Risser staging is one of several criteria used in scoliosis screening programs. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of a radiologist’s Risser interpretations from a large metropolitan scoliosis-screening program when compared to interpretations of 2 pediatric orthopaedic surgeons and 2 orthopaedic residents.

Forty-five consecutive patients treated for displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus, Type III, by means of closed reduction and percutaneous crossed-pin fixation, were studied retrospectively. Thirty-three were available at an average of 33 months post-injury for clinical and radiographic follow-up of the affected and nonaffected extremities. Five additional patients returned radiographs for analysis. Baumann's angle and a lateral humeral capitellar angle were assessed and found to be useful clinical guides for assessing the adequacy of maintenance of fracture reduction. Based upon Flynn's criteria, 31 of 33 patients clinically assessed had a satisfactory result. Closed reduction with percutaneous pin fixation is believed to represent a safe, reliable, and efficient method of managing this difficult fracture.

Leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children. At the time of initial presentation, 10 of children have normal peripheral blood counts. Appendicular skeletal involvement occurs in —50 of cases. The literature does not clearly define the incidence of spinal involvement, with only a total of 31 cases located in a review of the literature. If case reports are excluded and series that reported the frequency of spinal involvement are summarized, only 16 of 615 cases had spinal involvement. In only one of 31 was it clear that the patient had a normal peripheral blood count at the time of diagnosis. This article adds to the literature two patients who had normal peripheral blood counts and spinal involvement with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Patients with leukemia may have significant symptoms and radiographic signs with normal peripheral cell blood counts at the time of initial presentation.

Carbon black-filled polymers are among the most challenging samples that an analyst may be called upon to identify. In this paper three novel methods of obtaining vibrational spectra from four different carbon black-filled polymers are evaluated: transmission infrared spectroscopy using a diamond anvil cell, Raman spectroscopy using 780-nm excitation, and inelastic neutron scattering. Overall, none of the three methods used in this work was totally satisfactory, but for most purposes infrared spectroscopy provides the best results in terms of spectrometer accessibility and the availability of suitable reference collections. Raman spectroscopy was successful only with one of the four polymers. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) was successful in obtaining a spectrum with all four materials, but this success occurred only with respect to the hydrogenic part of the polymer, and, for many materials, it is the heteroelements, O, S, and halogens, that determine the important physical properties of the compound. For both Raman spectroscopy and INS, a major disadvantage is the lack of a suitable data base for identification of the materials.

Twenty cases of surgical fusion for spondylolisthesis were reviewed at the Scottish Rite Hospital (Atlanta, GA, U.S.A.) to determine whether a procedure other than a simple posterolateral fusion is necessary for most patients. The patients were treated postoperatively with pantaloon spica cast immobilization. The fusion rate was high (90), and patient satisfaction was high. One patient developed neurologic loss postoperatively. Two patients' slips progressed>10 before solid fusion occurred. Thus, bilateral posterolateral fusion, followed by pantaloon spica cast immobilization, is effective for patients with symptomatic spondylolisthesis or asymptomatic children with grade 3 or greater slips. Reduction was not performed in this series

Four cases of congenital absence/aplasia of the lung associated with congenital vertebral anomalies are reported. Although alteration in arterial blood gas determinations and vital capacities occurred, the patients tolerated general anesthesia well.
