- Abstract
Consensus has not been reached for the optimal postoperative care after high ankle sprain and syndesmotic fixation. A potential drawback of earlier return to activity is greater instability of the ankle and fixation failure. The controlled ankle motion (CAM) boot has been an effective implementation to stabilize the leg and may aid in safe early weightbearing status. However, there is insufficient study of its effect on motion in the syndesmosis following injury. Hence, the aim of this cadaveric study was to determine the stability of the ankle with a CAM boot at 3 levels of injury: syndesmosis ligaments intact (no injury), syndesmosis ligaments cut, and syndesmosis and fibula cut. Six cadaveric legs were subjected to each level of injury and axially loaded at 1 Hz between 100 N—1.5 times body weight for 50 seconds, and axial force, axial displacement, and optical tracking data were recorded. It was found that the ankle, when protected by the CAM boot, maintained syndesmosis motion with no difference (p >.05) from the uninjured state, regardless of syndesmotic ligament and fibular injury. This finding was consistent across anterior-posterior, medial-lateral, and superior-inferior axes. Overall, our study may suggest that early weightbearing with a CAM boot maintains a physiologically range of motion in the syndesmosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Chlorhexidine skin antisepsis is frequently recommended for most surgical procedures; however, it is unclear if these recommendations should apply to surgery involving traumatic contaminated wounds where povidone-iodine has previously been preferred. We aimed to compare the effect of aqueous 10% povidone-iodine versus aqueous 4% chlorhexidine gluconate on the risk of surgical site infection in patients who required surgery for an open fracture.

- Abstract
Background: Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are widely used for measurement of functional outcomes after orthopaedic trauma. However, PROMs rely on patient collaboration and suffer from various types of bias. Wearable Activity Monitors (WAMs) are increasingly used to objectify functional assessment. The objectives of this systematic review were to identify and characterise the WAMs technology and metrics currently used for orthopaedic trauma research. Methods: PubMed and Embase biomedical literature search engines were queried. Eligibility criteria included: Human clinical studies published in the English language between 2010 and 2019 involving fracture management and WAMs. Variables collected from each article included: Technology used, vendor/product, WAM body location, metrics measured, measurement time period, year of publication, study geographic location, phase of treatment studied, fractures studied, number of patients studied, sex and age of the study subjects, and study level of evidence. Six investigators reviewed the resulting papers. Descriptive statistics of variables of interest were used to analyse the data. Results: One hundred and thirty-six papers were available for analysis, showing an increasing trend of publications per year. Accelerometry followed by plantar pressure insoles were the most commonly employed technologies. The most common location for WAM placement was insoles, followed by the waist. The most commonly studied fracture type was hip fractures followed by fragility fractures in general, ankle, "lower extremity", and tibial fractures. The rehabilitation phase following surgery was the most commonly studied period. Sleep duration, activity time or step counts were the most commonly reported WAM metrics. A preferred, clinically validated WAM metric was not identified. Conclusions: WAMs have an increasing presence in the orthopaedic trauma literature. The optimal implementation of this technology and its use to understand patients' pre-injury and post-injury functions is currently insufficiently explored and represents an area that will benefit from future study. Systematic review registration number: PROSPERO ID:210344.

- Abstract
There are many digital solutions which assist the orthopaedic trauma surgeon. This already broad field is rapidly expanding, making a complete overview of the existing solutions difficult. The AO Foundation has established a task force to address the need for an overview of digital solutions in the field of orthopaedic trauma surgery.Areas of new technology which will help the surgeon gain a greater understanding of these possible solutions are reviewed. We propose a categorization of the current needs in orthopaedic trauma surgery matched with available or potential digital solutions, and provide a narrative overview of this broad topic, including the needs, solutions and basic rules to ensure adequate use in orthopaedic trauma surgery. We seek to make this field more accessible, allowing for technological solutions to be clearly matched to trauma surgeons’ needs.Cite this article: EFORT Open Rev2020;5:408-420. - Abstract
Aeromedical (AM) evacuation of trauma victims from action is an integral part of trauma care. The Israeli Air Force Rescue and Evacuation Unit is responsible for nearly all AM evacuations in Israel. We present three recent cases, within 1 year of operation, of engagement process failure during evacuations performed by the Rescue and Evacuation Unit. We then discuss possible pitfalls and lessons learned. In sum, we reveal that successful AM and ground crew engagement can save lives, as long as the engagement process is as short and efficient as possible.

- Abstract
Potato is relatively sensitive to water stress, and therefore indices for characterizing the degree of water stress and its relation to tuber yield are sought. During a series of field irrigation experiments on potatoes (Solanum tuberosumL.) conducted on a calcic haploxeralf in the Negev region of Israel, data were collected on leaf permeability (LP), leaf and tuber water potential (Ψ1and Ψ1, respectively) and photosynthetic rate, with the aim of relating the variables to a range of water stresses caused by the ratio irrigation/evaporation (Kp). Leaf permeability was linearly related to Ψ1, which ranged from −0.7 kJ kg−1in well irrigated plants to −1.4 kJ kg−1in severely water‐stressed plants. Tuber water potential, Ψ1, was higher by 0.4 to 0.7 kJ kg−1than Ψ1, the difference increasing with water stress. In trickle‐irrigated plants, Ψ1of tubers growing in dry soil was lower by 0.06 to 0.12 kJ kg−1than Ψ1of tubers growing in wet soil, even though the tubers were attached to the same stem. Photosynthesis increased with LP up to 0.8 mg CO2m−2sec−1and declined with plant age independently of LP. Marketable yield was well related to both seasonal LP and Ψ1, all three variables decreased when Kpdropped below 1.0. Leaf permeability seems to be a better index than leaf water potential for the characterization of water stress of potato in the field.

10. Durability of Polyethylene Films

- Abstract
This work deals with the weather-resistance of low-density polyethylene films. The performance under controlled laboratory conditions, of well-characterized polymer grades and various combinations of stabilizers was studied. The high molecular weight and narrowly-distributed grades seemed to have a better performance. While the unstabilized films were found to fail after a relatively short period, the synergistic combinations of UV absorbers, quenchers and anti-oxidants showed a marked increase in film duration. For the protected films, increasing film thickness improved performance. The increase of crystallinity upon ageing with the resulting decrease in oxygen permeability are highlighted. The role of oxygen diffusion into the film is significant both in thermal and in photo-oxidation.

11. Potato Irrigation Requirements in a Hot Climate Using Sprinkler and Drip Methods1

- Abstract
Potato (Solanum tuberosumL.) is a heat‐ and drought‐sensitive crop, which in hot climates usually requires large water applications for optimum production. Irrigation water in Israel is both limiting in quantity and high in price; thus it is critical to know the water requirement of the crop, as well as how to improve irrigation efficiency. Field experiments were conducted in the Negev (arid) region of Israel on a Typic Camborthid soil to determine the water production functions of potatoes (‘Desiree’) under drip and sprinkler irrigation. Irrigation treatments were based on Class A pan evaporation. The linear production functions relating total yield in metric ton ha−1to seasonal water application depth (W) in cm were, for sprinkler irrigation: Y = ‐23.5+1.19W, and for drip irrigation: Y = −12.8+1.14W. Similar total maximum yields were obtained with about 8 % less water with the drip as with the sprinkler method (not statistically significant). A single production function for both methods described the yield of marketable tubers: Y = −40.0+1.28W. These functions apply in the relative water application range (water applied over Class A pan evaporation) of 0.3 to 1.0, at which point the function reaches a plateau. Yield was reduced by 12% as soil water potential in the 0 to 0.6 m depth increment changed from −20 to −29 J kg−1for sprinkler irrigation. Under drip irrigation the soil could dry to −40 J kg−1without yield reduction, as long as the water supply was adequate. This was explained by the higher root concentration under drip than under sprinkler irrigation.

- Abstract
The amino acid sequence of ATP phosphoribosyltransferase [1-(5'-phosphoribosyl)-ATP:pyrophosphate phosphoribosyltransferase, EC 2.4.2.17] of Salmonella typhimurium has been determined. The amino acid sequence analysis was carried out with a combination of manual and automated methods. It was complemented by DNA sequence analysis (done in another laboratory) of the hisG gene, which codes for it. The subunit polypeptide chain contains 299 amino acid residues and has a molecular weight of 33,216. The amino-terminal segment of the protein is relatively basic in character and has limited sequence homologies with the lac repressor and histidinol dehydrogenase. In addition, the protein contains a 40-residue segment that has 13 residues identical with the sequence surrounding the active-site cysteine of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase.
