiple QBICs. Here, we demonstrate the existence of two different types of QBICs in silicon-based metasurfaces: accidental QBIC and symmetry-protected QBIC. The accidental QBIC evinces notable resilience to variations in geometrical parameters and symmetry, underscoring its capacity to adeptly navigate manufacturing tolerances while consistently upholding a distinguished quality factor of $10^5$. Conversely, the symmetry-protected QBIC inherently correlates with the disruption of unit cell symmetry. As a result, a phase delay yields an efficient channel for substantial energy transference to the continuum, endowing this variant with an exceedingly high quality factor, approaching $10^8$. Moreover, the manifestation of these QBICs stems from the intricate interplay among out-of-plane electric and magnetic dipoles, alongside in-plane quadrupoles exhibiting odd parities.

HoNiSi$_{3}$ is an intermetallic compound characterized by two successive antiferromagnetic transitions at $T_{N1} = 6.3$ K and $T_{N2} = 10.4$ K. We analyze both the general symmetry-related and more microscopic considerations that govern the Josephson tunneling across a finite planar junction between a known $s$-wave superconductor and a candidate unconventional superconductor (e.g., $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave). Due to the finite size of the probe, the Josephson current possesses an edge contribution, which is shown to be the dominant contribution under certain conditions. Thus, the dependence of the edge contribution on the geometry of the junction can serve as a direct probe of the symmetry of the order parameter in the unconventional superconductor.

External coherent fields can drive quantum materials into non-equilibrium states, revealing exotic properties that are unattainable under equilibrium conditions -- an approach known as ``Floquet engineering.'' While optical lasers have commonly been used as the driving fields, recent advancements have introduced nontraditional sources, such as coherent phonon drives. Building on this progress, we demonstrate that driving a metallic quantum nanowire with a coherent wave of terahertz phonons can induce an electronic steady state characterized by a persistent quantized current along the wire. The quantization of the current is achieved due to the coupling of electrons to the nanowire's vibrational modes, providing the low-temperature heat bath and energy relaxation mechanisms.
