E-learning is becoming a global phenomenon. Learning Arabic (or Arabic dialects), or learning one or several variants of Berber can be understood from a very local perspective (in the Maghreb for instance) or in the wider framework of the diaspora or even more broadly in a global world context (in case a Japanese or a Russian learns Arabic and Berber). Resources for distance learning must then be created and potentially used in any international cultural and linguistic context. This implies that the resources created for such perspective should cope with the general standards framework of the ISO / IEC JTC1SC36, and even beyond the scope of this standardization instance., Comment: in French language. We are convinced of the usefulness of sketches and diagrams during mathematical work but the observation is made in our practices that they are not spontaneously used by students. In order to study the understanding and use of sketches by mathematics students, we designed and then proposed a test at different university levels. The test consists of five exercises. The first concerns different representation registers of a set of numbers, the second on a graphic proof of an implicative algebraic proposition and the last three on the graphic approch to the notions of injectivity, surjectivity, bijectivity in the context of the analysis. The sketches, proposed or requested in each exercise, are intended to be aids to changes of register and reasoning. We present what motivated the choices and developments of the exercises then we analyze the results of these tests. In each case, we see difficulties in understanding and the sketches proposed, which leads to think that the sketch must be the subject of specific work at the university level., Comment: in French language

Let $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ be an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathbb{Q}^{tr}$ be the subfield of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ obtained by taking the union of all totally real number fields. For any prime $p\geq 3$, let $F_p/\mathbb{Q}$ be the Fermat curve of equation $x^p+y^p+z^p=0$. In 1996, Pop has shown that the field $\mathbb{Q}^{tr}$ is large. In particular, the set $F_p(\mathbb{Q}^{tr})$ of the points of $F_p$ rational over $\mathbb{Q}^{tr}$ is infinite. How to explicit non-trivial points $(xyz\neq 0$) in $F_p(\mathbb{Q}^{tr})$ ? If one has $p\geq 5$, it seems that the only points already known in $F_p(\mathbb{Q}^{tr})$ are those of $F_p(\mathbb{Q})$ and they are trivial. In this paper, we investigate this question in case $p=5$. There are no totally real fields whose degree over $\mathbb{Q}$ is at most $5$ over which $F_5$ has non-trivial points. We propose here to explicit infinitely many points of $F_5$ rational over totally real fields of degree $6$ over $\mathbb{Q}$., Comment: in French language

In Search of the Wave is a computer-generated film made in 2013, highlighting the computation of images through computer simulation, and through text and voice. Originating from a screening of the film at the Gustave Eiffel University, the article presents a reflection on research-creation in and from algorithmic images. Fundamentally, what is it in this research-creation -- especially in research on algorithmic imagery -- that can be set in motion? Without fully distinguishing between what would be research on one hand and creation on the other, we focus on characterizing forms, aesthetics, or theories that contribute to possible shifts. The inventory of these possibilities is precisely the challenge of the text: from mathematics to image and visualization, from the birth of generative aesthetics to the coding related to pioneering works (recoding), or from indexing new aesthetics to new forms of critical production., Comment: in French language

The article aims at identifying what, from a structural point of view, AI based automatic translators cannot fully capture. It focuses on the machine's mistakes, in order to try to explain its causes. The biblical story of Ca\"in and Abel has been chosen because of its rich interpretive and critical tradition, but also because of its semantic difficulty. The investigation begins with the observation, for the translation of this text, of the language pairs and interfaces offered by the best known machine translation services (Google Translate, DeepL). A typology of the most frequent translation errors is then established. Finally, contemporary translations are compared, in order to underline the unique contribution of each. In conclusion, the article suggests a revision of translation theory and, corArtificial Intelligence, Translation, Limitations, Interpretation, Comparison, Unicityelatively, a reformulation of its technology concerning cultural texts., Comment: in French language

This paper presents the proof-of-concept of the first automatic voice assistant ever built in Wolof language, the main vehicular language spoken in Senegal. This voicebot is the result of a collaborative research project between Orange Innovation in France, Orange Senegal (aka Sonatel) and ADNCorp, a small IT company based in Dakar, Senegal. The purpose of the voicebot is to provide information to Orange customers about the Sargal loyalty program of Orange Senegal by using the most natural mean to communicate: speech. The voicebot receives in input the customer's oral request that is then processed by a SLU system to reply to the customer's request using audio recordings. The first results of this proof-of-concept are encouraging as we achieved 22\% of WER for the ASR task and 78\% of F1-score on the NLU task., Comment: in French language

Given the increasing pressures exerted by climate change on small-scale agriculture, the importance of participatory modelling methodologies that can consider both the human and environmental components of these systems has become more and more evident. The current study presents a socioeconomic system dynamics model of the food and environmental systems of the predominantly Indigenous region of Tz'ol{\"o}j Ya', Guatemala. The model was built in a participatory manner with stakeholders from the region and was then coupled to an external crop growth model before being applied to the analysis of the impact of future climate change and its potential interactions with various stakeholder-proposed policies. The analysis identified several feedback loops between environmental and human components of the system that can lead to counterintuitive responses to the proposed policies. At the same time, the use of an external crop growth model allowed for a more realistic, yet still easily implementable, representation of the impacts of climate change on crop production. This analysis is the first to use a socioeconomic system dynamics model coupled with an external crop growth model to analyse food security in the context of a local socio-environmental food system., Comment: in French language

The digitisation campaigns carried out by libraries and archives in recent years have facilitated access to documents in their collections. However, exploring and exploiting these documents remain difficult tasks due to the sheer quantity of documents available for consultation. In this article, we show how the semantic annotation of the textual content of study corpora of archival documents allow to facilitate their exploitation and valorisation. First, we present a methodological framework for the construction of new interfaces based on textual semantics, then address the current technological obstacles and their potential solutions. We conclude by presenting a practical case of the application of this framework., Comment: in French language. For decades, hospital services have been faced with the challenge of ensuring quality care for patients despite the pressures on staff due to workload overload. Nursing staff are particularly affected by this reality, with a patient/nursing staff ratio so imbalanced that it directly affects the quality of care and the well-being of nurses. This article examines in detail the workload of nursing staff, shedding light on the various factors influencing this workload, including the type of care provided, the characteristics of patients and nursing staff, as well as the organizational context. Furthermore, different methods of calculating and estimating workload are analyzed, ranging from workload calculation systems to advanced predictive models. Finally, reflection is made on future research avenues, particularly concerning the identification of factors influencing workload, data collection and processing, and model validation., Comment: in French language

Computer Science - Computers and Society - Abstract
Language models (LM or LLM) are increasingly deployed in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications, but the question arises as to whether they can be a common resource managed and maintained by a community of users. Indeed, the dominance of private companies with exclusive access to massive data and language processing resources can create inequalities and biases in LM, as well as obstacles to innovation for those who do not have the same resources necessary for their implementation. In this contribution, we examine the concept of the commons and its relevance for thinking about LM. We highlight the potential benefits of treating the data and resources needed to create LMs as commons, including increased accessibility, equity, and transparency in the development and use of AI technologies. Finally, we present a case study centered on the Hugging Face platform, an open-source platform for deep learning designed to encourage collaboration and sharing among AI designers., Comment: in French language. Quantitative Biology - Other Quantitative Biology - Abstract
From 1994, we began to use ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) in the diagnosis of PCP. This is aELISA for capturing antigens (PACE) possibly contained in the samples. The advantage of this test comes from the fact that it is completelyindependent of cell cultures. In addition, it is fast: the result can be obtained in less than 36 hours. A study of its standardizationcarried out in Australia gave a sensitivity (Se) of 99%, a specificity (Sp) close to 100% and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 99.7%. Due to its high specificity, the test gives a negative result to all true negatives, in other words, the negatives of the test correspond to thetrue negatives. A variant of the capture ELISA, the CTB-ELISA or complex trapping blocking ELISA allows the quantity of antibodies to be measureddirected against the non-structural protein, p80 (or NS3), contained in animal sera. Evaluation of the level of anti-NS3 antibodiesconstitutes an excellent assessment of the level of neutralizing antibodies because the correlation coefficient between these two types of antibodies, the firstobtained by CTB-ELISA, and the second by serum neutralization (VNT), is very high (r = 0.98).The two tests being capable, one of detecting pestiviral antigens and the other of measuring antibodies specific to each of thegroups, constitutes an excellent tool for the qualitative control of anti-CSF vaccine., Comment: in French language

Quantitative Biology - Populations and Evolution ,Physics - Geophysics - Abstract
The Cartographic Assessment of Ecological Potential (CARPO) allows users to characterize the ecological context of a group of sites at several scales (its perimeter and surrounding area) and on the basis of 4 themes: biodiversity zonings, land use (major types of environment, natural character and degree of permeability of territories), ecological connectivity (biodiversity reservoirs and corridors, non-fragmentation of the sector studied), as well as the richness of the territory in terms of heritage species. It is based on a battery of 8 indicators linked to these themes and a system of evaluation thresholds, used to define 3 levels of ecological potential (average, strong and very strong) for each indicator and at each scale of study. The level of potentiality reflects the importance that an ecological element takes on in a study area, and therefore the degree of contribution and responsibility of a site in maintaining this element favorable to biodiversity. It also translates into an alert level for biodiversity that needs to be taken into account at a site. The ecological diagnosis is materialized by means of a cartographic atlas containing a set of commented maps and figures, as well as evaluation grids and radars for the various indicators.CARPO is a decision-making tool, as it enables users to compare the ecological potential within a site with that of its surroundings, in order to define preservation, management or restoration actions; and to compare the extent of potential between the different sites in the group, with a goal of prioritizing action. This guide presents the methodological framework for applying CARPO to a group of sites., Comment: in French language

Quantitative Biology - Populations and Evolution - Abstract
The Black Grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) is an emblematic alpine species with high conservation importance. The population size of these mountain bird tends to decline on the reference sites and shows differences according to changes in local landscape characteristics. Habitat changes are at the centre of the identified pressures impacting part or all of its life cycle, according to experts. Hence, an approach to monitor population dynamics, is trough modelling the favourable habitats of Black Grouse breeding (nesting sites). Then, coupling modelling with multi-source remote sensing data (medium and very high spatial resolution), allowed the implementation of a spatial distribution model of the species. Indeed, the extraction of variables from remote sensing helped to describe the area studied at appropriate spatial and temporal scales: horizontal and vertical structure (heterogeneity), functioning (vegetation indices), phenology (seasonal or inter-annual dynamics) and biodiversity. An annual time series of radiometric indices (NDVI, NDWI, BI {\ldots}) from Sentinel-2 has made it possible to generate Dynamic Habitat Indices (DHIs) to derive phenological indications on the nature and dynamics of natural habitats. In addition, very high resolution images (SPOT6) provided access to the fine structure of natural habitats, i.e. the vertical and horizontal organisation by states identified as elementary (mineral, herbaceous, low and high woody). Indeed, one of the essential limiting factors for brood rearing is the presence of a well-developed herbaceous or ericaceous stratum in the northern Alps and larch forests in the southern region. A deep learning model was used to classify elementary strata. Finally, Biomod2 R platform, using an ensemble approach, was applied to model, the favourable habitat of Black Grouse reproduction. Of all the models, Random Forest and Extreme Boosted Gradient are the best performing, with TSS and ROC scores close to 1. For the SDM, we selected only Random Forest models (ensemble modelling) because of their low susceptibility to overfitting and coherent predictions (after comparing model predictions). In this ensemble model, the most important explanatory variables are altitude, the proportion of heathland, and the DHI (NDVI Max and NDWI Max). Results from the habitat model can be used as an operational tool for monitoring forest landscape shifts and changes. In addition, to delimiting potential areas to protect the species habitat, which constitute a valuable decision-making tool for conservation management of mountain open forest., Comment: in French language

Computer Science - Information Retrieval - Abstract
Patents and scientific papers provide an essential source for measuring science and technology output, to be used as a basis for the most varied scientometric analyzes. Authors' and inventors' names are the key identifiers to carry out these analyses, which however, run up against the issue of disambiguation. By extension identifying inventors who are also academic authors is a non-trivial challenge. We propose a method using the International Patent Classification (IPC) and the IPCCAT API to assess the degree of similarity of patents and papers abstracts of a given inventor, in order to match both types of documents. The method is developed and manually qualified based on three corpora of patents extracted from the international EPO database Espacenet. Among a set of 4679 patents and 7720 inventors, we obtain 2501 authors. The proposed algorithm solves the general problem of disambiguation with an error rate lower than 5%., Comment: in French language

Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence ,Computer Science - Multiagent Systems - Abstract
In this work, we proposed a new dynamic distributed planning approach that is able to take into account the changes that the agent introduces on his set of actions to be planned in order to take into account the changes that occur in his environment. Our approach fits into the context of distributed planning for distributed plans where each agent can produce its own plans. According to our approach the generation of the plans is based on the satisfaction of the constraints by the use of the genetic algorithms. Our approach is to generate, a new plan by each agent, whenever there is a change in its set of actions to plan. This in order to take into account the new actions introduced in its new plan. In this new plan, the agent takes, each time, as a new action set to plan all the old un-executed actions of the old plan and the new actions engendered by the changes and as a new initial state; the state in which the set of actions of the agent undergoes a change. In our work, we used a concrete case to illustrate and demonstrate the utility of our approach., Comment: Master's thesis, in French language

Academic institutions and their staff use, adapt and create software. We're thinking of business tools used to carry out their mission: teaching management (Moodle) or subject teaching support (such as Maxima for formal calculus), for example. We're talking about software resulting from research work, designed by a researcher or a team as part of a research project (funded by ANR, Europe, etc. or not) or as a research service for a third party. These projects can last for decades (such as the Coq program proof assistant project, or the GPAC multimedia content distribution platform). We discuss why this software is produced, with what resources, the interest that institutions derive from it, what we call the ''valorization'' of software resulting from scientific research. The latter is multifaceted, as are the missions of scientific institutions: social value (contribution to the world heritage of knowledge), financial value (contracts), economic value (business creation), scientific value (publication), image value (visibility of the institution among target audiences: students, researchers, companies, prescribers)., Comment: in French language

In this article, we explore the notion of infinity by studying Cantor's contribution to this field. A brief history of set theory is given. As an example of infinity, we consider Hilbert's famous hotel. A graphical construction is used to demonstrate the countability of rationals. Cantor's diagonal procedure is explored, demonstrating that the infinity of real numbers is greater than that of integers. There is therefore a hierarchy of infinities, enabling us to elaborate on the continuum hypothesis, which remains an unsolved problem in mathematics., Comment: 14 pages, in French language, 4 figures,5 Pictures

The elasticity of the DTW metric provides a more flexible comparison between time series and is used in numerous machine learning domains such as classification or clustering. However, it does not align the measurements at the beginning and end of time series if they have a shift occurring right at the start of one series, with the omitted part appearing at the end of that series. Due to the cyclicity of such series - which lack a definite beginning or end - we rely on the Cyclic DTW approach to propose a less computationally expensive approximation of this calculation method. This approximation will then be employed in conjunction with the K-Means clustering method., Comment: in French language. Recent advances in material technology and in micro- and nano-electronics have profoundly changed the design of intracranial electrophysiology electrodes. It is now possible to manufacture electrodes that record cortical activity at a spatial resolution that was previously unthinkable. This high spatial resolution enables recording of the functional structures of the brain, and differentiation of the activity of the different types of neurons composing them. In this paper, we present a review of the different types of electrodes now available, and then suggest one of the first applications for such high resolution electrodes, namely a means to better characterise the mechanisms that generate focal seizures in epileptics. Through these two case studies, we will see how different alternatives to the current spatio-temporal implementations of the Internet allow us to identify the agency dimensions of these acts of hijacking and substitution, characterizing two quite different approaches to decentralized protocols, yet linked by a technical similarity., Comment: in French language

For any d-web by curves in an ambiant n-dimensional manifold, we define a tautological connection on some associated bundle, whose curvature vanishes iff the web has a maximal (n-1)-rank. Both lectures focus on the first part of the so-called 'mathematical part' of Plato's Theaetetus. In this passage, the young Theaetetus briefly recounts the mathematical lesson given by the geometer Theodorus. The first lecture delves into the figures drawn by Theodorus, while the second explores his methods of proof. Here, we present a new translation and a new interpretation of this passage. Both lectures are based on a collaborative work in progress with Luc Brisson., Comment: in French language

Event of the same type occurring several times for one individual (recurrent events) are present in various domains (industrial systems reliability, episodes of unemployment, political conflicts, chronic diseases episodes). Analysis of such kind of data should account for the whole recurrence process dynamics rather than only focusing on the number of observed events. Statistical models for recurrent events analysis are developed in the counting process probabilistic framework. One of the often-used models is the Andersen-Gill model, a generalization of the well-known Cox model for durations, which assumes that the baseline intensity of the recurrence process is time-dependent and is adjusted for covariates. For an individual i with covariates Xi, the intensity is as follows: $\lambda$_{ik}(t;$\theta$) = $\lambda$_0(t) exp (X_i $\beta$). The baseline intensity can be specified parametrically, in a form of Weibull: $\lambda$_0 (t) = $\gamma$_{1} $\gamma$_{2} t^{$\gamma$_2-1}, with $\gamma$1 scale parameter et $\gamma$2 shape parameter. However, the observed covariates are often insufficient to explain the observed heterogeneity in data. This is often the case of clinical trials data containing information on patients. In this article a mixture model for recurrent events analysis is proposed. This model allows to account for unobserved heterogeneity and to cluster individuals according to their recurrence process. The intensity of the process is parametrically specified within each class and depend on observed covariates. Thus, the intensity becomes specific to class k: $\lambda$_{ik} (t; $\theta$_k) = $\gamma$_{1k} $\gamma$_{2k} t^{$\gamma$_{2k}-1} exp (X_i $\beta$_k). The model parameters are estimated by the Maximum Likelihood method, using the EM algorithm. The BIC criterion is employed to choose the optimal number of classes. Model feasibility is verified by Monte Carlo simulations. An application to real data concerning hospital readmissions of elderly patients is proposed. The proposed model feasibility is empirically verified (the optimization algorithm converges, providing non-biased estimates). The real data application allows to identify two clinically relevant classes of patients., Comment: in French, 54es Journ{\'e}es de Statistique, Jul 2023, Bruxelles (BEL), France

We prove some triviality results for reduced Whitehead groups and reduced unitary Whitehead groups for division algebras over a henselian discrete valuation field whose residue field has virtual cohomological dimension or separable dimension $\le 2$. These results are applied to show strong approximation for isotropic absolutely almost simple simply connected groups of type A. In particular, such a group defined over the function field of a nonreal curve $C/k$ satisfies strong approximation if the base field $k$ is a number field, a $p$-adic field, $\mathbb{C}(\!(t)\!)$ or a two-variable function field over $\mathbb{R}$., Comment: in French language

R{\'e}union is a European island in the heart of the Indian Ocean, far from the resources of mainland France. It's an island rich in diversity, and faces a number of societal challenges. Many players are working together to support the transformation of its societal model towards one based on territorial and collective resilience. In this article, we propose to look back at the studies and experiments carried out over the last few years in La R{\'e}union by a research group working in the field of multi-agent simulation, and to use examples to show how this approach can contribute in a very concrete way to the processes of understanding and manufacturing behavioral and spatial planning models for a territory. We begin by outlining the basic principles of the multi-agent approach, then present our feedback from experiments in various fields of territorial foresight. The article concludes with a presentation of the research team's approach to forging links between stakeholders involved in territorial transformation, through the facilitation of a think-tank., Comment: in French language. 2{\`e}me rencontre scientifique sur les TERritoires INTelligents (TERINT2023), Universit{\`a} Di Corsica, Jul 2023, Ajaccio (20000), France

Towns and cities are currently equipping themselves with a host of connected devices, with a view to transforming themselves into ''smart cities''. To manage this mass of connected objects, autonomous software entities, known as agents, can be attached to them to cooperate and use these devices to offer personalized services. However, this object infrastructure needs to be semantically structured in order to be exploited. This is why the proposal of this article is an ontology, formatted in OWL, describing the object infrastructures, their links with the organization of the multi-agent system and the services to be delivered according to the users of the system. The ontology is applied to smart mobility for people with reduced mobility, and could be adapted to other smart city axes., Comment: in French language

Computer Science - Computers and Society - Abstract
Growing awareness of the environmental impact of digital technologies has led to several isolated initiatives to promote sustainable practices. However, despite these efforts, the environmental footprint of generative AI, particularly in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption, remains considerable. This contribution first presents the components of this environmental footprint, highlighting the massive CO2 emissions and water consumption associated with training large language models, thus underlining the need to rethink learning and inference methods. The paper also explores the factors and characteristics of models that have an influence on their environmental footprint and demonstrates the existence of solutions to reduce it, such as using more efficient processors or optimising the energy performance of data centres. The potentially harmful effects of AI on the planet and its ecosystem have made environmental protection one of the founding principles of AI ethics at international and European levels. However, this recognition has not yet translated into concrete measures to address it.To address this issue, our contribution puts forward twelve pragmatic recommendations for public action to promote sustainable generative AI, in particular by building a long-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality for AI models, encouraging international cooperation to set common standards, supporting scientific research and developing appropriate legal and regulatory frameworks. This paper seeks to inform the members of the Interministerial Committee on Generative AI about the environmental challenges of this technology by providing a brief review of the scientific literature on the subject and proposing concrete recommendations of public policy actions to reconcile technological innovation with the need to protect our environment., Comment: in French language

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The centre of the Milky Way hosts a supermassive black hole of 4 million solar masses called Sagittarius A*. This object has been observed for more than 20 years in the near infrared. This has confirmed some effects of General Relativity. In addition, recurrent observations have made it possible to detect flares, i.e. a much larger flux than the average, with a variability of the order of 30 minutes to 1 hour. In 2018, GRAVITY, using the 4 large telescopes of the VLTI/ESO, observed an orbital motion of the source of these flares. This thesis focuses on the modelling of these flares, using models of varying complexity, including one based on the phenomenon of magnetic reconnection. The latter corresponds to an abrupt change in the magnetic configuration around the black hole, releasing a large amount of energy. We are also looking at the problem of polarisation in General Relativity., Comment: PhD Thesis, 258 pages, written in French

In healthcare, patient data is often collected as multivariate time series, providing a comprehensive view of a patient's health status over time. While this data can be sparse, connected devices may enhance its frequency. The goal is to create patient profiles from these time series. In the absence of labels, a predictive model can be used to predict future values while forming a latent cluster space, evaluated based on predictive performance. We compare two models on Withing's datasets, M AGMAC LUST which clusters entire time series and DGM${}^2$ which allows the group affiliation of an individual to change over time (dynamic clustering)., Comment: in French language. Macroscopic diversity in radiomobile systems is a technique in which the terminal is in parallel connection with two base stations. It is a fundamental element in the operation of third generation mobile networks using CDMA. (IS 95, UMTS, etc.). A representation of the propagation phenomena involved requires joint modeling of the two transmission channels. The article presents a very simple method for simultaneously measuring their impulse responses, developed for this purpose. This method was the subject of a patent. It can more generally be applied to any number of channels and should allow the reuse of already existing single-channel sounders., Comment: in French language. GRETSI, Sep 1999, Vannes, France

Physics - Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability - Abstract
The "100-year flood" is commonly used, for instance in newspapers, but flood hazard assessment is more complex than it seems. We first describe an animation entitled "bag of floods" to make flood quantiles more concrete, using marbles whose colour corresponds to a class of return period. Discussing the analogies and differences between drawing a marble from the bag and the next annual flood make it easier to explain that flood hazard assessment (i) must not be focussed on the "100-yr flood", (ii) is often expressed as a probability over one given year, but for planning it should be estimated over a much longer duration (like successive draws from the bag) and (iii) variability is significant and matters. Scripts allowing to simulate long series of draws confirm that empirical probabilities get close to theoretical probabilities, but also illustrate less intuitive results : on average one quarter of 100 successive draws, contains two floods or more with a discharge exceeding the "100-yr discharge". To go further, Sample2Gumbel is a teaching tool drawing annual maxima discharges. It compares on a graph (i) a "real distribution", coded in the script and used to draw a sample, (ii) the sample expressed with respect to "plotting position", expressed as a return period but which is in fact a crude estimation to allow plotting, (iii) the distribution fitted on the sample. This demo tool illustrates the variability of different tries, with samples of the same length, and shows how uncertainty evolves with the sample size. To improve it, more distributions could be included, and damage estimation could be added., Comment: in French language: Novatech 2023, 11e conf{\'e}rence internationale ''L'eau dans la ville'', Novatech, Jul 2023, Lyon, France

Relying on the formalism developed by Alexander Beilinson and Takeshi Saito, we compute the characteristic cycle of an external symmetric power of a tame \'etale sheaf on a curve. This generalizes a result of G\'erard Laumon in characteristic 0 and leads to a result of local acyclicity of the Abel-Jacobi morphism, due to Pierre Deligne and motivated by his geometric approach to the product formula for the determinant of cohomology (epsilon factor)., Comment: in French language. v2:Shortly after the submission on arXiv, Will Sawin kindly informed us that he had obtained in arXiv:1907.08098 a more general formula for the characteristic cycle than the one which we obtained (independently) in this text

Physics - Geophysics - Abstract
Monitoring water stage and discharge at hydrometric stations is essential for flood characterization and prediction. Continuous measurement is feasible for stage records, whereas discharge must be calculated, typically using a rating curve. Several methods have been developed, such as surface velocity measurement or rating curve methods. Nevertheless, hydrometric stations may be influenced by tidal fluctuations, leading to transient flow conditions that can disrupt the stage-discharge relation, complicating the accurate estimation of discharge. In the case of a quasi-unsteady flow, the dynamic can be managed by a relationship between water level, elevation, and discharge based on the Manning-Strickler formula and measurements of water level and slope of the waterline. However, in unsteady flow, when tidal effects are pronounced, these types of relationships and their variations have proven to be less effective. To capture the complex flow dynamics, including flow reversal, an approach via a 1D hydrodynamic model is proposed. Here, model estimation refers to estimating the posterior distribution of parameters and the structural error model. To set up the model, the cross-sectional geometry, friction coefficient, upstream discharge(s), and downstream water level are necessary. In hydrodynamic modeling, the friction coefficients, often represented through a set of Strickler coefficients, are the main calibration parameter, but manual calibration is difficult due to spatial variations in roughness combined with unsteady flow. Furthermore, understanding and quantifying uncertainties associated with data and the model are an important step in the calibration process. Therefore, automatic calibration of friction coefficients is proposed through Bayesian inference. In terms of numerical tools, the 1D hydrodynamic code used here is Mage, developed by INRAE, which solves the 1D Saint-Venant equations for river flows and transients. However, the proposed method is not specific to a given simulation code: it can be applied to any usual 1D hydrodynamic code. Bayesian calibration is performed using the software BaM! (Bayesian modeling: https://github.com/BaM-tools), which allows specifying prior information on model parameters (in this case, friction coefficients) to then estimate them with associated uncertainties, using observations themselves with their uncertainties (not only water levels but also gauging campaigns)., Comment: in French language, Colloque SHF "Pr{\'e}vision des crues et des inondations -- Avanc{\'e}es, valorisation et perspectives'', Soci{\'e}t{\'e} Hydrotechnique de France (SHF), Nov 2023, Toulouse, France

Invented by Kurt Hensel at the very end of 19th century on the model of power series in one indeterminate, the $p$-adic numbers have not only become an indispensable tool of contemporary arithmetic, but a research topic per se. In this text, stemming out two talks at the 2023 X-UPS lectures, I shall explain their construction, how they fit in a vaster framework, between analysis and arithmetic, where two constructions bearing the name of Isaac Newton play a central role : Newton's method and Newton's polygon.
