Qualitative research is, oftentimes, an emotional, relational, political and intellectual rollercoaster ride. This heightens the risk of methodological, ethical and relational fallouts. Constructivist grounded theory enables researchers to confront the multiple ways in which deeply embedded aspects of identity, personal values, biases and emergent research relationships impact the research process. In this article, we demonstrate how a reflexive stance in constructivist grounded theory enhances bracketing and loosens the grip of both positionality and methodolatry. The discussion draws on the lived experiences of conducting and supervising autobiographically inclined doctoral research. The article underscores the need for a strong reflexive stance, not just during fieldwork, but right from the onset, at the conceptualisation stage. In this article, we consider the ethical obligations that LGBTQIA+ researchers have in researching LGBTQIA+ rights. First, we consider the potential impact of identity and positionality. Although people of all LGBTQIA+ identities share common experiences of marginalisation and persecution, there is much diversity among LGBTQIA+ people and their many intersections. We then propose that LGBTQIA+ researchers should act as 'internal allies' when undertaking work related to LGBTQIA+ communities. The familiar concept of allyship imposes obligations which are dynamic, appropriate for the research context and align with community expectations. This paper explores the characteristics of relationships in SoTL, informed by the lived experiences of the authors. We situate our discussion in literature relating to relationship-rich education and academic hospitality, and propose three features that characterize SoTL-focused relationships: acts of giving, vulnerability and trust, and service. Taken together, and drawing on existing literature, we present the notion of Relational Hospitality as a key aspect of SoTL-focused relationships. The development of this piece itself was a relational act: The authors weave through insights drawn from multiple conversations, each conversation building on shared reflections, co-creating commonalities and questions, and collaborative editing of each other's writing. This chapter explores the concept of allyship in social justice struggles. It provides a road map for self-reflection as well as acquisition of skills necessary for effective allyship. It describes appropriate roles for allies in dismantling systems and structures that protect the privilege of the majority in various contexts – privilege often unseen, unacknowledged and/or actively denied. This chapter will examine unique roles of allies in exposing, challenging, and dismantling privilege and white supremacy. Concrete examples of benefits that have accrued to white Americans through privilege – both conscious and unconscious, are assessed. The reader will be encouraged to explore personal areas of privilege and marginalization and acknowledge multidimensional identities (race, ethnicity, gender, class, ability, etc.) of individuals and unique lived experiences. Within various African cultures, discussion of sexuality is typically secretive and reticent. Because of the multiple and sometimes contradictory narratives about sexuality, researching it in this context remains a very sensitive and knitted terrain, requiring careful navigation of historical, sociocultural and religious factors. The state of such scholarship in Nigeria is here explored critically, drawing on my experience of studying traditional aphrodisiacs in Ilorin. In this article, I present a reflection on the epistemological grounding of that work, my positionality and fieldwork experience, as well as the dilemmas, challenges and the politics of researching sexuality in Nigeria. I argue that the complexity of a researcher's identity and embodiments is not to be treated as redundant; instead, it needs to be taken into account in legitimate and productive ways. Focusing on these elements and experiences during fieldwork revealed how researchers can have the opportunity to contour, compound and contribute to a qualitative study. The phenomena referred to as terrorism and political violence have become a major object of academic interest over the past two decades. While the lack of first-hand data collection has been criticised, a growing number of researchers are conducting field research and interviews with individuals involved in these phenomena. Among them, there are scholars with ethnic, cultural or religious subjectivities that place them sometimes as insiders and other times as outsiders with respect to their research subjects. The way this insider/outsider-positionality impacts the research is explored in this paper through my experience as a scholar of politicoideological violence which is analysed using the tool of autoethnography. The findings point to the difficulties related to navigating a securitised identity in a securitised research field and to the fact that while the Arab-Muslim identity can often facilitate access to the field, on other times it can become a major obstacle. In this paper, I reflect on various ethical, practical and methodological challenges encountered in the field during my anthropological inquiry into the legacies of the Bosnian genocide at home and abroad. I focus on the importance of the researcher's honesty and self-reflexive engagement with the subject(s), particularly in sensitive contexts such as genocide. I discuss my experience of negotiating various social roles ascribed to me in the field, and how they shaped my research process. I also consider the methodological challenges of working with difficult stories of surviving the genocide and the absences of family members who perished in it. Drawing upon a mixed ethnography approach in combination with narrative inquiry and elements of participatory action research (PAR), I demonstrate complexities inherent in long-term ethnographic engagement with the community life that almost vanished. I reflexively engage with the question of how we maintain intellectual, emotional and ethical engagement with the subject of research without sacrificing our academic integrity or human connection embedded within these interactions? Subsequently, I argue for a supportive scholarly space that welcomes discussion about vulnerabilities, ambiguities and fears encountered in the ethnographic field and emerging subjectivities which further shape the final interpretation of cultures. This article links design research in local contexts to the methodological issues of positionality and self-reflexivity. A critical examination of design's relationship with the local context indicates a need for self-reflexive methodologies as means of addressing power imbalances in the field, deciphering prejudices, and maintaining receptivity to diverse ways of knowing and approaches to knowledge. Drawing upon the first author's experience of fieldwork in a Turkish village, this article delves into the fluidity of positioning in the field. It self-reflexively examines the impact of the positionality of identities claimed and assigned during the research process, the relations and interactions that occurred in the field and the construction of the research text. While promoting self-reflexivity as a tool for critically engaged research, the article also addresses how design researchers in the local context might associate these methodological insights to their own studies. Responding to De postkoloniale spiegel and De nieuwe koloniale leeslijst, this article exposes how few Indonesian voices are heard in conversations on colonial history in the Netherlands today. Representations of the Dutch East Indies as colony prevail over conceptions of Indonesia as independent nation. Through a reading of Gentayangan by Intan Paramaditha, we decentre readings of colonial literature in Dutch Studies by turning to Indonesian literature in translation. Like colonial indies literature preoccupied with nostalgia, this book is also haunted by memory, but of a different anti-colonial character. As Paramaditha's character journeys around the world she is discomforted by Dutch nostalgia for tempo doeloe in the Netherlands, but finds solidarity in encounters with other wanderers who have faced colonization and racialized oppression in different contexts. In our reading of this text in translation, we lean on theories in memory studies to consider: How might Gentayangan as a demonstration of ongoing coloniality support the shift towards a more worldly approach in Dutch Studies? Are postcolonial re-readings from Western loci of meaning-making enough – as found in Spiegel and Leeslijst – or are there more innovative ways to decolonize Dutch Studies by implicating oneself in the power dynamics of ongoing coloniality? In the wake of the US-led and Pakistan-allied "war on terror", residents in Northwest Pakistan have faced inconceivable structural and physical violence, in ways that pose ethical challenges in ethnographic writing and research. Over the last few decades, militancy, banditry and overall insecurity have hampered relief efforts in the area and significantly weakened basic infrastructure. In this article, the author illustrates how an initial security plan to undertake fieldwork research in this "volatile" region proved somewhat irrelevant because of her positionality, gender and race/ethnicity. The author explores the implications of these dynamics in contexts characterized by unequal gender relations and strict gender segregation. In addition, undertaking empirical work in the context of epistemological frameworks in a region that has been subjected to active conflict, militarised operations and a singular representation in the global and local media, poses other ethical challenges for anthropologists searching for new areas of study and decolonised models of representation. This paper reiterates the importance of a reflexive approach of ethics that acknowledges the interpenetration of race, gender and the thick web of relationships in the production of knowledge and is, at the same time, respectful of cultural specificity. • We compare Foucaultian vs. Lefebvrian heterotopias as an analytical approach to community-based art projects. • We study Hirschhorn's Monument to Gramsci as a test case study for our approach. • We critically discuss artist positionality and deontological responsibility of artistic agency. • We assess the consequences on marginal communities of top-down hegemonic artistic agency. Artistic interventions in the public domain are often legitimized as opportunities for the empowerment of local communities. However, the nature of such interventions is complex and cannot be inferred from stated intentions. The interaction between agents of cultural and artistic interventions and local communities is shaped by power relationships that are seldom made explicit, let alone negotiated. Here, we analyze The Gramsci Monument , a site-specific project by Thomas Hirschhorn that took place in the Forest House neighborhood (Bronx, New York) in 2013. The project has been celebrated as an example of an emancipatory practice that involved a disenfranchised local community. We show that it could be rather taken as an example of how art-driven space domestication may lead to forms of alienation and paternalism without actual sharing of creative responsibility and negotiation with the local community. Feminist research involves critical analysis of power, including positionality—the multiple identities and power hierarchies surrounding researchers. While analysis of positionalities (referred to as "reflexivity") is relatively common in certain sectors, in the humanitarian sector, it is almost non-existent. Humanitarian-led research is often assumed to be objective. Despite momentum around decolonising and localising humanitarian aid, which has brought analysis of power sharply into focus, analysis done by humanitarian organisations has largely focused on power hierarchies at the institutional level, rather than how the individual positionalities of researchers might affect research led by humanitarian actors. In this article, I reflect on experiences as a minority-ethnicity researcher conducting anthropological fieldwork among Syrian refugees in Jordan. My experiences highlight how the intersections between race, gender and age profoundly shape research, challenging assumptions of "objective" humanitarian research. Critical realist thought has theorised convincingly that epistemic relativism is constellationally embedded in ontological realism which in turn necessitates judgemental rationality. In social science, judgemental rationality involves acting upon plausible decisions about competing points of view. However, the tools for doing this are, as yet, under-articulated. This paper addresses this absence by articulating triangulation and depth-reflexivity as two tools for doing judgemental rationality in empirical research. It draws on the experiences of a diverse team working on an international comparative research project on conversion to Islam in prisons. It demonstrates how epistemic and relational gaps between researchers and research subjects can be bridged by mobilising the 'laminated' properties and personal attributes of a diverse research team that factors in attributes that are absent as well as those present. Transhumanism, race, gender, and cultural identity in early 21st century popular culture movies: Black Panther; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; and Wonder Woman is the focus of this essay. Transhumanism refers to a super-powered human, able to transcend conventional human capabilities and accomplish physical, psychic, intellectual, and emotional feats of strength and perseverance such as extra sensory perception and the ability to fly. Three authors examine how their positionality impacted their experiences of the movies' narratives, characterizations, and significance. Based on ethnographies conducted in post-genocide communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Bosnian refugee diaspora groups in Australia, Europe and the USA, and fieldwork on the island of Tanna (Vanuatu), in this article I discuss the challenges of the researcher and the researched in negotiating the space between perceived cultural insiderness and professional outsiderness. Firstly, I start by outlining the concept of academic kinship, the intellectual and social connections and networks that sustain and set the parameters for the researcher's construction of reality. Building upon the idea of kinship and elective affinity, I then move on to discuss examples from the fieldwork and literature relating to "doubly-engaged ethnography" (PACHECO-VEGA & PARIZEAU, 2018, p.1)--involving both emic and etic perspectives--and consider ethics and politics of this research approach. I conclude with an ethnographic vignette from my fieldwork on an island of strangers, highlighting how the mutual commitment to elective affinity and embracing both emic and etic perspectives create a dynamic research context in which different engagements in the field open up a conceptual space where the local and the global intersect, and where the roles of researched and researcher, insiders and outsiders, continue to be negotiated and (re)defined. Background: Case-based learning has historically focused on the individual patient; however, there is often little consideration within this teaching method of how social determinants of health, such as structural racism and its adverse health effects, bear upon patients' health status and consequent patient outcomes. Problem: Implementing case studies necessitates taking into account the positionality of patients, as well as health care providers, to counter the racial oppression and discrimination embedded in existing health care and educational systems. Approach: We describe a process for creating an inclusive, antiracist environment for case-based learning within nursing education, outlining steps for preparing students to more effectively examine case studies through social determinants of health framing and lens to mitigate harmful impacts from systemic racism and racial discrimination in clinical care. This paper introduces an innovative method for enhanced researcher reflexivity: the use of synchronous collective writing as a space to collaboratively reflect on experiences of subjectification within the contemporary academy. We explore how, despite its apparent importance to contemporary research, the neoliberalisation of academia leaves little room for meaningful reflexivity. The authors in this paper – ranging from Master's student to postdoctoral researcher – wrote collaboratively in real-time to organically develop a method of collective reflexivity. Through auto-ethnographic vignettes that act as raw data, and a critical analysis of how we came to experience the events showcased in these vignettes, we analyse how our positionalities shape both our subjection to, and perpetuation of, systems of symbolic violence in neoliberal academic institutions. Through this method, we explore experiences of the contemporary university as patriarchal, intensively marketised, and as a space where the prevalence of 'weak' reflexivity has negative impacts on research ethics. We argue that the affect of collaborative writing spaces acts as a resistance against our experiences of loneliness, competition and individualism. This case study explores the use of collaborative book clubs and word sorts to influence teacher positionality in an undergraduate social studies methods course for pre-service teachers. Drawing upon existing literature that suggests the effectiveness of dialogue as a means of navigating prior beliefs and the benefits of collaborative spaces for teachers to engage in collegial discussions, the study utilized books surrounding socio-political themes and educational inequalities to prompt conversation among participants. Results of the study suggest that dialogic and collaborative activities like word sorts and book clubs provide productive opportunities for pre-service teachers to (re)negotiate their positionalities and grapple with their existing assumptions as they learn and co-construct meaning from and with one another. At the same time, the pre-service teachers' perceptions of privilege and identity seem to remain somewhat unexamined and the teachers remain hesitant about the practical reality of working to dismantle inequalities in their own classrooms. Grenzen überschreiten, gemeinsam gestalten: Ein interdisziplinärer Dialog zur transdisziplinären Wissensproduktion«. Due to the Corona pandemic, it was necessary to cancel the conference "Positionality Reloaded. Dimensions of Reflexivity in the Relationship of Science and Society" at short notice. At the time, in May 2020, it was quite uncertain how far-reaching the consequences of the pandemic would be. This also affected the panel discussion that we had planned in order to collect practical and application-oriented perspectives on transdisciplinarity in academics. As restrictions of traveling and gatherings on social events across the globe intensified, digital conferences gradually developed into an effective format for academic exchange. In this respect, we were thrilled when we were able to save the two-hour panel discussion "Crossing Borders, Creating Together: An Interdisciplinary Dialogue on Transdisciplinary Knowledge Production" on 15 June 2020 using a live video broadcast. The main questions from the conference served as a guide: To what extent do academic publications and knowledge production rely on reflexivity and self-reflection? What consequences does this have for the selfpositioning of researchers in the tense relationship between academia and society? The question of how meaningful academic activities are in society and for society correlates directly with the question of the relevance of transdisciplinary research, that is occasionally addressed as a possibility, a demand, a request, or even a necessity. While the other contributions in this collection primarily discuss these questions from a theoretical standpoint, the panel discussion was conceived as an "empirical counterpart." The objective was to explore and discuss the opportunities and challenges that arise in transdisciplinary research practice from different functional perspectives: such as political and mobility research, medicine, or architecture and urban planning. Dekolonisierung sozialwissenschaftlicher Methodologie. Positionalität in der deutschsprachigen Debatte«. The debate on decolonizing the social sciences is intrinsically linked to debates about objectivity, subjectivity, and positionality because postcolonial scholars criticize the idea that "objective" knowledge is possible and argue that research findings are influenced by researchers' subjectivity and positionality. However, when empirically addressing issues such as social or global inequality, objectivity and comparability would be direly needed. This dilemma is often hidden because the current postcolonial debate focusses on theory rather than methodology and methods and ignores differences in epistemic cultures. Using the German-language debates on objectivity and subjectivity, I illustrate that social science methodology has suggested some solutions to handling positionality, namely a reflexive methodology and an empirically-grounded epistemology, using social theory, using methods, and collaborating. I use my own research style to illustrate what applying these techniques might mean in research practice and point to some blind spots that methodological research should address in future research, amongst them reintegrating theory and methods, overcoming power structures in the global system of science, handling language, and decolonizing ethnography. Reflexivität und seine Grenzen bei der Untersuchung sozialer Ungleichheit «. This article argues that while great strides have been made in understanding the socially constructed nature of much empirical (qualitative) data, the challenge this presents to notions of "objective" social science, and therefore the requirement for all researchers to undertake reflexive work, there are limits to such undertakings. Against a vital social requirement for individuals to act reflexively in analysing their own positioning and privilege, I want to caution against placing too much emphasis on the emancipatory possibilities for researchers of being reflexive in data collection and analysis in the study of social inequalities. Using reflections from Matthew Desmond's work on evictions in the US, the article argues that while personally and socially imperative, reflexivity's central role must remain as a methodological guard against errors emerging from positioning and difference. Reflexive Methodologie und die empirische Wissenschaftstheorie«. Inspired by hermeneutics tradition, qualitative as well as quantitative social research has realized that the subject matter of the social sciences is always interpreted by the actors studied. Social studies of science have also demonstrated that science itself depends on preinterpreted knowledge. In recent decades, it therefore became increasingly clear that any scientific methodology needs to account for the positionality of researchers and their methodology. In addition to the abstract armchair methodologies of scientific "reasoning," reflexive methodology has been proposed as an approach to empirical study of more than just the procedures and methods of the very researchers who are doing research, such as the videography of videography. It is one goal of this paper to stress that reflexive methodology is not a self-contained method describing and analyzing the practical methodology of one's action. To the degree that the analysis of the "real live" method is intended to guide research, reflexive methodology has also normative implications. As these normative implications have been referred to by the label theory of science, the second goal of this presentation is to delineate the idea of empirical theory of science. Positionality Reloaded: Über die Dimensionen der Reflexivität im Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft: Ein Editorial«. It cannot be denied that reflexivity has become a must in social science methodological discourse in recent decades. The uses and functions of reflexivity in the research process have been well addressed historically, be it with regard to researchers' subjectivity, their perspectivity shaped by social origin and biographical life path, or their possible asymmetrical power relations with investigated actors. Nevertheless, we see an urgent need to discuss these issues. We claim that the practice of reflexivity, seriously shaken by the current transformation of (the understandings of) academic knowledge production, has become a challenging duty to fulfill. There is no straight and easy answer to the big questions of "for whom" and "for what purpose" do we produce "what kind of" knowledge and "how." Struggling for an appropriate positioning within global societal developments, we dedicate this special issue to the search for a critical, and the exploration of a lucid, (self-)reflection of academic research. In this respect, this special issue, Positionality Reloaded: Debating the Dimensions of Reflexivity in the Relationship Between Science and Society, sets out to explore how coexisting yet diverse conceptions of academic research and knowledge production can be reflexively considered and related to each other from an epistemological, ethico-normative, and ontological point of view. The title of this special issue, Methodologists, Who Needs 'Em?, prompts authors and readers to consider when and why, if at all, labels are needed to bound the conduct of research. In this introduction, we address how this special issue came to fruition; we explore how and when the term, methodologist, appears in academic journals and job postings related to academic and educational research positions; we contend that methodologies can be perceived as opportunities to learn about meaning making from different vantage points; and we advocate for reflexive examinations of positionalities to achieve greater criticality to address social issues and policy. In all, we argue that the role of the researcher can be multiplicitous and it need not be bound by a professional role, and we envision a future of change supported by methodologies that disrupt imbalances and support equity and justice. This paper discusses how feminist methodologies can be pragmatic and far-ranging, and yet are often not accepted in feminist applied research, within the corporate sector. It raises a pertinent question about the perception of feminism and the challenges in adopting a feminist methodology in practice. It also questions why scholarship, rarely dwells on experiences of feminist action researchers in the Indian context. While documenting the dissent to feminist conscience, this paper deliberates the methodological and epistemological rubrics of feminism, the positionality of the researcher, commodification of feminism, binary overtones and the agency of researchers who are engaged by corporate houses as consultants. Beginning with the question: 'what is involved in studying small international migrant groups in rural areas?', this article makes a methodological contribution to the literature on international migration to rural areas. The article takes as its starting point the 'ethically important moments' (Guillemin and Gillam, 2004) experienced by a researcher with a migration background during ethnographic fieldwork among Polish labour migrants in a rural municipality in Norway. Four interwoven aspects of the fieldwork will be discussed a) cooperation between the researcher and gatekeepers, b) the effects of the visibility of the local community, c) blurring the positionalities of the researcher; and d) the problematics of recurring encounters with the participants. The article introduces a concept of 'relational claustrophobia', which denotes a climate of dense, visible, overlapping and sometimes burdensome social relations in the local migrant community and illustrates its impact on the ethical conduct of the researcher. It concludes that studying small international migrant communities in rural areas may highlight the ethical concerns of a) confidentiality and the privacy of research subjects, b) the management of trust and c) the positionality of the migrant-researcher. • Studying international migrants in rural communities may involve specific ethical challenges. • Social visibility appears as an important feature of rural migrant communities. • Trust management and confidentiality are among the challenges. • Rural social contexts may affect the positionality of the migrant-researcher. • The article postulates a need for further methodological reflections. Design/methodology/approach: This paper includes the author's observations of a senior English class in an international school in South Korea. Findings: The author advocates that intersections of time, geography and culture have a significant influence that cannot be ignored when teaching about adolescence. Additionally, when bringing a Youth Lens into the classroom teachers need to be prepared to fully embrace its embedded questions of power between youth and adults. Originality/value: This paper extends existing academic conversation on a Youth Lens to include both an international setting and instances in which the teacher is not of the majority demographic in the classroom. 'The new walls of Europe reflect crises in Europe's relation to itself and the world' (Wendy Brown, Walled States, Waning Sovereignty, preface to the 2017 edition). In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as elsewhere, populism has been on the rise, and far-right discourse has altered the political landscape. Should we respond with a re-thinking of community or is 'community' itself part of the problem? Can an ethics of alterity (which we find in Levinas) help re-define what we understand by community? As early as 1924, in Grenzen der Gemeinschaft, Helmuth Plessner warned that 'too much' community, far from being positive in an egalitarian sense, can foster aggressive identity-based 'us-versus-them' political sentiment. Plessner, in his major work, Die Stufen des Organischen und der Mensch (1928) develops his idea of 'positionality' and what we might describe as looking at human beings as 'in-between' creatures, bordering on other animals, connected to each other socially, culturally, politically, but also separate. Plessner is searching for a new way of looking at 'borders' — boundaries between connectedness and separation. Almost one hundred years after Plessner's publications, I will argue that they still offer a valuable perspective on the theme of 'border' and one which may help counter the aggressiveness of contemporary western discourse on borders. In my contribution, I will also draw on thinkers from the phenomenological tradition ranging from Bernhard Waldenfels, who has written of the merits of what he calls the 'Stachel' of the other, to Emmanuel Levinas's ethics of alterity. The move to focus on Pacific indigenous research methodologies and methods is a complex yet ongoing experience for researchers of Pacific heritage. The relational positionalities of Pacific researchers allow a move away from a dual or binary perspective of one's research responsibilities to a more fluid understanding of what it means to do research by, for, with Pacific communities. This paper highlights the diverse experiences of three Pacific researchers taking into consideration heritage connections, socio-cultural backgrounds and research contexts. We utilise talanoa as a method of engagement, reflexivity, and sharing of our experiences with Tongan, Samoan and Fijian communities. We argue that talanoa as a Pacific research method enables the diverse layers of experiences that take into particular consideration our connections to land, people and knowledges in the diaspora. Field engagement of the researchers in ethnographic research determines the quality and the rigor of academic work. The engagement of the researcher in the field to elicit information, however, is a result of confidence and/or faith, named trust, that the researcher develops with his/her participants during the research process. Trust-building is a basic but fundamental research phenomenon that a researcher goes through in his/her fieldwork. But how to establish trust with research participants? This article is a reflection based on the product of my fieldwork and narrates my experience of the trust-building process that I had undergone in my research field. Though hailing from the same area, I had entered my ethnographic space like a university researcher rather than my native identity for different reasons. Thus in this paper, I narrate my field experiences of difficulty, reward, and the dilemma of my field journey i.e., difficulty in establishing trust while entering the research field; rewards with my shifting identity (revelation of my native identity) while engaging in the field; and my dilemma in protecting my participants' trust and their voices while exiting from the field. Out of many perspectives and approaches to conceptualize and establish trust, I take one put forth by Williamson (1993), who says trust builds mainly on repeated positive experiences, formally or informally, made over time and longstanding relations, and is built on the initial knowledge about the other. Feminist researchers engage reflexively with questions of how power operates through intersubjective processes like building rapport, obtaining consent, and being accountable in the 'field.' But how do researchers build these connections across embodied and linguistic differences in interlingual research involving local interpretation? In this paper, we delve into our experiences as a foreign researcher and a local interpreter conducting interviews and group discussions with low-income women waste workers in India. We focus on our co-navigations of positionality and power with a focus on language, emotion, and embodiment in connecting with participants and reflect on how interpretation and translation processes can mediate, complicate, and enrich connection-building. We argue that emotional, embodied, and linguistic challenges and opportunities are not uniformly experienced between differently positioned team members and require space to grapple with divergent experiences, understandings, and outcomes that emerge across this nexus. We detail three research encounters, analyzing the nuances of positionality in our divergent roles; our navigations of care and refusal manifesting across the triple subjectivity of encounters; and our strategies for working across languages, embodiment, and emotion in the colonial past-present. Racism operates though material discrimination and through emotions. Racialised subjects feel their location in hierarchical social space, and spatial arrangements can facilitate racial perceptual segregation. The first aim of this article is to discuss which emotions are involved in young people's narrations about their experiences and exposure to racism in Berlin, Germany. Second, it engages with how emotions impact articulations of racism and empathy for those who are racially discriminated against. Out of a larger data corpus consisting of narrative interviews, individual and group, with young people with migration history and various experience of racism, we present three cases which offer us new possibilities to disturb the existing theories of racism and emotions. We believe that the German case is instructive because of the complexity of migrantisation and racialisation that is different to the well-studies American and British contexts. We address the contextual factors in which emotions emerge and are articulated. We consider how our research participants' different socio-spatial positionalities – mobile, local and betwixt - mould their emotional engagements with racism. We also thematise how these positionalities shift in time. • Racism operates locally through various emotions such as anger, sadness or resignation. • Expressing emotions helps young people to talk about experiences of racism. • Racialised subjects feel powerless or angry, depending on their possibilities to pass as white. • Love increases empathy for emotional distress caused by racism. • Racialised young people feel often out-of-place. In this article, I examine my own experience--as a white, American woman, an experienced second language educator, and a novice scholar of forced migration--of becoming an immigrant to Turkey. Approached as a reflexive positionality statement in preparation for my dissertation research with Syrian refugees, I explore my shifting insider and outsider roles and how they inform the evolution of my research design and personal and professional identity. I draw on BOURDIEU's theory of capital and use vignettes from my first year in Turkey to illustrate everyday struggles to navigate interactions through perplexing layers of access and exclusion; to gain social, cultural, and linguistic capital; and, ultimately, to build a life in a new country. In this way, I seek to illuminate the experience of transnational adaptation and integration from the perspective of both a language teacher and learner and a migration scholar and migrant. Abstract Clinical research with sexual minority clients has evolved and has contributed to recognition and affirmation of sexual minorities. This commentary traces a history of research that was at one time based on heteronormative biases, what we refer to as a "first wave" to a movement through a "second wave" of research comparing sexual minorities to heterosexual counterparts in order to adapt existing clinical practices and advocate for them in the context of political challenges and social opposition. We look at the articles in this special issue as exemplary of what may be considered the "third wave" of this research that begins with the assumption that sexual minority populations are unique and valued subcultures and proposes best practices with these populations. Abstract The world is too complex for humans to grasp. Frames and news values (or 'journalistic selection procedures') make it more intelligible, foregrounding salient elements. Giving shape to reality, both concepts cannot be separated from ideological interests, either. Previous research suggests, accordingly, that frames and newsworthiness take shape in mutual interaction. Yet, the exact nature of this interaction remains unclear as in-depth discursive research is lacking. Therefore, we have conducted a combined framing-news value analysis, drawing on a corpus of climate articles published in three mainstream and two alternative media outlets in Northern Belgium. This article discusses the relations among four selected news values and the ideologically coloured subframes of the Cycles of Nature and Environmental Justice frames. The presented schemata and exemplary analyses demonstrate the strong overlap between the salience-enhancing devices of subframes and news values. Also, they make tangible the ideological argumentations at the intersection of newsworthiness and framing, explicating the diverging realizations of news values in the context of various subframes. As such, this study lays bare some of the journalistic conventions which are often used in climate reporting to naturalize certain worldviews. Abstract In this paper, we explore the gendered experiences of, and responses to, socio-economic and environmental change evoked by processes of land acquisition for oil palm plantation development. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, we examine the heterogeneous and differentiated nature of women's lived experiences in resisting, accepting and enacting agrarian change. We find that impacts stretch beyond livelihood opportunities, access to land and resources, and labour conditions: plantation development also affects and changes social relations, leading to insecurity and anxiety and new forms of solidarity. Using an analytical framework of 'spaces for participation' we highlight how women are excluded from participation during negotiations and contestations around land acquisition for the development of oil palm plantations. Yet, women also challenge their exclusion by claiming space for participation in different ways, including by engaging in alternative, more subtle forms of resistance that frequently go unnoticed by policies and practices that aim to empower women. In the face of globalization, more and more researchers have multicultural and multilocal backgrounds. This creates both challenges and possibilities. When combined with conducting research in a context in which people have experienced high levels of social marginalization, the intricacy of the research process increases. Much time, care and reflection are required to secure ethical conduct and the validity of the research and to facilitate results that are relevant for all those involved. The transformative paradigm and postcolonial indigenous research methodologies are theoretical frameworks that can guide this process. In this article, we describe some of our experiences while developing an ethnographic dissertation project in a marginalized urban school and its direct surroundings in El Salvador. It is written from two perspectives: Christine SCHMALENBACH writes from her perspective as a German researcher who grew up in Mexico and did research in El Salvador. Mechthild KIEGELMANN writes from the perspective of a mentor who oversaw the project from Germany and was pivotal in spurring and enriching processes of reflection. Close examination of the history of the concept of participant-observation reveals an interdisciplinary lineage that takes us back to 19th-century anthropologists. The result is a legacy of interdisciplinary roots with complex entanglements that underscore the theoretical importance of the interpersonal tradition in contemporary practice today. This paper explores the challenges and advantages in conducting biographical research based on life narratives of 140 Albanian migrants in three host societies, Greece, Switzerland and Germany. This methodological paper is written in the context of the research project investigating the experience of industrial citizenship (IC) of labour migrants coming from the Western Balkans (WB) to the European Union (EU). We reinforce our biographical accounts with semi-structured interviews, visual methods, participant observations, field notes and expert interviews which will provide context to the biographical interview texts. This paper shed light into challenges emerging in the framework of ethnography research field work, addressing the ethnographic issue trust building, hierarchic position, gender, ethical dilemmas, resistance and technical issues as well. In November 2013, the authors collaborated on a presentation called Tackling Rape Culture Requires a Team Effort. The central aim was to locate the problem where it should be located: on men, or more specifically, on the heteronormative, hypermasculine cultures of men that can breed rape culture attitudes and behaviours. In the few days prior to the presentation, the authors came to a critical point of divergence. One felt that it would be an oversight to not mention how some women contribute to and support rape culture, while the other felt that doing so would be seen as lecturing women and, thus, reinscribing patriarchy and sexism. Through their email exchange, they came to understand that their disagreement arose from positionality, specifically concerning sexuality identity. Their article addresses how positionality and privilege are key to tackling, and even talking about, rape culture on campuses. They explore the complications that they worked through as they planned for the presentation, and suggest strategies by which men who work against violence against women can address identity and positionality to enhance their activism on post-secondary campuses and in society. This article explores the positionalities of two traditionally mobile groups of people in Afghanistan, former pastoralists and peripatetics, who are currently living in several urban camps in Kabul. Starting from the assumption of their immobilization inbetween places, the research shows their current self-positioning in the process of seeking belonging can be traced in locality-generating practices. At the same time, both groups are subject to context-producing effects through external events and forces linked not only to government (non-)policies but also to the global war on terror and exposure to neoliberal capitalism. The incapacity of the state to meet camp dwellers' expectations to provide shelter and income opportunities exacerbates their social immobility, which is both a cause for and effect of forced spatial immobilization. In light of the tension between efforts to belong and the increasing cementation of the status quo, the locality-generating practices of camp residents in Kabul reveal ambivalence. Researchers creating knowledge about African-American culture use various methodologies, including field research. Field research is knowledge creation in the space and location of interest to the researchers and is not limited to either qualitative or quantitative research methods. In this article, we focus on our diverse field research experiences as members on a multi-disciplinary research team that utilized mixed methods to examine the various factors that affect fruit and vegetable consumption in two African-American communities. Interacting with participants at community events and at various data gathering sites became part of the experience of our fieldwork. Accounts of interactions and relationships such as these, however, are often missing in journal articles, particularly those reporting findings from quantitative studies. This article, therefore, focuses on the reflexive methodological reporting of ways in which each researcher's positionality may have affected the observed phenomenon, the data collection process, and the dynamics of participation in fieldwork. The authors' reflective statements show that the researchers were aware of their positionality before, during and after the research process. Positionality is a concept that has largely been individualized. In this paper, although we present our individual research experiences, we also had to consider our position as a group. As a multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural team, our group identity was complex. Those who were part of the African-American community or identified with a similar heritage acted as "insiders" (while simultaneously reflecting upon the ways in which they were "outsiders") and as cultural brokers, enabling us to respectfully gain access to willing participants.
