Abstract

The WEGENER concept was presented in an attempt to facilitate large scale multidisciplinary investigations covering a whole region embracing different nations with different political backgrounds. The successes achieved to date serve to underline the urgency of the problems being addressed to the nations involved, which are not in a position to finance extensive investigations applying state of the art technology alone. The processes under examination necessitate repeated observations over long time periods. As a result, it is extremely important to obtain first observations as early as possible, though this may incur added expense. The WEGENER-MEDLAS Project established the necessary framework for follow-up activities and set standards for international cooperation which can be emulated in other regions of the globe confronted with similar problems. Abstract

Precise orbits of the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites are fundamental constituents of GPS-based space geodesy. Accurate baseline estimates with a precision of one to a few parts in 108 are essential to the study of Earth's dynamics problems. As a by-product of trajectory estimation, high resolution Earth Rotation Parameters (ERPs) can also be determined. A new application of triple differencing for efficient evaluation of GPS orbits in a PC environment is presented here. Initial tests show that this approach is capable of providing orbits that are highly compatible with the results obtained by the International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS). This approach allows for completely automated data processing without the overhead of working with very large normal matrices or cycle-slip fixing.

Abstract

Kinematic survey phase data are reduced using a standard double difference formulation when the initial integer values of the biases are known or determined. Two experimental results are presented. A byproduct of the reduction was the generation of a measure of success similar to the Geometrical Dilution of Precision (GDOP) familiar to those using measurements of pseudo ranges. This new measure is called RDOP for Relative Dilution of Precision.

The concept of optimal filtering of observations collected with a dual frequency GPS P-code receiver is investigated in comparison to an approach for C/A-code units. The filter presented here uses only data gathered between one receiver and one satellite. The estimated state vector consists of a one-way pseudorange, ionospheric influence, and ambiguity biases. Neither orbit information nor station information is required. The independently estimated biases are used to form double differences where, in case of a P-code receiver, the wide lane integer ambiguities are usually recovered successfully except when elevation angles are very small. An elevation dependent uncertainty for pseudorange measurements was discovered for different receiver types. An exponential model for the pseudorange uncertainty was used with success in the filter gain computations.
