1. Physiological role of circadian clock gene on the energetic metabolism in horses.

- Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the linkage between the molecular clock and the metabolic processes in horses. Ten clinically healthy Italian Saddle horses of 8-11 years old (body weight of 480 ± 25 Kg) were housed in individual boxes under natural photoperiod (sunrise at 6:10 h, sunset at 18:10 h) and natural environmental conditions (T max 18°C, T min 16°C, Rh 70%). They were fed 3 times a day (07.00, 12.00, and 19.00) and water was available ad libitum. On each horse, blood sample collections were performed every 4 hours over a 48-hour period. Glucose, total proteins, total lipids levels and clock genes (Clock and Bmal1) expression were assed. The method of single Cosinor was applied to evaluate the daily rhythmicity of the texted parameters. Glucose, total proteins and total lipids showed a robust daily rhythmicity; diurnal for glucose and total lipids, and nocturnal for total proteins and Bmal1. Clock no showed daily rhythmicity in horses. Two ways ANOVA was applied to compare acrophase and robustness of rhythm. Only Clock no showed an effect of time. No effect of day was observed on each tested parameter, acrophase and robustness. Statistical differences in acrophase were observed among diurnal and nocturnal parameters. Further studies are necessary to better understand the peripheral circadian rhythmicity in this species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
