It is essential to control the heat generated in the cutting zone in order to ensure the workpiece quality after grinding. This article deals with an investigation in using graphite and hexagonal boron nitride as solid lubricants to reduce friction and thereby improve the surface integrity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The polymer-based solid lubricant coating wheels have been prepared. Grinding experiments have been conducted to study the effect of the graphite and hexagonal boron nitride lubricants on the grinding temperature and the surface quality of the workpiece while grinding Ti-6Al-4V. Results indicate that there is a considerable improvement in the performance of grinding Ti-6Al-4V using graphite and hexagonal boron nitride as solid lubricants in dry grinding in terms of grinding temperature and surface quality of the work piece. The indigenous polymer-based solid lubricant coatings are effective in dry grinding.

An investigation was undertaken to explore the grinding energy and removal mechanisms in grinding zirconia by using brazed diamond wheels. The grinding forces were measured and the morphological features of ground workpiece surfaces were examined. The results indicate that material removal mechanisms are dominated by the combined removal modes of brittle and ductile. The prevailing removal mechanism for the ground surface of zirconia changes from brittle to ductile when the maximum chip thickness change from large to small.

We developed some wheat-Th. intermediumtranslocation lines,Yw642, Yw443 and Yw243, etc., showing good BYDV resistance from L1by induced homoeologous pairing using CS ph mutant. Characterization ofthese wheat lines was carried out by GISH and RFLP analysis. The resultsof GISH showed that the lines, YWw42, Yw443 and Yw243, etc., arehomozygous wheat-Th. intermediumtranslocation lines, in which thechromosome segments of Th. intermediumwere transferred to thedistal end of a pair of wheat chromosomes. RFLP analysis indicated that thetranslocation chromosome of the wheat lines is T7DS · 7DL-7XL. Thebreakpoint of the translocation is located on the distal end of 7DL, betweenXpsr965 and Xpsr680 about 90–99 cm from the centromere. The BYDVgene is located on the distal end of 7XL around Xpsr680, Xpsr687 andXwg380. The RFLP markers of psr680, psr687 and wg380 werecosegregated with the BYDV resistance respectively and could be used formolecular assisted selection (MAS) in wheat breeding program for BYDVresistance.

Purpose: We investigate the roles and possible interactions of the retinoblastoma, transforming growth factor-beta 1 and c-myc genes in bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: The expression of these 3 genes was examined in 38 biopsy specimens of human bladder cancer by immunohistochemical analysis or Northern blotting. Results: Loss of the retinoblastoma protein expression was most significantly correlated with high grade cancer. Over expression of c-myc or expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 was less associated with tumor grade or stage, although c-myc over expression defined stage Ta against other stage tumors, since no stage Ta lesions had increased c-myc expression. Finally, loss of retinoblastoma gene function did not correlate with either c-myc or transforming growth factor-beta 1 expression. Conclusions: These results further support that retinoblastoma gene inactivation is an important factor in the progression of bladder cancer, and suggest that transforming growth factor-beta 1 and c-myc are not regulators or are not regulated by retinoblastoma gene expression.

The photokinetics of the fluorescence quenching of 9-methylanthracene by piperazines and subsequent exciplex formation have been investigated by fluorescence decay and steady-state techniques. It is believed that the exciplex formed involves only one amino group, while the second amino group in the piperazine ring can deactivate the exciplex via non-radiative processes. Rate constants for these processes have been calculated.

On the basis of improving the experimental technique, the authors have obtained a set of experimental curves by developing uniquely designed experiments. The temperature distribution and its variance characteristics in contact zone during entire creep feed grinding process can be fully explored. According to the newly discovered experimental results, it was confirmed that the heating state of continuously renewed grinding surface during film boiling of coolant in creep feed grinding is quite different from that of boiler tubes. There exists a gradually developing process from low surface temperature in normal condition to burning temperature in contact zone during creep feed grinding. Therefore the prediction of workpiece burn can be realized.

Tumor suppressor genes have been found to have loss of function in a number of malignancies. This loss of function is believed to contribute to malignant transformation or metastatic spread. In the present study, expression of the retinoblastoma (RB) tumor suppressor gene was examined in cell lines and tumor tissue obtained from primary renal and metastatic sites in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Three of fifteen (20 percent) of informative renal carcinoma cell lines had loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in the RB gene (intron 20) detected by polymerase chain reaction analysis. Using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis, 7 of 22 (32 percent) informative cell lines had LOH centromeric to the RB gene at the D13S1 locus. No LOH (0 of 7) was seen telomeric to the RB gene at the D13S2 locus. None of the 28 cell lines examined had decreased RB mRNA expression compared with short-term cultures of proximal renal tubular cells. Western blotting demonstrated phosphorylated and unphosphorylated forms of RB protein of expected molecular weight in all 41 cell lines (33 primary and 8 metastatic) examined. Twenty-nine primary cell lines and 6 metastatic cell lines all demonstrated normal immunohistochemical staining. Loss of RB immunohistochemical staining in paraffin-embedded tissue was detected in none of the primary tumors (0 of 30) or metastatic tumors (0 of 12). The absence of abnormalities of RB expression detected in these renal cell carcinomas suggests that abnormalities of the RB gene are not central to malignant transformation or progression in this tumor type; however, another tumor suppressor gene centromeric to the RB locus may be important in renal cell carcinogenesis.
