- Abstract
Our aim was to assess the efficacy of adjuvant programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitors and compare the other adjuvant treatments in patients with surgically resected stage III or IV acral melanoma. This study is a multicenter, retrospective analysis. We included 114 patients with stage III or IV acral malignant melanoma who underwent surgery within the past 10 years. We analyzed the effect of adjuvant programmed cell death protein-1 inhibitors on disease-free survival (DFS). The mean follow-up was 40 months, during which 69 (59.5%) patients experienced recurrence. Among the participants, 64 (56.1%) received systemic adjuvant therapy. Specifically, 48.4% received anti–PD-1 therapy, 29.7% received interferon, 14.1% received tezozolomide, and 7.8% received B-Raf proto-oncogene/mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitors. Patients who received adjuvant therapy had a median DFS of 24 (10.9–37.2) months, whereas those who did not receive adjuvant therapy had a median DFS of 15 (9.8–20.2) months. Multivariate analysis for DFS revealed that the receipt of adjuvant therapy and lymph node metastasis stage were independent significant parameters (P= 0.021, P= 0.018, respectively). No statistically significant difference was observed for DFS between programmed cell death protein-1 inhibitor treatment and other adjuvant treatments. Regarding overall survival (OS), patients who received adjuvant treatment had a median OS of 71 (30.4–111.7) months, whereas those who did not receive adjuvant treatment had a median OS of 38 (16.7–59.3; P= 0.023) months. In addition, there were no significant differences in OS observed between various adjuvant treatment agents (P= 0.122). In our study, we have shown that adjuvant therapy had a positive effect on both DFS and OS in patients with stages III–IV acral melanoma who underwent curative intent surgery. Notably, we found no significant differences between anti–PD-1 therapy and other adjuvant therapies.

- Abstract
Introduction: Lipodystrophy is a rare disease characterized by the loss of adipose tissue. Visceral adipose tissue loss in certain forms of lipodystrophy may affect the amount of mesenteric fat. Method: We studied visceral adipose tissue by measuring the thickness of mesenteric and retroperitoneal adipose tissue and the aortomesenteric (AOM) distance in patients with genetic forms of lipodystrophy (n= 48; 7 males; 41 females; mean age 39.1 ± 11.9 years; 19 with congenital generalized lipodystrophy [CGL], and 29 with familial partial lipodystrophy [FPLD]). An age- and gender-matched control group with a ratio of 1:2 was generated. Results: Patients with CGL had severely depleted mesenteric adipose tissue (2.0 [IQR: 1.5–3.5] mm vs. 18.8 [IQR: 4.4–42.2] mm in FPLD, P< .001; 30.3 [IQR: 13.9–46.6] mm in controls, P< .001) and retroperitoneal adipose tissue (1.3 [IQR: 0.0–5.3] mm vs. 33.7 [IQR: 21.6–42.1] mm in FPLD, P< .001; 29.7 [IQR: 23.1–36.7] mm in controls, P< .001). The AOM distance was shorter in patients with CGL (8.1 [IQR: 6.0–10.8] mm) compared to patients with FPLD (vs. 13.0 [IQR: 8.8–18.1] mm; P= .023) and controls (vs. 11.3 [IQR: 8.4–15.5] mm, P= .016). Leptin levels were positively correlated with AOM distance in lipodystrophy (r= .513, P< .001). Multivariate linear regression analysis identified body mass index as a significant predictor of AOM distance (data controlled for age and sex; beta = 0.537, 95% CI: 0.277–0.798, P< .001). Twelve of 19 patients (63%) with CGL had an AOM distance of < 10 mm, a risk factor that may predispose patients to developing superior mesenteric artery syndrome. Conclusion: CGL is associated with a severe loss of mesenteric adipose tissue, which leads to a narrowing of the space between the superior mesenteric artery and the aorta.

- Abstract
Remote monitoring systems offer significant advantages in assessing cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary health, facilitating early diagnosis and enabling personalized treatment plans. In this article, we present a novel wearable patch, PhysioPatch, which could facilitate comprehensive monitoring of cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary functions by simultaneously capturing various physiological signals, including electrocardiogram (ECG), seismocardiogram (SCG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), and body temperature. The design comprises a main body intended for placement on the mid-sternum and a detachable daughter body, enabling distal measurements to enhance comprehensive assessment. While the main body includes the sensors for measuring the body temperature, ECG, proximal PPG and SCG signals, and other electronics such as the microcontroller, the battery, the battery management system (BMS), the Bluetooth, and the microSD card; the daughter body houses the sensors for distal pulse vibration and PPG signal acquisition. Along with the system design, the algorithms to derive various hemodynamic parameters (heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV), respiration rate, and oxygen saturation) are also presented. The system was validated with a human subject study including 20 participants, and the results have revealed that the PhysioPatch is capable of achieving high-quality signals, resulting in accurate derivation of hemodynamic parameters. Overall, such a system could potentially offer continuous health monitoring outside clinical settings, regardless of time and environmental stressors.

- Abstract
Accurate quantification of microsleep (MS) in drivers is crucial for preventing real-time accidents. We propose one-to-one correlation between events of high-fidelity driving simulator (DS) and corresponding brain patterns, unlike previous studies focusing general impact of MS on driving performance. Fifty professional drivers with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) participated in a 50-minute driving simulation, wearing six-channel Electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes. 970 out-of-road OOR (microsleep) events (wheel and boundary contact ≥1 s), and 1020 on-road OR (wakefulness) events (wheel and boundary disconnection ≥1 s), were recorded. Power spectrum density, computed using discrete wavelet transform, analyzed power in different frequency bands and theta/alpha ratios were calculated for each event. We classified OOR (microsleep) events with higher theta/alpha ratio compared to neighboring OR (wakefulness) episodes as true MS and those with lower ratio as false MS. Comparative analysis, focusing on frontal brain, matched 791 of 970 OOR (microsleep) events with true MS episodes, outperforming other brain regions, and suggested that some unmatched instances were due to driving performance, not sleepiness. Combining frontal channels F3 and F4 yielded increased sensitivity in detecting MS, achieving 83.7% combined mean identification rate (CMIR), surpassing individual channel's MIR, highlighting potential for further improvement with additional frontal channels. We quantified MS duration, with 95% of total episodes lasting between 1 to 15 seconds, and pioneered a robust correlation (r = 0.8913, p<0.001) between maximum drowsiness level and MS density. Validating simulator's signals with EEG patterns by establishing a direct correlation improves reliability of MS identification for assessing fitness-to-drive of OSA-afflicted adults.

- Abstract
Greulich-Pyle (GP) is one of the most used method for bone age determination (BAD) in various orthopedic, pediatric, radiological, and forensic situations. We aimed to investigate the inter- and intra-observer reliability of the GP method between the most relevant disciplines and its applicability to the Turkish population. One-hundred and eighty (90 boys, 90 girls) patients with a chronological age younger than 18 (mean 9.33) were included. X-rays mixed by the blinded investigator were evaluated by two orthopedists, two radiologists, and two pediatric endocrinologists to determine skeletal age according to the GP atlas. A month later the process was repeated. As a statistical method, Paired t-test was used for comparison, an Intraclass Correlation Coefficients test was used for reliability and a 95 % confidence interval was determined. Results were classified according to Landis-Koch. All results were consistent with chronological age (p<0.001), according to the investigators' evaluations compared with chronological age. At the initial evaluation, the interobserver reliability of the method was 0.999 (excellent); at the second evaluation, the interobserver reliability was 0.997 (excellent). The intra-observer reliability of the method was 'excellent' in all observers. When results were separately evaluated by gender, excellent intraobserver correlation and excellent correlation with chronological age were found among all researchers (>0.9). When X-rays were divided into three groups based on age ranges and evaluated, 'moderate' and 'good' correlations with chronological age were obtained during the peripubertal period. The GP method used in skeletal age determination has excellent inter- and intra-observer reliability. During the peripubertal period, potential discrepancies in bone age assessments should be kept in mind. This method can be used safely and reproducibly by the relevant specialists. This study aimed to investigate how pre-service teachers' intentions to vaccinate against COVID-19 were related to their perceptions of the causes of COVID-19, which are conspiracy thoughts, perceptions of environmental and faith factors, trust in scientists, and risk perceptions toward COVID-19 vaccines. In this study, a cross-sectional survey research method was used and an online questionnaire was administered to 434 Turkish pre-service teachers from 19 different universities in Türkiye. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to predict pre-service teachers' vaccination intentions and two multinomial logit models were evaluated. The results indicated that most pre-service teachers had a positive intention to vaccinate against COVID-19. Pre-service teachers with lower risk perceptions about COVID-19 vaccination and scores on conspiracy thoughts, and higher scores on perceptions of environmental factors about COVID-19 vaccination were more likely to have a positive intention of getting COVID-19 vaccination. However, trust in scientists and faith did not have significant relationships with the intention of getting COVID-19 vaccination. Based on our findings we suggest paying attention to increasing environmental perceptions of pre-service teachers, decreasing their beliefs in conspiracy theories and risk perceptions, and increasing trust in scientists, which are believed to contribute to the development of teacher education programs that would more likely equip teacher candidates with features necessary for dealing with global challenges in the world. - Abstract
AbstractThaumetopoea wilkinsoniTams. is the most important pine defoliator in the Mediterranean Basin and can cause serious growth losses on trees. At this point, the purpose of this study was to investigate the larvicidal effects of eight plant essential oils as biological control agents for the pine processionary moth. For this purpose, Artemisia vulgarisL., Juniperus drupaceaLabill., Melissa officinalisL., Ocimum basilicumL., Origanum majoranaL., Rosmarinus officinalisL., Sideritis leptocladaO. Schwarz & P.H. Davis and Vitex agnus-castusL. essential oils were tested on the fourth/fifth larval periods of T. wilkinsoni. The essential oils from the eight plants were obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC/MS. The most abundant compounds from each studied species were as follows: 1,8-cineole (20.68%) for R. officinalis, β-pinene (26.73%) for S. leptoclada, linalool (38.67%) for O. majorana, p-mentha-1,5-dien-8-ol (36.44%) for M. officinalis, eugenol acetate (38.78%) for O. basilicum, 1,8-cineole (22.10%) for V. agnus-castus, d-limonene (45.21%) for J. drupaceaand trans-β-caryophyllene (21.22%) for A. vulgaris. The results show that all eight essential oils exhibited promising efficacy in a dose-dependent manner on T. wilkinsonilarvae after 24 hours. The highest larvicidal effect was obtained from J. drupacea, followed by O. basilicum, with LC50values of 73.55 and 95.04 ppm, respectively. The data obtained from this study clearly indicate that J. drupaceaand O. basilicumessential oils have the potential to have larvicidal effects and these findings point to the possibility of using the essential oil of the current species to control T. wilkinsoni.

- Abstract
Objective: The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disorders can highly benefit from physical activity and energy expenditure assessment. In this study, we investigated the relationship between metabolic equivalent of task (MET) scores and seismocardiogram (SCG)-derived parameters. Methods: We worked with the PAMAP2 dataset and focused on the 3-axial chest acceleration data. We first segmented the 3-axial SCG signals into respiration (0–1 Hz), cardiac vibrations (1–20 Hz) and heart sounds (20–40 Hz) components. Additionally, we investigated their combinations: 0–20 Hz, 1–40 Hz and 0–40 Hz. We then windowed each signal, and extracted time and frequency domain features from each window. Using the MET scores and activity types, we trained linear regression and random forest classification models first using 80–20% split, then with leave-one-subject-out cross-validation (LOSO-CV). Additionally, we investigated the significance of each feature and axis. Results: For the 80–20% task, the best performing frequency bands were 0–1 Hz, 0–20 Hz, and 0–40 Hz, which yielded a (MET mean-squared-error, classification accuracy) pair of (0.354, 0.952), (0.367, 0.904), and (0.377, 0.914), respectively. When LOSO-CV was applied, we obtained (1.059, 0.865), (0.681, 0.868), and (0.804, 0.875) for each band, respectively. Additionally, our results revealed that the lateral axis provides the most critical information about cardiorespiratory effect of performed activities. Conclusion: Different SCG components can provide unique and substantial contributions to activity and energy expenditure assessment. Significance: This framework can be leveraged in the design of wearable systems for monitoring the activity and energy expenditure levels, and understanding their relationship with underlying cardiorespiratory parameters.

- Abstract
Familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia (FDH) is an autosomal dominant condition caused by heterozygous gain-of-function mutations in the human ALB gene. We report, a three-year-old boy with FDH due to p.R242P (or p.R218P without signal peptide) mutation in the ALB gene with a phenotype characterized by extremely high serum total and free thyroxine concentrations. His parents had normal thyroid function tests (TFT), so the mutation detected in this patient is assumed "de novo". Although the most frequent variant was p.R242H in Caucasians and p.R242P in Japanese, our patient had p.R242P variant. Early identification of FDH is fundamental to prevent unnecessary repeats of TFT with different methods. We encourage the ALB gene hot spot sequencing initially and indicate that this molecular diagnosis is a rapid and simple method to diagnose FDH in individuals with euthyroid hyperthyroxinemia. - Abstract
This trial aims to assess the acceptability, feasibility, and safety of BioVirtualPed, a biofeedback-based virtual reality (VR) game designed to reduce pain, anxiety, and fear in children undergoing medical procedures. An Oculus Quest 2 headset was used in the VR experience, respiratory data was captured using an ADXL354 accelerometer, and these data were integrated into the game with ArdunioUno software. The sample of this study consisted of 15 pediatric oncology patients aged 6 to 12 years between July and August 2023. BioVirtualPed's acceptability, feasibility, and safety were evaluated through child and expert feedback, alongside metrics including the System Usability Scale, Wong-Baker Pain Rating Scale, Child Fear Scale, Child Anxiety Scale-Status, Satisfaction Scoring, and various feasibility and safety parameters. Regarding the acceptability, the expert evaluation showed a mean score of 122.5 ± 3.53, indicating high usability for the system. All children provided positive feedback, and both children and their mothers reported high satisfaction with using BioVirtualPed. The BioVirtualPed was feasible for reducing children's pain, fear, and anxiety levels. All the children complied with the game, and no one withdrew from the trial. BioVirtualPed did not cause symptoms of dizziness, vomiting, or nausea in children and was found to be safe for children. The findings showed that BioVirtualPed meets the following criteria: feasibility, user satisfaction, acceptability, and safety. It is a valuable tool to improve children's experience undergoing port catheter needle insertion procedures. Integration of VR interventions with BioVirtualPed into routine nursing care practices has the potential to effectively manage the pain, anxiety, and fear experienced by children undergoing medical procedures. The safety, feasibility, and acceptability results are promising for further research and integration into pediatric healthcare practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The tourism sector has a vital role in the Turkish economy, where around 8% of total employment and 4% of GDP are generated owing to tourism. According to TurkStat data, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, total tourism demand in Turkey contracted by 60% between 2018 and 2020. Using the Input-Output (IO) methodology, this study investigates the country-level and sectoral effects of this tourism demand contraction on the Turkish economy. The idea is that various sectors provide inputs to tourism, and the outputs of the tourism sector are used as inputs by other sectors. By focusing on the hospitality industry, i.e., the accommodation and food services(AF) component of tourism, changes in Turkey's overall and sectoral output, value added, and employment are analysed. The results reveal that food processing and agriculture are the most affected sectors, whereas the least affected ones are health services, education services, and the automotive industry.

- Abstract
AbstractThis paper considers the perceptions and teaching practices of Turkish pre-service early childhood education teachers with regard to nature-based teaching. Nature-based activities rarely take place in Turkish early childhood education settings; accordingly, there is a clear need to develop pre-service teachers’ professional experience related to nature-based teaching to empower them to support children’s learning in natural environments. In this study, eight pre-service teachers applied nature-based teaching in a professional experience placement over a period of 10 weeks. Clarke and Peterson’s (1986) model of teachers’ thoughts and actions guided this study in terms of understanding pre-service teachers’ related perceptions and practices. Qualitative data were collected through activity plans and semi-structured interviews, the findings from which revealed that the implementation of various activities using natural materials and the natural environment increased pre-service teachers’ self-confidence related to nature-based teaching. The primary barriers to the implementation of nature-based teaching activities were reported as being the attitudes of families and school management, weather conditions and pre-service teachers’ lack of knowledge of nature-based pedagogies. These barriers could be addressed by supporting pre-service early childhood teachers’ professional development and by affording them more opportunities to perform nature-related activities in early childhood settings.

Starting from theoretical perspectives, existing conceptualizations and empirical studies on effects of cooperative learning, we analyse didactic values of cooperative learning in terms of class teaching. It is obvious that didactic values of cooperative learning are almost always analysed from the perspective of the teaching practice, neglecting the attitudes of students - future agents of teaching. With this study, we attempted to find out how future class-teachers' perceive didactic values of cooperative teaching in achieving socio-affective and cognitive objectives of class teaching, and to what extent their gender and year of study influence their perception of the didicatic values of cooperative learning. The study included 394 students of faculties of education in Serbia (Uzice, Jagodina and Vranje). The results show that students, future class-teachers have positive attitudes toward didactic values of cooperative learning in terms of achieving socio-affective and cognitive objectives of teaching. We established significant differences in future class-teachers' attitudes, in relation to their gender and the year of study. In the context of the results obtained, we derived pedagogical implications and implications for future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Höyük Settlement is located within the boundary of Çal district of Denizli Province. It was strategically located on a natural passage and an important centre surrounded by walls during the 2nd millennium BC. Surveys conducted in the Upper Menderes Basin have revealed that the mountainous and plateau areas are at least as densely settled as in lowland sections and these areas have significant importance in archaeological point of view. An intensive archaeological survey was conducted in order to find answers on Höyük settlements. Therefore, The Middle and Late Bronze Age ceramics which were found in the settlement area were evaluated from archaeological and archaeometric perspective. These ceramics were characterized by using typological evaluations, optical microscopy and X-Ray Fluorescence analyses (XRF). Analogical evaluations shown that the settlement's interregional relations reach from Central Anatolian to the West Anatolian shores, but the local features known from Beycesultan are prominent. Archaeometric analyses revealed that the Middle and Late Bronze Age ceramics contain metamorphic rock fragments and very abundant carbonate. Small and fine quartz grains, a small amount of pyroxene and plagioclase minerals and abundant carbonate are observed in these samples. The results obtained from the intensive survey supported the idea that the importance of the settlements in the mountainous and plateau areas increased after the decline seen in the region in 16th century BC. - Abstract
80% of individuals with cancer will require a surgical procedure, yet little comparative data exist on early outcomes in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared postoperative outcomes in breast, colorectal, and gastric cancer surgery in hospitals worldwide, focusing on the effect of disease stage and complications on postoperative mortality.

Species of the Salvia genus are aromatic herbs and traditionally used for many medicinal purposes in Anatolia. The genus has produced an extraordinarily large number of beneficial secondary metabolites belonging to numerous chemical groups. Salvia pisidica is an endemic plant of southwest Anatolia, the dried parts of which are used as herbal tea and local materia medica. The composition of endemic S. pisidica essential oil was determined through GC-MS studies. In vitro cytotoxicity activity and apoptosis analysis were investigated by MTT assay, q-PCR and Annexin V staining experiments. Our results showed that 1,8 cineole (19.15 %) camphor (18.12 %) and γ-gurjunene (8.58 %) were the major constituents of the essential oil. It showed cytotoxic effects on the human breast cancer MCF-7, colon carcinoma Caco-2, hepatocyte carcinoma HepG2, and prostate carcinoma LnCap. The results of q-PCR and image-cytometer analysis showed that the essential oil caused induction of apoptosis by intrinsic and extrinsic pathways in all cancer cell lines. S. pisidica essential oil demonstrates considerable cytotoxic activity due to an apoptosis-related mechanism, suggesting that their bioactive components could be used as natural anticancer substances. [Display omitted] • Salvia pisidica esssential oil was cytotoxic and apoptotic in MCF-7, Caco-2, HepG2 and LnCap cells. • S. pisidica essential oil induced apoptosis via intrinsic pathway. • The esssential oil content was found different than previous studies. • The essential oil contains 1,8 cineole, camphor and γ-gurjunene as a major components. - Abstract
Introduction: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a polymer, is in demand due to its usage in different applications such as pharmaceutical, biomedical and textile, paper, food industries. Methods: A new sensitive reversed phased high-pressure liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method with refractive index detector (RID) was developed for determination of PVA in an ophthalmic solution containing dexpanthenol and PVA as active substances and it was validated according to The International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) guideline. Results: Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Chiral-AGP (150 mm × 4.0 mm, 5 μm) column kept at 30°C with an isocratic flow at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The detector temperature was 30°C, the retention time of PVA was around 1.0 min and the total run time was 5 minutes. Conclusion: The proposed method showed linearity, accuracy, precision, specificity, robustness, solution stability, and system suitability results within the acceptance criteria.

- Abstract
Background: Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that may affect different joints. Sarcoidosis is a Th-1 cell-related chronic granulomatous disease characterized by non-caseating granuloma formation. The coexistence of both the diseases is a rare entity. Ustekinumab, an IL12 / 23 inhibitor, has shown efficacy and safety in the treatment of PsA. Objective: This study presents a case with ustekinumab-induced sarcoidosis in a patient with PsA. Case Report: A 52 years old female patient with complaints of pain and swelling of the wrists, MCP, PIP and DIP joints and skin lesions was referred to our Rheumatology clinic. On her medical history, she had been under follow up for 5 years with the diagnosis of psoriasis and one year ago, she started to receive ustekinumab prescribed by a dermatologist. On physical examination, she had psoriasis skin lesions and arthritis of both wrists, MCP, PIP, DIP joints. Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathies were detected in the chest X-ray and thorax computed tomography. In laboratory tests, acute phase reactants and serum angiotensin-converting enzyme levels were high. Endobronchial ultrasonography biopsy was performed and non-caseating granuloma consistent with sarcoidosis was reported. Ustekinumab was discontinued, methotrexate and low-dose corticosteroid were started. The patient was clinically stable in the 6th month of the treatment and the findings were regressed. Conclusion: Sarcoidosis development appears to be a new paradoxical effect of ustekinumab therapy, being another biological agent.

- Abstract
In this study, platinum catalysts were prepared from cosputtered platinum-aluminum alloys by dealloying method and utilized in hydrogen generation from ammonia borane. Aluminum was selectively removed from the alloy by sodium hydroxide. The resultant platinum particles obtained after dealloying was found to have nanoporous structure. The effect of Al sputtering power on hydrogen generation performance of particles was evaluated. The catalysts were characterized by SEM, TEM, and Zeta-Sizer. The maximum hydrogen generation rate of the catalysts was measured as 82.8 (± 2.2) L H2min−1g−1catalyst. The effect of catalyst amount was also evaluated. The activation energy of the reaction was calculated as 20.4 (± 0.8) kJ mol−1. Furthermore, the catalysts could preserve their catalytic activity upon consecutive runs with effective washing steps.

- Abstract
AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate how children express human–nature interactions after a folk storytelling session. In order to accomplish this task, a Turkish folk story was told to thirteen five-year-old Turkish preschool children. Subsequently, the children were asked to retell the story and semi-structured interviews related to the story were conducted with each of them. Findings revealed that folk stories like the Nasreddin Hodja story in this study could be a useful means for children to understand interconnections in nature and be respectful and feel empathy towards living things in nature. Teachers and educators should design more environmental storytelling activities for children.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare schizophrenia patients with and without Deficit Syndrome (DS) with respect to alexithymia, depression and negative symptoms and to investigate the relationship between these variables. Method: A total of 210 schizophrenia patients who joined the study were grouped on the basis of the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome (SDS). Each patient was evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) and the UKU - Side Effect Rating Scale (UKU-SERS). Results: The DS group had higher alexithymia scores that were not related to the negative symptoms. The prevalence of depression was significantly lower in the same group. Positive symptoms in the DS group were negatively correlated with the two TAS subscales of difficulty describing and identifying feelings. The negative symptoms scores of all the patients with and without DS correlated positively with the mean score on the TAS subscales. The severity of depressive and the negative symptoms predicted alexithymic symptoms. Conclusion: Lack of a correlation between the negative symptoms and alexithymic symptoms in DS suggested that the respective symptoms represented different independent phenomena in schizophrenia. A future study might explore the relationship between alexithymia and negative symptoms in association with cognitive functioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni Tams. is one of the most widespread pest found in the pine forest of Turkey. The objective of this study was to determine larvicidal effects of essential oil obtained from Pinus brutia Ten. on the third and fourth instar larvae of T. wilkinsoni under laboratory conditions. In the present study, seed essential oil was tested at seven different doses (5 to 1000 ppm) against to this pest. The chemical composition of the oil was determined by GC-MS. The essential oil of P. brutia was dominated by monoterpenes. Totally, 14 chemical compounds were identified by GC-MS analysis. ß-Pinene (38.15%) and a-pinene (24.99%) were identified as major chemical components followed by trans-ß-caryophyllene (15.24%) and germacrene-D (4.25%). As a result of analysis, P. brutia seed oil showed high larvicidal activity, with LD50 values of 187.88, 122.83 and 68.77 ppm, LD90 values of 608.85, 479.31 and 300.16 ppm at 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively. The results showed that the activities were dose dependent. Therefore, this essential oil could be useful for to find management strategies against populations of T. wilkinsoni. In this study, the larvicidal activity of essential oil from P. brutia against T. wilkinsoni was evaluated for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In prehistoric archaeology, pottery is a significant fragment in defining and making sense of the culture. The pottery forms and the differences in the variety of decorations are used together with other archaeological elements in the stratification of the settlement at the local scale. Bahçelievler settlement is located in the southeast of the Marmara Sea and in a mountainous area, unlike many other settlements with similar cultural characteristics. Bahçelievler Neolithic settlement was inhabited for the first time between 7192 and 7052 BCE and continued to be used until 6063–5971 BCE. Therefore, the settlement in question has a crucial role in the beginning and development of the Pottery Neolithic Period, especially in Northwestern Anatolia. Both the differences in form variation and the change in decoration preferences, as well as the changes in undefined stone, limestone, quartz, volcanic rock, basalt, etc. additives, provide meaningful results in the settlement stratigraphy. As a result of petrographic research, Bahçelievler Neolithic potteries are divided into four main groups and are very compatible with the archaeological classification. Clay and clay paste used in pottery are almost entirely consistent with local clays. It has been understood that the tempered material, which is strictly compatible with the geology of the immediate environment, is preferred for pottery. Although different forms and ware groups were selected chronologically to evaluate all the data together, it can be quickly asserted that the samples were of local production.

- Abstract
We explore the weak field and slow motion limits, Newtonian and Post-Newtonian limits, of the energy–momentum powered gravity (EMPG), viz., the energy–momentum squared gravity (EMSG) of the form f (T μ ν T μ ν) = α (T μ ν T μ ν) η with α and η being constants. We have shown that EMPG with η ≥ 0 and general relativity (GR) are not distinguishable by local tests, say, the Solar System tests; as they lead to the same gravitational potential form, PPN parameters, and geodesics for the test particles. However, within the EMPG framework, M ast , the mass of an astrophysical object inferred from astronomical observations such as planetary orbits and deflection of light, corresponds to the effective mass M eff (α , η , M) = M + M empg (α , η , M) , M being the actual physical mass and M empg being the modification due to EMPG. Accordingly, while in GR we simply have the relation M ast = M , in EMPG we have M ast = M + M empg . Within the framework of EMPG, if there is information about the values of { α , η } pair or M from other independent phenomena (from cosmological observations, structure of the astrophysical object, etc.), then in principle it is possible to infer not only M ast alone from astronomical observations, but M and M empg separately. For a proper analysis within EMPG framework, it is necessary to describe the slow motion condition (also related to the Newtonian limit approximation) by | p eff / ρ eff | ≪ 1 (where p eff = p + p empg and ρ eff = ρ + ρ empg ), whereas this condition leads to | p / ρ | ≪ 1 in GR. We present the results of a comprehensive mineralogical and geochemical (archaeometrical) investigation of ceramics dating to the Early Bronze Age II (2600/2500-2200 BC) and the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1600 BC) from sites located in the Upper Meander Basin of Denizli province in southwestern Anatolia. We analyzed the mineralogical and petrographical characteristics of the samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy, and we examined the chemical compositions with X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). In general, the primary components of the ceramics include coarse-grained quartz, biotite, muscovite, pyroxene, plagioclase, and metamorphic rock fragments; we estimate a firing temperature under 800°C. The ceramics appear to be locally manufactured, given the close relationship between their mineralogical properties and the local geological structure and topography. Our analysis indicates that people living in the mountainous, plateau, and lowland areas each preferred different clay deposits in their pottery production. All of these areas, however, shared similar production technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background Actinic keratoses are the most common premalignant skin lesions worldwide. They are of public health importance since their presence has been associated with the significantly increased incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), especially when they are numerous and have coalesced into an area with severe photodamage. The current study aimed to evaluate the relationships between sun-related risk factors, perceived seriousness of actinic keratosis (AK), skin cancer examination (SCE) history, and newly detected NMSC in AK patients. Methods In this descriptive, cross-sectional, case–control study, firstly we examined the demographics, phenotypic traits, sun exposure history, cancer history and newly detected NMSC with full-body skin examinations in AK patients (n = 198) and controls. Secondly, the effects of these parameters, AK knowledge and AK-related clinical findings on the perceived seriousness of AK, SCE history and the presence of newly detected NMSC in AK patients were evaluated. Results The presence of newly detected NMSC was significantly higher in patients aged ≥65 years, with personal or family skin cancer history, higher AK severity and photoaging grade; however, it was observed that these cases did not perceive AK as a serious illness and did not visit a physician for an SCE previously. Conclusion This is the first study evaluating sun-related risk factors, knowledge and perceived seriousness of disease and SCE findings of AK patients in Turkey. Our results indicate that national health awareness campaigns and skin cancer scanning programs should be developed especially for the patients under the sun-related risks of AKs and NMSC occurrence.
