Exploiting conductive biobased polymer nanocomposites for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is a rapidly evolving research area. In this study, we systematically fine-tune the nano- and microstructural features of bacterial cellulose (BC) modified with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) for EMI shielding applications. First, to investigate the effect of nanostructure, PEDOT is incorporated into the BC matrix using two methods: chemical vapor polymerization (CVP) and in situpolymerization. The CVP method produces more uniform and denser BC-PEDOT nanocomposites, resulting in cryogels with higher electrical conductivity and total EMI shielding effectiveness (SET) (52 ± 2 S/m, 37 dB) compared to those of the in situpolymerized BC-PEDOT cryogels (7 ± 1.5 S/m, 27 dB). The cryogels’ microstructure is then adjusted to control the EMI shielding mechanisms by applying different drying methods: freeze-drying, air-drying, and hybrid freeze- and air-drying. Our results indicate that the more energy-efficient air-drying method enhances the reflection-dominant EMI shielding mechanism, with a slight increase in total shielding effectiveness. The drying conditions also affect the final mechanical properties of the samples. Overall, this study demonstrates that BC-PEDOT nanocomposites are excellent candidates for EMI shielding applications.

Charting future emissions pathways is a central tenet of IPCC assessment reports (AR), yet it is unclear how underlying drivers (including around policy and technology) have influenced the evolution of emissions pathways. Here we compare scenarios in AR5 and AR6 and find that scenarios without specific climate policies enforced have shifted lower in each scenario generation, owing to falling low-carbon technology costs and reduced expectations for economic growth, reducing fossil-fuel shares in energy and industry. Mitigation pathways consistent with 1.5–2 °C have seen increasing electrification rates and higher shares of variable renewables in electricity in more recent scenario generations, implying reduced reliance on coal, nuclear, bioenergy and carbon capture and storage, reflecting changing costs. Despite the shrinking carbon budget due to insufficient recent climate action, mitigation costs have not increased given more optimistic low-carbon technology cost projections. Moving forward, scenario producers must continually recalibrate to keep abreast of technology, policy and societal developments to remain policy relevant.

The response of breast cancer to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) varies substantially, even when tumours belong to the same molecular or histological subtype1. Here we identify the oestrous cycle as an important contributor to this heterogeneity. In three mouse models of breast cancer, we show reduced responses to NAC when treatment is initiated during the dioestrus stage, when compared with initiation during the oestrus stage. Similar findings were observed in retrospective premenopausal cohorts of human patients. Mechanistically, the dioestrus stage exhibits systemic and localized changes, including (1) an increased number of cells undergoing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition linked to chemoresistance2, 3–4and (2) decreased tumour vessel diameter, suggesting potential constraints to drug sensitivity and delivery. In addition, an elevated presence of macrophages, previously associated with chemoresistance induction5, characterizes the dioestrus phase. Whereas NAC disrupts the oestrous cycle, this elevated macrophage prevalence persists and depletion of macrophages mitigates the reduced therapy response observed when initiating treatment during dioestrus. Our data collectively demonstrate the oestrous cycle as a crucial infradian rhythm determining chemosensitivity, warranting future clinical studies to exploit optimal treatment initiation timing for enhanced chemotherapy outcomes.

Films commonly used in food packaging are often derived from petroleum-based plastics, which pose a threat to the environment due to them being nonbiodegradable and nonecological. Herein, we present an approach wherein robust and flexible cellulose-based films were continuously generated using a flow casting method, involving the extrusion of dope through a slit, followed by resolidification in acid. The extruded films were deposited on a conveyor belt submerged in an acid bath and capable of operating at speeds up to 7 cm/s. The morphological and physiochemical properties of films were assessed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, solid-state 13C NMR, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis revealed that carboxymethylated cellulose films regenerated at higher extrusion speeds exhibited a higher alignment in the orientation of cellulose crystals. The tensile stress of the film increased from 105 to 125 MPa as the speed of the conveyor belt increased from 0.8 to 7 cm/s. Notably, the tensile strength in the belt direction (BD) (125 MPa) is significantly higher (125 MPa) than the tensile stress in the cross direction (76 MPa). This difference confirms the anisotropic nature of the films, with cellulose chains preferentially aligning along the BD, as well as the specific crystallographic planes (11̅0) and (110).

In this paper, we provide a survey on automotive surround-view fisheye optics, with an emphasis on the impact of optical artifacts on computer vision tasks in autonomous driving and ADAS. The automotive industry has advanced in applying state-of-the-art computer vision to enhance road safety and provide automated driving functionality. When using camera systems on vehicles, there is a particular need for a wide field of view to capture the entire vehicle’s surroundings, in areas such as low-speed maneuvering, automated parking, and cocoon sensing. However, one crucial challenge in surround-view cameras is the strong optical aberrations of the fisheye camera, which is an area that has received little attention in the literature. Additionally, a comprehensive dataset is needed for testing safety-critical scenarios in vehicle automation. The industry has turned to simulation as a cost-effective strategy for creating synthetic datasets with surround-view camera imagery. We examine different simulation methods (such as model-driven and data-driven simulations) and discuss the simulators’ ability (or lack thereof) to model real-world optical performance. Overall, this paper highlights the optical aberrations in automotive fisheye datasets, and the limitations of optical reality in simulated fisheye datasets, with a focus on computer vision in surround-view optical systems.

Currently, real-world data on doravirine are scarce. In a national prospective cohort, we assessed the effectiveness and tolerability of switching to doravirine-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) in people with HIV.

Existing guidelines on the preparation (Planning Research and Experimental Procedures on Animals: Recommendations for Excellence (PREPARE)) and reporting (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE)) of animal experiments do not provide a clear and standardized approach for refinement during in vivo cancer studies, resulting in the publication of generic methodological sections that poorly reflect the attempts made at accurately monitoring different pathologies. Compliance with the 3Rs guidelines has mainly focused on reduction and replacement; however, refinement has been harder to implement. The Oncology Best-practices: Signs, Endpoints and Refinements for in Vivo Experiments (OBSERVE) guidelines are the result of a European initiative supported by EurOPDX and INFRAFRONTIER, and aim to facilitate the refinement of studies using in vivo cancer models by offering robust and practical recommendations on approaches to research scientists and animal care staff. We listed cancer-specific clinical signs as a reference point and from there developed sets of guidelines for a wide variety of rodent models, including genetically engineered models and patient derived xenografts. In this Consensus Statement, we systematically and comprehensively address refinement and monitoring approaches during the design and execution of murine cancer studies. We elaborate on the appropriate preparation of tumor-initiating biologicals and the refinement of tumor-implantation methods. We describe the clinical signs to monitor associated with tumor growth, the appropriate follow-up of animals tailored to varying clinical signs and humane endpoints, and an overview of severity assessment in relation to clinical signs, implantation method and tumor characteristics. The guidelines provide oncology researchers clear and robust guidance for the refinement of in vivo cancer models.

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the effects of innovation awards on subsequent innovation behaviors in organizations. Specifically, the authors investigate whether winning an external innovation award helps diffuse the award-winning innovations and develop additional innovation projects in the organization. Furthermore, the authors study the contextual influence of innovators’ organizational hierarchy on experiencing and using the winning consequence. Design/methodology/approach: The authors collected survey data from clinics and hospitals that participated in a state-level innovation award program sponsored by a large health-care insurer and provider in Midwestern states. The authors tested the hypotheses using ordinary least squares regressions and supplemented the method with a post hoc analysis using Fisher’s least significant difference test. Findings: The authors find that awards help a “bottom-up” innovation (i.e., an innovation initiated by a lower-level employee) disseminate at a larger scale due to award-bestowed legitimacy and reputation, whereas a “top-down” innovation (i.e., an innovation initiated by a top manager) does not experience the same benefit. On the other hand, the organizations that won the innovation award with a “top-down” innovation showed a higher number of additional innovation projects after winning, as manager–innovators experienced a boost in their confidence to engage in further innovation projects. Originality/value: This paper offers a unique and nuanced examination of how innovation awards influence organizational innovation. By bridging literatures on awards and innovation, the authors propose the mechanisms through which innovation awards confer legitimacy and reputation upon the award winners and their innovations. Furthermore, the authors add insights into the recent academic interests in employee-driven innovation by showing the different benefits of innovation awards depending on the innovators’ organizational hierarchies.

Black holes have been found over a wide range of masses, from stellar remnants with masses of 5–150 solar masses (M☉), to those found at the centres of galaxies with M> 105M☉. However, only a few debated candidate black holes exist between 150M☉and 105M☉. Determining the population of these intermediate-mass black holes is an important step towards understanding supermassive black hole formation in the early universe1,2. Several studies have claimed the detection of a central black hole in ω Centauri, the most massive globular cluster of the Milky Way3–5. However, these studies have been questioned because of the possible mass contribution of stellar mass black holes, their sensitivity to the cluster centre and the lack of fast-moving stars above the escape velocity6–9. Here we report the observations of seven fast-moving stars in the central 3 arcsec (0.08 pc) of ω Centauri. The velocities of the fast-moving stars are significantly higher than the expected central escape velocity of the star cluster, so their presence can be explained only by being bound to a massive black hole. From the velocities alone, we can infer a firm lower limit of the black hole mass of about 8,200M☉, making this a good case for an intermediate-mass black hole in the local universe.

IMPORTANCE: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is proposed as treatment for late local toxic effects after breast irradiation. Strong evidence of effectiveness is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To assess effectiveness of HBOT for late local toxic effects in women who received adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a hospital-based, pragmatic, 2-arm, randomized clinical trial nested within the prospective UMBRELLA cohort following the trials within cohorts design in the Netherlands. Participants included 189 women with patient-reported moderate or severe breast, chest wall, and/or shoulder pain in combination with mild, moderate, or severe edema, fibrosis, or movement restriction 12 months or longer after breast irradiation. Data analysis was performed from May to September 2023. INTERVENTION: Receipt of 30 to 40 HBOT sessions over a period of 6 to 8 consecutive weeks. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Breast, chest wall, and/or shoulder pain 6 months postrandomization measured by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-BR23 questionnaire. Secondary end points were patient-reported fibrosis, edema, movement restriction, and overall quality of life. Data were analyzed according to intention-to-treat (ITT) and complier average causal effect (CACE) principles. RESULTS: Between November 2019 and August 2022, 125 women (median [range] age at randomization, 56 [37-85] years) with late local toxic effects were offered to undergo HBOT (intervention arm), and 61 women (median [range] age at randomization, 60 [36-80] years) were randomized to the control arm. Of those offered HBOT, 31 (25%) accepted and completed treatment. The most common reason for not accepting HBOT was high treatment intensity. In ITT, moderate or severe pain at follow-up was reported by 58 of 115 women (50%) in the intervention arm and 32 of 52 women (62%) in the control arm (odds ratio [OR], 0.63; 95% CI, 0.32-1.23; P = .18). In CACE, the proportion of women reporting moderate or severe pain at follow-up was 32% (10 of 31) among those completing HBOT and 75% (9.7 of 12.9) among control participants expected to complete HBOT if offered (adjusted OR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.15-0.80; P = .01). In ITT, moderate or severe fibrosis was reported by 35 of 107 (33%) in the intervention arm and 25 of 49 (51%) in the control arm (OR, 0.36; 95% CI, 0.15-0.81; P = .02). There were no significant differences in breast edema, movement restriction, and quality of life between groups in ITT and CACE. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this randomized clinical trial, offering HBOT to women with late local toxic effects was not effective for reducing pain, but was effective for reducing fibrosis. In the subgroup of women who completed HBOT, a significant reduction in pain and fibrosis was observed. A smaller than anticipated proportion of women with late local toxic effects was prepared to undergo HBOT. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04193722

Purpose: Resection of pediatric osteosarcoma in the extremities with soft tissue involvement presents surgical challenges due to difficult visualization and palpation of the tumor. Therefore, an adequate image-guided surgery (IGS) system is required for more accurate tumor resection. The use of a 3D model in combination with intraoperative tracked ultrasound (iUS) may enhance surgical decision making. This study evaluates the clinical feasibility of iUS as a surgical tool using a porcine cadaver model. Methods: First, a 3D model of the porcine lower limb was created based on preoperative scans. Second, the bone surface of the tibia was automatically detected with an iUS by a sweep on the skin. The bone surface of the preoperative 3D model was then matched with the bone surface detected by the iUS. Ten artificial targets were used to calculate the target registration error (TRE). Intraoperative performance of iUS IGS was evaluated by six pediatric surgeons and two pediatric oncologic orthopedists. Finally, user experience was assessed with a post-procedural questionnaire. Results: Eight registration procedures were performed with a mean TRE of 6.78 ± 1.33 mm. The surgeons agreed about the willingness for clinical implementation in their current clinical practice. They mentioned the additional clinical value of iUS in combination with the 3D model for the localization of the soft tissue components of the tumor. The concept of the proposed IGS system is considered feasible by the clinical panel, but the large TRE and degree of automation need to be addressed in further work. Conclusion: The participating pediatric surgeons and orthopedists were convinced of the clinical value of the interaction between the iUS and the 3D model. Further research is required to improve the surgical accuracy and degree of automation of iUS-based registration systems for the surgical management of pediatric osteosarcoma.

Electrification of off-highway vehicles offers the benefits of improved energy efficiency, enhanced control, and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. However, progress towards electrification has been limited by the low torque density (30 $\text{kNm/m}^{3}$) of conventional electric machines compared to mobile hydraulic machines (up to approximately 1000 $\text{kNm/m}^{3}$). This article reviews emerging variants of electric machines that offer a step improvement in torque density and potential pathway to enable electrified off-highway vehicles. First, sizing approaches for electric and hydraulic machines are developed, and torque-dense electric machines reviewed in literature are compared to commercial hydraulic machines to identify design trends in terms of speed, torque density, and power density. Next, key metrics are identified for the electric machine, based on which the following four emerging electric machine variants that promise to improve torque density are reviewed: i) multi-harmonic machines injection, ii) combined radial-axial flux machines, iii) magnetic gears, and iv) magnetically-geared machines. The findings from this review show that these new electric machines can achieve upwards of 300% improvement in electric machine torque density, with several designs exceeding 100 $\text{kNm/m}^{3}$, making them worthy candidates for further research to bridge the torque density gap with hydraulic machines.

During brain development, neural progenitors expand through symmetric divisions before giving rise to differentiating cell types via asymmetric divisions. Transition between those modes varies among individual neural stem cells, resulting in clones of different sizes. Imaging-based lineage tracing allows for lineage analysis at high cellular resolution but systematic approaches to analyse clonal behaviour of entire tissues are currently lacking. Here we implement whole-tissue lineage tracing by genomic DNA barcoding in 3D human cerebral organoids, to show that individual stem cell clones produce progeny on a vastly variable scale. By using stochastic modelling we find that variable lineage sizes arise because a subpopulation of lineages retains symmetrically dividing cells. We show that lineage sizes can adjust to tissue demands after growth perturbation via chemical ablation or genetic restriction of a subset of cells in chimeric organoids. Our data suggest that adaptive plasticity of stem cell populations ensures robustness of development in human brain organoids.

Modeling immuno-oncology by using patient-derived material and immune cell co-cultures can advance our understanding of immune cell tumor targeting in a patient-specific manner, offering leads to improve cellular immunotherapy. However, fully exploiting these living cultures requires analysis of the dynamic cellular features modeled, for which protocols are currently limited. Here, we describe the application of BEHAV3D, a platform that implements multi-color live 3D imaging and computational tools for: (i) analyzing tumor death dynamics at both single-organoid or cell and population levels, (ii) classifying T cell behavior and (iii) producing data-informed 3D images and videos for visual inspection and further insight into obtained results. Together, this enables a refined assessment of how solid and liquid tumors respond to cellular immunotherapy, critically capturing both inter- and intratumoral heterogeneity in treatment response. In addition, BEHAV3D uncovers T cell behavior involved in tumor targeting, offering insight into their mode of action. Our pipeline thereby has strong implications for comparing, prioritizing and improving immunotherapy products by highlighting the behavioral differences between individual tumor donors, distinct T cell therapy concepts or subpopulations. The protocol describes critical wet lab steps, including co-culture preparations and fast 3D imaging with live cell dyes, a segmentation-based image processing tool to track individual organoids, tumor and immune cells and an analytical pipeline for behavioral profiling. This 1-week protocol, accessible to users with basic cell culture, imaging and programming expertise, can easily be adapted to any type of co-culture to visualize and exploit cell behavior, having far-reaching implications for the immuno-oncology field and beyond.

Scalable solutions to treat depression in older adults in low-resourced settings are urgently needed. The PRODIGITAL-D pragmatic, single-blind, two-arm, individually randomized controlled trial assessed the effectiveness of a mobile messaging psychosocial intervention in improving depressive symptomatology among older adults in socioeconomically deprived areas of Guarulhos, Brazil. Older adults (aged 60+ years) registered with 24 primary care clinics and identified with depressive symptomatology (9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scores ≥ 10) received the 6-week Viva Vida intervention based on psychoeducation and behavioral activation (n= 298) or a single message (n= 305). No health professional support was offered. The primary outcome was improvement from depressive symptomatology (PHQ-9 < 10) at 3 months. Of the 603 participants enrolled (mean age = 65.1 years; 451 (74.8%) women), 527 (87.4%) completed the follow-up assessment. In the intervention arm, 109 of 257 (42.4%) participants had an improved depressive symptomatology, compared with 87 of 270 (32.2%) participants in the control arm (adjusted odds ratio = 1.57; 95% confidence interval = 1.07–2.29; P= 0.019). No severe adverse events related to trial participation were observed. These results demonstrate the usefulness of a digital messaging psychosocial intervention in the short-term improvement from depressive symptomatology that can potentially be integrated into primary care programs for treating older adults with depression. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of hospitalisation in infants. The burden of RSV infection in healthy term infants has not yet been established. Accurate health-care burden data in healthy infants are necessary to determine RSV immunisation policy when RSV immunisation becomes available.

The European Union (EU) recently ratcheted its climate ambition to net-zero emissions by 2050, with a milestone of 55% emissions cuts in 2030. This study carries out a model inter-comparison to assess the EU’s path, from “Fit for 55” in 2030 to an intermediate milestone in 2040 and onto net zero in 2050, offering insights at sectoral and member-state levels. Our model results support the bloc’s ambition for its Emissions Trading System and Effort Sharing Regulation sectors while pointing to the need for near-complete decarbonization of electricity by 2040, enabled by considerable deployment of renewables (45%–65% in 2030, to 60%–70% in 2040, and to 75%–90% in 2050 in electricity generation) and carbon capture and storage (0.5–2 GtCO2/year by 2050). We also highlight the trade-offs between supply-side and harder-to-abate sectors, assess the ambition of member states for net zero and timing of coal phaseout, and reflect on the economic implications of investment, technical, and policy needs.

The validated Amsterdam-Brisbane-Sydney nomogram performs superior to the Briganti-2017 and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center nomograms, and similar to the Briganti-2019 nomogram. Furthermore, it is applicable in all patients with newly diagnosed unfavorable intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer.

ABSTRACTReplicas have the ability to communicate artistic, cultural and intellectual values outside their original context. They do this by physically establishing a canon for ordering and interpreting history. Epigraphical squeezes, as fragmentary impressions of sculpted or incised surfaces, are one example of such replicas, occupying a transitory space between source and copy. However, they are rarely studied within this framework, instead seen primarily as an aide for publication. To better understand how squeezes are implicated in our own processes of knowledge formation, this paper focuses on a single case study, the collection of early Christian squeezes held at Musée L. In mapping the biography of this collection, tracing its connection to the emergence of archaeology as a science based on interaction with material remains at the turn of the twentieth century, this case study will provide a rich model for how squeezes can act as sources for historiographical inquiry.

The COP26 Glasgow process resulted in many countries strengthening their 2030 emissions reduction targets and announcing net-zero pledges for 2050–2070 but it is not clear how this would impact future warming. Here, we use four diverse integrated assessment models (IAMs) to assess CO2emission trajectories in the near- and long-term on the basis of national policies and pledges, combined with a non-CO2infilling model and a simple climate model to assess the temperature implications. We also consider the feasibility of national long-term pledges towards net-zero. While near-term pledges alone lead to warming above 2 °C, the addition of long-term pledges leads to emissions trajectories compatible with a future well below 2 °C, across all four IAMs. However, while IAM heterogeneity translates to diverse decarbonization pathways towards long-term targets, all modelled pathways indicate several feasibility concerns, relating to the cost of mitigation and the rates and scales of deployed technologies and measures.

Thin film coatings are widely applicable in materials for consumer products, electronics, optical coatings, and even biomedical applications. Wet coating can be an effective method to obtain thin films of functional materials, and this technique has recently been studied in depth for the formation of bioinspired polyphenolic films. Naturally occurring polyphenols such as tannic acid (TA) have garnered interest due to their roles in biological processes and their applicability as antioxidants, antibacterial agents, and corrosion inhibitors. Understanding the adsorption of polyphenols to surfaces is a core aspect in the fabrication processes of thin films of these materials. In this work, the adsorption of TA to gold surfaces is measured using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCMD) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for a wide range of TA concentrations. The adsorption kinetics, aggregation, and stability of TA solutions in physiological-like conditions are studied. Unexpectedly, it is found that the adsorption rates depend only weakly on concentration because of the presence of TA aggregates that do not adsorb. The mechanism of layer formation is also investigated, finding that TA monolayers readily adsorb onto gold with flat or edge-on molecular orientations dependent on the solution concentration. A mix of orientations in the intermediate case leads to slow multilayer adsorption.

In rural sub-Saharan Africa, where malnutrition in all its forms is rife, the greatest gap between the availability of foods and the foods needed for a nutritious diet are faced during the ‘hunger season’. We investigated what rural households in Northern Ghana would need to grow to ensure year-round availability of a nutrient adequate diet or the income required to fulfil their dietary needs. We applied linear programming to model different scenarios and interventions. Our results provide three major insights. First, considering seasonality is crucial in nutrition-sensitive farming. Ensuring a nutritious diet year-round requires enhanced availability of vegetables and fruits throughout the year. Second, although staple crops do not provide the full range of essential nutrients, increasing their yields allows for a reduction of field size, freeing up space for the production of other foods belonging to a nutritious diet, such as vegetables. Third, small farms are unable to produce sufficient food to cover their needs. They depend on income both from agriculture and other sources, and the availability of types of foods on markets to meet their dietary needs. Our study shows the value of modelling the range of dietary effects from agricultural interventions in a specific context, using a local feasible nutritious diet as a starting point and taking seasonality into account.

A third of patients with colorectal cancer who are eligible for surgery in high-income countries have concomitant anaemia associated with adverse outcomes. We aimed to compare the efficacy of preoperative intravenous and oral iron supplementation in patients with colorectal cancer and iron deficiency anaemia.

BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate among unemployed persons (1) the impact of having a chronic disease on entering paid employment and obtaining a permanent contract and (2) whether these associations differed by educational attainment.MethodsRegister data from Statistics Netherlands on employment status, contract type, medication and sociodemographic characteristics were linked. Dutch unemployed persons between 18 and 64 years (n=667 002) were followed up for 10 years (2011–2020). Restricted mean survival time analyses (RMSTs) were used to investigate differences in average months until entering paid employment and until obtaining a permanent contract between persons with and without cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory conditions, diabetes, respiratory illness, common mental disorders and psychotic disorders. Interaction terms were included for education.ResultsOne-third of the unemployed persons at baseline entered paid employment during follow-up. Persons with chronic diseases spent more months in non-employment compared with persons without chronic diseases (difference ranging from 2.50 months (95% CI 1.97 to 3.03 months) to 10.37 months (95% CI 9.98 to 10.77 months)), especially for persons with higher education. Conditional on entering paid employment, the time until a permanent contract was longer for persons with cardiovascular diseases (4.42 months, 95% CI 1.85 to 6.99 months), inflammatory conditions (4.80 months, 95% CI 2.02 to 7.59 months) and diabetes (8.32 months, 95% CI 4.26 to 12.37 months) than for persons without these diseases. These latter differences were similar across educational attainment.ConclusionsHaving a chronic disease is a barrier to entering permanent paid employment. The findings underline the need to prevent chronic diseases and promote an inclusive workforce.
