To determine the association between sleep quality and lack of glycemic control in a Mexican population of type 2 diabetes patients. Cross-sectional study. Two hundred two patients between 20 and 60 years old with a previous diagnosis of diabetes were included. Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and lack of glycemic control as a glycated hemoglobin A1c level ≥ 7 %. Univariate and multivariate analyses using logistic regression were performed. The study population showed poor sleep quality and a lack of glycemic control of 70.3 % and 69.8 %, respectively. The prevalence of patients with both conditions was 52.5 %. In multivariate analysis, poor sleep quality was significantly associated with a lack of glycemic control (OR = 2.3, p = 0.030). Other associated variables were napping (p = 0.015), diabetes duration (p = 0.011), insulin use (p = 0.024), and diastolic blood pressure ≥ 85 mmHg (p = 0.029). The prevalence of lack of glycemic control in the study population is high. Poor sleep quality significantly doubles the risk of lack of glycemic control, even in the presence of other risk factors. • Prevalence of poor sleep quality in Mexican patients with diabetes is 70 %. • 50 % of these patients have lack of glycemic control and poor sleep quality. • The poor sleep quality significantly doubles the risk of uncontrolled diabetes. Objective: To assess whether loss of energy and concentration difficulty are related to allergic rhinitis. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Secondary care allergy outpatients. Participants: A total of 100 patients with allergic rhinitis and 96 healthy subjects. Main Outcome Measure: Loss of energy and concentration difficulty were assessed through a survey using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Results: The average BDI-II score was higher in the allergic rhinitis population than in the healthy controls (12.8 points vs 1.8 points, P <.0001), and the frequencies of loss of energy (69.0% vs 32.3%) and concentration difficulty (65.0% vs 34.4%) were higher in patients with allergic rhinitis (P <.0001). The prevalence of depression was 0% in the control group and 38% in the case group (P <.0001). Allergic rhinitis and depression were independently associated with loss of energy, odds ratio (OR) = 2.55, P =.005, and OR = 9.61, P =.001, respectively, and concentration difficulty (OR = 2.04, P =.033; OR = 6.19, P =.001, respectively). Conclusions: This study is one of the first studies in Latin America to report an independent association of allergic rhinitis with loss of energy and concentration difficulty. Objective To evaluate the effect size of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes and multi drug resistance (MDR). Methods A cohort with 507 individuals with diagnosed TB included 183 with coexistence of T2DM and TB (TB-T2DM). Participants were identified at the time of TB diagnosis and followed during the course of TB treatment. Then we computed relative risks and adjustments by Cox proportional hazards for outcome variables (drug resistance, death, relapse, treatment failure), and the size of their effect as Cohen's- d. Results Patients with TB-T2DM were more likely to remain positive for acid-fast bacilli after two months of anti-TB treatment RR = [2.01 (95% CI: 1.3, 3.1)], to have drug resistant (DR) [OR 3.5 (95% CI: 1.8, 6.7)] and multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB [OR 3.5 (95% CI: 1.8, 7.1)]. The Cohen's- d for DR or MDR in T2DM was 0.69 when compared with non-DM subjects. The T2DM patients had higher odds of resistance to isoniazid (OR 3.9, 95% CI: 2.01, 7.9), rifampicin (OR 3.4, 95% CI: 1.6, 7.2) and pyrazinamide (OR 9.4, 95% CI: 2.8, 25.6), and their effect sizes were ≥0.67. Patients with TB-T2DM (versus no DM) were more likely to present with MDR TB (HR 3.1; 95% CI: 1.7, 5.8; p < 0.001), treatment failure (HR 2.04; 95% CI: 1.07, 3.8; p = 0.02) and relapse (HR 1.86; 95% CI: 1.09, 3.1; p = 0.02), with effect size ≥0.34. Conclusion T2DM showed a substantial contribution to the presence of DR or MDR-TB and to adverse clinical outcomes during and after TB treatment. Our findings support the importance for routine screening of T2DM among newly-diagnosed TB patients in order to stratify them for immediate DR assessment, and highlight the need for clinical trials to evaluate variations to the standard TB treatment in TB-T2DM to prevent adverse treatment outcomes. This paper aims to assess diet and lifestyle by designing a healthy behavior index (HBI) related to the educational level and time of breast cancer (BC) diagnosis. 241 female breast cancer survivors treated at Centro Estatal de Cancerología (State Cancer Center) in Mexico were assessed based on dietary pattern, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, body size and shape, sleep disorders with increasing scores that represent less healthy characteristics. The odds ratios (OR) and quartiles of the healthy behavior index and the time of diagnosis were estimated. The regression model was used to assess the association between HBI and the BC covariates. The healthy behavior index for the two first quartiles was that of p < 0.001. The graphic behavior of correspondence with the covariates (age, schooling and moderate physical activity) showed a different three-dimensional effect on healthy behaviors. According to diagnosis time ≤ three years, the following covariates were significant: socioeconomic status, (OR: 4.34 CI 95% 1.2-9.5), sleep disturbances (p = 020) and protective intake of fruits and vegetables (p = 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, survivors with a high level of education are significantly more likely to show a healthy behavior (OR: 0.3 95% CI 0.12 - 0.8); as well as the early clinical stages (OR: 0.4 95% CI 0.2–0.9). In breast cancer survivors, both the high level of education and early clinical stages were important healthy behavior modifiers. Since diets are potentially modifiable, the findings may have further implications to promote a careful dietary pattern to prevent breast cancer. These variables should be assessed as a strategy in cancer survivor preventive programs. • The level of education played a key role when adopting a healthy behavior. • Sleep disorders were also more evident in the first years after the diagnosis. • Women with early clinical stages were the healthiest. • The survivors diagnosed before three years have an adequate quality of diet.
