Rabbit Fibroma is a Leporipoxviral disease and is considered the third most common cutaneous neoplasm in pet rabbits. Two domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were submitted to the veterinary clinic due to the presence of a nodule on the lip. Histologically, epithelial cells of the epidermis and hair follicles showed mild to moderate ballooning degeneration, spongiosis, and several eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The dermis was expanded by atypical spindle cells that also showed eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The tissues were evaluated by using transmission electron microscopy. In both cases, keratinocytes exhibit several electron dense and pleomorphic intracytoplasmic viral particles consistent with Poxviruses. Rabbit oncology is gaining more attention as more pet rabbits are surviving beyond their normal lifespans. Due to the limited epidemiological information on pet rabbits’ tumors in Thailand, this study aimed to report the prevalence and the potential risk factors associated with tumors in pet rabbits in Thailand. From 2018 to 2022, 93 tissue biopsies from tumor-suspected lesions on pet rabbits were gathered from animal hospitals in Bangkok and Chonburi provinces, Thailand. According to histopathology confirmation, tumors and tumor-like lesions were diagnosed. In this study, the overall tumors were 67.74% (n=63) out of the submitted cases (n=93). The most commonly affected organ systems were reproduction (65.08%) and integumentary (22.22%). Rabbits older than 5 years were 3.85 times more likely to have reproductive tumors than younger rabbits (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.45–10.27, P≤0.01), and the most frequently occurring tumor type was uterine adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, male rabbits had a 17.02 times higher probability of developing cutaneous tumors than female rabbits (95% CI: 4.19–69.11, P≤0.001), and the most frequently occurring tumor type was soft tissue sarcoma. The results of this study thus suggested that the age and sex of the rabbits were potential risk factors for tumor development in Thailand. The knowledge gained from our study also provided the recommendation for owners to monitor their rabbits’ health annually, particularly after late middle age, and rendered guidance for tumor detection in practical clinics. We document the frequency and morphological and immunohistochemical features of inclusion bodies in uterine smooth muscle cells in 56 (76%) of 74 investigated pet rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Inclusion bodies began to appear at the age of 2 years and their frequency increased with age (P = 0.047, r = 0.33). They ranged from 5 to 20 μm in diameter, were slightly basophilic to amphophilic with well-delimited oval bodies in haematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue sections and formed in the cytoplasm of the uterine smooth muscle cells with displacement of the cell nuclei. The inclusion bodies were positive with periodic acid–Schiff, Best's carmine, Lugol's iodine and Grocott's methenamine silver methods. They were immunoreactive to a monoclonal antibody raised against human polyglucosan and negative with monoclonal antibodies for several intermediate filament proteins. Electron microscopy revealed that they were non-membranous structures composed of electron-dense amorphous material. The morphological, histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of the inclusion bodies in the rabbi uteri were similar to those of human polyglucosan bodies (PGBs). We made 2 Z-based in situ hybridization (ISH) probes for the detection of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2; Lagovirus GI.2) nucleic acid in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) that had died during an outbreak of RHD in Washington, USA. One probe system was made for detection of negative-sense RNA (i.e., the replicative intermediate RNA for the virus), and the other probe system was constructed for detection of genomic and mRNA of the virus (viral mRNA). Tissue sets were tested separately, and the viral mRNA probe system highlighted much broader tissue distribution than that of the replicative intermediate RNA probe system. The latter was limited to liver, lung, kidney, spleen, myocardium, and occasional endothelial staining, whereas signal for the viral mRNA was seen in many more tissues. The difference in distribution suggests that innate phagocytic activity of various cell types may cause overestimation of viral replication sites when utilizing ISH of single-stranded, positive-sense viruses. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2), a virulent and contagious viral pathogen that affects wild and domestic lagomorph populations, was identified in Wyoming, USA in December 2020. A surveillance program was developed involving full-carcass submission and liver analysis, although carcass quality as a result of predation and decomposition impeded analysis. To increase the number of submissions and provide flexibility to field staff, we evaluated 2 sample types: 77 dried blood on filter paper samples, 66 ear punch samples. At initial sampling, test specificity and sensitivity of the RT-rtPCR utilizing dried blood on filter paper and ear punch samples were both 100% compared to liver. Filter paper results were consistent over time; sensitivity stayed >96% through weeks 2, 4, and 6, with a maximum mean difference of 6.0 Ct from baseline liver Ct values (95% CI: 5.0–7.3) at 6 wk. Test sensitivity of the ear punch sample at 1, 3, 5, and 7 wk post-sampling remained at 100%, with a maximum mean difference of 5.6 Ct from baseline liver Ct values (95% CI: 4.3–6.9) at 5 wk. Filter paper and ear punch samples were suitable alternatives to liver for RHDV2 surveillance in wild lagomorph populations. Alternative sampling options provide more flexibility to surveillance programs, increase testable submissions, and decrease exposure of field personnel to zoonotic disease agents. Over a 3-y period, 12 adult New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits were presented for postmortem examination following variably long periods of inappetence and soft-to-liquid stool production. Postmortem findings included serosanguineous fluid in abdominal and thoracic cavities, dark-red-to-white renal foci, reddened intestinal serosa, and pulmonary edema. Microscopically, mesangial changes and thrombi were observed in renal glomeruli, and mild-to-severe enteritis was observed. These findings resemble hemolytic uremic syndrome, which typically follows enterocolitis associated with Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli infection. In our case series, various gram-negative bacteria, most commonly E. coli, were isolated from the intestinal tracts; however, Stx production was not demonstrated. Evidence of Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection, a common cause of renal disease in rabbits, was also not found. Our cases suggest that gram-negative enteric bacteria should be included in the differential diagnosis of renal disease in NZW rabbits, especially in cases with an accompanying clinical history of gastrointestinal disorder. Neoplasms of the intestinal tract are uncommon in rabbits and primary lymphoma of the intestinal tract is rare. This case series is the first detailed description of primary intestinal lymphoma in rabbits. We reviewed four cases of primary intestinal lymphoma in rabbits aged 5–9.5 years old with an average age of 7.8 years. Neoplastic cells in three cases were large (8 μm diameter) while one case had intermediate cells (5 μm diameter). Neoplastic lymphocytes were of B-cell lineage and characterized by intense, multifocal, membranous immunoreactivity for CD79a and no immunoreactivity to CD3. Based on the Revised European-American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms/World Health Organization classification, three of the cases were consistent with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and the case with intermediate-sized neoplastic cells was consistent with lymphoblastic lymphoma. A 4-y-old, spayed female, mixed-breed domesticated rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus) was presented because of progressive bilateral exophthalmos, with a large mediastinal mass in the cranial thorax. Palliative radiation therapy was elected, and 4 fractions of 5 Gy were delivered twice weekly under general anesthesia using 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy for a total dose of 20 Gy, guided by an on-board cone beam CT scan. Quality-of-life and respiratory rate improved before sudden death that followed an episode of dyspnea. The overall survival time following initial diagnosis was 93 d, with 68 d after the first dose of radiation. An autopsy was performed, and the mass was diagnosed as a type A thymoma. In rabbits, a white-spotted liver can be indicative of one of several disease processes, frequently caused by parasites. To date, the prevalence of white-spotted liver in wild rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, in the United Kingdom is undetermined. We evaluated the prevalence and main parasitic etiologies of this entity in a U.K. population of wild rabbits. Wild rabbits (n = 87) were shot in Cambridgeshire for population control, and cadavers were donated for research. Postmortem examination was undertaken, including gross and histologic hepatic examination. Macroscopic lesions consistent with white-spotted liver were found in 46 of 87 (53%) rabbits examined; most of these lesions were considered to be mild. For 28 of 46 (59%) rabbits with gross hepatic lesions, an etiologic agent was apparent histologically. Eimeria stiedae was detected in 21 of 87 (24%) rabbits, and Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) was detected in 7 of 87 (8%). In the subset of rabbits killed in the summer, there was a significant association between white-spotted liver and juvenile age class. There was also an association between white-spotted liver caused by E. stiedae and juvenile age class. When restricting analysis to rabbits with white-spotted liver caused by E. stiedae and submitted in the summer, both juvenile age class and female had significant effects. E. stiedae and C. hepaticum can be transmitted to pet lagomorphs via contaminated vegetation, and to humans in the case of the latter, which demonstrates the importance of monitoring the prevalence of these parasitic diseases in wild rabbits. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) that succumbed to rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2; Lagovirus GI.2) during the 2019 outbreak in Washington, USA, were utilized for in situ hybridization via RNAscope (ACDBio). This detection method was both sensitive and specific, with no staining in tissues from RHDV- (Lagovirus GI.1) and RHDV2-negative rabbits, and only slight background staining of RHDV-positive rabbits; RHDV2-positive tissues had bright-red cytoplasmic staining. Although much of the viral mRNA detection was consistent with previously described antigen detection via immunohistochemistry of the liver, lungs, and spleen, there was also significant glomerular staining in the kidneys, and endothelial staining within blood vessels of almost all organs. We validated the RNAscope technique for detection of RHDV2 mRNA in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues, with increased sensitivity from previous techniques, and identified additional affected cell types that may contribute to the understanding of pathogenesis. An outbreak of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2)-associated disease occurred in the southwestern United States following its first detection in New Mexico in March 2020. The disease spread throughout several states and was diagnosed for the first time in California on May 11, 2020, in a black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus). The following day, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) issued an order banning the entrance into California of several lagomorph species and their products from any state in which the disease had been detected in the last 12 mo. RHDV2 is a threat to wild lagomorph species in California, including the endangered riparian brush rabbit (Sylvilagus bachmani riparius). Therefore, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) started tracking any mortality event in wild lagomorph populations. As of August 9, 2020, RHDV2 had been detected in wild and domestic lagomorphs of several counties in southern California that were submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety laboratory system by the CDFA or the CDFW. These positive cases included 2 additional black-tailed jackrabbits and 3 desert cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus audubonii). A total of ten 1-2-year-old rabbits died within 2 weeks at a facility in Ehime prefecture in May 2019. Necropsy revealed liver discoloration and fragility, hemorrhage of some organs and blood coagulation failure. On histopathologic examination, necrotizing hepatitis was a common finding, together with fibrin thrombi in the small vessels and hemorrhage in some organs. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) virus gene was detected in liver samples, and viral particles of approximately 32 nm in diameter were found in the cytoplasm of degenerated hepatocytes by electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analysis based on the partial VP60 gene sequence classified it as Lagovirus europaeus GI.2/RHDV2. Twenty-three of 42 European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), belonging to the same rabbit colony, died in March 2020 (55% mortality) in Chiba prefecture, Japan. The disease course was extremely acute without indicators of death or hemorrhage. Necropsy revealed liver swelling, discoloration, cloudiness and fragility, and pulmonary edema. Histologically, severe hepatocellular necrosis (mainly peripheral) and intra-glomerular capillary hyalin thrombi were observed. On molecular-biological examination, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis of RNA from tissues detected a rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus, confirmed as a RHDV-2 VP60 fragment, which shared 99.42% nucleotide identity with the homologous fragment of RHDV-2 German isolate by nucleotide sequence analysis. The aim of this research was to study pathomorphological alterations in the internal organs of rabbits through experimental reproduction of colibacillosis. The studies were conducted on 10 clinically healthy rabbits at the age of 3 months from a private farm. Animals were infected by intraperitoneal injection of a suspension of a pure culture of Escherichia coli isolated from a sand lizard. The disease of infected rabbits was accompanied by cachexia, dehydration and fever. The pathological process in the organism of infected animals was characterized by the violation of hemodynamics, the protein dystrophy of the parenchyma of liver, kidneys, myocardium and the formation of specific granulomas in the lungs and liver. The edema of reticular tissue and the hyperplasia of lymph nodes were observed in the organs of the immune system. Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) can be lethal to Oryctolagus cuniculus. There are 2 types of RHDV, namely RHDV1 and RHDV2, which share a similar protein sequence. The protein sequence of these viruses is similar to other caliciviruses, such as the European brown hare syndrome virus (EBHSV) and Australian rabbit calicivirus (RCV-A1). High homology in their protein sequence may lead to the antibody's cross-reactivity to different antigens from these viruses. To design a short peptide synthetic epitope for diagnostic purposes, this study predicts 12 amino acid long immunogenic epitopes unique to RHDV1 and RHDV2. The protein sequences of RHDV1 and RHDV2 were mapped for possible epitopes. The identified epitopes, which were at least 12 amino acid long, were evaluated for antigenicity, hydrophilicity, and surface accessibility. The peptide sequence of the qualified epitopes was aligned with the protein sequence of RHDV1, RHDV2, EBHSV, and RCV-A1. The results show that out of 64 potential epitopes in RHDV1 and 67 varying length epitopes of RHDV2, only 31 and 32 12 amino acid long epitopes in RHDV1 and RHDV2, respectively, have desirable antigenic properties. Only three 12 continuous epitopes from each type of RHDV can distinguish them from each other. Among these 3 candidate short peptide epitopes, only SYPGNNATNVLQ in RHDV1 and VPSNPQPTTTTS in RHDV2 may differ from EBHSV and RCV-A1. These findings suggest that the unique immunogenic epitopes of RHDV1 and RHDV2 may potentially impact the development of diagnostic assays and vaccines specific to the different types of RHDV. The clinical and pathological records of 44 domestic, female rabbits with an age ranging from 6–124 months (median age: 63.5 month) were assessed retrospectively for ovarian lesions. Included were all rabbits that underwent an ovariohysterectomy with a subsequent pathological examination of the genital tract between March 1997 and June 2016. Pathological examination revealed ovarian lesions in 12 of the 44 rabbits including follicular cysts (n=7), cystic rete ovarii (n=3), widespread ovarian necrosis with dystrophic calcification (n=2), ovarian adenoma (n=1). Clinical examination including radiographs only suggested ovarian disorders in two cases of ovarian necrosis with dystrophic calcification and in two cases of cystic rete ovarii. A five-year-old rabbit was evaluated for a 7 to 8 month history of regurgitation, weight loss, and hyporexia. Previously performed whole body radiographs, plasma biochemistry results and complete blood count revealed had no significant abnormalities. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a circumferential caudal esophageal thickening. The animal received supportive care until euthanasia was performed 6 weeks later. Caudal esophageal smooth muscle hypertrophy was diagnosed on necropsy. This case indicates that regurgitation can occur in rabbits and advanced imaging can investigate the underlying cause. Muscular contraction dynamics depends on active and passive muscle properties (e.g., the force-velocity relation) as well as on the three-dimensional (3D) muscle structure (e.g., the muscle fascicle architecture and aponeurosis dimensions). Much is known about active muscle force generation and the muscle architecture at a particular age (mostly for adult specimens), but less is known about changes in muscle structure during growth. The present study analyzed growth-related changes in the muscle structure of rabbit gastrocnemius lateralis (GL), gastrocnemius medialis (GM), flexor digitorum longus (FDL), and tibialis anterior (TA). Changes in tendon length, muscle belly dimensions (length, width, thickness), as well as aponeurosis length, width, and area were determined using 55 rabbits between 18 and 108 days old. Additionally, the 3D muscle fascicle architecture of five rabbits of different ages (21, 37, 50, 70, 100 days) was determined using a manual digitizer. We found an almost linear increase over time in most of the geometrical parameters observed. GL and GM showed very similar growth characteristics. In contrast to the pronounced increase in muscle belly length of GL and GM, FDL and TA exhibited more uniform muscle belly growth in length, width, and thickness. In general, the aponeuroses of the muscles exhibited lower growth rates in width than in length, and aponeurosis areas were larger than physiological cross-sectional areas. There were almost no changes in fascicle lengths with increasing age for GL, GM, and FDL. In contrast, there was a clear increase in TA fascicle length from about 20 to over 40 mm. Pennation angles of TA (11.0 ± 2.1°) and FDL (16.7 ± 3.2°) remained almost unchanged but increased for GL from 13.4 ± 3.3° to 24.3 ± 6.5° from the youngest to the oldest animal. For all muscles observed, the tendon-muscle fascicle length ratio ( r TFL ) changed during growth. GL and GM exhibited similar increases in r TFL from about 4–8. FDL showed the highest ratio, which increased from about 8–13, whereas TA had the lowest ratio, which decreased slightly from 2 to 1.5. The outcomes demonstrate new findings regarding changes in 3D muscle architecture and aponeurosis shape during growth, and they provide information for muscle force generation, functional relevance, and adaptation with respect to animal age. Dental pathologies are highly prevalent in pet rabbit populations, making oral radiography an essential tool in the evaluation of lagomorph dentitions. The unique anatomy of the rabbit's mouth limits the examination of the conscious animal to the rostral portion of it's mouth. In addition, the oral examination of an aradicular hypsodont tooth is restricted to the short coronal fraction of its crown. Erstwhile images obtained by the extraoral technique were once considered the most practical and informative tool in rabbit dentistry; however, limited visualization of the key structures of individual teeth became the major drawback of this technique. As new imaging technologies are becoming widely available and affordable for veterinarians, intraoral radiography offers the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat oral pathologies in lagomorphs. This article describes a step-by-step procedure to obtain a full-mouth radiographic survey in rabbits. For this technique, a standard dental X-ray generator and intraoral storage phosphor plates are used while applying the bisecting angle technique. Among the advantages of this technique are detailed visualization of internal and external dental structures, identification of early lesions, and detection of occult pathologies. Furthermore, intraoral images offer superior resolution and higher diagnostic quality with minimal radiation exposure, making this method safer for the veterinarian, staff members, and their patients. Summary Trichoblastoma is the most common skin tumour in the rabbit. The aim of the present study was to characterize the histological and immunohistochemical features of trichoblastoma in 27 rabbits. Common sites of tumour occurrence were the neck (6/30, 20%), head (5/30, 16.7%), flank (4/30, 13.3%) and hindlimb (4/30, 13.3%). Histologically, rabbit trichoblastoma was categorized into ribbon (10/30, 33.3%), trabecular (8/30, 26.7%) and mixed types (12/30, 40%). The tumour tissue showed close interaction with the surrounding stroma where prominent fibroblastic aggregation, known as papillary mesenchymal bodies, was frequently observed (24/30; 80%). Peritumoural stroma of all cases was stained by Alcian blue (at pH 2.5 with weaker staining at pH 1.0). Immunohistochemically, the peripheral palisading basal-type cells of the tumour were positive for cytokeratin (CK) 14 while the inner cells were typically positive for CK17, differing from the immunohistochemical profile of the rabbit epidermis and hair follicle. Summary Testicular seminoma is reported in the rabbit but data about the immunophenotype of these tumours are lacking. The classification of human testicular germ cell tumours includes spermatocytic tumour (ST) originating from the post-pubertal spermatogonia/spermatocytes, which metastasizes rarely, and seminoma (SE), originating from gonocytes, which is malignant and metastasizes frequently. Gonocytes express placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) and are stained with periodic acid–Schiff (PAS). We report five cases of seminoma in pet rabbits. Microscopically, all the cases were diffuse seminoma and in one case there was metastasis to a sublumbar lymph node. Immunohistochemical expression of PLAP was diffuse in this metastatic tumour, in two other cases it was multifocal, in another it was limited to rare cells and in the remaining case was negative. PAS-positive cells were detected only in the four cases that expressed PLAP. These four cases were therefore classified as SE and the tumour without PLAP labelling or PAS staining was defined as ST. Both forms of human germ cell tumour therefore occur in the rabbit. SE appears to be well represented and may show metastasis, paralleling the human counterpart. Toxoplasma gondii causes serious infection worldwide in humans and animals. In this study, the seroepidemiology of toxoplasmosis was investigated in wild boars (Sus scrofa) (n=377), wild rabbits (cape hare, Lapus capensis) (n=331), and wild chickens (red junglefwol, Gallus gallus) (n=571) in 4 forested and country sided area of Hubei province of China. For this, blood samples were collected and tested by indirect hemagglutination test (IHA). The seroprevalence was found to be 7.2%, 5.1%, and 12.6% in wild boars, rabbits, and chickens, respectively, with significant differences among these species. The prevalence of T. gondii infection in male and female wild boars was found to be 7.9% and 6.5% (P<0.01), in male and female rabbits was 5.6% and 4.9% (P<0.01), and in male and female chickens was 17.1% and 7.7% (P<0.01), respectively, with significant differences between 2 genders of chickens (P<0.01). The aim of this study was to identify antigens for a vaccine or drug target to control rabbit coccidiosis. A combination of 2-dimensional electrophoresis, immunoblotting, and mass spectrometric analysis were used to identify novel antigens from the sporozoites of Eimeria stiedae. Protein spots were recognized by the sera of New Zealand rabbits infected artificially with E. stiedae. The proteins were characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS) analysis in combination with bioinformatics. Approximately 868 protein spots were detected by silver-staining, and a total of 41 immunoreactive protein spots were recognized by anti-E. stiedae sera. Finally, 23 protein spots were successfully identified. The proteins such as heat shock protein 70 and aspartyl protease may have potential as immunodiagnostic or vaccine antigens. The immunoreactive proteins were found to possess a wide range of biological functions. This study is the first to report the proteins recognized by sera of infected rabbits with E. stiedae, which might be helpful in identifying potential targets for vaccine development to control rabbit coccidiosis. An 11-year-old castrated male rabbit presented with a subcutaneous mass in the right hind limb. The mass comprised solid and myxoid areas. Solid areas were characterized by a storiform or interlacing pattern of spindle cells, strap cells, multinucleated giant cells and round cells with eccentrically located nuclei, whereas the myxoid areas were composed predominantly of elongated fusiform cells with hyperchromatic nuclei embedded in Alcian Blue-positive myxoid stroma. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells in both areas were positive for desmin and vimentin. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells in the solid areas had abundant myofilaments with electron dense Z-band structures. Gastric stasis is common in rabbits, and gastrotomy may be performed to cure this pathological condition. Detailed descriptions of the arterial supply to the stomach are essential for this surgical operation, but published descriptions are limited. Here, we investigated anatomical variations of the arterial supply to the stomach in 43 New Zealand White rabbits by injecting colored latex into arteries. We observed that the left gastric artery that arose as the second branch from the celiac artery provided 1-3 parietal and 1-3 visceral branches to the stomach, with various branching patterns depending on the case. In 34 of 43 cases, the left gastric artery ended upon entering the gastric wall at the lesser curvature, whereas in the remaining cases, the artery continued as the hepatic artery without entering the gastric wall. The right gastric artery that branched off from the gastroduodenal artery also supplied the lesser curvature sinistrally but did not anastomose with the left gastric artery. In 40 cases, the hepatic artery provided 1-4 pyloric branches. In the fundic region, the short gastric arteries arose from the splenic artery and varied in number from 2 to 6. The right and left gastroepiploic arteries anastomosed to give 2-7 branches to the greater curvature. The results showed that many variations occurred in the arteries supplying the rabbit stomach, suggesting that such variations should be considered when performing veterinary surgical treatments in rabbits. A study of 426 rabbits from 3 cities in Jilin province (Changchun City and Jilin City) and Liaoning province (Shenyang City) was conducted between May and June 2015. The overall prevalence of E. bieneusi in rabbits was 0.94% (4/426), with 0% (0/116), 1.72% (3/174), and 0.74% (1/136) in Jilin, Changchun, and Shenyang City, respectively. Only 3 farms (farm 1 and farm 3 in Changchun City, farm 8 in Shenyang City) were PCR-positive for E. bieneusi. Moreover, rabbits of more than 6 months (1.72%) had the highest E. bieneusi prevalence, followed by rabbits of 4-6 months (1.26%), 2-3 months (0.58%), and less than 1 month (0%). Analysis of ITS gene of E. bieneusi suggested that all 4 E. bieneusi isolates were genotype D, and were classified as group 1a. The present results first demonstrated the existence of zoonotic E. bieneusi in domestic rabbits in China. Effective control measures should be implemented to prevent E. bieneusi infection in domestic rabbits, other animals, and humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work paper is a long list of hereditary diseases observed by us or reported by others in domestic rabbit (or European rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus). Due to its large phenotypic and genetic variability, O. cuniculus is an excellent model for classical genetics, including here inheritance of color patterns and genetic disorders. For that reason, this mammalian model is widely used in human biomedical or veterinary research, together with rat, Guinea pig, and mouse. All these species are called also "human models" because of their similarity with humans in physiological response. Despite the particular susceptibility of the rabbit to experimental infection with Human herpesvirus 1 (HHV-1) and the high seroprevalence of HHV-1 in human beings, reports of natural infection in pet rabbits are rare. The current report describes 2 cases of HHV encephalitis in pet rabbits in North America. Antemortem clinical signs included seizures, ptyalism, and muscle tremors. Results of complete blood cell count and plasma biochemistry panel were unremarkable except for a mild leukocytosis in both cases. Both rabbits died after a short period of hospitalization. Rabbit 1 presented mild optic chiasm hemorrhage on gross examination, while rabbit 2 had no gross lesions. Histologic findings for both cases included lymphocytic and/or lymphoplasmacytic encephalitis with necrosis and the presence of intranuclear inclusion bodies in neurons and glial cells. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of affected brain tissue using primers specific for Human herpesvirus 1 and 2 confirmed diagnosis of HHV encephalitis for rabbit 1. Immunohistochemical staining (poly- and monoclonal) and PCR analysis using primers specific to HHV-1 confirmed the diagnosis of HHV-1 encephalitis for rabbit 2. The owner of rabbit 2 was suspected to be the source of infection due to close contact during an episode of herpes labialis. Given the high susceptibility of rabbits to experimental HHV-1, high seroprevalence of HHV-1 in human beings, and severity of clinical disease in this species, clinician awareness and client education is important for disease prevention. Human herpesvirus 1 encephalitis should be considered as a differential diagnosis for rabbits with neurologic disease. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is contagious and highly lethal. Commercial vaccines against RHD are produced from the livers of experimentally infected rabbits. Although several groups have reported that recombinant subunit vaccines against rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) are promising, application of the vaccines has been restricted due to high production costs or low yield. In the present study, we performed codon optimization of the capsid gene to increase the number of preference codons and eliminate rare codons in Spodoptera frugiperda 9 (Sf9) cells. The capsid gene was then subcloned into the pFastBac plasmid, and the recombinant baculoviruses were identified with a plaque assay. As expected, expression of the optimized capsid protein was markedly increased in the Sf9 cells, and the recombinant capsid proteins self-assembled into virus-like particles (VLPs) that were released into the cell supernatant. Rabbits inoculated with the supernatant and the purified VLPs were protected against RHDV challenge. A rapid, specific antibody response against RHDV was detected by an ELISA in all of the experimental groups. In conclusion, this strategy of producing a recombinant subunit vaccine antigen can be used to develop a low-cost, insect cell-derived recombinant subunit vaccine against RHDV. Abstract: The reconstruction of large bony defects remains a clinical challenge, and angiogenesis and neovascularisation are being given more attention in bone tissue engineering. In this study we cocultured peripheral blood CD34+ cells (PB-CD34+ cells), an endothelial progenitor cell/haematopoietic stem cell-enriched population, with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) to investigate their potential for bony regeneration. Cocultured cells showed better osteogenic differentiation than MSC alone in vitro. The cocultured cells and MSC sheets were also composited with hydroxyapatite and implanted in calvarial critical-size defects in rabbits. The rabbits were killed before microcomputed tomographic (MicroCT) and histological analysis. The results showed that cocultured cell composites had promoted bony regeneration more efficiently by 8 weeks after implantation. Our results indicate that the coculture of PB-CD34+ cells and MSC increases bony regeneration in calvarial critical-size defects in rabbits, and provide a new promising therapeutic strategy to aid skeletal healing. Summary: A 1.5-year-old neutered male rabbit was presented with chronic nasal discharge and ataxia. Rapid progression of neurological signs was noted subsequent to general anaesthesia and the rabbit was humanely destroyed due to the poor prognosis. At necropsy examination there were no gross changes affecting the brain or spinal cord. Microscopical examination revealed that the perikarya of numerous neurons in the brain and spinal cord were distended by the intracytoplasmic accumulation of pale, finely granular to vacuolar material. Transmission electron microscopy showed this to be composed of concentric membranous cytoplasmic bodies. Thin layer chromatography revealed elevation of GM2 ganglioside in the brain of this rabbit compared with that of an unaffected control rabbit. Enzymatically, there was markedly reduced activity of tissue β-hexosaminidase A in brain and liver tissue from the rabbit. This was a result of an almost complete absence of the enzymatic activity of the α-subunit of that enzyme. Abstract: A 15-month-old, ovariohysterectomized female Lionhead rabbit was presented with generalized chronic exfoliative dermatitis and patchy alopecia. General physical examination revealed no abnormalities apart from a body condition score of 4 of 9. Ectoparasitic infestation, dermatophytosis, Malassezia dermatitis, epitheliotropic lymphoma, thymoma-associated exfoliative dermatitis, and autoimmune hepatitis-associated exfoliative dermatitis were excluded on the basis of skin scrapings, fungal culture, cutaneous histopathology, thoracic radiography, and the results of hematologic and biochemical analyses. Histopathology of the skin showed orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, absence of sebaceous glands and mural lymphocytic folliculitis, consistent with sebaceous adenitis. The extent and severity of the skin lesions were scored by the Rabbit Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index adapted from the recently published Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index–03. Once-daily oral treatment with 5 mg/kg of ciclosporin A dissolved in an equal amount of a medium-chain triglyceride solution (Miglyol 812; Bufa, Uitgeest, The Netherlands) was initiated, but the response to this was poor. Therefore, while maintaining the oral treatment, topical treatment with phytosphingosine products was given. The rabbit''s coat was clipped and a phytosphingosine 0.2% microemulsion spray (daily), a phytosphingosine 0.1% shampoo (weekly), and a phytosphingosine 1% spot-on treatment (weekly) were applied. Nine months later, there had been significant hair regrowth on previously hairless areas and the Rabbit Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index confirmed the marked improvement with a 91% reduction in the original score. The article presents a case study of a one-year-old male neutered lop-eared rabbit who was suffering from a highly contagious and acutely fatal rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD). Abstract: A 2-year-old castrated male Holland lop rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented for loss of hind limb motor function after leaping from the owner''s arms. Results of a neurologic examination revealed appropriate mentation, normal thoracic limb posture and gait, paralysis in the right pelvic limb, and voluntary movement of the left pelvic limb. Superficial pain perception and withdrawal reflexes were present bilaterally in the hind limbs. Bilateral proprioception was evident in the forelimbs but absent in the hind limbs. Standard radiographs and a myelogram were performed, revealing subluxations at T5-T6, L1-L2, and L3-L4, a comminuted fracture of the T9 vertebral body, fractures of the right articular facets of L3-L4, and spinal cord swelling at T9. The clinical signs continued to decline, resulting in paraplegia with loss of deep pain perception in the left hind limb after the myelogram procedure. The owners of the rabbit were given a guarded-to-poor prognosis for the animal to regain mobility in the hind limbs. The rabbit was hospitalized and medical treatment including pain management, intravenous fluid therapy, nutritional support, and cage rest was initiated. After the initial decline of the clinical signs, the neurologic deficits stabilized during hospitalization. At the time of discharge, partial voluntary movement had been regained in the right hind limb, but there was no movement or pain perception in the left hind limb. This gradually resolved over 3 months of conservative therapy, at which point the rabbit had recovered the voluntary movement in both hind limbs and was able to ambulate by walking and hopping. This case report documents acute spinal cord trauma in a rabbit, as well as recovery of the neurologic deficits after prolonged medical management. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article presents a comparative assessment between immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) as dependable detection methods for detection of Encephalitozoon cuniculi of rabbits in Vienna, Austria. Researchers several samples using both methods on the kidneys and brains of infected rabbits. They found that IHC is effective in identifying Encephalitozoon cuniculi compared to ISH.

The article discusses a study which identified all pet rabbits in which a mediastinal mass was diagnosed between February 2007 and January 2010. Signalment, history and clinical signs were evaluated along with diagnostic work-up, treatment modalities and survival time. The study found that cytology of samples collected by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration is an accurate diagnostic tool to identify thymomas in rabbits.
